I got a Dell Streak about 2 weeks ago and did the 2.2 update the first time I turned it on and it saw wifi...I got it from Dell as an unlocked device...I noticed that it would not read the 16gb sd card that it came with so I called Dell and I got a replacement today..
Now here is my question: should I run 1.6 as is or update to 2.2...Is there any big differences here as far as being stable, rooting, custom roms and things like that...
Also I plan to use this as a tablet running strictly wifi if possible with no particular plan or carrier...
Please help....thanks.....
2.2 is like a brand new phone. Their are guides all around on how to do this. Then if you go to a rom like DJ Steve 1.6. Its like getting a new phone again. Not an exaggeration. I had my doubts for a long time, slowly made the move and so happy I did.
If you have an unlocked unit then you can update to 2 2 upon first boot. I would definitely do the update to 2.2 much better than 1.6 then I would suggest going to DJ steve's custom rom. Its so much better than stock 2.2.

I have read good things about Froyo (Android 2.2) and would like to upgrade my EVO running 2.1 to this version. But I am a chicken**** when it comes to rooting my phone. So can a straight OS upgrade be done? If I upgrade, can I roll back to 2.1 if necessary?
According to Gizmodo: "If you bought an Android phone recently, Froyo's what it will eventually be running." Eventually my ass...I want it now!!

Only if you root can you get it before the official release.
Well, considering that most "in the know" sources are saying the 2.2 release will be in June, and we only have two weeks left in June, I think I'll wait.
You will most likely be waiting more than two weeks for a nonroot upgrade to froyo on your evo, haha. Read up

Do we know for a fact 2.2 is coming to the already sold Dell Streaks and not just the ones sold after the update?
Hi cirian75
Yes Dell stated before the Streak even started being sold that it would be getting an OTA direct from Dell to 2.2 in September. There is no way they would just put it on new Streaks and not upgrade those already sold especially as they will only be a few months old.
Marc
cool, just gotta track one down now for not stupid money.

Like Dogmann said they don't like to Affect there image specially at the moment of the launch of the new tablets running Android OS with 7,10 & 11.5 in screens.
Yup you have to remember that the Streak is Dell's flagship smartphone.
They have an entire ecosystem of tablets coming out all based on android.
To screw up and not put 2.X on the phones is not in their best interests.
on one of Dell's blogs (direct2dell) its been mentioned a number of times about an OTA froyo, even just a week ago about Dell and Adobe Flash
http://en.community.dell.com/dell-b...0/06/23/dell-and-adobe-flash-player-10-1.aspx
As I mentioned in my Streak post, when the Froyo upate comes to it later this year, it too will have Flash capability.

We'll utilize that flexibility via over-the-air updates for platform upgrades, Adobe Flash 10.1 on Android 2.2 later this year, plus other enhancements like video chat applications and more.

Don't hold your breath for a September release; if it happens this great but prepare yourself for a Oct/Nov release so then they are can start working on update the Streak to Android 3.0 by Dec/Jan
can someone tell me has the streak go 512mb of ram program memory? i know it has a 512mb rom chip and 2gb flash storage what about ram some say 256mb some say 510mb whats the truth? if its going to able to run gingerbread 3.0 min spec is 512mb.
Yes 512MB, but like all such androids right now only 399/408 is usable to apps. I think its a software thing, so if we get gingerbread all 512 will be there in some form.
This is awesome so we know that the dell steak will capable of handing gigerbread man thingy majig.

I don't know when the next update is but I read they would have the "Gingerbread" update on the first of January... that is a lifetime away .. What would 2.2 give me that 1.6 won't? Came with 1.6 BTW .. I had Nexus One and I don't see any difference really. Maybe I am just not that well informed, plus I have only had this less than 24 hours .. Comes unlocked to ATT and T-Mobile. [those are the 2 cards I tried.]

2.2 is much better than 1.6 in many ways. Wifi hotspot, voice text entry to name a few!

Hi shEEEsh
Well 2.2 really is a major leap forward compared to 1.6 to 2.1 it is far more then just a few added apps or UI enhancements one of the main improvements is the Jit compiler i think that's the correct term. Anyway when they added 2.2 to the Nexus One with all the enhancements it brings performance improved by something like 200-500% which anyway you look at it is huge. The difference between 1.6 with the customised Dell UI and apps is hardly noticeable when compared to 2.1 the same won't be true once we get 2.2 and i just hope it comes early September or even earlier via Custom Roms.
Marc
... not to mention internet shaing via wi-fi tethering (without having to root and install an app) and USB. That, plus flash and the performance enhancements makes me very much look forward to 2.2!
To all of you that's been anxiously waiting for the android 2.1 firmware upgrade, I just finished talking with a sony rep and they have plans to start rolling out the update by the end of October. So hopefully in a couple of weeks we should start seeing some updates for this phone. I don't know about anbody else, but, I'm not pleased at all with 1.6 at the moment.

You have waited two years to tell us something we already know? It was your first post and you should have waited to at least tell us some good news.
There is already a thread for 2.1 news which you should have posted there.
Oooooooh yournot pleased with 1.6????? SO????? Who cares??? I personally think the x10 is a great phone, it does everything I need it to do, from satnav (co pilot) to reading me ebooks (moon+ reader), im sick and tired of people slagging a phone off just because of the firmware, I had a G1 on day of release and that was android V1, my son still uses said G1 and its still a great phone, some people should really get a life
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
While the X10 only runs 1.6 its still far nicer than my nexus one running 2.2 (froyo) well when I had my nexus one anyways lol.

I think i wont be wrong if i say this " Dell streak is living in stone age"
coz Google's Android platform turns 3, Gingerbread due on 11 November
and where we are
Factory Shipment:1.6
Update:2.1
Dj Steve Unofficial :2.2
Official Update 2.2: Sorry i havent got my cristal ball with me today
cheers
agreed the software is behind. But the hardware is right on par. To me the more important thing is the hardware - because the software can be upgraded (as seen with Steve's Froyo).
I too was skeptic about not having a recent update to Android on this device. Regardless this device is miles ahead of my old Touch Pro 2. 2.2 is coming and I'm sure there's a lot of behind-the-scenes legal mumbo-jumbo responsible for the schedule. Dell is new to the smartphone game and I'm sure there's a learning curve.
Anyone on XDA is probably here for the same reason. We want the BEST for our phones, but, waiting on carriers to release updated roms is like waiting for paint to dry.
The suits in charge of the carriers probably have to have a dozen or more meetings before they release an update, if they even update it at all.
Another reason I think the carriers should get out of the hardware business and
just be a provider. Yes, probably more headaches trying to make everything compatible, but just look at the Asian markets, and the numerous options they have for hardware. What to the states get? A few phones a year.
1.6 came out about a year ago, the streak was probably slated for its release then. its amazing the small gaps between major software releases from google. im just hoping froyo for the streak comes out before gingerbread does. i like knowing my device runs on the latest and greatest, even if its only for a day.
I for 1 was happy it came with 1.6 it gave me chance to play with 1.6 and 2.1 and next is 2.2 and after 3.0 so in my eyes its like haveing 4 different devices

In fact if you change the launcher you can barely notice the differences between the Android versions.
I started with adw and have more recently been playing with launcher pro.
Except flash, wifi hotbot, new gmail in 2.2 ;-)

Very few would be my guess, I'm a UK unlocked Streak owner & still no update for me.
I have asked Stephen twice via twitter about it but he doesn't bother to respond

lol...i wasnt talking abt getting rid of the streak!!...and probably am as 'eccentric a tabletphone user' as you are..
i was talking abt waiting for dell/o2 to give me wat I want..
but as it turns out...i am staying well inside the room and waiting for the official thing to come out...whenever it does..

Indeed, I feel your pain. I mean what a terrible tragedy, having to wait almost a full month before a slightly updated operating system for your mobile phone becomes available. Nobody should have to bear such a tragic burden in their life. Have you asked whether the European Commission on Human Rights will take your case up?
On the other hand, you could just go to Argos and buy one - they are advertising that their Streaks come with 2.2.
@philip...ha ha I am sure you are being sarcastic there...
no thanks but Ill stick to my current o2 locked streak...cause currenly having 2.1 instead of 2.2 doesnt really make a big difference to my existance on earth...
it's just the 'customer unawareness' of dell/o2 which bothers me...nuthin else..
Dell, carriers?
If Dell "officially" releases the update, then the carriers pack their crap onto the update, does Dell have to check it for compatibility before the carriers sign off on it? Or do the carriers send their crap to Dell, dell packages it into their OS, then tests it, and then the carriers sign off on it?
God knows I wouldn't defend the manufacturer or the carrier, but does anyone know the procedure?
THIS is a glaring example of why carriers need to get the $*#&% out of the hardware/software side of the wireless phone business, and become pipes.
(In the USA) it use to be, you provide the phone, we provide the dial tone.
Now, I'm not naive enough to know why the carriers want to stay in the hardware
side of the business, but, as phones, software evolve, they need to seriously consider changing (in the USA) their business model.
At least DELL UK sell accessories for the streak........we have nothing in Australia
Not even a charger!!!
f**k the dell and o2 upgrading to 2.2 with dj steve had enough with their sh*t
we the first person to buy these f*cking device in uk and we are getting at last seriously love the device but dell a complete dirt company to deal with
To be fair, 02 added very little bloat to the Streak. Either 1.6 or 2.2. I personally would rather wait a couple of weeks for them to sort out the bugs in the thus far released 2.2 builds before it hits O2.
I'm currently using 2.1 with a mildly tweaked build.prop & ADW Launcher and other than the lack of flash it isn't lacking much.
Maybe I'm just more chilled as I'm getting older but I don't really see that the sky is falling down just because I have to wait a few days more for a phone firmware update.
Dell are fixing some of the bugs (hopefully more than some) in the initial 00 released roms..
you wouldn't want them to send the o2 ones out with something that stopped you watching iplayer would you?
Same here stateside...would rather wait until it is RIGHT...before updating.
When I was younger, as soon as a point release would come out, I'd jump on it.
Not so much anymore. I want stable.
I use to go bleeding edge on hardware for the PC, tweaking and tweaking to get the performance, and then living with unstable systems.
Last pc I built replaced one that I built and was stable for over six years, running 24/7. The one I built, should be as stable for another six.

The 'official' update was withdrawn until some bug fixes are done, anything you download just now will be unofficial and buggy.
