really want to root my NS - Nexus S General

Hi, i really want to root my NS, but iv got so much stuff on it now that i dont wanan wipe it , which happens when you unlock the bootloader, is there anyway i can keep my stuff? or backup maybe?

Download titanium backup pro to save ALL your data, apps, etc. then do to lack of sd storage you will need to partition internal storage or backup to pc. Do not backup system data if upgrading to a custom rom.
Hope this helps, hit thanks button.

It does. Your only real option is to move all the apps you can to the SD storage or to buy MyBackUpPro from the market. I believe its 4.99$ and it does not require root. However, it will also not save any app data (logins, scores, settings, etc.).
Alternatively, you can do what I did when I had to wipe my phone: write down the apps you use and then just redownload them one by one. It sucks but its the only free sure-fire way to get all your apps back.

fair enough, thanks for the reply people

Hold on.
Shrivelfig's found a method that might let you root without unlocking your bootloader and erasing the phone.
Download these two files:
clockwork recovery
su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip
Place the su zip one in your sdcard.
Place the other on your computer.
Put your phone in fastboot mode (power off, then hold volume up and power key at the same time until the phone boots to a white screen).
Use fastboot to boot the phone into the clockwork recovery:
Code:
fastboot boot recovery-clockwork-3.0.0.5-crespo.img
If you're not sure how to get fastboot working on your computer, follow the instructions that Allgamer gives in this thread, but don't do the oem unlock command!
Once in clockwork, flash the su file to the phone by following these steps from this thread:
select install ZIP from sdcard (power button to apply)
select choose zip from sdcard (power button to apply)
select su-version#-signed.zip file you downloaded earlier, and apply it
select yes - install su-version#-signed.zip
confirm it says "Install from sdcard complete"
select go back
select reboot
Reboot.
If it works, you should be rooted, with a locked bootloader, and none of your data erased.
That said, never hurts to have a backup of your precious data on the sdcard that you can copy over to the computer.
Please let me know if that works; I've not seen anyone who wasn't already rooted report back on the success or failure of this method.

LOL...yeah. That's why I said "might" work and pointed out I've not seen any success stories on virgin phones yet.
I'm asking him to be a guinea pig to some small extent, but I don't see how you'd soft-brick with this any more than doing the oem unlock and pushing the recovery image afterwards.

Issue after rooting

I recently rooted my HTC Hero and had no issues with it. I was trying to nandroid backup it, but now I can't download any of the programs from the Market. I have a restore image, but I dont have any clue how to get it onto my phone. Help would be amazing, I hope I didn't brick my phone.

You haven't bricked your phone. If you are positive you have a restore image or that you've done a nandroid back up. You should be able to boot into recovery and restore you back up by:
**You should either have your Nandroid back up still on your SD card or you saved it somewhere on your computer when you did your first Nandroid back up, if the latter -- copy the ENTIRE Nandroid folder onto your SD card and proceed with the following steps.
1. Turn your phone off
2. Press and hold home+power to boot into recovery
3. Choose Backup/Restore
4. Choose Restore backup
5. Choose the back up file (labeled Nandroid)
6. Confirm that you want to restore the backup by pressing the home button.
7. Wait a while
8. Reboot your phone
And report back if you have problems.
Looks like when I go into the recovery page, the only option I have is Clear Storage, nothing about restoring

You are positive that you flashed a recovery ROM correct? Do you remember doing steps 13-19 from the guide below? Also, what resource did you use to "root" your phone and did it ever mention anything about installing a custom recovery image, if so -- what version of the recovery image do you currently have?

Make sure that you are not holding down both the Power and Home keys. You only need to hold down Home and TAP power to make it come on. Once you feel the vibrate you can let go of the Home key.
Yes, Kcarpenter's right...I wouldn't want to be held liable for deleting your data, but then again...it'll teach you a lesson and you'll never forget to make a Nandroid back up.
try and fix your market problem first, I say. Does gTalk run on your phone? if not, try creating a brand new google account, rerunning the setup app, and log in with that one. Let us know how it goes.
edit:I've seen this happen to more than one person, and it's on google's end, not yours if this is the case.

Want To Install A Rom

I rooted today, and I want to install damages rom. I've downloaded it, and I need some guidance. I have no idea where to go from here and don't see directions in the thread.
Anyone? eek! nervous
power off the phone
hold home and press the power button
let go of home when it vibrates
go to wipe..
wipe everything
go back to flash. flash the zip file.
reboot.
reboot takes forever.
what about a backup, should I run the nandroid backup and do a backup or a backup + ext I think it said or similar?
I want to make sure I can revert back to my 1.5 rom.
Do I also need to take all the damangecontrols zip file contents and put em on my sd card?

Good quick guide. They should all be so simple. Although I don't go the home/power way (unless adb isn't connecting). I use adb shell reboot recovery. Just my 2cents.

Yes, you need to nandroid. You only use nandroid+ext if you're using a2sd/apps2sd.
No, just put the zipfile on the SD card.
When you get into recovery (either the home+power on, or the adb shell reboot recovery method) AFTER doing your nandroid backup, then select 'flash zip from sd card' and select the ROM zipfile you put on the SD card.
KCarpenter's not kidding about the reboot. I've seen the first boot after installing DC's 2.0.8.1 take 15-30 minutes. So after flashing it, reboot and go take a shower or something.

Going from 2.x to 2.x yes. I never had any luck migrating those from 1.5 to 2.1. All I ever accomplished was a lot of Force Closes and problems, so I just said screw it and stopped trying.

Need URGENT help here ASAP.

So here's the thing. I made 2 Nandroids of my stock image before flashing a ParanoidAndroid 3.1 ROM today. However, I needed to quickly revert back to my stock ROM to check a few things. So, I reboot into CWM, wipe data, wipe cache, and wipe dalvik cache. I go to backup and restore, press restore and it isn't finding my Nandroid backups I made. It just says "Couldn't open directory. No files found". Even worse... if I try to just flash the ParanoidAndroid ROM, I can't, because it isn't showing up when I press "install zip from sdcard".
I've tried to go into mounts and storage to mount the sdcard but it doesn't do anything. I press mount sdcard and nothing happens. I'm trying to mount the sdcard to see if the Paranoid ROM is still there (which it should be, as I haven't moved anything). I have a sneaky suspicion it's something to do with the 0/ folder.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
you wiped /data
end of story. its all gone.
NEVER wipe data.....at most do a FACTORY RESET in your custom recovery. if you really went in and wiped DATA, then its all gone.

I didn't mean I wiped the data folder. I meant I pressed "wipe data/factory reset" in CWM seeing as this is what needs to be done when flashing a new ROM.
then what version of CWM are you on? make sure its the latest that understands the multi-user file structure

I'm currently on CWM v6.0.0.6. How do I go about installing the latest? I just downloaded the latest .img file but I'm not quite sure how to install it (this is the first device I've rooted and flashed).
edit: Ok, so here's the thing. For some reason, my nandroid backups of stock are located in sdcard/0/clockworkmod/backup/, but I see that the restore function of CWM reads the backups from sdcard/clockworkmod/. Of course, "mount sdcard" isn't working so I can't bring those backups into the right folder.

Thank you, but I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to stuff like this. How do I use adb? Will this enable me to view the contents of the storage of the Nexus 7?
You could also connect to your pc, and move the backup from there.
And you can use a toolkit to flash the image.

YOU CANNOT MOUNT SDCARD on a nexus device....there is no SDCARD
ADB will allow you to get a command prompt in the device and you can move files around there....
OR
like i said, UPDATE YOUR CWM USING FASTBOOT.....it will allow your recovery to see your backups and roms.....this isnt complicated, just follow the basic instructions.

I would suggest you to change the title of your OP for something that more explicit as " Cannot restore my backups with CWM" or "some problems with my recovery"
If you can accessed to your bootloader, you can try to flash a recent version of both recoveries..

But yet developers build the toolkits and post then in the development threads. And developers make flashable zips and use the aroma installer. TWRP put a graphical interface on recovery which was pretty easy to use already.
Do you chastise them with the same vigour as you do 'users'?
However, many people manage to make your same case without being so dismissive.

Why are you so angry/frustrated? Maybe take a break from Q&A if it bothers you so much. Don't put words in my mouth, and please don't talk down to me since you know nothing about me. I said nothing about 'approving of toolkits so much'. I simply pointed out that they are available and they are created by devs. I'm not some rookie here. I am on XDA multiple times a day. I've been here since before the rootzwiki split, so please don't feel the need to explain to me what is 'wrong' with XDA or with its members.
You told the OP to move on if they couldn't meet your pedantic expectations of how best to solve their problem. You have the same option to move on to someplace that better suits your needs/expectations.
I counter suggest that you ponder this. There is a whole organization of site admins and forum moderators with a legitimate mandate to do what you have taken on as your burden.
You have had your say, and I have had mine. I suggest that if further exchange is necessary it go to PM. I hope that this has not become personal for you. It hasn't for me.

[Q] Help! Spontaneously Bricked My Stock Nexus 4

Ok my battery was draining at a faster rate than normal so i figured I'd reboot my phone. Once I shut down my phone and hit the power button it boot into fastboot mode. I am literally the most basic Nexus 4 user meaning, I've never rooted, unlocked, flashed or done anything to my phone. I simply just don't know how to do any of this stuff so it's not like I was tinkering with anything.
I searched online and I went into recovery mode and tried to reset the phone and wipe the partition and it just reboots to the fastboot mode. I honestly have no clue what went wrong. Again, I know nothing about root and stuff but there must be a solution right or am I the first person to ever brick their completely stock phone by trying to restart it? I figure some of the awesome people on here what know what to do or to simplify some steps to fixing this. Thanks in advance.
Sounds like your volume down key might be stuck (as holding that when you power on is how you get to fastboot).
If it's not that then maybe you should try downloading the factory image from here: https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images and letting that install.
I don't think the button is stuck.
Your device needs to be in fastboot mode, with the bootloader unlocked. The relevant key combinations and commands are documented on the page about building for devices.
You need to uncompress each download before use, which creates a new directory for that exact download. That directory contains a ./flash-all.sh script, which handles the various operations, installs the necessary bootloader, baseband firmware(s), and operating system. Note that this operation deletes all user data by default.
After restoring a factory image, it is recommended that you lock the bootloader, for security reasons.

Being that you haven't unlocked or rooted the phone its most likely a hardware problem. If you bought it from Google RMA
From my BLACKED OUT N4
Before RMA'ing try the factory image. You don't need instructions, you just run a .bat file while in fastboot. What have you git to lose?
if you wiped your partitions, then you dont have a rom on your phone. flashing the factory img via fastboot would fix that.

I'm guessing he wiped data and/or cache. If he truly is stock like he says then he didn't wipe his /system partition.
My phone got messed up once and I couldn't make or restore nandroids nor boot past the CM boot image, and it ended up being because my /data partition got corrupted. No idea how. I had to flash stock Google images to get it to boot. it happened during normal use of the phone.

What rom do you want to flash on your device? You didn't told what rom you want to install, so don't blame me if I'm going to give you some bad instructions:
Ex. XePeleato's Lineage OS
1. Download it, of course
2. Install TWRP and Root: I don't know how to explain this, so here is a tutorial that I used every time when I wanted to root, and it worked 100% "But be sure to have all adb drivers installed, otherwise it may give errors.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=BurRlFSaCP0
3.After TWRP and Root are installed successfully, copy .zip file rom to your phone "It would be best if you have a SD Card bigger than 16GB to make TWRP backups on it and to copy roms to it.
4. Reboot to TWRP. "I reccomend just turning off the phone than restarting it, it has a bigger succes rate in bootin to TWRP. "After phone is completely off, hold Power+Vol. Up+Vol. Down at the same time"
Disclaimer: Release the power button and continue to hold the vol buttons until it boots to twrp, because if you hold keep pressing the power button the phone will restart continuously.
5. BACKUP! Highly Reccomended! Once booted up to TWRP, cilck on "backup" and be sure that everething is checked and(if you have sd card) be sure that is copying backup to External Storage, to not fill up internal stroage.
Disclaimer! Backuping may take a while, so grab some snacks and wait.
6. Wipe. Do not USE advanced wipe, Especially INTERNAL STROAGE, that will delete EVERYTHING what you have internal storage, and TWRP, so if you restart the phone after internal storage you will have no TWRP, so just stick to Normal Wipe and slide to wipe (takes 5 min.)
7. Install. After wiping, click install and it will prompt you to select the .zip rom file from a file manager. After you find the .zip file and click on it just slide to install.(takes 5-10 min.)
8.Restart and boot into your custom rom.
Disclaimer! All P8Lite Custom Roms are not stable and some things don't work. So,
9. Go back to emui. Boot back into TWRP, do a normal wipe, and click Restore. You will be prompted to select a backup. You will only have a backup, I don't think you need more than 1 backup, so select it, and slide to restore. (This thing take some time from 30 min to 1 hour, so just wait and be sure that your phone is plugged in and the battery does not die on you)
