Xoom For Note Taking

I've been trying to find a decent app that I can use to write notes on. I want to use this in class so I can just take out a stylus and just start writing. I saw that the HTC Flyer had a built in app that you can write with their stylus and then record audio at the same time.
While that app is ideal I am not sure if there is an application like that on the Market.
Has anyone used the Xoom yet in class/meeting for note taking using a stylus and keyboard yet?
Its one of the major things I need for a tablet and one that is making me consider the iPad2. I love Android too much to do that to myself but I really need this functionality lol.

I know it hurts to leave android, but get the ipad. The note taking apps on it are amazing. Note taker HD for instance allows you to simultaneously record and take notes at the same time. Handwriting recognition works beautifully with a stylus, and its very easy to switch colors to make your notes more clear.

Notetaker HD is pretty awesome. If there isn't an Android app of quality by the time I start back to school next semester I might have to grab an iPad 2. I hate having redundant devices, but I might have to get both. At least with both I'll never say damnit I wish this app would come to X or Y platform.

Give it some time, with this being a google android experience provides you better believe they're going to do something like that

If you know of an ipad app developer that designed a great note taking app, I would just email the app developer and ask if they're making one for android or not. Most of the time you'll get a response. Some actually email me back and told me that they're working on it and it'll be released soon.

I have an ipad and it definitely has more software, I use mine daily (not so much now that I have the xoom). Note taking is a bit of a disappointing experience. The keyboard in portrait mode still isn't as fast as a normal keyboard. The stylus for a capacitive digitizer isn't really a good input device. It is a wide foam tip that sometimes skips on the screen, you have to write too big. It is was a hard tip pencil point type used on the resistive digitizers (not possible with current tablets), I think that would be better.
The palm rejection software didn't work for a hook-lefty for the ipad programs I looked at at the time so I didn't even try it.
On the xoom I loaded catch, I use it on my droid and ipad and it works fine. Evernote is good too but the service is too expensive at $45; if you don't buy the service you won't get your notes when not connected to the internet.

I've been using the xoom to take notes! I just use Documents to go Writer for taking notes in class with a mini bluetooth keyboard (not the official one, but a $30 one from amazon). I use a program called grades to track my homework and other assignments. I also use kindle and docs to go PDF for viewing e-books.
I also have no desire to write "naturally" on it with a stylus. If I wanted to do that I would have a five star notebook that doesn't cost $800.

I agree that I have no desire for "natural" writing with my xoom. My biggest concern is that whatever I write I want backed up somewhere, and if I choose to continue on a desktop later.
Two possible solutions:
1. Google docs - I even put a shortcut on my desktop directly to the page with it. Bad thing you need to have wifi or at least 3g.
1a. You can try a program called gdocs. That more of a notepad, but it syncs automatically to a google docs folder
2. I use dropbox to sync a word document with my computer. Download dropbox to your xoom, and open the document once. It'll download it to a \dropbox directory. I used Astro to create a shortcut to that document so it was easy to access in a meeting. I use Documents To Go to open it. When I do open and edit it, I File--> Save and you can see it automatically uploads it to dropbox.
Neither solution allows voice recording as well, but I never felt I needed that.

If u download spare part from market and disable app compatibilty then restart then download gdocs. From the market. That should be more then enuff of a office apps for u to use and spare parts lets all ur apps even non tab apps show full screen

I'd hold out for the NoteSlate (http://noteslate.com) for note taking and use the Xoom for everything else.

The reason why I need to write notes, is it makes no sense in an engineering/biology class.
Ever had to describe a detailed cell drawing when you can just, I don't know, draw it? lol
And yes I can buy a notebook and just do it there, but frankly, I have a ton of e-textbooks and I rather just carry a tablet instead.
I have a netbook. It does its job for regular note taking sessions, but I can't record properly, and there is no linking between what I wrote and what I recorded.
HTC Flyer does this but its too damn small and lackluster.

I wonder if once it's released, an enterprising coder will yank and port it ala Wifi Calling from the G2 to the Nexus.
(I'm extremely interested in a solution for similar reasons.)
If you need an immediate solution "today", the best I've seen is Graffiti as a scrawl to text translator and MaplePaint as a freestyle doodle. I'm biased because I had a number of Palm PDAs so I'm familiar with Graffiti and it's quirks. There was one other as a keyboard replacement that would do the same thing and had a lot of potential, as long as I didn't have to do it on my <4" phone screen (waiting for the wifi version later this spring). It was $10 for the full version and in my aggravated state of having to play with it on my phone I uninstalled it. It did have serious potential if I was on a 10" screen though, now I wished I'd written down the name.

Well it doesnt have audio recording, but for hand held drawing, I just saw drawfree, it does do free style drawing with the ability to change colors,
it just appeared in the tablet apps section of the market

I'm an engineering student also and I'm looking for a good note taking/recording app. I have the Xoom and will be getting an iPad 2 next week which will be much better in this particular area. However, I just don't see how I could be more productive on a tablet than my laptop. A bluetooth keyboard would be really nice and it'd take up less room, but there aren't too many benefits to it.
I tried out this drawing application and there's no way it'd be useful without some sort of stylus. Using your finger just feels very awkward.

Notetaker HD
I'm not much of a poster but I've been looking for a good note taking app since I sold my iPad. I emailed Dan about porting his Notetaker HD app to Android and this is what he replied with:
I'd love to have it there, but it will be at least a while before I can even look into it. It's hard enough doing it for the iPad (written in Objective-C and in some places raw C for speed) but perhaps once the functionality gets firmed up on the iPad I can do an Android conversion, but not yet.

I am disappointed but hopeful that someone will make a Onenote type app for Android yet.

do they know about this? Supposedly it allows apps to be easily ported to android

I've got an Ipda and a xoom and have the same goal as you did - write naturally on a tablet with a stylus. The Ipad has a numnber of apps to accomplish this whereas the xoom doesn't have anything that works yet. I use Notes Plus on the Ipad for now til xoom catches up. However, these Ipad developers did not have any sense of urgency for developing for android when I contacted them. They were concentrating on improving their Ipad offerings.
The closest thing I found for xoom was an app called Note Everything but the responsiveness for inkwriting was unusable for note taking.
I'm keepin' my Xoom though cause it rocks in every other way - just waitin for the apps to explode on the scene!

I've been using Evernote for this for quite some time now. Started on my Droid and it works flawlessly on the Xoom. I can take notes from a web browser and they automatically sync to my tab and phone. Handy to have all your notes with you all the time (like when the boss asks for something). I have one of those mini BT keyboards which paired fine with the Xoom and I've been in several meetings so far where I've use the audio recording. The files turn out to be small but it does a halfway decent job of recording. You can add pictures to each note, rich text. It's been pretty slick, and it's free.

I contacted a few iPad developers about coming to android, more specifically honeycomb and these were my responses:
SketchPad HD:
"Sorry. No current plans for Android tablet apps. There just aren't that many honeycomb tablets on the market. "
CourseNotes:
"We have no direct plans for an Android version at the moment, but we are keeping a close eye on the state of hardware/software on the Android side to see if it will be a good match for the app in the future."
Not the greatest news. Here's to hoping something comes out soon for android.

Probably just what was said about Android phones two years ago.
I'm using Catch for notes but looking at the HTC Scribe, and I really don't like HTC, I think they're on to something. Hope that's just a pen and software we can all use.
I was using Evernote, a nice program but I thought the price to have offline notes of $45/yr was excessive.

hi. i finished school with good grades so my dad told me he will buy me what i want (but not ANYTHING like 1000$ or something)
anyway, i told him i wanted a galaxy tab 10.1
i waited until it arrived then i was going to go and buy it then my bro told me "Do you really need it?"
so i head to the store and before buying it i remembered what he said and i headed home without buying it.
it have been days and i am over my head thinking and especially that i can buy anything else" i need" (but idk what i really need) and that my dad offered me to deposit in my bank account the same price of the tab in case i did not buy it.
here is why i want it: games, web browing , chatting.
do i really need it ?

If you don't have smartphone it will be a whole new world for you and you will love it. Now if you are a techie with a lot of gadgets its simply going to be an accessory, a very convenient one still. then comes all the in depth customizing. It could most likely eliminate the use of others if you can find its use. At the same price you can get a good laptop or even a better super phone. Its all up to your standards of living, if you can use such a product productivly and willing to put the time into getting to understand the product, standard ergonomics.

i had samsung 7, and now 10.1. For myself i would buy it again. But it wont answer your question.
Read following feature list. If you will use following features regularry, its for you.
- reader : comfortable way to read books ( write anot.) you can keep thpusands of books with variouse format
- light weight : important, if you travel often
-good access to internet, mail, exchange
- remote access over vpn to remote desktop etc
For me, it is useless to have netbook. I have also laptop, but heavy i7 proc, 16Gssd. Its hardly portable, but i run on it network simulation.
Personaly if i would be fresh graduate, i would wait. This market is really new.

I love my Tab but if you don't have a computer or a laptop I would get as lightweight of a laptop that you can afford. A 14 inch screen around one inch thick would be a great portable sized one, I have an HP that size and it is great.
But if you do have a computer/laptop already then the Tab would an awesome addition, but it is really a toy IMO.

I love my Tab. I never bought into the smartphone craze, mostly due to the price of data plans, the Tab allows me into the world of smartphones, just on wifi instead. Between Netflix,games, browsing on the net, reading Game of Thrones on the kindle app, RSS readers I have not used my computer nor my PlayStation all summer long. With all the customization I am very happy with my decision, save for no love from an actual Netflix app or HBO GO.

I say yes and here is way. Tablets are changing the consumption of media, and they do everything from web browsing, email, IM chat, video calls, movies, tv shows, games, media storage, news, books, and on and on. My gtab is playing second fiddle to my iPad right now but it is a really nice convenient way to be connected.

You say you don't really know what you need...so it sounds like there's really nothing you need. I suggest you do buy it! It's pretty sweet! You could use it for many things on a daily basis. You said you finished school, I don't know if you're going back or not, but you can also use it to take notes in class instead of wasting paper.
If you buy it you have 14 days to return it without a problem. If you buy it at a Best Buy they won't even charge you for a restocking fee so give it a try!

I was always an apple person and was super excited about the ipad until I discovered it was basically a big phone. So I waited for something more approaching a computer to come along and finally decided on the tab.
Pros
1. Super light weight: makes my netbook seem like a brick. This is majorly useful for heading out of the house and for holding while lounging around or whatever.
2. Fast for email and web browsing.
3. Emulators - plays snes and genesis games... what more do you want.
4. Touchscreen - with keyboards designed for honeycomb e.g. thumbkeyboard it is surprisingly easy to type. Browsing etc feels great.
5. Always on and ready to go (though mac laptops / chrome are simillar)
Cons
1.for writing it is still not quite able to give a good experience (though that should be obvious) it struggles with large documents and Google docs is badly implemented. For instance I was reading a manuscript on here marking places that needed editting using polaris office (included free). It worked nice as a reader but did not inform me that it failed to save the last 20 of my 60+ bookmarks.
2. More bugs and lag than on a fully fledged computer, but not too bad.
3. Not post-pc enough to justify purchase over desktop or laptop depending on what you already have - in terms of what you can do, the tablet is no replacement for either. But if you have them already you will find you use them far less.

My suggestion (as a GTab 10.1 Owner) is... don't buy a Galaxy Tab 10.1
Get a Nook Color... root it, overclock it... etc... you'll learn much more this way and you'll save several hundred dollars
... or get the original galaxy tab 7, which you can find for less than 200 dollars on craigslist.
and maybe get an ipod touch with your extra cash and have the best of both worlds. I dunno, up to you.
Either way, at this point 500 is too much to pay.
I'm disappointed there is no official netflix app, no official google voice support... lack of quality tablet apps, and I'm worried about Samsung supporting the device once the next version comes out.

Consumption v. Production
Nice contrast between pros and cons. About the question, really depends on what you plan on using it for. I think the tab is more often used for information consumption versus production. I use it for work as a sales rep to view email and work files quickly and easily. I tether it through my HTC Inspire and almost always have it connected. Again, more for information consumption versus production. However, I know there is a docking keyboard I may get down the road, and not carry my laptop anymore! And, its cool to pull up videos/pics/industry news on the spot to show clients without the hassle of booting up a laptop...

No. You NEED a computer if youre attending another type of schooling. I'd get a tablet later because having a computer has more uses especially for school, where a tab(especially a HoneyComb one) is for play and mobility(or as I call lazyness).
When I had my iPad, I used it for internet because I was lazy to get my laptop out. Went back and returned it (I'm 16, so I have to be allowed to return regardless, within the return period, this case being 3 months ), thought I wanted an iPad 2, bought a laptop, and don't regret it.
Laptops last much longer if you buy the ones $600-$900(they are mainly above average these days).
In short, GET A LAPTOP, THEN A TAP YOU REALLY WANT LATER, like a quad core one hahah.

I have all 3. This is order of how much I use each device.
Laptop > Netbook > Tab 10.1
Laptop is still the best for overall productivity.
I like my tablet, but there is no way it could be my only device.

For games, get an iPad.
Big MMORPGS, got a Laptop.
Web browsing, a 15-17 inch laptop.
If you want it to be portable, iPad/XOOM, Tab 10.1 is too thin and easy to snap, also doesn't take a memory card, XOOM does.
Chatting, all will work.
If you don't have a dual core phone, get a laptop, but get a good one, my Toshiba Satallite for $600, dual core at 2.3 ghz I believe, 4 Gb of ram, 640(really 500)gb hard drive, etc. I don't regret picking my laptop over the iPad 2. Yes, I've had iphone 3g since launch, the 3gs, then 4 until February, had android since(like 5 android phones, all getting better).
I have a strong feeling you will be happy with a computer over a tablet. If not, you got 15-30 days to return But you will want a tablet. go play with a tab at bestbuy, not a game, just see what it can do, the speeds it does. My dads employee lent him a 10.1, I played with it for about 10 minutes, then got bored. Go try it out, tabs are limited, not computers.
If none of that made sense, I explained why to get a laptop.
To answer your Original Post(no, I'm not lazy, I wont us OP), GET A LAPTOP FIRST, THEN A TABLET LATER.
But seriously, he might be right. Do you really want a tab? Go play with one first then tell me what you think.

This is the best advice in your case. Unless you already have a nice laptop, get yourself a MacBook Pro, because you'll need it for any school related and/or creative projects you will embark on in the future. Throw Parallels, then Windows, and any games you can think of on it, and you'll be set for a while. MBP may be approaching your dads budget, and I feel for him, but a 13" at Macmall/Microcenter with $50 8GB ram upgrade from NewEgg is the route I'd want my smart, savvy son to take.
If your laptop shreds already, tell dad to find you a $99 HP Touchpad, and spend the rest on an educational father/son trip to Vegas. ;D

WTF? That's a reason for NOT buying a Tab? Because it'll be more likely to break by putting massive force on either side?
I'd also like to see a survey of how many Xoom or Transformer or Iconia users actually, you know, swap SD cards on a regular basis.

I have a laptop (a gaming one at that)
A tab 10.1
and an HTC evo...
I use my laptop quite a bit 4-10 hrs a day
phone about 2-5hrs a day
tab 10.1 >2 hrs a day
so in the end was it worth the 499.99 no, am i glad i bought it yes.
im the kind of person who always has to get something when i see it that looks cool...
I do love how fast and easy it is to surf web and stream music. once i get the logitech Zagg bt keyboard case will i use it for school, yes. I would much rather carry that around than a 17" laptop...
The tab is very convenient when in bed and doing some last minute XDA reading (lol i love this site) or when playing a game on my laptop, to be able to look up something w/o having to ALT+TAB is wonderful... idk about some people but i think its pretty snappy when it comes to browsing the web (w/ dolphin browser)...
start with a laptop or a MBP (they are nice but im still a M$ person) if you go with a Windows machine check out HP's website they always have great GREAT deals on high performance laptops (HP makes very nice laptops and you would be wrong to think any less IMO)
(tons of free upgrades and i think they still have the deal going on where you buy a laptop and get a free 4Gb Xbox)
I love my Tab... only downfall for me is the homescreen/launcher (TW) is pretty laggy... esp when moving apps or creating shortcuts

Here's what I'll tell you,
Tablets are a great internet viewing device and fun to pay games on, but they are more of a filler between a phone and a laptop. If you do not have a laptop or your own computer I would suggest the computer.
At this point in time, if I were you, I would get an HP TouchPad for $99 (if you can find one) and play around with it. If you like it then good, if you don't you can sell it on ebay for most likely more than you paid or keep it because it is only $99. Then you have the rest of your money to get a laptop or Galaxy Tab if you find the need for them.

Can the Note replace a phone, tablet and laptop?

Has anyone tried to use the Note to replace a phone, tablet and laptop? If so how successful was it and was there anything you could not do such as printing?

It can't replace a laptop but it can do quite a bit including printing.

I'd be able to do many things with the Note if I had to if my laptop broke. But for everyday use - no way. Playing games, reading stuff, browsing, media etc. - yes. Writing an official letter several pages long comfortably- no.

Basically, no it can't replace a laptop but it'll replace a phone and tablet quite easily (in fact, tablets will seem excessively bulky after you get used to the Note). Perhaps in a few months/years when developers actually make good software for Android that rivals that of Apple's App Store, it could replace a laptop, but until then it won't.
It's quite capable hardware-wise of replacing all three but its missing the software component of it - the software available on the Market and preinstalled just isn't taking full advantage of the phone's capabilities. It's sad, really. Hopefully this will change with ICS and the release of the Pen SDK.

Depends on what you use your laptop for. If its just browsing the web and some multimedia stuff then maybe. If its things like word processing then probably no.

It will never replace a Laptop/Notebook. At least NOT in the next 5-10 years to say a minimum. Before everyone starts shooting at me... Why? I will try to explain my opinion in a simple manner:
A Desktop/Tower PC: You have a keyboard and a screen but its not portable.
Laptop/Notebook(13"-18.4"): You have a screen and a keyboard and it's portable.
Netbooks(10"-13"): You again got have a screen and a keyboard and it's portable but the small screen is not very comfortable to use. Subjective so NO bushing please. For me it's not, but I agree those tiny things are very portable.
Tablet(7"-10.1"): Good performance, NO hardware keyboard on most, virtual typing on flat surface or even in a angle NOT very comfortable for long typings and (usually)half the screen is GONE also and it's NOT even near to a Laptop/Notebook/Netbook's usage comfortability.
For everyone else that does not require often writing or specific tasks, it's near perfect.
Tablet(7"-10.1") with keyboard dock: Android might be good, but is NOWHERE near or close to Windows or OCX or Linux as every day usage for almost everything.
And also to be honest here. A Tablet with a keyboard dock? Then the main difference with the Netbooks, is the Operating system. Think about it.
And last but NOT least, Phoneblets: Same performance as Tablets, PERFECT MIX to a phone and a tablet, it CAN indeed replace them, but it will NOT directly replace the Tablets(might replace it for some that are satisfied with 5.3", like me) or neither any above categories for the above aforementioned reasons.
The main reason is the smaller screen. A 7-10.1" might not be very pocketable, but it's much more easy to work on those screen sizes.
Everything exists in it's own category. Before you ask why, because other people need/want what we DO NOT need or want. E.g: I don't need Tablets, I own a Notebook/Laptop which is a 18.4".
Why that screen size? Because I need/want a 17-18" Laptop/Notebook. Like people need/want a Tablet or a Netbook or a Phoneblet or a economic car, while others don't care and get a 5.0L V8 instead of a 2-3L Hybrid.
In the end? They will give us/make what the Market Demands. That's all there is to it. Market demand and profit. Where's a Market to get into, there's profit. If not, they move on.
P.S: While I love my GNote and I never owned personally a Tablet (had a GTab for 2 weeks), if I had own one, it would have replaced it. Hell, I barely use my Laptop now(fiance does tho ) and mostly I'm on my Desktop and my GNote.
And productivity is going very well also. GNote for social "work" and some quick emails(also some games, funny apps, killing time, oh and calling) and if I need something more "advance" or specific, I just use my PC.
But when I visit friends, I usually take the Laptop/Notebook with me. Even if I love my GNote it cannot replace it as of now. But the future is looking very promising tbh.

The obvious answer is, of course, what do you do?
The biggest difference between a laptop and a smartphone is the operating system. Only being able to have one app open at once is a dealbreaker as far as productivity goes. And that's just one difference.
People bring up mouse/keyboard but you can use a bluetooth keyboard/mouse with the Note. So that's irrelevant.
Highly dense text/apps would be much easier on the eyes with a tablet. I've already hit a few games that had just unbearably small text. The new amazon store has quite small text, but still readable.
As a phone - no question it works, unless you tend to use pockets that would be too small to hold the note. ( The note is far more pocketable than people think though ).

I have found very little use for my laptop since I bought the Note.
My main machine is a desktop with 2x 24" monitors, so that's where my design work happens. Anything else is a satellite to my desktop, and the Note replaces both my old Android (Desire HD/Ace) and my laptop for pretty much everything, with the added advantage of having stylus input. Being able to write to USB stick over OTG cable is a big win too.
I used to have a tablet, but a 7" device isn't pocketable so I left it at home all the time. The Note is small enough to pocket but big enough to show clients images, layouts, videos, Flash, and to annotate effectively, especially with the laptop-level resolution.

I haven't received my Note yet. I get it next Wednesday.
But as a Dell Streak, HP TouchPad, and Macbook Pro owner my usage ranking is; Macbook Pro, Dell Streak, then TouchPad.
I like the larger tablet with some activities, but as an all around tablet I take the smaller 5" Streak every time. The Note will do everything my Streak does but better.
Soon, I'll just be a Macbook Pro and Note owner. I think that's my ideal form factors... and there is a specific void they both fill well.

There are many "levels" of laptops. From netbooks to workstations. You have to be more specific. I mean do you think the Gnote can replace my W520 that I use to run adobe software while driving three external monitors?

For those that use the Laptops just for surfing the net, occasional e-mailing, some text writing and in general very, very basic stuff, then yes, it possible to replace them.
But then again laptops for the mentioned usage(performance wise) are much cheaper than the Note.

for me it easily replace phone (htc hd2 runnig android) and tablet (galaxy tab 7" still prefer tab over note over ebook while i have both under my hand) but laptop i dont think so as koniakki said if you only surf, email, office it may replace laptop for you at some situations but generally it cant replace laptop.

let's have some more inputs on this from note/note 2 users.....

No it can't replace laptop completely. I use btooth keyboard and mouse and it almost replaces laptop until when I need to do serious photo editing or work on a complex excel sheet or compile few c# codes. These exceptions are once in a blue moon stuff and hence I wouldn't feel comfortable to give up laptop for Note or Android tablets. Windows 8 tablet may finally replace laptop.

Although the Note is an epic device, and can do almost anything, For situations like that ^^ it cannot replace a laptop / pc
I use mine for everything, I do all my emailing / surfing / movie /music watching + streaming on the Note ( Mainly because im too lazy to move to the other side of the room to access the PC lol)
I would imaging for your average user then yes, It can / could replace a laptop, But at some point there will be a moment where you think 'Damn it ! wouldn't this just be easier on my computer?'
I must also add, Im super lazy, I have remote desktop app on my Note so I can access my computer and print files without leaving the sofa, I also have the Viera connect app so I can control my TV when I cannot be bothered to reach over for the remote control lol..... All I need now is for someone to pump my chest every few seconds so I dont have to waste energy breathing :laugh:

well before my htc desire broke down i was planing to buy tablet... and when it broke down i had no choice but to use my money to buy new phone... i had to chose between sony xperia s (i think, cant be sure now) and note... i chose note cos i hoped that it will satisfy my need for tablet...
it didnt.
i end up buying tablet few months later
so NO! it cant replace not even tablet, and definitely not pc/laptop

I agree. Note hardly replaces my notebook for the productivity. However, it can be used as a substitute while you travel light. Reading and sending emails, paying bills, communicating, reading news and books, watching movies, listening music, playng games all are possible. Great gadget for me. The best.

I bought mine so it would replace my labtop. And it has.
I guess it depends on your usage but the galaxy fits all my needs so it can replace my labtop completely

Yes. I find I hardly use my laptop or desktop anymore. Unless I need the real estate, like editing pictures or something, or I need to type out a really long document (I find a keyboard faster, though programs like Thumb Keyboard or Swiftkey are really good) I will usually use my Tab 10.1. It also boots up much faster than my laptop or desktop.
Having said that, there have been a few websites that just didn't work with the Tab (mostly for filling in forms) and I needed the laptop/desktop.

It won't completely replace it yet, especially for work, if you're looking at multiple documents for example.. its a big pain to keep switching between them on the tablet. It has greatly reduced the amount of time I use the laptop though.. so much so that I'm planning on buying a cheap desktop to use as a server and my tablet to access stuff on it with teamviewer

The tab doesn't replace my desktop. Editing video and photos requires the computer still. I also pay all my bills with my computer, faster and easier to do. But I sold my laptop as I no longer used it, the tab did replace that.

The only reason I keep a laptop around since I bought my first Galaxy Tab (7") over a year ago is for my motorcycles.
I still need a Windows device with USB to do my own software tuning on the bikes.
For everything else the laptop did, the tablet(s) do now instead, and do it better for the most part, even when I have to travel for work.

my laptop now really just serves as a media server

I use my desktop in the office. I spend lots of time on my GT mostly for reading/browsing/mail/on-the-run. I *really* wish that Santa will carry a GT VGA dongle so i can ditch my iPad.

Since I got my Tab my laptop has perrty much become a media download and storage device. And my desktop I use mostly for gaming and... well... perrty much just gaming.
I'm a chef and use my Tab for work, things like writing menus and recipes to using excel documents to help me track of costs, spending and labor tracking as well as posting and tweeting about specials and going on's in the restaurant.
All of theses things I use to have to leave my kitchen and go to my office to accomplish. Now I just grab my Tab do what's needed and go on with my day.
It really depends on what your looking for your Tab to do...

I still do need my laptop as media server. Since my tablet only has 16GB, it is not a practical thing for me to download medias with the tablet as it it eat up the storage fast.
I was thinking of selling my laptop because I have a desktop at home. Ah well, I'll come to a consensus someday

I haven't used a laptop for a year or so now. So I'm trying to see if I can remotely connect to my desktop wherever I am and be able to do certain tasks with minimal to no lag.

I have a gaming laptop so it's pretty large, rather heavy and has fairly short battery life. While it is possible to take it around the house, it hasn't moved since I got the Tab.
If I want to write a long doc or play Crysis I use my laptop, but for day to day surfing, casual games and the bulk of what you use a laptop for, the Tab handles it all perfectly well for me.

Still surf porn on the laptop... Kidding... You can do that fine on the Tab as well. (Still kidding, jeez).
Yes, I use the laptop less now. The Tab isn't as fast browsing - pages load much slower - so cheating at Jeopardy is harder. I have to rely on my own brain... sucks.

My tab has basically made my laptop useless. I have my desktop at work which I use all the time, but having the Galaxy Tab has basically replaced all of my non-work PC usage. I used to lug a laptop (and then a netbook, when I got one) on my 2 hours of commuting time each day, but the tab has replaced that and then some.
I've never been a huge home PC user, but the tab has basically reduced my home PC time to 0.

The Tab is really useful and usable one-handed. Or so I've been told.

I have to use the laptop for Photoshop, and whenever I get the urge to play Civ 5. For 95% of my needs, the Galaxy Tab is faster/easier to grab.

I use both. Since I get a lot of e-mails, I check my mail on my PC in the morning to clear out the e-mails with attachments. The tab does not handle large attachments very well. For the balance of the day I use my tab. I also have the Zagg folio keyboard so it makes things a lot easier. Also use the tab for reading using either Kindle or Nook.

I bought the Tab and sold my Netbook, mind you, I've since bought a Sensation and rarely use my Tab now.

Note 10.1 for school

I just recently picked up a Note 10.1 to replace my HP touchpad for use at school. I was having a tough time deciding on the tablet so I thought I would post my experience using the Note 10.1 for productivity the last week. Any comparison I have is to the HP Touchpad running android ICS. Here is some key points.
The Good:
1. The Note 10.1 is not very heavy, I use it as a notebook and its about the same size and weight as a notebook.
2. The device has darn good battery life, I'm not going to throw numbers around because it varies, but its good.
3. The Note 10.1 is of good quality. THe one I have does not creak, has good sound and what I consider a quality screen. Side by side compared to my HP Touchpad of similar pixels, there is no comparison, the Note 10.1 is FAR superior in picture quality and color saturation.
4. The S-Pen is very useful. Best thing about Note devices in general, you can use them in class and people don't assume your on facebook or texting, simply because you have a pen in your hand. I don't have a facebook anyhow but the perception is different.
5. The software is solid, it does not lag, it does not shut off, it just works, at least so far.
6. The device is pretty close to a desktop replacement for me, the multitasking really opens up the options and works pretty well.
The Bad:
1. When using the device at school (I have very long days in one classroom), it can't be sat upright AND be on the charger. I have the samsung book-cover case and when it is upright, since the charging port is on the bottom, it won't plug in.
2. Proprietary cable, I know there are some good things, but my touchpad had micro USB and I think it was nice to have a standard.
That's all. It's overall a great device. I am very happy with it.

If you get a 360 case you can rotate the tablet while in the case so that the charging port would then be on the top and you can charge that way. I kind of like the 30 pin connector as it is more hefty, I have seen so many people complain about damaged micro usb charging ports on other device forum pages. Playbook and kindle fire especially. Just my 2 cents........

You can get an adaptor that gives you normal usb ... I have a hub that connects to the 30 pin connector, gives me 3 usb ports and a couple of sd card ports. 1 normal sd and 1 microsd... I got this for around $20 on ebay and have no regrets as it works flawlessly with everything I've thrown at it, excepting of course an unpowered HDD....

You can connect a BT keyboard, you can generally share music, video and photo's to an HDTV if it has WiFi (DLNA), You can use the HDMI adapter or a Samsung All Share Cast Hub that sends a wireless mirrored image to anything with an HDMI connection. There are many options.

I wanted to touch on the school usablity. I'm the only one that I've seen in my school with a Note. I have the origonal note on ATT for a while, but I didnt feel the software matched the hardware at all. I sold my transformer infinity prime (which was awesome hardware but really really bad software) for the Note 10.1.
I've used it for a few weeks now in lectures and for homework. Many of my instructors upload either PDF of power points of their lectures. The Note excels at handling this. I simply import PDF directly to SNote or if its a powerpoint, I can open it in the included office program then export it as a PDF then import it to SNote. Either way, I have folders for all my classes along with lecture notes organized in a slim format. I used to go through almost a ream of paper every term printing out slides (6 per page) and then organizing into a huge binder and watching the pages wear out. And not something I want to haul around and study. The Note replaces all this. When I work out math problems, I have an instant "dry erase" board with me. I don't go through notebooks. Also, I have the equation solver in Snote which is awesome by the way.
I wish I could get flash working well. I have it sideloaded and have firefox on it, but the online homework sites that use flash do not recognize onscreen keyboard inputs. Other than the laggy lock screen (seems to be all the animations) it runs great and snappy.

I've also switched from paper notes to digital. It's awesome, there's just one problem. Several times I've caught myself looking for the undo button in class on the real-life whiteboard

Does anyone use there note for textbooks? If so, how is it with the resolution? Especially if you use it in multi window while taking notes.

It's not bad. Use hyreader for chm, ezpdf/acrobat/radeepdf for pdf reading. It does take away space from the already small screen for notes so I tend to use my laptop or an actual textbook instead if I intend on taking notes. Sometimes i'll just give up and write directly on the pdf instead. for PPTs, I convert to PDF and write directly on them w/ acrobat or ezPDF.

If im decidimg between this and a nexus 10, would it be better to go with the nexus for the higher resolution for better clarity of textbooks and take any notes on a netbook I already have? If the lecture is using a PPT thats provided, I could always take the notes on the "note" section of the power point slide. Typing is also faster than writing. After seeing the nexus 10, im having a hard time going for the note due to the clarity of screen. What do you think?

I've had no issues w/ reading textbooks on the Note 10.1. The question you need to ask yourself is if you want the s-pen. It's really the deciding factor. If you want to be writing and taking handwritten notes with it then there's no question about it, go with the Note. If you just want a tablet to read things and surf the web then go for pretty much ANY tablet out there, or go with the Note anyways. Doesnt really matter.
As for PPT notes, sure you could type faster if that's the type of classes you have. I'm in med school and writing/drawing out diagrams is super super useful. For example, I'll have a slide with an image of a lung, the pen lets me circle the abscess and label it. Really depends on the purpose.
Think about your purpose. Think about what fits your usage and what you want to use it for. S-pen is unparalleled and the screen resolution isnt breath taking but it's NOT bad at all.

This is my main concern as well. I'm wanting to use a Note 10.1 for my pdf textbooks and be able to take notes with it as well. Am I going to need another tablet just for the books or will I be able to dual view or switch windows quick enough where I only need the one device?

The feature you are looking is what makes this tablet unique.
I almost never use my hard copies of books. Just use the digital version.
I the multi Window features plus spen is very useful to take notes while reading. No other tablet offers these two. I thought the newer Windows tablet might work better but I am wrong. Their pen input needs a lot more improvement.

That's just what I wanted to hear. The Windows Surface Pro was my other choice, but I figured I could get a Note 10.1 and a cheap laptop at the same cost. I just ordered a 32gb Note 10.1 and it should be here in a few days. :fingers-crossed: Thanks for the reply.

I was in the same boat so I got both lol.

I would definitely recommend the Note 10.1 for textbook reading and note-taking, especially if u can find your textbooks on the Kno website. Their textbooks are interactive in more than a few ways!! The S-Pen seals the deal here too, at least for me.
I'll post some screens of my Music Textbook. Or maybe I should do a vid.

And to top it off you can add the 64gb sd card and increase your memory... I know that a lot of tabs dothis but a few don't, I'm looking at the nexus family here.... This is a real downer as sometimes 32gb just isn't enough.
The screen is fine, I read books in epub format all the time and also read a fair few PDF's with no problems... And I'm not a student...:laugh:

I have a note 10.1 and I've been using it primarily for my revision for my exams and its been awesome !!
