Boost the Speed of Your EVO’s 3G - Update - EVO 4G General

I just finished applying a 3G speed boosting mod reported by member Avalaunchmods - in this thread here. I can report that the procedure works on the Fresh Evo 3.5.0.1 ROM by Flipz.
I would post this as a reply to that thread, but my post count isn't high enough to post in a dev forum. I think the information may help some who are trying to perform the speed boosting mod and having trouble.
The mod basically tells your phone NOT to use Sprint's proxy server when doing certain types of http communications. The post claims that it will speed up your upload and download rates by a measurable amount. It certainly sped me up a little.
However, for some it may actually reduce performance. Proxy servers aren't all bad - or always bad. Their original intent was to increase performance on pipes with limited bandwidth (caching proxy servers) and help protect client devices from malicious traffic. Proxy servers can also be used to prohibit access to certain sites. I'm told Sprint's proxy does this for some number of music streaming services. So you may want to keep this mod, no matter what impact it has on your performance. In any event, unless you made note of the proxy settings before following the mod's instructions, you're stuck with no way back. I have recorded the settings:
HTTP PD Proxy (port): 8085
HTTP PD Proxy Addr: pd.vog.sprintpcs.com
When you read the instructions, these values will make sense to you.
Lastly and potentially much more important: If you use Google Voice (at least with my settings), you need to disable it (using Titanium Backup's "Freeze" or a startup manager or simply an uninstall) before trying the procedure outlined in the post. Google Voice hooks the dialing process and causes the EPST service to Force Close when you dial the access code in step 2 of the instructions.
Reboot after removing or disabling Google Voice. Then follow the procedure to remove the proxy settings. Then re-install or re-enable Google Voice.
(Someone with the ability - it's okay with me if you cut and paste (move) this information as a reply to Avalaunchmods' thread in the Dev forum.)

good post man. i had to revert back to factory setting because the 0.0.0.0 settings drastically reduced my performance on airave network. and 70% of the time im on it.

Just about ANY semi-decent proxy server is going to speed up your access... but there is a price:
1. Not all outbound connections play well with a proxy server in the mix.
2. Your content can be filtered (and analyzed very easily) at any whim of the proxy provider.
3. You are not guaranteed to get realtime data; most popular sites will be cached and actually this is where most speed gains are realized.
And finally, having a proxy in the mix only gives a perceived speed boost. Your actual bandwidth DOES NOT change. Your contention for the content on any one site is what changes.
I hope that helps.

While it is true that changing the proxy does not magically increase the bandwidth, the assumption here is that the Sprint proxy servers are overloaded and causing slow speeds.
Using this fix just gets us back up to normal.

Best data speeds

I am curious what settings other Cingular users have to get the max speed on their data connections.
I have openDNS, which has helped tremendously, but as I see it there are 4 options
My ISP with wap.cingular
My ISP with isp.cingular
MEdiaNet with wap.cingular
Anyone seen any particularly high numbers with any one in particular?

what do u mean you have openDNS (WHAT IS THIS WHERE DO I GET AND WHAT DOES THIS DO?)
and does your wizard access the internet all by itself like when its just sitting there and in standby??? not go online with ie but the arrows start moving where the edge icon is.
and i don't have any today screen plugins that access the web
Google it! openDNS is website offering a free alternative DSN.. go there and read.

Go to Opendns.com. They have very specific instructions on what to do and what it is. This should give you a nice speed bump immediately since for some reason the DNS servers that Cingular uses are pretty slow. I am assuming you have Cingular here, if not, your mileage may vary.
I also don't have today screen plugins that access the web but I do use direct push with my exchange server so my connection is always active.
thanks dcdivenut i did have my email refreshing i just forgot cause it wasent working
i thought my phone was tapped
and thanks for the info about the speed increase
for anyone else who wants to do this

What is the difference is anyone of them better then the other or what is the deal. I have the pda unlimited plan which setting should i use?
An oft asked question (by me, in fact) ... and after much research, it is not clear (to me) that there is one correct response. General consensus seems to be that if the wap.cingular settings work for you, use them and don't worry about it (but you may want to not use "medianet" settings, since those have proxy settings associated with them, and the proxy settings can cause heartburn trying to use wifi and some sites).
Beyond that, purportedly there are some sites that may only work with the isp.cingular setting instead of the wap.cingular setting, but I have not found them (except, at times, the yahoo mail beta site). After much deliberation on the issue, I just use wap.cingular (with no proxy settings) and it works great, and fast.
For some old discussions on the subject, check out these threads:
-- on the cingular forums
-- on these forums
I had great luck on the mediamax plan using wap.cingular without the proxy. I did however find one exception that forced me to switch to isp.cingular and the higher cost unlimited pda connect plan. outlook web access using the html browser did not work well for me with wap.cingular, with or without the proxy. it would log me out every few minutes and I would have to log in again. it seemed to have something to do with network address translation and switching between two towers. not sure, but it is much better using isp.cingular.
this was the only exception I found.
It's all very cloak and dagger isn't it? Gotta love the phone companies: they'll do anything to not give you what you want.
Here's the deal: wap.cingulargprs.com uses a shared address with NAT; isp.cingulargrps.com assigns a public IP. Neither of these plans support inbound Internet traffic to the client (that is, they don't support push). For that you will need an unlimited PDA data plan, convince someone to add a certain feature code to your plan. and then configure the "internet" apn. The downside with going that route is that your PDA is now subject to all of the security risks that any computer with a public Internet address would be at risk for.

Hack to make web browsing faster...

This hack has been around forever but I figured I would mention it because surprisingly few people know about it:
DO THIS:
Settings > Wireless > Wifi Settings > Menu (Button) > Advanced > Use Static IP (check this) > DNS1 Settings (set to 208.67.222.222) > DNS2 Settings (set to 208.67.220.220) > Reboot
Not all roms will allow you to access this, but if yours does, give it a try.
WHAT IT DOES:
When you enter a name like Amazon in your browser, before going to Amazon it needs to translate "Amazon" into an IP address. This can be SLOOOOW. By setting your DNS servers, you give it one single IP address to go to for all IP address translations - i.e., it's faster.
This is an old PC hack and I wasn't sure it would work on a phone but we tried it out over at another forum and everyone was getting MUCH faster page opens in their browsers. Many said their Market was working faster too.
Give it a shot and see what you think. Good luck
** Read more about it here: https://store.opendns.com/setup/
Oh yeah, it's free so no worries.
Wont you run into problems if you move off your home network. Some networks wont give you the static ip you want.

Dunno. Seemed to have sped up my 3G as well. If it doesn't work you can just uncheck the static ip thing when away from home.

Yea that's what I figured. Also I use google dns. 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 its easier to remember.

eh most of the time you wont have to jump more than 1 or 2 DNS servers to sort your IP, than that IP is sent down those on the way back to you for future reference(until a hold down timer expires most likely)
gosh, hope that makes sense =P

Nevertheless, this is faster.
OP, your link leads to a website that appears to require a sign-up to continue, is there a link that doesn't?
Also, while I can see how this may help with a Wi-Fi signal, how is it you've experienced faster 3G? Just curious, thanks.
First, this isnt a hack
Second, you're changing dns for your wifi, not 3g.
Thanks for the reminder though, but does any know if you can change your 3g dns?

##data(3282)# / edit mode / there are plenty of settings to mess with here (and mess things up too, but here is where you can find what you are looking for)
btw... you will need your msl to enter edit mode
I wouldn't go around fooling with the sprint default dns it could cause problems.
Isn't that the opendns ip? Who cares... this is not a hack... at all. I use 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 anyway.

You don't have to sign up, just use the DNS addresses given:
DNS1: 208.67.222.222
DNS2: 208.67.220.220
That's all you need.
LOL at people thinking hard setting dns servers = hacking.
Setting up DNS does not speed up browsing. It might speed up the initial resolving of the website if the current dhcp dns server is slow.
Thanks for the good laugh tho.
Now if somebody could post how to change WiMAX DNS servers, that would be much more interesting... for a variety of reasons...

Removing the Sprint Proxy on our phones. Does it make a noticable difference?

I have read a few threads about removing this. To me it is an extra hop, and is probably slowing traffic down to some degree. Has anyone else tried removing it, and what were your results as far as connection speed/reliability?
It's more than an extra hop... In the past, there has been some throttling through their proxy, as well as interference with RTSP streams (they wanted to force people to use their TV/Sports/Movie streaming apps, and pay for it).
Not sure if these things are still an issue, but you can be sure they aren't if you disable the proxy.
Think of the resources and expense necessary (servers, bandwidth, personnel) necessary to push ALL HTTP traffice through their own proxy servers -- they have to be doing it for some reason. If these servers didn't do anything, but were completely transparent in all ways, they would be throwing away gobs of money to have and maintain them.
How do you disable this?
Check the dev section and look in the "increase 3g/4g speed" thread. You need your msl number.
Removing the proxy doesn't speed up your 3g data speed, it just starts loading the page sooner. In lower signal areas I've found the proxy can slow page loading by up to 10 seconds, which means your phone tries to connect to the proxy for 10 seconds before the webpage you entered is even looked up.
If you're in a high 3g signal area then dont worry about the proxy unless you don't want to risk getting throttled. They seem to use it to monitor data usage and throttle heavy users during high traffic times.

if you know your msl then just open the dialer, press ##3282#(##DATA#) go to EDIT, type in your MSL. select Others. select multimedia. change rtsp address, rtsp port, HTTPD address, HTTPD port to all zeros(0).
if you dont have your msl. download connectbot. open it. select where it says ssh and change it to local. select the text box and just hit enter(no need to type anything). a command prompt will come up. type getprop ril.MSL
this will show you your msl.

RTSP / HTTP proxy editing?

First off - my 10 is running stock rooted Marshmallow.
I got my MSL from the Sprint rep, and I can get into EPST and edit my RTSP proxy to 0.0.0.0. Great, fine, fantastic, that's better streaming media, I don't want to have to deal with a caching proxy, been doing that since I got my Evo 3D ages ago.
Now, here's the question - where can you strip out the HTTP proxy settings? I don't want my HTTP / HTTPS traffic running through a caching proxy, and I get MUCH better speeds when I'm directly connecting to the sites.

I would like to know this as well, although it may be that we are forced through a proxy upstream via a firewall rewrite rule - whether or not we remove that information from the actual client. Anyone at sprint want to comment on this?
Anybody ever find the answer to this?
Also, where did you edit the RTSP settings? I don't see it anywhere in ##3282#. I'm running completely stock 7.0
Yeah, I don't see rtsp under epst, I see dss.
