[Q] Multiple Slide MMS - HD2 Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting an

Over the week and a half that we've had WP7 on our HD2s, we've discovered a lot a new features and lot of lacking features. I have searched the threads for a couple of days and MMS issues haven't been mentioned.
I was wondering if anyone has discovered a way of sending a multiple image MMS or slideshow via MMS.

To this date Im wondering the same thing.

the lacking features were the only contributing factor that made me switch back to android!
not being able to MMS video (highly disappointed as of 7720), no flash support (discontinued dev), poor battery life (yes i know this HD2 driver related and will never be fixed), and finally heating issues (while charging under heavy wifi use).
these were the deal breakers for me anyway. with an OS that has soooo many pros (dont get me wrong ... i rocked WP7 from the release of 7004 - BTTF 7720 and LOVED IT!!!) i had to keep my precious Leo running. it was really the heating that caused me to switch!
buuuuut to answer the question ... as of 7720 NO it wasnt possible ... unless 7740 has changed that.

Unfortunately still no video sharing through mms. Very disappointing considering it's nearly 2012. Other than that & not being able to watch many videos online, this is the perfect os.

perfect is a vast understatement IMO! i just dont understand why it lacks so many essential functions that are commonplace in every other platform! M$ keeps inching toward the goal, yet MUCH to slowly.
$0.99 handsets??? thats insane ... i fear WP7 is soon to be comletely abandoned if M$ cant take a huge leap ... and SOON!!!

[Question] Is HTC HD2 Worth it?

I'm pretty much looking for a long term phone, looking forward to watching movies, playing games, surfing the net, etc. I've used Xperia X1 (was great for a while, but little to no official support), the iPhone 3g (quick, way less laggier than the X1, great for mindless games to kill time)
Guess what I am asking is, is HTC HD2 worth the buck? $500 SGD (About uhm 250 Euros) for the phone (incl 2-year plan)
As you can see from my signature I've had a LOT of phones in my time, but never been very happy with one for very long.
Finally , at least for me, the HD2 will be something I'm going to own a very long time to come. It really does everything you could want in a phone/media player/comms/office/game device...all be it with a good bit of the expected modding and tweaking that comes with WinMo And if you can get it as cheap as €250 then I wouldn't think twice, go for it.
But remember my analogy for having a HD2/Leo. It's like having a child.
You have the painful labour pains of paying for it (€700 in most places). The joy of holding it for the first time (unboxing it)
Then like a child, you need to teach it how to work properly (modding and reg editing). Also like a growing child, you need to put up with it's little annoyances now and then (the odd bugs that need fixing). After that, you need to teach it to be interesting, (add apps, themes etc) Basically if you're willing to put in the work it's going to be worth every penny/cent
Thanks for the quick response! Appreciated! Yup, one thing I love about WinMo devices is the huge community(Actually the HTC Community) which allows me to pretty much customize the phone Another question, is there any major bugs/flaws that I might be concerned about? Because I've wanted this phone ever since the rumours surfaced and the hype made all the more irresistable lol
Yes, the HD2 is worth every penny!
There are a few flaws out of the box yes. Some have speaker issues, screen over/under sensitive, pinkeye camera, and a few more, all of which can be fixed with some reg edits and a few cab files. You can find all the fixes and tweaks Here.
The only as yet unfixed problem is the SMS issue. Some people (not me) who have over 200 or so SMSs (why don't people use the delete button?) notice a slow down when replying. But who uses SMS anymore in this modern age of emails, twitters, Google wave, Facebook and what not Anyways for the SMS issue I think there is a workaround until HTC come up with a patch.

700 euros in most places??.. no way
But to stay on topic.. imagine when it is summer.. how will you carry your Leo with you?.. so I find that a better case in the package would have been absolutely no luxury!
Then you have the software flaws.. device.exe sometimes crashes the phone totally.. the htcmessage performance.. the camera... seems to me that Leo had to be released..
seems to me like a business decision.. release it now albeit with software flaws and fix them later.. it turned out to be not a bad decision
but.. if you use Leo with navigon (my preferred navigation software) then you will be in for a real treat.. the same if you use it to browse websites.. so as always it depends
on your usage..
Like Jagnet, I've owned a rather odd collection of phones in my life. I've never been keen on Smartphones as I was rather disappointed by them during my little spree of owning them during 2003/04 and was put off since. I went as far as considering "a phone is just a phone, nothing else" and swore by living in the dark ages by avoiding Smartphones (even though I was working as a promoter and technical adviser for Windows Mobile back in 2003/04 >.<).
The HD2 was something that caught my eye earlier this year and is the first phone that I've waited patiently for, it certainly was worth the wait! Apart from the odd niggles you get from the phone such as the SMS bug and the odd lag, the phone works great (lets be honest here, there are always minor niggles with any phone you get, even my Nokia 8800 Arte, retailing at £1100 at the time I got mine had awful bugs which took over 8 months to fix and there are still bugs that remain).
Much fun can be had with the HD2, the great community behind it (you are looking at it now ) and modding. I've spent endless hours customising it to meet my needs. After a few weeks of playing about with registry / system files and hard resetting, I've now got a phone that does everything I want, customed to how I like and works flawlessly...
apart from the bluetooth compatibility issues...
and the battery life incomparable to non-smartphones (however, the HD2 does very well compared to most smartphones on the market)...
and the marketplace which is in need of some love...
and having to change my handset due to a dodgy touchscreen within the first 4 days.
On the games front, you will be disappointed when comparing it to the iPhone but there are a few good games around. On the apps front, if you ignore the Windows Marketplace and Google around, there are plenty of places to buy good apps from. It's just the iPhone has a good app store that consolidates all apps into a nifty marketplace for you to browse.
Windows Mobile needs you to put the effort in ownership, but in many ways, I see it as a good thing. You get the flexibility to do what you want, on phones such as the iPhone, you are controlled to what you can or cannot do unless you "jailbreak". The iPhone is user friendly, everything is setup for you and for those looking to get a phone that does everything the minute you take it out of the box, it is a product for you. The HD2 fairs well with HTC Sense and it's a good starting point for HTC and Windows Mobile, there is still the horrid Windows Mobile 2003 look lurking in the background though.
Thanks for the replies fellas, appreciate it I am getting my HTC HD2 in a couple of hours, and I hope I won't be disappointed I'm pretty much looking forward to unboxing my 'child' (like how jagnet put it Most of all, I'm looking forward to WM7, though from what I've read it might take a while, but as long as it is worth the wait, I'm cool with it...
It really is like a new baby, because you will breast feed it every 2 hours.
Hi Ive had my HD2 for a few days and to be honest its been a difficult transition form my iphone 3GS which was very simple and easy to use but the 3gs is very basic and doesn't allow for real working integrations.
Its been buggy, very slow compared to the 3gs, the keyboad for some weird reason is of center which is a nightmare to type on compare to the 3gs.
The phone isnt as simple to use as the iphone but for some weird reason i still want it and still want to get use to its quirks.
I have another 10 days left to see if i am going to commit to an 18 month contract, just wish i new what the new iphone was going to be like when released in june.
Its like anything personal choice your will either love it, grow to love it (as hopefully i will) or hate it.
Good luck
Worth it?
If you owned an xperia then you have something to go on.
Leo is WM but with the HTC hardware & shell.
I used to own a Ducati.
My experience was, it was sensational to ride, no other bike comes close, but it had to be kept in tune and maintained. Riding it in the traffic to work would put it out of whack and it would need a nice long blat on a country road to make it right again. High performance and superlative handling made it a unique experience.
Where am I going with this?
Oh yes, performance and usability.
Clearly this is the fastest and highest performing pda phone you can get.
This, and the sense ui make it a great experience.
It is not such a good analogy as heavy usage doesn't put it out of tune so much as excessive poor quality 3rd party apps and too many untested mods.
This is partly why the though of an iphone full of crapstore junk turns my stomach, because if it could multiask, it would choke on the garbage it was running.
Sense iu means I can access what I need in a minimun of steps, but with wm6.5 underneath, I can reach down and tune it to do what I want.
Contrary to my analogy, the stock rom on Leo is pretty good, with a few fixes needed, nothing as serious as having to take it back to the store.
As a stock phone it is great, but it can be modified(tuned) to push the performance envelope and make it even more usable.
As a Ducati rider, I found it very hard to step down to anything else, and as a Leo user I'm the same.
The promise of simplicity makes me cringe as it translates to settling for mediocrity.
Mobile phone hand held computers were pioneered by HTC.
This is the latest evolution.
I love the Leo.
@Xaddict; Well said, I just got my HD2 and I'm loving it so far, knowing this community, I am looking forward to the the custom roms/apps that will be available to everyone soon (I hope) And regarding Ducatis, love em, especially the 948

Um, firstly there are NO current fixes for the loud call volume or call distortion problems. None whatsoever.
Neither are there any fixes for the over-sensitive keyboard. Yes there is a CAB floating around and it helps to a very small degree with text input but it also makes the screen less sensitive in EVERY app and every screen. This isn't helpful.
Secondly, SMS is still the most popular form of mobile communication....by a country mile....so to try and cover up the fact that the HD2 is severely crippled in this area is laughable!
We need some balance here folks. Yes the HD2 is fantastic for web browsing and video but it is shocking for calls and texts - the mainstay features of a mobile phone. Hopefully HTC will address these problems but it is in no way guaranteed that they will!

Well, no phone is perfect. But IMO, the HD2 is THE device that comes closest to being perfect.
It has some small bugs that will get fixed soon or can be fixed manually, there's different opinions on the keyboard and call quality (some say it's the best ever, some hate it) and Windows Mobile, just like any other OS (iPhone OS, Android, Symbian...) has its flaws as well.
But compared to the problems/shortcomings of other devices, the HD2 has very little issues, great hardware, great software - the closest you can currently get to perfect, IMO.
So yes, it's worth it.
Oh, and don't take sunking101 serious. He's a troll and a whiner, spreading FUD against the HD2 since the first day he entered the forum.
definitely (but i don't have the sms problem and i can charge my phone at work)....

Gosh, I actually thought you were making a sane and rational post until I got to the last sentence.
The OP is asking the pros and cons of purchasing an HD2. Therefore all pros and cons are relevant.
As for the HD2 being "the closest you can currently get to perfect" - that is your opinion. Not fact.

And so is all your whining.
On topic: yes, the HD2 is worth every sigle dime. And yes, it has some shortcomings (which phone doesn't these days with the speed they are propelled into the market). The only problem I have with the HD2 is the speaker volume which is too loud. But, I have to admit that, it got much better after upgrading to the 1.48 ROM.
Off topic: Maybe it's best not to reply anymore to the contributions member sunking101 delivers to this community. Saves a lot of time and yes/no discussions.
It's well worth the price .

The Desire of HD2

Hiya - I am finally ok to upgrade with T-Mob! I been wanting the HD2 for a while, but now they are releasing the Desire (early April according to the latest info from T-Mob). Please tell me guys, should I wait for the Desire?
- Part of me loves WM part of me hates. Like when you want to make a call - it wont, or finish a call - theres always a few second delay or it doesnt want to stop!
I tried the HD2 in the T-Mob store, it looks great, love the keyboard etc... but it froze couple times. Is this really normal?
- I like the idea of Android.. but wonder if it still has teething probs...
All of you who had the HD2 plesae give your honest opinon... is it worth to take the plunge for the next 18 months or so?
cheers!!!
Go for the Desire... I have the HD2 and i don't regret buying it really... A very nice phone with great hardware etc... The problem is the software.. HTC, and its Sense, has done a very good job making the OS look pretty... And it is, no doubt about that.. The problem is this: Stability.... Every once in a while the phone crashes, becomes slow etc. and requires me to reset it, even pull the battery when its total chaos ... It's not THAT bad, but it pisses me off frankly
The good thing about WM is the ability to customize it.. The funny thing is that it's pretty much a requirement to do so, to make the phone's software act decent...
The desire has a smaller screen, but also a more comfortable form factor.. But, as i said, it all comes down to software and longsighted view... Android is a platform of the future, and even right now it has taken big steps towards mobile OS domination.. It's fast, stabile and good looking.. What more can you ask for?
but than again.. android also crashes... (I know cause my cousin told me..)
I've got the HD2.. and I'm very pleased with it.. and yes it anoys me when it crashes.. but this only happens with custom roms and not with the stock rom.
My opinon is that your choice shouldn't just be software related but it has to be the whole thing..
And the phone is good enough to survive the comming 2 years...
(especialy if we get an update to wm7 but its not confirmed yet. we'll hear that next month.)
To me me the HD2 is the best phone ever and curently there is no phone that is able to replace it!!!
yesterday I was holding my uncles touch pro 2 and was so slow to me..
I own a HD2 and love it, very very few crashes and the latest ROM from HTC fixes most problems people had at the beginning. I've got a friend who owns a Hero (Android + Sense) and complains all the time because of crashes and bad network signal and so on.
The Nexus One received a lot of bad press because of poor 3G signals but hopefully HTC have patched that so it shouldn't be an issue on the Desire.
Also, if WM7 is as closed as some make it out to be then I personally will be getting an Android next purchase. I had a G1 with some of the first iterations of Andriod and franky they were crap, but it has had some massive improvments since then and is looking very slick and has a great future ahead. I have not used any of the 2.0 versions but they have slowly been tempting me away from my HD2 and WM, the only thing holding me back is a spare pile of cash.
It all comes down to personal opinion and how much you want to do with it and if you want to tweak it. If you are more of a fiddly type and love messing with settings and stuff then get the HD2, if you just want to use it out of the box without doing anything to it then go with the Desire.
For me HD2 is my first WM phone and honestly I have no idea why are people slagging it so much. I have absolutelly no problems making phone calls, texting or doing anything else with my phone. It's been 2 months since I got and it crashed once and that was because of me installing some dodgy app. I think people moaning all the time just dont know how to use it properly. Its the same with Windows XP, Vista etc. Some of my pals restore their systems every few weeks while I've had my last XP instalation running for year and a half and it was still all right just a bit slow to boot up.
In conclusion - if you know what you doing there is nothing wrong with WM. If you want more idiotproof os go for android or iphone.
If the T-Mobile ROM is stable, then I would say get the HD2 with the bigger screen. I have the T9193 version and when it works, it is great. I have to do a lot more tweaking on it to get it to work the way I want it. The data connection constantly drops or is off even when I have full bars with the H logo. Youtube app doesn't work on mine, I have read there is a fix where I have to edit the registry to remove the cingular settings.
I want to try Android myself, I will ge the X10 when AT&T releases it.
I;ve own the HD2 for a month now with dutty's HG v0.9 ROM / 2.08 radio. and i dont know what crashes you guys are talking about. mines is completely stable.
buy the desire android gets ubdates more than windows mobile
HD2 is the best phone I have ever used. I have had it 3 weeks, not a single crash. I am still on the 1.48 ROM, had the sms sending issue, applied the htc patch, all working. everything works on my phone. Apart from sms everything worked out the box. I have applied all the tweak and improvements from Xda, made it that much better. Go with the HD2, you won't be sorry.

Yes, because it is a much younger platform that needs those updates. WM 6.5 is already quite stable and doesn't need all those updates.
Unless you are talking about GMaps, GGoggles etc. Because all those great free services that Google are offering are very temping.
I too own Hd2 and I dont really know wheter I totaly love it, or I hate it.
It is totaly fast compared to older devices. Winmo is great cuz it can be customizable. Winmo is stable base for app. I dont use HTC slowdown programs and It's quite satysfing.
On the other hand, winmo is quite slow and ugly. You have to customize, if you want decent device. Android is really looking great. Winmo 7 (windows phone 7 series) is total crap, full of LOOOOONG pointless animations, and no functionality (and ugly too). So there is no future. And android's future is quite bright, look at all these new and nice games for it.
Thats how it is. I love my HD2, but I'm really curious about android. So both ways are great choose if you ask me =)
Thanks
Thanks for your opinions/experience guys! Its going to be a tricky decision.. I normally go for the 18 month contract so hope I do the right thing. Never used android before, but it looks great, but then Im waiting now T-Mob to make me an offer I cant refuse...
In any case, you will have to wait until the end of March. By then, it will likely be clear whether the HD2 gets an upgrade to WP7 or not.
If the HD2 doesn't get an upgrade to WP7, then I'd say get the Desire. Windows Mobile 6.5 is dead (not yet, but soon). The Desire will at least get updates to future Android versions.
Right now, there are things that Windows Mobile does better, and there are things that Android does better. The quality of the applications on Android is certainly better than what you can find for Windows Mobile (there are about 30000 applications for both, but almost noone develops anymore for Windows Mobile 6.5).
Android has perfect integration with Google's services. Windows Mobile has not-so-perfect integration with Microsoft's services (e.g. you can't sync the calendar with Windows Live). Only Windows Mobile has good Exchange support, if you're an Exchange user.
Stability? That depends. I would not claim that one of them is more stable than the other. But Android works more smoothly (with transitions etc.).
My Nexus One has never crashed, and I have had it since before the launch.

Should I get the HD2?

Hi folks,
in a few months I am able to extend my Vodafone Business contract and get the HD2. Currently I own a Touch Diamond and am finally VERY satisfied (after trying several ROMs for 6 months).
I still have some doubts about the HD2, I hope you can help me here:
1. Scratch-resistance of the display and the case.
I heard that the display itself is made of glass. For my diamond, I have a screen protector and a black Bugatti pouch. No scratches till now. So should I even use a pouch/screen protector, or is there no need for it? I am no big fan of those InvisibleShield solutions.
2. Availability and (especially) quality of custom ROMs.
Vodafone ROMs are made to be backed up (just in case of warranty) and then to be deleted. Any good and fast ROMs out there which basically provide an "upgraded stock experience"?
3. microSD
There is one delivered with the phone, but I could not find the size of the storage.
4. Landscape typing
Is it possible (without any greater hacks) to send SMS in landscape-mode? For the Diamond, I always use the standard portrait mode, but I once typed in landscape on an iPhone (phone itself: yuck, but the typing was great).
Thanks so far, I hope that you can help a potential HD2-owner
Regards
I use a gel case for the back, leaving the screen exposed and never had problems with scratching; nor worried about it being scratched unlike previous phones ive owned.
I believe it will be a 2GB microSD
Rotate the phone and it will allow typing in SMS screen natively.
in all honesty since you are "very happy" with your diamond, and still gave a few months to run, I'd wait and see what is around closer to the time. the hd2 is great, but its not a day to day phone, its a tinkeres delight, but as a phone its more like a work in progress. (it auto phoned my boss last friday just because I pulled the earphone jack out, it doesn't mute the fm radio when you get texts so you miss them, reception stability in standby is hit and miss..... )
if you want a great grownups toy, do it, if you want a phone, stock with what you are happy with for now.i

While this is true, I'm also pretty certain that HTC will not be pumping out anymore Windows Mobile devices of this caliber. Their next HD2-like successor will be running Windows Phone 7 and not Windows Mobile. This is how they'll get people to pick up the newer OS in the future.
So if you like Windows Mobile for Windows Mobile and want to stick with this OS, I think the HD2 will remain in the limelight for quite some time.

very true, the tyraosaurus rex of the 6.x line, hehe
i have now had my HD2 since it got released.. and i agree with the above. It's a great toy but not a very stable user experience i have tried every single ROM out there and still not exited about this phone:...
i have just ordered the desire wich i find to be a much better phone, but with a smaller screen im afraid
when htc evo comes to Europa i will change phone again
i have been a long time windows mobile user, but im done with that now.. i have owned almost 30 phones and have even had an iphone 3g. my favorite OS i must say is android... user experience, stability, and productivity wise, android wins in my book..
in some way i hate to say it cause windows mobile has served me good for a lot of years!
Well, thanks for all the replies!
I won't buy it right away but will do so in the next 2-3 months.
But then it has to be very reliable for the next two years, since I will be traveling a lot (Europe and USA)
For the time being, I will have a look at other phones as well.
I have the US Tmo version and I am going to return it tomorrow if they still let me (not sure if I am still within the remorse period), I tried really hard to fall in love with winmo again (was an avid Tilt user) but it just doesn't cut it for me anymore
I have a 1.66 WWE Stock ROM and 2.10 radio and I'm not having any problems at all. I don't get why people always say HD2 is unstable. The only problems I'm encountering is what to do next because my HD2 is already running perfectly.

Regards

I have to agree with some of the things people are saying in this thread. Way too many people are attracted to the Hd2 because of the massive display, only to be disappointed because "it doesn't work" <-- Laughing at iphone users if you know what I mean.
Unless you are ready to handle a WinMo device, don't get the HD2. It requires too much tinkering in order to make it personally "YOURS" - and I'm not talking about personalization via pages upon pages of square iconic apps. *AHEM.
Regarding your questions:
1) I've used a vikuiti screen protector and have absolutely zero regrets. I am super picky when it comes to protecting my HD2 (going thru so many SP) so I hope you understand how much I crown this screen protector. Search my threads. I made a huge review about it.
2) Custom ROMS are always available- All the time. I use CleanEX mainly because gavin is an awesome and very active cook. He does a lot of the background stuff for CleanEX and when he release a ROM, ****, its awesome.
You should try it beta ROM, code named "AWESOMENESS" (all in caps)
3) Im using a 16GB class 6. Nothing but pure pleasure and speed when loading music or documents or games from the SD card. I had a 16Gb class 4. I noticed no difference in terms of speed.
4) typing in general, in sense UI can sometimes be laggy. Like you press an "A" and it does appear until a very split second later. But those laddyness are random. There have been lots of tweaks here and there to improve them. I never bothered, but they exist. I can live with the laggyness but I use SWYPE which has NO laggyness for me at all. =P
The problems I encountered were due to 3rd party software I installed or registry edits I made. After hard resetting phone and carefully choosing (and listing) the apps I install there are no major bugs to report.
Using only stock ROM so far, didn't find the need to risk a custom ROM yet.

That was the most useful post, thanks!
Well, basically it is the same as with the Diamond in the beginning: Requires some time to fiddle out all the settings, but then works like a charm. I have the Diamond for one and a half years now and it works perfectly. I even UC'ed mine to have the old data on it faster after flashing new ROMS.
People who complain that "it does't work" should get an iPhone imho, since everything works out of the box there.
I considered getting a phone with Android or a propietary solution (e.g. Nokia), but there is hardly anything to configure (and my beloved TomTom won't run). Will try getting my hands on the HD2 in the next weeks, to get a real opinion about it.
Thanks again!
Excuse me since I will give my point of view withot reading the entire thread.
I myself had HTC Diamond before I used an Iphone for over 3 years, the experiance between the two phones(Diamond vs HD2)is from sky to earth (I sold back the Diamond after using it for couple of days),if you have the time to customize it a bit,not necessarily ROM changing,Im on stock 1.6xx,I say you can easily fall in love with it,I pretty much can do anything with it, within my interest. Most of the problem comes after installing not so much tested 3rd party applications.
BTW I use it as my daily device and I had no such problems as mentioned in some of the posts above, may be just a new WM user beginners Luck!!
hagba, it was the same when the Diamod came out: New apps striving to be tested. Bugs everywhere. Good coders everywhere, too. So the bugs vanished after a few months.
And as I said, I will wait a few months until I get the phone, so I hope the most crucial bugs will be gone until then.
Thanks for sharing your opinion!
mines got the 1.66 rom and 2.07 radio direct from HTC......very stable.
I've had many winmo phones (mda compact/m600/kaiser/xperia x1) but the HD2 is the daddy!
Get one and you'll find it does everything your diamond will do......just faster and better!

I dont mean just software-wise but more hardwarewise too,so much differance between resistive and capacitive as well as the size of the screens, however prepare your self for a pleasent surprise if you ever decide to get the HD2,more so that you are familiar with the WM and its modding process.
I have had my HD2 for 4 months now. I use it everyday for business. works flawlessly, and I'm a heavy user. lots of phonecalls, emails etc. use it as a wireless router or bluetooth PAN when I'm away on business. I have never once had the phone crash. I'm still running stock 1.66 ROM. I would definitely recommend this phone.
No crash sounds good - oh lord, what have I lost data on the Diamond based on buggy ROMs
But I will have to switch ROMs at least away from the stock one, Vodafone always has to have something special there.

So now you've tried it, how many of you are considering jumping ship?

I originally started my love affair with Windows Mobile in my early teens when I received a Compaq Ipaq for which I had no real need for at the time. I then progressed to an Artemis (XDA Orbit), later a Touch Cruise (XDA Orbit 2) and finally last year a Rhodium (Touch Pro 2). While aware of Android's rise, and almost purchasing a Hero at the time I bought my Rhodium, I stuck to what I knew best.
At the time I believed my choice to have been the correct one. While the Hero looked pretty cool, I couldn't leave behind WM. I thought the TouchFlo 3D/Sense was beautiful (weather animations!), if only skin deep, and apps such as Coreplayer and FPSCE reinforced my belief that WM was still a relevant OS.
That was until I started playing around with the XDAndroid Port.
It was then I saw the potential of Android. The highly customisable interface, social network/google account integration, the awesome apps on the market and the speed of the webkit based browser! Everytime I returned to Windows Mobile I felt underwhelmed. I was never a fan of the iPhone however understood it had changed the game in regards to smartphones. Android was the best of both worlds, open source with a great community, fully touch UI with a growing appstore gaining support from major brands/developers.
While the Rhodium port was gathering pace, it was suffering from power management issues, backlight/wifi problems and most importantly, no sound. I knew from experience with the Touch Cruise that the progress was going to be slow but how long before a fully working port was available was anyones guess (Still not there!). It was then that I decided my days with Windows Mobile were coming to an end. Google had recently released the Nexus One which for me was perfect and after a few weeks of deliberating I made the jump and have never looked back.
Now I was always a vociferous defender of Windows Mobile but from the moment I got my first real taste of Android, I saw it for what it was. It hadn't really changed since that Compaq Ipaq and was so out of date it almost smelt off! I still have a soft spot for it, hence my lurking around the old boards seeing how you're all getting on. Since I heard about the breakthrough regarding the HD2 Android Port i've been looking on with great interest. It's fun reading through the threads and seeing people going through the same process that I did only a few months before.
Now I've seen a few posts where people have already stated that they are now seriously considering selling their HD2 and moving on to a "real" Android phone. My question is, how many more of you are there? Have any other people had the same change of heart now they have seen the possiblities?
Regards.
From the title of this article, I thought you meant the iphone 4!!
WM still does it for me - a mobile office, not a silly teenager's tweeting toy, it's still good, and I will use my remaining WM 6.x gadgets as long as they hold out.
When that happens which is probably in a year's time, I'll see what the market looks like, right now, it looks like it will mean a move to Android, but you never know WP7 might come through.
You never know, the iphone 4 may turn out to be a good phone.
rjstep3
I probably will. I like stability and if Android can stop my soft resets I'll be happy. Plus, I miss the apps. Even though it's infuriating to download the most popular task manager in the market place and to discover it has ads. Then you download the next one down and it also has ads.
I may be a little blind but Im sitting on the fence as Im sure many others are-
At the moment I have an unlocked HD2 for AT&T. This present me the following options:
1. Hold onto it for its beautiful screen, sexy home page, and accept the clunky deeper interface that is wm6.5 (Not trying to bash, its just not meant for finger friendly, and im also one of the users who suffers from slow texting issues and quick battery drains. Yes, ive tried the roms. Moving on.) The fact that I follow the Android for HD2 thread religiously shows that I am in the Android fan corner for HD2. This fact alone is one huge reason for staying power. Android on HD2 would extend the life of the HD2 dramatically. Meanwhile, WM6.5's screens past the homepage arent going to be getting any prettier.
2. Sell my HD2 Buy a Samsung Captivate since its AT&T's first true Android Smartphone and is getting rave reviews. Use my phone upgrade to get an Iphone4 for cheap, turn right around and sell it for 600 bucks (Yes, two have just sold in Phoenix for this much as well as on eBay). Be happy with my new Android phone and some extra spending cash for apps
3. Hold onto my HD2 until WP7 arrives and determine if I will use my upgrade for a new WP. If WP7 turns out to not be my cup of tea (But come on, XBOX Live and Zune integration? Im pretty much sold on that alone ) with any of the phones offered, then I shall resort to either option 1 or 2 above. I am still a huge fan of Windows Mobile, and I realize WP7 will be more akin to Apple in terms of closed source, but WP7 is what Windows needed to do. They needed to redo the deeper menus and make WM more finger friendly. Its the right step and I just hope they nail it.
Either way, Ive got my choices and am still completely on the fence. I just played around with the Captivate today and its quite an amazing and speedy phone. Not nearly as sexy as the HD2, but the functionality out of the box just felt great.
Im sure many of you are on the same fence as me and I wish you all the best in making your choice.
My contract runs out in Oct for my HD2 and I'll probably switch. Thats unless Navionics release their seachart app on Windows Mobile. if they do I'll just change to a sim only deal.
I bought the HD2 a few days ago on ebay. So far I've really enjoyed HTC sense and some other features
but the one thing I don't think I can live with is the crappy email program that comes with the phone. I absolutely hate it.
Generally speaking, I was impressed with winmo and found myself liking it despite all the negative reviews.
But I think I might switch over to the iphone.. plenty of apps, works pretty well with gmail... Otherwise I'll get some other android phone with HTC sense since thats really is a big thing for me. that and the led flash
I'm going on a 3 week trip to Europe... I guess I'll check out how far along the ports have come and then make my final decision then.
I disagree ... I was playing with Verizon's Droid X which is coming out soon - practically HD2 with Android (like EVO) and I'll tell you what: Android is one choppy OS - transitions wise iPhone wins all the way - I have HD2 and I am happy with it... it simply has better transitions then Android and what that means to the end user is most of the phone... If there is customization but the choppy one - no one will stick with it... And if 1GHz is not enough to make it smooth - I do not know then what is needed to make it smooth...
Great feedback guys! Just want to make it clear that in no way am I bashing the HD2 or WinMo, I just want to gather how many people who are using the Android port are now considering making a permanent switch. Obviously if a stable daily use ROM becomes available you won't have that problem (and I may even consider switching to HD2!!), but I succumbed to my impatience once I found myself using the unstable port more than my native WinMo OS.
Thanks for the response.
Android on HD2 isn't stable yet and won't be for a while.
I already had an Android phone before the HD2. I'm not really into the 'apps' scene or into social networking apps or games on my phone, so there isn't really much in Android for me. The google apps were better and it didn't slow down on txt messages.. but that's about it.
Android wouldn't play many video formats.. not sure if it could access my file server.. the pdf reader was poor quality.. the browser would forget all my tabs when memory ran low (probably not an issue on HD2..).. apps still crashed..
Despite WM's lack of polish in the UI and other things, I think I still like WM more. I'll probably still use WM more even if I install Android.
Just got 3 hd2's for the family. Wanted the highest spec'd winmo phone to give wp7 a chance. I haven't been that impressed with Android, apps still crash and with cht and max sense, I don't see what an android phone can do that my hd2 can't. Would never switch to at&t.
already made my choice and win mo and the hd2 won
why?...
i had a desire and hd2 for a week to trial both and although the desire was impressive i found the hd2 to be better for what i used a "phone" for...
video - more options (xvud, avi's etc) and better quality on hd2
camera - clearer and more detailed
apps - yes the android market has lots of apps but like iphone most of them are crap!, the only thing id use that winmo doesnt have is layar. winmo still has fpsece and a few more pieces of software thats unique (loving Meteor at the minute)
i also took the gamble that we'd have a decent working android port at some point anyway, are we likely to get some porting winmo on an android device? lol - not likely, so i figured that with the hd2 id got the best of both worlds and therefore more choice...
seriously, go back 2 years and you wouldnt have had the choice of different OS's on the same device. its a good job theres so many clever people in this community, they've really made a difference!

Too true. Whilst I really like my HD2 and most of its features suit what I do, WiMo (in my opinion) is now over looked when it comes to new apps. I already mentioned the Navionics seacharts app that i really want and having decided to try Skype, I go to the site to find thats dropped for WiMO. I can't wait for fully functioning dual boot WiMo/Android on my HD2. That would be phone heaven

Noticed a few posts regarding the video playback options so thought i'd inform you all that Android now has just as many, if not more playback options than WinMo. That was the biggest single issue for me when I made the switch. I used TCMP and Coreplayer for years. Being a Usenet/Newsgroup subscriber, I download all of my content in xvid/x264 and being able to simply drag the files across to my phone rather than convert to .mp4 was a killer feature for me. I somehow JUST mangaged to get by converting the odd film or two for long train/coach journeys!
Luckily in the past month or so, a new media player has arrived called RockPlayer, which is the first legitimate xvid/wmv/x264/mkv/mov/asf etc. player on Android. The performance is great and the UI clean and simple. It may lack the deeper options of Coreplayer, however I only ever found myself playing with the rendering options etc. when I encountered laggy playback, albeit on less powerful devices than the HD2.
Anyway, video playback should no longer be a worry for anyone considering Android. However, if like me you are outside the US, there is no Android screen as large as the HD2 (No Evo 4G ) and for that reason, I look back at you guys with envy!!
Thanks again for the great response, it's great to see the range of opinions on the matter!
Regards.
Never gonna give it up never gonna let it down ! Win 6.5 HD 2
naaaah... I'll stick to hd2. I am just a winmo man I guess... maaaan... I love this device. who needs all those fart apps? the ONLY two apps I might miss are Plants vs Zombies and Rebirth (gotta love dat synth music ).
other then that - leo... a true king of the smartphones. lol
I can't wait for a flashable android rom for the hd2. tbh, i'm just bored with minmo now and everyone seems to be making apps for iphone or android these days.
The android port for the hd2 is what made me want to go back to android. So the other day I picked up the samsung vibrant lol. I still love my hd2 though still keeping it
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Maybe im just different but why not have both? I am a tech guy who likes all platforms. I own 4 symbian phones, 2 winmo phones, and for games I own a ipod touch. I thought about android many times and was always waiting for the hardware to catch up and there are finally phones running android that have the specs I would like but they all went with cdma versions. So I will see what comes out in the future for a top spec gsm android. Another thing is I dont ever buy phones on contract and firmly believe that the carrier and phone you use should have nothing to do with each other. I bought my HD2 because I wanted a new winmo phone and there is no denying that the HD2 is the top choice for winmo. Remember no one phone will fill all your needs and manufactures do that for a reason, so you buy more phones... but this is where the consumer gets confused and think if they want new features they need a new phone, just have both! In the end though I will most likely stay away from android and go with a meego device for my linux phone kicks, as I am questioning why google feels the need to be around me 24 hours a day, in my search engine, in my web browser, in my computer OS, in my TV, in my phone? Call me old school but thats to much for me to give one company all my info, I like to keep it deverse among many companies so no one company knows everything about me. Again, maybe im just different?
Now I've seen a few posts where people have already stated that they are now seriously considering selling their HD2 and moving on to a "real" Android phone. My question is, how many more of you are there? Have any other people had the same change of heart now they have seen the possiblities?

Having owned the Iphone2 I returned to HD2 because in my opinion Apple delivers outdated technoloy, tries to control even media content and the information value of the Apple "Today" screen is exactly zero.
A great toy for "in"-people. After two days your tired of the fancy applications and start using apps which make sense. All of these you can get for WM. Since I have not used Android I wouldn`t dare to comment. But looking at pictures of the GUI it seems to be not very different from the HTC-Sense GUI.
All in all I see no need to think about anything else than HD 2 ! I´m afraid that WM 7 will rather be a step back in the direction of Apple. Lets hope for high value software development for WM 6.5.XXXXX
I´ll keep my HD2 for another generation, I´d say. I´m perfectly fine with this
brilliant device. The apps, mods and tweaks for Manila/Sense are what I would
miss, Android does not come with that much office related stuff I use and need.
In a year or so, we´ll see an updated iPhone 5 (or whatever they´ll call it),
we´ll know more about WP7, and HTC will have HD3 and other nice devices for us.
I´ll never again buy Samsung, their products are never really close to 100%,
they just make too many half-finished products at mediocre quality.
Motorola? Nokia? SE? No way. Therefore, no options for me.

[Q] Should I buy the HD2? Jan 11

Hi guys.
i know some people will say this has been asked before, but i am posting from the date from today.
I want to buy a HD2, but i don't know whether it is the right time...
Because now it has the success of WP7 and Android, I'm wondering if ti is still worth it. The hardware seems abit old now, but it is essentially the same as a HD7.
ATM, i have a TG01, (snapdragon 1GHz WINMO, resistive) So i'm experienced with the speed But however, in our forum, there are soo few active members and cooks - not much support. the resistive touchscreen and Also the lack of RAM is driving me insane. (only 55mb on boot with sense 2.5 + winmo 6.5.x) So one reason of the HD2 is the RAM and the screen... On the other hand i have a tab. It isnt just mine specifically it is my family's. So i dont get to use it all the time and personalize it. (the orange san francisco isnt mine anymore btw, i gave it to my brother)
So i only really have a TG01. I have been using Winmo for a long time, but now everyone is making the switch to Android. So if i get the HD2, will i have good battery life performance etc. I will probs be using WP7 and Android. Is WP7 working perfectly yet? i know we can access the live sevices but will microsoft be continually be patching it? All my friends are using android.. should i use android on the HD2 or just get an android device?
And the hardware... do you think it is still powerful enough? how much longer will the community last for? When i got my Tg01, within 3 months the XDA forum was empty! they all sold and got an Android device or HD2.
So i get it know will the timing be right? Will devs still be cooking for WM and upgrading Android etc? Or will they move on? Because i see alot of members selling their HD2 for a DHD or other android devices. I dont think i can afford a DHD...
I'm really stuck here... I don't know if i should get the device or not... Should i wait? Or wait for what device? I know when the dual cores come out, they will be far too expensive!
Where can i get a cheap HD2 from? Can any one point me to one £150-£180?
Thank you to all who reply!
Quite a few questions there, no?
First of all, HD2 is still on par with most devices on the market. In other words, hardware-wise, no issue. My unit was bought at introduction time, it´s doing what it should without any problem since more than 15 months now.
That is quite impressive, I´d say. But the very age of the model, as of today, is no sign that it´s outdated.
As far as I know, TG01 was never on par with HD2, even if it comes with a similar CPU. However, I don´t think there is a massive difference.
The key difference is the capability of using multiple OS platforms, and you already described all other points which are worth mentioning.
One thing is clear, however: The WinMo threads in the HD2 forums have become a bit quiet, since there are only few updates for WinMo and Sense these days, so no need and options for chefs to re-do what they greatly did in the past.N Also, tweaking and modding has slowed down a bit.
Clearly, the Android threads in the HD2 section are quite busy, and WP7 to some extent, too.
Returning to the very age of the model, it is natural that many people, chefs and users, move on. Windows Phone Classic may be a dead end, who knows. Windows Phone 7 might be a failure for Microsoft, who knows. The fun part is that with an HD2, you can use all of them.
My guess is that there will be quite some development for HD2 Android solutions in the coming 6 to 12 months, steadily fading to small activities over the time. Also, WP7 has quite an impact inside the HD2 user community, but I believe there are certain limits.
Once newer, much stronger hardware specifications will become upscale smartphone mainstream, most users will change. But remember, there are not too many people willing to spend €500+ every 12 months - one more reason to stick with an HD2 once you bought it and you´re fine with it.
You most probably will find used units on ebay or such at your target price.
I think if you really want to play around with things a bit, you won´t be disappointed. But, if you are more a casual user, I don´t know what to recommend.
Myself, I think I will stick to my HD2 for another year or so - this will set a new record, to be honest. But I am perfectly fine with that great device. And as of now, I am completely fine with WinMo 6.5/Sense; for the fun of it, WP7 from time to time. I don´t like Android, at least not the current versions, but I am extremely happy my device gave me the opportunity to try all options at no extra cost.
To be honest with you, I haven't read anything past "...success of"
But It's better that you wait till MS's update and see what happens then.
That's if you want WP7, but if you want Android its HD2 is currently awesome at Android

Thanks for the reply man! Yeh the TG01 is no match for the HD2. The only reson i got it is because it was a bargain; £150 PayG at Orange UK (Feb 2010) Presumably because it was a poor device in terms of software. I would consider myself a flash junkie. I am constantly trying to find the best ROM for speed, stability and RAM. (as the stock ROMs were really bad!) However , nowadays I'm too busy to be doing all that. I have exams and things going on, and i can't put up with the unstability of my TG01. I want to get a HD2, but keep it on a WP7 Rom, or Android. Then i can switch back and forth. Or if i want,
Winmo 6.5. I won't have to keep on reflashin, as these are pretty much stablw right? The HD2 seems like the ideal device for being cheap and flexibility. Yeh i agree too, the hardware is on par with todays tech. My only concern is the dual cores arriving, but i won't be able to afford them anyway!
Now, my only other problem is battery life... I have mixed reviews on this. Some say it is good, others say it is bad. Can someone please be honest and state what it is? Is battery life better on WM+Sense, WP7 or Android? Because on my TG01 has crap battery; it is only 1000mah powering a 4.1 inch 1ghz device. I'm sick of charging my phone every night.
So if i buy an extended battery, it would solve my problems? Because i read somewhere that Android will not support extended batteries?! Is this also true with WP7?
Thanks man for the time for replying!
Power consumption is something massively individual.
I got used to turn off Wlan and automatic data downloads (not only, but also because I don´t have a data flatrate) off, an easy step in each OS.
My worst experience was with Android (which sucked energy like hell, but there were strong improvements), while WinMo/Sense and WP7 are now on par (as an "average" user with some phone calls, some text messages, and some limited surfing, some offline navigation, too) for me - I charge every second day. On vacation (much less of above mentioned usage) it´s even good for 4 days.
But then again, if you´re also gaming, take long-time internet surfing sessions and such, you´ll be charging an HD2 every day, too.
Btw, dual boot only works with WinMo 6.5 and Android (as you can install the latter on your SD card), means you would have to re-flash to switch between WP7 and Android or between WinMo 6.5 and WP7. Then again, the flashing process is a matter of a couple of minutes, and if you use different SD cards, the setup is done quite quickly...
EDIT: Just forgot, the enhanced battery. It won´t work under Android or WP7, when I understand various threads correctly... but would have to check that...

On vacation (much less of above mentioned usage) it´s even good for 4 days. f

Thanks alot my friend i think it pretty much sloves my problem. on my tg01 with sense and wm6.5 battery lasted 2 hrs with heavy wifi usage on opera. this is why i had to go 'old school' with touchflo 3d and wm6.1 fkr battery performance. so the hd2 battery is better i read somewhere that some extended batteries work with the hd2 (i think the official ones ddont work) any way thanks alot man, you've made me really happy, im trying get one cheap now, just need to save up a bit more...
Im still open to suggestions from other users on their opinions
believe me friend,hd2 is best mobile ever created.2 of my friends have hd7 and DHD,both of them keeps looking at my hd2 for what it can do!!the only + point on their device is that the screen of both the handsets is better than hd2..but it dnt matters..also,it is half the price of both of them.
so i suggest you to close your eyes and get an hd2..hehe
that is whole lot of words there...

The hd2 will take a lot of time and effort to get it working the way you want, keep that in mind. Battery life on the android and wp7 ports are not nearly as good as a native device, and it will take some work getting the battery to a manageable level. Also, getting wp7 working properly is getting much harder to set up with the problems unlocking it and the fact that you have to call microsoft and lie to them about what phone you have to get an activation code, which recently microsoft has been catching on and is now usually requesting a hd7 imei and proof of purchase... plus who knows what will happen when they update.
If I were you, I would save up your money until the next generation of phones comes out and get something then, cause odds are most major devs will move on when better devices come out. They've already been developing the hd2 for over a year, and while at this point the hardware is still top of the line, soon it will not be. Many HD2 owners do not want to admit that fact and they claim the hd2 runs android as good as a native phone with as good of battery life, but that's just not true. The HD2 is a great phone for the fact that it can run multiple os's, and you can dual boot wp7 on nand with android on sd and no other phone can do that... and I wouldn't trade my hd2 for anything right now because I like running 2 OS's on my phone... but when new hardware comes that will change. And the hd2 doesn't run wp7 or android as good as native devices.
So it's up to you and what you want. If you have a lot of spare time to tinker and get things working well, then it can be a great phone... but if you want a phone that will work good out of the box or just want to run one os really well, go for a native android or wp7 phone. Like I said... I would save up money for a few months and see whats out then once you have some more money saved up or can sign a contract with a carrier to get a cheaper top of the line phone.

Thanks for the input! I'm only limited to five thanks per day :/ (but sill thank you tommorow!.)
you said that devs will move on to other devices... i know the other devices have more powerful hardware than the HD2, but most run android. as far as i know, no Android phone can dual boot WinMo, or WP7 and there is no development for it. You see, i like WP7 OS, it looks so nice and elegant.. but i dislike the restiction. so the WP7 devices are useless to me. But if i get a HD2 , i can dual boot between WP7 and Android (for tweaking!)
About the battery life issue.. i heard some ppl with claims that WP7 on the HD2 has begged battery life, as it cannot multitasking etc. WinMo with sense is a resource hog. Androidd too.
That sucks about the Microsoft getting suspicious. I would like go use the live services, but only for the free apps. But hopefully XDA can be patching this so we can use live sevices Would it also be possible to use my friends' HD7 Imei?
Also i understand youur point about tinkering the device a lot. as i have said in my orginal post, i don't have much find and all that and frankly I'm too lazy nowadays! Also i have never owned a HTC WinMo device, so flashing is very different and new to me! I still don't understand half these terms :S Hopefully i can just keep it stable between WP7 and Android. I can request from the seller to put these on
Hmmm. Should i save up for another devise
or get the HD2.. i like the freedom of the HD2... And I'm quite impatient!
I hve been dreaming about it all night...
Thanks mate!
A good rule of thumb is always, buy if you need it now, if you can wait then wait.
I've mine since last year and it always performed beautifully under WM6.5, but now with Android is like I have a brand new phone, seriously. I'd say go for it only if you need it now, if you can wait and either gather more information or wait for a specific release that you might have the eye on, then do that.

thanks for the reply! (sorry my thanks limit is full!)
But when you say wait... wait for what device? i prefably don't want a phone contract. I'm happy with my network with unlimited internet. imagining it on the HD2 will be amazing!
like i said, i can't afford the dual cores, but as the other member has pointed out, i can save up. I'm sick with my tg01 and want a HD2 so bad. if other ee devicefs get released they won't be able to dual boot.
thanks!

I wouldn't suggest having the seller install those for you... to get things working good it takes a lot of testing and trial and error. Especially if you want to dualboot... that's not simple. The SD card needs to be partitioned in a certain way, and wp7 needs to be installed on nand, and then you have to use an android build that can run from SD card, and most SD builds will have to be modified to be able to boot with magldr. And then you're gonna have to learn how to set it up and use it so that the battery drain isn't too bad with the SD android build. And for wp7 it takes a lot of work setting it up, changing the registry and successfully getting an activation code from Microsoft. Also you have to make sure you have an SD card that's compatible with wp7 and that runs android builds well.... sandisk class 2 seem the best, but they're not guaranteed to work. It's not a simple setup and it takes work to keep it working and updated. It takes hours just to correctly setup when you know exactly what you're doing and don't run into many issues... but many run into issues and it takes days getting them worked out.
Then you're gonna want to keep your builds updated, so you're gonna want to know how everything is installed so you can do updates when available.
It's not a simple, troublefree setup and issues are still popping up. Just keep that in mind... most sellers will not know how to set it up and if they do, it probably wont be setup well and you have to do a lot of testing and trial & error to get a setup and builds that work for you. There's many different android builds with different issues, and most SD builds are not very updated recently... but if you want dualboot you have to run a SD android build. You wont have recovery with SD builds and not everything works as well as nand builds.
You should definitely spend a few days doing research before deciding to get a hd2 so you know what you're getting yourself into. Its not a phone that can be quickly setup and used without problems. Only get it if you're willing to put a lot of time into it to learn how to set it up to work good for you.

Thanks! But as you see, the seller here is a xda member with android currently installed. He asked me what rom to have on it, but we haven't confirmed if I am buying the device yet. I though that wp 7 install was relatively easy, but I guess I'm. Wrong. I have been reading threads on it, and it isn't so easy to dual boot between the both. I have also read threads on the bad points of wp7 on the hD2. I guess it will require alot of time and effort to set my device up with all that HSPL, microsd magldr work :/ I was hoping it would be easy. Oh well I guess if I get it, I could play around with winnow as o Abe never experienced sense on the hd2 before with all that ram. Then use a micro SD build. That process seems relatively easy.
Thanks for the input

I buyed my HD2 in December and I'm very happy with it.
Hardware is so-so. DHD is said to have much faster GPU, but on the other hand, HD7 have same processor. And there are dual core devices coming. But i would not see that as big problem. Everyone is still at single-core processors, which means that most games and apps will still support them until most people switch to dual-core. And that will not happen quickly.
Performance is OK. Android can be a bit slow sometimes, but that may be case for android, not the HD2. And WP7 builds can even beat native WP7 device.
Battery life: My HD2 lasts about a day with moderate-heavy usage. Friend have DHD and reports similar battery life. But it have flaws. For example, today i watched 15min SD video from the SD card and it somehow drained 10% of the battery (WiFi and everything was off). In fact, it's actually hard to get thin smartphone that will last much longer than that and dual-core phones will probably have even smaller battery life (and AFAIK batteries are not evolving much these days). I'm used to charging my phone everyday, so it's not really a problem for me. As for extended batteries, some Android builds support official HTC extended batteries.
Community will surely slowly shrink, but based on current activity, i say that we still have a lot time.
So, if you want to buy new phone, you will have to buy high-end phone to beat HD2. And based on your price range, i would say that HD2 is currently your best choice.

Thanks! i guess i will settle for a HD2 then! (Hopefully) I understand your point, that the dual cores will be useless as most phones are single core, but isn't mobile tech advancing so quickly? anyway, the flagship nexus s is single core so most people will be inflection core. and when i get he HD2 my next upgrade after that will be next summer. By then dual cores will be primarilzed and i can upgrade from there?
Thanks!
Tech is advancing quickly, but masses are not changing phones that quickly. It will take time until mainstream android will move to dual-core. There will be bonuses of dual-core of course, but many people will still be on single-core devices, which means that most stuff would still be usable on older phones until majority of devices will be dual-core. And thanks to devs, who are always providing latest OS to our phones, i think we will hold on even longer
That is just what I'm thinking, but i may be wrong.
Im only gonna touch battery issues. The thing is, there arent any anymore LOL. With HD2 you get to change the radio of the device. Which means that you literally change the way HD2 uses its network and wifi. By switching to a previous radio, i have increased my battery to 1.5days(XBOX live games 30mins, Zune 60+-30mins, Basic web, email, 20 texts, 20mins call) without affecting performance. So you can experiment and do wonders with this devil. In addition, I dont think you need to worry about android's battery life at all. My ast android build(in sd card, not nand, nands are better) ran for two days on 1.5ghz oc'ed and I never use app killers(these kill battery) or setcpu. So, you know you will be fine with HD2. Worst case scenario, you buy an extended battery with kickstand and get a kickstand
radio i use is 2.14, latest is 2.15.

Thanks! I'm assuming this is running on WP7? that sounds great! i aint be using my phone too much for music and games, probably only once in a while (i use my ipod for that) but i will be using it a lot for web browsing and texting! those results sound great! (much better than my tg01) but is there a problem with running on WP7 that you cannot let the battery drain fully and your device won't boot?
