Hi!
I am now trying to implement admob ads in my android apps.
Test ads can be shown in the emulator properly in test mode.
However, when i disable test mode (remove the setTestDevice code) and try to display the live ads, no ads can be shown in both emulator & real device. In log can, a log claimed that there are no ads to be displayed.
In the admob screen, I found that the Fill rate is always 0%. I wonder is this the reason I got no ads to be displayed? If yes, how can i improve the fill rate?
Thanks!
hi, i just started using ads a few days ago and had the same problem, the app needs to be realeased and then used for a bit to increase the number of "requests" (a request is made everytime the program tries to access a new ad), once the # of request increases then the fill rate will increase (e.g. my one app was released friday and has had over 4,000 requests and the ad rate is about 57%). once the fillrate gets higher then you'll start seeing ads... you can go to the sites/apps section on admob (where it shows revenue and stuff) and go to your app and click "reporting", which gives you all the statistics of that app, the "impression" category tells you how many times ads actually showed up.
Thanks For your reply!
One more thing i want to know: does admob pay by impressions , or pay be clicks?
If only user clicks can generate revenue, then wt's the use of impressions?

Admob pays by clicks (at least in my case).
And as hyperbyteX stated, you need to release the app and wait a bit (depending on how popular it is) before you see any live ads.
Hope that helps
Im not sure I understand what you mean by what's the "use". Admob gives very detailed statistics about requests, impressions, CTR, eCPM and clicks. If you aren't interested in knowing those other fields, then ignore them. Most people are interested to see that kind of stuff though.
Impressions help you see how effective your Ads/ad placement is. Also sometimes Admod does not have any Ads to give to you(No one has bought ads that are targeted at you), thats why you don't always see ads.
HA~ I understand now~
Thanks for you guys' help~

Thank you that answered my question also because I have noticed that sometimes my app displays ads sometime not. Good to know that thats the reason.
Consider switching another Mobile Ad Network?
First time using Admob, I have the same problems like you. After do some research and try some other ad network, I recommend Adsota as an alternative. its eCPM is much better than Admob. It has quick and smooth payment. Work for IOS and Android and 100% Fill-rate. Adsota works better for me and I think It could work better for you. Give it a try.
You can find by googling "ads.appota".

I'm using admob to serve ad. My apps have several thousand of request each day. the fill rate is about 30- 50% . How to improve the situation?
Maybe it is caused by edited hostfile to block ads?

It can't be entirely down to that, my app has a "adblocker check" so that it doesn't open if the user is using an adblocker. Mine still only has a 50% fill rate.

Not kill, but I think it keeps Devs from making their apps free with ad support. And a lot of ROM devs add the ad blocking built in to the ROMs. Devs deserve to get paid for their work on apps. Be it ads or buying the apps. I think more devs will start severely limiting the free apps. Also, locking apps on phones that have ads blocked isn't a bad idea. I know I will be looking into that.

Now I use house ad to fill empty space. I was thinking to use google adsense to improve the situation. So I contact admob to ask for the criteria for adsense activaton. But they didn't reply me for exact number.

Probably best to switch out/test some new monetization partners.
You can find a list here: Thalamus.co
It's meant to be used more on the UA side, and we have average CPI + Install rates by genre/platform/country but can at least give you a sense of eCPMs and what they specialize in.
Hi guys...
I don't know where else to ask, so I thought maybe some of you guys could help me out.
A while ago I made a free2play online game, and published it on Play Market. After my game was gone frome the Top New Free chart, the downloads has dropped significantly, so I decided to advertise my app via AdMob.
After the game has been promoted to 40K users, I've had... 15 new downloads in total. I'm sure Google would not cheat, as there were lots of others that have promoted their apps this way. Also, the referral link I've been using is working fine as I checked it myself. But I decided to double-check and purchased 5000 banner-clicks from the guys that has an Android app with lots of users. And I've had 3 downloads out of that.
So I was wondering... Is it possible that due to some software, or locale, or hardware, or any other issues, something could prevent people from downloading my game over the refferal link? What could be those issues? Or is this a real conversion rate? If you had used AdMob, what conversion rate did you have?
Any suggestions are much appreciated.
I had a similarly bad experience on admob as well. I wouldn't advise promoting your app there unless you've got extra money to spare.
Also, I've realized that the type of ad you put on there will have an impact. If you choose their standard ad, you will get the benefit of double tap verification and avoid accidental clicks. If you put a custom ad, you will lose that safety feature because a single click will open up the referral link.
Try pay-per-install services
I have the same situation in Admob. My best experience was with AppBrain. You pay for installs not for clicks.
I got the same problem too but eventually solve it by switching from CPM to CPI. However, the incident made me wonder: "should I always depend on Admob?".
So I decide to combine several Ad networks. It works. And I realize something about Admob:
Pros: It is reliable and has huge users database. Admob is backed by Google - a prestigious corporation who tracks every steps of anyone who use its service.
Cons:
- Its eCPM is low (I don't know exactly why but everytime I try another Ad network, they outperform Admob in terms of eCPM. I guess that Admob know it has advantages over competitors when it comes to reputation and users database, so It charge advertisers and publishers more)
- Its ban users more frequently. (Some of my friends' accounts got banned because Google thinks they was cheating, while infact he didn't. It was very difficult for him to reach Google support to recover his accounts).
after combining Admob and with Airpush, Leadbolt, StartApp, ChartBoost, I end up with Adsota - a lesser known ad network. Adsota is an has much higher eCPM, 100% fill-rate, and swift payment, various advertisng forms. You can find it by googling "ads.appota".

Hello everybody.
I'm a noob. As stated by the video that I saw when registering Hope to be not banned for my very first message
I develop Android apps since about 6 months. I've been including simple banner ads by AdMob in the first months, then I decided to multiply my ads because of the very low earnings I get.
AdMob gives me as low as 6$/day for 7 apps that have summed over 100.000 downloads. It does not look very fair.
Then, I decided to add interstitials and appwalls by LeadBolt. Appwalls are intended to be only on user-request (so triggered by a button or a menu) while interstitials appear on their own in certain fair moments of the life cycle of the app.
At the beginning it appeared to me that I would have at least doubled the AdMob earnings, but after few days the earnings by LeadBolt have gone lower and lower. Now I earn a misery like 1$/2$ per day and users start complaining about too much ads.
What is incredible to me is that I very often see hundreds of clicks, thousands of impressions, and zero earnings. Not just LOW, but zero!
I talked with the (very present and very quick) LeadBolt service trying to understand why earnings are so low and why they oscillate so much. And why should I sell clicks for 0$... what kind of bid is that?
I had very techincal explanation that frankly did not convince me (or maybe I did not understand them). Anyway the problem remains.
I am putting my work in bad light to my users for what it appeared to be 10$-20$ and turn out to be 1$/day, and I give clicks away for nothing.
Still, everywhere I read about LeadBolt as one of the most profitable, if not the best, ad network out there.
Anyone had this kind of problem with LB? Anyone could suggest me?
Talking about other networks, currently I am valutating to add StartApp for searchicons and AirPush for push ads, do you think that it's a good choice? Should I use AdMob mediation also, or LunarAds, or is it just a waste of time?
Thanks for all to all.

Using push ads you risk to get a lot of bad reviews and some antivirus app thinks that it is malware.
I wanna to know what is the best AdNetwork too.
This is not good new's, i just started using leadbolt as i heard a lot of good stuff about them aswell! Keep us updated as i'm interested to see if things pick up for you with them.

In Leadbolt, advertising inventory is a combination of Cost Per Click (CPC), Cost Per Install (CPI) and Cost Per Action (CPA) ads. CPC ads will earn revenue as soon as the ad is clicked by the user. However, CPA/ CPI ads are paid on the basis of a conversion, which varies based on the ad type, but can include installing an app, calling a phone number etc.
If a CPA/ CPI ad receives a click, but there is not a conversion (for example, the advertised app install ad is clicked on, but the user does not install the app) then LeadBolt does not earn revenue and revenue will not be added to your account. If your account has registered clicks, but is not yet receiving any revenue, it is most likely that the user has clicked on a CPA ad, but did not complete required action to indicate a conversion, such as installing an app.
With Leadbolt model, I think we must have huge of requests and clicks from user, then we can get revenue! You should try Airpush Smart Wall, in my case it's better than Leadbolt!
Leadbolt has low eCPM for me too.
Use Admob of MobFox instead.

This behaviour is known as malware.
Lookout Security & Antivirus found mine in ChargeBar Free Edition,
ChargeBar came embedded in the NottachTrix 2.3.0 ROM.
I installed it (NottachTrix) and it (ChargeBar) didn't update for 3 months, then, BANG.
I've deleted ChargeBar's update, moved it from system apps to apps, deleted it, and the browser pop open 'ad.leadboltads.net' still persists.
Lookout Security & Antivirus can not find the new location of the malware, they do not have a forum.
By the very definition and behaviour, this is malware, and, ChargeBar (Asgard Casino Apps) is involved in the distribution of malware.
Asgard Casino Apps distributes 34 apps that behave this way.
They are using Google Play Store to distribute this malware, abet, that app is benign in its origin, its a pipeline, or conduit for malware.

Leadbolt offers mostly CPI ads, whereas AdMob CPC ads. The difference between CPI and CPC ads is that in the former that user has to click and install the app!
Hi,
first of all, if I can convince you to try out StartApp, Mod Edit: Link Removed
» StartApp FAQ
Well then, let's start. As I already announced here, I am currently trying out a new ad network for one of my apps. The network is called "StartApp". And although it is a little bit more intrusive than AdMob and not every user is going to like it, I am, however, already yet pretty satisfied with its results. In just two days I earned now more than $13 - which might not sound like a lot for some of you, but for me it actually it is quite much. Because in comparison to AdMob it's around 20 times more!
But simply look yourself:
» With AdMob banner ads I earned around $10 in the last 30 days.
» And now my StartApp earnings from just the last two days: $13.34.
(Well, of course, that were just two days, we will see, if this will hold on in the future.)
So how does StartApp actually work? Basically, there are two ways to earn money with StartApp.
1st Way: SDK Integration
Regarding of which option you choose (full integration / partial integration), with this way you will earn money for each installation of your app. I will simply quote the FAQ:
Our payment is based on number of app downloads; you get paid for each download generated with our SDK inside. There are 2 integration levels available: Full and Partial. The amount of payment depends on the integration level you choose. For full integration, we pay $0.055 for each new U.S install , $0.01 for each new install from any other country. For partial integration, we pay $0.04 for new U.S installs and $0.008 for new installs from any other country. A new user would be a user who's device does not have the StartApp SDK present. A returning user (with the StartApp SDK on his device) will grant you $0.01 each from the US and $0.005 for all other countries for both full and partial integration.
Click to collapse
2nd Way: Popup (Exit) Ads
I will simply quote the blog:
The Exit Ad introduces StartApp developers to the rev share model, providing continuous income and great eCPM, all while keeping the seamless user experience that users expect and value.
The exit ad will display a full screen banner ad when the user exits the application, intruding minimally on the user experience of your app. When the user clicks the back button or the home button on their device to exit the application, they are presented with an ad that leads to a mobile website or a free app download when clicked. If they click “Not Now” the app will exit as normal.
Click to collapse
Please note that you can also add those popup ads to other points of your app, e.g. "natural breaking points" (like a user saves a file or loads a game level and while the file is being saved or the game level is loaded, he cannot do anything anyway - so why not showing him a popup add now?).
(3rd Way: Referral Program)
You'll get $10, for the first 100 downloads a developer who was referred by you makes. The referred developer himself gets a bonus of $25 if he crosses this 100 downloads (that bonus is only for those being referred!). And afterwards, it even goes on: For every other of the following download-levels being crossed by the referred developer, you’ll get an extra payment:
- At 1,000 downloads + $25
- At 10,000 downloads +150
- At 100,000 downloads +$500
- At 1,000,000 downloads +$1,500
So summing it all up, you can make up to $2,185 for each referred developer. Therefore here again my appeal to you: Mod Edit: Link Removed Give it a try. It's a win-win-situation.

It sounds good, but the way they seem to work it is super intrusive.

How does it actually work?
We will supply you a SDK (including a step by step implementation guide). Integrating our product takes about 3 minutes! Once implemented, update your app on the market and add our disclaimer text to your app description. We are very focused on maintaining transparency, so it's highly important you let your users know about us. Your user will then get a search icon on his home screen, a bookmark link and a browser home page, all directing to our web search URL.

i'd rather see ads, than have an app change my browser start page and add search icons.
Plus the permissions are kind of rough. System tools and read messages are hard for most people to accept.
Well, yes and no. You can decide to offer the user a clean app without any ads, but instead you include this shortcuts and bookmarks installation procedure. The user can easily decline this dialog (I think he has to do it 3 or 4 times until it stops appearing anymore):
In my opinion, this dialog is quite transparent and clear to the user. If he (accidently or deliberately) chose to accept this dialog, he can afterwards easily delete the bookmarks and shortcuts (drag to the trash or delete the link for the browser). After all, your users are going to have a completely ad-free app. In my opinion it is not that intrusive, since StartApp does not "settle into the system" or something.
You can also choose to only use those exit-popup-ads. I cannot say how much you can earn with them yet and if it is really more than with AdMob. But you can give it a try, especially they could be useful while loading a game level or saving a file or something (as explained above). The user might be more willing to look at those ads if he cannot do anything else at the moment anyway. That might be a cleaner solution than those AdMob ads, on which the user clicks accidently while playing a game, because the controls are next to the banner or something.
Concerning the permissions, here you can find an explanation. What do you mean by "read messages"? There is no permission needed to read SMS or something.
Personally, I decided to give StartApp a try, because AdMob's eCPM was somehow unexpectedly low (much lower than for other apps from me). Also, many, many stupid people installed my app (which is for ROOTED PHONES ONLY) and rated it negatively because "it does not work ('****', 'crap', '**** you', ...)". I certainly do not have pity on those who cannot even read...

Is the one they install different from that one? also, system tools does show up in the play store descriptions, so they need to update where they say it doesnt.
Other than that it sounds interesting. The money you are currently getting from them includes the search combo, or is it just the interstitial(Exit) ads?
I like interstitials for some situations. and it seems so far for you they are paying out better than admob.

Out of ideas- Startapp truly has a very non obtrusive solution to monetize your apps and users accept this concept as it is much more friendlier than push notifications or even banners which appear from nowhere anf interrupt the usage of the app. Regarding the quick search you saw from their website it is identical to the one that will appear via the installation of your app. Bear in mind. that as Null0R has mentioned above, Startapp is 100% compliant with Google's policy, meaning the user can choose whether to accept or decline this addition, and it wont affect the installation of your app.
If you need and examples of apps using Startapp's SDK let me know.

The very main part of the money I currently earn (still always around $8 - $10 per day) from StartApp definitely results from the SDK integration itself (bookmarks, search icon, ...). Currently, I earn only around $0.1 - $0.2 per day from interstitial ads. Thats not really impressive, but it still can concete with AdMob I guess (since my AdMob revenue never was really a lot higher on the same app I think). On the StartApp dashboard it says, my eCPM is $0.16. In AdMob, I always had around $0.07 eCPM. Paradoxically, my AdMob-eCPM raised since I integrated StartApp (I now have those two ad networks in one app). Now it is $0.10.
Like you, I also wanted know how many they actually pay for interstitial ads. The answer, however, was not really that concrete.
The advertisements that are shown on the exit ads earn various amounts due to the different agreements that we have with the advertiser. Depending on what advertisements are shown we help you out by calculating a eCPM for you. You are able to use this to compare the payment amounts between other ad networks.

Here they also say:
RevShare- StartApp will share a percentage earned from these advertisements with you. Payments are sent every month in a NET30 terms (30 days after the end of the payment period). Your Ecpm is easily visible in portal. The eCPM may change depending on various parameters.
[...]

I think, this permission is not part of the requirements of the StartApp SDK. Rather the app itself needs to read messages, since it is a search app and you can search through your contacts, your messages, your apps and so on with it. At least, this would be my guess. You can check out my app's permission requirements: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.felixheller.sharedprefseditor (writing to sd card, however, is not part of the StartApp requirements).
For those who are being interested, I am willing to share my StartApp stats after one week of usage.
So basically, I earned $56 in a week with StartApp. This really is a lot in my opinion. When I started with AdMob, I needed around 9 months until I reached my first $100 (until my first payout). How it seems like I need around two weeks with StartApp. So this is a quite dramatic improvement, I think, everybody noticed that on his own, huh?

Oh yeah, I get stupid comments as well. Few of them stated, that they actually do like the app, but that they do not like the new permissions and thus they won't update. They like the app. They rate it with one star. Logic.
Today I got the first time a "virus-comment" as well. Well, I try to deal with it. I always try to give friendly answers to stupid comments. I try to explain the permissions and why I chose to use something different than AdMob. You should also add StartApp's disclaimer to your app description (you actually have to):
We love creating apps, and want to keep them free forever. In order to keep our development running we are using a search service to generate some revenue from this free app. This app will add a couple search links on your device in the form of an icon, bookmark link and browser homepage. I use startapp in my app and yesterday XDA wrote article about my app:
http://www.xda-developers.com/android/easily-backup-your-apps-data-contacts-and-messages/
After few users reoprted my app as virus or malware, article about my app was updated and now it says that my app contains a malware.
If anyone going to be promoted by XDA portal don't use startapp

ouch. thats a rough way to lose the "portal bump" and definetly makes it rough to recover from.
I've seen quite a few different apps using startapp being reported as viruses(even if they are not) and nothing kills a good rating faster than that.
Everyone ends up having to makes a bunch of apology follow ups and ends up dumping startapp.
So, not to seem rude or anything, but I don't think this is a good monetization solution for developers.
Well, I have removed startapp from my app. At least now we know that XDA don't allow apps with this kind of ad networks .
It is not a good monetization solution for developers - your app is marked as virus.
I will never use aggressive ads network in the future that mark your app as virus.

"Fake-virus reviews"? I don't understand you. How do you mean this?

In my case Leadbolt was generating fake-virus reviews. I got tons of bad reviews complaining that my app was infected. However, this happened only to one of my apps.

Hi,
I cannot tell you a lot about that yet. International transfers take some time for sure. Today is the 13th August and I still did not receive any earnings, too - neither from StartApp nor from AdMob. But at the moment, that does not seem to be a thing to be worried about in my opinion. Because my first AdMob payout also took about 19 days (19th February). I will simply wait another week and wach out.
Although my referral links were removed (sorry 'bout that, didn't notice that rule and others posted referral links as well on other topics...), I still wanted to share my most recent experiences with you anyways. So here it is.
My earnings are still quite high. I earn about $12-$13 every day with only one app using StartApp. That's cool. I didn't change anything on my apps since I introduced StartApp.
On the other hand, my ratings of this one app are still going down slowly (including some false virus reports as well). That's stupid. But at the moment that's not a big enough reason to cancel this "StartApp experiment" in my opinion. I'll just wait a bit further, I guess. Maybe I could also write the StartApp support and ask them what to do about those virus reports and negative ratings and if they have some tips or something.

Hey,
I am happy to hear your earnings are still high, there shouldn't be a reason they wont be
Here is what Startapp support answered: " Thank you for letting us know about this feedback from your users about messages from their anti-virus software.
We encountered several AV apps that have mis-flagged our SDK as Adware.
After working with with most of these companies, we now have only Dr. Web, AVG and Norton and a few others that are still flagging us as ad ware.
Our latest SDK offers an opt-in EULA for the end user, giving them the choice to add our search app. This user-friendly approach is a step forward to keeping your users aware and creating a long term business that will keep us and you, the developer, earning for the long run. We take the privacy of you and your users very seriously.
Some developers have also posted a message in their description letting users know that it may be flagged as a virus, but that it is not a virus
I hope this answers your question. If you have any more concerns, please let me know."
In addition, Google chose to present its "Disclosure of Ads to Users" using Startapp's EULA as an example of how to be transparent towards the end user.
Of course this doesn't change all anti viruses diagnostics but it does show that Google finds Startapp solution as very user friendly
Hope this helps
hello friends,
i use admob for for my apps(for oonetization), which is my second app
i was using only banner ads in the starting, while using that,i only used to get $1-$2 per day only..
then i added interstitial ads also in the same app.after that revenue increased to $10 per day!!
i want to know is this normal?
my ecpm - $0.33
fill rate -99.71%
ctr -0.46, most of my ad clicks and downlaods are from US.does this affect this?
thanks in advance

It's normal on any ad network for interstitials to perform better than banners. I would recommend avoiding a banners-only approach for almost all apps. Here's some stats from AppFlood.
In this experiment, the blogger did the math for a CPC campaign with a $0.3 bid and a CPI campaign with a $3.00 bid, both based on 100,000 impressions. For the CPC campaign, banner ads earned $9.60 and interstitials earned $1,024.40. That's huge! And in the CPI campaign banners earned nothing and interstitials earned $96.
Then check out AppFlood's August click-through-rates, 0.23% for banners and 5.70% for interstitials.
AppFlood also has some other nice ad formats like app lists and panels, and rich media is on its way soon. Hope that clears it up!

Hi,
This is normal as ecpm is higher with Admob interstitials (but fill rate is lower), US clicks have a very good ecpm, all this explains why you get that, Don't forget the effect of increasing number of users that will bring more revenue too. I recommend you using mediation with other ad networks like MMedia or InMobi
wow.. that's great.. I don't have a good experience using interstitial.. my uninstall rate is higher since using interstitial.. so, I'm just using banner for my prospecting top apps now
You just need to be careful with the interstitials. If you show them too often, or at an annoying time for the user then your uninstall rate will obviously increase. On exit is probably the least intrusive, and limit the number shown to a max of one or two a session.

On exit is a pretty bad idea, although many devs fall for this. It will result in a very low CTR and is actually against the AdMob TOS:
Do not place interstitial ads on app load and when exiting apps as interstitials should only be placed in between pages of app content.

We tested over 30 different ad provider and mediation networks and can say Appodeal
is by far the best monetization plattform with the highest revenue and fillrates.
Take a look at our stats from the last days:
The eCPM is ALWAYS between $ 10 and $ 30! Thats the highest eCPM we've ever seen.
The SDK is very easy to integrate! Appodeal serve ads based on revenue.
See the stats. There is nothing more to say

Have heard great things about Appodeal.
It is normal
I think the increase is reasonable
- Interstitial ads are always known to be more effective in reaching the customers and calling to their actions (download or install). So by using it, you actually gets more downloads for the advertisers, which bring you more money. However, Interstitial ads are also known to be intrusive if used carelessly. It may harm the user experience in a long run. So be mindful with that.
- Your app can be good and it attracts users gradually. --> more people exposed to your app.
However, I recommend that you use several mobile ads network at a time to maximize your revenue.
I have tried using Adsota, Appstart, Revmob, Airpush and only adsota seems to work well for me. ITs eCPM is decent, quick and smooth SDK integration, quick payment. You will earn more with it. You can find by googling "ads.appota"
Best of luck.
