Calls are dropped when downloading apps - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

Okay despite completely wiping my flash NAND with Task29 and installing different ROM's, my device disconnects me whenever I attempt to make an outgoing call when I'm downloading apps from the market. People are sent straight to voicemail when trying to download from the market also.
I thought this was just a problem with a ROM I was using but I was wrong and it happens under every ROM I've flashed.
Has anybody else experienced this issue?

Do you see "E" or "G" instead of "3G" or "H" on the top?
Only "3G" or "HSPA" supports calls and data at the same time.
"2G" or "EDGE" does not support it. So yes, when data usage is heavy, calls can't reach.

2G indeed doesn't support calls and data at the same time, but calls always get priority, or at least they should. I don't even think your phone regulates this, I'd ring your provider and check if this is a known problem.

I very rarely see 2G or even G when I'm tethered or downloading anything.
In the past I never had a problem receiving or making calls while tethered or downloading from my device. Today when I tried calling my HD2 (from someone else phone) while tethered, the call didn't go through and I got an error message tell me "We're sorry, all circuits are busy now. Please try your call again later."
I'm paying unlimited data every month but every once in a while I exceed the 5GB threshold and I do recall receiving a message from T-Mobile about going over my limit. Can that have anything to do with the issues are that occurring?
Does anyone anything else they'd like to add? I really appreciate everyones help by the way.

Trinity data link and lost calls problems

Hi all
I am wondering about the purchase of a Trinity. Someone, on an italian forum, has posted the problem of incoming calls lost (the caller receives a busy line signal or the phone results unreachable) while the phone has a data connection active (apparently only an HSDPA one). Has any one observed a similar problem ?
Thank you everyone.

This is standard behaviour when transferring data over 2G GPRS. It should not happen on 3G. I have received phone calls while using 3G data and the phone rang as normal.... I can't report about HSDPA (is there a simple way to check if HSDPA is actually used?)

No, it's not, voice calls always have higher priority even in 2G networks.
Can someone else confirm this issue with Trinity?

Well.... it's the third time in a few days in this forum that I post something and I am told that I am wrong. The previous two times in the end I happened to be right, so according to statistics I should indeed be wrong this time!
However I think I might be right this time too! The standard behaviour with GPRS sessions is that they are interrupted when they are idle and an incoming call is received; if data is being transferred then the phone will be busy.
Obviously for outgoing calls the phone will stop the data session when you want to make a call.
(All this for GPRS on GSM)
PS: You don't believe me try to use a GSM phone as GPRS modem for a PC, start a large file transfer and try to receive a call.

Well, since I use GPRS internet for more than 3 years actively and have changed a couple of phones already I must say that GPRS system is projected in a way that voice calls are priority in any situation. In this years I have found that sometimes my phone is not reachable when I'm connected to a GPRS but that percentage is rather small, could be some other problems related to a base stations.
In your case I would think of contacting your operator, change phone or just change a carrier, being unreachable during GPRS sessions is something that I will characterized as bug, at least. NHF

You are right. It was a very common bug in the early Class B GPRS phones and I thought it was supposed to be like that, but indeed even a class B device should suspend the data session and ring when a call is received.
However I am reading in other forums that this is now happening again with HSDPA.... the joy of early adoption

I had some strange behavior like a busy signal when I had my phone set to 3G only, but I think it was because of marginal reception. I changed the frequencies to automatic and haven't had any problems since.

Hello hawk971,
I have the exact same experience while being persistently connected on the Swedish HSDPA network (Hi3G) I cannot receive or even make calls, most of the time. It's like i can sometimes manage to "slip through" with a call, and even an incoming call can get through if i'm lucky. I have figured out that if i end the data connection and make the call, i can re-login with the connection and keep babbling on the phone.
The problem started to appear right after we moved to a different area where HSDPA is deployed, at first the problem was very sproadic, but now the network is growing, so does the blocked calls.
Luckily i get an sms from the 3 network saying that someone has tried to call without leaving a message, otherwise i'd be clueless.
I have considered contacting 3 operator to discuss this, but i reckon i might loose the HSDPA access then because i have only 3G subscription but somehow my phone (which is purchased without operator lock and not from 3) snaps right onto the HSDPA access nevertheless. I have a consistent 1Mbits/s DOWNLINK and 350kbits/s UPLINK connection while running TPTEST on the laptop and using the P3600 with internet sharing and USB-cable.
I so would like to be able to stay on the HSDPA but right now i am considering to drop the high-speed since the phone part is basically rendered useless. I am also using GpsGate in the car, so my internet is always on, transmitting position, i guess that makes the problem worse. I might have to drop that...
I had a friend told me he had the same problem with TyTn and Hi3G here in Gothenburg. That makes me think that there's no particular problem with my phone. Rather it's a network problem that they yet have to solve.
Anyway, that's a long post!
P.S. Does anyone know how i can disable/enable HSDPA on the P3600 easily?
Cheerio
just remove link to "enableHSDPA.exe" in \windows\startup folder and soft reset you phone.
I can't find this file (enableHSDPA.exe) anywhere in my P3600....
Bump!
SecureGSM can you please elaborate a bit on this .exe file. I have a standard HTC P3600 and I don't see this file anywhere in the file system.
i'd like to know how i enable HSDPA on my HTC P3600. has anyone had success doing so?

I recently installed the fit4can or HTweakC as it is now called from here
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_Registry. It allows you to turn off HSDPA and do other tweaks to your Trinity. No harm is done since you can turn the HSDPA back on again anytime. Since I upgraded to the new 1.38 Radio, I was picking up HSDPA all the time at home, and every time my phone was auto checking email I'd miss calls. This HSDPA "feature" needs a little work.

receiving calls while online (edge) with wing?

Hi,
I have a t-mob wing (after I drove over my magician and I have the following problem: When I am having an active data connection I cannot receive any voice calls. The calls are going directly to voice mail, without notifying me. Once I stop the data connection I can receive calls again and than I will see that I missed a call.
I talked to t-mob support, and after doing a hard-reset (of course) they told me that this is a known problem with the wing, that they are trying to fix it and that there is nothing they can do right now.
1. do other wing users in the US experience the same, so is it the default behavior, or am I just unlucky? (it worked great without a problem with my magician btw)
2. as sometimes during the day the internet connection automatically gets connected (activesync I guess) I never really now if I am able to receive calls right now. Is there a workaround to manually start up and stop the internet connection without the device automatically connecting whenever it feels like it?
thanks in advance
wolferl
interesting ...
I have had a lot of complaints from people telling me that when they call me, it goes straight to voicemail.
I'm also a US Wing user, and I can confirm that is happening to me as well. Was checking sports scores on my break at work earlier, and my girlfriend called me, and I got a voice message from her...but it never showed that she called.
I also have the issue with people in my fave 5 not showing in the call history anyway, so I guess I lose both ways.
hm,
ok, seems to be a generic problem. Is here anyone who successfully gets voice calls while on a data connection with a wing/herald/p4350?
would be interesting to see if it is a t-mobile or device problem.
thanks
I got a HTC wing and i still get incoming call while browsing the internet. No problem here. i've tested a couple times and they all went through. I have T mobile

hi hondaman,
thanks for the info. whats your provider?

"active" data connection is the key
I have the same problem, no voice calls with an active data connection. For me, it seems to be only when the data is actively transferring, like streaming audio or a largish download. Straightforward web surfing doesn't seem to cause the problem, I've received multiple calls while surfing. But during streaming audio, calls go to voice mail every time.
I swear to you, I get calls when I am using data all the time on my Wing. I have the stock T-Mo rom and everything. No CID unlocking, no SIM unlocking.
It happens to me alot that people complain they have called me and it goes straight to voicemail... and its been in cases where im not even using my phone, and as far as I know, I have good signal.
I was running this GB soft program that kept my data connections always on... so I stopped using that to see if I notice a difference.
On the T-Mobile MDA it worked just fine, but on my Wing I can't receive calls while online either.
I just did some testing and I need to correct my original statement. Looks like kerrkj and the others were right. Just being online does not stop you from receiving calls. Just when you are transferring data, the line being actively used, you are not reachable. So, when you are web browsing, it depends whether the moment the call comes in, data is transmitted or not. I was testing accessing different web pages and a couple of times it worked and a couple of times it did not. When streaming audio the calls went to VM 100% of the time.
So, when I am using tomtom and having the traffic check activated, it will be pure coincidence whether you receive a call or not. When streaming audio it will be guaranteed that you are not receiving calls.
I am pretty sure that it was not like that with my magician. Hopefully t-mobile sorts it out sooner than later.
thanks for all your feedback
wolferl
it happens to me too, i know on sprint with the treo's you can run internet or phone, all calls will go to voicemail if you are on the internet. i just assumed it was that way with all of them.

not receiving calls in force EVDO or 1x mode

hey there just wanted to share my experience for those who might have the same problem. I tried using force EVDO mode (default is hybrid) and could no longer receive calls or text until i called someone. (calling out worked). I also read that someone had the same problem in force 1x mode. Just a heads up since it took me a while to figure out what was wrong. Not sure if others have had this problem and couldnt find it in any searches.
I had the same issue withing the first 30 days of release and actually returned two non Google branded phones. Tech support was unable to figure out why i was not receiving calls and advised me to return them. They tried rebuilding my account, re-provisioning ect. I only figured out what was going on after i was unable to get a call on the third phone immediately after changing the setting to evdo only. that was november 2nd and i have not had any issues since.
still happens on google branded phones. I too did the whole reprovisioning, factory reset, nandroid restores, and finally got a new phone. Tech support does not know about this problem.
i searched this a while back, when i got a "web page unavailable error" in the browser when i was trying to browse the internet during a call.
basically what i found out (google searching) is that our phones send calls and texts over the 1x data network. and the phone is unable to connect to both evdo and 1x at the same time.
that's why every time you send a text it drops down to 1x for a second and when you are in a call you cant use the internet.
some phones can do it but the sprint hero cannot.
i'll try to find the link to the article i was reading, but you can find it by searching google.
EDIT:
http://androidforums.com/sprint/10700-call-surfing-same-time-possible-not.html
here is just one post from another forum.
that's why you have to leave that setting on hybrid, because in order to send calls/texts the phone has to switch networks.
hope this helps
Just to clear something up
Google branded or not its the same damn phone. absolutly nothing different between the two besides the branding
And yes, CDMA cannot connect to data while on a call but I thought text could be sent through EVDO. Ive d/l files quite a bit and when I recieve a text it countinues to download with what no interference.
I see that as a Sprint issue, or if the phone is defective in some way. If anyone is experiance this issue, try to load a custom rom or if you are on one flash the RUU and if that doesnt help contact Sprint.

there are differences, i have a htc branded phone and it came with 1.29 firmware. the google branded phones now have the 1.56 firmware, as they do not make the htc branded phones anymore. there are probably more differences also...

the question is not if you can send texts and download files at the same time, its if you can receive calls/texts while locked out of the 1x network.

its not really a issue, unless they advertised that you could call be on a call and surf the web (which they do not) or if they advised you to change the setting in question from hybrid to EVDO. (which they do not)
CDMA 3G doesn't currently support receiving text or calls in EVDO.
EVDO is used for data only.
Every time you call or send/recieve a text, it switches to 1X, no matter what.
Hence, why you are able to recieve them when calling voicemail.
GSM phones have this capability, and while technically CDMA can, no CDMA carrier has the ability active(it's a network issue).
Forcing EV is good if you want uninterrupted data, but to recieve any calls or texts you will need to either dial out, or switch to a hybrid/1x mode.
Fact.
just got off the chat with sprint, they said, (after a long pause)
12/29/2009 11:53:58PM ME: "just wondering"
12/29/2009 11:57:09PM Agent (Myquan): "I do apologize but the option to place a call and browse the web at the same time, this is not one of the options provided on the sprint network, I do apologize for this inconvenience."
12/29/2009 11:57:43PM Agent (Myquan): "This option may possibly be available in the near future."
12/29/2009 11:58:13PM ME: "will my hero support this?"
12/29/2009 11:59:32PM Agent (Myquan): "Absolutely! if we receive a software upgrade for htc phones allowing this feature this will be available for your Hero."
12/29/2009 11:59:50PM ME: "sweet"
4G supports it.
Hero isn't a 4G phone.
So unless they decide to expand their 3G to allow it to do this, that's a no.

Strange Problem Regarding 3G

I've had a few users of my ROM mention that they can't use the phone and still have 3G active at the same time. As soon as you make a call, the 3G connection stops.
I've tested this myself...the 3G icon still shows, but no data can transfer until the call is ended...a good way to test is to do a speed test or download while making a call.
They say the stock Telstra ROM does let you do both, so obviously I have missed something somewhere...
Does anyone know what it could be?
Appreciate any help on this one...
oh! maybe im wrong but if you are using 3G data call you must to wait for it to end, then make a voice call
According to the user, you canuse 3G data connection to download and still make a voice call at the same time on the official ROMs. On my ROM it doesn't work.
neither in my rom you know...
In the canvas mui.. are a dialog square saying... please wait til the data call ends to make a new voice call.
Maybe im wrong.
Yea, they don't want to make a data call and voice call...they just want to keep using 3g data connection while making a voice call...they dont want to make a data call.
try using telstra dialer and dependent pkgs see if it works then.

Phone taking forever to send txts

Is anyone else having issues with their phone sending txt messages. Mainly on AT&T. I send a txt and sometimes (probably about 40% of the time) it takes 30sec-3min to send a txt.
I thought it was my rom (PN6) since I dirty flashed from the first PN6 to the last. So I just recently clean flashed PN7 to see if that solved the problem but im still having the issue.
Anyone else having this issue? And/or do you recommend anything?
Anyone?
Ive tried clearing the app data.
Ive tried clearing the device cache via the storage setting in settings
Ive tried clearing the cache in TWRP
Ive tried toggling the permissions for messenger
Ive tried Hangouts to see if it was app specific.
I got a new SIM card from AT&T
The only thing i havent tried is putting my SIM card in a different phone (because i dont have a spare phone) to see if its phone related or server related.
I'd advise to flash to stock factory images and see if it still happens. If not, it's an issue with Pure Nexus and you can try to get support in the official thread. If it still happens, I'd probably talk to AT&T tech support. They might be working on some towers or something. I don't personally have the issue on Project Fi, but I also don't use Pure Nexus.
Texts are normally sent over 1x I believe. I remember reading that AT&T is shutting down their 2g network by the end of the year. They might have shut it down already in your area. Maybe the texts are timing out and then being routed over 3g/4g?
Type *#*#4636#*#* into the dialer>phone information>turn on sms over ims>reboot. Worth a try

I went into that menu but i didnt see a "turn on SMS over IMS"
That menu looks way different then when it did with 6.0.1 when we used to have to toggle LTE and GSM to get LTE to connect.
Update
I noticed that if i send a txt and its stuck on "sending" if i go tin to the *#*#4636*#*# menu and toggle "Cellular Radio Power" off then on the "stuck" txt send right away.
