those having stock recovery, to update:-
-Download the OTA package here
-Rename it to update.zip, and place it on the root of your internal storage
-Shut down your phone, and reboot into the bootloader by holding volume up and powering on
-Choose "recovery" from the list, and select it with the power button
When you see the red triangle press volume up and choose to update

I posted it over on the other thread just for those following it, gave credit to you.
This one patches everything in the /system/app folder, the /system/frame-works, and a few random files in other sub-dirs.
It also replaces/patches the recovery again and includes the script to re-flash it every time you change it.
Here's the patch script
Just rooted with new update. so everything is fine. i'll get back to the nightlies then.
cheers
Awesome
Thanks deeren.
Updated through stock recovery and everything’s fine, still rooted. I will have to re-flash clockwork again, but that was expected.
Sorry for the noob question, but how do I apply this update? I tried downloading through the browser and the download fails. \do \i donload with PC and put on device manually?
Can you just put this on your SD card and go to Rom Manager and select Install ROM from SD card while you point it to this zip file?
Also does it disable your root, and then you have to root again?

Yes, you will have to root again (at least I had to). I used stock recovery because I think that way is safer, i don’t know about Rom Manager.

i believe once you press vol up to move the cursor onto update, you need to press the power button to select update.
I dont get the option to update. It just stays on the screen with the android and a triangle with a "!"

Ok, I have been thrown for a loop and need some help....
I had a Sprint Hero Rooted on 2.1 the .5 sprint update
Tried to run the new update but it kept getting corrupt.
Did a Nandroid backup
So I reverted back to the .5 RUU
Then it wanted me to update to the old .6 update, so I did
Hoping then I would upgrade to the new .6 but it was not able to find a new update?
Wanted to restore my nandroid update.
When I try to boot into the recovery mode I get a picture of a phone with a red Explanation mark in a triangle.
There is a bunch of people on the net that say they have seen or gotten it, but no one says how to get rid of it? So I can not get in to recovery mode at all.
Tried the home+power boot
Tried the volume down + power then home
always ends in the same screen with no recovery.
Tried multiple times to install the .5 RUU
Reset phone
never can get back there to the recovery?
Phone will boot fine into 2.1 and run fine..
Anyone have any ideas, I have tried everything I can think of.
Thanks
Did u try placing the recovery on ur SD card and flashing it threw terminal on ur phone
Root-Hack-Mod-Always™
You lost root, as far as I remember the .6 update was to block the corrent rooting efforts that you see around here, thats why the rooting instruction say to go back to the .5 ruu.
The corrupted update your getting is just sprints server being bogged down.
What you need todo is go back and re-root your phone. Dont worry about the update untill it gets released into one of the current roms or until you here that its safe todo without losing root.

Thanks, I can't believe I missed that! I had never tried a backup before root, so I did not think about that. Now I know and hopefully this will help someone that googles this issue, as there is never a clear answer until yours.
Thanks again...
So in closing of this thread:
if you are trying to get into recovery and see "Phone with Explanation mark" image.
it's because your phone is not rooted
So root your phone and it's all good
Also If you ever run an ruu on your phone you can kiss your root good bye no matter what version you do. but if you have nand backups you can reroot your phone and then restore one of your backups since there stored on your sdcard.

Correction: If you see this symbol, it means you don't have a custom recovery image in the phone. You can actually be rooted and still get that symbol if you haven't yet flashed a custom recovery after you rooted. You need to have a custom recovery (that requires root) to avoid getting that symbol when you try to boot into recovery.
Most rooting methods on here automatically include flashing a custom recovery as one of the steps, so this isn't really a big issue....but I just wanted to clarify the specifics of this for anyone else who reads.

only way can get there is through flash clockworkmod recovery then select either reboot in recovery mode or turn of handset and restart with home and power button, what ever flash clockworkmod recovery does to make it work as soon as it has been used i am guessing it is deleted or modified,
i have tried running it then checking files on sd card but cant see anything different

The recovery console isn't on your SD card, it's flashed to a partition inside your phone's memory. So you won't see anything different on your card.
And if you can boot into recovery by "restart with home and power button" like you say, then it's working as it should -- that's how you get into recovery.

just had a friendly member point out what i was starting to suspect the problem lies with the custom recovery being flashed back to stock on every restart, the shell command here
/system/etc/install-recovery.sh this stops any custom recovery on reboot. any advice on what tools to edit or remove
Delete that file when you get root I guess. Our as soon as you reboot into clockwork recovery, flash a rom. Use nfinitefx if you want a stock one
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
I always had root that was where the confusion was, what i did not know was the script was running with every boot of the handset and removing the recovery that was there as it was identified as unofficial and exclamation mark could be down to me using many methods to flash i may have renamed original recovery so when it goes to exclamation it is because cant find original recovery whether handset is rooted or not.

would that have worked? i thought about it many many times but as i had never flashed before was unsure how many times phone would reset and if it did before it was installed could i lose my recovery.
on the plus side the 2 months i have spent trying to solve this i have a much broader view of the workings of my handset and without the many members like yourself who take the time to reply and try to help others i would have given up a long time ago.

I'm sure if you deleted that script a custom recovery would have stuck

Hi guys. I am having a bit of an issue here.
I just got my DX a couple days ago. I have a buddy that has been into modding with his D1 for a while, and he recently got a Fascinate. He convinced me to try doing some stuff with my phone...
I rooted my phone successfully. I then wanted to install the DX Invertnito theme. It said I needed to Deadex my phone. I got the xultimate 2.2.2 deodex pack and successfully deodexed my phone. I then downloaded the zip file for the Invertnito theme. I put the zip file on my phones sd card as stated in the instructions. I then downloaded Koush's DX Bootstrapper from the market and Clockwork Rom manager. Installing the theme automatically through the rom manager didnt work, but the phone did boot normally nonetheless. I then decided to go directly through the Bootstrapper app [clicked the recovery mode right on the menu out of two options]. The phone instantly shut down, then booted into the clockworkmod recovery menu. I followed the instructions given to install the Invertnito from the .zip file on the zd card. I clicked install on that file. Everything seemed to work fine to this point. Installation successful.
Unfortunately, now the phone will not boot at all.... It loads the Motorola M logo and stays there. I've tried waiting for 30 min on the logo and it just doesn't move. If I remove/replace the battery, the phone will then load the clockworkmod recovery menu again just like it did after it shutdown from running the first time. I've tried clearing cache, restarting the phone, replacing the battery 20 times. Always stuck on boot M screen. Sometimes it will go the the Motorola bootloader screen, but when i click reboot system, it just gets stuck on the M logo.
Any help would be appreciated here. I'm hoping I haven't bricked my phone somehow. I didn't expect this as I can't find anyone else who installed this same theme have the same problem. Is there something I can do to get it back to normal? Is it possible to somehow get my OS back to clean stock and go from there?
Thanks
Did you do a nandroid backup before loading the theme?
Unfortunately, no. I just read of someone having a similar issue though. Said he used RSD Lite 4.8 and an SBF and he was able to get back into his phone. Not sure how to dgo about any of that though.

I have debated if I would just wait for the official DL30 update. But I bit the bullet. I decided on the 4th. I was having issues getting the custom recovery to stick, so I ended up just combining both of them. It almost seemed like there was file consistancy checks upon the fascinate booting up. I have gathered my information and files from XDA-Developers. That is a great site for anything about smartphones.
All credit goes to nitsuj17, OMJ, Syn Ack, and punk.kaos this is just what I needed to do to get my phone rooted and flashed with punk.kaos's DL30 ROM.

THIS IS JUST THE STEPS I DID TO GET MY PHONE TO FROYO.
THIS IS FOR VERIZON ONLY PLEASE DONT USE IF YOU ARE NOT ON VERZION
****************************************************************************************
Files Needed:
Samsung Drivers
Odin
CWMRecovery_DJ05_DL09.tar.md5
update.zip
su-2.3.6.1+busybox1.19.zip
DL30_leak.zip
new_cwm.zip
1.) Install the Samsung Drivers
2.) Place Odin3 v1.3.exe and CWMRecovery_DJ05_DL09.tar.md5 in the same folder on your pc
3.) Place the update.zip, su-2.3.6.1+busybox1.19.zip, DL30-leak.zip, and new_cwm.zip in the root of your sdcard (root means not in any folder just on the sdcard)
4.) Put your phone in download mode by taking out the battery. Then hold the volume down button while plugging it into the usb cable attached to your computer
5.) Open Odin
***************************************************************************************
THIS IS IMPORTANT > DO NOT TOUCH ANY SETTINGS IN ODIN, ONLY USE THE PDA BUTTON AND THE START BUTTON.
IF YOU TOUCH ANY OTHER BUTTONS IN ODIN YOU COULD BRICK YOUR PHONE.
***************************************************************************************
6.) So press the pda button then select CWMRecovery_DJ05_DL09.tar.md5
7.) Press start (Note this will reboot your phone when complete)
8.) Power the phone on while holding the entire volume button down. Let go of the power button when the Samsung logo shows but keep holding the whole volume button.
9.) This will boot you into the stock recovery. Use the volume rocker to move down to apply sdcard:update.zip then press the home key
10.) After it applies you will be in clockworkmod recovery
11.) Use the volume rocker to navigate to install zip from sdcard. This time though you will use the back key to select. (I know it is annoying that there are two different select keys but get used to it)
12.) Navigate down and select choose zip from sdcard
13.) Navigate to su-2.3.6.1+busybox1.19.zip press back to select it
14.) Navigate down and select Yes – Install su-2.3.6.1+busybox1.19.zip
15.) Once that is done press the search button to go back a menu
16.) Next, go back to the main menu and choose "Wipe Data/Factory Reset", do this twice for good measure. Then choose "Wipe Cache Partition", do it twice for good measure, it doesn't hurt anything.
17.) Once in Recovery, choose "Install zip from sdcard" > "Choose zip from sdcard" > Then locate your "DL30.zip" file that you downloaded earlier. Choose it and then hit YES. Once complete, takes less than a couple minutes usually.
18.) FINALLY, choose "Install zip from sdcard" > "Choose zip from sdcard" > Then locate your "new_cwm.zip" file you downloaded earlier. Choose it and hit YES. YOU ARE DONE!!!!
Reboot the phone and enjoy your rooted, bloated, official copy of Verizon Froyo.
For the record, this update ONLY works with DJ05 and DL09 radio. Meaning you must download and flash it to your phone if you do not have it or you won't get texts and probably won't be able to make calls.
I am working on my own hybrid ROM that is taken from punk.kaos’s and adrynalyne’s customer ROMs.
It will remove all the bing from the phone but will keep Samsung’s TouchWiz. I am also thinking about integrating the Hulu app.
Stay here and I will keep you updated.

At no point during steps 7,7,8 can you let the phone boot into the os... everyone is getting screwed up with this (including me). the op should have pointed this out. something in dl09 doesn't let you boot into cw the old way. flash cw via odin, then stock recovery update zip, then boot into cw, then flash froyo, then flash new cw. Confusing I know, someone around here explained it better.

All,
I have read these forums for months and now finally wanted to root and update to 2.2.
I haven't found the answer yet regarding what base setup I need to have on my Fascinate?
Can I do this with the following?
Firmware version:
2.1-update1
Baseband version:
S:i500.04 V.EA28
Kernel version:
2.6.29
Build number:
SCH-I500.EA28
I am sure you all might laugh however someone who hasn't payed real close attention would like to know the answer.

This worked for me finally, but I had to go completely back to stock first to make it work.
Good write up Thanks!
You should just flash DL09 back and backup and remove Active Care...keep EA28 out lol that'd what I've done...then again I don't use pattern lock so the emergency call bug isn't an issue.

Extract the update.zip and place it in your External SD Card and then use Acer Recovery and ClockworkMod, first you must be rooted then enter Acer recovery and install the ClockworkMod Recovery rev1.3.4 by thor2002ro and then enter recovery via reboot either by just pressing the 'Reboot into Recovery' on the right or off your machine and hold power button and Vol - together until some texts start popping up in the left upper corner.
After that you navigate with the volume and power buttons power button is OK/Enter and volume is up or down.
Scroll down to and select 'install zip from sdcard' then select 'choose zip from sdcard' and once you enter there you should see the update.zip that you put in you External SD Card and you select and then select it again and Voila! Done! Reboot!
Hope it helped!

I used to have a 1.139.04 version of ROM, using one sir Vache's links, I was able to manually update to a 1.141.04. Can I flash this new ROM without going back to 1.139.04? If no, how do I go back to 1.139.04?
I have been trying to upgrade to Android 3.1 and tried all ROMs posted here (i.e. Acer_A500_4.010.38_COM_GEN1, 1.016.01 to Acer_A500_1.016.01_1.139.04_COM_GEN1, and, SD_Acer_A500_4.010.22_COM_GEN1 to Acer_A500_4.010.22_4.010.38_COM_GEN1) and none seem to work. When I start to flash, I always get an Android character carrying and exclamation mark sign which I presume to mean that the ROM cannot be flashed. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Aris

Yes. Check post 7 for more info
Thi one is available, at long last, to me as an OTA update.
Not sure I want to at the moment though.. I'll wait and see how many bugs people complain about.
Thanks Green, and Xdachris for the mirror! Clickity click!
What benefits-improvements with this Update
have been seen?
Appears as though hardware decode in mp4 h264 is now working.
I'm no longer providing support for this thread due to time constrains with school, thank you for your support and it been nice sharing this method with you all. I may be gone but this method has still been reported as working, but it is possible that the next updates pushed to your phone might break the rooting and this method might not work anymore. But there is no harm in trying, at most you get an error in recovery saying file is invalid.
This method works on the released ICS rom from Germany and I would expect it to work for the rest of the ICS roms due for release..
This method does not increase the binary counter or causes a yellow exclamation mark
Update :
Due to rising numbers of phone being bricked based on rumors and stuff, I strongly suggest NOT trying to use any nandroid backup or restore on this CWM and it is best we keep CWM out of our devices to do major I/O stuff. So far I have never seen anyone bricked their devices on this small rooting/unrooting process but JUST DO NOT MAKE BACKUPS OR RESTORES!
Rooting
Download the Files first and put in your EXTERNAL SD
Reboot to stock recovery. - Shutdown your device completely, press and hold Vol Up + Power button + Home, releasing the power buttons once you see the Samsung GALAXY Note N7000 screen but continue to hold the Vol Up and Power buttons still until you enter recovery
Choose apply update from external storage. - Touch the screen as if you are using the phone to choose the options.
Choose CWM.zip and wait until CWM recovery appear.
( From this point on, the volume rockers and power buttons do not work! It is now a Touch interface like how you use the phone normally )
Choose install zip from external SD
Choose and Install SU-Busybox-Installer.zip
Reboot
You are done and now your device is Rooted
Unroot
Download this File first and put in your EXTERNAL SD
Reboot to recovery.- Shutdown your device completely, press and hold Vol Up + Power button + Home, releasing the power buttons once you see the Samsung GALAXY Note N7000 screen but continue to hold the Vol Up and Power buttons still until you enter recovery
Choose apply update from external storage.- Touch the screen as if you are using the phone to choose the options
Choose CWM.zip and wait until CWM recovery appear.
( From this point on, the volume rockers and power buttons do not work! It is now a Touch interface like how you use the phone normally )
Choose install zip from External SD
Choose and Install SU-Uninstaller-Signed.zip
Reboot
You are done and now your device is Unrooted
Partial Root
Alright i managed to obtain partial root myself and a fix for the Partial root is quite simple. You can install SuperSU by Chainfire and update the root. would fix the Partial root. Once you install this.. DO NOT USE the Superuser app and DO NOT uninstall the SuperUser app. Use SuperSU from now.
SuperSU - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.supersu&hl=en
MOD Edit: cwm.zip removed from the attachments, read Entropy512's post.
Thanks, but does this install CWM as well? id like to know so that I can go straight to flashing roms from it
are you sure this works ? can anyone confirm ?

Works perfectly. Just rooted stock ICS.
Got a brand new Note in the box here.....
Trying to get things straight. Seems like I have two options now for rooted official ICS.
1. This method. Update official ICS Via PC odin (no binary counter, ect) and then follow above instructions.
2. Root stock gb via old method (not sure what that is yet) and then use the mobile odin proceedures w/ new ICS CF kernel?
Is the end result gonna be the same?
Bonus question for noob: what is binary counter and red triangle/exclamation point?

thanks man!
Did you just copy this thread?
Oh well. No harm done I guess. Of course it works. It's a method for all android phones. Temporary cwm so you can copy busybox to /system.
Yeah it looks like it, but since it actually works i can't see why that would be a bad thing. But i would give the original author credits in the first post; that is if you copied it.

Yes you will end up with the same result if you take either one of the 2 ways to root
Binary counter is a Samsung measurement of how many times you flashed custom firmwares using PC Odin, and the yellow (not red ) triangle is just a logo to further show that you indeed flashed custom firmware
However, the binary counter will not increase (and therefore no yellow triangle will appear) if you:
1. Flash stock firmware with PC Odin
2. Flash using Mobile Odin app by ChainfireXDA
3. Flash using CWM recovery
I got binary counted to 1 with yellow triangle after flashing ics stock from alba.can i use this method to erase counter and triangle?

Drat?
I didn't have GB root because my previous version had root, but I $%*^ screwed
up and let KIES update it to 2.3.6 and I've got too much work to screw around with back flashing wiping etc.
I went ahead and let kies update to ics, now, my question, will this method work, or will I still have to go though all the other to get it to work.
I see it works on stock ICS, but is that after kies, or after you update via pc odin?

Not many ways to have a drastic difference from the method but hey it works well.

This method works as long as you are on Stock ICS.. Can't really go wrong really.
so i did and have root and root works..
now my question is....
given that we get temp CWM..can i use the temp CWM to flash radios?
AND so if i want to flash LP6 radio via CWM will the steps be.
load Stock recovery
flash CWM.zip in stock recovery
load CWM
flash lp6 radio
will that work?
=============================
After no one answered i took the plunge...
Yes
so can confirm that the above procedure will work
PS: Am amazed how this is not in the sticky
Can anyone tell me any issues with using the CWM offered in this thread??? as in any issues with flashing other roms?? etc??
I fail to see?
The only issue is that CWM is not permanent but u can easily re-enable it by flashing it again...
again..dont understand why ppl are not paying attention to this thread as is great!
how come i only got partial root? i cannot paste into system

Try rooting again.. Are you sure your file manager app was given permission? Cause this thing is practically fool proof.

hmmm.... didn't work for me. CWM looks for update.zip so i renamed it as such. installed and rebooted to CWMR, no touch menu. same old blue colored menu. install su-binary, stuck at unmounting /system = not rooted.
