AT&T streak users - Streak 5 General

hey guys. at&t user here. instead of waiting around for the official OTA update to 2.2 that we've been waiting to see come down the pipes for months with nothing to show for it, i decided to take matters into my own hands. I called up dell and told them my streak was stuck at the boot screen. The nice tech support lady told me run the factory recovery, (i didn't, just keep playing hot pursuit) and i told her there was no change. she immediately set me up for an exchange. So in 3 days (1 day processing, 2 day shipping UPS at no cost to me) i will receive a new streak and hopefully it will come pre-installed with the 2.2 update.
i will let you guys know if my plan works. and if not i'll get a new streak just the same.
and ya i could get 2.2 on there through flashing of 3 different roms but i really don't feel like going through that trouble when they can mail me one with it pre-installed.
cheers

couldnt just do the 2.2 update yourself?

Yeah no ****. Takes all of an hour to flash and reinstall apps. Brilliant

lol... Your not even sure it will be preloaded with 2.2. You'll just be back to square one with waisted time. Why even bother?? Also if it comes with the ATT 2.2, you know you will have all this extra bloatwear hogging up your memory you'll just end up tweakin your streak anyways at the end.

LOL the stock 2.2 is crap anyways. I had the stock 2.2 and the quadrant scores were horrible updated to the dj Steve 1.6 and its amazing now

You also may be faced with the issue of it not being "broken". And they might decide to bill you...
Another thing to consider is the fact that you originally ordered an AT&T locked model. They will likely just send another AT&T locked model which I can tell you will still have 1.6 as I just received mine today and it as laden with 1.6.

This tactic is full of assumptions and totally without any precedence that it will work.
Full of Fail.

first of all they send me anew one before i send back my old one. second i don't really feel like wasting time going through the headache of updating a phone's rom 3 times just to get a buggy unofficial version of the rom. i can root the official and get rid of bloatware in a matter of 1 minute. second i get a brand new phone no matter what. no scratches or dings.
i'm not 15 anymore. i have a life and i cant be bothered with doing all these little mods and tweaks and ****. i have a life outside of technology.
umad?

LOL I am not 15, I work 60 hours a week, and play soccer 2 twice a week.
I guess but ur standard I have a lot of time in my hand.
I got the phone 2 weeks ago and run a quadrant test, and wasn't satisfied with it performance. Took me exactly 20 mins to upgrade to did Steve's version. Phone has actually not crashed once yet and its running better than the official 2.2.
How long did the phone call to dell take?

Sure, why not? But if you can't handle the heat of actually knowing how to use your technology and just want everything user-friendly (child-proofed) then just get an iPhone. Lame ass.

I flashed official 2.2 straight from att 1.6 using QDL. I didnt have to jump thru 3 roms. Your method is good if u just want a new streak I guess, but to get 2.2, seems too much a hassle for me.
Btw ppl who have ordered the unlocked with 2.2 since dec. havent even received theirs yet, id be surprised if they gave u one so soon.

So is there anyone left who owns a US streak and is waiting for the official 2.1 like me?
Or am i dumb and not understanding why i shouldnt just root it to 2.1? Ha i asked because all of my friends have rooted to 2.1 but ive just been waiting paciently for the official OTA.

Because 1.6 works fine meantime?
There's 1000's of 1.6 users, no least of which are 2.1 updaters who backdated (notice i didn't say downgraded) after deciding that 2.1 was bollox!
If the official release of 2.1 offers no improvements over the beta i wouldn't bother getting to excited. IMO all the 2.1 did was to remove all the good stuff from 1.6 and update the standard browser that i never use anyway!
Okayy cool thankss

Sadly, the latest word from Dell's blogger is "before 2011", which I'm sure translates into "last week of December" unless of course it slips and they claim never to have said 'before 2011".
I'm hoping he just gave a safe window to prevent another release date fiasco. Hopefully it'll much sooner.

I'm still running vanilla and I will do so most likely until a "real" version of 2.x comes out and the chefs manage to build some clean custom ROMs.
I don't need all the latest and greatest crap someone decides to poke into it, just mean and lean and I'll decide what goes in it after.
We all in the same 1.6 boat, waiting for 2.1 and best for 2.2

Yea, Ill wait for the OTA release as well. Actually for what I have been using the Streak for, Kindle for Android, it works very well. After the release, I will decide if I want to use my EVO as a hot spot or go with the alternate sim card for T-Mobil. T-Mobil has better plans than AT&T.
imma have to wait to bc coming from windows mobile i dont understand anything about android
First time user of Android myself (this August), initially was going to wait then realised that, with Dells track record, that could take forever (and yes, 3months is forever in phone world!). So took my Dell 00 unrooted, upgraded to 02 v1.6 then 02 2.1 (all in one go), and still unrooted!
No issues (knock on wood) except the usual, which are regardless of version, i.e phone standby consuming power, slow(er) maps/GPS lock etc, which aren't really problems per-se.

lol go att captivate!

it isnt fixing the issue from what I read. AT&T also never mentions a GPS fix.
The more and more time that goes by, the more and more I want a G2 when it comes out honestly. Sumsung really dropped the ball here and its going to leave a bad taste in a lot of people's minds for a long time...

You know what, I think Samsung is 50 percent to Blame. The other 50 percent is T-Mobile. T-MOBILE...simply does not support their phones.
Buying the G2 will be the same damn story. Sure it will come with 2.2, but as soon as 3.0 comes along, every other carrier will have it months before T-Mobile releases it on the G2, and you will cry and complain "the more and more I want Verizon."
I honestly think the problem is T-Mobile, and not so much the handset manufacturers.
tmobile is throwing Samsung under the bus, I got this back from a message I sent to Tmobiles facebook a bit ago..
Robert,
We understand your interest on updates Samsung is working on one and as soon as we have any more information on this we will communicate it.
.. notice they say that Samsung is working on one, I did ask about 2.2 though and not the gps fix.

Honestly, my biggest regret was leaving at&t. I left because I wasn't interested in an iphone, I noticed no good new WM apps were coming along, and I wanted a 3.5 mm headphone jack on my phone. The nexus filled all those needs so when it was released I jumped ship to t-mobile. I found out the grass isn't always greener on the other side.
I still have no idea why people say T-Mobiles customer support is better than AT&T; from everything I've seen it isn't even close.
Someone else posted on here before about T-Mobiles BB getting upgraded to V.5 not too long ago.. they have 6 out or it's close to release. T-Mobile does lack in this "Software/Firmware" Update department. They have some decent phones but don't support them enough.
It's amazing, when the G1 came out, yes it was the first Android phone but updates rolled out pretty quick. I know it was stock "Vanilla" Android but updates were addressed in a timely manor. But now they have the My Touch, My Touch Slide and Cliq series and now the Galaxy S phone.
Wow everyone is a bunch of goddamn vultures here. Waaah I've had my phone a month and a half Samsung and T-Mobile suck I want my updates waaah. People need to realize that updates need to go through a lot of steps. If you don't like your phone return it and get a different one.

So what its perfectly ok for other Galaxy S phones that haven't been out as long as the Vibrant to be getting their updates, but not us? Honestly, I really think it has to do a lot with TMO and not Sammy. Luckily, I've rooted and running a custom ROM and Voodoo fix. I also know that doing that is not for everyone though.
The Captivate came out what like 3 days after the Vibrant? Maybe tmo and Samsung are waiting to see how the update goes on the Captivate. It wont matter anyways we could get it tomorrow and people will still complain that it's not 2.2 or their phone is still not fast enough or some other bullcrap.

Your joking right? First almost 2 1/2 months. Second the others all got a update as mentioned.
All other phones with 1ghz are running froyo, even a hd2 without android has it.lom
I vote we get /b/ to start ****. Maybe then we might get some movement from T-Mo and Samsung... just me? >.>
not that it will do anything to Tmobile but I've decided that whoever gets 2.2 on the Galaxy S device first is who I will be switching to. If its Tmobile then I won't be going anywhere, but if another carrier can get it out before Tmobile see ya.
Tmobile launched this device First int he US there is no reason they should not be the first to release the OS update even if it takes them till November
I do agree that they need to support their phones better. But at least TMO isn't forcing bing down our throats either.
I come from the Blackberry side of the fence and I remember when 5.0 devices were new last year it took forever for TMO to release an update for the 9700, and that original release was filled with bugs. I finally gave up on waiting for them and simply downloaded another carrier's release. Easy to do on that platform.
I like the Vibrant for the most part. Yes it has bugs; yes it's quality needs to be improved. Yes the GPS kind of sucks. But what other high-end phone out there doesn't have issues these days? I'm sure the G2 will have them as well.

today is Jan 12 ,no froyo update,I think they are cheating us

ok here we are ,jan 12 is here ,and the update is not here , dell and at&t are making fun of us.

Funny... if you call AT&T customer service and ask about the 2.2 update, you can actually hear the representative getting that "glassy eyed" blank, "rabbit in the headlights" look when you try to explain what you are looking for. AND then, you can expect to be guided through a long, boring script of "Have you checked the settings.. Have you restarted the device..." and whatnot, only to be told, two hours later that the update is still in production and no actual date has been set for the release for the update.
Better to spend that two hours beating your head against the wall, or poking yourself in the eye with a spoon... It will be less painful, and more amusing for you.

"Cheating" is a very nice way of stating it. Personally, I believe that they are felonious bastards that are stealing from us.
Other than apple, anyone waiting on a carrier to release something, is going to be in for a long wait!
Do yourself a favor, read up on the qdl-repair tool, download it, and get the 309?
version of 2.2, then update using the update tool to 318, you'll be glad you did!
The only "glitch" is if you are running the x64 version of windows. I followed the instructions TO THE T, on both my home & laptop x64 win7 and had zero problems updating via qdl.

2.2 Update news from Dell

I called Dell yesterday and they told me that the 2.2 OTA update did start rolling out yesterday (Jan. 12) for AT&T customers. They also said it will not hit every phone at the same time and could take the rest of the month before all phones receive the update notification.
Tnx for the update, but, considering how easy it is to get the unbloated 2.2, unless you are concerned about a warranty issue, why would anyone want a bloated locked down carrier rom?
Maybe there are some fixes some would like. I'm going to try it at least

I had several failures trying to update using the QDL tool. I finally tried one last with a different computer and it worked just fine.
I believe the problem I was having had to do with the drivers working with a 64bit OS. In the end I used an old Eee PC I have running 32bit Win7. I installed the drivers and everything worked without a problem.

No asian is getting GB update dude.
'em from India and when ask dell ppl they passout
Besides, unlocked Streaks direct from Dell would be the first to get such an update since ROMs for those units don't have to be modified by the carriers to add carrier bloatware before being released.
well... i am not here to defend it. It is a rumor after all... everybody belives in what they want to belive.
2.2.2 stable
Is gingerbread "really" needed?
Yeah, who wouldn't want the latest & greatest OS for our device, but, just for me, 2.2.2 (purchased direct from Dell, unlocked) is smooth as silk.
It came with 1.6, up'd to 2.1, then 2.2.2 and with the script tweak, it's smooth as silk. Does it get 10,000 on the benchmarks? Nope, not hardly, but I can run it for a week at a time, no lock ups, only the once in a while app FC, so I have to ask myself, does it do what it is suppose to do? YES. What benefits would I gain from updating to GB or HC? Probably not much other than some eye candy.
This gadget is my business device 75% of the time and I don't have time to constantly reboot, reinstall, wipe everything out.
I guess I'm among the minority.

After a couple of months, I got REALLY tired of not having pinch-to-zoom in the browser..... so I decided to root it and install a custom ROM that would give me that capability. Although technically the ROM install was successful, the phone's battery life immediately plummeted to about 3-hours (from a full charge). When the lcd started becoming cloudy (probably from overheating due to a half-baked ROM), I sent it back to Google for replacement. 2-weeks later it arrived freight COLLECT, along with a letter from Google saying because it had been modified, the warranty was void. That was a $600 lesson I learned the hard way.
When I read here where people want to change some minor feature and root their Streaks, then run into major problems and expect others to fix it, I just have to smile to myself. I mean is it really worth destroying your phone just to get a fraction of a millisecond faster processor speed?
I bought my Streak factory-unlocked from Dell, and because of my past experience, I would never root it, especially since it's my only phone/pocket-sized link to the outside world. When the warranty expires, I'll probably get something else. But my factory-installed Froyo OS is smooth as silk. It's not lightning fast, but I don't have an extra $550 that I can blow to make it faster LOL

Rooting never hurts unless you have no idea what you are doing. ( I had to say this )

So Streakowner, what you mean is how well the phone functions after it's been rooted (even "correctly" rooted), has NOTHING to do with the ROM installed on it? With all due respect, I beg to differ with you on that point.... please explain further

if you refer to rooting as only having the su and busybox installed then , you are wrong, but if you meant that installing custom ROMs is bad practice , I do agree totally with you, you never know what is inside the complied libwebcore.so for example, can just be anything there, even some nasty code you aren't aware but your bank will insist it was you who ordered that item from Ebay .

I should have clarified that, streakOwner..... my bad ... You are correct...... Rooting alone did not destroy my Nexus...... the culprit, no doubt, was my choice of which ROM to install.... Nonetheless, it did void the warranty...... To borrow an overused phrase, "Other than that, Mrs, Lincoln, how was the play"? LOL

To expand on what he said, the usual modules added from rooting are:
SU
Superuser.apk
Busybox
Sometimes bash.
By themselves they dont do anything, on a rooted system with no root able apps it's functionally the same as not being rooted.
It depends entirely on what apps are doing that requires root permissions to accomplish.
It's like buying a bad battery that will explode. If you dont ever charge it and put it in your phone nothing will happen, it's just a plastic brick until then.
Rooting would be the equivilent to removing the battery cover and installing it vs having it taped shut.
Good analogy, Manii..... Unfortunately, my need to have pinch-to-zoom on my Nexus basically ended up costing me the phone. Had I waited for an update, or installed a different ROM, I maybe could have avoided disaster......
Just from looking around here, it seems the vast majority of custom ROMs are slightly, if not overly, buggy (IMO..... I mean, look at the title of this thread). I had an old HD2 awhile back that I would flash different ROMs to, just for kicks.... but it wasn't my main phone. Prior to that, I unlocked our iPhones (relatively simple), so I thought installing a different ROM on the Nexus couldn't be all that difficult..... The root/ROM install was simple enough, but the real trick with Android is finding a custom ROM that actually works 100%. That's why I took issue with streakOwner's "if you know what you're doing" comment. I should've clarified the Nexus problem was totally ROM-related..... not a "pbk&c" issue (Problem Between Keyboard & Chair) LOL

im running a stock but rooted streak, couldnt be more happy.. only needed root for blocking ads, and to change fonts etc. swtich between this and my infuse..
Hey SpiritCrush..... Not to veer off-topic here, but how do you like your Infuse? T-Mobile is getting the Galaxy S2 on Friday (4.65-inch screen version), and I have a line on my Family Plan that's up for renewal.... so I might consider getting one (I'm going to renew that line anyway).... Not sure I can live with "TouchWiz" though.... Humm.... that one might be worth rooting just to disable TouchWiz (how's that to segway back on topic?)

Co-sign. I run 354 rooted and I never have any problems, and I use this as my only device.

I have tried every custom 2.3 rom available, but none of them is stable.
Will we get the official 2.3 rom?

I also tried every 2.3 rom available, only the simplestreak seems to be an unofficial stable rom, but not "rock solid" as I noticed sometimes it freezes expecially while using ADW launcher.
