Android 3.0 Platform Highlights - Streak 5 General

Now this does look nice and its for Tablets
Steve is going to love it

Should be the reason why goog's sdk site times out...

not impressed really... imo a 5'' will become too cluttered

I agree. The 3.0 seems to tend more to full size tablets like for the Inspiron Duo or Galaxy Tab. The Streak's 5in is more to embellish the mobile phone, not so much to make a new playground. But it'll be interesting to see what the community can make of it.

The new UI brings fresh paradigms for interaction, navigation, and customization

you got a point there. many case studies all over the world report that bragging is the real engine of nowadays society, money is just the means to an end

I'm hoping it can be done, if the screen density is set right, I'm sure it would look as good a the bigger screened devices.
Actually, I'll retract that, it'll be damn awesome if it can be done

I don't like it either but I miss not having access to the AppStore. If this made possible iPhone apps for my Streak I would adopt it without a second thought.
Imagine how nice the iOS would look on the streak's immense screen!
I personally love the iOS, but hate apple
EDIT: Ahh, it's not actually a port of IOS4, it's a 'copy'. Dunno who made it, but kudos, it looks pretty damn good
im pretty sure the apk from that is taken from those fake iphones running android in china. those chinese people are amazing at faking devices.

They are amazing at first glance, then you hold one and realize the true POS nature it is.
Personally, I would never want to run any iOS on my Streak. Talk about ruining a near perfect device!
Agreed, iOS is the problem. The iPhone hardware is just standard smartphone fair, iOS is the reason i dont want one.
5 of my mates who have i phones all say they will get an android device next after seeing my streak, my mates desire and my other mates sgs. So why would any android user want the inferior ios on their device. No thanks.

i would love to see how ios would work on such a large beautiful screen.
The apps for iphone are more refined and mature than andorid....
How ever I must the UI is better for android.
Iphones can dual boot, why shouldnt we at least have the option too. I had an iphone that ran android poorly and got hot in two minutes, but it was fun and cool either way.

Galaxy Tab...Epic win?

What do you guys think? Will a 7' screen be enough? If I got one I would get wifi only so I can tether with my Epic. I wish it was SAMOLED.
Personally, I think a 7' screen is a bit overkill for a mobile device. That's just me though.
Sorry, couldn't resist.

Anyways I think 6 inch and 7.5 inches will be alright to keep it portable
I wasn't aware that a Wifi-only version would exist, either. I wonder how that affect Market status.

same specs too right?

Yeah, it doesn't seem like the tab has anything on the epic at all other than screen size. It seems like a very introductory product that won't be anywhere near the level of the iPad (as much as I hate to say it). I'm sure if we give it another year there will be one that's better than the iPad.
personally, i am a "pocket guy" when it comes to phones. i dont do clips. the Epic is about as big as I'd get and still be able to pocket the sucker.
i just dont get devices like the Tab or the dell streak or whatever hitting that 5-7 inch mark and still marketing it as mobile as a phone. i feel like they're trying to copy apple and invent a new product, the ipad was a risk but its paying off, i feel like these other companies would do better to directly copy the ipad and make an even larger device like 9-10 inches, a true tablet. i'm not digging the phone/tablet crossovers, to me its too big to be a phone and too small to be a tablet and get FULL web browsing capability.
just my .02
If the wifi-only version price really is $500 that'll torpedo it right there considering the base wifi-only iPad is the same price. I love my Epic, but if I had to choose between those 2 I'd get the iPad. Put the wifi-only version of the Galaxy tab at $350 and then it makes more sense IMO.

But you wouldn't have access to all the paid apps on the android market that you purchased if you chose the ipad.
And the modding possibilities!
The Tab also lasts longer than a epic..battery wise. Its a great home multitasking utility. I would def use it as a ereader/movie player as well as automating some tasks in my home.

Regardless, if that's what you're looking for, the iPad is MUCH better. I'm a huge fan of Android & I dislike Apple but the tab is really the iPad's little brother. It just doesn't compare.

That doesn't make any sense. The Galaxy Tab is nothing like the iPad. If you wanna compare things compare the iPad to every other tablet that came before it. Comparing the Galaxy Tab is like comparing it to the Blackberry Playbook.

actuallu thinking about it it would make one hell of an xbmc remote...
The Galaxy tab costs 600 dollars so no, it will probably fail.
Eh... if I were to get a tablet, it would probably be an iPad. I have android on my phone. I don't need a replicated device on a larger screen. I'd also have more games to play on the iPad which would be fun

Streak on 2.2 outperforms most competition

I just wanted to post a couple of links with recent reviews of Dell Streak running on official (un-tweaked) Froyo build. In most cases Streak outperforms Iphone 4, HTC EVO, Samsung Epic 4G or itself running on Android 1.6
While the official build is not perfect, it certainly gave the Streak a well deserved and anticipated power boost and now many reviewers take notice. The Streak happens to be the most practical and entertaining consumer portable internet device right now. With a few bits of marketing genius this could be the ultimate game changing device. Once you get people off the mindset of looking at it as some sort of super-sized phone and instead look at it as the most portable tablet (sorry galaxy tab but one can't really carry you around w/out some sort of bag) then you know that you have a peace of design masterpiece. Only those who don't really know what they're missing will dismiss this incredible device as something that I just noted the previous sentence.
So here are the two reviews, let's continue to work on developing more tweaks to make our Streaks even better.

If you are having trouble getting it installed then unmount your SD card and download it. It will install just fine then you can remount your SD card and move it there if you want. There is an issue with it trying to install to SD card straight from the market.

Exactly. Anyway, I love my Streak, but this test is not what I call objective. It´s like testing notebooks with Vista against a Win7. Guess who is the winner?

The size factor is a hit or miss based on one's needs. A person that needs to consolidate most of their devices, still be portable enough to fit in a pocket, have great browsing experience, and a phone on top of that, should look no further as Streak will do all of those things. Only the people who actually used the device for a while and for it's true intended purpose (i.e. MID device) appreciate this unique concept.
+1 on the fanboy slant...
I read all the tech blogs when it comes to phones/pdas (most, anyway--who can keep up with all of them) and it seems like the only time Mossburg's name comes up is if it is an Apple product being reviewed.
I chose the Streak for two reasons. One, Android. Two, size. Apple cant compete with the Streak in either variable. If you like iOS, but need the bigger size, the iPad is too big and cant make calls. If you have used and become accustomed to Android's OS, then anything other than iOS is a step backward.
I would say that the Streak made it to the "top of the worst" list, because it is the ONE device that competes with both the iPhone and iPad. Not necessarily an iPhone killer, but possibly the first real "weapon" that can find a chink in Apple's armor...and of all the manufacturers out there, who woulda thunk it would be Dell?
Yea, if that douche is trying to be a viable journalist, he should learn to gather facts. Most importantly, he needs to learn how to bring an unbiased, and educated article to the table, which he does not. It's sad that people will actually read this and jump on board with what he's saying as the views expressed in the articles are shoved down their throats. Sheep I tell ya!
I have an Ipad just bought a couple of weeks ago from TK Maxx for just £265 & must say its great peice of tech only really useful indoors. I use the Dell Streak as my main phone & it suits me perfectly. Can use it as a internet tab, satnav, media player, games player, etc, etc, with a screen I dont need to squint to see & it all fits in my pocket
"the iPhone 4, even with all the new competition and the antenna controversy, is "still the best overall smartphone," said Mossberg."
How can an iPhone be better when:
Must buy a case so you can hold it anyway to talk. FAIL
Have so many pixels and so little screen that you don't take advantage. I mean your finger aren't getting any smaller is it? I love the resolution but at 3.5 inch it is as useful as a 320x240 you can read perfect on ANY of the screens. again FAIL
You are in the middle of the day and for some reason your iphony has 1% battery left and all your mates are android users or even worst NOKIA... so no charger or usb cable what you do? ok buy a battery? NOT. you have to buy a 100$ expansion/case/battery whatever... FAIL
What if I want to put a BIG A55 analog clock on the home screen so my blind eyes can see the time properly? can I do that? FAIL...
Custom ROM? FAIL
Oh yes I'm moving to Antarctica they use CDMA can I use my iphone? FAIL
Well I did found out they don't use CDMA but use GSM can I just get a regular sim for it? FAIL
If I'm not using AT&T can i get price-raped for less please? FAIL
There is a huge list.
I can agree the streak can see a flaw on its size but most of the ppl that owns a streak is because of that.
some people just aren't evolved enough to appreciate the streak...makes me feel sad for them(or mossberg in particular)..
What did you expect. I'd expect to see the same style review, somewhat,
if I went to a rabid Android site, who reviews an iPad or iPhone.
Give the ipad credit when due: it has a touch screen and you can go on the internet.
People just dont understand how amazing this phone is. Slap a apple sign on it and you have a hit.

It makes me laugh, when I had my SE X10i I saw these Apple fan-boys posting all kinds of **** about how much better the Iphone was.
When I had my HD2 running Android 2.2 I also saw this ****
Now I have the Streak and guess what this **** is here too.
I can now see why there was a separate iphone developers site created. So all these little idiots can go over there and stop bugging us Android users with the usuall bull**** about how much better their phones are.
I mean im very sorry thet I dont have an iPhone, let me sell my more customizeable, versatile, non anally retentive phone and buy an iPhone so I can be like all the other little sheep out there
The biased factors is too much. I need to be a journalist then. Here is a real opinion. Why does the and how does the streak compete with the ipad? The streak is a mini tablet and phone hybridized into one device while the ipad is just a tablet (giant 3rd generation ipod touch). The streak was a head of its time. If anything i say the iphone 4 didn't meet expectations. I say the best device of 2010 has to be the EVO 4g and i'm not even on Sprints network. It works and works well. It suffers from no problems. Galaxy S= GPS problems. Iphone 4 = antenna problems. All i can say is Mossburg KYS (kill your self) twice.

I just don't understand why the Dell Streak is supposed to take on the iPad. iPad, like someone else mentioned, is really more meant for either home or office only use. You really don't want to travel with that thing, it is huge. If I feel like going to lunch, I'm not going to take an iPad, I'm going to take a connected phone, and the Dell Streak is the best alternative for that.
Of course, this guy is also reviewing the Dell Streak that is Android 1.6. Dell REALLY screwed the pooch with that, because everyone that has switched to Froyo knows how amazing this device is because of THAT.

why would you want honeycomb on a cellphone? Honeycomb is geared towards 7" plus displays like netbooks, tablets, and in the very near future 7 inch doubledin car stereo systems, yup you heard me right 7 inch touchscreen stereo systems with honeycomb will be coming out soon, my guess 2012 or 2013, currently trying to hack a chinese stereo system with windows ce on it, it has a 800 mhz processor and a separtate 500 mhz gpu processor, trying to hack into it now. I know the hardware can support honeycomb.

Yea, I know usually for 7" but I actually feel that the Vibrant's screen is big enough for Honeycomb...I mean its not that that much smaller the the Galaxy Tab 7".

Get a Nook Color. CM7 nightlies are available now and the HC isn't bad (not great either, but they're working on it).
I'd be happy with GB on the Vibrant. I have it on my work phone (G2).
to those saying honeycomb will NOT come to smartphones...you guys are idiots. honeycomb does and will support phones, its just android needed an OS update to properly support the tablet market to fix scaling and hardware issues/support + new features.
