Is this for customers that sign up after this rule was in effect? Or all tmobile customers including existing customers?
Sone people I know get throttled @ 5gb. Others hit 30 gigs with no throttle. They say cause it don't effect existing customers, is this true? Thanks in advance
Damn this probably should have went in general. My bad yall..
I believe that existing customers are not effected. In the UK tmo is lowering there cap to 50mb (yes that's megabytes) they released a statement that said that existing customers would be un affected and new contracts would

I'm not certain, but I do think it is for new and old customers.
Does it qualify as a material change to your contract? I don't know about that either, material changes might only apply to changes in fees. Anyway, there is a limited time after a material change to a contract to get out without an ETF.
IF you find the answer about new vs old customers, let us know.

I bought my Vibrant w/ a 2 year extension in August. Haven't touched my plan at all since then. I was throttled 2 months ago.
It's for both old and new customers. Then again, I was tethering. They probably know when you're tethering and throttle those people because they have a tether plan they wanna sell.
Are the people not being throttled just using 5gb+ on their device only?
I bought the phone the first day on an upgrade from tmo. I still have the "unlimited" txt and web for 35 dollars from my g1. I started getting the txts in nov.

My buddy uses about 30 gb a month, tethering and all. He hasn't gotten a text yet...
He's a lucky dude. I got the text after 6gb.
I got throttled about 2 months ago. Been with tmo for years. I was dl'ing rom and torrents through 3g. Now all my data intensive apps are set to wifi only. Live & learn. But I think everytime you upgrade you're essentially signing a new contract which may or may not have new terms.
Don't blame me, blame my keyboard's autocorrection algorithm.

does he still have the old $20 android plan or the $25 (or $30 for unlimited) android plus text plan? that may be the difference.
What I forgot to add to my first post is that if you sign a contract for 2 years that says you have 5gb before you are throttled and 6 months into it they change there data plans to cap at 3gb you will be unaffected by the change until you renew your contract
They are required to uphold there end of the contract for the full term so once you sign up for a new contract you are signing up for a 3gb contract or whatever is available at the time.
I'm currently on a month to month plan so I'm not contracted anything that t-mobile decides to do I'm going to be effected regardless of my current standing.

Carrier should be doing that in the first place. A recent FCC ruling made it mandatory for ATT to warn the customer when they are about to go over the limit.
I know I will never use the 10 GB (even though the thread title is tethering limit, I actually do not tether), but having something that I used to have (paying for), ripped out of my hands just like that just doesn't feel good.
We don't have a tethering limit, you can blame those that do tether excessively for the reduction in the limit

It's been debated over many time, and I think the general census is that it is "Unlimited Access " but not "Unlimited Usage". You can access the internet when and where you want, which is the general idea.
From what I understand they don't bill you extra or turn you off, they just throttle you (slow you down) .
I saw the number as 5 gigs, kinda a reasonable number in my book. Even if you were tethering that is a big number if you just surfing and checking email. File sharing, big game downloads, and watching lots of videos would be the only way to hit that number.
Just my two cents

It is true, Ill probably never hit that 5gb (I lightly tether, probably, 5 hours a week). But I only tether because my justification is: my data plan costs more than my home internet plan ($30 vs $15) so I try to use it to its full extent. The market for mobile internet is ridiculous..
I swear, prices between data and text message plans is highway robbery. FCC should really do something (beneficial).

Yea, I hear you there, between my wifes phone and my phone we drop alot on mobile internet, and I do tether when needed, but I by no means abuse it, I use about 200 megs a month, through tmoble. I use anywhere from 5 to 60 gigs through my home internet, comcast caps you at 250 gigs a month.
Both companys are just trying to hold up the abusers, file sharing is a major issue, (if I hit anywhere over 10 gigs at home it is because of file sharing)
The abusers are the issue, when one person uses as much as 200 other users it becomes an issue.
I don't agree with it, but I can totally see why they do it. It won't affect 99.99% of user's. And the ones that it does are probably doing things they aren't supposed to.

Pulling what stuff? This has been said before, T-Mobile will allow unlimited usage for their data plan, nothing states that they will not throttle your speeds. If it stated that they didn't in the past and then changed their minds then people would have room to gripe but that isn't the case. If you do not like their service then choose another cellular provider. I think Sprint offers unlimited 4g access when you pay the extra $20 or $25 on top of the fee for the data usage.
I called them abouta year ago when I started tethering on my g1 (of course I didn't tell them that) and they assured me that there is no such limit or charges. It ready is simply unlimited

The call center reps are not qualified to make that distinction because of their lack of knowledge about the terms of agreement that you had to sign. They will tell you anything to make you happy, that is their job. This is not limited to T-Mobile of course. If you want to a definitive answer then just check your contract. It will state what restrictions there are for the data plan. I had to pull out the contract to make sure I followed the terms of agreement when I was messing with the firmware on a Clear modem they sent me so I could use it with my router and accidentally bricked the modem. I argued for 30 minutes with the rep for a new modem because she believed that messing with firmware for the modem constituted to abusive use of their devices without stating what is abusive use. She sounded pretty new to the job too.

Nothing is stopping you or your family and friends from changing providers. That is why there is a free market, don't like on service provider go to the next and so on and so forth. I am not trying to cause an argument, but the old adage, you can't have one's cake and eat it too, applies here.

They are not doing much because (which I just learned the other day) that taxes on cell phone usage (monthly plan) where I live is stunning 18%.
FCC probably want your bill to be as high as possible.
Now, this thread isn't really about tethering, I started because of the fact that T-mobile is reducing the amount from 10 GB to 5 GB. I understand the fair use policy so an artificial cap is fine with me, but don't lower the cap for everyone just because a few people are tethering to their phone, scale those who use more and charge them more.
Now, you might ask: If you never needed more bandwidth, why do you care?
There's distinction of being punished because you did something wrong yourself and there's being punished as a group because of someone else' mistake. If I can have 10 GB a month, I want to keep it at 10 GB a month irregardless of whether I used it up, it's the principle that counts: I signed up knowing there's 10 GB a month of bandwidth and it needs to stay that way.
I was looking at my account today, and realizing that between my wife and I we use VERY FEW minutes altogether.
The overwhelming majority, and I am talking about 90-95% of our calls are either off-peak or mobile to mobile.
What I am wondering is what is the best way for me to go about lowering this bill. We have 1500 minutes, plus all the unlimited stuff Sprint offers.
I want to keep the unlimited Data, but am not terribly concerned about anything else.
Ideas? Anything at all would be greatly appreciated aside from calling me names and questioning my humanity
I'm not a Sprint employee (soon to be one), but I have found that the 1500 minute plan is the cheapest plan that includes the mobile to mobile talk (I looked into this a few weeks back for myself) and found that there's not really any other options. There is no plan less than 1500 minutes that includes data and text.

I work for Sprint corporate and I hate to say it, but the $129.99 Shared Everything Data Plan 1500 Minute one is the lowest plan you may have if you have one or more smartphones or one of the 3 Samsung Instinct Series devices on your wireless account with us. Does my plan sound good??? Or is there some hiccup I'm gonna run into??

Yeah, you can get any corporate discount without having to sign a new contract. You should be able to do it through your employer (or where ever you get your discount from) and it will take effect without a new contract.
All else fails...call Sprint and have them work it out.
I've got a Citibank discount of 27% off, but it's only on the main line and my bill is still $178/month on 1500 minute shared. (I have 4 lines total.)

The service will require a special Android-based phone. Calls and SMSs will be routed via VOIP when on wifi and via cell towers otherwise.

Summery:
The phone will primary use wifi for voice and texting and if no wifi is within range it will jump over to the Sprint network for voice, texting, and 3g data (no data cap). I guess you will need a CDMA android phone. Not sure yet if you have to buy a special phone from them but I'm sure someone will come up with a rom to flash to a Sprint android phone.
If this is all true it would be great to have one phone number, text, and unlimited data for only $19 with VoIP! I'll sell my G2x and find a phone that will work on this in a heart beat.
Let me know your thoughts.
I think I'm going to get one. If the phone if just an LG Optimus maybe someone can help me dump the ROM and flash it to a normal Sprint Optimus so you don't have to buy there phone.
From what I've read, you need a phone with special hardware sold by Republic, and judging from the picture on the website, it's probably going to be the LG Optimus S/V.
If it pans out and works like they say it will, I'd considering switching from Virgin Mobile. I'm already using the Optimus V, so it wouldn't be that much of a change for me.
I wonder how much they are going to charge for the phone?

How much cellular usage is too much?
It depends. Even assuming 0% wifi usage, for example, you could consume 550 minutes, send 150 texts, and download 300 megabytes of data without crossing the community’s fair use threshold. Everyone's usage patterns will be different, but we're confident you’ll be amazed at how little cellular you actually use when you have a phone that makes it easy to leverage the power of your Wi-Fi networks.

The pay as you go plan is 50 cents/day for unlimited web, only on the days you use it. It's 20 cents per minute for voice calls, but if you froze the dialer (or never used it) and didn't give out the Boost number, voice would never get used.
Since GrooVeIP will work over 3G or Wifi, your max cost per month (after phone and GrooVeIP) would be $15.50.

Sounds like a pain in the ass compared to Republic Wireless's option just to save $3.50 a month. Why do people love there iphone so much? It's easy.
The current phone offering and Sprint network is a deal breaker for me, however.

The irony is that Boost uses Sprint too.

Yeah it's a pain ... I'm just saying the idea isn't new. Only the implementation is.

Yup and if you go over and don't get back to their allowed usage within a certain time frame, you get dropped.
whos with me ??
Just switched my plan over, 1 2 3
price stayed the same, now I can use 10-15-20 gbs a month! woot
So it stayed at 49.99 a month?
switched over yesterday and i'm spending $30 on the plan in addition to the talk and text i already have. saving $5/month now and i dont even use the wifi tethering
I'm on the value plan so im paying $5 less for going unlimited as opossed to my 5 Gigs of data
When I switched the tmo rep said the offer would only be available for a limited time, even when they discontinue the offer whoever got it will still be truly unlimited. I don't know if he was just trying to get me to upgrade the other lines though. Any who get it why it last!

Talking advantage now! Thanks! :victory:
I hate Telus. I pay 30 bucks for 6 gigs but they could care less if I tether. They even told me they have no way to check lol...I guess that's a plus. Besides I can't dent 6 gigs if I try...I live in so many wifi hotspots I never use data
I called twice to switch to their new really unlimited plan, and they both said "its the same as 5gb (the one I have), but without tethering. You'll pay $5 less, but you'll still get throttled at 5gb"
Obviously he had no idea what I was talking about. I want to switch and I can't do it from the 'my account' app. Any other way to switch? Will I have to go to the store :banghead: ?
Also, did you notice any changes in speed after switching? (even though I think you have to wait for your current data cycle to end to see the changes)

I had a grandfathered in data plan so all of my lines are 20$ a month for 5g throttle .. But I hit that **** every month
So I switched my line to the unlimited today and yeah it 10 bones more but damn its going to be nice..!!
And i was tethered to my laptop for a good 30 minutes no problems ..
I was on the 5G and the rep told me that this data plan would cost me $20.. but then again that was the four rep i talked to cause none of them knows a thing

It's $20 bucks for value plans, and $30 for Classic plans. I'm on value plan so I was paying $10 for 2g so now I'm paying $10 more for unlimited. I think its a pretty sweet deal

My apologies as this isnt really device specific although I do use a Note 3 with ATT. I have had a family plan for at least 8 years now, and have always been on unlimited plan for my line (Im the acct holder). Yesterday I logged into my account to see that it was now a '10gb Family Shared Plan'. I call them up and they can't tell me why or how this changed but will be looking into it.
Ironically last month was the first time I surpassed the 5gb throttle limit. Its almost as though they are purposely downgrading my plan.
Anyways not too happy about this and hopefully its a relatively smooth transition back. Just annoyed this 'randomly' happened. Has anyone else experienced something like this lately?

Have you been tethering? I've heard of it happening when excessive tethering was used without a tethering plan. I was warned once. I dont risk it anymore. I love my family unlimited too much.

No, never tether. I only used 5 gigs last month because I got a new car with bluetooth (yeh, welcome to the 21st century right! lol) and stream for 2 hours a day since i commute a lot. I probably used just over 5gigs though as I got the text notifying me of my usage just days before the end of the billing cycle.

That is unusual then. Hopefully it was a mistake. I've gone over 5gb a few times. My daughter did 12gb once. I mean it's unlimited. Right?

It does and it's actually cheaper per month.

Actually everyone on family share plan with 10 or more gig data automatically got switched over, I had mine changed to it and the lady told me everyone would be switched over automatically. I'm sure they will switch u back, but we're probably hoping people would be willing to sacrifice unlimited for cheaper overall.

Here's a few things to note.
Unlimited is not called Unlimited anymore. It's called Unlimited access, but will be throttled at 3gb.
If you tether, you will be notified by text that you will be switched to a tethering plan the next month. (had this happen lol)
AT&T can switch you of unlimited anytime they like, read the fine print contact.
On a side note, I was on unlimted until they keep throttling me. Coming off that slow unlimited access made life better for me.
Sent from my SM-N900A using XDA Free mobile app
I still don't understand why people on ATT are trying to cling on to their Unlimited data. The people on Verizon have good enough reasons to (Verizon doesn't throttle or get pissy if you consume 10s of gigs per month, for now anyway). But on ATT your Unlimited plans are basically pointless at this point. After 3-4GB, your data essentially becomes useless after the throttle. For all intents and purposes, you can't tether. And it's actually cheaper to get access to more high-speed data every month on the newer plans. They literally made switching over to limited data a much better deal (or made keeping Unlimited a worse one, depending on how you look at it).
Just switched mine, got 10gb, tethering included and actually cheaper.

Keeping unlimited.
The catch is that if you go on the shared minutes planes, your phones are no longer subsidized... So if you upgrade your phones every two years, the cost ends up being the same, if not greater when paying monthly for the phones. This in my calculations is about a wash in terms of cost, however you do not get to keep your phones at the end. These are great plans if you byop however.

You keep your phone, just pay the remainder off. 9 out of 10 times phone has scratches, which means no giving it to therm. The thing is, you might pay the same amount in the long run (I won't because I'm saving $120 per month which equals $1440 in a year, at end of year I only owe $248 left on phone. Which leaves me with $1192 in savings.) Then I get another upgrade, which is every 12 months instead of 24. Plus no upgrade or activation fees. So tell me where this is a bad deal for me at all?
Oh and by the way its not shared minutes, in fact is unlimited talk and text.

It sounds like a better deal for you for sure. The way i'm set up to switch to next save me only $20/month before taxes. I have four lines so I get 2 upgrades a year. So I pay 240 more per year plus about 200 for each phone. This equals 640 a year with two phones. If the average phone on next is 30 a month, then there is the wash. My minutes are not unlimited, but on all lines mobile to mobile is unlimited and I rarely use more than 300. Plus they roll over so I have lots banked. Texting is also unlimited. Plus I can sell the phones at the end (I never do, though, and have 8 phones to sell or get rid of of you include the 2 phones each of my two children have to play on).
I guess how good of a deal next is depends on how good of a deal you had before. ...
They're absolute garbage. I had a 1GB family plan (you know, wifi everywhere and I never even pass that 1GB at all), so.i called them up to see why my bill was a little high then this girl was telling me that she has a better plan for me. 2GB for $5 less. I was like "hell yeah. Switch up now". Next bill was $15 over. LOL
Called them up again and downgraded back to my ole 1GB. I don't know why the lying. Do they really think people are that stupid? If you ever call them, first thing you wanna do is ask the employee about their ID number. Just say " I'd like your ID number". They can't say no. They'll get in trouble. So when an employee screws you over you just call them and ask for a manager and tell them about the employee that did it and give them the number to identify him/her. Other than that names don't work.

I gave up my unlimited plan for the 10gig plan a month ago, I added my dad's phone to the data and we are saving $80 a month now over the old plan and no more throttle or tethering is gtg without root. I'm actually pleased.

Att almost had me, I was about to let go of my unlimited data, I wasn't gonna save much since I wabted the 20 gb shareplan, but then I found out about the scam, I have 5 lines, sounded good to only pay 15 for each additional but how about when my mother in law wants to update for some 50 dollar renovate contract new smartphone, she never gets the most expensive, the point is that If I later want to upgrade for the best cheap offer new phone then it rises 25 for each line so instead of 228 that I pay I will end up paying 328, or if I get the next for every account, lets see at least 27 a month for 5 lines, wow arround 360, now how in hell thats gonna save me money.
