im using sprite back up, and it keeps failing when i restore.
can anyone recommend something better?

SPB seems to work fine, provided you install it on the device and not the PC card. What is annoying is that there is no error message when you run it off the SD card, it just doesn't restore properly. It seems to work fine otherwise. I use it pretty much because I create a backup before installing software, then if I don't like it, I do a hard reset and restore from the backup, so I use it pretty often.
It has one other feature worth noting. If I need to roll back several days, I can install the settings from that time, then the files and calendar items from a more recent backup. That way, only settings changed in the last few days are lost.
I back up to the SD card but periodically, and manually, move the old backups to my PC. SPB automatically makes a backup every night (stored on the SD card) and keeps the most recent three nights' worth.
Still, I learned the hard way that it won't run off the SD card properly, and had to rebuild the device. (I did get files and PIM items, though.) The silver lining was that I used the opportunity to upgrade my ROM.

That happened to me,
Did you have the program installed on the SD card?
There was a bug, allegedly fixed now, that caused it to restart another backup after making a backup. This could be interrupted.
You might try version 1.5 that just came out, but others like Sprite. I didn't like Sprite because it had conniptions over the fact that I sync with two pcs.

i had to go it the hard way
just went ahead and Wiped my phone.
it was less painful than i though it'll be, it was within the calculated parameters of the process involved to get your device up to speed in record time in a massive failure
so once the phone booted back into the OS, the very first thing i did was to setup APN
then sign in to my gmail account, BAM! got all my pictures, phones, contacts, calendars, etc, every thing back
then next task was to install AppsBrain, hit sync and BAM! i got my list of 400+ apps to install back
now i'm clicking through about 800 times install, okay, continue LOL :r
and i'm rather surprise Android Market, and the OS hasn't crapped out on me yet with the massive deluge of files action
it's install faster than i though... only 200+ apps to go
and about 15+ more email / IM accounts to join back into the system, and reconfiguring 400 apps
the Titanium Backup backed up files got wiped out in the process
at least i'm getting a good vibe out of this, it means the upgrade to Froyo will be just the same
the phone is HOT of all the 3.5G activity
the actual 3 button reboot to Recovery Mode + Wipe data and reboot back took less than a minute.
chances of missing a call during this time is quite low
SMS will be downloaded as soon as your phone goes back into OS, so chances of missing out on an important SMS is very unlikely
another interesting i noticed is that the File System is not choking up as it did before the Hard Reset.
before i couldn't get more than 4 apps downloading/installing concurrently in parallel
right now i'm doing around 10 at a time, and it doesn't slow down.
what gives?

Installing more than 3 apps at the same moment.... it´s just a pain...
exactly, normally when you try to download and install 4 apps simultaneously it gets sooooooo slow, worse than a snail
but for some odd reason right now that is not happening, it's smooth download and install, i wonder that's the difference
recommend you buy/install mybackup pro.. you can reinstall a bunch of apps without it prompting you for each one... i think if you pay for titanium backup it does the same..
i frequently copy the appmanager (diff app i use) and titanium backup directoryies from internal to external sd so i have have a backup in case of a full reset ..
i also set mybackup pro to backup directly to external sd.
yeah, that was my problem i forgot to move a copy of titanium backup from internal SD to external SD
otherwise i'd not have had to go thorugh 800+ clicks to say OK to everything

well... after aprox 250+ apps/games installed the phone is going back to its old self slooooooooow when you try to install 2 or more apps concurrently.
and the list of Manage Apps takes a while to load up
so it seems like the sweet spot is to keep less than 200 apps on the phone to keep it running silky smooth

After reading you post, I move the Titanium Backups to SDcard
just so I don't forget. Now have to remember to update it.
I can't even imagine how you have 800 apps on your phone. I just counted and I have 21, and to me that is a lot, but perfect.
not 800 it's 400 but for each install you need 2 click
so that's 800 clicks
Can you do a write up on step by step how to wipe and reinstall the (JH2) ROM, kernal, modem etc for i9000M?
Have a replacement coming tomorrow, had a problem with it not taking a charge. I have several apps (some paid, some not), rooted (z4) and have LauncherPro (pretty sure email still has my license #?).
I rooted for wifi tethering but never deodexed or ran any custom roms so have never had a need to back up. What is the best way to back up everything the way I have it now (settings, apps, contacts, etc) so when I get my replacement I can root (z4 again I would assume) and reload my backup without having to manually chase it all down again?

Titanium backup seems to be the favorite, but it's annoying to use for me and not very intuitive.
I prefer My Backup Pro. You can backup to sdcard OR online. You can backup just the data or the app and the data, etc. Lots of features, and easy to use.
I prefer and use Titanium. I think it is really easy to use and does a great job. Worth the 5 or 6 bucks that it costs.
I use Titanium Backup PRO. It gets the job done.
I like titanium backup pro, works pretty well so far.
I also use Titanium Backup Pro. If you don't plan to run a different ROM, you will be able to restore everything with almost no pain.

Another vote for Titanium Backup Pro here. What's really nice about it is that it can "freeze" apps in addition to uninstalling them. So I froze all the bloatware apps so they don't run, but they're still on my phone. When Verizon releases an OS update, I unfreeze the apps before doing the OTA update so it's as close to stock as possible. After the OTA, I re-freeze them. Makes for a trouble-free update.
Another feature is that it integrates with Dropbox to back up your phone to the cloud, making it easier to restore to a different phone.
a vote for Droid X Bootstrapper Recovery
i've experienced a problem with the phone dialer and needed to do a number of backup/restore functions. The bootstrapper mentioned not only does a thorough job, but it has an advanced feature that lets you backup/restore separate portions of the phone.
hold on a sec, i'll boot it up and give you the list.
the main screen has a number of options:
- reboot system now
- apply sdcard:update.zip
- wipe data/factory reset
- wipe cache partition
- install zip from sdcard
- backup and restore
- mounts and storage
- advanced
the vol up/down keys are used to highlight an option, and the camera button is used to select it. when you choose backup and restore, you get 3 options:
- backup
- restore
- advanced restore
if you chose advanced restore, you are presented with a dated list of all the backups you've done with the utility. pick one, press the camera button and you get 5 options:
- Restore boot
- Restore system
- Restore data
- Restore cache
- Restore sd-ext.
I have done the restore system several times now experimenting to find a solution to a phone dialer problem. i was bouncing between 2.3.151 and 2.3.340. all my installed applications and data stayed exactly the same each time.

Thanks everyone. With Titanium can I essentially back up my old device exactly the way it is to my SD card. Activate the new device, install Titanium, and restore that identical copy from the same card? That seems almost too easy but if it takes into consideration licenses already paid for and such, that is basically what I'm looking for.

I never had a need to replace my Droid, so I personally haven't tried it, but that's what they claim. Some apps may no longer work if it inspects the phone ID for licensing purposes. Tasker is one of them. You'll need to contact the app developer for these cases.

Thanks, will give it a whirl then. I have paid for Tasker and Launcher Pro Plus along with a few others, those are my primary concerns. The settings and adding my contacts and emails and such would take a few minutes, but not a big deal.
I just made a backup in cw then restored it on my new dx and had 0 problems. It was like I didn't even switch phones (minus the defect on the old one). It was almost TOO easy lol.

I just got my Epic 4G and while I did find the way you can move SOME apps to the sd card once they are installed, I was wondering if there was any way to install/move ALL the applications to the microsd card either normally or after the phone is rooted???
Why?
Fill up the space on your phone first. That's what it is for.
Read speeds are going to be much faster coming from the phone space than the SD card.
Additionally, you won't have to wait forever while the media scanner scans all your apps before you can start using them.
If u rooted get titanium back up pro and it can almost do all the apps on the sd
If you are rooted, you can install this app which will allow you to move the majority of apps to the SD card. Some of them you can't (like launchers, for example) and any with widgets you shouldn't because the widgets won't work.
I'm an ex-Tilt 2-Windows Mobile 6.5 user, so if my phone memory got used up, the phone ran SUPER slow...so I had to keep programs stored ENTIRELY on the sd card, keep my txt msgs to a minimum, otherwise the phone started to CRAWL...is that not true for Android?

Maybe if you fill it to the brink.
Leave ~100 megs for cache. As long as you are not getting any warnings from android about it being to full, then it isn't going to slow down.
If he's asking about backing up EVERYTHING, that's a nandroid backup.
I also wonder if this is a misunderstanding of the concept of app to sd. I know the definition for apps that won't move is service apps right?
I know some stuff wont work because of widgets but when you boot if your card is too full, it takes longer and that is frustrating, well at least to me.
Since the Fire does not have external storage, Titanium BU appears to make a folder in another folder called SD (if I recall correctly).
If I have to reset the Fire back to factory for any reason (say for instance, your mom accidentally sets a lock password and then forgets it ), wont the back up files get erased?
So assuming that is true, whats a good way to back things up? I suppose I could copy the BU folder to a PC every few weeks
TiBackup paid version can do your backup to your Dropbox account and you can then recover from there. Warning rather or very slow depending on your patience level.

DB is an option, however it only gives you 2 gigs unless you pay. I want to be able to back up the entire device in case I need to restore it later.
I have rooted it, changed the launcher, installed Market, etc. I plan on editing those files to prevent the wallpaper from changing back to the default.
It's my mom's Fire. She's 85. This week she accidentally set the password lock and I had to re-set the device and start over.
I want to be ready in case something happens again.
There are tons of options...
I use TB with DB on my Droid Incredible, but I really don't depend on it. Once a week (Sundays), I connect it to my main workstation and simply copy the SDcard contents to my NAS. The 32GB SDCard only has about 15gb on it and I do something else while it is backing up.
I also use AndFTP a lot between a unix server that has a NAS on it as well and commonly move files to and from using SFTP. Works on the KF and every other droid device I have.

TiBackup only deals with apps. So that 2G should be more than enough space. Later you're talking about backing up the contents of /sdcard which is another thing entirely. Simple desktop copy when attached to your computer will be good enough for that. A nicer way would be to use any of the tons of sync-a-folder programs out there and use it instead of the desktop copy. That way after the first time I'd assume it would be garter since it's only changed files and deletions that must be processed.

Copying over the back-up contents every now and again seems like your best bet if 2gb on Dropbox can't handle your TB backups. Especially since you'd be dedicating over a quarter of your Kindle's disk space to back-ups.

In my case I basically don't want to have to re-set and re-set up my mom's fire if she does something.
Most media (except photos, because Amazon doesn't sync photos for some reason) is in the cloud, so I don't have to worry about that.
I don't know if TB will back up all the settings, inc. things I've altered, like the changing wallpaper fix. I hope so, but if not I'll still have to re-do that.
If her storage fills up I guess I can delete the back up file on her Fire and just keep it on her computer.

I have downloaded Titanium Backup to my KF, but im not sure how im supposed to use the app. I downloaded it because I want to have more memory space. I planned to load my kf with music and movies from my computer and I'm sure it will take up most of my space. Im was wondering what kind of steps am i supposed to take to to after I have downloaded the titanium backup to my KF to make this happen...I would also like to know is there a way to get swype on my kf...if you can point me in that direction too...i am rooted with burritoroot3...I also want to know what is the main purpose Go launch ex?

I'm pretty sure factory reset does not wipe the /sdcard folder. I do a factory reset when I load a new ROM and all my books/backups are still there.

I realize this post is a little outdated, but I need to get to my 10th post so I can reply in the Dev forums Leebo, you can use the Kindle Fire Utility (latest version is 0.9.3) to lock the wallpaper in place after you change it (must be rooted and have a non-stock launcher). Kind of a pain to have to do if you change wallpapers a lot, but I think it's the best you can do without flashing a custom ROM. I just flashed CM7 last night and I can pick and choose whatever wallpaper I want and it sticks, even on the lockscreen.
Since that post I discovered (well, read here on xda) that after editing that file, most or all wallpapers of the same type will stay. I put a moving wallpaper on my moms Fire a couple of months ago and it's still there.
How is that CM7 working? Does everything work?
I haven't played with any version of CM because, as I understand, I would loose 4G on my EVO. So I'm wondering if you loose any functionality with the KF.
