I am using CMN 6.2.0 v2.0 with radio 2.15.## (can't remember the other numbers). In standby, I get somewhere around 2-5 mA (according to current widget). My battery drain in an hour is around 8% in standby. From what I can tell, this is not ordinary. My display is set to the lowest brightness settings. What I am syncing is my facebook (every hour), gmail, google reader, contacts, calendar, launcherpro facebook (every hour). If I am actively using my phone, it'll lose like 25% in an hour. I have MAGDLR 1.12. This is about the same battery drain as when I used HD2One for the SD card. What am I doing wrong?
Update: I do use Titanium back up to restore apps, does that have an effect on battery?
no answer, just some tips.
First, do not forget that battery drain is subjective (it's directly link to your usage of the phone).
I don't know your ROM, NAND or SD?
try to switch of things one by one:
Start in flight mode (check drain),
switch of data (keep only phone),
activate data but stop the auto synch of all your stuff,
put them on, one by one.
(do you keep wifi on?)
It will also depend of the strengh of your network. The weaker it is the more power your phone will use. If you're between two cells it can keep switching from one to the other.
I'm using Gauner NAND and it impressed be. In flight mode I loose around 3% over night.
Let also some time to your phone to "stabilize" after flash. Don't know why but after fews days my power drain has improved a lot (battery calibration maybe?).
hope this will help you.

My ROM, NAND is in my signature. I have put it on airplane mode from 2am-7am which it only lost 2 % (so im guessing it's something to do with data/sync). At home I use wifi, at school I use data. I will try turning off 3g and i'll try turning off sync. But the only thing I ever sync is gmail, contacts, calendar etc. I will attach my app list. I already read that URL and have done it many times, still lose 8% an hour.
HTML:
http://www.appbrain.com/user/jasonvvong/1-22-10
For all these people that claim to get 2 days out of their hd2, do you turn off 3g or sync or put it on airplane mode? If so, doesn't that really defeat the purpose of the phone? If you have to turn off imperative functions of the phone to have it last longer that 12 hours (that's how long I get with my phone), it seems pretty counterintuitive to have a smart phone because when I need to check my email, the internet, etc, I can just walk to a library or a computer lab and look at it there. It defeats the convenient nature of a smart phone.
At least in flight mod it seems ok
I have data always on, but when I install my ROM I setup to NOT auto synchronise. I prefer to know what my phone is doing. I'm not very good (yet) with Android but a lot of things seems to work in background.
I check my mails, use phone and it last more than one day without any problem.
Try to disconnect the auto-synch and activate the sync only for what you need (for me just mails and stock), use the smaller frequency you need. No need to update your mail every 5 mn if you check no very often for example.
Sorry but no other advice. just try to isolate what drain your battery.
When I read this "But the only thing I ever sync is gmail, contacts, calendar etc." check the frequency. If it's very often and with a lotof data, it could be a heavy usage.
Go to settings, about, battery use. That may help identify if there's anything chewing your battery up. I suspect that it will show the display as using the most power, which is normal and not really much help. Worth a look though.

Hi
Yesterday arrived my dev phone 1 and I am very hapy with it bu battery level is at 20% at 18:00. Is this normal?. I dont want to switch the band to 2g. I keep gmail synched with direct push but google talk not. anyone with same prpoblem?
Thanks
yeah, the standard battery in the G1 is ****ing terrible
not a lot you can do except buying an extended battery (which is a very good idea! )
The only thing I have found to extend my battery Life has been discussed previously a few times on these boards...
1. Turn off Wifi, when not in use. (Toggle WiFi from the Market is Great)
2. Turn off GPS, when not in use. (Toggle GPS from the Market also great)
3. Turn down the screen brightness.
4. (not sure if this makes a big difference) But sometimes if I do not need my feeds or background running apps throughout the day I will restart my phone, or run through a few applications that are not pulling web cache. This way you dont have auto update feedreaders in the background running. It seems like it works for me, but that could very well be wishful thinking. Also turning of things like Twitroid update etc...
Hope that helps.

i do #4 as well, it seems to help, since i have root i just go into terminal and type su [enter] reboot [enter] and when it turns back on its usually doing bettery with the battery
as for opening programs, would advanced task manager serve the same purpose (closing apps that arnt needed and using memory, because if its using memory isnt it in some way using battery power?)
Thanks.
I am porting CommMgrPro to Android (Similar to Locale but much more powerfull). In this way I will switch to 2G, turn Wifi off, disable connections, etc, etc, etc automatically depending on my location/weekday/hour.

Hi All
I have a brand new G1 and, like you, I was suprised by the short battery life.
I also thought about selling the phone but apart from that problem I like it very much.
I noticed that the permanent 3g wireless connection was the real draining battery application.
So the solution I found now is: to disable the permanent connection. I downloaded APNdroid application from the market and I use it everytime I need to toggle connection on and off.
I also tried to leave the WIFI on and i saw that it does not consume much battery.
I did not tried with the GPS.
I am using a good tool to toggle and to fine check the battery level: Useful switchers
I can now say I am pretty satisfied with the phone.

Yes. It was the same problem there was in HTC Hermes/TyNT and TouchPro/Diamond. I created bandswitch in the past and will create two little toggles to switch 3g/2g with and without time limit....
Conditioning
Try Conditioning the Battery...
I have gps on, 2g, brightness at 50% and screen timeout at 30 secs, everything syncing and I get around 5 or 6 hours of use...just like the company says I should.
Run your battery completely dead...
Charge your phone for around 8-12 hours...
Repeat for about 6 days...
You should see improved battery life.
I have 3g, wifi, bluetooth, brightness at 50% and screen timeout at 30 secs, everything syncing with 1-2 hours of music/video with 30 SMS, about 20 mins of calls......I am now getting about 8hrs on the new ones from HTC (the 04).
Interesting Battery
Well now that I have had a week of use I have noticed that the (old) "02" batteries would last about 4-5hrs and go until 1% before turning off, with a slow count down. The (new) "04" batteries stay at a high number (about 6-7hrs) until they get to 15% and within a few mins turn-off....as I recall I saw postings of 'quick' count downs, so I wonder if you either get a slow drain down with about 4hrs of use OR about 6 hrs of use with the last 15% a very quick shutdown....I'll keep monitoring these new HTC batteries to see if it was just one of those "weekend" things or if this is the trade off...was caught off guard as I had been getting 30 mins or so when I had 15% left and the G1 would stay on until 1%..."teach an old dog new tricks".....
Hi all
At the moment I seem to be getting about 10hrs out of my battery that came with me brand new HD2!
I was told to upgrade my radio which i did to 2.08 and firmware which i did to ENERGY ROM 23544 but the battery life is the same, maybe i have a faulty battery!!!!
I just did a Battery Log and need your help in trying to find the problem and hopefully getting me to the point of my phone lasting 24hrs would be good!!!
the phone was put into standby mode and left yet it goes upto 200+mAh when the screen is off
ok i have email checked every 15min
no weather
no location
no facebook or twitter
just emails
wifi off
WMlongbatterylife installed so 2G all the time except when running certain apps which are not in use when in standby, I have emails to use on 2G
just cant understand why it can go to 12mAh in standby but not stay there,(in standby mode is 12mAh high)
ok a little increase but not 250+mAh, i could understand it being every 15mins for the email but its every couple of minutes!!
in taskmanager all that was in it for this test was active sync and arkswitch, plus batter Log v0.2.1.1
Please please help
Battery Log
Battery Test Graph
just in case the test was too small, i did a test on the 15th March which i will also upload just in case it can help, many thanks
15thMarch Bat Test
Way too short indeed. Make one over one whole day, or at least over 50% of the battery, and if possible tell when the phone is in standby and when in use, hard to guess what you're doing from the log.
I did Nothing, the 1st log was the phone in standby, the screen was off so why would it go up and down in the 2nd graph when its in stand by, its crazy that every couple of seconds it goes upto 200+ mAh
the short log and graph are the same time when the phone was in standby!!!
I meant on the longer log, the short one is too short to see much.
You certainly have some program that wakes up the device repeatedly to do whatever...
I have had my phone since december. My experience was also unforgivingly short battery time to start with, just as you have. My experience is however that the battery time has increased more or less continously up to now. Now it may last one full day, through the night and maybe all of next day (with moderate use and no automatic checks). Letting the battery down to 1-3% before charge did speed this process.
Where can I find such Battery Log / graph app ?
i did a bat log test last night when i was sleeping and if you could have a look at it when i post it that would be great i was sleeping so i do not understand why it shows a 150+mAh strange!!
all that is running is emails every 15mins i did a bat log test last night when i was sleeping and if you could have a look at it when i post it that would be great i was sleeping so i do not understand why it shows a 150+mAh strange!!
so to make clear, last night i was sleeping, phone in standby mode but i have emails every 15mins
no weather
no twitter
no FB
no location
wmlonglife installed
as far as i know its just emails are running every 15mins
when i go in task manager all that is there is active sync and bat log
but if i go in processes i see more
Bat Log App
Bat Log running all night when i was sleeping
These are the processes that were running
Wow, your nights are short
Anyway, there's something that prevents your HD2 from going to standby, as there's no "hole" in the log. I was suspecting it was the logging software itself (if it logs, the device must be running, right?)
But I tested it and it doesn't seem to cause trouble, see attached log. When the device is properly off, the log stops.
I also tried without logging but by watching the graph, knowing each square is 15secs by default (3x5), during a 10min standby the graph only advanced 15sec, so the time out of standby is minimal.

haha yes sad to say last night was short, head hit the pillow at 2am and was up at 6am
but thanks for replying
so like i said i have my emails downloaded every 15mins, could this stop my device going into standby??
i used to have it set up through gmail but with the bad battery time i thought i would try outlook, tried push which got them instantly but that was a shorter battery so now i am trying through outlook but every 15mins like i had before, but still just as bad!!
on all the logs i have done when i press my power key so my screen goes off and i do not touch my phone my mAh just never stays low, sometime over 200+mAh with the screen turned off so my battery just dies in 10hrs!!
as far as i know from the apps in task manager and the processes all i have running is my mail and the needed system processes so i am struggling, i would kill for it to last 24hrs and i never thought i would say that because that is still short i think!!
another 1350 extended battery on its way but i think no matter what battery i have if the phone is using upto 200+mAh in standby then it will just drain it too
please help as i am stuck now
I'd try getting rid of the programs that run (shakeandsave and possibly wmlonglife, one at a time).
If it still fails... well, reflash another ROM with the recommended radio, with prior mtty erase, then a good hard reset after flashing (read the flashing tutorials for those), and try again without installing any program.
Push should use less power as it only turns on and transfers data if needed, not every 15mins for nothing.
I run with data, wifi and push active 24/7, and a 8hr night only eats me 5-10% of battery.

Thanks for that great set of advice
not wanting to sound like a school yard kid being a copy cat but 5-10% sounds great to me, dont suppose i could know what ROM and Radio your running so i could try your setup....please!!!!!
thanks for all your help
Check my signature, the ROM already contains the appropriate radio and it works fine at least where I am.
Since your advice on removing WMlonglife i have a question
that app used to disconnect my internet connection when i finish with the internet or when it checked me email
but now because i do not have the app when i click the top bar on my home page it shows my internet connection and battery and always at the side of the top bar is the clock ticking away saying i have been connected for 13hours and increasing, now yes i have a unlimited internet kind of, its meant to be unlimited but they said its a 3GB limit and when i go over 3GB they will just decrease my internet speed, so i have no problem with it being connected all the time but wont that use my battery????
Nope, being connected all the time has no drawback that I could notice. And as you said they'll bother you if you transfer more than 3GB, time doesn't count.

Excellent, then i will let the time tick away since its not downloading anything unelss its fetching an actual email
in that case it looks like the problem for me was WMlonglife which is crazy since its an app to make battery life longer it did the opposite for me
i unplugged my phone from a full night charge at about 9am and now its nearly 4pm and i am on 88% with push email on and about an hours music and changing setting ang general going through the phone and replying to about 12 emails so far which i have recieved since taking my phone off charge!!
also 3G but no BT or wifi running!
if this keeps up i will easily get through a full day and now i have 2 batteries i think all is good
so thank you, thanks for the fast replies and all your help!!
Christopher
Great, your battery life is even better than mine now
Hello,
When I got my SGS it only ate 2-3% of the battery during the night. Since then I've tried many different firmwares, currently on the latest JM6, and all of them have had a very annoying problem. It eats 8-10% of the battery during night. I haven't changed anything, wifi is "always on" to avoid it eating battery using 3G. Ofcourse I've tried turning it off, too. The funny thing is that using Spare Parts it seems like it's the "suspend" process using a lot of CPU, which I believe it definately shouldn't. Some times after flashing it seems okay and can sleep properly, but then it goes haywire again - without having installed anything since it worked. Anyone else having "suspend" process using a lot of CPU?
To test, install Spare Parts. Plug in the charger, and remove it again to reset stats (Spare Parts uses some system app to show the CPU usage, and its default view is "since last unplugged", very practical). Go to bed. Sleep. Wake up. Start Spare Parts. Select "Battery History". Click "Other usage", select "CPU usage". Wait for half a minute or so (it needs to load data, if you click anything now you won't get CPU time used). Find the "suspend" process. Check how much CPU it has used.
I might add, that this doesn't seem to have anything to do with wake locks, it's something strange in the system itself.
try next time with all unecessary items off
like WiFi, GPS, BT anything that you don't use when you go to sleep

Thanks, but I've noticed something strange - still checking, but it seems as if I haven't got my SD card inserted, it looks okay...
I use JM5, Wifi Always on, 3G Always on, Auto sync off when unnecessary.
I was working at the polling booths on Election day here in AU, that's from 7:30AM till 11:30PM, I didn't really need to use my phone for anything, but when I got out 16 hours later I noticed that I had only lost about 3-4% battery.
It's pretty good. D:
For the record:
Bluetooth - This only needs to be turned off if there are devices that auto-pair with the phone, such as a bluetooth headset, in which case you probably want it on anyway?
GPS - This does not need to be turned off as it only uses battery when a service is actively requesting a gps fix. For example if you have Maps open it will drain more battery, but it won't on standby unless you are using Location tracking software or otherwise location aware software.
WiFi - Truth to be told, WiFi when connected uses less power than a 3G connection on standby. WiFi does have the potential to use a lot more power than 3G because of the higher speed potential over a local wireless network. In most cases it's pretty safe to have WiFi always on, however it should be noted that when WiFi is NOT connected it will constantly scan for access points to connect to, this process uses power ON TOP of 3G, so it would be wasteful to leave this on unnecessarily unless you were using it for Google Location services via WiFi access points.
3G Data - The only reason this 'uses power' is because it's a always-on connection, you can partially remedy this by giving WiFi always-on priority saving both mobile data quota and some power. 2G uses a lot less power than 3G simply because it uses the GSM chip in the phone, not it's own higher power chip. So switch to 2G if u don't need high speed data, but want always on Push notifications and such. (EDGE is fairly fast, but I only get GPRS and 3G on my carrier. )
Brightness - This phone has a super bright screen, use something in the lower settings, auto brightness at day if you want.

I've got bluetooth off all the time, it's currently running a very new install of JM6, and I haven't installed anything that runs when I don't want it to run. 3G isn't used, as wifi is always on (advanced wifi settings).
It's around 7 hours since I pulled the plug, after having restarted phone after removing SD card, and the suspend process isn't even on the list anymore... I find this quite interesting - it might just be a coincidence, but right now it looks like there is some kind of problem with suspend process when SD card is in... Do you have an "external" SD card in your phone?
ive just flashed JM1 and hate how much power its using... no idea what the problem is, but ive just come off the official JM1 from Kies, and had a big problem so had to flash the first thing i could find. can this really be down to firmware?
i mean im really noticing a difference on standby, before id loose like 3-4% in a whole day of not using it, now it drops 10% in like a few hours...

i do use 16GB class 6 external SD from Transcent
MoWa22,
I had this happen to me last night and (am stock DXJG04) so very interesting. Trying to remember what my battery drain was last night but I think it was around 10-15% and previously I would get 1% if I turned everything off except being able to receive calls.
I always thought these issues were related to wake locks or that the phone just cannot sleep. Something to try is to reboot the phone and check the battery power before going to sleep and see the battery drain over the night. If minimal battery drain, then maybe it is a rogue app which you may have opened/used during the day. If same 8-10% drain, then am guessing some service or inbuilt process is causing issues.
Half the battle is trying to track the CPU hog or rogue app.
Dang. Lost almost 10% again tonight - but actually the "suspend" process almost didn't use any CPU, SD card still not in phone. Using the built-in battery usage thing, it has cell standby on top, phone idle right below. This is really starting to bother me...
Last night while I turned off APN, Wifi, GPS, etc, I left my phone on as 3G only. I've heard the switch between 3G to 2G causes extra battery drain so I had left the phone on as 3G only. I know 2G is lot less of a battery strain but wonder if it affects cell phone standby. Going to leave my phone on 2G tonight.
I have 3G and sync on. I have weather and feed widgets updated every hour. Plus some other widgets and Google Latitude which I know is using cpu time. My drain is about 1 to 1.2% drain per hour of standby. Firmware DJG4.
I think you dont need to bother too much if battery drains 1-2% per hour on standby (this gives you at least 2-4 days if you use the phone very little). Any more than this means you may have some rouge apps/widgets.
The more critical is the usage time (i.e. with screen on). This is usually like 15-20% drop per hour of use.
Been testing a bit again - this night I had a total of approx. 1% battery used in 9 hours. Still without SD card. I inserted the SD card one hour ago, and I've lost 5-6% already - and suspend process is on top of the list again... Definately something weird going on when SD card is inserted! Please, can anyone test with/without SD card and check for differences?
I spotted this thread and read with interest as last night I noticed my power dropped "unreasonably". I've not started any troubleshooting yet but I am curious about the SD card thing.
Have you tried having the SD card in, but unmounted? Does it still suck powere when unmounted?
Obviously unmounting it is a simpler and quicker process than removing the cover and then physically removing the card.
Mark.
Upgraded to the new Froyo today, seems to be without suspend problems even with SD card. Gotta check how much battery it'll eat during the night.

How did you manage that? Everything off? auto-sync off? Wifi? 3g? 2g?
I'm on jm5 with Samset 1.9f and for all the time ive had this phone it has only used 2% battery overnight. Exceptional cases were when i used Fancy Widget, it ate up all my battery overnight leaving me with nothing for the next day. Have stopped using it ever since.
Nowadays, my battery drains heavily when screen is on(when im using the phone). Drains roughly about 1% for every 2 mins im using it, but standby time is still great at 2% overnight...

The new Froyo beta JPC. Same settings as always - WiFi always on (which by the way seems to be default setting on JPC). Everything else standard (it won't switch to 3G while using WiFi).
So it seems like their are a lot of differences in battery life throughout the forums so I thought it would be a good idea to collect some info and try to see if we cant figure out whats causing the issues.
EDIT: nevermind lets post this to a google spreadsheet for easier analysis. After you post to the spreadsheet... please post your timestamp. For example I am the first to post so my timestamp is: 10/22/2010 10:12:29.

Battery Info
What is TWS (Time without a signal):
Go here: home->settings->about phone->Battery use-> cell standby
The theory is that if you have a high percentage of TWS, that probably means your phone is spending a lot of time looking for service. This may be because the phone is set to wcdma or unknown (you can see this by dialing *#4636*1111# then clicking on phone info). In theory, if the phone is constantly searching for different towers (maybe gsm) then it will use a bunch of battery.
Discussion on TWS:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=772571
The "air plane fix":
This is a method of resetting the radio. This seems to make the TWS stop getting so high. Their are claims that this helps battery life.
- turn on air plane mode
- wait 15-30 seconds
- turn off air plane mode.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
This info below is just for reference... it is some of the stuff that I think we should collect.
So... here is some info I think we should all start to post.
Facts:
First, dial *#4636*1111# and click on battery information. Post the following when unplugged:
- Battery level
- Battery health
- Battery Voltage
- Battery temp
Now hit back and click on phone info.. post:
- signal strength
- network type
- gsm service
- gprs service
- Set preferred network type (wait 5 seconds or so, this will probably turn to unkown)
Now go to home->settings->about phone-> battery use
- tell what the top 4 items are in order
Then click cell standby and post:
- cell standby percentage
- time on
- time without a signal
hit back then click on voice calls and post:
- voice calls percentage
- time on
What rom are you using
What kernel are you using
What battery "tweaks" do you use (airplane trick, drm disable, etc...)
Do you use any software that may help (juice defender, tasker, auto start killer, auto task manager, etc...)
Do you have stock battery?
Opinions:
How many hours do you get out of your phone in a normal day?
What does your "normal" usage look like?
Is their anything else you want to tell use about how you use your phone?
Its a good idea, but there are just too many variables. I get amazing battery life, and I know exactly why I do. I use the Mixup Kernel, which lowers the voltage on the processor. I use SetCPU, which lowers the clock speed of the phone when its not needed. I use juicedefender, which turns off the radio and wifi when not in use. I have brightness set to automatic, and since I have the Mixup kernel, it works flawlessly.
Now people with push email who have their data connection always on and have facebook, twitter, etc auto updating constantly will have atrocious battery life. I can easily get 24 -36 hours out of mine sending about 50 texts and making 5-10 calls a day with some light browsing and game/music playing.

Yeah, I agree that there are too many variables. But I think all the items you mentioned really have little to do with it for those of us w/ extreme battery loss. Mainly because I have done all those things and I still saw my battery plummet.
Although in the end, it could just be that those of us w/ terrible battery... might just have defective phones.
This isn't a thread for when your battery drain is excessive on standby, this is a thread dedicated to figuring out how to simply get more power to the phone for extended runtime.
I'm using a 5000 mah external battery pack for extra charge, and it seems to be good enough to last me at least an extra day or two of usage, which is great. It seems like the only other options are cutting up the battery door to fit an extended battery from the evo 3D or just carrying extra batteries...
Best easy change for me was always using wifi instead of the network when at home and work. Made a huge improvement

So....how to get the most time out of your battery in standby?
As you've allready said:
One of the biggest improvements is possible by using a Sensation or Evo3D battery. With that i get a nice 1% per hour in standby. (It's actually a bit lower than 1%).
While not using the phone it's unnessecary to have 3G activated. Recieving emails and texts via whatsapp, viber etc via 2G is good enough. For everything that is more datahungry you can allways activate 3G manually.
Keep background data turned off. I use K9 Mail which works independently and Whatsapp recieves messages too. But a lot of other stuff doesn't syncronize which means less wakelocks and thus less power consumption.
Same with locations. As long as you don't WANT to tell google your every step you can keep network based location turned off.
If you need a location fix quickly you can allways turn on gps for a moment. After using the FasterFix app (i guess you need root for that), i get a gps lock in 5 seconds, so i can determin my location really fast and share it with others (for intance via whatsapp) without having to keep it on all the time.
And last but not least:
You probably don't need to know the current outside temperature every 5 minutes. So set that to manual update too.
Doing these things doesn't turn my smartphone into an overweight dumbphone with a battery problem and i get a maximum of over 4 days of standby time out of it.
Normally my battery holds for roughly 35 hours (1 day and 11 hours), but it's usually awake for 1/4th of the time serving as my newspaper and video and mp3 player.
/edit:
Totally forgot:
Use llama!
You'll never have to worry about forgetting to set your phone on vibrate while at work and setting it to loud at home.
You can configure it so it only activates wifi at home and turns it off again if you didn't connect to any access point after a set amount of time. I haven't had to activate/deactivate wifi manually for ages without having to worry about it constantly searching for networks and sucking my battery dry!

Exactly what he said, but you can automate a lot of it by using an app called Tasker. I use it to sync all data on my phone for 3 minutes every 4 hours so it's always up to date. It can also automate the GPS on/off depending which app I use so it switches on when I open CoPilot and turns off again when I close it.
Tasker can also replace Llama if you can find 'profiles. to do it. Llama looks pretty good though.
I think the biggest drain is the display. With auto brightness on, the sensor will monitor the changes in your surrounding every second the moment you turn on the screen. Turn that off and manually control the brightness save a lot of battery.
Or just use lower autobrightness script.
I use Invisibright. Long hold on search softkey + slide enables me to set the brightness to whatever I want in a second no matter what apps are running.

It is still useless as your sensor is still working every time you turn on your screen. The sensor is draining your battery. Not the brightness value.
Autobrightness sensor drain
So you think that there is a greater drain from the light sensor than from an uncontrolled screen brightness?
Interesting thought. I'll manually set my brightness level a round20% for the next charge cycle and see what effect it has, though I suspect that as my display currently accounts for 20% of battery drain it won't make all that much difference.
I use juice defender and I think its actually working.
