Vibrant update is via mini kies - Epic 4G General

androidcentral: Froyo for the Vibrant being updated through Samsung Mini Kies ... Good luck! http://bit.ly/eZHa6v
Sent from The Chaotic Void.

They can't even do it ota? They held the update for so long then say they are going to update but they make it as hard as they can. This doesn't surprise me.

There is obviously a problem updating OTA. Rather they release it this way as soon as they can and then OTA when they are sure its stable.

It's not even 2.2.1.
My coworker just updated and he only received 2.2. I would have figured they could have figured out that minor build for this.

hahahahahaha, figures they wouldn't give 2.2.1.

And after a little browsing of the captivate forum it looks like they are having a lot of problems with both kies and the froyo update.

Lol, so basically it breaks down like this:
-Tmobile received a ton of bad press over entire delay of Froyo.
-They cave and release the update that Samsung had given them MONTHS ago but they didn't release because of z4root and they only release it through kies so that enthusiasts will STFU while a majority will not receive the easily rootable update.
-They announce that there will be a mandatory OTA update later, which will obviously be 2.2.1, updating everyone to the z4root proof Froyo.

OTA July 16th??

I just saw on android central that the Eris will be getting an update on July 16th. I just rooted not to long ago and I love it. Just wanted to know if it is possible for me to still get the OTA update now that I have rooted?
remember how there was a few people
who got that update a bout 2 weeks ago?
thats what this is. just the rest of them
are getting it.
once someone who gets it can pull the
url, then the devs will be able to put
it into their roms.
Ivans 1.2?
Ok, Thanks!!!
Is this just an update fixing all the garbage problems with the 2.1 OTA? Took 'em long enough. Good thing I rooted the day I got the OTA because it was terrible.

for some odd reason I doubt it
Believe it (an OTA update) when you (or others) see it.
Hopefully I will have my new phone by the time this comes out. I simply had crazy issues with the Eris and am going to get a different phone.
I am going to assume that it will be the end of the month before everyone gets the OTA.
It'll probably a rolling update across the country since the last big update ordeal crashed a few servers. If you jump on Verizon's site after the rolling update is done you should be bale to update by downloading that way. One of the reasons the was also such a wait for the 2.1 update was there was a big jump from 1.5 to 2.1.
It'll be interesting to see what all happens with the update, and rooted phones.

OTA Halted for Froyo Update Instead...

BGR is reporting this...check it out.
boygeniusreport.com/2010/07/19/htc-droid-incredible-htc-email
beat me!, arg
Sweet, great news!
Schweet! Now that both my DI's are rooted up, just have to sit and wait for the OTA to be acquired and rooted, and I'll have all the goodness with root to boot.
So what will this mean for those of us that downloaded the ota update and rerooted when this gets released?
Will someone be able to rip froyo out and give it to us in the form of a root friendly rom?
Way cool...glad I waited.
JC
PS Still don't know or have heard of any non-devs getting the OTA update...
This is awesome news, already have the leaked OTA applied, but now getting Froyo, makes everything that much better.
Hah! I was speaking about this last night with a few of my fellow HTC Incredible owners. Makes sense they would bundle up both updates into one. I've waited this long, I'll keep waiting till someone repackages this up so those of us with root can make the transition smoothly.
I hope this is not just another rumor.
Not to be a Debbie Downer, but I'll believe this when I see it. Hopefully it turns out to be true.
Mach3te, I'm with you, buddy...waited since April 28th for this, can wait a little longer for the rooted version of the whole banana.
jc
I will believe it when I see it.
Well considering we have a moderately working EVO 2.2 Sense Rom...I'd start to believe it. Seems the Incredible version would only need minor software tweaks to work. So...I don't get how you're all so pesimistic. The only reason our port isn't 100% working now is because of lack of drivers and closed source-ness of HTC.
That Evo rom was a dirty port from the Desire. It has the wrong version kernel, and no Froyo drivers. That would be like saying Froyo must be close because of the Sky Raider rom.
Wonder if applying the Froyo OTA over the leaked OTA would brick some incredibles. As it's briking phones that apply the update over the update.
Will Froyo address the bluetooth stack issues some people have been reporting?

Yay!
Definitely glad I did not do the OTA, I am sure someone will package the extras up into a rom for the time being, and then FROYO! (without a voided warranty )
No offense, but rooting your phone and installing a rom voids your warranty just as much.

Ok I upgraded to the 2.2 upgrade off of my droid world every thing is running great. My question if will I receive the official ota considering this isn't a rom or port?

OTA update will/should come threw just fine. Now haivng it install correctly could be a whole different story tho as we DO NOT know the specifics on the file that was posted over the weekend everyone jumped on before it was taken down.
Put it this way tho I've had engineering units from mfgs in the past and even those update correctly OTA so I wouldn't be to concerned about it. Plus if won't take long for someone to actuaaly grab and post the update.zip once it is pushed out.
Yeah that would be good. I still haven't received mine.

Has anyone actually gotten the OTA froyo yet? I've read things that said it was within 24 hours of the 20th... Also, when you say loading a custom theme, that doesn't mean a launcher right? Like LauncherPro?
OTA is not out yet. All previous info about release dates was just rumors.
And no, custom themes doesn't mean launchers, since those are just apps. It means actually modifying system files like framework-res.apk for different status bar, notification area, etc...
You really don't know as every company handles it differently and Moto for some reason is trying to keep the device locked down. However if you look at past phones (at least the two Androids I have had)
G1 normally you got the option to upgrade but you would lose root or would have to wait for JesusFreke to get the file and root it.
The Droid Eris there were actually 3 leaks to 2.1 all which prevented you from getting the OTA because of the boatloader #, however a couple of weeks after they finished updating everyone HTC released an OTA for all leakers (which allowed everyone to gain root conveniently enough if they wanted to downgrade and get root)
So really no one knows except Moto but normally leakers get it one way or another either through OTA or having someone upload the OTA as an update.zip file and you flash it to your phone. Hope that helps and wasn't too much of a history lesson lol

Summer ends September 23rd, so I am guessing very late summer. Probably some time around the second week of September, if not that last week of summer......hopefully not later than that.

Galaxy S Official Froyo coming mid September

http://www.areamobile.de/news/16376-android-2-2-fuer-galaxy-s-froyo-update-kommt-mitte-september
This german site apparantly has first-hand information that Samsung is planning to roll out the Froyo update mid-September, via Kies of course...
This makes me wonder how close to final the JPC update was...
Also, Kies ist just downloading an update (and taking forever to do it) which might also point at things approaching some kind of big release. I have no idea whether the GPS fixes and Lag fixes will be included in this mid-September release, but I'd guess it's pretty unlikely since the last info from Samsung was that they are "looking into it" implying that they don't really know yet. Maybe we'll at least see some improvement, test runs with Jm6, Jm7 and JPc indicate that GPS performance is being worked on at least.
We'll see what September will give us and then start hoping for October updates...
I'm watching the new version of Kies trickle on to my PC as I type... I was thinking the same... is this a new Kies which won't brick Bell user's phones when they try to upgrade to Froyo!? It seems finding out what's new will take a while though... been downloading this update for about an hour already... and still have 37meg to go! S

I suppose this is in line with the same line of announcements that were stating that a Korean Froyo would be available by end of August...
Mine just finished. So far all it's telling me is that I can't update from JPC...well...that#s not exactly new, but it also isn't mid-September yet...^^
I"m kinda noob @ android stuff , atm I got the Galaxy S rooted with lag fix is kies the only possibility to get the new offical froyo soon? so yes , is there anyway a good tutorial for how to use kies..
Thanks

I definitely think delaying past mid-September is a bad move. Many other high end phones using the official 2.2 builds for about a month or more.
Then again, the announcement on Korean Froyo turned out to give false hope to a guy like me. Someone was saying how Optus would be getting this because he heard from an Optus rep that they were. I stated at that time there are 3 days left in August and Korea hadn't been upgraded now we are entering the weekend and will probably end the weekend waking up on the 6th of Sept without Froyo, so if everything else gets delayed the same amount of time...it doesn't mean great things for the rollout.
That said, I do think the hardware is similar enough that I was originally surprised to hear they might get Froyo as many as two weeks before the next countr(y/ies). Maybe they will condense the rollout timeframe.
My Kies doesn´t find new version. Can anybody post the version number of the new one?

Eclair to Froyo: How often do phones check?

Hey all,
Quick question. Does anyone know how often or how our phones query the server for update checks? Is the software first downloaded before asking us if we want to upgrade? Does the sync icon light up while it is downloading? Does our battery charge need to over x to before the software either downloads and/or notify us?
I'm curious as to how the entire process works.
Thanks.

I have an Evo, but I follow the tech news. Software updates are released in waves so that if there are issues with an update, they are isolated and they can stop sending them out. Essentially, the first wave are the guinea pigs. I'm not sure how they decide who gets them, but I'm pretty sure it's random. You will be notified on your own when you can grab the update. It starts on the 21st and everyone should have the update by the 25th. Of course, you can probably just find the update online once it's out and do it yourself:

When the update is available to your phone, it will download it silently in the background. Once the download is complete, you will get a notification that an update is ready to install. As long as you have enough battery left, you will have the option to install it. Otherwise you will be prompted to plug into your charger.
As far as the frequency your phone checks for updates, I'm not sure other than at boot time.
Sent from an Epic I haven't bricked yet.
Also, I believe the updates are 'pushed', which is to say, Sprint contacts your phone directly not vice versa.
Given how infrequent updates are, having your phone poll for them would be a wasted process.
Our phones already poll for app updates through the market and the update is hosted on googles servers.
I don't think it is too far fetched that our phones are notified somehow through this process?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
It would make sense, with the 'wave' method mentioned above, that it's just pushed. Thats the fun! Back when I used to odin to D*27 to let it OTA DI18, it would happen really randomly, anywhere from instant to half an hour... never waited longer though, as its open to request, I just 'check for updates' of it was taking too long. Either way, unless you are one of the first wave, I would wait for XDA's Devs to look over the one from the first wave, and then DL their update... Im sure they will get one from the first wave... I will probly Odin to DI18 tomorrow night and wait, just for fun, as I do agree there is an attraction to that, kind of like when you get a surprise PS3 update that gives you some new unlocked functionality... reminds you why you bought it... course with this phone, we would feel that way if it were more timely, but hey, theres the future...

I don't believe they would do it that way. A vast majority of users are on the latest while there is probably a minority who didn't update past DI07. They get the latest first and then get the stragglers in the later days.

A software update to EB13 (Froyo) is available for the Samsung Epic 4G via Google OTA. Customers will become eligible for the
upgrade across a 4-day period based on their status with the Google servers. 67% of users are currently on SW DI18 so the first
OTA package we will publish will be an upgrade from DI18 – Froyo (DL11). We will be publishing hop upgrades from DG27 – Froyo
and DI07 – Froyo as soon as possible following the initial release
OTA Duration time is dependent on current device usage: 10 – 25 minutes, with installation time of 6-8 minutes
from the leaked .pdf from the first day, after the screenshots. thanks to whoever leaked it! DI18 is priority, you cant really sit on the older versions, I think those 'hop updates' are for old stock sitting around with the old versions waiting to be activated. Oh and the DL11 is a typo, they just cut and pasted from a previous release most likely...

maybe it will be automatically updated with a script when they start the ota's. idk, just a guess.
UPDATE PROCESS: The software update will be delivered as a wireless download (over-the-air, or OTA) in waves starting on February 21. All Samsung Epic 4G owners should have access to the download by the end of the week (Feb. 25).
Once your Epic is in the queue and eligible to download the update, a message will be pushed to your device saying that a software update is available. If you are not yet in the queue and you attempt to check for a software update manually, you will receive a message saying “no upgrade is available”. This simply means your device isn’t in the current wave of updates.
All customers should have access to the update by the end of the week (Feb. 25).
just got this off sprint site.... so phones dont check... pushed, and you cannot even manually trigger it... I even Odin'd to DI18 a bit ago, to see if I could trigger it activating DI18... no dice. OK... whos in wave 1... cough it up!

Just curious, can I ask why contact you first? Are you aware of something I haven't read?

Really do appreciate someone looking out for everyone. I am going to hold on his until I see some positive results, because I can't fix what Sprint breaks!!
