OK so hopefully my N1 should get to me tomorrow, and I'm wanting to put a ROM on it (think its just running stock 2.2.1 ATM according to the seller).
I'm quite drawn to MIUI at the minute, because of speed and battery life, and I quite like the hybrid iphone/android look, but I have read some comments that this isn't quite an every day ROM just yet, as it has a few issues and bugs.
The other I keep reading about is CM6 but what is battery life and speed like? Is this a more complete ROM than MIUI or am I better off with the former?
Are there any good ROMs I should consider other than those - I am after something that is fast, reliable, and pretty (the pretty isn't essential but is desirable).
I know I could look for myself, but I figured that opinions from those who've tried different ROMs in anger would be very useful.
It really is a personal preference thing. So try them all, that's the great thing about the N1.
I didn't like miui, too iPhoney, but a very nice rom none the less.
CM6 is the rom I use, very complete and feature packed. Speed is excellent but battery life less than others. But with IntersectRaven's kernel I get pretty good battery life
Enomther rom is another good one, with really good battery life. Evil's sense ports are really good too
But really you have to try them, you will find one you like
Best of luck, and welcome to one of the best phones you will ever own

Crazy idea, if you're new to Android, how about using the stock ROM for a while? Even if you're not new, using the stock ROM is a good way to gauge if the phone is solid.. If you put $random_rom on it and you have problems you won't know if it's the phone, the ROM, your apps, etc..

I'm not totally new to android - my girlfriend has an HTC Magic with Cupcake on it, and I've briefly owned an HTC Desire (had a fault) and have had a Galaxy S for the last 4 months (which I'm getting rid of because it's unreliable).... but you do make a good point about the phone, so thanks I may do that, but I'd still like suggestions because I can't see it staying stock for long
Evil D:'s NXSense is pretty awesome!
+1 for staying stock. Once you find something you want to do but stock won't let you, then it's time to go with custom rom.
-Sent from my Nexus One Superphone.
MIUI is stable and is my everyday ROM based on speed, battery life and stability. If you don't like the default iPhone looking launcher, just use LauncherPro.
Enothemer's ROM is also very nice.
I thought CM6 was the bomb but realised that Enothemer/MIUI had most of what I needed to tinker with anyways. Battery life was horrid with CM6.

I've yet to find anything the stock ROM can do that Evil's NXSense can't... However, NXSense will do plenty that stock won't.

I'm using v1.15 of Evil's NXSense ROM, and I absolutely love it! It's fairly stable and the battery life is great -- I routinely can go 48 hours with light-moderate use. I'm particularly impressed with Sense, which is so much better than I believed it could be.
The only thing I miss from stock is the unified inbox for email.
"Fairly" stable you say? :-s
Incidentally I've just read about the fact the power button on it WILL break, is it really that flimsy :-o I was under the impression these things were well built?
Anyway thanks for the ideas, I always thought sense on the htc desire was pretty nice, is this evil d rom better than that?
Might have to get myself swype as I'm quite used to it on the sgs now.

Please don't make it look like MIUI comes from Enom, kthx.
Run the stock rom long enough to learn what it is, otherwise you dont know what you had to start with and wont know what you gained or lost. Its good to keep in mind that most roms will only partly meet your needs and will likely have something in them you dont want where you might actually prefer the stock version over whatever was added. You wont know that if you dont fiddle with stock long enough to see what it brings to the table. If you are relatively new to flashing roms consider a conservative stability first rom like enom to start out.
MIUI is what i'm currently using and i'm really digging it
it's got good battery life and an overall good experience
highly reccomend to use it with launcher pro though, as the iphone look is very ugly/cluttered IMO
if i were you though i'd hold off on MIUI since it does have a few bugs and since you're just getting the phone tomorrow it'd be kinda hard to distinguish if the problem was with your phone or the rom,
on that note, staying stock for a couple days wouldn't hurt but if you're anything like most of us here you're probably eager to get some custom roms on there
anyway i digress, enom's got the best battery life hands down and there's plenty of tweaks and customizations (although not as many as cyanogen's of course) and it's an extremely stable and dependable rom. for me it's kinda like my "go-to rom"
as for cyan's rom, it's a nice rom with an myriad of tweaks and options but i've always had battery life issues with it.
evil's nxsense is also a sweet rom if you're into sense and battery life/stability isn't too bad on it.
actually, any way you slice it, you're gonna have a great rom on your phone! so i say try 'em all and have fun haha
Hey, ive been looking for an answer to this for a long time on youtube and google, but all ive found is a night version of cyneagon. I want a stable and fast version, not a nightly version that has bugs. Thanks for looking!
Try and benchmark your own...Even with speed you still have personal preference of Sense vs Gingerbread.
I like Sense, and have been using Ice Glacier happily. Doesn't seem "slow" at all; everything is very responsive. Is CM7 or a non-Sense build faster? Maybe, but I don't really know and probably won't find out since I don't want to give up the Sense UI yet.
to kinda second/expound on what Genocaust said... If you want fast and stable, first you need to decide if you want AOSP (Vanilla Android), Sense or Espresso Sense (TMO version of Sense).
AOSP = either eVil D's G2 Port or CM6.1.2 RC2. both very nice and stable but I don't think the G2 port has working FFC (Front Facing Camera)
Espresso Sense = Hands down Ice-Glacier, a nice stripped down and very quick version of stock.
Sense = either eVil D's Desire HD or Desire Z ports or Gr8Gorilla's Desire HD port. all 3 are very stable and quick and have many, many more "stock" HTC apps/widgets than Espresso. (personally I use Gorilla's as my daily driver with tiger13's Gorilla Red Theme).
they are very nice and stable ROMs and if I remember correctly they all come with atleast a mild Over Clock Kernel.
Edit : I forgot about MIUI, it's kinda like a blend of AOSP and iOS. some people really like it but personally it's not for me. if you decide to try out MIUI, eVil D has a really nice stable one.
last few nightlies for CM7 have been pretty damn stable.

I didn't include CM7 in the breakdown I gave him due to the fact I haven't personally used it. but I have heard that it is pretty stable, I just don't know from first hand experience.
If you're looking to have good battery life I would stay away from Sense. I really noticed a difference when I went from Evil 4G's Desire HD rom to CM7. Really makes a big difference.
I personally am a HUGE fan of Cyanogen's ROMS, they are fast. quick and have GREAT battery life. I beat up on my phone all day long and i can last 1 1/2 days on a single charge.
as far as CM7 v. CM6, CM6 is more "official" being that they do have an official channel log and support group for it. But CM7 is extremely stable. I've been using it as my DD for a few weeks now.
Like the OP, I'd like a cleaner, faster ROM but...... I'd like to keep Sense and I HAVE to have WiFi calling! Is there any MyTouch 4G ROM other than stock that will allow me to retain WiFi calling?

I know what ya mean about WiFi calling a must, I live in a valley and have **** signal at the house.
Ice-Glacier, eVil D's Desire HD port (I believe his Desire Z port does also), and Gorilla's Desire HD port. the 2 DHD ports are ALOT smoother and lighter on your memory due to not having TMO's Espresso overlay on top of HTC Sense. personally I use the Gorilla DHD port.
I use exactly what RavenWulf has in his sig; it is quite fantastic, everything is silky smooth and, this being my first Android device, I found the addition of more customization options in the stock sense UI awesome!
My wife runs stock (soon Iced Glacier once I can pry it out of her hands!) and with the same kernel as me (faux123 v0.2.2); no complaints from her end on that.
CM6.1........

CM7 alsi has wi-fi calling.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using Tapatalk
I've had great experiences with both cyanogen and I've basically flashed every rom avaliable for the mytouch 4g. Cyanogenmod 7 was by far the fastest for both gaming and productivity but felt a little bit unstable at times. Im now using miui and really like it.
CM7 is working fine for me... well you can always go with CM6
I just did CM7 yesterday, was running stock. CM7 nightlies rock. Couple of minor problems here and there (rebooted twice on me for no apparent reason). But it boots so fast, I don't really care. The benefits outweigh the problems.
I was going to do Iced Glacier, but it looks like development on it has ended as of a few days ago.

how is ur battery life with miui?
MIUI = fast + stable + awesomeness
Currently running CM7 which has the same formula.
so what would be best for someone that doesnt care about sense.........
Hey all!
So I've been with my NAM(Bell) Desire-Z for a few months now.
I've a fresh new 1800mAH battery and I wanna get the most out of it.
From what I've noticed, I don't really need any of the HTC widgets. I'm bound to find better replacements even if I do.
(Widgetsoid is an amazing widget alternative)
So I ask... do you think SuperVillainZ or maybe Virtuous might be better for me to try out if:
- I want better battery life
- I want a more responsive UI
- I want to stick with SenseUI without the bog-down effect
- I want to keep the SenseUI camera
- I like the SenseUI mail app.
??
Here's what I am hoping to get at as well....
-replace the HTC People app with the stock Google Contacts app
(HTC People + sync is driving me insane)
-replace the HTC dialer with "Dialer One" (an amazing Dialer replacement)
-retain 7 homescreens
-get wifi calling
-No huge need for overclocking, but definitely underclocking to save battery
-openVPN <-- i need this
I don't mind using a different UI/Launcher and I'm not pushing for 2.3,but it would be nice of course.
I'm using a bell desire z on rogers myself, I would suggest cm 6.1.1 for battery life as I ran it for a week and got rediculously good battery life on stock battery. I'm currently running cm7 nightly and have no complaints, battery isn't as good as 6 was but its still better than stock. as for all your extras your looking for I can't comment too much on as I'm still new to the desire z as well as cm. my main reason for suggesting cm is not only the customizability of it but I got sick of sense. yes it looks nice and its semi cool, but I find cm to be cleaner and less "busy". and adw ex let's me setup my homescreens just right.
sorry I can't help on the sense referral your looking for...just my .02 though and welcome to the desire z/g2 family

Same here i got a Bell Desire Z and the Battery life was Horrible ~ 12 hours max Sense.com, facebook were killing me.
Try MIUI its really smooth like a iphones but you might not like it as its like an new OS almost.
CM 7 RC would be best choice on cm7 nightly builds i got 24 hours with 2-3 hours use which is a lot coming from sense.
I would say Cyan Rc1 its really nice and stable
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
id recommend cm7 rc1 with flippys 1.8Ghz kernel.
I am running it at 1.4 and getting a really good battery life.(better than stock cm7)
but if you must have htc stuff id recommend virtouos rom.
Hmm... the only thing I really need from Sense is the camera/camcorder. Is it included in Virtuous? SuperVillainZ? other?
I too was thinking of going to CM7 RC1 because i think sense is one of the big reasons my battery is so poor because of all the things in the background, i was wondering though if i would be able to take the HTC touch input and camera from virtuous say and install them on CM7? And how good is the copy paste in gingerbread?
I just like the few little UI things in sense, only reason ive stayed with it
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
I would try CM 6.1.1. I've been using it for about a month now and it's great. I've tried Virtuous 0.9.5 and come to the conclusion that Sense is just not for me. Way too busy, and the launcher/home just isn't customizable enough.
I tried CM 7.0 RC1 for a couple days, but was getting choppy performance switching between screens on LauncherPro. It was worse with ADW. Must be some performance tweaking that needs to take place on that ROM.
Unfortunatly htc apps will not work on any other rom unless the rom is based on htc sense . The only htc app that will work is flashlight . I am running cm7 just now but virtouos rom is very awesome. And it has a very good battery life .

Well I know what it is, best thing to ever have on my htc hero when I owned one. But now it seems like AOSP is almost non existant on here. I love AOSP, and I love sense. There both awesome IMO. in all honesty sense is much more functional than aosp, when choosing asop over sense, the tradeoffs are wayyy to much and this is coming from someone who who used to go hard with cyanogen, decks, and salvage.
im bact to sense now, nocturnals stock rom but rooted with all bloat removed. i forgot how fast and responsive my phone could be!
needless to say im happy to be back to sense
i keep sense and AOSP booted. I like the functionality and lightness of AOSP, but there are couple little things on sense that I like as well. Cameras, calendar, and weather primarily, but when I don't feel like charging my battery every 6 hours, I switch back to salvagemod or MIUI.

I hope by "functional" you mean out of the box. There is almost nothing you can do with Sense that you can't do with AOSP. It may require some tweaking to get it the way you want, but you can do anything you want with AOSP and, as a general rule, it is much faster than Sense.
I believe in the last couple week I have been through and checked out over a dozen ROMs. I love the speed of aosp roms but I keep coming back to sense because there are some functions and widgets I do like that I just cannot get. I normally get 24 hours on average for a single charge on any sense rom after playing with kernels and battery tweaks. Both are great. Just depends on my mood and how often I want change.

Nailed it! Sense 3.x is new but still hogs system memory and cpu. If I want a Sense ROM I go back to stock rooted ROMs. None of this 3.x stuff. I use LauncherPro+ anyway, so the eye "crack" is useless.

I go back an forth between Sense stock and DecksGB. I also like the stability with stock Sense ROMs, but hate the way it looks. I found that Deck got it right with his AOSP ROM.
I am sure AOSP ROMs will start showing up again once Ice Cream Sandwich makes its way out.

I agree..and I'll admit that sense has it's pros but it's so bland. Even the themes r stale. Not to knock on the hard work that the devs put in on all things sense, but customization goes right out the window... I've gone through all and will always stick with aosp. I use WL and launcherpro/golauncher and it's beautiful. My fone will never look like anyone else's.
nobody calls my EVO a fizzle and gets away with it!!
I keep MikG sense and
MIUI aosp NADROID on my SD card
I just get beeter battery life on aosp with tiamat sbc kernels.
But when i travel to a 4G city I nandroid to MikG
But it seems the choices have been whittled down since the gingerbread update.
Decks,salvage Zen,Cmod, and MIUI
MikG, Virus,Fresh,,synergy.

Hi
I'll like to know what custom ROM would be considered the best for DHD, what I'm particular about are the battery enhancement and enhancement in speed/performance. Would really love somn with a buttery smooth performance.
Thanks

It all depends on your personal taste.
Do you persé want sense, or is a AOSP ROM fine too?
Try some of them and decide after that.
Once you get the hang of flashing a ROM it's no big deal, and your DHD gives you a feeling of a new phone every time you change it!!!
Most ROM's give you a better batterylife than stock, look in the posts of your ROM of choice
And with a new ROM you can safely overclock for a buttery experience
Good luck
It depens on your preferences.
For sense based roms i like most RunnyDroid or Er3bus XL
For non sense give a try to MIUI or lastest CM nightly.
Regards.
Android revolution hd is best sense rom hands down. Cyanogen for stock Android and ice cold sandwich for stock ics

Its based on sense 3.5 (sensation XL) and the best rom i ever had on my DesireHD. 2 days battery life and smooth as a sgsII and it has all the Tweaks and mods that I need already installed (rcmix tweaks etc). I'll stay on it untill official ICS custom roms are coming.
i want to say

IMHO....Rcmix 4.0, Smartdroid and Energy are the best.
All work perfect and fast.

My personal advice would be to stick with any sense 3.5 rom for a while until official sense 4 rom is leaked and devs adapt that rom then you will have no reason to stay on sense 3.5...but for now all 3.5 roms are great so you can just pick any...and if you want to go minimalism then get: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1587249
