Jesus, how many times is this going to be brought up? The function is NOT there, and it was known BEFORE any device came out. Quit the *****ing and get a phone that supports it, or move on.
Anyways, I'd like a good sports app like Sportacular that has notifications when games start, during and after with the scores. Fantasy updates with custom rosters would be great too.
Not sure what the SDK will let you do, but is it possible to develop an app that can be pinned to the start page, that toggles 3g/wifi/bluetooth? I know we can just drop in to the Settings menu, but I would pay for an app that put those three in one easy place.
I would also like an app that rotates, like a slideshow I guess, all sorts of images from the various Xbox games I've been playing across the tile. That would look cool on the start page. Maybe it does a Bing image search to find the images to rotate, etc. I'm not a developer, but it was something I thought of earlier today.

this is comming in dec development almost done..
The direct sync with outlook is not possible with the WP7 SDK. That would have to be incorporated into the Zune sync software. The WP7 is meant to be a cloud device so I don't see this coming anytime soon.
The idea about toggling the radios is also not possible im afraid. The SDK does not give developers any direct access to the hardware like that. Hell, we can't even adjust the volume.

That really blows. Just thinking about what various iPhone and Android apps can do easily, it seems this platform is much more closed than even iPhone's. The key to both Android and iPhones success has been as much the developer community as it has been the solid hardware the apps run on, maybe even more so the developers. The new WP7 hardware seems solid enough so far. If MS doesn't open up the SDK to a greater array of components, this will just continue to lag behind, even fall farther behind.
...Hoping someone can cook up some nice WP7 ROM's

There's already one in the Marketplace for free. You have to have the YouTube app installed to use it, but it allows for searching, etc. from within the App.

This is supposedly coming in January according to reports this morning. See: http://www.wpcentral.com/rumor-january-firmware-update-wp7-include-custom-ringer-support-more
(Sorry, forgot to multi-quote.)
not sure if you can make do this or not, but I would like to be able to connect to hidden networks. Also be able to use the device as a wifi router.
Could it be made downward compatible? It would be nice to be able to run some of my already-purchased software.
As an alternative, the single-largest bummer of making this switch for me will be loss of the two coolest apps I have EVER had – “Pocket Earth”, and “Pocket World” by Bluepoint Studios. These apps, especially Pocket Earth, were stunning! I don’t know their status, but if you could buy the rights and the code and somehow rewrite them for WP7, I suspect you would do very well.
I need programs which are NOT web-dependent. Dictionaries, translation programs, an atlas, etc. which are device-based. Traveling internationally is where one needs the language converters and I work a lot on the plane. I’d prefer to give up space in the device than to continually pay for international data.
Best of luck,
Dave

A recorder...
There are a few out there, but I need it to either have voice activated start/stop, or stop/start control from my bluetooth. I am a sports photographer, and if I can describe what is on a picture that I take right after I take it, it is much easier to do my captioning when I get home. But I don't have time to take the phone out of my pocket and start/stop after each play.
It seems a lot of the suggestions are things to do with hardware. The only hardware access the SDK gives developers is the GPS, Accelerometer, and the radio. We don't even have direct access to the camera. (When an app takes a picture, it opens the camera app then sends the taken picture back to the app).

Will we ever be able to watch high quality youtube vids over 3g. Now you have to be on wifi. I know on iphone the vids are HQ over 3g.
1) Something that bypasses Exchange-enforced password entry. Android has it; and frankly, PIN enforcement is a meaningless layer of security that does nothing more than inconvenience the end-user.
2) Something that let's you copy synced Calendar entries and Contacts to the Phone instead of forcing them to exist in the stupid cloud. <--I would pay good money for this. Again, something that Android let's you do that I like.
Edited to Add:
3) An app that keeps the phone on and unlocked. I don't like this forced lock/timeout thing, I'd prefer to have complete control of when it is locked and when it isn't.
1) A Remote Desktop Application compatable with MS's current RDP services
2) Something that periodically rotates the Logon Screen Picture
3) Something that would quickly display Battery Life, Used/Remaining Storage, etc...

So I'm new into the whole smartphone business.
One thing I've noticed is that you need to get lots of apps if you want any kind of good functionality of your mobile. I mean, I can't even record sound without an app, or record a phone conversation (even tho my 8 year old flip phone that that functionality innate)
In the Apps - All, there is even a innate app called "Sound Recorder" yet you cannot use it, and you have to download an app to record sound.
Anyway, now it comes to my concern. Almost all apps require some pretty ridiculous permissions such as:
read phone status, test access to protected storage or modify or delete contents of USB storage. And I'm talking about apps such as a game let's say.
I downloaded an app that shuts off music (I like to fall asleep to music) called Music Timer. It's permission is to "dirrectly call phone numbers"! Really? make phone calls? It even has approximate location.
Is it just something I must live with, sell every and any information I put on my phone to use most of the apps out there?
I even setup a corporate email (my school). Their app requires to: erase data, set password rules, etc. Erase data? ugh.
Maybe I'm missing something, since I'm all new to this smartphone business and never dealt with it.

1) its a nexus device so its bloat free. Not everyone wants to record things so why force it onto everyone ? If you need said function you have the choice of adding said function
2) the sound recorder apk is used when you want to record an audio to an MMS.
3) not all apps require absurd permissions though I would agree that many do go to far in asking for permissions, BUT you always have the choice of not installing them.
Though some of the app permission names are written not as clear so it appears to be overreaching. Let's take a game. It asks to modify and delete USB storage. Normal as when you save a game its needs to be able to write to the phone. The other two you mentioned on not to educated on so I won't comment on yet
4) I looked into the music timer app you mentioned and I do agree that call phone number permission should not be their but again if you don't like it don't install it and try something else
5) your school email I don't see what the deal is? Permission to delete data, what do you think happens when you delete an email? It needs permission to delete it. Password rules is their to enforce your emails/schools password rules when using exchange
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
The email permissions can be due to it being a corporate mail server, so in order to prevent confidential information from being stolen, the admin can do things like remotely wipe the phone or disable the camera.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
So basically if I don't like 1 permission out of several for a specific app, then my only option is to not use the app at all and find an alternative, or if there is no alternative, live without it?

Yeah, the permissions suck. Luckily the Android ecosystem has developed where there's enough competition that you can usually find what you want from a dev who doesn't want to hijack your phone. There are a lot of small guys out there, but they make some of the best apps. Low on permissions, holo-themed, great support. I usually find good devs on XDA with cool projects and donate as soon as I check out and like there app (GYT is the most recent example).
HOWEVER, if you are on an deodexed ROM (so, not stock), this works great: PDroid. Free, clean, doesn't crash apps (like Permissions Denied).
For the community's information, I feel I need to create this thread to warn others:
Global IT security leader, ESET today announced that its engineers have spotted the first instance of a file-encrypting ransomware for Android. Once it has successfully infected a devices, this Android trojan scans the SD card for certain file types, encrypts them, and demands a ransom in order to decrypt the files.
After launch, the trojan displays a ransom message and encrypt files in a separate thread in the background. The ransom message is written in Russian and the payment is demanded in Ukrainian hryvnias. The message roughly translates to:
WARNING your phone is locked!
The device is locked for viewing and distribution child pornography, zoophilia and other perversions.
To unlock you need to pay 260 UAH.
1. Locate the nearest payment kiosk.
2. Select MoneXy
3. Enter {REDACTED}.
4. Make deposit of 260 Hryvnia, and then press pay.
Do not forget to take a receipt!
After payment your device will be unlocked within 24 hours.
In case of no PAYMENT YOU WILL LOSE ALL DATA ON your device!"
The malware directs the victim to pay using the MoneXy service as it is not as easily traceable as using a regular credit card.
Android/Simplocker.A will scan the SD card for files with any of the following image, document or video extensions: jpeg, jpg, png, bmp, gif, pdf, doc, docx, txt, avi, mkv, 3gp, mp4 and encrypt them using AES. It will also contact its Command & Control server and send identifiable information from the device like its IMEI.
The sample analyzed by ESET is in the form of an application called ‘Sex xionix’. It was not found on the official Google Play store and the company estimates that its prevalence is low at this time but believes that this is most likely a proof-of-concept or a work in progress.
In light of such advanced malware, Pradeesh VS, General Manager at ESET Midlde East provided the following advice to Android Users, “We encourage users to protect themselves against these threats by prevention- by using mobile security solutions such as ESET Mobile Security for Android- and adhering to best security practices, such as keeping away from untrustworthy apps and app sources. If they are unfortunate to already be infected, they should recover the files from a backup. Because when you have a backup, then any Filecoder trojan- be it on Android, Windows, or any operating system- is nothing more than just a nuisance.”

Something similar has been effecting iPhones for a couple of weeks. Just be careful what apks you install.
Shouldn't the Verify Apps option in Android protect you from these things? That's basically the point of that option.
Perhaps good news.

Doesnt Verify Apps just check apps on the Play Market? If so this would not work as article states its not found in the Market..
Also, ESET is reporting this and also suggesting users use there virus software lol.. Shamless plug to get the work of their own software out there, self promoting, maybe they have a vested interest..

No I think Verify Apps was supposed to check only non play store apps. That's why the first time you install an app from a file manager or something it'll ask you to allow Verify Apps to check app security.

I'm trying to run it on the fire tv stick, and it runs fine up till the first conversation. (menus, character creation, video, waking up, and then the guy runs in) As soon as the guy starts to speak, it crashes. I can't figure out what is going on. attach a logcat if that would be of use to anyone that can help me diagnose the problem
Just as an update, I copied a savegame from the PC version to the fire stick. The game loads and let me run around. It crashes again once someone begins speaking. I think there must be something wrong with the audio decoder or something. It plays the music just fine, however. I even heard a brief glimpse of Carth's first line as you travel through the ship.
In the logcat i posted earlier, it mentions: "Failed to open libwvm.so"
From what I understand in my reading, this is some sort of drm decoder for wav files.
I looked in /system/lib and there is no libwvm.so file there. Could this be what is causing the app to crash?
Thanks again for any help

widevine is the DRM system normal android devices use. But Amazon doesn't use it. If you're using something that requires it, it won't work.

That makes sense to me. I think if this is the underlying cause, then it wouldn't work on the regular Fire TV either. Since it is working on the regular Fire TV, I think I need to look for a different cause.
Yeah, I know it's kind of "out there", but consider the problem a proof-of-concept exercise
I've found an old version of the app that will install and "run" on Eclair--but not so old that it still tries to log into GoogleVoice. I can get past the intro screen but for the "sign in" screen I get a white-out condition except for the little bar that says "Sign in". The menu options (help and exit) can still be brought up.
I use GrooVe IP Lite on my Nook Tablet and a cheap little unactivated Kit-Kat smartphone I bought as a dedicated mp3 player (after my beloved Insignia Pilot died :crying. It works great for an emergency call if you can scare up wi-fi----and it's free (to any land-line in the US or Canada--cell phones too, I guess). In this respect it seems better than Skype to me unless you have a lot of overseas contacts (I don't).
So....I uninstalled the current app from my little Kit-Kat device and side-loaded the old app. It ran just fine, allowed me to sign in, etc. Once signed in and exited, the next time the app starts you are already signed in. Hmm. I started digging in the /data/data folder for the app and came across two xml files of preferences, one of which clearly contained log-in information (my assigned telephone number, my email, etc.). So I tried copying that file to the same folder on the NST, hoping to get past the indomitable white-out. No joy. Same behavior AND when I checked the xml file I had overwritten it had been returned to a generic state, minus my personal data
I tried two other things. I reactivated the old phone.apk system app. That made no difference. I didn't try the telephony or whatever that other one is. I also started up USB audio before going to the app, thinking it might check for audio capabilities (and it still might) but that made no difference.
I'd probably never use the app on the NST but I am curious about what is keeping it from working. Perhaps the voip server just rejects log-in attempts from really old Android systems.
Any ideas?
Sorry for necroposting but this topic is in line of mine reasoning to use device as much as possible as it is. So if it does not have camera why would you need a Skype or Whatsapp? As a VoIP phone that is OK. Did you made any progress on that one? I am asking because I have a feeling that it might be possible to write an application that would work like VoIP/SIP/web phone to completely remove Phone.apk that reside in NST.

No, I eventually gave up on the idea. It was only a lark from the start, just to see if it would be possible, but the demands of the task exceeded my knowledge. GrooveIP has changed the way connections are made as well as encryption schemes several times over since I first looked at the issue. All that aside, I doubt that the device could now login to the new servers even if all the code were properly in place.
Re: Phone.apk, on the NST this is where the control of the Android volume resides, so if you remove that you lose the ability to control the media volume (or any volume, for that matter). I eventually discovered this after a lot of flailing around with kludges to prevent the media volume from blasting out when using USB Audio. Many people had deactivated or deleted Phone.apk (me too). When I re-enabled the app I suddenly had access to the volume controls.

First thanks for reply. Second does that mean you won't have anything against me trying to do something like that... it might not be GrooVeIP since I haven't decided what service would be optimal to begin with. Third I have read your experiments with Phone.apk and that part of volume control resides there that is why I suggest not to remove it but rewrite it in a more usable form. Even if I fail doing that at least I might have satisfaction in knowing that I tried.

By all means, give it a try! Supposedly some versions of WhatsApp would run on the NST. Again, whether you could log in to a server is another matter.

I also think that WhatsApp would fail since company promised support for devices with Android older then 2.3 would be maintained until February of this year. Still some other existing software might go through installation process and be registered using code sent to mobile phone that have same software or maybe I find something new who knows.
