Problem with recovery - Vibrant General

Hi all, i just recently got a vibrant, and i rooted using superoneclick, and now after installing rom manager and flashing clockwork recovery, every time i boot into recovery it gives me default android recovery, and not clockwork mod. what is wrong?

bumpitty bump bump

Make sure you have the update.zip installed by Rom Manager in the root of your sd card and hit re-install packages. That should get you into clockwork recovery.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App

It is in the root of my internal sd card, and i do not have a reinstall packages option

try the modded 3e recovery in the DEV section if your on 2.2

Well i went to that except i have one problem and i cannot post there due to being under 10 posts, but they all talk about a "keys" file, but i cant see it in any of the files in the op

Can you give like a full step by step guide? because none of the ones in that thread are specific enough

nevermind i think i got it with this:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=925400

Yup, got it, now im gonna go flash bionix -v , thanks for the help!

bionix hard-bricked my phone and now i cant get into download mode even with no boot guide

What is it doing? With ODIN open and phone plugged in to your pc do you see it adding a COM port? Im gonna take a stab and say you didn't let Linda convert your filesystem completely and reboot itself maybe...

No com port no nothing, the phone itself will not power on into anything using any method

any idea what you did right before it wouldn't come on? Did you have a lagfix other then voodoo?? Like OCLF??
Try this method....
Pull everything out of your phone..battery, sim, sdcard
Open ODIN on your PC
Plug the USB into your PC
Hold down ONLY the Volume Keys (both of them)
Plug the USB into your phone...still holding the keys
With your other hand put the battery in..
Should be a minor delay and then you should see the Download mode screen (Digging Android robot)
Try it a few times

that is what i have been doing for past 15 minutes, its too late now, im returning it.

Man..I know its frustrating...I ve been there quite a few times myself..This last time I had a complete No Power brick...no nothing..dead...nada... Called em up, had a replacement sent, but before it got here, I got the phone back on and I actually returned the replacement back to them and kept my old one...it just keeps coming back to life...
So if you ordered a replacement..theres no harm in playing with your current one to try to get it back working is there??

I didnt order a replacement, i took it back to the store, and wow, this is ridiculous, the new one has the problem with the back and menu buttons where they choose when they want to work and not, i liked my desire z so much better except that i was forced into getting rid of it because people could never hear me on calls.

Ahhh I c... sorry I couldn't help you
Sent from Bionix V powered Vibrant

bad choice .....becasue u never know if your replacement phone was refurbished prolly it was . u shoulnd of stay with new vib and let us help u fix it . anyway ,good luck and LOOOOOLMZ if opeople couldnt hear u whenu called thanu should of never gotr a vibrant loo ull see why P

Don't Try to Partition with Rom Manager.

If You try to partition with Rom manager it partitions the internal sd and you will brick your phone. Your screen will be black with only the capacative buttons glowing. This brick is possibly the more annoying ones where you have to flash your phone twice. If you have this problem don't panic like i did.
*REMOVING EXTERNAL SD CARD MIGHT IMPROVE ODIN CHANCES OF WORKING*(Thanks Hoey2011 for mentioning this)
Step 1: Download all files from this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734475
PUt them in a safe spot you will need them for later.
Step 2: Download files from this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=740558
Step 3: HAVE ODIN OPENED FIRST!!(This helped it detect my phone for some reason)Get phone into download mode. The easiest way to do this is pull out battery from phone. Then plug phone into usb connected to computer it will have the battery sign. Hold volume keys and power button when the screen goes black let go of power button. You will be in download mode if Odin doesn't detect it unplug usb and replug it.
Step 4: Once Odin has recognized your phone set the pit file and .tar file FROM EUGENE'S 2.2 THREAD. NOT THE FIRST LINK THE SECOND LINK. Then click start. And follow all the directions on his thread.
Step 5: Once you have flashed that rom you put your phone in download mode again and set up the pit and .tar file for Stock 2.1. After you finish flashing it your phone should be saved!
Thanks to Eugene373, justanothercrowd and anomalous3(for being patient and helping me out when I had this problem) And to anyone else that helped me solve this problem.
Thanx for being the guinea pig. Glad you got it back working.
Yea It was a ***** tho. Spent at least 4 hrs fixing it. But glad its working
Wow that sucks well thanks for the write up.
I was in the same boat as you and as I was downloading 2.2 to try I found your thread. Works like a charm! Thanks for the info on this. I guess I shouldn't read threads backwards from now on, huh?
ok so I've been following this method, and got eugene's 2.2 loaded up correctly, and rebooted back into download mode. The 2.2 files loaded just fine through odin, but now that I'm flashing 2.1, it seems hung on the cache.rfs.
I am gonna go smoke a blunt or two and come back and see how it's progressed, but this hang is the same issue I had before, on my windows 7 64bit machine. I figured it was a compatibility problem so I'm using my old busted vista machine. I've gotten further on the vista laptop than the W7 one, but I'm still hung.
How long should the 2nd loadup take??
I am almost at my wits end with this stupid mistake I made and hope is such a far stretch
ok, so i continued my use of the search tool here at xda and found my answer
I had my MicroSD card in my phone, hadn't even thought to remove it. I have moved past the cache.rfs file and am now waiting to see the results....
IT WORKED OMG OMG OMG
Xda forums almost ruined my phone, then brought it back from the dead
god i love equlibrium
Good info thanks for posting it, but one thing I would like to point out and I am not alone in feeling this way people are throwing the.word brick around and far to casually. You did not brick your phone by partitioning it the proof is that you fixed your phone. Bricking a phone is wheb youbrender the phone usless as a brick when it is totally broken and unfixable. I dont mean to nitpick i just hate seeing everyone that makes a mistake in anything crying wolf and claiming to have bricked. But my rant aside thanks for the very usefull info you mightvwanna pass it on to koush so he can fix it.

I did exactly this and I was so frustrated that I sent my phone back to tmobile and just purchased a new one. I don't know about yall but if there are two storage points (internal and external) there should be an option for both in default recovery because when I tried to partition the external sd card *in which i was able to execute on my nexus one* it was very easy but because I use clockwork recovery and did a rom backup, i guess the backup zip wasn't safe because I received the same results as you. There should be 2 options to choose from that says *internal storage, External SD Card* why make things difficult? lol
The manufacturers need to be a little more intuitive.
*this is my opinion*

Ah crap, that's right, /sdcard is mapped to the *internal* sd card on the phone, and that's what is partitioned. I'll disable partitioning on the phone (external SD card is not accessible in recovery).

I haven't tried partitioning, but the card's /dev/block/mmcblk1p* entries are there and I can mount them. That's how the dc2ext hack works. It mounts /sd-ext and /data to do the copies and it does it in recovery.

I have had serious issues with Odin hanging on my WIn 7 32bit system. However, I think I was actually doing it wrong. I was booting my phone to download mode then plugging it in to my computer. However, I have had continued success (tried a bunch last night) by doing this:
Open Odin, take out the battery, plug in USB cord to phone and computer, hold vol up+down, put in battery. Whenever I booted into Download Mode this way, Odin worked perfect every time. Turns out after cursing my computer it was user error, whoops .

turns out, the system wasn't the finicky piece of equipment, it was the phone and the odin software. I inadvertently left the sd card in the phone, the external one, and that was causing my hangs. Two more tries after pulling the sd card, I had success and was back to my phone again

YEa I guessed as much thats why I was trying not to "flame" and to be informative you are a victim of exactly what I am talking about. Because so many people throw around the word brick anytime anything goes wrong not only is it losing its meaning but people are also getting confused.
This does work, it took me about 7 hours last night to fix it.
I will say if it does not work then keep trying.
My flash kept freezing on the froyo rom and would not finish, so I actually had to try and flash the full captivate stock rom (search the captivate forum) it froze but afterwords it let me go throught the whole flash process with Eugenes 2.2 rom, then flashed right back to 2.1 no prob.
I will also say that if you are on a x64 system then go find a x86 (32 bit) system. I dont know why but it just works better.
So if it doesnt work then do this:
1. Make sure you are on a 32 bit system.
2. Flash a Full Rom from the Captivate forum. (It has a more to it I believe, changes the system maybe?)
3. If it freezes that is ok. Flash the 2.2 rom. (might need to do it a couple times)
4. After successful flash then go to stock.
This needs a sticky!!!!!!!!!
I just did this. Wish I would have seen this thread first!
I'm having a really hard time getting to download mode. Read all the threads I could find on it.
Any ideas? Download mode isn't removed when partitioning with rom manager is it?
I'm trying not to freak out...

After fighting with it I found out this worked best for me:
Battery out
Plug in USB cord to the phone and PC
Hold Vol up and down
Put the battery in
Phone should boot right into download mode.
Also, I found you should have Odin open FIRST before you do this. If I didn't I would have constant issues with Odin hanging.

sweet...well, not sweet...PM me if you find a fix: i'll do the same, i have a replacement on the way via t-mobile.
for the record, i've successfully gotten in to download mode and used Odin to get back to factory...twice, once for fun and once for resurrection...i don't know what went wrong, except while nandroiding maybe i backed up a bogus recovery rom before i flashed. i can't get past Vibrant, and i don't even see the battery recharge display either when i usb, i'm letting the battery run down to try and get to the green battery icon to try a "download" mode??? i've read of a move while you see the charging screen but i haven't been able to get there... oh well, live and learn. i am also searching for a way to boot from the removable sd card that has a system or recovery rom on it..nothing yet.
also, i've read people discussing newer models being blocked from download...well like i said i've done this with this phone before but i got a new SIM last week and this is the first attempt with the new SIM???? maybe a coincidence...
take battery out, plug in usb to pc, hold vol up n down, replace battery, boom download mode.

yes(but i'm over saturated right now, i might have missed something) ...i'm dead in the water, i can't get to the point of anything seeing my device...my computer won't see it except as unknown usb device, no partitions show up, adb doesn't recognize it in any way...maybe i'm a [email protected], but i don't see anyway to flash it without at least getting in to download mode, or somehow pushing a .zip at the sd for a recovery??? technically figuring out that stuff is beyond my remaining brain cells...this seems like a dicey way for the phone to rely on when restoring to factory.... it would be nice to have the device look at All available partitions, internal/removable, for a recovery system or have an altogether different sd in the phone for a -R dedicated recovery volume....don't know, i'm a noob at this android stuff sooo....

[Q] Hard brick ?

Im at a loss i tried to do the voodoo lag fix and it did not work right so i tried to clockwork recovery and restore my nandroid back up and it gets stuck at lost&found or at halgps_config. So i have tried to odin back to stock and ive used the original files and the ji6 files aqnd all i can get to is the stick together and then galaxy s screen after that it will go blank and only the backlight on the bottom keys lights up. Odin always shows pass and works correctly am i missing something or is it really fubar thankd for any help..
Ok so you can get it to download mode correct? If so get the rom from eugene froyo that doesnt brick and the true stock rom run the froyo rom thru odin first then your gonna get an error message that ok pull the battery and put it back in download mode get ready to flash the true stock rom but on odin you have to click repartion on the top left then click start all good aftet that let me know how it works k

That's not really necessary. I've had to do this twice in the last 24 hours and I left my SIM and MicroSD in and everything worked fine.
I did this same thing, but I can't get into download mode. Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated!
are you doing it the way like take your batt out, put your batt in, hold both volume buttons and plugging in usb cable? that takes you right to DL mode, but odin doesnt always recognize it so you might have to unplug and plug it back in.
I don't know where my head is at. I just wasn't using the correct steps to get into download mode. Its working fine now. Thanks for your help!
thanks for the info i will try eugenes 2.2 now and let you know
did the eugene froyo and then to stock and i dont know how but it worked like a charm only thing different is i got an error when i had repartition checked for stock rom but i unchecked it and bingo just like new thanks for the help these forums rock!!!!

I have had your same problem my friend just hold 1 while pressing power on and get in download mode then just do odin again
This nice yellow arrow has happened to me bunches of times so don't worry!
When you get the dash yellow icon situation, the only way to recover is to flash back to factory with Odin3.
In case you haven't gotten it yet, here's the download link for the di18 stock tar:
http://www.multiupload.com/X9AB1U56JV
You can get back into download mode by doing the following:
* Close the Odin program
* Pull the USB cable and battery out of the phone
* While pressing both the 1 key and power button with one hand, replace the battery with the other. Download mode should immediately appear.
* Open Odin first, then reconnect the USB cable
* Load the di18 stock tar into PDA, reboot should be the only thing ckecked. Press start.
I wrote the all in one script, and would like to know what happened when you installed the clockwork mod. Tell me what OS you were using and what messages came up. The script should have detected if the install wasn't successful.

Being the resilient person that I am, (as well as the impatient one). I found a stock Tar for DG26 and Flashed it to my phone using odin... it fixed it. Then i manually updated it... Had i waited for a response i would have known there was a .tar file with the DI18 update floating about... Thanks for the help though. This is a good forum with a good community.

At least quite a few people came to your aid... glad you've gotten it sorted. Feel free to post again in the all in one if you still want to install clockwork mod, I do my best to help as long as I'm online. You know what to do now in case something doesn't work out... It's happened to us all.
Interesting enough, I don't think I actually bricked the phone when I first installed Clockwork. Seeing as this is my first smartphone and my first foray into the Android universe, I am a bit of a noob when it comes to how things are done. Not realizing that clockwork Mod used a different button to engage items than the normal Samsung recovery platform, I had thought I had some how overridden the start up files to eclair with the All in one program.. After re-upgrading the phone back to DI18, I rooted then installed clock work again using the "AIO" program. (great program BTW). I encountered a similar error to what I had before, When I was in clockwork I was unable to leave by using the home button or even removing the battery, but I hit the back button and then figured out that the camera button acted like the home button would in the native Samsung recovery client. I think this was the case from the start. Just keep this as a story of warning if you ever are in my position, ask people before you think you've completely "bricked" or screwed something up, because there may be a simple solution. Anyways thanks for the help, I'm still learning all of this, though I've been using linux platforms for years (no ubuntu or mint, more Red hat and Debian.) so you'd think id be ok at it....

[Q] Phone Boot problem, won't mound SD

Sorry about the post as this may not be the best place for it.
My phone got low on memory so was trying to clear stuff, it rebooted then on the loading screen (Myn RLS 5) perpetually restarted. So went into recovery
and tried to do a backup (so could format as my last backup was old) and it threw an error in mid -backup (did write it down, doh!!)
Now the phone does the 5 vibration thing and does boot. Also SD won't mount get " /dev/block/mmcblk0p1" error. Also I now notice the phone reset to "S-on" I had a long time ago rooted with unRevoked Forever.
I have read several posts about this , but confused on the best way (instructions) to get a img file on and reinstalled. I have used adb before but only basically , unfortunately my computer at work doesn't have adb installed so cannot test things now.
So if anyone has a good one or two methods for me to try tonight, would be much appreciated. Also totally surprised that security went to "on" so probably have to address that first.
Oh phone is EVO, HBOOT 0.93 , Radio 2.15.00.05.02 . If I should post this somewhere please feel free to direct me there.
EDIT: I have ClockworkMod Recovery 2.6.01 installed and can get into it.
Thanks so much.
Kevin
First I woud try the sd card fix found here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695243&highlight=sd+card+won't+mount Then I would downgrade your radio to 2.15.00.11.19 using a flashable pc36.img file. All radio versions can be found in the development section. If the first 2 steps are successful, run a 3.70 ruu(can also be found in development). If that is successful, reroot using unrevoked forever and you should be good to go.I' not sure if the radio downgrade will work with s-on,but I think if you use the flashable pc36.img version it will go thru,if it doesn't,you can still try the 3.70 ruu.I ran into some incompatability issues with trying to run the 2.15.00.5.02 radio with older software and hboot versions.
@BrianBusby2038,
Thanks for the post, good information I will give it a try. Interestingly the phone did eventually boot into Myn for a few minutes before the 5 vibrations of death started again.
So looked and it def. doesn't see the SD. So hopefully can recover.
I am wondering if the AData SD card I have is not reliable. Thankfully have the original 8GB card so hopefully can get things going again.
Anybody have a good recommendation for a 16GB microSD that is fast (buying from Newegg) ?
thanks again
No problem, hope it works out ok.

I had this same problem a few days ago and I had to get a replacement ordered (a 2.3 preloaded replacement ). Make sure that your USB is still working, because both my SD card and USB stopped working, S-ON went on, and the five vibrations/green light shut down problem happened. I was able to get S-Card operational, but USB was no go. I could not log in as super user and could not enter the commands necessary to fix usb. No USB = No root = no fix for USB. Now I'm stuck with a 2.3 evo, at least its shiny and new .
Hope you fix yours, I wonder how this problem has happened to so many of us randomly. PS: when you take it to sprint store, don't complicate matters and revert to stock.
Crude, fastboot on PC throwing driver error, how do I tell if the right driver is installed.
This is really sucking, Ive only ever installed one driver and could connect with adb.
So not sure what to do.
EDIT: says can't start because AdbWinApi.dll is missing
@robertsaurus,
not sure how I could go to stock if I cant re-image. Yeah definitely don't want to make a fuss, ugh
I lost clockwork mod and ended up only being able to access default Android recovery menu. I think an option on there will restore the factory Rom and make it look like it was never rooted. I know people have been able to fix theirs but I gave up after a days worth of trying

Well I had partial success. I restored a signed Sprint Rom, but phone keeps rebooting and USB doesn't work. the 5 vibrations seemed to have gone away. Though since I can get usb to work I can't do a RUU install and remove clockwork.
I did talk to Sprint and they are willing to early upgrade me and buy the EVO back for 125 so long as it boots and it does .
So going to give that a whirl , I have 30 days so may give a few other things on the evo a try before I return. Doing the upgrade I just lose out on some of the rooting so we'll see how that impacts me.
I had the exact issue. I think if you do a wipe from the boot menu (power and vol down) it will get rid of it all. And then take it to sprint and play dumb . Worked for me, new shiny evo lol

yeah I played dumb, but since it was out of warranty 1month and 10 days. they wouldn't replace . But at least get upgrade and buy back on the EVO which is not bad.
Though I am over the next couple of days try and get the EVO rescued, so long its still bootable I can take advantage of the buyback

Interestingly I could get the 5 vibrations thing to go away if I applied unrevoked forever s-on. the phone will still reboot and usb not functioning yet. Going to try and get a shell script running to fix usb , or try and do a re-rooting via the auto root, maybe hboot usb will work (fastboot did)
I did get the photon (we'll see how it works, though miss my rooting and evo)
so if like hopefully they will unlock the bootloader.
