Hi. When listening to the radio (i9000, Darky's rom 9.0.2, been present before that, though) I hear quite a lot of static background pops during moments of silence (i.e. when there are people speaking and somebody thinks about an answer). I can hear them through the phone's loudspeaker as well, so it's not headphones' fault.
Do you have any idea what that might actually mean? I am afraid it might be hardware defect of some sort.
Can't tell if that's present when listening to audio from the phone's memory. Could someone please supply me with a music file with a song containing long moments of silence, or even better, an mp3 file with silence only?

Try disabling Wifi and check it it still happens
It's a problem with the printk's in the Kernel.
Doesn't help. When I tested previously WiFi was already disabled, this time I tried to disable 3G as well. No changes.
Is there any way to fix this?
PS
I see there's quite a lot going on in the Voodoo kernel thread about this:

New Hardcore Kernel seems to have fixed the crackling! Woot! Now there's only the static noise and the slight pops when "sound goes to stand-by" or however it is called left. You devs are all awesome.

Does Darky's 9.0.2 rom already have the newest Voodoo sound kernel version? Or is there something I can update to see if it helps?

Since it was released yesterday, it can't be included in Darky's rom. And this "debug logging" is connected with kernel's printk, no? Could it help? Maybe I should ping Darky to see if he will release an updated version of his ROM?
Actually, looks like Darky runs the newest Speedmod kernel:

I tried changing my kernel from Voodoo to Speedmod in Darky's Configuration App and rebooted, but it still hasn't changed.

Well yeah he disabled the Printk's to stop those pops.
I guess you have another problem, not quite sure what it is

How can I check if I am really running Speedmod kernel? Is changing it in Darky's app and rebooting really enough? I can't see any Speedmod kernel options in my recovery menu. Maybe the app doesn't change it and I still run Voodoo? How can I check it? Is there any way to quickly input something into the terminal emulator and boom, I now everything? (like uname -a in Linux)
I'm not so sure this is "printk()"-related - appending to an in-memory ring buffer, which is exactly what "printk()" does, really is not that expensive an operation. It sounds more like the buffer set aside for the sound card is too small, which introduces small gaps, pops and crackles. Disabling the radio (WiFi, GPRS/3G) has also never had any effect, for me, which leads me to believe it's actually driver-related.
TL;DR crowd: ****ty driver or below par ALSA configuration.
I installed speedmod kernel from here:
http://darky.ficeto.com/community/index.php?threads/kernel-speedmod.282/
But crackling is still persistent.
Do you actually believe it could be fixed? Driver issue would seem like a tough nut to crack. Will try to search for more info, though.
Just tried my own silence mp3 file created in Audacity, and guess what! Completely no crackling (tried with voodoo kernel)! What a bliss! It must be a radio-only issue. Will invastigate it a little bit more in the future, but right now I'm just happy my internal audio files would play with no issues.

Info in my sig. I was on a previous version of CM (4.2.12.2, iirc) and had no problems. It did run sluggish, but was guessing it was due to my class 2 sd card and using swap/ext/fat32 on it.
I repartitioned my card to all fat32 and loaded 4.2.13 yesterday. It runs much faster, much more responsive than before.
Now, when on a call, it sounds like it's breaking up, like I have bad signal every once in a while. When it would do it, I checked and had 3G and 3-4 bars. I was at my house, where I've never had problems before. This happened both with just the my3g and on a BT headset. Initially I thought it was where I was in the house, but it happened no matter where I went.
I searched and found a thread titled "Background noise" talking about improved call quality. I can't post a link because I'm a no0b, but here's the info, with attached filename Audio-mic-gain-fix.zip:

You can try this. It has improved my call quality a lot. Follow these instructions using terminal app.
*unzip the files using astro or file manager of your choice*
Open terminal emulator

Type - mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mtdblock0 /system
Type - mkdir /sdcard/mic
Type - cp /system/etc/* /sdcard/mic
Type - cp /sdcard/download/*.csv /system/etc/ (or whatever directory you unzipped to)

Are you rooted with a modified ROM? If so, many people have complained about poor call quality, distortion, etc. This file has fixed this problem in many cases. The *'s stand for 'files'. If you call out an * in a command it pulls all files in that directory. However, another example would be *.csv, which would only pull .csv files, or whatever file extension you put after the *. Sorry, hopefully that makes sense.

Since the file is named audio mic gain fix, it seems this is more for the mic gain, not the ear speaker.
Am I having the problem this is intended to fix?
Thx!
If you're having a problem with your ear piece (speaker), I don't think the mic-gain file will help with your situation. The mic-gain file was intended to improve call quality via the microphone. Some users were claiming that the people they were calling said they could hardly hear them or that there was distortion and background noise.
I don't believe there have been any reported issues with the ear piece using any Cyanogen ROMS, but I could be wrong. Sounds more like a hardware issue. One way to test is to downgrade to a previous ROM and see if you still have the issue. If so, more than likely, its a hardware problem.
Good luck!
That's kinda what I figured. I'll continue using it to see if I still have probs. If so, I'll try a different ROM.
thx for the infoz.
This might not help but I had the same problem when updating from 4.2.5 to 4.2.13. It was fine on 4.2.5 and had a little background noise frequently. But once I upgraded to 4.2.13 calls were horrible all the time, the person could barely hear me. I decided to do a warranty exchange and unrooted it. Calls were fine once I was on stock 1.6, still had some background noise but not on all calls.
Got my replacement the next day, rooted straight to 4.2.13 and had no problems cept for the background noises every now and then.
I have a MyTouch3G as well.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but are you saying that you exchanged your phone to fix your problem? I highly doubt that the Cyanogen ROM you had installed caused a hardware problem. Could have possibly caused a glitch if you didn't install it correctly. However, you should have just wiped everything and tried again. Or, if you were really feeling up to it, started from scratch by unrooting in fastboot with the SAPPIMG.nbh, then rooting again with the recovery image and ROM of your choice.
fwiw, I did a wipe, reformated the sdcard, and a fresh install of CM 4.2.13.
I have a feeling it was just poor reception at the time. I don't talk on the phone that often, but used it today for about 5 mins and it seemed fine. I was riding in a car and background noise was loud (my buddies arguing over steroids & McGwire, lol), but the guy on the other end had no probs hearing me.
Glad to hear you got it fixed.
Sorry, I guess that was out of context. That was @Weirdkid, stating that I didn't do an upgrade like he did. I haven't touched it since yesterday, I wanted to let roll to see how it plays out.

Not quite, I was already getting static every now and then even before root(I thought I could live with it). It was just a little glitch I guess and that pushed me to get an exchange. After the unroot and back to Donut, the glitch with all calls getting low quality was gone but still getting minor static noise every now and then(just like before). Sorry for the confusion.
Okay, so I continued to have poor call quality and 3 calls were dropped. I went back, did a full wipe, no swap/ext, and reloaded CM4.2.13 and had the exact same problems.
I decided to load Dwang's rom and no longer have the problem of dropped calls and/or poor call quality.

Yeah, I stopped using Cyan's ROM when the 4.2.10 release came out. Great ROM, just seemed to have increasing issues after 4.2.9. You should try the Super D rom. Fastest and most stable ROM I've run, hands down.

Thanks for the the recommendation, I was looking at that one, but haven't changed my SPL. No reason, just haven't ventured down that road yet.
I've been looking at the 10mb ram hack, searching for pros/cons, but just see people using it and no full explanation of it.
Is there any real benefit to it, and what does it actually do?

Not a problem. Also, if you have a mt3g, you don't need to upgrade your SPL to run the Super D rom. Aside from that, just make sure you have the correct radio, then do a full wipe and flash the ROM.
In regards to the 10mb ram hack, it definitely increases system speed and performance. So that would be your 'pro'. However, the ram hack is created by pulling 10mb of ram that would normally be used for graphical processes, and instead applies it to your operating system. The con would be a decrease in 3d game performance. So, if you play a lot of 3d games, then I wouldn't recommend the 10mb ram hack. If you don't, then use it. Currently, the only Super D rom you can download that doesn't have the ram hack is the 1.6.6 beta, which as of right now is fairly stable. However, If you are considering switching to this rom, just wait a couple days, the developer has announced that he is releasing the 1.7 stable version this week. I'm assuming he will have two separate downloads. One with the ram hack, and one without.
Btw, I didn't see your phone setup before my last post. You DO have the correct radio to run the Super D rom. So, all you have to do is a full wipe and flash the rom.
Nice! I forgot I was reading the page in the Dream/G1 section...I got this one how I like it, so I'll roll with it a few days and keep an eye out for Super D 1.7.
Hello XDA Gurus,
I am running Bionix-V 1.2 TW kernel 2.6.32.9 Baseband version T959UVKA5
I have applied the AOSP update as well as the ThinkDroid and WifiCalling updates.
I seem to be having problems with the call quality, I can hear fine but anyone i talk to says I sound very muffled, this is without the headset or Bluetooth...with the headset I hear echoes of my end of the conversation....
Any one have any ideas on what I can change to try to remedy this? Should I try a different radio or modem? I am pretty happy with this ROM, but not averse to putting a new one on .. Thanks very much for any suggestions

I went through the same thing before, not sure which rom, flashed so many, but I can say this, "The main feature on your device is Calling, and if thats not working properly than everything else doesnt matter cuz at the end of the day you'll still have a crappy phone" def try something different and address the issue with the devlpr and hopefully that gets fixed and you can flash the same rom again. Just my opinion
try flashing different modem. KA5 is the worst in terms of voice quality for me. I use KA7 or JK6 modem.
Ok let me start off by saying I am NOT a dev. I am just a normal guy who can ocasionally follow instructions off the internet. I was able to get MIUI for the i9000 booted on my Captivate. This MIUI rom is ported over from the Nexus.
All I did was followed the instructions from the MIUI thread in the i9000 forums:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=992251
Just subsitute the captivate equivalent files from CM7. After you do these steps and Flash MIUI Beta 3 it will install a i9000 kernel and modem. You will have to go after the initial steps and install a captivate CM7 Kernel and Modem.
I wont be updating this thread, because I don't have the time. If a Dev wants to streamline this more for the captivate please do. I just wanted to share some info on how I got the MIUI from the i9000 thread running on my captivate. Fill free to use this thread for any MIUI related banter that can further help this Rom run smoother on our phones.
what are the bugs?
like I said I wont be updating this thread at all. I just wanted to let some know that it is possible to get it working on the captivate. to get a full bug list you will either have to install the rom yourself and figure out or wait for someone to report a list. what I have seen so far though is ringtones, and autorotation. I haven't played with it too much, but I was able to fix the ringtone issue be using a rintone app from the market download a ringtone. Also I believe the i9000 thread has a what is and what isn't working list also.
For people who where begging for MIUI this looks to have allot more promise. And it is gingerbread. Have not tried it out yet
CM7
I installed it on my Captivate and its actually running pretty smoothly, in fact its actually pretty fast I haven't even seen any lag. I'm on beta 4.
Here is what works:
-Texting
-Wi-fi
-Browser
-SD cards
Not working:
-I'm having problems downloading apps from the market, they don't seem to be downloading but if download the app you want then reboot the phone the app will be successfully installed.
-The sound only works if you plug the headphones into the phone and when you do that the sound comes from the speaker and not the headphones, however if you plug the headphones only about half way in then the sound will come out of the headphones.
-The sound problem does have an effect with the phone calls because the person on the other line can hear you but you can't hear them on the account of the headphones not being plugged in.
-The back key and search key are not working I guess because its made for another phone but idk. The home key acts as a back key. The menu key works fine.
-If you want to auto-rotate the screen then you'll have to go to the notification bar and tap the auto-rotate icon to turn it on, it does not automatically do it when you turn your phone over.
That's all I got, idk if there is a setting for the sound problem or something but I can't get it to work properly.
Just wanted to tell you guys how much Miui was working on our cappys and hopefully it can be fully working rom in some time.

This looks promising. Don't most i9000 ROMs have these issues when installed as-is onto a Captivate? Seems like it could be ported over just like most other i9000 ROMs.
But then again I'm no dev, and I could be completely and terribly wrong.

I tried it yesterday, hence the reason for this thread lol, but didn't really like it. Went back to CM7 with launcherpro plus. I missed my LP Plus widgets too much.
lol im just suprised how this thread isnt that popular
It'll get more popular as things get sorted out with the ROM itself. I've been running it for the last couple days (since beta 2), and if you install the CM7 Captivate kernel and a compatible modem (I like JL3), it's really pretty stable. The apps don't see media files, and afaik there are still some SD card issues, but if you can get past those it's not that hard to use as a daily.

It was/is very much a daily driver since data/phone/wifi all work, I just didn't like the feel of it. It took me back to my iPhone days which started to scare me a bit. lol
Yep I think jl3 works the best, I now have the rom pretty much fully functional and I just installed another media player app so it could find my music. MIUI is really amazing looking
Eh it does look like the iphone kind of but I was just getting tired of all the same "looking" roms and wanted something different
Interesting. CM7 has been without a nightly for a few days, I'm up for something new
So once we get the i9000 version running, just go into odin and flash a CM7 captivate kernel/modem? That should fix all the i9000->captivate issues, correct?
i bought my nexus s last week and i updated to 2.3.4, unlocked the bootloader, rooted it, installed cwm and flashed matr1x. i have been getting complaints about the sound quality from my end from numerous callers and they are constantly asking me to repeat what i said. i have voodoo installed (comes with the matr1x kernel) so i thought it would sound BETTER than the stock kernel, which i actually didn't make calls with since i started messing with it as soon as i fully charged the phone.
what should i do? should i flash the stock rom and see how that kernel sounds? should i compare it with another nexus s if possible? anyway of getting rid of my muffled voice by adjusting voodoo's settings? is this a defect and should i exchange it?
I would flash stock and see if that helps. If so, add the custom stuff one by one and determine which is at fault.
If I flash the stock rom will it wipe my phone or just replace the unstock kernels and everything else? I just flashed to netcarchy 1.3.7 and I am getting the same complaints.
Backup and flash stock to start from scratch. Then make a call to see if it sounds clear or not. If the call is clear then you know some of your custom work was the culprit. If it is still not clear you might have a hardware issue.
If I flash the stock rom will it wipe my phone?
I have had these sorts of complaints while on stock and custom roms. What makes it more annoying is that it seems intermittent throughout calls.

yes. Even if it didn't, you'd want it to to clear out whatever customization might be causing your poor sound quality.
I think it's totally not related to Voodoo.
AFAIK, Voodoo sound driver will only improve the sound quality when using headphones on YOUR Nexus S so I don't see any reason why it will affect the sound quality on other people's phones.
One thing I can think of is you may have a problem with the microphone, have you try making a call using a headset? Is it the same as making calls directly from the phone?
There's an option in Voodoo Control to set the sensitivity of the mic, perhaps you can try different settings and see how things work.
I am having a very weird problem when i play music from the spotify app on my G900F. Every few songs the audio will completely spas out and make random electronic noises almost like what old dial up connections sounded like. I thought it may have been happening when i receive messages and the interference caused by that but it happens even when no messages are coming through.
It doesn't happen all the time, but enough for it to be very frustrating (every 3-4 songs). Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this?
