Seith Weintraub over at Fortune Magazine published a really great article today in response to Apple Fan Boy MG Siegler’s article about IOS updates. Now of course most of you know even though Mr. Paris Lemon is a deep mac boy we have a overall Tech Crunch Fans. However, MG or (Lemon if that’s what you prefer to call him) said that 90% of IOS users were on the most updated version of IOS and Android users, aboud .4% had a chance of being on the latest version. Seth, quick to help us out, pointed out that 90% of Android users are on 2.XX while 52% are on 2.2, yes we know that 2.3 is out now.
Everyone is also very aware of all the name calling, insult throwing, accusations and blowback Samsung is receiving because they are holding back an Android 2.2 upgrade on all 4 US major carrier Galaxy S devices just because they have the Samsung Vibrant 4G coming out in a few weeks on T-Mobile. That’s right the Verizon Fascinate, the Sprint Epic 4G and the AT&T Captivate are all being held back simply because of the T-Mobile device.. right? OF COURSE NOT!
Most of the other Galaxy S variants in every other country in the world have already received an upgrade to 2.2 via KIES or by way of an OTA through their carrier. The first thing we need to know in America is that Kies is not readily available to us. This is by way of the CARRIER and not Samsung.
The second thing you need to take into consideration, kind of like Android as a whole, is that a lot of the Samsung Galaxy S’ were acutally sold OUTSIDE of the United States. So to me the logic that Samsung only cares about the bottom line can be debated by the argument than why did all the other countries get the update quicker.
Hopefully you’re following me so far and the rest of this will just end up pissing people off.
- Many of the people whining about Samsung updates and bashing Samsung in general don’t own a Samsung phone. Or don’t use one on a regular basis. Remeber according to Andy Ruben we are activating 300,000 Android devices per day. A lot of those are for normal consumer people. The bulk of the readers of the tech blog readers, writers and community aren’t normal “consumers”. The normal consumers get upset when they start hearing about these updates through their tech savvy friends and then feel slighted.
- Most of the Samsung Galaxy S variants came with Android 2.1 in a modified form with touchwiz on top, couple that with the hardware (superAMOLED screen, 1ghz hummingbird processor) etc and the proprietary social hub, media hub etc, that actual normal consumers are taking advantage of you still have a pretty darn good, up to date device. We aren’t talking Sony Xperia here that released with 1.6 we’re talking about a version of 2.1 that was fancy schmancy at the time. Add to that the fact that both the Fascinate and the Epic 4G included Mobile Hotspot (one of the key features from 2.2) and what out of this world, oh my god my phone is so outdated, feature are the general public Samsung customers missing?
- The next thing we have to realize is the way America works. There is a lot more bureacracy from the government and carrier politics from our wireless carriers than most other countries. There is a lot of red tape for everything that happens in the wireless industry on the carrier/manufacturer side than any other country in the world. Take kies for instance if America had access to kies everyone with a Samsung Galaxy S phone would be upgraded.
Now take your active Android Evangelists, ones with a passionate heart and a vested interest in Android who actually own a Samsung Galaxy S phone. Your @theandroidgirl and @raywalters for instance, these people, among countless others who are on twitter and podcasts and were big enough believers to purchase a Samsung Galaxy S variant, and who may have partially based their decision on the fact that Samsung did say (at least at IFA) that we would see Froyo by the end of 2010, these people have legitimate complaints to the source.
Of course its also very disheartening that Samsung obviously has the source code for 2.3 as it’s running on the Nexus S today. And Gingerbread is a whole different issue.
For our followers on Samsung Galaxy S US Variants, we feel for you but have a challenge:
In the comments below, tell us what you are looking for out of Froyo that you aren’t getting out of the modified version of 2.1 that’s on your Galaxy S now?
Why should you do this? Take a trip over to samsung.com and you will see that thedroidguy is one of the twitter accounts featured on Samsung’s website. Trust me comments here will be seen by people that matter at Samsung. And for the record, even as someone who genuinely suports Samsung, we are very disappointed in this whole Samsung upgrade mess and definitely feel let down that US users didnt get a Froyo update in 2010. And also for the record as far as the phones I am currently using, my 1st use phone is a Droid Pro, 2nd is a Samsung Nexus S and 3rd is an HTC Desire.

Also, how about Samsung's own docks that require 2.2 in order to use certain functions.

+1. .
Mostly the 2.2 apps like Chrome to Phone, GPS fix, and apps to SD Card.
Almost forgot Flash, that's a pretty big one. I honestly don't care about 2.3 all that much.

The source of 2.2 for the Epic. Then we will have some great roms.
Also:
Jit and other speed enhancements
Support for the latest apps
Touchwiz 3
I want the hardware keyboard to keep up with my typing. The reason I bought the phone over the EVO was the slideout keyboard. I use it but find myself hitting the backspace far too often because a letter was missed.
Flash is a nice addition as well.

My question to any qualified attorney and in general is at what point does the failure to meet an annouced release date become false advertisment particularly when said annoucement is just as advertisement material to coerce comsumers into purchasing one product over another one?

Samsung listed on their twitter that they should be sending out Froyo towards the end of September, Not too bad, max a 2 months after the phone comes out for a decent update... go go Samsung.

Cool. Now I hope they stay on top of other updates in the future. And fix the GPS issue, obviously.
hopefully with all that time, they will have a good packaged update with minimal issues!

considering the evo4g has been out for over a month and a half, its just getting it in august, granted yes its the first week of august but its gonna take a full month and a half to roll it out. its gonna be screaming fast on our vibrants as soon as we get it though. be patient, its gonna be awesome

There are a lot of reasons why these things get delayed. True, Google released 2.2 a few months ago and Nexus users already have it, but you have to realize that the N1 is a reference device and was meant to be used to show off what Android can do. Of course it will get updates first, because it's what Google uses to build off of.
Once Google releases the code, there are two more layers before going to the consumers - the phone manufacturer, and the mobile provider. Samsung has to deal with each of the mobile providers to make sure that their version has what they want included and that it's all working properly. Corporate bureaucracy is not a quick and smooth path to travel down - they probably have four hour meetings to discuss what color the worthless "MobiTV" icon should be.
I work in research for consumer goods so trust me when I say that manufacturers don't cater to consumers like us on these forums. While they certainly take us into consideration, they want to maximize reach and, thus, have to work with the lowest common denominator - John Q. Public. Why do you think the iPhone is so popular? It's pretty and it's easy to use.
Would you prefer Samsung blast out updates that don't work properly and spend all day on these forums looking for "fixes" for your issues, or that they get it (mostly) right the first time?
Samsung and T-mobile don't want to risk pissing off one-million people so that one hundred people get their Froyo early.

There are real reasons why HTC, Moto, and Samsung don't have updates immediately. The Nexus One runs a naked version of Froyo. As in, no extra customizations. As it should be for a reference device.
Love it or hate it, HTC, Moto, and Samsung used customized version of Android. HTC Sense, Moto Blur, and Touchwiz. These require extra testing. If you look at the test build for the Galaxy S that's available, Touchwiz hasn't just been ported to 2.2. Samsung has made some real and significant' improvements which require fine tuning.
I've noticed the following from screenshots and impressions:
1. A rotation lock button is now part of the Touchwiz notification bar. A HUGE plus IMO.
2. New select/copy/paste menu in the browser. Another big plus
3. Tweaked video player UI which from all accounts is a nice improvement.
4. Backlight adjustment by sliding your finger on the notification bar has been disabled/removed. A good move considering the amount of complaints I've seen about accidental adjustments when not using the auto backlight feature
5. Reworked settings menu for easier access.
6. I haven't seen it, but hopefully a voice-to-text button on the next version of SWYPE
All these enhancements are all proprietary to Samsung an require additional testing.
I'd rather they release a stable, fast build than to rush the release and face the kinds of bugs people are already complaining about. If you have no patience, feel free to swap your device for a Nexus One, HTC, or Motorola. I for one and excited they've kept their promise and is releasing the update in a respectable time frame. Not to mention no phone can replace the Super AMOLED goodness on this phone.
Also don't forget that HTC has much more experience with building and releasing custom interfaces. From what I've seen, Motoblur doesn't seem as refined or comprehensive as the enhancements from Touchwiz. Samsung is new to the Android game and has done as respectable job learning from their mistakes with the Behold II.
Just my 2 cents.

I completely agree with you, yes CM6 will be fantastic, but i believe that a Smart Phone such as our vibrant should be able to get everything out of it without being rooted, and i truly believe that 2.2 and all of Samsung's enhancements will allow this to happen. As long as T-Mobile doesnt choose to take out key features such as hotspot tethering, everything will be fantastinc. and thats my 2 cents.

Since a new thread seams to pop up every day asking for ETA's I suppose we can have a thread specifically discussing what we ACTUALLY know. Here is what "I" know at the moment.
GPS Fix
Currently there is a leaked firmware (see development forum) that looks like it improves the GPS functionality nicely. This has a build date of Sept 7th so it is fairly new. Due to certain issues, this appears to be a beta still. However, it does have the TMO apps on it so it is further along than a pre-carrier build. Given a beta cycle of a couple of weeks, if this goes out as an OTA, it would look to be at the end of the month at best.
It has been reported in another thread that TMO will start rolling out a GPS/Lag fix on Sept 20th. This is most likely based on, or is, the leaked ROM that you can find in the dev section. So far, reports on the GPS fix are "mostly" positive.
Froyo (Android 2.2.)
There have been no leaked ROMs for the Vibrant yet although there is for international versions. Samsung_mobile on twitter said Froyo at the end of September. Given the information in the previous section, it seems an interim build may be coming to TMO first, before a Froyo is pushed out. This one though is a complete unknown besides from that twitter post.
It is currently expected that Samsung will release a Froyo build TO CARRIERS on Sept 23rd. We are not likely to see a Froyo update for at least 45 days after that if not longer depending on how long it takes TMO to "wiz it up"
GPS is working very nicely for me on that new rom with no issues.
I was locking onto 6 birds yesterday. All stock. WHATUP NOW
Still take some froyo though haaa

Yeah, if we are lucky, we may get it by the time Google releases Android 3.0 in October....
I am sooo disappointed that every Android manufacturer locks down their product so tight, that without their cooperation, the phones are simply not upgradable to the new OS versions. In a way it's worse than dealing with the iPhone
Wake up dude. It has nothing to do with that and EVERYTHING to do with testing and finishing drivers, UI, etc. People complain about a buggy release then demand updates right away. Its not going to happen.

Nope.
Samsung can test the OS in advance, so they can get their drivers ready for launch. Both HTC and Moto did it, and Moto is hardly the most responsive company out there.
And the UI, it's crap, IMO. But if Samsung thinks TouchWiz is so great and important, then spin it off and make it available in Market, when ready.
There is really no good excuse for the delay. Samsung is just not dedicating the resources they need to.

In T-mobile/Samsung's defense...
When the first update for the G1 came out, it released in the UK before it hit the U.S.
Turns out that there was some kind of security bug in it, and they actually had to stop offering the update.
The testing aspect is why these updates take so long. It takes longer to test (and fix minor issues) than to correct the main problem.
What it boils down to is that no one really knows these devices in and out. You have cameras from one company, radios from another company, GPS chipsets from a third company, processors from a 4th, etc... and on top of it all your OS is written by a company that is very new to the electronics business.
The problem is the pace of technology.... sure you could pay 2 or 3 geniuses $100,000 a year for 2 years to learn every idiosyncrasy of ONE of your devices... but does that make sense when you have 2 or 3 new models going to market in 6 months?
Apple is probably the best suited company to have a team of experts who know their ONE device in and out... and even they screw it up (proximity sensor, antenna debacle).

Actually, part of what I do is pay people to do software development.
Again, if this was a priority for Samsung, we would have 2.2 now. They have control over more hardware in the Galaxy than most other phone manufacturers.

If HTC and Moto could do it, so could have Samsung. Especially since the Galaxy S is supposed to be their weapon with which to take over the smart phone market.... And since they have more control over key components than their rivals.
Anyway, what's your point? That writing drivers is so tough it takes years?
Or that we should not expect much from Samsung products, because they are a diversified company and can't focus on any particular product?

Ha, no. I'm OS and hardware agnostic across all platforms.
My point is realistic expectations. If the GPS update was top priority for Samsung and/or easy to fix (it very well may not have been), it would be done.
As the owner of a company, you know more than anybody the tradeoff's that need to be made when making business decisions. It easy to complain when you are individually impacted about the priority of some specific piece of work, but for Samsung you know they made concious decisions about release scheduling.
Given recent news, it looks like the GPS/hardware fix is being release seperately from 2.2. I'm a little dissapointed in this, it's seems likely that means we will not get the 2.2 fix before the end of September. Ideally they would be rolled together if 2.2 was close... unless the fix just took so long the release timeframes have been squeezed together. And all assuming the GPS fix is merged with 2.2.
Anyway, I'm rambling, no way to know unless we sit in on Samsung development meetings and what challenges they have had with the 2.2 release.
My 'guess' is Samsung had marketing dates to meet with the original OS and released the product before everything was baked in. There are lots of oddities and bugs in the phone I have not seen in other platforms (like HTC), and these are hopefully fixed and may explain the extra time.
I agree with you re: the UI. For those that care, and it likely the more technically savy are the ones that care, it's easy to change... one of the compelling things about any android device.
The Tab is nearly ready to launch. I'm sure it has been tested with 2.2 for a number of weeks, if not months. The have the drivers ready. They are likely devoting tine and energy to hardware releases at this time. It would be nice if they would release vanilla android then the other stuff in the market. They already do that for the samsung home and car apps.
It is really frustrating that these companies cripple good devices with bloatware and make you root to uninstall it. Gingerbread will be nice because all of these extras will be apps. Which is how it should have been from day one.

Ok I know that its bad to jump to conclusions on this but I was listening to a recent podcast on Engadget where they were talking about Samsung devices. I saw it on their site and I knew I just had to listen having a Vibrant. I was enjoying their bashing about on things and then they mentioned that a Samsung rep told them that they think of 2.2 as a marketing gimmick. I'm sure that's just some guy who doesn't understand what 2.2 or 2.3 do for our phones.
But what do you think about that? I mean looking at how long it takes to get updates for the phone, does a part of you believe that this maybe true?
What's your thoughts?
hmm i can't post the link since i read more than i post but it's on engadget's site and here's the rest of the URL after .com
/2010/11/13/engadget-podcast-219-11-13-2010/
At about 00:17:25 of the podcast.
it doesn't really matter we get 2.2 or 2.3(your dream only) or not. It only matters they sell it more or even more.
Well, I can almost guarantee that the Froyo update is gonna be held until after the holiday season. T-Mobile is as guilty as Samsung for this. They think that people will opt for the newer phones with 2.2 and don't want their sales diminished by having it available on older handsets.
Personally, I don't think the average consumer cares that much. Only people like us and similar communities keep on top of what each version does better than it's predecessor.
In the end, you're far better off flashing one of the ROMs here anyway. I've got buddies at work still kickin' it with the G1 due to it's versatility. Why would I want the 2.2 update from T-mobile? Crappy TouchWiz, bloatware and all that nastiness. Only thing I can see it useful for is if I wanted to send in the phone for warranty work.
+1 im on the onyx rom right now and tell you the truth the only thing i want an official 2.2 froyo from tmobile would be to iron out the very lil tiny things thats wrong on this rom other than that i can care less ..
as for gingerbread 2.3 im pretty sure we will have it due to the amazing work of people like som, viral, eugene, and master.

Well, considering that a Vibrant Froyo ROM already leaked, either that Samsung Rep is full of crap (likely), or Engadget staff is (even MORE likely).

If that were the case, ATT, Sprint, and Verizon would all have released Froyo for their GalaxyS devices. So yeah, I pin the blame on Samsung...
I do find it hard to believe that t-mobile is to blame here considering the other galaxy s devices that have yet to implement as well.
And yes it's true a rom here would be a lot better. Not to say that an official rom would be terrible. All roms have bugs, but you would think by now that samsung would want the best for their consumers. Even if they don't know what 2.2 is. Oh and if you were wondering, yes I'm still on the stock rom. I'm just not ready to redo all my settings on my phone when I update to a new rom.

Yeah, I am frustrated with the Samsung heading into Android as well.
They marketed Galaxy S as a such a great phone (which it is) with the ability to upgrade it to the latest (at the time of the launch) OS within months, yet they have released new hardware - Galaxy Tab - with 2.2, and keep the Galaxy S phone users out dry - thanks to these boards I do not have to rely on them, but I did void the warranty by rooting my device and installing the custom ROM. And now they are already marketing Gingerbread platform that will ultimately become second Google dev phone, and again let everyone dry on a Galaxy S phone market.
I do want to get the real Google phone, and knowing that I don't have to rely on the carriers to release the update for me, but seeing how it will be a Samsung device makes me uneasy.

Plug in a set of headphones or an AUX cable to a stereo with no microphone built in and make a call. You'll find something wrong then.
Oh yeah, do you have an external SD card bigger than 2gb? If so, try copying more than 2gb of data to it.

Nope, because it is in the hands of Samsung.
Google release the OS to the manufacturers and carriers, and it trickledowns from there.
The exception Nexus One, since it is a Google phone made by HTC.

According to T-Mobile, Google is the one that pushed out the 2.2 OTA for the myTouch3g 1.0.
Google can't push out updates for phones like the Vibrant, Droid X, HTC Evo, etc. because of TouchWiz, Motoblur and Sense. Google has absolutely no way to update those manufacturer customizations, they can only push stock android to devices.

You're talking about a plain old set of headphones that DO NOT have a mic built in? Or an AUX cable to a stereo (again, with NO MIC)? And you get call audio through the headphones and use the phone's built-in mic?
That's funny, because if so, you're the only one that it works for.
Remember: NO MIC BUILT INTO THE HEADPHONES.

Yeah, you won't see any problems if you use an inline mic, or a headset w/mic. I have a plain, no mic AUX cable to my car stereo - I listen to music, and when a call comes in I answer it and call audio comes through my car speakers and I talk using the phone's built-in mic.
As for the SD, yeah, I tried re-mounting it on the phone, and even formatting it on the phone too, but nothing fixed the fact that it was only showing up as a 2.2gb drive in Windows' Device Manager.
The galaxy s is a fine device with really good hardware.. and I really don't have a big of an urge to have froyo, though it would be nice if i could have it on my phone.. but i think samsung is just behind in other aspects knowing that the mobile industry is very highly competitive... from a business perspective, samsung may be all about their sales and profit while ignoring oring their customers' complaints and needs... it's pretty obvious that majority of smarphone users are not power users, nor do they even know what the android os is, but still, samsung must deliver and execute an effective strategy that can refrain the power users from considering another brand.. htc and motorola are doing well in supporting their devices, samsung must do the same if they want to remain in the competition..
what i dont understand is.. what is preventing them from releasing an update that the end-users yearn for when the tab is already on 2.2 and Europe has it too.. oh, it must the customizations from different carriers that is hindering and prolonging the said update.. ughh..
I wonder what our xda devs think, I feel like many of the awesome devs here couldve led a team to get froyo on the Vibrant and had it done long, long ago. Then again I know nothing about development so I'd be interested to read what the more experienced devs think, is it reasonable for it to take this long in the hands of skilled devs? Or does it seem like an incapable personnel problem at Samsung?
Anyway, i would think Sam would want to release it before xmas because after tethering, flash, more ram, all kinds of improvements its like a whole new generation of SGS it gives them a whole new advertising campaign. At least thats how I see it, when i got froyo for my nexus it was like getting a whole new phone.
Maybe people who dont know better will not miss 2.2, but considering its massive popularity, eventually the very ubiquitous SGS is going to be so far behind that it will become prominent news and even novice Android owners are going to take Samsung's inability to update into account when it comes time to replace their SGS. Surely Samsung realizes this.
Personaly I absolutely love their hardware, Ive had three HTC Androids and this one Samsung and its my favorite hardware, but Samsung is now at least below HTC and Moto when I look for my next phone, updates are way more important than Samsung wants them to be.
So what do u want to see on the next galaxy s2 phone?

I don't think sammy is the blame for software support on this phone. To me it seams they have tried but tmobile has gotten in the way. The phone has had a couple updates already granted they were relatively minor but they addressed major issues that people complained about. Bettter modems for better signal for one. They released an app to fix the gps. Which has worked for me multiple times(if it haven't for you have you tried deleting gps data first).
They have tried to release updates on their own through mini kies that tmobile told people not to use. There seams to always be a release on samsungfirmwares.com that isn't a final but provides parts needed for custom roms. They made the phone rediculously easy to mod even provided a way to fix your phone if you brick it. And it doesn't void your warranty if you take it apart because there isn't any warranty stickers.
What more do you want from them? They have tried to support the community the best they can without Tmobile interferance. They have to go through testing before they release to the public but to me it looks like they are trying.
That said I bet the sgs 2's, will be almost identical hardware wise on all the networks. Because I bet all of these very different variations of the same phone is giving them the flux.

@ fuman lack of support and getting froyo are too separate things. They are supporting the device. Besides you don't know the politics behind their agreement with google. They may not have as large of a team as htc or Motorola has on developement, they might have a contract with the networks not to release it. Maybe they ding get as much support from google that htc or moto has. There is a loft of things that can be holding them up, but support we do have. Look at how long it took other devices took to get cupcake after it came out.

How long do you think it takes to design and release a phone? If we don't start giving our input early then it will be too late for them to even implement our ideas.

I disagree, I think OS updates are equivalent to continued support for the device, and the GPS fixes have been hit or miss for people so there are still major issues that are unresolved. I can understand Samsung not having the development or experience with Android that Motorola and HTC have, but I haven't seen anything that would put the blame on T-Mobile more so then Samsung. I don't really put any blame on T-Mobile for anything Vibrant related at the moment.

lol Facebook just updated the Facebook app on android today and it's good. haha it answered my wishlist.
Quad core, 2GB ram, 5 inch MEGASUPERAMOLED display, bluray optical drive, and IceCream (after honeycomb?) OS.
Seriously though. I'd want: No lag, fully functioning GPS, Xenon flash, top unlock button, dedicated camera button, micro usb port on the side next to an HDMI out, 3.5mm on top, more dedicated memory onboard 768MB or 1GB, slightly faster cpu (current cpu is super fast) and a less plasticky finish (more HTC like). I think most of those changes would be easy to implement. I think I basically listed every feature in most upcoming android "super phones".
Support and kept promises from Samsung... that's it. It is what I thought I was buying in the first place.

None of what you said makes sene.
Android is a tech geek-heavy community (the fanbois, at least).
Samsung has the hardware to differentiate itself outside of defacing android.
If they would have just released a Stock Android phone with their hardware, and ensured a fast update turnaround, they probably would have sold more phones than they did.
And they would not have needed such a large software development team.
Galaxy S phones becasue of the hardware, not because of the software, and many people would not have brought them in the US if they had known the update would have taken so ****ing long to materialize. Samsung was talking about updating to FroYo before the Euro Galaxy S was even launched (at their event).
They should be embarassed. Probably the biggest let down of 2010.
Also, an Android phone doesn't need 768 MB RAM. 512 is fine. The issue is our phones don't have 512 RAM accessible to applications to begin with. It has about as much App-Accessible RAM as a cheap mid-ranged Android device...
That being said, unless I pony up for a WP7 device, I'm getting a new notebook (not a netbook, a notebook). I'm not seeing how these phones are worth what they sell for. Unlike computers, a bad phone purchase is hardly salvageable...
Designing a phone isn't as monumental as some make it out to be, unless the manufacturer is just starting out. Much of the groundwork has been done by them in the past and they can simply make new phones by differing in the chasis if possible, and very few components... How do you tihnk Samsung managed 4 different Galaxy S phones for every carrier here? It certainly didn't take them a year or more to branch them out from the i9k, that's for sure...

If google really wants to stick it to the carriers, they should release the source code straight to developers at XDA and other sites so as to by pass carriers and reward the users who work to improve the OS for free. If the carriers don't want to play ball, leave them on the bench.

This is totally wrong. FTA:
"Google has also tried to hold up the release of Verizon (VZ) Android devices that make use of Microsoft's (MSFT) rival Bing search engine, according to two people familiar with the discussions."
The keyword is "devices." Google can't do anything whatsoever about devices that are already released -- at least, ones running Froyo or Gingerbread since both have already been released through AOSP. Honeycomb, that's a different story, and they can try to hold up new device releases through license negotiations -- but Samsung does not need to work with or go through Google at all to update pre-3.0 devices.
To put it another way, Google has nothing whatsoever to do with an existing device's upgrade from 2.1 to 2.2 or 2.3.

The point is to by pass carriers in an effort to convince them to stop mucking up code with unwanted bloat. With android taking hold of the market, who will carriers turn to if google refuses to give them code. Windows? No thanks. Apple is only interested in iphone. If cricket was the only carrier getting android and getting quick updates because they play nice with google, I think a lot of people would switch. A lot.

Because Verizon has extra "customization" on top of Samsung's "customization", and Verizon also has no motivation to make it a priority at all to release Froyo to us... why would they? They already have your money. The vast majority of users won't realize they're so far behind because they're not interested in such technical and political matters. The only people that will get upset are the tiny, tiny number of people on these forums... and I'd be surprised if the Fascinate was one of their top selling phones ("it's not a Droid!!!!"), so the Fascinate user base is likely fairly small compared to their other phones... and now they likely won't be selling it for much longer.
That makes far more sense than 'EVILOCITY!!!!!!!'. Sure, Verizon is still a jackass, but it's not a conspiracy to take over the world.

The fascinate was the last SGS variant to get launched in the US for major carriers and was also the most bloated with VZW crap ware, logically it will be the last to get the update. No need to dream up conspiracy theories.

Replacing Google search with Microsoft Bing on an android phone is so strange and wrong, its very possibly behind the problems getting froyo out. It's also the reason the fascinate wasn't a "Droid". So my original post still holds. Again, we're explaining why the verizon galaxy S is lagging all others.

Droid is branding that VZW pays royalties to obtain; they had contractual agreements with Motorola to release phones with Droid branding around the same time. The lack of exclusivity of the Fascinate renders it a poor investment under the Droid brand and thus was pimped out to MS for extra change. Your assumption holds no ground.

VZW also has Droid contracts for HTC, so I'm missing the point you are making about Motorola.
Samsung galaxy S phones outside VZW were updated long ago: Samsung alone is not the issue
VZW phones like Droid X were updated long ago: VZW alone is not the issue.
Hmmm, what could be different about the fascinate then? What could it be? Well, could it be... BING!

Read the post over again, I addressed your questions.
From some of the rumors I have read the Fascinate is not part of the droid line because Samsung has been adamant about building their own brand, the Galaxy S line. If one of their phones is going to be a Droid branded it won't be one from the Galaxy S line. Also, who cares if it runs Bing search. Bing is a usable search engine, really people, quit hating. Google is more then likely going to have to go to court to be forced play ball and let other other search providers integration in Android (like Bing, or Yahoo, or whoever). The problem with the update is either Verizon wants something included or fixed and Samsung sucks at coding. I know my next Verizon phone won't be a Samung, it will probably be the Droid X2 (if it is indeed Tegra 2 dual core and 1gb of Ram, with a qhd screen). I like the SAMOLED screens but Samsung's software support of their product is truly pathetic for such a large company. Even if they haven't released the update via Verizon, where is the workable source code? Its just sad.

If you're that upset about it, and so close minded that you think Bing is the sole reason that Froyo hasn't been released yet, go get a Droid phone.

Just getting the word out and fostering discussion. Pony up a superior theory or go home.
