Hey guys/gals,
My name is Rick. Im an old guy that works as a teacher in a highschool. I dont have much experience and created a problem on my droid.
I have a rooted droid X running 2.2.1
I recently changed from APEX 1.3 to Liberty v.1.0 this was very smooth and I really like the versitility of the liberty Mod. The little I know about it. haha.
Problem started when my 16 gig SD card bacame full. I transferred it from my original Droid. so it was already half full. Before heading to the Patriots game I decided to delete some APKs. I was sure to delete the older one before new phone. haha.
Since then... Cant load into bootstrapper, rom manager will open but no access to bootloader, Titanium back up wont work, NO SUPER USER privilages...
I tried to re install all the above and nothing works. The phone is funtional. but not able to back up or get into backup.
How screwed am I?
Rick
Thank you in advance for any help you may offer.
Z4root.apk for SU. Hopefully you've got a nandroid backup. Flash back to apex or what ever backup you have. Clean up Titanium Backup with a new busybox. Backup apps Verify apps. Flash back to liberty. Restore apps. Of course there's always sbf so you're never really screwed...
DroidX x2, Droid2, Droid1, DInc, and LG Ally x2 makes for a big Verizon bill.
Bad droid, no Doughnut!
Things I would TRY. Can't say for sure they'd work, but worth a try:
Try to unroot/root again with z4.
Open titanium and click the problems button and let it update busybox.
Boot to stock recovery, wipe data, cache, reboot.
Try to unroot and reroot manually with the terminal emulator methods in this forum http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-x-hacks/99958-rooolers-guide-root-backup-roms-2-2-ota.html.
Try to update superuser.apk from the market.
Set up SDK on your pc and manually unroot/reroot with adb commands.
If all else fails, SBF, root and restore a backup (or just flash to Liberty and set up again).
One of those will work. I'm just curious, did you do a batch restore with Titanium?

I had a friend of mine help me install the new YouTube app on my Mesmerize. I want to do a full restore but since I have the new YouTube in the /system/app/ directory when I do a restore it's going to have the new version.
I'm very new to Android. I'm used to using RUU files to flash my old Windows Mobile phone. I have ADB but I'm extremely limited on how to use it. My phone is rooted using Z4root.
Please help! I'll be doing a full system backup when I finally get back to stock. A Stock RUU for this phone would be amazing! LOL
If this were the mesmerize forum I'd say get your hands on a stock rom, and copy the youtube .apk (and probably the .odex from it) to /system/app. If it weren't a system app I'd say outright delete it (with titanium) and reinstall from market.
Not trying to be a jerk, but let this be a lesson to others. Always backup your phone (preferably with CW recovery through Rom Manager) BEFORE you make _any_ changes to your phone that you don't know how to undo. You will thank yourself later!
I have zero awareness of what is available for fixing mesmerize phones.
Swyped w/ XDA App. When in doubt, mumble.
Oh, you're not being a jerk at all. I've learned a good lesson and was saved by someone who posted an Odin restore for this phone. So now I'm back up and running stock again. I'm new to Android so I had no idea that changing a system app would effect the system restore. Now I know!
Any help is appreciated, I'm still fairly new with Android, but trying to learn my way around.
When the OTA update for 2.2.1 came out, I decided to do a factory reset because I'm just picky like that, and I like to be fresh coming out of OTA updates. Prior to the factory reset, I was running stock 2.2, though I was rooted using the manual (D2) method through adb, I had bloat frozen with Titanium Backup, and I had Droid X Bootstrap installed.
I unfroze the bloat and did the 2.2.1 update prior to factory reset. I did not unroot prior to the OTA. After the OTA I did a factory reset. I expected the bootstrap to go as well. It didn't, and I noticed immediately because I was booting into its recovery every other reboot because I was no longer rooted.
I still had the superuser icon (ninja) in the app drawer, however was no longer rooted of course, so I loaded z4root and let it "unroot" me, and then let it root again, which fixed the Bootstrap recovery issue.
Here's my problem. Obviously the factory reset did not wipe everything because bootstrap was still trying to load. My phone is definitely more sluggish than it was prior to the factory reset. Different types of screen lag are very noticeable and the phone really lags later in the day if I don't reboot. I loaded less apps after the reset than I had prior to, but otherwise did nothing different. I want to try to remove the bootstrap too, as well as anything residual to try to figure this out, even if I do have to factory reset again, because it's definitely not stable the way it is. Is it possible to remove it, and how so?
I'm aware that this may not fix the problem, and to me it doesn't even make sense that it would, but I definitely feel something "off" here and for my own peace of mind I'd like to remove it at least for now just to see. I've done factory resets before and the phone always feels much snappier once it's back up and running. This time it's worse than when I started.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
You would have to flash a stock sbf. Correct me if I am wrong but I think that stands for system boot file. That should take care of everything. I am sure u can find the thread on the forum on how to do it. Just to mention I think that all the boot strap does is hijack your normal boot process by interrupting it allowing u access. It doesn't actually replace the boot process.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
Info on the bootstrapper can be found here:
http://www.koushikdutta.com/2010/08/droid-x-recovery.html
Basically it replaces the logwrapper.bin file which gets executed very early in the boot process. This allows bootstrapper to control the rest of the boot sequence.
To *just* remove bootstrapper, I think there is a backup of the original logwrapper executable stored in /system, so you could just replace the exploited version with the original.
However, if you are having issues, I would suggest you just go ahead and flash back to complete stock:
http://rootzwiki.com/index.php/Main-Page/Droid-X-Full-2.2-SBF.html
Make sure you are still on the 2.3.15 version before using this. Once you take the OTA (to 2.3.340) I don't think this SBF will work any longer.
So the sbf flash method wont work if u took the update?

The .340 update "upgrades" your bootloader to 30.04. I've read that the 2.3.15 SBF will not work with this bootloader.
There are some SBF files produced by Team Black Hat (at Leaked 2.3.320 and patch files to put you to 2.3.340), but I've not used them.
I think you can find more info on those at mydroidworld (or you can support TBH by buying their app in the marketplace and downloading direct from there)

I'm not sure what you mean?
Try uninstalling from Manage Applications and re-install?
Do you mean the DroidXBootstrapper UI or the logwrapper exploit?
I want to root my DX, can anyone show me how to do this? And what is the best software to get once it's rooted?
The easiest way is the z4root app. Last time I searched for it on the market it wasn't there. Google it I'm sure you'll find it easy. What are you wanting from your phone? Telling us that will help us point u to apps u can use.
Z4root
Here you go. Enjoy!!

Z4Root worked but 1 question
The install worked for my X with the new update from Verizon. I got it rooted but it will not allow me to remove unwanted software that Verizon wants on the phone - any ideas on how those can be removed?
use titanium backup. be careful uninstalling apps, as some need to be on the device. if you buy the pro version of titanium backup, you can freeze apps to see how uninstalling them will affect your phone.
z4 root works perfectly
I downloaded a apk installer and got z4root apk file online, I used the apk installer to install z4root and it worked perfectly. My phone was rooted prior to the update then I updated to 2.2.1 and used z4 to root again.

That was exactly that app I was searching for to clean up my phone. Thank you!
I am a long time Blackberry user realtively new to Android. I was very proficient with loading OSes fixing bricked Blackberries, etc, so I am now learning about rooting and working with my Droid X.
Before I try z4root, can anyone point me to a good resource about backing up/restoring my phone in case something goes wrong with the root process?
Are there any issues with z4root with the Droid X running the latest OTA update? (System version 2.3.340.MB810). A co-worker with the Droid X tried z4root, it appeared to have hung at the first step. After a battery pull, the phone started without issue, but I am leery about trying it on mine until I study up on the restoration process in case something does go wrong.
Thanks in advance.

I am no expert by any means but I just went through this process as my update was giving me trouble. I backed up my system with the clockwork recovery via DroidXbootstrap apk. Worked like a charm and I have a backup I can restore if things get crazy. I'm sure there will be others with more informative guidance but I wanted to share my success with the apps recommended here.
If you download z4root, install the app on the phone, then you MUST reboot the phone. Once you reboot, run the app then choose 'root.' It will go through the process of rooting and the phone will reboot automatically. Search in your app drawer for 'Super User' (it will be a skull with bones crossed). Search for and download 'Bootstapper' app either in the market or online (online is free). Install the app then reboot the phone. Once the phone has loaded run the app. Select 'bootstrap' and the super user permissions will appear. Make sure 'always' is checked and select allow. Next you need to download the app 'ROM Manager'. Install the app then select 'Flash Clockwork Mod Recovery'. Select your phone. Next click 'Backup Current ROM'. This will allow you to make a COMPLETE BACKUP of your phone exactly. I did this for my phone and had zero issues. Worked like a charm!

Thanks for the help. I have another quick question. I have downloaded the APK. I was reading a bit about APK Installers. Do I need to use this to install z4root or can I simply browse to the location of the APK in the file browser and install it from there?
EDIT: I follow your directions above and it worked great! Thanks for the help!
Hey guys, just sharing this with everyone. Maderschramm over at droidforums and droidxforums has packaged an update zip for 2.3.340. It can be used as an alternative to SBFing or to update you if you haven't already.
Install- Make a backup first
1. Download zip
2. Boot into clockwork recovery
3. Install zip from sd
4. Reboot
5. Activate phone
IMPORTANT
BE SURE TO REBOOT AFTER INSTALLING ZIP. DO NOT DO ANYTHING ELSE IN CLOCKWORK RECOVERY PRIOR TO REBOOT. YOU WILL BRICK.
You will lose root, but you will also still have all apps and contacts.
Read this thread prior to doing the install. There's some helpful tips from Maderschramm.

good find. I am going to download and store away for a rainy day ota update. I hate sbf and rsdlite. And although I appreciate all that the black hat does - having to do like 20 (exaggeration) installs in clock work makes me a little nervous.
so good on ya mate.
that's why after i SBF 2.3.320 i always go straight into Android recovery before booting up and Factory Reset there, then boot up. But i guess everybody has there own way of doing things.
Ya, this is an easy alternative to get everyone to a clean 2.3.340. If you're on 2.3.15, 2.3.320, or 2.3.340 this will definetly come in handy.
Wonderful. I just left a stock rom literally today and realized I lost corporate email access with Gummy. That is a deal-breaker and obviously I didn't research it well enough before doing it. I NEED to get back to stock regardless of how painful it is. So this will unroot me, just Z4 again afterwards I take it?
Correct it will unroot and remove bootstrap. So after rebooting then use z4 and grab bootstrap again.
Very nice, thank you! Hopefully I never need to use it!

Hopefully we wont need to use it, but at least we will feel better about doing this rather than an SBF.

Reasons for bricking:
Installing zip as an update.zip
Doing anything else in bootstrap after installing zip
Soft brick (factory reset will bring it back)
Thanks This has saved me more than once while working on cracking the bootloader
Hrmm I ran this directly from having Apex and it didnt like it. Seemed to not fully wipe the phone at all. Im guessing I didnt read something all the way. I simply went to clockwork and loaded the file and rebooted. When it came back my system was still intact, but everything was force closing.

It will update or bring you back to clean 2.3.340. You will lose root and bootstrap, but you will keep all apps and setup.

If you don't wipe data/cache prior to install then you will have the same setup and apps, only you will have lost root and bootstrap. If you want a clean start then wipe data/cache then install zip.
WOW Droid X saver
Man this saved my Droid X from sure bricking, thankyou very much uploader
I've had such great help in these forums (Nook specifically) I couldn't resist trying my luck in these (Droid X) forums as well.
So, I've searched for Clockworkmod threads but they are all (That I found or noticed) from back in August.
Plenty of info to be had on Titanium Backup.
So my question, is Titanium the backup/restore program of choice? I was hoping for an idiots guide to backup and restore (especially in the event of problems) but the guides are kind of sketchy on the restore part.
Titanium
Use titanium backup to backup and restore all your apps. Useful when trying out new roms, although without the paid version of titanium you will spend alot of time tapping through the installation screens as it goes through your apps. Titanium won't help you recover a broken system.
SBF
Use RSDLITE 4.9 with a .SBF file to perform what many call a "sbf". This is usually used to restore a phone back to stock, or to recover from a bad/corrupted operating system. If your phone is unbootable, this is your recovery option. SBF'ing your phone is not as scary as it sounds, just download the system restore file (.sbf), connect your phone via usb to your computer, and use RSDLITE 4.9 to flash the phone.
Nand backups / Clockwork recovery
Use clockworkmod to do a full backup of your phone. Think of it as a clone of your phone. Restore your phone by booting into clockwork recovery and instead of choosing "backup", use the "restore" command. It will then allow you to select one of the backups you have made with clockwork. Pretty easy stuff here.

Thank you, this is exactly what I was after. My only problem remains that I do not see any guides on how to go about downloading/installing/operating this program. I'll keep searching now that I know more about what I'm searching for. Thanks!
Search the market for "rom manager", it's free. Load it and tap "flash clockworkmod recovery".
You can use this app to reboot into recovery or by holding down the home and volume down buttons while pushing the power on button.
You can also download the DX bootstrapper from koushik's site, just google "koush bootstrap". Also free.

Woah there buddy.
I'm going to clarify this process a bit for you before you mess something up, if you don't mind.
Root your phone.
The simplest method is to search for Z4Root here in the forums...it's a .apk that roots your phone for you.
Now...
I assume you want a sweeeeeeeet rom, ya?
We can do that...
MY personal recommendation would be this...
Make sure you have at least 2-3 gigs free on your SD...it won't need to STAY that way...but during this process, it will.
Open your contacts.
Click the options button.
Backup your contacts to your SD card.
Now download Titanium from the market...
The free version works fine for 99% of what you need.
The only problem is (as mentioned) you have to manually click the "install" button for all 500098098098 of your apps when you restore...as opposed to just one button and letting it work for a few minutes.
Open Titanium and backup all of your apps+data.
Do you want Liberty 2.0? I personally use it and LOOOOOOVE it...but you currently have to pay $5.99 for it...a free version should be released soon.
If you do...just download liberty toolbox donate from the market.
It will install the rom for you! The option is under the "Rom Manager" part...
Make sure you select both options when installing....The "Backup" and "clear data" ones.
If you don't want liberty...read below...if you've chosen to pay the $5.99...skip down to the ****** below.
Download either DX bootstrap or Rom Manager.
Rom manager actually installs Clockwork...where bootstrap is simply a method of booting into clockwork via an application.
Either work fine.
Find the ROM you'd like to install and download the .zip
Put the zip on the root of your SD card.
Boot into clockwork.
(With DX bootstrap you click "bootstrap" and when it finishes click "reboot recovery")
Backup. (Camera button selects options, volume moves up and down, and power moves back a page)
Now Wipe Data/Factory Reset
Now...Wipe Data/Factory Reset
And again.
And again.
I usually do that 3-4 times just for extra security.
Now install zip from SD card.
Pick the "Choose Zip from SD card" option.
Find your rom's .zip
Click Reboot.
******
CONGRATULATIONS!
You're running a custom ROM!
Now...if you're contacts don't automatically start restoring...
You can choose the backup that you made from the options menu in your contacts.
Now...restore all apps+data with Titanium.
And you're back to where you were before the rom.
All your contacts...all your apps...
You may need to go back into your settings menu and change those back to your exact specifications.
Now...
If you don't like your rom...
You can boot into recovery again...
And restore to where you were previously with one click.
At this point after deciding I like the rom (I don't keep much free space on my SD)
I usually move my nandroid backup from before the rom to my computer...and delete it from my SD card...and then do another backup of my current (rom'd) setup.
I keep a copy of the titanium backup on my PC as well...and delete it from my SD card...there is no reason to waste a gig of space that can easily be transferred back when needed.
My recommendation is to always have you're most recent nandroid backup on your SD card and a copy of your last few on your computer.
You can rename the backup folders for organization...but don't use any spaces or special characters.
If you're REALLY hurting for space...
You can delete the nandroid backup safely if you have a microSD reader on your computer...in the case that your phone doesn't work and need to transfer the backup back onto your SD card.
Happy modding!
Thanks for the info, all of which answered my question just right. I've been using Gingerbread rooted & deoxed since Friday and it is quite nice. The improved battery life is phenomenal!
I want to STRONGLY recommend that everyone who is new/does not know what they are doing actually go through the process of flashing the rom. I was inexperienced once and I hard bricked it (unfixable). No one needs to go through that and anyway that's what keeps our bootloaders locked.
INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT STEPS
If you do not wipe data/cache/dalvik cache/battery stats, you will bootloop. Repeatedly wiping is not at all necessary but its good for ocd.
If you do not mount system and data, your phone WILL NOT BOOT and you will have to sbf.
SBF'ing is not difficult but a pain in the ass. First of all you do not need version 4.9. I used 4.7 three days ago to flash the most recent system version. Make sure that you have the file for your bootloader version or again your phone WILL NOT BOOT.
That being said, I have found that all problems are almost always careless mistakes or at least mine have been
You will find that as long as you're careful and follow all instructions, you'll never have any problems
Ok. Great info. I have been reading through the stickies n then came across this.
I am currently running darkslide 4.2 with blur. Flashed using clockwork mod on DX rooted with z4. I know that's alot of acronyms but yall understand. I used the bootstrap to get to clockwork and load everything using astro file manager.
Here is the question.
Do I have to wipe my cache in clockwork or can I leave it? So far I have left it n its running fine but doesn't seem any faster and my battery runs down in about a day.
I also use Titanium to back up my stuff but do I ha e to back up everything manually or is the free version one touch good enough? I noticed there are alot of things not backed up in to do list. I will happily get the donate version if its recommended.
Thank you all for your time and effort to answer our beginner questions.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
Glad to see you are making progress, jperro. It never hurts (in my experience) to wipe the cache.
The paid version of Titanium backup lets you perform batch operations without interacting with every single install screen. There are other features that make it good, but thats the main one that saves you time/frustration.
I only back up a few system apps/data like Contacts Storage and Wifi Hotspots Storage. If I'm restoring my phone, chances are I'm either trying a new rom and I don't really want to muck it up with any old data - so I don't back up all the system apps/data that Titanium Backup shows as "not backed up". Besides, I've got nand backups in case I'm flashing back to a previous setup, so restoring system data or apps via Titanium seems redundant.
Ahhh. Ok. Thanks jeftep for the info. Very useful and informative.
