As someone who came from a Nexus One, I prefer to flash on the go. I usually take a Zip I have on my phone with ua_redbend in it, edit the update script on the go and drop the appropriate Modem.bin or zImage into it. But for those who haven't done this on the go, all you'll have to do is unpack the tar file most people upload, drop it in the respective ZIP file below using an appropriate program on your phone (unrar, astrozip, astro file manager for a few) and use Clockwork to flash on the go...
Of course, I am not liable for any misflashing that may occur, I just thought that this would help out on the go...
The folder to drop your respective file into will be the kernel_update folder.
Enjoy guys! And flash on the go Go GO!
Edit: Works as well with Infuse. It saved my Bacon when making my 1.0 Infusion so that I could reupload it quickly.
I just download the files to my computer that are flashable with clock and copy them all onto my sd and flash while i drive lol

That works too. I just thought that everyone would love to have these.... I love being able to flash anything anytime without sitting down at my computer.
Thanks bedwa, ive been looking for a method like this! All I ever really have to use my ext. Sd for is priority files and a handful of things for post-flash care such as my ever-so-loved launcher 2 apk, setiron's kernel, and a few others so when I help someone flash I put my sd in there phone and install the basics.
So I just drop zimage in w/ no edit?
I appreciate it. Thanks.

Flash a z4 kernel and you are kind of stuffed lol. Well it's more of a nandroid and ROMs on the internal SD on my side of the world.

Download the respective zip and drop it in the "kernel_update" folder in the zip. No other work needed..... I just wanted to make it quicker for others to do this on the go....
so is there a way for this method to restore my captivate back to JF6? i'm on a mac and don't have access to windows all the time, so one click back to JF6 isn't a common option for me
Thats a bit trickier.... I would assume that you could redbend the whole thing, but you would need ALL the partitions and all the proper locations. Though it may be easier with hiemdal.....

Idk about JF6 but I've been using the stock OTA UCJH7 as my jump-off for flashing ROMs. I always do it through CWR and (as long as I remember to disable lagfixes) I've never had a problem.
Made my phone a damn good brick by forgetting to disable the lagfix and trying to flash back to stock, but as long as you're not as dumb as me you shouldn't have a problem.
When I first got the phone I spent hours trying to get my computer to recognize it in download mode before eventually coming to the conclusion that I was having hardware problems in my USB ports. I've only ever used Odin to go to stock *once* and I did it on a friend's laptop. So, figure that you and I have about the same access to Odin. I feel pretty confident with this on-the-go method of returning to stock and flashing.
Edit:
Also, now that I think about it, you can probably find a stock JF6 update.zip to be used with CWR. You may even find it somewhere linked to that thread that I posted.
This seems very interesting.
I came from the HTC Legend background and i was always flashing on the go then. I bricked the Cappy when i tried flashing on the go (as i was so used to on the legend).
However, looking at your files, i really have NO IDEA how to use this.
Could you post a step by step guide as to how to use this?
Would be great if you could dummy proof this so users like me won't mis-flash.
At the moment, i'm looking at your files, and i have no idea what order of flashing should another custom rom be.
However, i can only assume that these files are flashed BEFORE the custom ROM?
As in -> recovery -> Kernel & modem -> Custom Rom.
In this order?
These aren't flashable update.zips they're just guts to insert into a pre-made update.zip.
As far as on-the-go flashing with a Captivate... it's the only way to fly ;D
Still confused on how to use this
so the kernel is the zimage file in the update folder, is that correct? and the modem is the modem.bin? those are the files I would need to replace

I think I've got it. So i drop the zimage inside the kernel_update folder and leave the redband thing?
I would very much like to try this but am a bit confuzzled Can I download and flash or do I have to do some adding and things. I"m under the impression that I have to mod some more after I download these... would be quite nice to have these w/ the stock zimage or whatever already in the zip...that's just me..mostly because I'm at work and would really like to reflash a rom right now.
Someone please post a step-by-step guide to using this please...
Am confused and without help right now...
Thanks
i agree a step by step would be great
+1 for a step by step!!!
EDIT: This will also work if you are trying to update to EC05.
For those of you that are having issues with updating to EB13 because of one click root deleting the Asphalt Demo, I have found a solution. I had the same problem. When trying to update via CWM I would get an error message saying the Asphalt demo was missing from the system apps folder.
To get around this, you'll need root access the preloaded asphalt demo, and root explorer.
1) Download the asphalt demo pulled from the stock D18 rom.
http://www.fileserve.com/file/WSta8et
2) Place the file onto your sd card.
3) open root explorer, press the "Mount R/W"
4) find the asphalt file, long press and hit copy.
5) use the back key and find the system folder.
6) within the system folder, find the app folder.
7) once inside the app folder, press the paste button.
8) reboot into CWM
9) now retry updating with your update.zip via clockworkmod and enjoy froyo!
Note: Updating does remove OneClickRoot so you will need to reinstall after updating. Hope this helps everyone!
If you get errors regarding the playlogo while trying to update in cwm, reboot and remove the oneclickroot after all these steps. here is the uninstaller noobnl and firon provided: http://firon.net/xda/one.click.stock.flasher.&.root.uninstaller-di18.zip

Did you not read the OP? Come on! I mean, I can somewhat understand not searching the forums, but to post in a thread about fixing the problem you're having and you don't even read the original post? Now I'm starting to see why some of the old-timers and regulars around here are so reluctant to help people: cuz people want everything handed to them on a silver platter, without trying to figure **** out themselves.
Why don't you go back and read the OP, killer.

hey i tried this method an it still not letting me upgrade to froyo. i have the stock eclair an its rooted an i don't have clockwork i have the original samsung boot screen an im using drop box to get the update.zip to my sd card my computer cant find my phone but i have the file in my sd card first it was complaining about the asphalt demo now its telling me sd card problem abort 7 something like that whats next
Anyone get the ota update after installing asphalt?

Or you could just take the commands that remove asphalt out of the the run.bat in the oneclickroot. Here's the file I used, the only change is that the two game apks that it removed are now left in place. Just unzip the file over top of the run.bat in the original one click. Hope it helps.
I never bothered to look before I rooted, but did EB13 come with Asphalt again? I figured it was replaced with the "Play HD games" one.

It doesn't sound like you used the one click root method, as you need a computer to do this. Do you remember how you rooted? What exact error are you receiving when updating the zip file?

So this method would revert all changes from the one click root and reinstall the asphalt demo to the system apps folder? If so, that's awesome!

No it wont reinstall them but if you odin to DI18 and then use the run.bat i posted instead of the one that comes with the one click root then it will not remove them.

Just realized in the my files application that i still have the gameloft folder with a folder inside named games and another inside of that named asphalt5 inside of that there are many files with the name of raw and numbers following them along with a few other files.
You may be able to push the file to the system app folder through your computer and adb, but I'm not sure how to do that. Maybe someone with more experience can help.
Unless there is another app that allows you to paste files into the system folder for free. I only know of root explorer that does this.
Even though you have the folder on your sd card, you still still need the actual apk within the system app folder. I tried downloading the demo and that won't work.
I'm running EB01 2.6 sc. Have been trying to add shut down animation but my phone won't let me modify system folder. I've flashed back to stock and used a different method for root access and tried several different file managers. Whenever I try to make a change, it tells me the folder was created successfully or the move was successful but no changes actually happen. Does anyone have any ideas?

It worked!!! Thanks a ton.......such a weird problem...why would only that particular file manager work???
Then again........maybe it's not entirely fixed. I'm now allowed to add system folders. I wasn't before. But I don't see a "move" option anywhere, to move shutdown.ogg (or whatever I'm trying to move) I only see Copy and Cut. When I choose one of those, it says "Prepare to Copy" (or Cut), but never actually does so.
Just rename the original to shutdown.ogg.old or oldshutdown.ogg . I remember that it says preparing to copy and it actually will copy the file/folder so all you have to do is navigate to the right folder and hit the clipboard icon to paste.

I have been reading about how people (including myself) are having issues mounting the SD card with CWM Recovery 6.x.xx and I was wondering where (if it exists) I can find an earlier version for my Nexus 4. The problem I am having is when my phone is connected to my computer, I cant find the Clockwork Mod file to remove the backup from the device. I have the 8GB N4, so I really want to remove it, put it somewhere safe and not have it take up precious space.
If anyone has any thoughts or other solutions, please let me know. I am also having the same issue with TWRP2 (cant mount while in recovery).

I have Root Explorer and can't find the folder on my /sdcard. If I could, I could take the backup and move it, but it doesn't seem to be visible.
I have been thinking, do I need to be rooted to be able to access the folder, or see it for that matter?
And as a side note, I tried TWRP2 and I can see the folder with backups made.

I had this same issue as I'm using CWM 6.0.2.0. For whatever reason, they changed the saved backups location to /data/media/clockworkmod now so you can't access it by plugging in your phone because the backups aren't on the sdcard. That's also the reason you can't find it. To my knowledge, you can do two things to get them to your computer:
1. Use ADB to pull the clockworkmod folder to your computer. I still haven't completely figured out how to do that yet as I don't screw around in ADB shell too much and I'm not sure if you have to mount the filesystem before doing it. I'm sure if you search around, you could find the ADB solution.
2. (This solution sucks but it works...) If you have a file manager (like X-plore) and root access, you can copy the contents of /data/media/clockworkmod folder to the sdcard location on your phone. Once it's there, THEN you can access that copy when it's plugged into your computer. Then just get rid of the .nomedia file in the folder and move it from your sdcard to your PC. Simple but takes forever for the files to copy depending on how many backups your moving and how big your blobs folder is.
If someone knows a better way, I'm definitely all ears. Really don't like how they changed CWM to this new style. Makes it a pain to offload backups from your phone to your PC.

Didn't even know you could do that. I always just boot to CWM, never use the ROM manager app. That sounds like a paid feature or is it on the free version?
Edit: Yeah, it's a paid feature but I'm seriously considering going this route since it's so damn handy. If I can't figure out how to ADB it, I may just buy the premium version. Thanks bro.

Thanks for all the great tips/answers/comments. I will see what I can do in terms of finding where the backup is stored on my phone now (since it seems there could be two places).
Cheers!!
Hatzy, you can pull the backups using insecure adbd by chainfire [app]. Otherwise, you can only pull sdcard. Or, i believe you can pull via the path /mnt/shell/emulated..
So, after doing some looking... I thiink my best bet is to use Rom Manager's new Download Server feature. I'll give it a try and let everyone know how it works out!!
Ok so I used superoneclick to root my ladies u8800-51. Wow simple as ever coming from HTC let me say. Going to install the CWM recovery.img to it, screen was purple/Red. I accidentally renamed the folder that was there instead of just the original recovery image. So questions... What was the folders original name? now no recovery is coming up just a blue screen.. HElp me get her phone going again so i can flash some ROMS
The recovery.img is in .cust_backup\image at least in my u8800

You had overwrite file recovery.img, no rename the folder. You are weird, no Huawei.
Now you have bricked phone.
You can try connect phone in bluescreen to pc, maybe you can see partitions.
If your phone is still visible as usb mass storage, rename the folder to "image". There will be only one folder in that partition.

You just haven't the recovery mode(for this the blue image). This doesn't mean that the phone isn't rooted. There are 2 separate things. You can use a file explorer with root option(e.g ES file explorer), to go the the "image" folder in which are all the system images(recovery.img, boot.img etc). The path is /.cust_backup/image and in this folder you will find the recovery.img. Probably this image haven't a different name or extension. It must be recovery.img, otherwise the system doesn't recognize it. To make changes in this folder you must previously mount it as Read/Write(is Read only by default). For this you can use Remount application(you can find it on google play), and then you can from ES file explorer(or any other root file manager) to rename the file or replace and whatever you want.
This is one from several ways. You can also boot again in pink screen mode and do these changes(without the need of remounting) from pc file explorer. You can also do something similar as the first way from pc via adb.

Just hold +/- plus power buttons when the phone is off
Connect to computer and drag recovery.img to the folder
if it asks, overwrite.
