Hello all,
Been rambling around the forums in ninja mode trying to gain enough knowledge to not mess up my phone before trying to mod it but alas best laid plans....
Anyhoo I was working to put the Froyo leak on my phone and everything was good till I did a cwm wipe of the phone and wammo it had problems. I managed to use Odin to get it back to barebones stock, lost my high score in Angry Birds too dang it.
Now that I am back to this point I tried to run the Verizin updates and it downloads and goes into install mode on reboot and it dies at Updating Modem section. At that point I saw I was rooted so I removed that and tried again, no dice amigo. Did a factory wipe, nothing. Cleared the cache, fail again.
If it helps its trying to do a dh12 to di01 update. Got any ideas?
When you went to stock did you flash the stock kernel and stock recovery as well? I had to do this when I updated to dl09
Good question and yes I believe I did, I followed this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=782204&highlight=return+stock thread to get the job done. Let me try it one more time.
Also I load the PIT file with each md5 correct?
Looks like I fixed it on the second time around. Not sure what I missed but the update went through. No worries. Might pay someone to hand hold my through getting DL30 on my phone cause even as an IT guy I'm missing something every time.
Strong thing is, once the DI01 update happens it actually doesn't find any other updates...wifi is off.
VZW pulled the DL09 update due to the e911 bug until it is fixed
Makes good sense. Sooo anyone wanna tutorialize me on how to de-crappify my phone? Its worth a donation from me.
You're on di01 right?
I would odin the dl09 package, then use cwm to flash super clean 2.2. Clean, debloated froyo goodness

Sounds good. The problem lies in me somehow fudging up the process at some point and having to set my phone back to stock again.
Where did you see this?
"VZW pulled the DL09 update due to the e911 bug until it is fixed"
Have any sources on this one? I really would like to see them.
Not doubting you, I have just been rebooting and *228 for 3 days trying to get this update only to see this quote...
VZW sent a message to all Fascinate owners the other night acknowledging the bug and a fix being in the works. Why would they continue to push it out after that?

New EA update is being pushed out.
Verizon told me to go to a store as some phones will not accept OTA updates. Seems stupid and like a lie, but whatever...

He's right. Google the source if you need it. Please don't take this response as me being snarky, I don't mean it that way.
I think the biggest issue people are having is not being careful and following the directions perfectly.
I was new two days ago and did this with only one hiccup.
1. I followed the Beginner's thread in this forum to get me rooted. First pass with Odin failed as the one click code didn't recognize the phone. 2nd pas worked. Trick was to just turn on USB debugging and plug in phone, do not then click the mount notification. Leave that off as USB debugging was all that was needed.
2. I installed Mod Manager and Titanium backup right after. This was part of the main directions and Titanium (though not mentioned) allowed me to save all my specific apps that had important data, like my 100% completed Angry Birds.
3. I then followed the directions in the developer forum for the How To.. install DL30 for Froyo. This scared me at first because the CW recovery stalled when wiping data. I waited over 30 minutes before getting the courage to pull the battery and start over. Figured its only deleting user data, should be ok. It was and then it worked the 2nd time without fail. I did reboot in normal recovery, but running the update.zip put it back into CW.
4. After that, I rebooted numerous times, checked all stock apps, upgraded firmware in camera, and used Titanium to add back my apps I bought or downloaded as well as restored my bookmarks and memo notes.
In the end I've had no bugs/issues as others have reported. Only functionality not tested is bluetooth as I don't use it for anything.
I hope this helps and if you are walking through it all again, I would be glad to help specific questions based on my experience.
I was DL09 stock OTA at first. I'd recommend getting rooted and using Odin to get the stock DL09 from these forums flashed before you try to put DL30 on. As a developer myself, it just makes sense to always put on builds that are in order of each other. So DI01, then DL09, then DL30.

superchunkwii, thanks for the feedback. When I booted into cwm recovery mode it hung too. I think my fatal mistake was I booted in regular recovery mode and did my wipe....sad. I should have just rebooted and went back in cwm like you did.
As far as freezing apps I did not know freezing angry birds would save its data. Boy was my wife is mad (she plays it the most).
I did everything else on cue so I will try again and see how she goes. IT CAN BE TAUGHT! As the genie says.
On another note I did download the EA28 update today, can I install the DL30 Rom or do I need to "downgrade" to DL09 to get this done? Anyone try?

1. Not freeze.. that makes it so app won't run. Backup with Titanium Backup is what you need I think.
2. What is EA28? I don't think the fascinate has had that build.
Just got an update EA28 any ideas what it does

EA28 build is the update to fix the emrgency dialing bug in DL09. As I understand, it is otherwise the same as DL09. I am by no means an expert though.

It looks like a lot of brickage from the OTA... not sure what the issue is, but I just successfully updated via Odin using rhcp's .tar file. It was pretty painless, even though my phone is hardware locked (adb worked just fine).
I'm wondering if maybe Odin is the way to go? OTA always seems so chancy to me, so many things can go wrong like low battery or interrupted download. Not hearing about too much brickage going that route...
I updated thru odin only issue stop far is I dont have vibration through my phone now
my buddy got the ota this morning and it soft bricked his phone. we just reappied the update through odin and it was fine, no data lost other than the mods he applied. we did mine next and it went perfectly. we reapplied the mods and everything went smoothly. i say nandroid then odin the update.

Has anyone successfully done the OTA with stock + ROM manager + Titanium (or any combination thereof)? So far from cruising the forums seen about 5 people with similar symptoms with these 3 points in common.

Many of the OTA bricking comments mention being rooted. Maybe it's being rooted that's the common denominator?
Not for me. I was rooted, although I removed the OCLF lag fix beforehand. I flashed fine. I think it's far more likely to brick if you've flashed ROMs before.
When the Captivate OTA started bricking phones, there wasn't a single person who had played with ROMs and kernels and managed to successfully update. I get this feeling that a lot of people are doing something wrong when flashing back to stock. Either that or there is something about the Vibrant itself that makes flashing back to stock difficult or inconsistent. Regardless, I think I'm going to hold off on flashing anything else until Froyo hits. I do *not* want to have issues then.
/edit btw, I have Titanium too, so that wasn't a barrier to updating for me.

Let me reiterate. I had no custom roms flashed. Not now, not ever. I had been waiting for the OTA to drop before I started to go crazy. I did have ROM manager installed, and I've got a suspicion that Recovery installation may have prevented a clean OTA install.
Hey folks, I've read through all the JI6 OTA threads here and on the TMo forums and while I've seen a few people guess as to the cause of soft bricks, dosen't seem like anyone has nailed down the actual cause. I'm going to assume I'm not the only person out there with no access to a windows box to run ODIN so knowing what if anything can be done to prep my phone before accepting the OTA (that is sitting in my notification bar as we speak) would be immensely helpful.
So far the two best guesses I've seen are the existence of other update.zip files on SD and removal of bloatware, specifically Media Hub and possibly edited startup/shutdown screens.
Since I've got all these going on, I guess I'm staring down the barrel of a brick. But obviously one of these is easily rectified while the others, not so much.
Aside from those claiming bricks on vigin phones. Can we hear from those who have made mods to their rooted devices and either did or did not experience an OTA brick? I think this info will be helpful to many in sorting out what exactly is going on here.
I have black bar mod, I have naked swype, removed most t-mob app except media hub no change to start up or shut downtried to update. 50 % through it said update failed. Then rebooted fine. But I had an extra update.zip on my sd so maybe that's why. But no firmware now? Maybe I'm sol.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Mine wouldn't complete the update Rooted, most of the bloat removed, had an update on the sd. Was able to get into clockwork after the failed update and am performing a nandroid restore now.
this is great, thank you. beginning to look more like an issue with extra update.zip files than media hub. any successful OTA's with media hub removed prior to accepting the update?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I never uninstalled Media Hub. I have seen a correlation of about 5 people who had ROM manager installed and used that to install Recovery. Whether it be the installation of Recovery or a possible permissions issue with how it generates the update.zip that may have caused my issue.
just a question, why do people remove media hub? Does the application make the phone slow?

Because up until now, it was a non-functional app. I didn't remove it, I use LauncherPro so I just removed it from my drawer. I'm still not touching this update. I got my Vibrant used so I would be out of luck if it jacked my phone up and I hate using ODIN. Too much hassle when my phone runs great on Bionix 1.4 as it is.
Wife's phone was toasted by OTA. Stuck at Vibrant screen. Rooted, unlocked, she did have an update.zip, if that turns out to be the culprit. Also had some apps removed, replacement startup animations, and removed shutdown junk.
She was set for always-on WiFi, too.
My rooted Vibrant soft bricked yesterday and I had to flash stock with Odin. I had the (what seems to be infamous) update.zip, removed Kindle, Mobi TV, Avatar Icon, Gogo. I had RyanZAOneClickLagFixV1+ installed but removed it. I also had the EXT2 Tools installed. @ the time of the update I was @ work and had a full charge on the phone. I flashed back to stock last night after work, and I haven't recieved the update notificaiton again...maybe TMo crossed me off some type of "update list"?
There are also different possible symptoms.
In my case the update appeared to have completed its cycle, except the tail end of the download of the new update wnt really fast then the system rebooted. System came back up into the Black Vibrant screen. I could start 'adb logcat' and the system had SurfaceFlinger repeatedly crashing.
Attempts in Recovery Mode after this to reinstall files didn't resolve the issue, reboots would still lead to a crashing SurfaceFlinger.
2 separate users in a thread, 1 had removed Boot Animations + Sounds, I only had removed Sounds.
Quite a few people had Stock Roms + Root, but some with Root didn't have any issues. Only correlation was with Titanium + Rom Manager, which a lot of people would have installed since it's listed in the Tips and Tricks thread. Titanium shouldn't do anything to the system unless you generate a backup Update.zip or install LZO support busybox.
One guess is that ROM Manager and Titanium can create a update.zip file that doesn't have the proper permissions. An OTA update that attempts to overwrite this file may get confused. Simply removing the file in advance may alleviate this issue. Another issue is ROM Manager installs ROM Recovery, which may change how the OTA perceives the phone.
Bionix 1.4...
I was running Bionix 1.4 KK OC/UV yesterday morning... Was a little dumbfounded when I received the update message from Tmo. Figured it wouldn't show w/ modded handset. Delayed install until I could read everything on here about it. Tried installing over Bionix last night just to see, and had no joy. I had removed all crapware, mediahub included. Hit 50%, said flash failed, rebooted and was back to my homescreen in no time. No ill effects to phone except being denied upgrade.
So I Odined back to Stock JFD FW (and wiped device for S&G), rooted, and updated from JI6 tar posted. Flashed perfectly, no ill effects as I've noticed. Reception is improved (for me anyway), and GPS functions similar to Bionix... No real incentive for update, but was curious.
I see Bionix 1.7 updated so it was all for nothing.
Now to play with other stuff...
Cheers
My girl friends phone bricked the other night from the OTA, it's rooted(update.zip) and has the bloatware uninstalled, nothing else like lagfix/roms on it etc.
T-Moible is sending her a replacement phone, which im pretty surprised about. Now since we have to send the old phone back so they can check for damage or anything that would void the warrenty.
We get to keep the external SD card(Avatar), now im sure there is a pretty good chance they will find that its been rooted. So we would have to pay $400 they said if its voided.
Now I can't get this phone to boot into download mode or even mount it, so what should I do? I know about ODIN but have never used it, can it mount the phone?
I got the soft brick and had to flash back to stock via Odin and then I flashed the JI6 tar file from the forum. All is working fine now.
I had root but no update.zip file on the sdcard root, had removed startup an shutdown sounds, had used both ROM Manager and Titanium (with LZO compression turned on), and had removed bloatware including the non-functioning Media Hub.
Next time I'll flash back to stock before doing an OTA update.
I am rooted have Titanium backup, ROM Manager, and clockwork mod. I also had an update.zip but I think it was from OCLF not from another source. My update went fine and I'm running without any problems on the new update.

there is a cross platform tool being developed called 'Heimdall'. It is currently a command line tool and is in beta. however people are successfully flashing their phones using it. It is obviously not a 'one click' solution, so you will have to go find the proper files and type out the command.
It can be found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=755265#
If you are the type of person with access to both a windows machine and a linux machine, I suggest you check this out. Testers are needed. Of course you can test if you don't have windows, but it's nice to have Odin as a back up. ;-) just incase....

I had a failed update twice using Odin. It wasn't until I went back to stock T959JFD for the second time and deleted update.zip and all clockwork back ups that it finally worked. Runs perfect with no issues.

Was rooted with OCLF, Captive camera, gps fix, rom manager, titanium backup and add removal. Removed the OCLF and unrooted, ran the update, looked like it got to 100% (not sure cause I looked away and then back at it right before reboot) but said update failed. Got stuck at the vibrant screen blah blah. I'm pretty sure I had an update.zip on the sd, but not 100% on that. After pushing the update with ODIN I have noticed my phone lagging quite a bit.... Thoughts?

I'm a relative newbie and not very tech-oriented, and I appear to have screwed up big time. I'd appreciate any help that can be offered. To cut to the chase, when I attempt to boot up my Fascinate, it gets stuck indefinitely on the Samsung logo.
Here's what I did to screw it up. I rooted my phone when I first got it last year and did a lagfix. It unrooted with the update to JD05. Yesterday I attempted to root it again using two different 1-click methods, neither of which worked. I then followed the instructions in the "Modified CWMrecovery for Odin" thread, not having it work until finally succeeding in getting root using CWM Red. The phone rebooted and was rooted, and everything seemed fine, so I used Rom Manager to Boot to Recovery. This did something strange--it took 15 minutes to get to the recovery screen, with a digital voice periodically telling me how much longer it would take. When I got to the recovery screen the first thing I did was to perform a backup. I think this effort to be safe did me in, because the phone must have already been screwed up then and I think I backed up the screw-up.
I then attempted to reboot and since then all efforts get me stuck on the Samsung logo. I've tried almost all options from the Recovery screen: reboot system now, apply sdcard update.zip, wipe date/factory reset, wipe cache partition, install zip from ascard, and restore. All bring the same locked up phone.
I'd appreciate any ideas to bring my Fascinate back to life!
First off the only way to get to red CWM is to install a voodoo 5 kernel. I'm thinking the voodoo kernel and the one click lag fix don't play well together. I'm sure someone else will step in with more info however I would start by looking for a thred called how to completely remove voodoo. Then try odin to restore. Good luck.
Edit. I read your post again and not sure if u did one click lag fix or just an older voodoo kernel. Either way same result u have to disable voodoo 4 and one click to install voodoo 5. Odin it. The voice u hear was the voodoo kernel converting your system to ext4 if this was the first time you've heard this I think your first lag fix may have been the one click.

Yes this happed to me too. If i take it to the Verizon store will they know my phone is rooted and moded? i need help ASAP
Search the forums on how to properly removed the voodoo lag fix. Then you need to reflash dj05. Voodoo doesn't really do much except for show you a higher quadrant score and limit to what roms/themes you can install. Same thing happened to me. Just do a quick search, I think its in the development section. The easiest way to remove it is with and. Hope this is somewhat helpful.
so fresh and so superclean.
Don't bring it to verizon because you would be defrauding them for your mistake. see if you can access your sd card through the computer and put either a file or folder in the voodoo folder called disable_lagfix and try booting again. If that doesn't help (it is probably too late for that) then you need to flash back to stock through odin. find the thread in development on how to do that. Good luck. Your phone is not broken. Breathe.

Hey folks, I'm hoping one of you can help me out with an issue that just cropped up on my phone. I've been running EB01 since it's release and have had no issues whatsoever except for today when I noticed my apps (Titananium Backup, Tapatalk, Root Explorer) we're remembering preferences anymore and/or every time I exit from them and launch again....it thinks it's the first run again.
Did something hose up my permissions/ownerships? Only think I did recently was flash the de-binged browser via CWM.
Any ideas??
What are you running? It may be a permissions problem. Have you tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it?
I'm having a similar issue. Help!

I was just about to start a thread about this. I'm having the same problem. I upgraded from blackhole 4.1 (DL30) to Superclean 2.2 EB01 with voodoo lagfix. I got the red CWM flashed via odin and proceeded to install the EB01 modem and the superclean 2.2v (EB01).
The first time I flashed was a disaster, there were issues with Odin completing the flash, so I had to do USB pulls about 4 times (which ended up giving me full "light blue" screens during download mode at times).
After getting Odin to cooperate, I was able to flash the Superclean 2.2v (EB01), and then I restored everything from Titanium Backup, which worked fine until I restarted the phone or left it alone for a couple of hours. Everything would force close (like ADWLauncer Ex, forcing me to use ONLY TWLauncher) and all my preferences were lost. Like gmail would have to resync as if it were new, all the EULA dialogs would come up (like in android market), my trillian profiles were all lost, if i turned off haptic feedback that would turn back on, my ringtones would go back to the defaults, etc.
So I read some other thread in the Development section which said to reflash, and do not do any restores at all. So I reflashed with Super clean 2.3v (EB01), but it happened again, all my preferences would be lost. I also tried to do "fix permissions" from RED CWM, but it just ran for like a fraction of a second and didn't seem like it did anything, as the problem persisted.
I'm planning to go back to DL30 or even DL09 to see if my phone functioned properly or not.
If anyone has a solution to this problem please help!

I'm thinking it has something to do with flashing either the De-Binged browser or the new market update. Maybe something in the framework-res is getting hosed up?
I just did a wipe and reflashed plain old EB01 and I'm not going to flash any changes and see if the problem comes up again.

I'm having the exact same problem. I've been all the way down to DJ05 to see what happens, and when I come back to superclean 2.2 voodoo-ed, I get force closes on everything the first time I restart - that issue was due to the new feature froyo added "automatic restore" in settings > privacy. I got that taken care of by uninstalling all apps.
However, when I restart now, my entire phone defaults back to cleared data. I'm talking every setting that I could think of (usb debugging, sound, brightness, contacts, security pin cleared). I don't get it at all. Everything else has been working right though.
Just thought I would share - I'm kinda still in limbo till I figure out what I should do.

I wonder if it has to do with the type of EB01 we're using or the CWM. I flashed CWM red via Odin, rather than updating via Rom Manager or update.zip. Also I used the EB01 Walkthrough in the fascinate developers section, the link is:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=948722
***UPDATE***
I resolved the problem... I think. I noticed there was a difference in the file names of the EB01 Modem in the walkthrough link I provided on the last line of the paragraph above and the EB01 Modem given in the original EB01 stock thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=948679). I flashed with the eb01a_modem.tar given in the stock thread and then upgraded to Super Clean with Voodoo (v. 2.4 as of this writing). The market DID restore all the apps, before I was able to stop it, but after I restarted, there were no force closes nor were there any loss of preferences. I hope the modem issue was what was wrong...
Started doing it again this morning. This time I did not flash any mode via ROM Manager. Only things I did was de-bloat using Root Explorer and Titanium Backup.
Not every app started forgetting preferences, some still reemebered. Any of the devs have an idea of what's going on here? I'm running the plain old, fully-bloated EB01 ROM. No voodoo, no de-odexed, or anything like that.
I think it's a dbdata partition issue. I can't say how to fix because it's above my paygrade, but you may have to wait until it is officially released.

Try the Odin back to stock...DI01, wipe everything. Reroot and and get cwm. Then ODIN EB01 Modem Tar followed by super clean 2.4 install through cwm. Be sure to wipe data and cache before flashing super clean.
I there a reason I have to go all the way back to DI01, or can I use any All-In-One Odin package that writes the ROM, Kernel, & Radio?

I suggest that typically before anything else b/c it seems to help most. I've never experienced these issues but many suggest this is a viable method to remedy certain problems. Don't see why you couldn't try the odin DL09 all-in-one and wipe the hell out of it and try again. Good Luck.
Is the corruption in the dbdata partition caused by an older version of CWM or a problem in the EB01 ROM itself?
Is it safe to go back to EB01?

I believe it's currently inconclusive. There is speculation about exactly what causes it hence the reason I suggest wiping everything and then flashing the most recently provided stuff. That way it'll narrow things down. Someone can correct me, but if you odin back to stock, I'm 99% sure super cleans 2.4 voodoo kernel includes the new cmw. I was on green cmw unitl I flashed the seperate voodoo kernel posted by jt. I haven't had any issues.
Its almost certainly dbdata corruption. The cause is...yeah questionable. Seems most common with voodoo with the current hack being used to get it working with froyo.

I've never run Voodoo on my phone, but I did my initial install of EB01 with one of the older "Green" CWM versions.

Any other suggestions or fixes?
I went all the way back to DI01, then flashed to EB01 using an Odin All-In-One and now 48-72 hours later, my apps (most notably Tapatalk, Root Explorer, and Titanium Backup) think it's the first time they've run every time I launch it.
Shouldn't have going back to DI01 fixed the corruption since it reformats the ROM partition? Also, something I notice was that flashing to DI01 or EB01 using odin did not get rid of the new CWM Recovery.
Would running the permission fix correct the issue?

No...are you running voodoo? And what rom are you using?
EB01 Fully Bloated, Non-Voodoo Kernel
Baseband version: S:i500.04.V.EB01
Kernel version: 2.6.32.9
Build number: SCH-I500.EB01

Try This...
This will hopefully repartition and clean dbdata corruption. BTW, I couldn't get 2.2 to run on my phone until I odin flashed a ROM which allowed me to then flash Adrynalyne's 2.4.
DI01, DJ05, DL09 did not work for the fix. Eclair worked fine, but Froyo would not work until I flashed a 2.2 odin.
Do I need to check the "Re-Partition" option in Odin when flashing or does it do it automatically?
I noticed lately that when I switch phones and activate back to the epic, that I have to odin back to di18 in order for the data connection to come back up. After the flash and reboot, I have to quickly switch to wifi or the auto update of ec05 will bogart the data connection too much.
It seems that prl and profile updates don't work in di18 (anymore) and never did work in ec05. If I activate the epic, updating the profile and prl are steps that I take to get the phone properly provisioned and activated and since they don't work anymore, it really makes things a pain to accomplish. The new flashes for stock ec05 and the root/cwm 25xx are good and I dl'd them but haven't used them yet.
I thought about steps to shorten this procedure by odin di18 then one click 2.5.5 then nandroid the fresh rooted install. I did the same for ec05 from a stock di18, then let the updater do its business then reboot and one click then nandroid. Another problem is I can't seem to go from one to the other with restore, even with clearing data and factory reset and clear dalvik. I always get stuck in a reboot loop into the stock recovery. Another pain.
I know one answer to all this would be to stop switching phones, but why? I had a similar answer with one of the customer service boobs when I had problems activating a phone myself. He said most people don't have multiple phones and switch between them often. That may be a legit answer but I still think it is bs. I won't get into a rant about that...
My last wondering thought is, once I get either di18 or ec05 up, rooted and cwm with 25xx, do you see any problems with using rom manager to update cwm to the 3xxx versions? I'm asking this because most of the posts I've read concerning 3xxx, have to do with changing the filesystem to ext4. I didn't know if those are tied together or not. I tried going that route and didn't have any luck so I went back to rfs.
Can anyone shed some light on this?
Clockwork Mod 3.x.x is only for EXT4 file systems. No matter what CWM3 looks for EXT4 at first recovery boot, if not there it will start the conversion process. So if u want CWM3 you have to deal with EXT4.
Ah ok. Thanks
