i have the HTC EVO and have been running Flipz FreshROM since he first put out his custom EVO ROM and even used his HERO ROMs before that. my wife has an Epic now, which i rooted back in October. she's currently running the last official update from Samsung (DI18, i believe) and i wanted to update her to the latest release (DK28).
what are the best custom ROMs to use that are based off of the DK28 update?
is it best just to update to DK28, then root and not worry about a custom ROM?
in order to update to DK28, do i have to unroot first or is there an already unrooted DK28 ROM that i could flash?
thanks for the help.

In my opinion, different people will have different opinions regarding which ROM is the "best". User experience can vary from person to person. What may not be an issue to one person may be a deal breaker for another.
I would recommend trying each until you find one that meets your needs. To update to DK28, I would recommend following this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=853209
Couldnt be easier. If you find that you have issues with DK28, use ODIN to get back to 2.1 and then reroot. The process is simple and easy to find if you search. Personally, the second time I tired DK28, I used ODIN to go back to stock 2.1, then used the link above to go to DK28. I would also recommend giving your phone a few days to adjust to 2.2. This helped some of my issues work themselves out.
Use odin to flash the dk28 modem first. I can't post links yet but look in the ViperRom thread for a good zip of Odin with the dk28 modem and the correct Pit file. Unzip everything, untar the modem.tar. Turn off your phone. Boot while holding the 1 key down (you get a Yellow Icon in the middle of the screen). Run Odin, Place the modem.bin file in the PHONE slot in odin, put the .PIT file in the PIT slot in odin. Plug the phone into the computer. Odin will see your phone as a COM# port, any number is fine. Auto-Reboot and F.Reset Time should be the ONLY things checkmarked in options. Click start.
Its complicated but it works pretty good. The phone will restart and run with the DI18 and the DK28 modem. Get a GPS Lock in Navigation or Google Maps on the phone, make sure it locks! Skipping this step has led to some people not being able to get locks with the internal gps on epics with dk28.
Apply the oneclick root found in the forums (Android Developement).
Pick a rom, i think Bonsai 1.04 is very stable and pretty with its elegant font.. not so strongly masculine like some of the custom roms. Download the rom and put it on the sdcard, boot into clockwork (volume down, camera and the power button simultaneously) and wipe / factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache. Flash the rom...zip off the sdcard and then reboot.
Yes you can flash directly dk28 with modem using ODIN.. I tried the OTA zip on a stock DI18 and couldn't get that to work for me. But when I went direct to dk28 from di18 i lost gps.
Anyway, just my story, and what I did. I love my custom rom, but it took me hours to figure it out. I hope these instructions are complete and errorfree, but it would be a good idea to read forum threads about this stuff besides just what I have to say. ViperROM's thread was especially helpful with the odin use stuff. There is a wiki about it too, but im not allowed to post links, oops.
I don't know if it was just me but I immediately jumped on the DK28 band wagon, and yes it was cool but for me it was somewhat unstable. My Wifi was borked, sometimes it'd go on perfect, other times I'd hit the widget in the pulldown, and it'd sit there green and do nothing. i'd have to go into the Settings -> Wifi and it'd say "Error". So like I said I don't know if it was just me cause everyone else here loves it. Anyway just thought I'd let you know!
Good luck!

if i'm wiping everything and flashing a custom DK28-based ROM, do i need to unroot, flash the stock DK28, re-root and then flash? or could i just wipe the current state of her Epic and flash the Bonsai ROM? i know with my EVO that i have to update the baseband/radio separately from the ROM, but whenever i want to update my EVO, i just wipe and re-flash the new ROM.

I was having voice problems myself... lots of distortion at high volumes. Went back to 2.1 and the problem is gone.

Check out Quantum rom, with EXT4..Just did my wifes epic,no issues at all....BTW i run fresh 3.5, good rom....
I have a question about roms and the (eventual) update to official froyo...will those of us on DK28 need to flash back to use custom roms or will we be able to simply odin a new modem and install a new rom? Or better yet, not have to odin anything and just be able to flash in CWM.
Hello all,
Been rambling around the forums in ninja mode trying to gain enough knowledge to not mess up my phone before trying to mod it but alas best laid plans....
Anyhoo I was working to put the Froyo leak on my phone and everything was good till I did a cwm wipe of the phone and wammo it had problems. I managed to use Odin to get it back to barebones stock, lost my high score in Angry Birds too dang it.
Now that I am back to this point I tried to run the Verizin updates and it downloads and goes into install mode on reboot and it dies at Updating Modem section. At that point I saw I was rooted so I removed that and tried again, no dice amigo. Did a factory wipe, nothing. Cleared the cache, fail again.
If it helps its trying to do a dh12 to di01 update. Got any ideas?
When you went to stock did you flash the stock kernel and stock recovery as well? I had to do this when I updated to dl09
Good question and yes I believe I did, I followed this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=782204&highlight=return+stock thread to get the job done. Let me try it one more time.
Also I load the PIT file with each md5 correct?
Looks like I fixed it on the second time around. Not sure what I missed but the update went through. No worries. Might pay someone to hand hold my through getting DL30 on my phone cause even as an IT guy I'm missing something every time.
Strong thing is, once the DI01 update happens it actually doesn't find any other updates...wifi is off.
VZW pulled the DL09 update due to the e911 bug until it is fixed
Makes good sense. Sooo anyone wanna tutorialize me on how to de-crappify my phone? Its worth a donation from me.
You're on di01 right?
I would odin the dl09 package, then use cwm to flash super clean 2.2. Clean, debloated froyo goodness

Sounds good. The problem lies in me somehow fudging up the process at some point and having to set my phone back to stock again.
Where did you see this?
"VZW pulled the DL09 update due to the e911 bug until it is fixed"
Have any sources on this one? I really would like to see them.
Not doubting you, I have just been rebooting and *228 for 3 days trying to get this update only to see this quote...
VZW sent a message to all Fascinate owners the other night acknowledging the bug and a fix being in the works. Why would they continue to push it out after that?

New EA update is being pushed out.
Verizon told me to go to a store as some phones will not accept OTA updates. Seems stupid and like a lie, but whatever...

He's right. Google the source if you need it. Please don't take this response as me being snarky, I don't mean it that way.
I think the biggest issue people are having is not being careful and following the directions perfectly.
I was new two days ago and did this with only one hiccup.
1. I followed the Beginner's thread in this forum to get me rooted. First pass with Odin failed as the one click code didn't recognize the phone. 2nd pas worked. Trick was to just turn on USB debugging and plug in phone, do not then click the mount notification. Leave that off as USB debugging was all that was needed.
2. I installed Mod Manager and Titanium backup right after. This was part of the main directions and Titanium (though not mentioned) allowed me to save all my specific apps that had important data, like my 100% completed Angry Birds.
3. I then followed the directions in the developer forum for the How To.. install DL30 for Froyo. This scared me at first because the CW recovery stalled when wiping data. I waited over 30 minutes before getting the courage to pull the battery and start over. Figured its only deleting user data, should be ok. It was and then it worked the 2nd time without fail. I did reboot in normal recovery, but running the update.zip put it back into CW.
4. After that, I rebooted numerous times, checked all stock apps, upgraded firmware in camera, and used Titanium to add back my apps I bought or downloaded as well as restored my bookmarks and memo notes.
In the end I've had no bugs/issues as others have reported. Only functionality not tested is bluetooth as I don't use it for anything.
I hope this helps and if you are walking through it all again, I would be glad to help specific questions based on my experience.
I was DL09 stock OTA at first. I'd recommend getting rooted and using Odin to get the stock DL09 from these forums flashed before you try to put DL30 on. As a developer myself, it just makes sense to always put on builds that are in order of each other. So DI01, then DL09, then DL30.

superchunkwii, thanks for the feedback. When I booted into cwm recovery mode it hung too. I think my fatal mistake was I booted in regular recovery mode and did my wipe....sad. I should have just rebooted and went back in cwm like you did.
As far as freezing apps I did not know freezing angry birds would save its data. Boy was my wife is mad (she plays it the most).
I did everything else on cue so I will try again and see how she goes. IT CAN BE TAUGHT! As the genie says.
On another note I did download the EA28 update today, can I install the DL30 Rom or do I need to "downgrade" to DL09 to get this done? Anyone try?

1. Not freeze.. that makes it so app won't run. Backup with Titanium Backup is what you need I think.
2. What is EA28? I don't think the fascinate has had that build.
Just got an update EA28 any ideas what it does

EA28 build is the update to fix the emrgency dialing bug in DL09. As I understand, it is otherwise the same as DL09. I am by no means an expert though.

Cool. Can anyone confirm this?
I flashed from TW Bionix-v 1.21 to Trigger 2.1.1 and though the flash went great and the rom seemed to work perfect, my data is all messed up. It seems stuck on E now where before I was always on H. Speedtest has gone from 4000kbps down to 120kbps down. I flashed back to Bionix and even flashed in the KA6 modem that I had the best results with before and the problem still persists. In Boinix it will show the data speed as H, but as soon as I try to access the internet or use Speedtest, it drops to G, then to E. I'm lost as to where to go from here. Any help is greatly appreciated.
What about flashing back to stock using odin then reflashing the rom
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Woah, wait up don't flash back to stock or anything. Follow this thread, it has all the modem software in it. I suggest using Odin...it's real simple, just dl the file extract it and load it into the phone section in odin and hit start....BAM you got a new modem. Do tests with JL5, it's a good modem.
I was thinking of flashing back to stock but I've never done it before. Is there anything I need to do differently because of Voodoo? I may just go the AIO Toolbox method if that's ok.
I won't be doing anything until later tonight. I've flashed a few modems in the modem thread, but none have fixed this problem. I may just flash back to stock (I really don't mind), but I'm just nervous about doing it because of having Voodoo on my phone right now. Can I just flash back to stock using the AIO Tools, or is this ill-advised?
Always best to disable lag fixes, I do it even if I don't have to. If the problem is persisting through different modems I dunno what's up....maybe hardware related? Maybe try one of those cell reception mods. That'd be the absolute last thing I'd do though, try every modem if you can.
I really don't know what happened. It may have even been a bad flash with Trigger, that's when things went bad. Honestly I wish I'd have just stayed put with Bionix. The phone was working perfectly with it. Oh well, I think I'll try flashing back to stock, then going back to Bionix.
Try this:
Settings-->Wireless and Network-->Mobile Networks-->Network Mode
I have mine set to WCDMA only. I only use Auto mode when I travel outside of town. Works great and keeps me out of the edge network.

DUDE, if you haven't ever flashed back to stock, I recommend it now then reflash the new rom. It will totally clean up in ghost data in the phone.
Remember the sequence is Backup everything 1st, then disable the lagfix, Then flash the froyo that does not brick (do not check the repartition box), then flash Stock JFD (this time check the repartition box) Then Root, then, the flash your new rom then Download Rom manager and titanium backup and you are good to go.
BTW, you most likely got a corrupted bit of software in the flash or already it was on the phone but there is no way of knowing, THAT is why you should do this.

Sorry to hear that man. I've had this problem before... looong ago. I had just flashed a new release of a TW ROM and all the sudden my data was stuck on E. I was freaking out just like you haha. I odined to stock and reflashed at least 3 times and the problem persisted.
I just left the phone on overnight and it seemed to work itself out by morning. Maybe it was T-Mobile doing maintenance or maybe the phone was just being retarded...
Either way, I'd suggest flashing back to stock at least once to clear things up. Check back in the AM and see if it's fixed or not

I've never flashed back to stock, and of course all of these excellent custom roms have me flashing like a madman. I think I've flashed at least 5 different roms in the last month at least. I think I understand what you mean by "ghost" data. It's like the old days in Windows 98 where an upgrade install was never as good as a clean install. Flashing back to stock is sort of a clean install for Android I'm guessing?

Ok, this is strange. It looks like this is exactly what's happening. I'm now getting 4000+kbps down again on H. All day though the phone has been bouncing down to E every time I access the internet, go to market, etc. Upload is still quite a bit lower than it used to be though. Still, in the back of my mind though I feel like what oka said above is probably not a bad idea. For peace of mind I'm going to flash back to stock using AIO Vibrant Toolbox, then root, then flash either Bionix or Trigger back on.
Btw, for the short amount of time I had Trigger installed on my phone, I can tell you that it's a VERY nice rom. It looks great and is at least as fast, if not faster than Bionix. Great, great work.
I was having this problem earlier today too on Bionix. I was downloading Quadrant and I was stuck in E for a couple of hours. Must be something wrong with Bionix. Either way it's working now and I hope you solve your problem!

Alright, this issue has seriously driven me insane over the last few days, and today it's gotten to the point where I'm going to do something I'll regret if somebody can't help me out. As you can tell, I'm pretty desperate.
Using Fresh 3.5.0.1, I've encountered more reboots than I can count. Whether it's checking an email or playing Asphalt, the phone frequently decides it doesn't want to cooperate and restarts itself. I decided to try to get rid of the reboots for good today with a complete wipe and new rom.
First, I made a nandroid backup, followed by a data/system wipe and cache/dalvik cache wipe. Afterward, I flashed the ZenDroid 1.1.0 kernel in case that was the issue. I then proceeded to flash CyanogenMod 7 RC1 with gapps.
That worked for all of three minutes, and then it got even worse. The phone started restarted itself when I wasn't even doing anything, up to the point where it would restart on the CM7 boot animation. I took my rage out on a nearby pillow and decided to try something else.
I downloaded the final release MIUI rom and used Calkulin's format all to wipe my phone as instructed. This time around I flashed Savage-Kernel 1.6 along with MIUI. Lo and behold, after rebooting I was finally able to swipe through the home screens again.
And then I wasn't. It started rebooting on the boot animation again. At the moment it's even worse, rebooting three seconds into the damned splash screen. I've tried keeping the battery pulled for half an hour with the HTC battery and two after market batteries. I wiped the ext partition on the micro sd card. I even physically removed the card itself. This effing phone is still rebooting on the splash screen.
I'm at the end of my wits. All I want is for my Evo to WORK, without any constant reboots or force closes that make it utterly unusable outside. If anyone could help me out with this issue, I'd be extraordinarily grateful.

i don't know what kernel fresh comes with, but both of the other kernels are more aggressive ones, and i would guess your phone doesn't like them. i would try this:
Wipe twice using calk, wipe again using recovery, flash mikfroyo or stock rooted (stock kernel). If you still get reboots... unroot and take your phone back in because its a hardware problem.
I had this problem. Drove me insane. Ultimately just unrooted and got a new one from sprint. Not one reboot since I got the new one.

Well I'm still super new to the whole flashing of the ROM's. But from what you have explained the only thing I can think of is that you missed a step when you rooted your phone. Because of this that is why your phone keeps brick. You should go and check out HTC EVO Hacks (go Google it) and the guy who runs the site made a sweet video & write-up on how to root your phone. Just re-do everything and follow directions, then when your done just flash Kings Unleashed. And when you check out the HTC EVO hacks root page look for the link to the XDA root forum which has more info on how to root your HTC the proper way.

Yeah, I guess I should try the stock rooted rom. If I'm only able to use that instead of any other custom rom, though, I'm going to lose it. There's something inherently frustrating about a device refusing to work for no apparent reason.

I'm pretty sure that isn't the case at all. If there was an issue with the way I rooted my phone, it would have been present eight months ago when I bought it. This rebooting issue is relatively new, and it isn't bricked. I appreciate the advice, though.
It could be just a defective phone - memory isn't immortal or impervious to defects.
I'd downgrade to a Sprint ROM, and keep it stock and see how that works. You have to rule out bad hardware first, and that's the only way to do it.
I agree on all of your guys suggestions but one thing i noticed was that he said he wiped data then dalvic cache then he said he flashed the kernel then the rom. Maybe he should try and rewipe everything with calk format all then flash the rom and reboot. Then go back into recovery and flash your new kernel then reboot again and see whats up from there.
Have you tried repartitioning your SD card and formatting? I was getting random reboots on every single rom I tried, and every single kernel. Turns out my partitions somehow got messed up on my SD card and that was causing it randomly. Now I have no reboots.

Yes, I first formatted the sd card in Windows and then partitioning it on the phone's recovery. Still no luck.
Yeah... Sprint rom or if you go through with the unrooting process (I forgot how...) then you can figure out if it is hardware.
But yeah, endless reboots are frustrating.
If Sprint rom is giving you troubles, then just return it and get a new one. It's gotta be hardware then.
Also you could try running stock rooted without any downloaded market apps. Just run what came with the phone.
You can also try stock rooted eclair 2.1
Mine started the reboot bs after the december update. Mine seems to reboot when I use it heavily even though I'm not overclocked (heats up). Before the 2.2 update, it was very fussy being outside during the summer. I would like to exchange mine for another, even though I don't use it anymore. It would be nice to have a fully functioning backup. My gf's daughter wants the evo very much. Even if I would do that, which I wouldn't, I wouldn't let someone use a possibly unstable phone. If an emergency happened, and the phone started it's rebooting bs, it would be very bad to not be able to use the phone when you need it the most.
I am guessing I would have to reactivate the evo, run it for a month or so, unroot and lock it, then take it to a service center and see if I can make it start rebooting like crazy. Maybe I will get lucky and they would give me another one. I don't care too much if it is a refurb as long as it is in good shape and works good.
Try removing the SD card and booting.

rebooting
I had this same problem with my evo. Sometimes it would be ok, but then others it wouldnt stop doing it, didnt matter what I did. It could be sitting by itself and I would hear it rebooting. Drove me mad!!!
My first evo was awesome, it was a hardware ver 3. My camera lens cracked and the gave me a refurb, hardware version 2. This is when my reboots started happening.
After 3 batteries from Sprint and two more refurbs I finally blew in front of a store full of customers telling them that either give me a NEW evo, hardware version 3 like I originally had with no problems or it was going against their wall.
I havent had one problem since.
I wasnt rooted yet so cant comment along those lines but if you take it back to stock and it still does it I recommend throwing it at one of Sprints walls. No need to do any drywall patching at your place LOL.
I hope you get it resolved as I can feel your pain!
It may not be hardware. Did you restore any apps using any back up app (Titanium Backup) after flashing the AOSP roms? If so, make sure you did NOT restore any system apps or data. This is especially important when you go from Sense to AOSP.
The test is what everyone is suggesting. Flash back to Sprint rom and see what happens.
Also, you need to flash the kernel after flashing the rom, otherwise you'll just get the kernel packaged with the rom. I usually reboot and art least try the default kernel unless I know that my phone hates it.

No, I haven't even been able to get to the stage of installing any apps before the rebooting cycle starts again. I tried installing the stock Sprint rom this morning with the stock radios and kernel and it was stable for about five minutes. It's back to rebooting again, though.
Do you guys think it's time to unroot and go to the Sprint store for an exchange?

If it was me, I would take it back. I just downloaded the newest ruu and will flash it later tonight. The only thing I'm worrying about is they won't be able to reproduce the problem. I really have to be multitasking a lot and pushing the phone hard. Actually the last time it had rebooting fits was with wireless tether running. The back of the phone was warm. I put it in front of the ac vent in the car for a minute or two and that seemed to help it stop rebooting.

Well, it looks like I'll be taking it to the store after all. I just finished unrooting my phone with the RUU, so it's as if I had never touched the software. Lo and behold, the damned thing still rebooted a minute into using the phone.
I guess that in some sick way, I can consider myself more 'fortunate' than you, seeing as how my phone doesn't even need to be used in order to begin rebooting. It's ridiculous that I have to part with my Evo because of this bs.

Same thing happend with my old evo it started after i install one of the first cm safe roms not nightlies not saying tyat was the cause, i tried evverything wiping unrooting botting without sd, ive been on android sice g1 and i tried everything nothing worked, ended up going to sprint and getting another refurnished it was prolly hardware issue maybe cpu overheating or something, anyways not sure why ppl are so scared of refurnished phones i believe they do a lot more tests on those phone than retail ones lol

Yes. I've already said I tried booting the phone without the sd card several times now without success.
This is my first post in XDA.I hope this is the right spot for this questions.
I have searched everywhere for the answers to this question before posting. I flashed to CM7 with the tiamat kernel awhile back. I love CM7 but was curious to see what other rom developers are doing.
I ALWAYS do a back up before doing any flashes. I backed up my CM7 and my base rooted HTC downgraded 2.2 through RM. I was able to flash to synergy with no problems and restore to CM7. I decided to check out MIUI over the weekend. I flashed it with no problem. Last night I wanted to try mikshifted-g and Supreme Sense . I could not install either of them . The both stalled once CWM started to install. It was stuck on updating. There were no errors. I took the battery out and tried to restore CM7 backup through CWM. The restore went as expect but when I went to reboot it was only the HTC logo. I took the battery out and went back to MIUI through CWM and the phone booted. I then did a restore of my original rooted 2.2 the phone booted. I tried to install the above again on a fresh HTC stock rooted phone through RM and still had the same thing happen.
My question, is why I am not able to flash any other roms successfully other than restoring to MIUI and stock rooted htc 2.2 ? Installing Synergy works !
I do a full flash of system, data, cache and dalvik cache. I am not sure what I am missing.
If I understand correctly MIUI is a GB kernel as well as the others so there should not be a problem of compatibility ? I am assuming I still have root ? My HBOOT does say S off and PG 06001. I will try downloading CM7 through MIUI again to see if it works through RM. Sorry for the long post. I wanted to give as much detail as possible. Thanks in advance for any help

My suggestion would be don't use ROM Manager to flash, wipe or make nands. Do everything manually through recovery. I've seen too many people have the same type problems when using ROM manager.
what I have noticed is the progress bar in cwm doesn't work with sense roms, at least it never did in the mikshifted roms i tried and they take a LOT longer to install than cm7. How long did you let them sit at the install screen with that blank progress bar? Try clearing all your data/caches then install a sense based rom but leave your phone alone for like 10 minutes while it sits at that screen with the blank progress bar that says mikroms or whatever it says (been awhile since i used one). It shouldn't take 10 minutes but if your phone sits at that screen for that long then you know for sure it isn't working. I pulled my battery a couple times before i realized that's what was happening. I read about it somewhere online.
I have tried both RM and CWM. Both have the same results. 99% of the time I prefer the manual CWM method. Sorry I did not make it more clear.
I did re-flash CM7 with no problem. I do let the rom flash sit for a while but I will try longer since you say it takes longer with the roms in question. I let it sit for a few minutes. That seems like it should be more than enough. CM7 is pretty quick to install as well MIUI like you said. I love the layout and features of MIUI but since I am in a 4G area seems to defeat the purpose of having 4G if you can't use it. To be realistic though 4G is spotty in Atlanta and I mostly end up for 3G or using my wireless at home. I will probably end up with CM7 again since I like it equally as much as MIUI. If I wait longer for it to install and it does not work is there anything I should be looking at as the culprit other than myself
you were right, it just took a LONG time to install. I thought I was losing it. It took over 5 minutes. I am used to the install times of the MIUI and CM7 . Thanks for telling me to wait a little long. It's always the simple overlooked things like patients
My advice is just make sure you do a FULL Wipe before flashing a Rom. Like on THIS GUIDE, saves headaches later. Aslo, as you've learned Sense Roms usually take quite a bit longer than MIUI ,ASOP, or most others. But yes patience is important .
I definitely do a full wipe . I used all the guides here to make sure I did everything correct. I did not realize that the sense roms took longer than the CM or MIUI. I love the layout of MIUI. I wished it at some point 4G was going to be a part of it but I understand why it will not be .
4G in Atlanta, GA is not reliable, at least on my shift with sprint. I hate to pay for a feature that I am not able to use on regular basis. It's so spotty here I have gotten used to it.
I was never a big sense fan but it seems like if you want to have the 4G feature you use either use CM or another Sense rom right ? I got the shift because of how solid it's built and many reviews favor the EVOs or Galaxy S on Sprint
Thanks for all the feedback
Richard
Well you might want to give [AOSP ROM] S.O.A.P. ROM (sense-ish on android phones) a try. Sounds more like what your looking for. It's by one of the Shift members here.
