if the Vibrant 4g... - Vibrant General

Let's say a couple of months from now, the vibrant 4g comes out, do you think we can just change the antennas and all that other good stuff and just slap all that new junk into the old vibrant?? just wondering

probably...but Samsung might be smarter that that....if we figured out that the vibrant was supposed to have a FFC...then they'll know that we could rip out those antennas and put em in our phones....then they'll lose money cuz no one but noobz will buy it.....just my opinion.

Not tryin to lmao....but if you had a 4g wouldn't you just keep it and throw out the old one?

well, it was worth a try since we jacked the ffc from the i9000 phone. then again, samsung will be smart about it... lol

The antenna is not what makes the 4g guys, wish it did. The phone we have right now can do 4g, we do not have the mimo modem software required for 4g. That is why we do not have 4 g I would guess once it is out we will figure how to clone the modem, but I bet they will tie the 4g to a ID number buried inside a ck-sum portion of the software. This will probably be the way they will control hacking And, that will take time to find this and hack into a usable patch BUT we can hope they are not that sophisticated.........

[Q] Captivate vs Vibrant

Hi,
I am in Canada and about to buy a new cellphone. We have Vibrant from Bell which I can get for $450 (used) and it has front facing camera. The only bad things that I know of is that gps has not been fixed yet and the phone looks like a cheap copy of Iphone.
Whereas Captivate is coming up pretty soon from Rogers. I have pay around $620 to get that (new). Unfortunately it has front facing camera, but th egps has been fixed.
Not sure which one to buy. Is there any other differences between them that I don't know?
Thanks in advance for your suggestions.
From what I understand they are the exact same phones, just different carriers. I think the vibrant has a sleeker look to it, but thats just my opinion. And my friend who has a captivate, he wasnt able to do something to his phone that I did without flashing the kernel or what not, not exactly sure what it was, but still. I think it was mobilap.
same phones basically, although you can unlock the vibrant and use it with att and access their 3g network but you cant do the same for the captivate
Vibrant looks much better
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I like the design of the Captivate better but will probably go for the Vibrant just because of the possibility of UMA.
That and it supports all bands.
Get the Canadian vibrant for sure!
It is the same as the international version i bet it has the update faster than our vibrant, also it comes with the front camera!!
No matter u use it or not, more stuff is good stuff
D:
i don't have a front facing camera!!!
Any one knows when the Vibrant is getting its gps fixed??

Advice Regarding Moving on From My Nexus One

I've had my Nexus One since April, and right now after seeing the new Nexus S (which is some-what disappointing in terms of upgraded hardware) I've decided it's time to move on. I'd like to sell before the Nexus S comes out since I believe the price of the Nexus One will decrease. I'm currently considering the following: G2, Nexus S, Captivate, Galaxy S i9000, and Mytouch 4G. The problem I'm having is deciding, see I would really love to have a front facing camera which would come in handy for me but, the phones that offer it don't work with AT&T 3G (except the i9000). So, I would like to get a captivate or i9000, but I'm not really fond of the i9000's design nor either's Touchwiz & Samsung's updates. I would really love a G2, since I could easily sell my Nexus and buy one with money to spare in some occasions and it's a very attractive device with great build quality (except for that hinge issue), but again, no AT&T 3G and no FFC. The Mytouch has the FFC, and is a nice phone and all but probably the ugliest thing EVER in my opinion. The Nexus S has everything I want (except for AT&T 3g) but, I would probably have to shell out $100-$200 to get it. So, what I need is advice. If you were in my situation, which would you choose? Thanks!

Still in a contract for another year :/
if i was in your situation i would not sell for a couple reasons
u will get STRESSED going back to edge. i mean its ridiculously slow coming for a 3g one
In a couple months they will be releasing some kick ass phones..wait patiently ..regardless the n1 is already depreciated
You will be trading one of the most customizables phones for some that you are not sure if it ll get the same support
IF you sign up for tmobile you buy one g2 and get 1 free (just got an email about that)

I would suggest u either sell and wait some months with a dumb phone or sell later. Cuz no phone right now on the market is an upgrade

Get a Desire Z from bell canada, unlock it, and that's your G2 with AT&T 3g support.
The one I am impatiently waiting for is the Motorola Olympus for at&t. They say q1 of 2011, which is just when my warranty is running out for the n1.
the nexus one is still one of the best phones currently out there. my opinion at least. i hope to keep this phone another year before i get another itch. til then i hope my N1 doesn't get any scratches.
I'm looking at the desire Z also for the next phone. I'd like the price to come a bit first though. I haven't found it for less than 650 yet.
Wait a month 2 c whats new in 2011...
Went from a Nexus to a G2 then back to a Nexus to make some extra cash to get rid of the keyboard.
Currently I traded my Nexus for a new Mytouch 4G.
It is a very fast phone, solid build, decent camera, and its 4G, not to mention it has some nice novelties like front facing camera and a hard button for the camera and 720p recording out of the box.
Alot of people complain about the UI but i havent seen much slowdown or problems with it. It's a pleasure to use and i have yet to remove the battery bc it froze.
I went from a Galaxy S to the N1.
The screen is definitely a BIG step up from the N1, both in responsiveness and quality.
The phone itself though, frustrating. Good hardware potentially but crippled by bad implementation. Out of the box they are laggy and unstable. The GPS is basically useless for anything other than telling you where you are at that point. Start moving about, and its gone. Then its the going into a coma for no apparent reason.
The N1 is probably just about a more dependable device. Not sure I'd go for the SGS over an N1.
I would try to get a dual core phone with vanilla android. So I recommend that you wait.
my advice is it sucks but you have to just wait for an ATT 3G version to come out. just wait for a nexus S with att 3g is your only choice. the nexus one is still awesome enough to ride it out for a bit longer.

Well, see im stuck in a dilemma. I can either a. sell my nexus one on eBay right now for $450 (offer I just got) and add $for a Nexus S OR b. wait it out. The only thing i'm afraid of is that the nexus's value goes down and when NS comes out everyones gonna be selling and their gonna be a dime a dozen....
SO, what do you guys think I should do? I have until tomorrow to decide to sell...
Personal finances are different for everyone. If U need the bread now for an upgrade, then sell at the best price.
I say wait it out. The Nexus one is going to get Gingerbread soon and the value wont depreciate as fast as you're afraid it will. In a couple of months it will be on a very small list of phones running Gingerbread and people will be willing to pay top dollar for it.
I'm in the same boat. I can upgrade right now but there's nothing on AT&T compelling enough to make me switch. Hopefully CES will give me something to look forward to. That LG Star is actually looking surprisingly good, as is the Olympus, and I definitely want Tegra2 on my next phone.

Kiosk in mall devoted to Evo??????

Sorry if this is old news, but I was in 2 malls this week doing some christmas shopping, and saw kiosks devoted ONLY to the Evo. There were about 6 Evos on display and 2 big evos like the iphones in the apple store. Funny thing was, one of them was setup right in-front of the apple store. Im sure that wasnt on accident! Go sprint!
PS, this was in Los Angeles Anyone else see these?
Is that the new EVO 4G Tablet on the side of the kiosk?

...because it just came out and is the headlining Android phone? Which brings me to my main point, does anyone think it's sad that the EVO is still Sprint's flagship phone? During the same time period:
a. Verizon had the Incredible, then the Droid X, Fascinate, Droid 2, and now the Droid Pro.
b. AT&T had the iPhone 4, Captivate, BB Torch, and now a slew of WP7 phones.
c. T-Mo had the MyTouch 3G slide, Vibrant, G2, MyTouch 4G, and now the Nexus S.
..and Sprint? The EVO and Epic. What's up with that? This isn't a which phone is better thing, just pointing out how much Sprint is lacking on the high end phone selection.
Since as a Premier member I can only upgrade every 12 monts, I'm cool with it.

Sprint's NEVER had the biggest phone selection. They offer a few fantastic phones and dirt cheap plans. Honestly though, I'd pick the Evo and the Epic over any Android phone out there right now though haha. The Nexus S would be the only one I'd consider, but not anywhere near enough to leave spring haha

T-Mo is arguably as cheap plus it's HSPA+ is free. With them you got the options of: the Vibrant (it's SGS variant but is "meh"), G2 (Powerful and slick slider with Vanilla Android), MyTouch 4G (which is just about the/one of the best spec'd phones out), or the Nexus S (arguably the best phone out right now).
You could argue that you'll just upgrade every year in June but how is that a good thing? I mean, look at that Shift 4G thread where people are arguing on whether the EVO is still worth getting? It's 6 months old, I would feel extremely limited and not to mention shafted if I needed to get a high end Sprint phone right now.
I just think that Sprint has to step up with some more phones.

The Droid Pro is trash IMO. I'd consider the Nexus S, iPhone 4, G2, and maybe (but probably not) a WP7 phone. It's all matter of preference but the fact is that you got more worthwhile phones to judge and I wish that was the case with Sprint.
And what does all this crap have to do with the original question about the kiosk?
Agreed! I sell phones and I am yet to come by an android phone as reliable, fast, and attractive as the Evo. Sprint's got a lock on phone quality. All the other android phones you mentioned dont measure up...except the Nexus S.

All carriers will help you with the cost of your ETF. Call and ask, it's Christmas season.
I rather walk in the sprint store and see a few great phones that will fit my needs... maybe like a front facing camera? Or a 4.3 inch screen? HDMI out? 10+mbps of data speed? A kick stand to kick back in the office and watch Hulu at full speed? Or play Need for Speed Shift while waiting for my girl? Maybe use Fring to video chat with her since she also has a front facing camera? Or how about getting on the XDA app and laugh at stupid posts people make regarding sprint and phones and trophys about tours..

Signal Issues

I got my Vibrant right at launch and I've never had a stable 3g signal. It always seems to go back and forth between 3g and Edge. I always just assumed we didn't have good signal in my area but I now know that isn't true.
I picked up a used G1 to take the camera out of to use at work and loaded it up with updated Radio, SPL, and Rom and it gets a steady 3g signal all the time and also got my wife a Mytouch 4G for Christmas and her phone basically stays on 3g all the time too.
Like right now my phone is sitting next to me on my desk at work and it's on 3g but when I pick it up and click on an app or two it goes back to Edge. Could this be a hardware issue and something I could fix like the hardware GPS fix?
Just to add I currently have Axura 2.2.7 and KA6 modem. I've used every modem that's come out and same issue with all. Thanks for the help.
bump for some help lol.
It's a tough decision because I like this phone so much but not having a reliable 3g signal makes it tough. If worse comes to worse I guess I will have to sell the phone and might go back to the G1 until something else comes out. Still debating on getting a G2 or mytouch but don't want buyers remorse when something better comes out next month.
Call t-mobile and see about a replacement phone. might just be your radio is bad? Or defective phone all together.
That's what I would do.

I had issues like this kinda I live in a hspa area and was having great 3g service 4bars all the time and one day it just would go to edge I called tmo talk to technical support and told them about it they had someone go out and look at the towers by me and they fixed it in 2 days im running 2.2.5.7 with KA6 and have great service still.

I really don't think there's a tower problem because I get great signal on my G1 and on my wifes mytouch 4g.
I'd love to contact Tmobile about this but I can't see it going anywhere because I've opened my phone and removed the camera. We can't have camera phones at work but we are allowed to remove the camera and replace it with permanent epoxy so that a camera can't be re-installed. Plus I've had the phone since launch.

Who makes you remove the camera and the epoxy of it? Why don't you just leave your phone at home or in your car then?
Anyways, that sucks. If it's a defective modem/radio you're kind of SOL unless there is a way to mod it?

Yeah, for your own safety I will not answer that question lol.
Leaving it in a car or at home isn't an option. I get up at 445 and get home from work about 1600, I sleep about 7hrs a night. I didn't pay that much for my high end "mobile" phone to only access it for about six hours out of the day lol. I don't mind not having a camera anyway, I never used it when I did have it.
Looks like I'm screwed on the signal issue. Sucks. So you guys think the Mytouch 4g or G2 would be better? Or is there another phone coming soon to Tmobile I should wait for?

There are many new phones coming in the next year - I would hold out a couple of months. (and I'm not talking Vibrant 4G+ )
I might wait a bit then. I can't see myself getting another Samsung. I'd have hung onto the Vibrant for quite a while if it weren't for the signal issues because it's a great piece of hardware. I just don't trust Samsung to keep us updated. Not saying I'll never buy a Samsung phone again but they will have to turn their track record around as far as updating software before I jump back in. HTC seems like a much safer bet although I won't have that pretty screen

Vibrant 4g out 2/23

Who all is going to be making the switch? Kind of excited!
...
You will not be seeing me buy another Samsung phone ever again after purchasing the original Vibrant... Sound kind of redundant to say at this point but then again what else was a thread like this going to generate in these forums?..
I wont buy it. Only way I would touch another Samsung phone is if its bone stock android OR the Nexus S. Dont get me wrong, the phone itself is fantastic but the support behind it is the worst of any product I have ever owned. I would however buy a Nexus S just because its backed up by google and I know support will be great.
No i'm installing a ffc and tyring to unthrottle my data lol
I figured the responses would be close to this. I work at T-Mobile and am thinking about using one of my discounts to hold me over until the LG Optimus 2x drops. I just like that fact that the internet will be HSPA+ and with the help of Team Whiskey no lag lol. I don't know, I have the discounts available to me so I might as well use them right?
I won't buy it but not because I'm still seething mad at Samsung... I simply find it hard to justify the cost of a new phone without any sort of carrier discount for the few additional features it brings to the table. Besides, I trust in the Vibrant Dev team to successfully port what is released to the 4g to our version as necessary.
Hell no.

Nah. 4G is irrelevant, as 5mb down is plenty for me, not to mention all the speculation about the original vibrant being capable of 14.5mb down.
FFC is installable on Vibrant for $30, and hopefully when the 4G drops we can port a kernel supporting the FFC with no banding concerns. Like another guy said here, no point in buying the exact same phone with a couple extra mostly useless perks. If you have the tmo discount, try out a MT4G or something and if you don't like that sell it. People who don't mod their phones will eat that up on CL and you'll make back you money and probably profit. Or just hold out for dual core.
For me, it's not enough of a hardware change to justify the money (I never do contracts). I rarely see more than about 4 megs (usually no more than 2.5) so "4G" is kinda pointless until T-Mo ramps themselves up in my area. I plan on waiting to see what all of the Dual Core's have to offer. I'm perfectly happy with the Vibrant. It's relatively easy to modify, forgiving to user errors and with the Nexus S floating around out there with such similar hardware specs to the Vibrant, I'm confident that we'll see a good Nexus S port and development support for a good while to come. Plus my Vibrant is already about 6 months old and I like to stretch my devices out about a year and skip every other "generation".
unless the device is either given to me, or donated for a dev phone, I dont plan on getting it.
Heck, I have a Vib 4G already minus the 4G. LOL

+1---Well Said.
All the cry babies should buy an I-POOP, then they can have error free no modifications possible, expensive apps fun phone. Me, I like the Vibrant and I get 5-6 DL all the time and 3-3.5 up...... So as long as XDA is here All of us are ok
I will say that when I go to L.A./Dana Point area, I see 5.5-6.5 Mbps. There rest of the time here in Alabama, I normally see about 2 Mbps (downtown Birmingham will give me 5 Mbps) although in the house I'm lucky to get a full Meg.
I have zero complaints. T-mobile is consistently faster than AT&T and I get faster speeds on T-Mo than on my Verizon MiFi (If both devices are on a 3G network of course). I just have a hard time thinking that a phone capable of 21 Mbps is worth it when I have one capable of 14.4 Mbps. At this point, it's a novelty more than a real world application. Now, when T-Mobile flips the switch, maybe that will change. I remember when 1.5 Mbps coming into your house was blazing fast.
All I need to already have a Vibrant 4G (minus the 4G) is a FFC...and I probably should do that mod just to see what it's all about. Especially after all of the awesome steam it's picked up!
no dual core chip?
Nope, no thanks.
Dual core will be irrelevant to the android software until the end of the year. Why? The Nexus S is single core and most apps and the OS will be optimized for the hummingbird.
I'd probably get it if GPS locks instantly, is accurate and doesn't jump(in other words, NORMAL GPS). Can't live without SUPERAMOLED. Sucks it doesn't have LED flash or internal SD though...
I'm still kinda pissed at samsung for doing this... but thats the way it goes. I will not be getting it because of the space. I have 2 gigs left on my phone and 10 on my 32 gig sd card. The 4G will not give me enough space.
No more Samsung mobile devices for me, switching back to HTC when the next great one comes out.
