[Q] Universal E-Reader - Android Software Development

Does anyone know if a Reader app exists that will allow you to connect to nook, Kindle, GBooks, etc stores with only one app instead of having six or seven different 'libraries'?

Callibre and Non Drm on Nook Simple Touch.

1st of all i am not US resident. One of my releatives is going to buy Nook touch register it and then send it to me. So buying is out of the question.
Obviously i won't be able to shop. So my qustion is that does Nook simple touch will be able to read other books(meaning downloaded from other sites) and will i be able to use Calibre. i am asking coz on the wiki page of Nook simple touch says. It doesn't support Calibre.
So you think, it will work with many books available on internet.
you can check wiki page of nook touch
thank u very very much.
Yes: The Nook2 is supported by Calibre
Yes: Nook2 will work with most e-books available
Being a non-US citizen myself I'm buying most of my books from Kobobooks, no problems at all.
BTW, buying and registering a Nook2 as a non-US citizen is not a problem.
Buying e-books from B&N is another matter tho..
@ron87
thank u very much.
i guess its a go now.
Calibre works fine. I'm also in Canada here and had no problem with the Nook. I registered it myself, and can download free Nook books. I also buy my books primarily from Kobo. The Kobo app doesn't work though. If you don't want to use Adobe Digital Editions to transfer your DRM books, what I do is this.
1: Download and install Alidiko
2: Register Aldiko with your Adobe ID
3: Go to Kobobooks.com with your non stock browser
4: Find the book, and click to download the ePub. It won't give you the ePub but some DRM file that's meant to be opened in Adobe Digital Editions.
5: Choose to open that file with Aldiko, and blamo your DRM book will download.
You'll have to use Aldiko to read it.

No, you can install whatever you want on your rooted N2
But, you do need to be inside the US (IP-wise) and have a US credit card if you want to buy e-books from B&N.
That's not a big deal tho, most of us just get them elsewhere. I buy most of mine from KoboBooks.

Are Aldiko and other ePub apps available?

Are Aldiko and other ePub apps that are in the regular Amazon App Store still available on the Kindle Fire(actually in the store, I'm aware it can be sideloaded)?
Aldiko is in the app store but doesn't show as compatible with the Fire. I'm sure if you had the apk you'd be fine.
As far as available non-sideloading epub apps, there's a commercial app called Mantano but it's $7.49. Good reviews though.
And of course you could always just convert your stuff using Calibre for free.
I've installed MoonReader+ via the Android Pit app. I'd guess the free version would load also.

I have a followup question on ePubs (I did not want to open up a new thread).
Using Calibre is not an option. I need to get ePubs to be easily accessible on the Fire without rooting (sideloading is an option). This is for someone who basically has no technical skills whatsoever and it needs to be ... ready for the cliched phrase?..."easy as pie".
I can do the setup/sideloading, but they need to be able to go on websites, download the ePub, know where it is, and hopefully in either an app or a file manager one-click and its opened.
They aren't books, they are small documents.
I tried to sideload Aldiko, and yes it does open ePubs, BUT you have to manually import them each time. (It would be ideal if there is an app that automatically scans your internal storage and just "puts" the ePub file out in the open to select -- kind of likeezPDF does with pdf's).
I am really trying to get this to work for them because they are an Apple family and will most likely will turn to an iPad.... (alternatively, I may recommend the Nook Tablet which I believe natively supports pdf).
If there is a stable ROM that doesn't required constant updates/maintenance, I MIGHT be willing to consider that if it means having access to the Android Market and making the ePub thing alot easier.
Any feedback appreciated here!
moon reader opens directly - but the handling is a little bit complicated
take a look by yourself - it's on the market
Eddog4DROID, an easy thing I'd recommend is getting the 'Overdrive Media Console' app from the market, free (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.overdrive.mobile.android.mediaconsole).
If you borrow books from any public library in ePub format, they download directly through that app.
Also, if you have any ePub format files on your SD card (like your own books) you can probably save them on the Overdrive folder and open them (not sure though, haven't tried).
Here's a FAQ about the app in case you want to give it a try (http://www.overdrive.com/Software/OMC/faq.aspx).
Let us know how it goes if you try it.

get mantano reader https://market.android.com/search?q=mantano&c=apps
haven't really tried the Trial but I paid for the full software and I love it. Every book you have on fire (even pdf) will be sorted by author, Title, Series etc. in the Mantano Reader. It has also TTS so it reads your books for you if you want.
Aldiko does work for stock Fire. I use it all the time for reading scientific papers. For whatever reason, I had to grab the APK directly from their website; backing up the APK I had on my Droid X didn't work.
My first post, and I was able to supply an answer rather than ask a noob question.
Aldiko was very sluggish on my Fire, I went back to using the Kindle app from the Market. If the books I have/get are in epub format I either use Calibre to convert them or one of the free online converters.
Can Aldiko be setup the ePubs are automatically imported and shows up when the app starts?

so far as i know - NO
correct me if i'm wrong
Not sure Overdrive is what I need. These are custom ePubs that are not books from Libraries. Thanks for the feedback though.
Again, just want to download ePubs from a website and have a quick way to open them.

as i said some posts ago: moon reader - nothing for you ?
Wow. Moon Reader. I over looked it but work great! Going with that one. It freezes up sometimes but well see... thanks again

FB reader for the win.. you will have to dl apk and side load. But from what I have seen on other devices this is the fastest and most reliable epub reader ive seen.
also a note Though I have not used this on the KF yet. I did notice some notes in the latest patch that are kindle related... so the dev has KF in mind..
I have ALDIKO on my kf.. its my usual go to reader though I think its sloppy and sluggish it does have a nice overal design. and I dont mind the import feature.. '
I like kobo myself

[Q] Looking For the B&N Nook reader app

Hi I'm new to the forums. I have a rooted Nook Color with CM7 (v.7.2). I am currently using Aldiko to read ePub books but would like a few more options. I remember when I rooted my Nook before it still had the Nook Book reader that was built into the original OS. It had a lot more options or presets like fonts and paper background. Does anyone know or can point me in the right direction to get this app on my CM7 Nook.
I have looked on the net for a while to no avail. I could find the Nook App which is B&N version of Kindle but it's not available in the UK.
Any help would be great.
Thanks
There is no option to run the stock app under CM7. The Nook app in the Android Market is the only option. Also, the market app is not a B&N version of the Kindle. They are completely separate apps in the market. Is this what you want then? http://www.mediafire.com/?wr4w53d735rb0w4
If not, just google Nook android reader 3.0.1.10 apk
Hi thanks for the quick reply. I downloaded the apk for the nook reader 3.0.1.10. Not sure if this is what I'm after (haven't checked as I need an internet connection to log in first of all on the app). It was the stock book reader that was on the Nook menu on the stock Nook 1.0.
I will try the app you suggested and report back once I connect to Wifi. Maybe B&N have incorporated the features I want in their app on market.
Do you know off hand if it can open your own ePub books and other formats (i.e. books you've not bought/got through the B&N store?

Rooted NST with Kobo Desktop

Hi all,
A quick question here from a (Nook) newbie.
Prior to rooting my NST, I used the Kobo desktop app (on a Mac) to transfer purchased ebooks to the device. The desktop app detected the NST just fine (there is an "ereader" tab in the interface), and would sync all* my purchases without a hitch.
Since rooting, the NST continues to mount as a couple of USB volumes, but it's no longer recognised by Kobo.
Does anybody here see similar behaviour? For that matter, does anybody here use Kobo Desktop with the NST? Any insight would be most welcome.
Cheers,
J
* I say "all"-- it would sync all purchases secured with Adobe Digital Editions. For some reason I never got to the bottom of, any free books I'd add to the library (Kobo has a small selection, not secured with ADE obviously) wouldn't make the transfer.
---
UPDATE: I seem to have fixed the problem! I removed the SD card from the NST, reconnected it and it immediately started syncing. Really curious as to the mechanism behind this, so I might have a poke around later this afternoon. The Kobo Desktop app seems happy enough to sync the reader when there are other USB volumes (e.g. a pen drive) present.
hi, what version of kobo are you using in the NST? Is it the lastest from Market? many thanks

[Q] How to view a PC only kindle ebook on android.

So I downloaded a kindle ebook for my finance class and its only viewable on my pc. When I tried to open it on my nexus 7 and galaxy nexus it said it was not compatible for either device. Is there anyway I can access my kindle ebook on my galaxy nexus and more importantly on the nexus 7?

Are you trying to push the ebook to your tablet via the PC or do you have the Kindle app on your device? Have you tried menu>sync & Check for items in the app? That should look for any purchases you've made on your Kindle account and queue them for download.
I wasn't aware there were PC only ebooks from Amazon. Did you get it from some other source than Amazon?
