Having been a very proud HTC Desire owner for almost a year, I upgraded a month ago to the Desire HD - at first I loved it, despite being massively larger it seemed like a superior device.
But now, a month on I'm charging the old Desire back up and preparing to transition back to it, in my opinion it is the best phone that HTC have produced and for me, the Desire HD just doesn't cut it due to the following:
- Reception quality: Awful compared to the Desire, from having full 'H' and '3G' within my house with the old desire, I'm left with barely 1 bar of 3G, and barely any GSM at all - I can't hold a phone conversation in my house anymore without going upstairs, even then signal is in/out.
- Call Volume: Despite having the volume at max for incall, its so poor that whilst in town or on a busy street, I just can't hear the caller
- Size: It's too big, I feel ridiculous holding it and I have big hands, it bulges from my pocket and is too big/heavy for my shirt pocket. Compared to the old Desire it feels like a brick
- Battery Life: Worse than the old Desire, even with the same config the battery life is far less than 1.5 days, compared to the 2 days of the old Desire.
- Data Speed: Whilst out and about, the old Desire is far more snappy whilst browsing the web, far more responsible.
- Notifications: Once a new SMS arrives, I view my inbox and read the SMS yet the notification doesn't self-acknowledge until I either 'Clear' it or click on it, very annoying.
The ONLY positives for me about this phone are it's DNLA support, I am hoping that I can get the 'Connected Media' on the old Desire somehow.
I hope this guide assists anyone else considering an upgrade from the old Desire to the new Desire HD - in my opinion it isn't an upgrade, its a downgrade.
Just charging up my old Desire last night and setting it up, it felt better already.
Regarding the Sms notification issue you mentioned, I've never experienced it. Are you on stock?
Anyways, the desire is a great phone.
Cheers from my DHD.

Never experienced any of these problems. I actually thought it was a significant upgrade from the Desire. I find the desire HD to be faster, smoother, better battery life (my desire had awful battery life, despite having a larger capacity) and the screen size is brilliant for everything (browsing, videos, gaming). Putting the desire and desire HD side by side, it wasn't that much bigger really.

I wouldn't call it a useless rant ... as I am currently trying to decide between the Desire HD and the iPhone 4. Posts from people telling me the downsides of each are far more use to me than simply saying "My device is fab!".
And no ... this has not turned me off going for the Desire HD but gives me more to think about.
I love my DHD
The best bits for me are the screen size, and the solid weight of the aluminium case. I know the plastic covers for battery and cards don't fit perfectly, but it just has a feel of real high tech, high quality construction. It's slim, so the size isn't an issue for me as it slips into a pocket nicely.
The speed and responsiveness is better than the Desire, and having a big phone means my big hands don't fumble through small screen icons, keyboards are easier to handle, and scrolling etc just work.
Sure the LED screen doesn't have the colour depth of my Desire, but that's a small price to pay. Satnav function is brilliant on the huge screen.
Plus, battery is much less of an issue now since the most recent updates, particularly the latest radio.
The Apps market is ever-expanding as well - the iphone concept is being overtaken at last!

Snap, gave the wife my old desire aswell haha, but she aint getting her mitts on the DHD for a long while yet
Well,it is both better and worse.
I am having trouble with se size in two situations:
1)When I'm in bed and have laid down,I cannot use it with one hand, the law of gravity steals it from me!
2)I cannot take it out of my pocket in class cause everyone will see it.
Seriously though,I just think it's an upgrade of everything the Desire had.Only thing I could do better with from the Desire is the screen(AMOLED,not size!).Battery life is comparable between the two, even when one is clocked @1190MHz and the other @1516MHz(guess which one is what ),but I charge it every night out of habit so I have no problem and usually have much battery juice left at night.
Fast?Responsive?Well, the iCrap's medal for smoothness and responsiveness is stolen and fast has got a new meaning now.Something must be wrong with your device OP!
And finally, when it comes to signal strength,I'll admit you are right. That was my first complaint when I got it.It was totally awful. But the newer radios sorted it out and it is the first phone I ever had that had full signal inside my house.Plus its wifi antenna is far superior!

Already got the DHD but I strongly second that.
IMHO this forum is about exchange of user help, ideas and views. Good or bad, lets keep it that way.
I simply love my DHD and the only issue i had with stock was battery life with no longer is an issue with all those custom roms.
i keep my 2g data constantly on do listen to radio 3-5 hours a day, play alot of angry birds and tank hero and other games as well.
Also do make and receive around an hour of calls.
Still i get an fair 28-34 hours of battery life, which in my opinion is quite good.
This phone really makes a smartphone experience worth for me.
I love my DHD.
The opening post was great the chap obviously has issues and he sees them clearly with 2 phones side by side. But DHD is fantastic no question. You just have to spend a little time to tweak it thru this forum to get the best out of it. Not really fair to complain about the size -its big but that was your choice My only real issue is the low in call volume - it simply sucks when you've got a little noise around you

As someone who also came from a Desire to a Desire HD, that seems a pretty fair summary. The Desire is an excellent general purpose smartphone that just works. The Desire HD is really a specialist smartphone. I wouldn't dream of recommending it to an ordinary user. It takes waaay too much work to get the HD running the way most people would need (using battery savers, etc.). But for the geek, like me, the HD can be coaxed to be an excellent (maybe the best) smartphone. I can understand why you went back. But I prefer the HD.
Tests on the web have shown the Desire and DHD have the same battery life. Something's wrong with your phone OP.
I have none of the problems you have, and as I am using my phone to read news and browse the web there is no way I could go back to one of the small screens.
Especially the small 3.5" iPhone screen is just good enough for some basic email and messaging, but if I want to use the web comfortably, the DHD it is.
And the size is just perfect for my pockets.
I think among other things the OP has the init bug. Namely the bad battery life (though imo anything greater than a day is a waste of space) and the laggy browsing. For the reception issues, I think we have enough discussions going on and on and on. Basicly if you want metal body you have to sacrifice some of the reception. Period. The size is something that I'm surprised he didn't expect from the moment he decided to buy the phone. The bigger screen is...bigger! What a surprise! The notification problem he is reporting is something that I haven't noticed and I think it might be caused by some third party software he installed. And maybe I live in an extraordinarily quiet place, but I never had any trouble hearing anyone I'm calling.

I am in debate between these two phones. No Desire, for it looks effing ugly.
Why do you guys like the Legend, are there any complaints?
OH.
How much did you pay to get your HTC Legend!?
I found a deal for $490 for the HTC legend!
Any good place where I can find it cheaper?
Legend was my first smartphone. I had a long hesitation between it and the desire but I can't regret my choice... my sister has the i3gs and the legend is really better although more difficult to use because I had some problems with album arts and wifi... don't worry I have resolved both by an app... what I love the most with my legend is holding a hard piece of beautiful metal.. the finish is the best I ve ever seen! Now concerning the x10: I don't really like the blue ui and the phone is too big and blocked to an old android for the rest of the year: legend is beautiful, extremely fast, compact and have a better autonomy due too its screen: smaller but definitively comfortable

Thanks that really helps!! How much and where did you get it? Anyone else?
Legend FTW
Got it from ashop.tv for 335 € (~$425).
But you wouldn't expect any other answer from user of a forum dedicated to the Legend? I like the design more
Do you had both phones in your hands at a local store already? That's imho very important.
Besides, X10 has still Android 1.6, and will officially updated to 2.1 not sooner than Q4/2010. I also like the Sense UI.
Legend! get the Legend
Legend is quietly briliant
The construction of the phone is next to perfect with 3 exceptions : first, sometimes in long conversation the edge of the device might inflict some discomfort to the ear (maybe i press it too much to the ear) and second, the removable part where you insert the sim card does not close up perfectly...must be around half milimiter. Last exception is the laudspeaker ... if u put the phone on a flat surface with the display facing the cealing...when the phone rings you probably miss around half of the ringing volume.
Software wise...the phone is pretty stable and fast, ocasionally there are some minor gliches with the wigits...i found that sometimes the HTC Calendar wigit does not show me my meetings on the month view unless i enter a particular day. This is resolved easy...just removing the wigit and installing it back.
I also found some problems with the bluetooth transfers. I own an HP 8710W mobile workstation and an Lenovo Thinkpad T500 and with both of em the trasfers often are a pain...i guess it must be the Android here, prolly on 2.2 version it will be improved.
Conclusion: coming back to the topic, these are just some minor problems regarding the headset...things i observed in about 2 weeks of usage....but compairing this peace of art with the ugly plastic Xperia X10 is just wrong. I troully belive SE has dropped the ball on their smarthphone producs begining with Xperia X1. Word of advice : just stay away from SE !
Hope this helps.
with the ongoing android updates scene & the developer community also moving away from the legend , i suggest you get a nexus one instead .... atleast if you are going to keep your phone for a longer time you will always have the latest android build (either from google or XDA).... but if you choose to stay away , then i suggest you skip the x10 & go for the legend
i went for the legend, however now i kinda wish i got the desire.
i went for the legend because it looks so nice however after playing with a desire in my local telstra store i think i probably should've gotten the desire as in real life its not that ugly at all.
a friend of mine got the x10 its not bad but i do miss the pinch zooming that i get on the legend but the bigger screen is very very nice. really it comes down to personally preference as they are both very good android handsets however the legend is a fair bit cheaper
Indeed....Desire/Nexus have the big screen and fast processor but it all comes down to how much you use the web browsing experience everyday...i mean i check some websites from time to time but only around 30 minutes a day. I gladly exchange that big screen of the Desire with the way more pocket friendliness and build quality of the Legend. Not to mention i pulled out 3 days of battery juice recently with moderated usage. It just fits great in my pocket !

brother same results for me only i am not using only 2g; my battery gives me 2d 18hrs thats after 2nd recharge from the time i bought phone. i also do negligible web browsing. only thing is all developers have got these big & fast phones so they wont pay attention to legend. but said that, even legend is not at all slow, so i think its only matter of time that some good developer like paul pay attention to legend; we will get super fast legend.
Ive been having this problem too. So many smartphones out there and I have been wanting to abandon WinMo and take the Android plunge.
What I have learned is the following: Go out and try the phones in a shop. I wasnt sure either. I was considering an X10 or HTC phone and 1 thing that made up my mind was the Sense interface. I didnt like the X10 navigation and feel. HTC is spot on.
Now my only issue is trying to decide between the Desire and Legend. I hit some small road blocks trying to order the Desire and now it becomes a real war in my brain (Legend or Desire).
But go and try it. Play with the devices. I think in the end it will come down to what feels better for you.

as an owner of the legend the only reason to get it over the desire is because it looks so damn nice
if looks dont matter then go for the desire its not that ugly and can be found for only a little more than the legend. its also not much bigger than the legend
personally as soon as htc come out with a phone that looks as good as the legend with the power of the desire or more then insta buy for me
i am sucker for sense, i purchased motorola milestone but had to return it within 10 days & bought legend; as i am old fan of hero. I have seen nexus but not in action. i dont think i can stand stock vanilla eclair, i love sense. so might as well try to get DESIRE in my opinion, but try to find out battery life as its a big screen
Thanks noobdeagle and everyone for the comments.
For me I find it all helpful. I will definitely be getting either a legend or Desire in the next week or so. I think it will now come down to who will give me the best deal locally for a contract renewal.
But one thing I can say for sure. HTC seems to be going the right direction with its newer phones. Plus I agree with you all out there the Sense definitely beats out SE take on Android. I am someone who knows nothing about Droid (being an Palm OS and then WinMo user his whole Smartphone life) and When I picked up the Legend or Desire, I have to say that HTC made it very user friendly and almost intuitive to use. When I picked up the X10 and played with it, I didnt have that feeling. Actually, I felt the opposite. It felt awkward and strange.
Definitely dont want to have that feeling when using a new OS.
So thanks all of you experienced Droid users out there for also helping us newbies.
Im looking at a legend to replace my ominia 2 (crap pone) in my opinion. And was trying to get a general feel for how ppl feel about it.
Im interested in seeing anything you've all got to say thanks in advance
based on my experience, legend is a good upgrade from my previous hero. i really like it, its very smooth and easy to use, since you came from omnia2, try the desire as well. they have the same screen size, resolution and screen. if you have money and want to replace your omnia2, desire is a better replacement. but i prefer the build quality of legend over the desire.
I have bought Desire for me, Hero for my bro...and...a very good friend of mine has a Legend...
The best choices for android phones will be desire and legend.
Legend's hardware is somehow weaker than Desire but it has better looks and uni-aluminium-body.
Desire has more powerful hardware but way uglier compared to Legend and has only plastic body.
I found it also hard to decide Legend or Desire, but finally I have decided to choose hardware over looks.
I recommend you to choose either Legend or Desire, it depends on how you will look at the phone...looks or performance....
Both of them are very recommendable to buy!
BTW : In my opinion, Legend does have better looks than Desire.
same here. i was suppose to buy desire but i got turned off due to its color and build. i have an hd2 and that is really business phone so i went for the legend due to its build quality. but desire has better specs and screen. so its really up to you.
I would definitely recommend Android.
I would not recommend Legend because of its poor reception quality and certain firmware bugs.
If I had to buy myself a phone now, I would probably go pure Android route - Nexus One or Motorola-sans-Blur.
Frankly speaking, though, I think there's currently no winner Android phone on the market - all have some quality issues or ugly custom interfaces.
As others have mentioned reception is not great. Where I live in Canada I had great reception on my BB Bold9000, however the legend is definitely lacking. I am also currently 8 feet from my WiFi and it only gets one or two bars... odd.
That being said, amazing build quality is part of the reason I was sold. Very snappy phone, although with a 600 mhz processor I was expecting lad especially with sense and have none.
I should mention GPS is very fast, at least for me.
I can only imagine the forthcoming Froyo update will help matters....

Frankly, i would not recommend this phone to ppl tht are 'adventurous' in delving deep into android. Yup, the body is great, the app is snappy, size is just right (atleast for me) for me to flip it around in one hand BUT the buttons CAN'T make it. The Power button, the Back button, Home button are just pure mechanical buttons and often needed to be use to navigate around. My Back button already sink down after just 2 month of usage. Do consider capacitive buttons phone.
Go desire, I had it 4 one weekend and it's the best phone I ever had, I hardly use my iPod Touch now. I also considered the legend but I like the style and the performance, even 4 reception, of the desire, better than the legend. And IMHO because it has better hardware it will last longer, and you'll be able to get more upgrades. Go desire, for less than 100€ more than the legend, I've got a phone which eats iPhones for breakfast ;-)

Its not worth 390€
I bought the Legend over 2 moths ago, and Im not satisfied.
The screen is not good outdoor. With black background wallpaper (to save battey life) I cant see icons. All I can see is just my fingerprints.
The battery is very poor. I have to charge my phone every 1-2days.
Cell reception isn't good either.
IMO right now theres no good phone on the market with the same size and OS.
I recommend you to wait 2-3 moths for someting better or wait until the price will drop to 300€ (if its possible)

i recommend you go to settings>sound & display>brightness and select Automatic brightness when outdorrs . this will change hhow it looks dramatically .
never had a problem with wallpaper affecting battery life .
the batteyr you would consider poor charging ever 1 to 2 days . compared to most phones out there the others need to be charged 1-2 times a day or on a continous charging plan .
call reception . i havent had a problem AT ALL not one dropped call or static / fuzzy sounding call . clear and sweet .
to the OP'er .
this phone is by far the ebst mobile i have ever had in my pocket .
in the last 6 months i hahve had the iphone , HD2 and now the Legend .
i love it and wouldnt trade it for anything at the moment .
but again . this is my opinion .
I recently weighed up the Desire/N1/Legend and I chose the legend for the following reasons:
I prefer the smaller screen size/smaller form factor. The Legend feels way more robust than the plastic desire/N1.
I get 2~3 days battery life on my Legend with my typical (albeit low) usage pattern.
In terms of speed, the Legend is quite quick and responsive, way better than my Voda Magic. I understand that the N1/Desire with the snapdragon will be potentially faster dealing with more apps at one time? But browsing the web etc, is more than fast enough, on wifi pages load in a second or two etc.

AMOLED screens are typically bad outdoors although I have not had any particularly bad experiences with this. So that is a valid complaint although everysingle review I read before I bought mine mentioned this so it is well documented.
Having a black wallpaper will not affect battery life either way. The screen is covered with glass so finger prints could be an issue though, again when my screen is on, I can't see any finger prints.
My legend doesn't get worse reception than my magic did, if anything it gets better reception but that is just my experience.
Phone manufacturers are almost unanimously moving towards larger 4" + screen phones so waiting 2-3 months will probably not help.

A black wallpaper affects batter life a lot.
You can read about it on swedroid
http://www.swedroid.se/batteritid-del-2-processorbelastning-och-skarmens-ljusstyrka
With a black wallpaper and 100% brightness the HTC desire's battery life was 15h 29m.
With a white wallpaper it was only 2h 57m.
It affects only AMOLED screens.
Thanks for the opinions guys, I ended up buying a legend and love it now. Just need to unload the 600$ paperweight that is my onmia II

Thanks for the link, I had heard similar rumors about my old HTC elf (obviously the elf does not have an amoled screen)which were debunked but I see I have been hasty in dismissing this. Now I just need to find version in english.
Also, maybe it's just me, but if I turn my legend's screen brightness up to 100%, it's so bright it hurts my eyes. I usually have it set just above the minimum setting or on Auto which is not so bad most of the time.
The best phone ive used (My first android) I already had topmodels from nokia s60,samsung s60, wm mobile, iphone 3gs and so on the legend rocks

Congratulations!! It is a great phone!!
I have had both of these phones for a while now, and have not noticed a huge speed difference between them. (The Hero can get bogged down briefly, but it is very infrequent. And I should say that my first Hero was not nearly as fast as my current one for some reason…)
In my opinion the most noticeable differences are:
Size, of course. My typing on the huge screen is far more accurate on the Evo because the keys are further apart - this is a welcome change for sure. The Evo still fits in pockets easily though, and does not feel much heavier than the Hero. The Evo does feel very solid and high quality though, for sure. And the Evo screen's resolution is superb: it makes the Hero screen look pixelated when looking closely.
I miss the trackball - the nav keys on the Evo are nowhere near as convenient.
Sound quality for calls on my Hero is very good, but the Evo sounds even better. Very loud and clear on both ends. (and each of these sounds way better then the Blackberries I have been using)
3g data throughput is about the same on these phones, and even though I am in the middle of LA, there is no 4g that I can detect. Lame considering the $10 premium.
Battery life has been very good on the Evo. Seems to last as long as my Hero – which is to say at least 24 hours in normal use. And the Evo loses only about 1% charge or less per hour when in standby! (I am not using the Mail app on either phone, because the POP function kills the battery in a few hours. Instead I use the gmail app and have it POP my outside mail accounts for me, and they are pushed to the phone by Google. Works just as well as POP, and the battery life improvement is *drastic.*)
In all I would say if you are happy with the Hero and do not intend to watch movies or do a lot of gaming on your phone, you might want to wait and see which other Android phones come to Sprint.
I would also say that if you are itching for a new large screen phone or if you type a lot, this Evo looks and feels aswesome, and at $200 it is a steal.
Nice review, but let the flame wars begin!

FLAME ON!!!!
so the hero is a old dude and the evo is a baby new and nice but still annoys you with its screams
I just cant see people comparing... This is like comparing a 2002 Benz to a 2010 Benz. Sure you can update the 2002 to run just as fast and smooth as the 2010, but in the end, the 2010 can be updated even more to run like a 2020....
Sorry, I just use cars as comparisons a lot. The only constant thing that I see people complain about the Evo is... screen size, and what do you know, every new smartphone coming out now is 4+ inches lol.

Well, the obvious reason for comparing is that a lot of people who have bought the Hero are considering the upgrade.
Thanks OP. I appreciate the insight. I like the sound of 1% battery drain per hour while sleeping but I am pretty content with my rooted Hero for now.

For the record, I am now getting better battery life out of the Evo! Hard to believe considering the screen size...
And I agree, this thing is large. But I am getting used to it, partly because the type on the screen is so much easier to read.
I love my Hero, as I still my exs!lol
Still doesnt make me wanna switch to the Evo.
My contract is up July 3rd. I was going to get the Evo, but if you say the speed is about the same then whats the point. I'd still rather have a N1 than the Evo.
the hero hasnt even been out for a year and people are already ditching it or talking about ditching it. the hero is still a badass phone. im keeping it till it breaks. and when it does break i'll get the latest and greatest phone cause i'll have all that money saved up and be laughing at the people who cant get it cause they blew all there money on a phone every 6 months.

Speed is not the same, but in practice there is not a big difference. Especially if your Hero is overclocked.
I say the main advantage is the huge screen - makes for much more comfortable reading, watching movies, sprint tv, games, etc. (I often strain to see the tiny type on the Hero screen - for example in the gmail app.) Also typing is much easier and more accurate on the big screen.
If you are not interested in a larger screen, keep your Hero.
So whats your first impressions guys?
Mine are:- (coming from nexus one)
Im missing my big coloured ball lol (although we do have a lil light on the desire z, it doesnt seem to flash to show missed calls, emails etc... only seems to flash when ringing & I cant figure out how to change this for other notifications).
Loving the keyboard
Loving the updated HTC Sense
I have the loose hinge prob, but for now its not a concern
It noticably 'speedier' that my nexus
Cant comment on battery life yet as only had for one day
HTC Sense.com is still a bit buggy (couldnt locate my phone, also couldnt sent a text message from online)
Screen is very nice (both in responsiveness & colour etc)
WIFI stronger than nexus one

Over in the G2 forums, they're working on getting this to work as a notification light (they're way ahead of us here on the DZ side).

This issue with the hinge is off-putting, read about it in some of the reviews before it was released so to hear it from an actual user of the production model is rather off-putting.
I've been using mine since this morning. Still getting used to the 4 row keyboard. Hinge is loose but ok. For now. Colours are less vibrant but more accurate than my Desire. Battery seems on A par.
It did start running A bit sluggish but I re booted and its fast again.

I picked up a DZ on the 3rd and I am surprised how heavy it feels, but that's not an issue. I came from an HTC Legend.
Things I am happy about:
- New HTC Sense has many new features (skins, htcsense.com, ring profiles, reorderable screens)
- Flash works surprisingly well, especially for games. Silky smooth in fullscreen.
- The keyboard is great. I was surprised that there's a tab key and a dedicated question-mark key.
- The camera app is greatly improved (compared to the Legend). Even supports 1-2 person automatic self-portraits.
- The screen is nice, it seems the same as my wife's Desire (minus Z), which is LCD version.
- Wifi signal is better than with the Legend
- The phone is more aesthetically pleasing in person than it is in images. I like it a lot, even if it is a bit plain-ish
- You can share multiple videos to facebook at once now! (I think, I didn't actually do it but it let me select multiple).
- I LOVE the HTC flashlight app, and the light on this phone amazes me.
Things I am iffy about or dislike:
- HTC Sense is still choppy in the apps list and in various HTC apps.
- The phone gets a little slow in things like Angry Birds. Every few seconds there's a stutter. It just doesn't seem as fast I was expecting coming from a 2.1 Legend.
- The keyboard and soft-key lights sometimes go out on me and flicker on and off as if the software doesn't know that I have the keyboard out and I am typing.
- Swype has to be turned off and on sometimes after using the hard keyboard. It juts doesn't put the words into the input boxes for some reason.
- The battery life so far is pretty bad. But I think I had too much going on.
- The camera photos seem dull compared to what I saw in the viewfinder immediately prior to taking the photo
- The speaker is not nearly as good as I was expecting, I was hoping it would be better than the Legends by a considerable margin.
- The HTC likes app seems pointless.
I am torn as to whether or not I want to use HTC sense. I wish I could pick and choose pieces of it. I'd completely ditch the app drawer, for example.

I came from a buggy Samsung Galaxy S and have been enjoying my HDZ for two and a half days now. Here are my impressions:
- Screen is nice but pales in comparison to the SGS.
- I am still getting used to the flip out keyboard. Swype remains my preferred input method.
- The hinge doesn't seem to be an issue for me, but then again, I don't use the keyboard all that much.
- Speed is very good. My Quadrant scores are in the mid 1500's, which is lower than my SGS, but it feels faster than my SGS ever did.
- Camera is very nice, although I haven't loaded the pics onto my PC yet to see the quality. I'm heading off on vacation next week, which will be the true test of the camera and camcorder functions.
- I also really like the flashlight utility - very simple and yet oh so functional.
- Sense UI took a little getting used to, and after about a day I switched back to LauncherPro.
- The phone still feels heavy to me, but at least there's some weight behind it when you beat iPhone users over the head
- The speaker is a letdown. It is very tinny and sounds hollow, even for the ringtone.
- I still press the touchpad as though it's a home button a lot, or press the home button instead of the menu button. This is most likely just getting used to the form factor compared to the SGS and I expect it will improve with time.
Overall, I like the phone quite a bit. It certainly doesn't have that sexy wow factor of the SGS or iPhone 4, but the utilitarian in me loves the speed, functionality and usability of the HDZ.

wow.. thats pretty bad :|
I got mine yesterday, and in general I'm rather disappointed.
The hinge is terrible - it opens by itself, and when I try and use it with the phone closed, the top half wobbles from side to side!
The weight is a bit more than I expected, and the keyboard is too wide for typing on with 2 hands. Maybe I have small hands compared to some, but I feel myself having to stretch my hands to reach certain keys.
The whole point in taking this phone was for the hardware keyboard - and I find myself not using it already!
I've just restored it all back to default, and then am away to place it back in its box and go back to my HD2! I'll maybe see about a Desire HD, but I'm more drawn towards a regular Desire as I think my HD2 was too big, and the Desire HD is a little bit bigger.
Had mine a couple of days (Desire Z purchased in the UK) and here are some impressions (coming from a nexus one):
-Screen is amazingly crisp, viewing angle of it is amazing, no loss of colour even looking at the screen from extreme angles
-Trackpad is very responsive, even more so than the ball on the N1
- New HTC sense is very pretty, much more customisable than my first experience of it on the Hero
- Oh god the boot times. For those of you who haven't done so yet - reboot your phone. Mine, even fully laden with apps shuts down in under 2 seconds and boots up in 2-3. The boot screen is there long enough for the startup sound to play, then the phone is 100% operational. Never seen such a fast boot on a smartphone.
- Aluminium is nice and even the plastic parts feel nice and sturdy
- Speaker is a little tinny, but as all i'll ever hear out of it are ringtones and notifications, not a massive issue
- Keyboard is hands down the best i've used on a mobile device (though I occasionally suffer from the aforementioned issue with the backlight being intermittent, it seems to be a rare occurrence)
- Seems faster and more responsive than my rooted and overclocked N1
- Side buttons are solid and easy to press, nice coming from an N1 with its slightly flaky power button
- The hinge. I have no issue with it and think it's a very well engineered solution to revealing the keyboard. While yes, if you pick the whole unit up by the screen or hold it upside down it flops a bit, I never hold my phone like this so it's a total non-issue. In standard use it has never opened or closed without me wanting it to. Perhaps it varies by region, as I haven't experienced the screen wobble while the hinge is closed either.
Overall exceedingly happy with it, without doubt the best qwerty handset i've ever used.
So I'm having a weird issue that I haven't been addressed yet. I have a review unit for my site, thecellularguru.com, as well as one I bought for myself because I loved it so much and wanted to use it on Rogers.
Both units have phantom screen touches where every once in a while the phone will become possessed and start selecting things randomly. I can sometimes make it stop by holding a finger down on the screen which seems to snap it out of its weirdness but it always comes back. One unit was barely functional so I returned it and the other one seems better but its quite disconcerting.
Anyone else had these problems?

okay so first how do you guys feel with it is it snappy can it run the new apps fast?
hows flash videos playing?
do you think htc will update it soon or is now a good time to get one?
with the 2.2 out hows flash video? generally dose it feel good?
also i can buy it at best buy for 350 plus i get a 100$ bestbuy card so 250
you think its a good buy or get a nexus one used/vibrant for 300?
You shouldn't buy a Legend if your aim is to run apps fast.
Adobe flash doesn't work on Legend, but official rom has Flash Lite from HTC.

Legend is a great phone. I really dislike big phones like the Nexus1, HTC Desire, iPhone, GalaxyS.
Legend fits the bill perfectly, it's got great build quality, it's pretty fast (600Mhz CPU), but it's GPU is faster than most high end phones, outperforming 1GHZ snapdragon phones for gaming and graphically intensive stuff.
For $250, it sounds like a great buy.

not really had the phone long enough to say about the legend calls.
I have never had the nexus but on paper its a better phone, but it will never look as nice as the legend. You have to choose between spec or design, and the nexus will more than likley get gingerbread
The battery can't hold a charge, the unibody design impairs getting signal in low reception areas, scrolling is jerky on almost everything, pinch to zoom is completely unusable and the camera is crap.
Don't do it man.
I get a day and a half on a charge with WiFi always on, so the battery is excellent. I never had any issues with pinch to zoom. The camera is very good imo. WiFi reception is very good as is GPS and cell signal. Call quality is excellent, as per the people I call. The music player does not have an eq, that is my only gripe. Oh, and the buttons below the screen seem cheap. But hey, for $250 its a great deal. you cant even get a new iphone 3Gs for that.
Pro: I like the legend's smaller physical size when I carry it in my pants pocket (which is always unless I'm using it). I have no problems with the battery -- I charge it every second or third night depending on how much I play with the phone. Of course if you use it a lot, you'll be charging it every night.
Con: The camera is the worst phone camera I've had[1] - everything that isn't staying perfectly still will get smudged, so it's not good for taking pictures at concerts or parties or of children. The aluminum edge along the top doesn't feel nice against my ear when talking on the phone. If you want to use the web a lot on the phone, you might want something with a higher resolution -- like the nexus one.
All in all, I'm not unhappy with my legend, and I have no plans for getting rid of it. Maybe when android phone cameras start beating the Nokia N8.
Personal recommendation: I'd invest the extra $70 to get the nexus one.
[1] Previous camera phones: SE k800i, Nokia N82.

I have to agree it is more than likley a bad phone mine is pretty decent as stock but things get a lot better once you get a custom rom and overclock it things get smoother but still not really a fast phone just reasonable. For me this phone is all about looks.
ive got a legend and regret it.
i was choosing between the desire and the legend and really wish i went the desire.
i chose the legend due to size but the desire is not much bigger and is much better. better cpu and bigger screen for surfing and apps. the keyboard is a little too cramped for my liking and i dont even have fat fingers.
the legend doesn't have enough storage for apps (yes 2.2 may fix this) plus the CPU can get bogged down and now for me the plastic cap on the bottom at the back is coming off so easily when i go to pull the phone out of my pocket. the plastic cap is the aerial, so when it is pulled off you lose reception.
i got my legend in april and i cant wait to upgrade to the nexus s in the coming months.

When the desire/legend was first release I got the desire then swaped it for a desire hd and now ended up buyin the legend as this was the 1 i really wanted but i went for spec over style and 3 fones later i finally have 1 and dont regret it 1 bit. well at least not yet as for the cpu gettin bogged down just use set cpu an it should be fine mine is running at 800MHz runs a lot better an smoother and now with data2ext the speed really shouldnt be an issue as far as the plastic cap goes you could always buy a new 1.
legend is a real smartphone compared to the others. they are more like pocket pc
we have great dev crew and ongoing skinning and modding
buy legend
