Hi Folks,
Hoping someone can answer these?
On the connection manager window on the new imate rom I have a couple of icons which appear to do nothing. The first one is on the bottom left under the phone icon and looks like a pda with left & right arrows. It is greyed out and i'm wondering what it's for?
The second is the pushmail icon at the very bottom. This is also greyed out. Under settings the only options I have are bluetooth or wifi settings - is this normal?
Though not a user of pushmail, how do you set it up? When I add an email account i only get options for pop or imap. Is pushmail setup something i only get when i add a new server source?
Thanks
"looks like a pda with left & right arrows"
is data on or off, ie gprs is connected or not,
push mail you need to add a server source, an exchange server,
4smartphone.net has a 14 day trial you can mess with. just remember you dont need to do the sms address bit when setting up.

Thanks for the info. I figured that might be the case with pushmail.
Regarding the gprs icon - i can only use it to turn off gprs. If gprs is off the icon is greyed out. Any ideas? It's not a huge issue because i use gprs monitor to turn on/off gprs from the today screen anyway...
rather than try and connect, i just directly use the app and gprs will connect itself as and when its required.
intresting point about not being able to turn it on from that icon tho, the app isnt really that clear when it comes to whats just an icon and whats a button, the active sync icon is the same.

As do I generally... Interesting comment about the activesync icon. Makes you wonder why they call it connection manager if it manages but a few things...

Well I've done both settings completely. I still have problems though. I tried to open an internet page and it srill keeps saying open. The phone doesn't freeze or anything it just keeps saying opening. And when I tried erecieving apicture message it just says Downlaoding:0%. And I also can't sen. I noticed those are for the mda also and they aren't exactly the same with connections. Might that be the problem?
Well I managed to fix my mms messages with this link
http://www.pdaphonehome.com/forums/...0/41141-pda2k-t-mobile-gprs-mms-settings.html
I still need help with the internet though. Anyhelp is greatly appreciated. Also, with the sttings I got form the site, does t5hat mean UI can only browse wap pages and not www?

Yeah, but I can't help; I've NEVER been able to get MMS working on my i-mate Jasjar (WM5), despite coaching from T-Mobile and following all the links here. It connects via GPRS to T-Mobile, but it won't send or receive an MMS! Sorry. Cheers,

I'm using T-Mobile. Although in the Netherlands.
I had to use "internet" as the accesspoint name (step 9 in that data account step by step instruction), but I guess that's just different for the US. I also had to use CHAP authentication in the GPRS settings instead of PAP.
BTW I saw another step by step and this seems to be for internet connections rather than wap connections:
Use Your Phone As A Modem
Tap Start.
Tap Settings.
Tap on the Connections tab.
Tap the Connections icon.
Tap Add a new modem connection under T-Mobile GPRS.
Enter T-MobileInternet in the Enter a name for the connection field.
Tap to select Cellular Line (GPRS) from the Select a modem drop down list.
Tap Next.
Enter internet2.voicestream.com in the Access point name field.
Tap Next.
Tap Finish.
The new Internet profile is now configured and ready for use.
SOLVED! With screenshots!
I said above I couldn't help, but in the meantime, I've solved my own problems and posted the screenshots and procedures, which I hope might help you. Here's the solution with screenshots!
Basically: first, revise the T-Mobile USA procedures to eliminate any leading zeroes in IP addresses (e.g. change "...050..." to "...50..."), and second, after making your changes, be sure to power off the device (briefly press the power button and release), and then repower it. Hope this helps! Cheers,
Hi All,
I'm traveling from the US (Cingular 8525) to England and Ireland next week. I spoke with the AT&T guys and they said it's quite expensive for data usage there if I'm internationally roaming. I'm currently running WM6 Black Shadow at the moment (which changes frequently). Is there a surefire way to disable the data connection so that even if I accidentally hit my Internet Explorer button or my email tries to sync, it's blocked? Ideally this would be some switch I could easily toggle. Also, does anybody have an idea how much text messages would be if I sent or received them while abroad?
Any help would be great.
Thanks in advance!
-Drew
Check out Paul at modaco. He's written an app, IIRC, that does this.

Easiest thing to do......delete your GPRS settings?? (obviously write them down)
Even easier ... You can set up a connection in settings->connections->connections with obviously incorrect values for AccessPoint (none.att), username ([email protected]) and password (wrongpw), and then set that as the locked connection while you're traveling. Then you can easily toggle it on & off as needed.

BTW, This thread shouldn't be in the WM6 Forum. Would have fit better in the General Hermes section, I think, where mikechannon would've been happy to assist.

Who needs 3G when your EDGE can perform even better? If you configure your MEdia Net setting with the AT&T proxy setting (HTTP: wireless.cingular.com:80, Socks: localhost:1080), then you can get EDGE up to +500kbps easily. The only problem that I encountered (thus far) is that you can't update weather, stocks, or even play youtube (it'll load the search but just wouldn't play)....and I'm sure some people are aware of that. Now if you want everything to work, all you have to do is uncheck the proxy server box, but in doing so, your EDGE speed comes crawling at 100-150kbps.
So my question is, is there a way to modify the registry to get the weather, stock and possibly youtube to work over AT&T proxy?
EDIT::
I'm using Opera 9.7 build35627
On the address bar, type in opera:config
Go 3/4th of the way down on the list and you'll find PROXY.
now on the fifth line you'll see HTTP server and you'll type in wireless.cingular.com:80
Go down a bit and you'll see USE HTTP. check that box.
Save. Exit and restart Opera.

It's AT&T's proxy server that is blocking the data, so your answer is no.
great work-around!
Now to figure out if I can get this to work on Fido/Rogers
Great news for AT&T users!
I wonder how many other networks around the world offer such speed increases with changing a few settings like this.

I wouldn't be shocked if other carriers have the similar proxy implementation. It's weird because the older connectionsetup v103 doesn't pick up the proxy setting for AT&T, only the newer connection setup did.
Well this is nice found.
Just to clear my own mind I have some questions.
Isn't 3G and EDGE are in different radios on your phone? Like having a high speed internet on your phone line?
EDGE doesn't let you to use your internet while you are talking on your cellphone?
I like this config though, I hope we can find some ways to fix this permenant.
Cheers and thanks for letting us know.

Yes, 3G frequency is different from the GSM (EDGE). I'm just helping those who have a Euro HD2 (stuck with EDGE) or any HD2, but would rather conserve battery by sticking to EDGE. GSM is quadband so you'll get more and better signal coverage than say, 3G, so the chances of you getting good reception everywhere you go is very great. I have 3G and HSPA with my T9193 but honestly, I don't spend most of my time on the net, so it's good to have 850mhz UMTS, though it's not needed in my case. EDGE works just fine
Some devices before like my Diamond and my friend's HD, their 3G speed is around 400-500kbps...which is abysmal when EDGE on the HD2 can perform even better It's just a neat thing for you to have if you want both GOOD battery lilfe and FAST internet. Sure, you sacrifice talk-n-surf, but it's not important for me. I can always turn on 3G/HSDA if i wanted.
lude219,
Thank you for the answer. I do own a European version right now and I take the phone out of charge by 7 AM and then by the end of the night (same day) I have %10 left. I don't use too much internet but just recieve emails. Do you think that when I get 3G phone it will consume more than this? I should start carying a Car's battery with me.
Nothing is perfect. I like the idea of the EDGE/
I will update when I have both phone in hand...
I guess since nobody is mentioning this it can't work but I'll be the dumb one and ask anyway. Is there any way to get this to work on T-Mobile USA? I don't have the knowledge of proxies like you guys do. I have a 3G US version but 3G reception is horrible at my house and I would love to have it stick on Edge at certain times with increased speed. My 3G gives me pretty poor bandwidth overall anyway, certainly less than 500kbps on average. Can it be done on Tmo?

EDIT:: So stupid of me for not figuring this out sooner. If anyone's interested, type "about:config" into opera and go down the list until you see proxy server. Under HTTP, type in "wireless.cingular.com:80" and check the HTTP box further down the list. Save. Exit. Restart opera! I just did a test and it rack in 566kbps on EDGE. Stock tab and weather stab still work!

ive tried this a few times and its just not working, on opera its saying gateway timed out, any help appreciated.
before the biggest HOOORAY!!! i have a few questions..
does this only works for Opera. Do we get the same speed in IE or maybe skyfire (since we are only applying the proxy under Opera)??
If so, how about downloading using Opera?
and last
what speedtest are you using? I went to speedtest mobile and got lower than 28.8k and am using At&t edge here in the east coast.. (please note i have not started doing the above procedure)
my settings: (personally selected to make sure i am not going to be charge because i currently has iphone 2g plan in my att and did not call them to register my phone since i am using Edge as well)
Baseband - Bands
Network type: GSM -> selected
Band Frequesncy: GSM (1900+850) selected
Advanced Network
HSDPA/HSUPA -> Disabled

So is this possible to do with T-Mobile USA? They have both Edge and 3G so shouldn't a similar setting be available for them as well? Thank you.
