A Few Questions
posted this in general section then realised it would probably be better off here, sorry for making this thread twice, wont happen again
thanks for the help, once again sorry for the 2 threads.
Those are great speeds, this may sound stupid but since it runs windows any chance of being about to run a torrent client on it? probably an idiotic question but i dont know much about windows mobiles, cant hurt to ask
Anybody else care to throw in 2 cents before i make a decision on purchasing it or not?
title says it all. I have been browsing for a few days, on this great forum, before posting to find an answer but to no avail.
1. How can I connect Active sync via bluetooth and/or wifi. Currently I am using a Dell latitude D610(please no jokes..work laptop) with integrated bluetooth. I have tried every conceivable option except for the one that works apparently. I've partnered the devices and when trying to connect from the laptop my phone keeps denying the request.
2. I want to also customize mine with a 'cooked' ROM(I believe that's the terminology) but what are the best one's out there???????...and once I flash it can I still install my apps from a spb backup file? I still want to put the 'Iphone' theme on it...I like the dialer...also the 'Slide2Lock'.
3. Will I also have to re-hack the registry for AD2P upgrade 'bitpool=48' deal all over again or can I use a back-up'd registry I made with PHM RegEdit?
4. How can I tell what SPL/IPL version I have?
BTW - I have Hermes 8525 w/
ROM version: 2.15.502.3(latest official HTC ROM)
Radio version: 1.40.30.00
I've seen people with higher radio versions.....what advantage does this give? And does this require a ROM upgrade or is it a seperate upgrade/program(.cab)?
Its not that I'm new to hacking...I've also hacked my 2 PSP's with custom firmware, game-boots, waves, & Icons here:
PSP1:
halo3 custom

PSP2:
gears of war custom:

oh and please no flaming on the vid's used my sh***y kodak camera.
Sorry for all the NBISH questions but also wanted to say HI & great/informative site!!
Any help to the questions above is greatly appreciated!!
First of all most of these questions have been answered elsewhere. Please search for the answers before starting new threads.
1. Right click activsync icon and select "connection settings." / Allow connections from bluetooth.
2. The choice of cooked rom depends on the person. It only takes a few mins to flash one so try them and decide on your own. Other people may like ones you dont. DOnt know about the SPB backup but I assume it might not go as planned.
3. There are apps around that will do the reg hack for you. Pimp My Black is one of them.
4. Hold down the Power (right side) and OK (left side) buttons and push the reset button on the bottom in with the stylus. You will get a screen that will display both.

There are no best ROM's out there. Yes, you can reinstall whatever you have on your PDA. This has been answered in previous threads. Please read before posting.

This has also been answered. The latest WM6 ROMS do not require these keys as they are dynamically adjusted.

Two tips... READ READ READ READ then SEARCH SEARCH SEARCH then READ READ READ READ...
Cheers mate.
Just a quick note. Don't rely on SPB Backup. When backed up on WM5 and migrated to WM6, you'll have a plethora of problems. My advice, backup manually.
if anyone can answer any of my Questions that would be very helpful.
i just got a refurb cingular 8525
how can i put java/macromedia on my phone so i can watch youtube videos and play java games?
how do i set text message ring tones?
how can i get AIM back on my phone?
how can i ge WM6 and what version do i get and where do i get it and how do i install it?
anyone know any cool free programs/software i can get for it?
Please don't start three different threads for the same question. I've removed the other two.
You need to show some effort here before you ask any questions. Please do some research and read through the forums before posting questions that have been answered hundreds of times (no exaggeration).
The nature of this forum is such that it is expected that users do their homework first. Then, if help is still needed, just ask. There are many knowledgeable and friendly people that would be happy to help.
First step, visit is the WIKI. Read through it and follow all the links.
Second, visit the WIKI again. Read though it and follow all the links.
Third, use the search feature at the top of the page and you'll find many more answers waiting for you. Another great idea is using Google to search the site. It can, often times, give more relevant answers.
At any rate, please take your time and do all the research you can.
Good luck!
1. There is a Macromedia Flash release (v. 6 or v. 7) for your phone. You will either need the HTC Streaming Media app or Opera Mobile in order to play YouTube videos. Do a search.
2. Text messages--Go to settings, and under the "personal" tab, click on "sounds and notification"--Go to "notifications" tab, and select SMS under event and assign your ringtone.
3. I am using the "Black Satin" version of WM6.
4. For all others, please do a search. I have IM+ installed which takes care of AIM among other chat services. It's a paid-for program. There's also Agile.

Hi all have had my HD2 for 3 months now and have all the usual issues and it has been back to Vodafone a few times I dont really want to get rid of it as it is perfect size etc for vids and calendar sms for and an old codger like me for work with bad eyesight..
Heres the question I am not brain of britain at this sort of thing and want to know if there is an Android .exe I can run from my micro sd card that has all the upgraded stuff you need for a stable phone........I can add apps and that sort of thing but my technical knowledge is somewhat vague....I dont understand what Froyo is and your terms for radio this that and the other and could be surfing on here for days and not understand much....
I understand the dual boot bit as in the Windows operating system ( or not as the case is )
and Android effectively runs over the top of it but thats as far as I can get...
Any help would be gratefully received..
Regards Lee F
ps has anyone else had their phone dial out evertime you play a track on Nitro?....I came back from France to find each time I changed a song it dialed hope for 10 seconds and had a huge bill of .75p connection charge some 90 odd times......
what ....when ...how...im confused
Android is in fact a whole other system compared to Windows Mobile, and as of now, it isn't completely finished/'out of beta' yet. It is still less stable than Windows Mobile is on your device.
What I do suggest you to do is take a look at this thread, and get started with HSPL'ing your phone, so you can install a custom ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=609477
The phone dialing out is one thing it shouldn't be doing for sure.
Actually sounds like a trojan horse.
Did you change the song with your wired headset? Because it can be used to dial the last dialed number that could be your problem. Also some earphones/speakers without a button can sometimes initiate it when you move the plug around....

Well, that's no way to treat a fellow! Y'ought to explain to 'im.
Android on the HD2 is not finished yet (and will always require things like flashing or other not noob safe things) and has therefore some bugs, problems and limitations. For someone who isn't that good with technical things and hasn't read/understood all those guides it could cause some problems and misunderstandings etc. I can imagine someone sending in his HD2 for repair because his ambient light sensor doesn't work in Android...
...or at least opening some threads here and asking tons of dumb questions that could be easily answered by reading the stickies or using the search.

There is no such .exe file. To Run Android you only need to run a .exe and a few files with it. But without a suitable Radio (the part of you operating system that is responsible for Wifi, Bluetooth, GPS and everything else that sends/receives data over the air), you will get problems. But finding and updating a suitable Radio sadly isn't as easy as running a .exe
But there are many guides on it which should help you, in case you still want to do it.
Buddy,
Right at the top of the forum here there are sticky threads that contain all the information you need to get HD2 running android. Please post you're questions there instead of opening a new thread.

A few things you should keep in mind before posting to XDA-Developers forums:
Check if your question has been asked before
Some questions just keep popping up over and over. Please use the 'search function' in the menu above each and every page in the forum. Try entering a few keywords to see if your question has been asked before. If it has, please read the topics and see if you can figure it our from there. You can also search inside a topic if it has too many comments by using the search function (CTRL+F) in your browser. If you don't find the answer, please post a comment to the relevant thread instead of starting a new one.RTFW, or Read the Wiki
Chances are your question is already answered on the wiki: Make sure you browse through the FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) before you start a new topic. If it's an obvious or common question, chances are someone has already put the answer there.ETFW, or Edit the Wiki
Information stored in the wiki is dynamic: The wiki makes it easy for anyone to contribute or edit pages, and link them together, it is the best way to keep all information current and accurate. If you ask something in the forum which you didn't find on the wiki previously, please take 5 minutes of your time to EDIT the wiki and add the information there when you get an answer. This is the only way to avoid tons of new threads asking the very same questions over and over and over again.
Don't be afraid of editing the wiki if you don't understand the wiki syntax: Formatting may seem a bit complicated at the beginning, but you don't have to care too much if you just want to add content, add it as if you were writing a text document and sure someone more experienced with wiki syntax will edit it after and correct the bad formatting mistakes.First time here?
If it's your first time here, we encourage you to read general FAQ's too, which is an extended version of what has already been said here.

As a rule of thumb, let’s try to maintain the following structure:
Desire Z General

Desire Z Android development
(Specific talk. Post issues related to upgrading only, Utilities, Radios, unbricking, etc.)
Desire Z Themes and Apps
(Specific talk. Post issues related to themes only, software, applications, etc.)
Desire Z Accessories
(Specific talk. Post issues related to accessories only, SD Cards, headsets, remote, etc.)
Hello guys i have a question. I think my desire z's battery doesnt go so long. When i look what is using the battery it says display 40%. Why it is using so much? I first thought it might be because of the live wallpaper but although i changed, its still about 40%. Second question, is charging the phone from the computer bad for the phone? Thanks a lot...

Regarding the battery, it's normal for the battery life to start off a bit poor, and improve over time, as the phone "learns" the capacity of the battery. Check out this threads :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=844051
Some people have found greatly increased battery life from using the SetCPU app, try searching on that.
It's pretty normal for the screen to be a big consumer of the battery, just like it is on a computer laptop. You can try turning the brightness down to make a difference to this.
As for charging from the computer, I don't know, but I can't see a reason why it should be a bad thing to do. Sometimes the computer will deliver a slower charge than a mains charger (no idea if this is the case on the DZ or not), and in that case a slower charge is often better for a battery.
I got a few questions about this phone because I'm probably gonna buy it next week.
1: Does the phone have swype?
2: Do rooting methods for the G2 work for the Desire Z ? (and what can i do more?)
3: What is S-OFF ? (and what is radio s-off?)
4: What is this trackpad? (i'm coming from a Nokia N900, so it's a big change)
5: How good are the speakers for music playback?
Thanks.
Calendar question
I've got a calendar issue that I posted here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=844857
Basically, my calendar fails to load. I did some looking around, and I think the problem is here:
11-22 16:39:25.495 E/ActivityThread( 2253): Failed to find provider info for com.android.calendar
11-22 16:39:29.025 E/ActivityThread( 1724): Failed to find provider info for com.android.calendar
I then went into the Backup/Restore section of Titanium backup, and found that 'com.android.providers.calendar' has a line through it, as if it's been uninstalled. I never uninstalled or deleted it, so either the Chinese guys who tweaked the ROM (still basically sense, but with some extra crapware) screwed it up somehow, or one of their crapwares that I uninstalled was linked to it somehow.
My question is, is there a way for me to recompile that file, or do I need to get someone to extract it for me? If I need to push the file, where should I push it to? /system/app, or a more specific location?
Thanks.

A stock G2 runs a slightly different ROM/kernel than a stock DZ. So make sure you follow the correct rooting method for the correct phone/ROM/kernel that you have.

I can confirm you can install (and use) Swype (in my case the Beta version) on the DZ. I am not sure if you need to have root access to do so, since I only tried it when I had it rooted already ;-)

Welcome
Rooting your phone is kind of like jailbreaking, because it gives you access to the administrator's account on the phone (the "root" user), so gives you the ability to do more things that you'd be otherwise locked out of.
Overclocking your phone is running the CPU at a higher speed than normal - so it makes it faster, quite simply.
What is the difference between hboot S-OFF and radio S-OFF?
What phones have radio S-OFF?
I again have a question which shows I am a beginner When I open wifi hotspot will i be charged in any way ? For example when I connect to internet with wifi ?
Sent from my HTC Desire Z
[Q]
I have some folders on the desktop, in which I added some app shortcuts. The last added shortcut is last in the list, it's not even ordered alphabetically. I want to change the order of the shortcuts without deleting the folder, re-creating and adding all shortcuts again. Is it possible?
Using standard folders from Sense.

That depends on your carrier. For example, with my carrier, Vodafone UK, any usage of the Internet (whether that's wi-fi from another computer connected via my phone, or direct from my phone) is going to count towards my monthly usage limit.
So it is using mobile network?

I come from a Windows Mobile background, so other more experienced Android users can correct me if I'm wrong...but rooting is pretty similar to jailbreaking the iPhone - it opens up the device beyond the lockdown of the manufacturer and the carrier, letting you basically have total control over what happens in your phone (eg: Superuser control).
UNLIKE jailbreaking the iPhone however, you can 'flash' other ROMs onto your device. Don't like HTC Sense? Flash a stock Android ROM. Don't like the performance? Flash a Cyanogen Mod (CM) ROM onto your device. Want HTC Sense? Flash a custom Sense-enabled ROM. This is possible due to the massive dev group and also the flexibility of the Android platform - iOS is designed by Apple to be used on only Apple devices, and is also designed to be locked down. Android is designed to be tinkered and customized.
Getting 'root' on your device allows you also to 'overclock' your phone - for example, the HTC Desire Z/G-2/Vision comes with it's CPU clocked in at 800MHz (or there abouts), by overclocking your device, you can tweak the CPU to run at 1Ghz, 1.4GHz or even up to 1.9GHz! So you can effectively more than double your CPU speed! This means that you can play games more smoothly, boot up faster, run apps more quickly, etc.
Be WARNED however, that incorrectly rooting and/or overclocking your phone may result in a 'bricked' device - this means that your device no longer switches on or cannot load any software/OS, resulting in your phone transforming into a very expensive paperweight or brick. If you follow the instructions correctly though, then there is no worries and you will have gained access to a whole new world.
Good luck!
A question of my own now - is it possible to 'exchange' the HTC Pre-cached maps? Or even flash one onto the phone? I live in Australia, but bought a euro device, meaning that I have a bunch of precached maps for countries that I will not be able to visit (for now because I am a poor student =P). Is this part of the ROM? And if so, can I somehow get the maps from the Australian Desire HD ROM (no Australian Desire Z as far as I know)?
