New g2 - G2 and Desire Z General

Ok as you can tell.im on my phone I've searchedit and everything but....I should be getting my tmobile g2 later today but since its new it'll come with the ota update preloaded. If I follow tue downgrade instructions will I be able to permroot it or what?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App

I think you can permroot with the OTA if I'm not mistaken...
Not 100% cuz im new to G2 but I just did a permroot and mine has wifi calling, tethering etc. that you get from the OTA...
I used this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833965
which has different files to use if you have the OTA or not, which pretty clearly shows that you can permroot with the OTA.

I think you're confusing it with the Desire Z. The G2 hasn't had any OTA updates if I recall correctly.

G2 definitely has had an OTA update. It didn't have wifi calling and wifi tethering at release, and received an update to add these features.
Hence why in the guide, there are different files for "pre-OTA" and "OTA".
and hence why there was tons of stuff about downgrading from the OTA to previous software in order to try and permroot.

All this was in response to the recent OTA for the Desire Z. The G2 had an earlier OTA, but there were no issues with rooting for that one.

Yes the G2 had an OTA from 1.19 to 1.22, and yes you can root either version, you don't need to downgrade to root, also if the phone comes with the original rom 1.19 my suggestion would be to root it with 1.19 and don't apply the update to 1.22, incase something went wrong with rooting, we have a complete 1.19 PC10IMG signed zip that will save you.

I ran Gfree successfully and if you look in my Signature I have never flashed a new radio, Ive always had Radio-12.28b.60.14eU_26.03.02.26_M. This is the radio that was shipped with my phone and gfree worked.

Yeah I Reread the wiki and i was reading under the Z lol stupid me but now im having a driver problem how do i install them? i type adb devices and nothing shows.

Try installing HTC sync, it doesnt actully function with the G2 because it is Sense based (made for Desire Z) but it will install the correct drivers, just install the HTC sync program on you computer, once installed just plug the phone in and it will install the correct drivers:
http://www.htc.com/europe/SupportViewNews.aspx?dl_id=982&news_id=737
EDIT: Fixed Link

Ok So now im getting permission denied when i try to push the files to the phone
EDIT: Nevermind got it to work. Thanks for your help joemm!

No problem, and just got confirmation from david279 who just rooted his brand New G2 today, that you can indeed still root the 26.03.02.26 radio with Wiki Gfree instructions. HERES the thread he confirmed it in posts 15 and 17.

G2: is there a one click perm root?

Is there something like unrEVOked out? I really like how easy it is to root on a EVO and how any unexperienced person can root there phone without much hassle.
HTC seriously ramped up the security on the Vision (G2 and Desire Z). It's not a one-click thing to root, sorry. But it's not hard if you follow the instructions carefully.

Nope there are none. Well you can easily prem root your phone with s-off pretty easily without adb. You should read android development section. i used the old way of getting s-off cause its the fastest way... but if you want the safest way gfree method will do.
Follow the guide on the WIKI of XDA. It's simple and easy. I got it and it's my first time rooting anything. Just read everything carefully and good luck!
Also, if it makes you feel any better, I also read that the method posted on the WIKI page results in very few bricked devices (if any at all for that matter!). Go for it!
Does anyone know what version of ADB/SU should be used to Root the new Desire Z OTA Update? And if this is possible wo Downgrade? I see the Wiki is not too updated

Any version of adb.

If you are talking about the 1.72 OTA then you can use psneuter to get root, rage won't work at that level. That assumes you already have used gfree at a previous version to get radio S-OFF. Otherwise you have to downgrade.

its okay if you want TEMP
Easy enough to do if you take your time, and well worth it. I had never used ADB before but following along slowly got it to work (took a while to figure out to move all the files I wanted to 'push' into the adb directory!); and although I lost all my games progress (the horror of having to start Angry Birds over again!), I got back all my texts etc. from Google after moving back up to 1.72. There are backup programs in the market that should backup your apps if you want also.
Well worth it if you need root for MarketEnabler like I did; ClockworkMod is nice too for backing up.

Yeah, you won't be able to go back . However, for your general connection issue, I experienced the same thing, downloading HTC Sync worked for me.
I don't know if I'm missing something, but are you still s-off? Do you have a custom recovery like Clockwork or Amon-Ra?

If you do, you should be able to flash any ROM you want, possibly even downgrade the hboot (which I believe is what's keeping you from using the RUU, not that it matters if you can flash ROMs).

Yes, you can but it's a pain in the butt. Go to this thread and then download the original stock firmware. Make sure USB debugging is turned on also.
To install the file you need to have HTC Sync installed and running. Double-click the file and it should recognize the phone and start installing after some input from you.
If you get a USB error, try booting into the bootloader and installing the exe in the same manner.
I just did this last night because I was in the same situation. It works.
Now you can re-root.

It's still the same update. Whether I installed it through an OTA update or from the bootloader doesn't matter.
You guys can get into the bootloader right? Take one of those modified "official" updates, rename it to PG06IMG.zip and flash it from the bootloader. Then do my first post and flash to Froyo so you can root again. May be worth a shot.

Unless you have an engineering bootloader, like after you rooted, you can only flash an an un modified pg0610.zip from htc. So any one who took an over the air update is SOL on that front. Best hope now is that the evo 3d root can be applied here

So I lost my phone..the new one came in last night. And it came with 2.3.4.. I tried to down grade it..followed all the instructions from the forum and everything worked fine..until the bootloader part. It said that it couldn't find the

Look in the vision g2 section I was in the same boat as you there is a tut in those forums for downgrading to 2.2.1 with adb it also works for mt4g wish I still had link but its there
Same here... Lost my phone and received the replacement yesterday (off course version 2.3.4). Turned out it is a refurbished, the speaker not working, the earpiece not working. I missed another release of lovely Miui
I just happened to see this post and am curious what the problem is... Why are you downgrading it???
I have a Mytouch 4g (HTC Glacier) which was having issues and I just got the replacement. I have not even turn it on, but I have not doubt it will be 2.3.3-- their latest OTA udpate.
Is there going to be any problem rooting this?? Again, it alarmed me that people were trying to downgrade..

There is no method to root 2.3.4 yet. That's why people have to downgrade.
Do you mean like downgrade from 2.3.4 to 2.2.1 root it, and then upgrade to 2.3.4?
But the only way to do that is if we had the stock 2.3.4 rom, which we don't have, correct?
So I can skip the root and wait, or I can downgrade and be able to use 50% of the apps which I would otherwise be unable to use as they require root.
This sucks.... I am sure someone is working hard on this... but I am surprised there has not been any method (even one that was risky -- as in one typo and you've bricked it) figured out by someone...
Ummm.. Next question then, Can anyone tell me any obvious benefits of the TMO 2.3.4 stock? Is it fast, or mediocre? Or is it just worthless due to the fact that you cannot root it?

Didn't quite understand what you mean but yes, if you got the phone pre-installed with TMO's 2.3.4 then there's no way to root that. You would have to downgrade back to Froyo then root it.
There really are no benefits to TMO's stock 2.3.4 since CM7 2.3.5, VU's 2.3.4 and MIUI's 2.3.5 GB are all better and faster. And even if you liked TMO's GB version for some reason there are rooted and deodexed versions to flash in the dev section. So there really is no downside to rooting.
And as previously stated, the only way to downgrade would be to use that thread in the G2 section which requires ADB.
If you have any questions I just finished downgrading my replacement phone and and rooting via gfree last night.
And before last night I've never even used ADB before.
Found 2 threads that helped me do just that.
Got it all downgraded then followed a video to root gfree. (mackster248)
(Never rooted that way before either.)
Anyway PM if you need help. Maybe I can help you out.

Yes you would half to downgrade to 2.2.1 to root there is no way to root 2.3.4 right now
Yea, unlike most of the other HTC. Phones that got a 2.3.4 update, revolution doesn't support unlocking the mytouch 4g without a downgrade. On the first page of this thread I posted a link to downgrade and the easiest way I found to root. Someone also posted links on this page. I found a few other root methods but they required you to install apps to gain temp root access or download files on the phones browser. The link I found actually only requires you to dl and unzip a few files to your PC and run maybe 10 or 12 commands in a terminal. Very easy.

Seems like even a year later the best method to root the mytouch 4g is downgrading. I can see why people hate HTC phones

A little more work for a better build quality is worth it.

[Q] Root....?

When will the mytouch 4g 2.3.4 be rooted?! I read on October 1 that it'll be rooted "in the coming weeks"...its nearly November. Anyone have any updates at all? Or will 2.3.4 never be rooted? Thank you for all of your help!
likely never

downgrade
I have tried that available link to downgrade but all in vain. i successfully got temp root but not able to perem root. so when i put downgraded stock rom, recieving message newer version is there and visionary is not helpful in my case.
Any idea how to do that .
The only reason i want to root is my camera . i dont know what happened to it. but whenever i try to use my camera it ended up in blank screen.
I am not good in that but thinking to change the rom maybe it resolve my problem
Any help / guidance thanks in advance.

What do you mean newer version? Are you following the downgrade guide that requires adb to push, execute some files, and flash all by adb. When you downgrade, you don't simply flash the pd15img.zip you should follow the guide.

Look in my signature, see a link to Wiki. Open it, go to section "Root", subsection "Gingerbread 2.3.4". There will be a guide which needs to be executed IN FULL.
Try and read this with caution NOT ME OR THE PERSON WHO MADE THIS IS REPONSIBLE... it has a one click downgrade and a one click root.. after all that is down, there's a root version of gingerbread available... one step at a time...
