I was wondering what some opinions are with how hot
The phone gets with overclocking and when to shut it
Down ? With playing around on the phone it gets to 107*

If my conversion is right thats 41.67 degrees Celsius.:eek Personally, I wouldnt be comfortable letting it get that hot.
I have a SetCPU profile that if my G2 reaches 38.2 degrees Celsius it underclocks it to 245 (max and min frequency, with performance governor). My G2 has never reached over 34 degrees Celsius though. My daily overclock is in my sig (1.5ghz).

CPU wise it's fine, other parts of the phone and your hand may not be. If it's too hot to hold it's too hot.
Just a note that temperature is the battery temperature and not the CPU temperature.

I say keep it under 40 degrees Celsius and you're fine.
My phone has only once gotten that hot. I was running a game app on my phone for over an hour straight and I had a case on. Holding the phone in my hand only added to the heat. My temp profile kicked in and I let my phone chill for a while and it came back to normal.
I do not however underclock it to 245 Mhz. I take it down to normal clock speeds of 806 Mhz and that seems to work well for me.
if you dont care about how hot your phone gets or if your watching it ive takin mine up to 1.5 GHz
My nexus one used to reboot at high temperatures. First the screen would become unresponsive, then it would just reset. I think it started doing that when it got into the mid 40s.
So I was just playing homerun battle 3d for a couple of hours and noticed the back getting fairly warm.... Shut it down and looked at setcpu, 117.5F degrees or 38C!!! Hmm lol and its still running like a champ. Might need to set a temp. profile fo sho!

Your conversions are not that great. 40 degrees Celsius is 104 degrees Fahrenheit.
So was your phone at 117.5F or was it at 38C? It can't be both at the same time.
38C isn't bad. 117.5F is quite hot, however.
I'll run the 1.516 GHz OC until the battery gets to 100.4 F. Then I drop it down to 768 MHz. However, when the phone is below the max temp I have it set to 1516 max/256 min (I think it's 256 it might be something else, but I'm too lazy to check). So my phone only starts cooking when I'm running my PSX emulator or something fierce

LoL...my bad I meant 48C. And yes it was hot but the phone handled it. I enabled the temp profile back to clock 800 mhz when it hits 104F

I belelive not,myne is 35 C too,if its on warm place like bed or carpet etc that helps degrees to grove and outside temp is also high so...
35c is quite normal.
And may I know your surroundings temp .

And the phone is at 32,4C
Mine sometimes gets to 41.2C. Ambient Temp is 33C. So, yea, it's quite hot after some internet browsing on Wifi.
So am running classic stability test 2.7, and I've ran this before and my CPU get to 60°C or after like 15 minutes, I ran it today out of sheer curiosity and it started to show 91°C. Am using cm with there kernel since I recently flashed the latest nightly and thought how would it differ from matrixes. Another thing it can be that the values are being incorrectly displayed. Is this something I should worry about? Am really not in the mood for an RMA and losing my phone. Shouldnt of the system shut itself down after a certain limit as a fail safe?

Are you sure it is Celsius and not Fahrenheit? Is about 33 degrees Celsius. At 91 degrees it would have shut down and rebooted a long time before reaching that temperature.
Trickster mod says its °C so?
edit: the device itself gets very very hot which am sure if it was running at 30 it would be fairly cool would it not?

- touch the back, if it's 91C your fingers will know.

it was very hot I had to put it down so am guessing its 90C, but now its a lot better, it seems it wasn't throttling proper? it attempted to run the entire thing at 1.5ghz constantly, rather than it's usually clocking down to 1.1ghz. Now it's throttling and while its at 78C, it just feels warm and it actually being managed.
I flashed back to matrix's kernel and prefed to use the scaling test which would probably be closer to real life usage and its running 45C. I really like CM and don't want to flash back to stock but I may end up doing it

Must be a mistake. 91 degrees Celsius is almost 200 Degrees Fahrenheit, that would melt the plastic on the phone, and burn your fingers.

not true. ive forced mine to hit 100C. its the cpu temp, not the temp of the outside of your phone. ive even hit 110C with my galaxy nexus. it doesnt stay at those temps long enough to melt your phone, lol.

stability tests are meant to push your cpu to its limits. pushing the cpu to its limits will create lots of heat. it is meant to do that. if youre using stability tests, you can not complain about heat. its like putting your car in neutral then flooring the gas pedal, itll cause your engine to get hot, especially if you do it for 15 minutes.

ahh k my bad, I didnt realize it was internal temp. Thats crazy you hit 110 c the most ive ever seen mine hit is 40 c

safety cpu shutdown for the gnex is 110C. as soon as i saw it hit 110C, it shut down. but you really have to try to get it to that point by stressing it awfully hard. same with the nexus 4, 100C is the safety shutdown. running certain benchmarks or stress tests are the only ways to get it that hot. which is why it makes no sense that someone running a stress test for 15 minutes is complaining about heat, asking if he should rma his device.

I think you are referring to battery temp and not CPU temp. Unless you live somewhere very cold it would be quite difficult for your CPU not to go over 40c

Canada its fkin freezing!! just checked set cpu and its 23 c, but im just scrolling through twitter, not really doing anything else.
The points that I would be concerned with temps are
Battery > 50°C
CPU > 80°C
This is based on stock thermal throttle at 60°C CPU
On Franco kernel I have upped my throttle limit to 70°C so I wouldn't be concerned unless it went above 85.
You will know if your battery is at a dangerous temperature because it will be very uncomfortable to hold
I just played some beach buggy blitz for 10 mins.
CPU jumped up 20° from idle up to 50° but again well within my tolerance

for the record am not asking if I can RMA, am happy with my device and really don't need to lose it for a week. But this just started happening more frequently. Sometimes the thermald ****s up and it doesn't throttle at all, at times I could be just playing GTA, Worms, Plague etc I usually don't notice because the phones down on the table, pick it up and owwwww flashing back to matrix solved the majority of it tbh. Right now it's sitting on 31C idle, it'll be about 40-50C on chrome funnily enough, and then 60ishC on games, pushing 70 depending how long I leave it on. I see that as fairly normal tbh, but 90C? I wouldn't even trust my fan cooled i5 to go there.
And am back were I started just playing 2 minutes of batman and its at 70°C and burning my hand

but yea, its possible to reach those high temps if, and only if, pushing your cpu. itll get warmer faster if your gpu is overclocked(is gpu overclocked in franco kernel?). now, if doing nothing and the phone gets that hot, thats a problem(software or hardware).
nah its not overclocked, atm its cooled down, although it does take a while to drop from a high temp to something low even on idle.

Is that normal?
I also have an undervolt ( -125 mV).

60C is a normal temperature for the cpu, not even close to overheating. is your phone in a case?

well..i'd experienced that kind of increasing temperature,but limit was 45 c only,otherwise,i'm using 3g network,with wifi,no such increase in temperature
I experienced same problem today (went on family roadtrip so I was using 3G for browsing otherwise i use WiFi). I use PA 3.15 26April and Franco kernel r134. With -100 mV undervolt and high frequency 1188Mhz. Phone became realy hot I would say around 50°C (back glass) but heat didnt come from CPU but from right and a bit up from CPU.

its either from the cpu or battery. if the heat was close to the camera(up), then its cpu. if its cpu, then its way below overheating.

I download a battery temperature reader and a CPU temperature measurer. At Idle the batter temperature is at about 33-36 degrees Celsuis. And the CPU temperature at Idle is usually in the lower 40's at idle. Are these Temperatures to high?
Also When I plays games or use any apps for a just a few minutes the battery Temperatures get at around 40 degress C and the CPU temp is usually around the 45-50 area. Again Are these temperature to high?
I would really appreciate if anyone could give me useful help on this issue I'm having with my phone.

I'm assuming your Nexus 4 is a newer one (rev. 11). Nexus 4s have been known to run quite hot. My rev. 10 is at 42 C coming out of sleep without use, earlier when I played Need for Speed, it got to 60 C. It seems to be normal for mine, although it does get uncomfortably hot.

completely normal. right smack in the middle of the range of normal. remember, human body temperature average is 37C or 98.6F. when you use your device, the temp will go up when you use a cpu intensive game, the temperature will get even hotter. this all also depends on the surrounding air temperature. the warmer it is around, the warmer the device will get or idle.
Normal. Because the back is made of glass, it absorbs the heat and you feel it more than other phones.

Hmm, That seems weird, if the phone throttles you at 37 degrees shouldn't my phone not be idling at that temperature, and the my front screen seems to get warm after slight usage to. And looking on other forums people with a stock nexus 4 said that there phone idles around mid twenties, not the lower-mid thirties.

for hard working with QuadCore it s normal to get ~40 C quickly
But after 40C i think it s not normal and it s better to ask official service

look at the time they were posted. now its warmer eveeywhere. and again, human body temp is 37C. you have a quad core phone, it WILL get hot at times, that is normal. pushing the device, you might even see 70C or 75C.

Hmm okay I have pushed the phone and the highest CPU temp I reached was about 60ish. I'm not exactly worried about how hot it gets, it's just how fast it gets hot, it seems a little odd that just running facebook and twitter for a few minutes can get the battery temperature up to 40 degrees celsius.

That sounds similar to the results that I have found on the web, people said that to get there battery temperature up to 40 degress they have to push the phone, mine gets there just by opening a few apps.
If you want to cool it down and you are happy with messing about with your phone, try undervolting the CPU. Although I tend not to check the temperature, my phone (UVd by around -150) feels far cooler; playing Real Racing it doesn't get as warm as simple browsing would on stock.

I have heard of this, but I'm more focused on how the temperature should be on this phone untampered. Rooting and tweaking kind of scares me a bit.

Try faux kernel and undervolt t by -125 my friend using that combo and its mostly 25degrees.

40C is not hot. get that out of your head. idle temp will depend on the air temperature around you. yesterday was 91 in nyc, my phone was idling between 39-42C. stick your hand in 40C water, itll barely feel warm.

On a surface like metal it would, but not in water. That said, the back of the phone isn't water but I'm sure the temperature of the back of the phone is lower than the CPU

Couldn't agree more, The back of the phone I wouldn't say it HOT, but it is definitely very warm. But I'm not talking about how hot the phone feels. I'm trying to ask about the internal temperatures and if it's normal for it to heat up so fast.

again. this is normal. 104F would not feel more than slightly warm water.
the glass in the back of the phone is there to draw out the heat from the phone. its glass, and will feel warm. if you have problems with 40C, then i would recommend that you buy a dumb phone. my nexus 7, galaxy nexus, and nexus 4 all idle a bit warmer now than in winter. 40C is very normal.

my s5 gets hot very quickly.. when i use it for 10-15mins (very light use checking mail and browsing).. it gets warm... when on moderate use (transfering lots of stuff on sdcard) it gets hot .... and when using a lot of apps (not even gaming).. it gets really really hot.
I installed cpu temp and I get temperatures like 60 degrees... sometimes i even get warning it's over 70 degrees.
I am on kitkat neatrom. will lollipop help with the heat? Is it actually normal? My friend has galaxy s4 mini and it does not get hot.. only warm under similar heavy load

No is not normal.Not even in games. When i was on kit kat hw accelerate h265 1080p movies only played in sw mod and then my cpu never got over 70 (and this is a ****ing cpu intensive **** for 1-2 h) and after finish the movie temp got lower immediately.
Don't use kernel others than stock!
I am on stock... I will try a stock rooted lollipop rom... I get 70 degrees at times (some peak..it's not continous i think ).. average max temp is 61 degrees celcius... is this dangerous? It's quite hot to touch the screen. Meanwhile I underclocked my max cpu freq to see how it performs.
can someone install stabilitytest and do the classic test for 5-10mins and tell me what battery temp they get? I get 36.1 - 37.5 degrees but i underclocked my cpu to 1190mhz. I feel the device being warm... top of the phone is warmest
edit: done same test on my old htc desire and the temp gets max at 33.6 to 34.6 but the device does not feel warm at all.. wdf is wrong with the galaxy s5?

I'll do the tests for you. Tell what apps to use (more tests is accurate). give me their google play link and i'll post screenshots

in cputemp, go to changing curve to see the cpu temp monitor.
in cputemp --> settings --> you can enable cpu temp overlay.. it will show you the temp in status bar... can you tell me what do you get when idle and what do you get while doing the stabilitytest. thx

Thx for tests! So it does get pretty hot for you too on load but your battery temp is much lower than me. It is 36 to 38 for me undet load maybe thats because i am using a case? Do you feel the touchscreen very hot when doing the tests?
But normal temp is still high for me. It is 46 to 56 degrees doing just light tasks like browsing and gmail. Will try to factory reset. Maybe a nasty app causing it.

anyone else having heat issues?are all snapdragon 801 phones that hot? I am considering selling my s5... I only had it for a few months... It's the first flagship device I bought and I am amazed that it has that kind of issues. (I also get a can't wake up issue).. unbelievable...
