Unless google implements a way to track the force closings of applications (maybe even phone specific) and has a market for flawless programs and seperates the the ones which still need work, all of your application ideas will be stolen by the competitors working for the other OS's and as android takes off and the consumers feel the devices are too bugged, android will die, your work and learnings will be for nothing.
Anyone else agree?
lol no. show me a bugless device... Anyone use a Microsoft PC? Wow, that has lasted a long time with bugs and ways to track them.
There are ways and logs to capture errors and fix bugs. it happens every day

There are ways to protect your intellectual property, even if it's free of charge. If you are into money making, then try selling the service, instead of the product. It pays off way more, and is THE open-source state of mind (though it applies to anything, really).
Android does not fall into this category - hence why I always take it as a fun, extracurricular activity.
It will not die, it will live a long and prosperous life, because a million brains in bug tracking is far more effective, than a few developers, cracking on the thing to make a buck.
The former is fun, the later is not. hehehe.. Trust me
@Hepæstus: After, isn't that what OP suggests? The anti christ takes over, and Android dies, right?

I know I know - everyone will jump on this one and prove me wrong but I know myself it is veeeery unlikely to happen.
What do you think if someone comes up with let's call it emulator that can run Apple iPhone apps on Android OS and Windows Mobile OS as well??? Can you imagine that happening and what would be cluster that Apple is caught in to overcome that issue lol...
I guess, but I dont need any fruity apps to tell me how to lose weight and what clothes to wear.

Oh come now. How can one be expected to remember where one parked one's hairdressers car or make a decision about what type of sushi one wants to eat when one is soooo busy touching oneself inappropriately to one's own soft reflection in the screen of one's hypePad?
You have to hold it in a special way you know...much like the new iPhone
There will be huge copyright issues, I don't think apple will let that one happen.
There is something that will allow you to run any iphone app absolutely flawlessly................
The iPhone.........
.........as long as your not left handed.................like me........................
anyone want in on a class action lawsuit against apple because they're obviously trying to eradicate left handers from the human gene pool..............blah blah...............dribble dribble..............blah blah..............is android on the hd2 yet??.............blah blah blah..............NO UPGRADE TO WP7..............
THIS IS AN OUTRAGE!..............
So to answer your question........... Yes i would personally like to see that happen.
I wouldnt use it, Id just like to see the reaction from apple....
I wonder how long it would take before the developer was found hanging under a bridge with an apple shoved in their mouth...........

There are copyright issues with the ROMs we use on this website, none of the ROMs are owned by the people who make them, they are all the property of Microsoft, and Windows Phone 7's locked OS is evidence they aren't too happy with people modding their software.
If someone theoreticaly could port the iPhone OS 4.0, there is little Apple could do about it.

Exciting News, George Hotz (Geohot) set sights to Jailbreak WP7

Being an old Iphone owner (I know, big mistake), I know what Geohot has bought to the Iphone community. For those who dont know, I will explain some of his achievements.
Geohot is responsible for Blackra1n and Limera1n, these tools are used to Jailbreak the new bootrom or MC model of Iphone 3gs and Iphone 4 (IOS4+), Ipod and Ipad.
Most recently the first to Jailbreak the PS3.
Over on his website, he states he is going out to buy a Windows Phone 7. In the site it also states that Sony and Apple have served court papers. With the recent Microsoft announcement indicating that Microsoft are more polite, personal and more direct approach towards the Jailbreakers, it seems Jailbreakers are all now setting their sights on WP7.
Over at ModMyI there is an article which also states Geohot as well as other Jailbreakers are setting their sights on Jailbreaking Windows Phone 7.
What does this mean for Windows Phone users, or HD2 WP7 users. Well, it will open up the device so we can side load applications on the phone instead of relying on a pc, set custom ringtones and give the phone more usability, to name just a few which has already been planned.
What with Windows bringing us the WP7 in a simular fashion to Iphone, then for me this is great news and in my opinion will make WP7 the best it can be. Cotulla (Am I worthy to mention his name) and the DFT has done wonderful work with our HD2 devices. Just imagine what will be achieved by the God, Cotulla and Geohot both working on HD2 and WP7 respectfully.
I thought I would share this news to see what the XDA community thinks.
awesome.. this should speed up WP7 mods.
Maybe he will create "better" chevron :]
That's really nice, but there are also other talented people, who are making great work in jailbreaking windows phone 7 devices.
And Geohot isn't god ^^

The "Better Chevron" is already here Courtesy of WinMobile God Julien Schapman (His Advanced Config Tool is part of every noteworthy WM5-6 ROM out there!), who already brought us the amazing TouchXPlorer for WP7 He is done with a software called Windows Phone 7 Device Manager, which will allow you to do basically EVERYTHING with your WP7 Device including but not limited to deploying XAP's OTA, exploring the device from the PC and similar goodies. WP7DM is not released yet, because he waits for the official MS update and doesn''t want MS to cup him off with it

Somehow I dont think M$ will give someone a free WP7 phone to Jailbreak their own product. If it is true though then it would be interesting to learn the reason behind this. Besides, it isnt just Geohot who is moving onto WP7 Jailbreaking, there is a whole host of Jailbreakers moving onto WP7. For instance, Julien Schapman is set to release "Device Manager" which will let you do things on your phone where up to now has only been possible via PC.
The future looks bright.

It is certainly true that WP7 has been Jailbroken already. However there does seem to be a lot of people having problems with doing it with Chevron.exe so if Geohot or anyone else can bring an easier way to do it then I am all for that.
There is the problem of installing xap files only from the pc as well, what we need is the ability to do it via the device as well.
WP7 is new and there are still a lot of bugs which need ironing out. Once done then it has the potential to be the best operating system on a phone, I have no doubt about that.

Geohot is responsible for BlackRa1n and Limera1n. He made the Jailbreak which many said was impossible made possible. Blackra1n for new bootrom MC model of 3GS and Limera1n for IPhone 4 or IOS4+.
Saurik is responsible for Cydia, a program which makes the most out of Jailbroken handsets. Saurik has never Jailbroken, only provide the program to run sources off to get stuff for Jailbroken phones.
zibri el Fontu was the first to Jailbreak the Iphone back in Feb 2008 by using a program called Ziphone. This Wiki explains all so I stand corrected on Geohot being the first and post 1 has been corrected.
However, this post is not about who is first or a history lesson in Iphone Jailbreaking. This post is about the XDA community leaving their views about the news that Geohot is now concentrating his efforts on WP7
Good news mate! I don't think it would take time...imo windows are more easier to hack and tweak! LOL! I will expect this hack in about a month or so!
Also read this:
Indeed; Microsoft WANT someone to jailbreak their OS..But why??????
"Some are predicting that they will just give away a phone that he will end up hacking, then that will be the end...My thought on this is "If you want stop a thief, hire a thief." And having a hacker of Geo's magnitude on their side will help them find the security issues and holes in their system."
Microsoft = SMART ASS!
http://www.rantrave.com/Rave/Geohot-Offered-Windows-Phone-7-By-Microsoft---To-Hack.aspx
Only time will tell why Microsoft has offered Geohot a WP7 handset. ModMyI indicated that there are quite a few Jailbreakers now working on WP7 so we can rest assured that good ties are on the way.

Why do you think that's a good thing? :S
If MS is successful in becoming all buddy-buddy with the WP7 jailbreakers then they will all follow the example of the guys that made Chevron.
i.e. they will accept Microsoft's "kindness", possibly a big wad of cash too, and patch any vulnerabilities for Microsoft.
As far as I can see this "openness" towards jailbreakers is actually a bad thing for us - very intelligent on Microsoft's part, but bad for us.

1 more reason to enjoy your WM phone: rootkit hidden in millions of cellphones

So, there's a rootkit hidden in millions of cellphones
Rootkit found in Android, Symbian and even iOS handsets … but not Windows Phone handsets.
The rootkit belongs to a company called Carrier IQ and it seems that it has low-level access to the system that allows it to spy on pretty much everything that you do with your handset. This, on the face of it, seems like an extremely serious breach of security, privacy and trust.
The capabilities of the rootkit were first discovered by 25-year-old Trevor Eckhart.
Here’s a video showing how everything, including text messages and encrypted web searches, are being logged. It’s truly horrifying.

????!!!!
I am at a loss I tried to see if this was in the ROM I am using and I do not see anything like it. Is this program not an essential part of android and only in the stock ROMs? If they were to root their phones and uninstall/delete the program?
Also, Their response is BS I would be totally pissed that they are wasting processes on my phone making it less powerful that it actually could be.
I don't care how they spin it if they do not ask for permission or make it completely obvious that these programs are running or just installed it should be totally frowned on by all phone manufacturers as well as definitly by the FCC!!

Petition to Microsoft to allow jailbreaking

Hi all.
Haven't seen this topic yet so I thought I'd introduce it. Has a petition ever been sent directly to Microsoft to allow jailbreaking and development of apps in a Cydia like store. I'm positive this would increase the popularity of wp8. There are are so many little things like decreasing the interval for updating live tile, and creating playlists on the phone itself. Widgets would also be nice. I just got a 920 and like it a lot. I was using launcher8 on my gn2 before and that launcher allowed widgets on tiles, more rectangular tile options etc.
Are you really think that Microsoft or somebody else care about these petitions?

if enough people sign, then yes I do. I'm convinced that many iOS and android users would try a windows phone. There would be far more developers making apps also.
Jailbreaking will never be allowed on windows phone becuase Microsoft wants to win over the business sector. One of the reason the secure boot was implemented was because of businesses complaining about security on WP7.
Besides, there aren't really BIG things to get from jailbreaking, other than useless things some individuals care about. the vast majority of WP8 users are happy with their phones, plus most of the things you are asking (like adding playlists on the phone), will be supported eventually.
Lowering the interval for live tiles is a really bad idea btw.
If microsoft ever allows access to the file system, there will be no need for anything else: developers will pick it up from there and do their thing.
Ain't ever going to happen. Ms is bent over backwards by OEMS and carriers

I am sure if we started a bounty or kickstarter and rightfully paid one of the hackers to jailbreak wp8 they could get the job done a lot sooner
so how shall we go about this?

Still won't happen dude. I don't know but there seems to be some sort of aversion to WP by all the devs. The iPhone/iPad community has a number of devs piling over eachother to bring out the "next best way to JB". Android, I don't even need to get started. Other OSs too will fall in place soon. But what keeps the devs away from WP is a bit of a mystery to me.
BTW, I hope you know what happened to the kids that jailbroke the first Gen WP devices. They got hired by MS and were given a T shirt, if my memory is good.
So... that's that.
It's hilarious how you people believe that is easy to exploit WP8, Devices that use it have Secure Boot and Bitlocker so exploiting the boot process is practically impossible, exploiting on app-level is also hard as all apps run over a sandbox and the user has no administrator privileges so you can't use the sandbox exploitation available for Windows RT.
Plus there's overall no appeal for hacking it other than it runs over NT.
I think we should do it, there is nothing to loose, but it shouldn't be for jail breaking but for allowing file system access similar to Windows RT
Everybody can try to found a exploit.
If somebody will have luck, he will be the man....
But like people here say...
Its very very hard!

It's better for Microsoft (in the long run) that the OS will not be jailbroken: Jailbroken devices can install pirated applications, and pirated applications makes application developers angry.
Currently, app devs have no choice but to develop their applications to the 2 major OSs out there (iOS and Android), and know that in some point it is quite likely that people who jailbreak their devices can install pirated copies of their applications.
In the long run, as WP would start gaining major market share, application developers would be more keen to focus their development for WP as they'd know their property could not be pirated (if, supposedly, WP will remain unhacked).
This is of course only hypothetical - there's no protection which is made by men and cannot be hacked by men, and I'm more than sure that the more user-base and interest WP gains, the more likely is that someone would find a loophole in the OS and it'd be jailbroken...
And maybe not
Thread moved to General
I am as well very certain that Microsoft will not allow for Jailbreaking of the devices. They have some programs that will get you a free dev account to develop on top of the Plattform but they don't Support changes to the Plattform itself. If you want to make your Point about giving Devs certain APIs go to wpdev.uservoice.com and Support them with your votes.
As for jailbreaking WP: I'm sure it can be done because in the end: techniques exist to exploit basically everything but as was already said: Microsoft isn't making it easy.

It may be possible, but as for now they have closed damn near every hole we could think of. I'd say the only way we can hope for SOME progress is if we can exploit the root certificate and policies somehow. I know GoodDayToDie had a few good potential ideas. It's not that the device NEEDS to be jailbroken, we need to be given more trust. I feel as if Microsoft automatically feels like we will screw everything up so it's being our overprotective mother instead. We all know what happens when you are too overprotective to those you care about.....
With that said, if we can just be given a LITTLE more freedom.. That's all I ask for. I don't think we would have to worry about any type of malware since the App Hub process is smart enough to give me the red X if I'm trying to call MessageBox.Show() from a background task.
/endrant.
What if we paid you the bounty?
Sent from my SGH-T899M using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
iOS is certified afaik for government use, so the business security issue is specious. Not everybody will hack their device anyway.
There are different levels of security certifications, similarily to Mil-Spec Standards that exist for a lot of different criteria. Allowing people to do more with their devices isn't really at the core of Microsoft's concerns here. They don't try to push it though as they want applications in the Store and not on the web. Piracy is likely to play a role here too.
As for a bounty to make a JailBreak happen - it might be an incentive for certain developers to start looking into it. With WP7 the way most of the time was to hack the Bootloader and then flash a custom ROM to allow for additional access. With WP8 people might need to look into other ways in given that Secure Boot is likely to be a very hard nut to crack. Given that the original Jailbreak for WP7 relied on custom certificates it's likely that Microsoft invested there to close this off better but it's of course still worth investigating.
The more important part in the end would be to get Microsoft to make more available through the official APIs. They are extending those and this has made more functionality available every time they did a major update to the OS (Mango, Apollo).
Another point to note is that native interop is now part of the regular SDK. It's therefore likely that native APIs will be better protected against accesses from unauthorized Apps than they have been in WP7 (where the problem was getting native code to run at all).

Not trying to be negative but I don't think the would care. On their won suggestion site (http://windowsphone.uservoice.com/forums/101801-feature-suggestions/suggestions/2281201-custom-sounds-for-sms-mms-email-notifications-e) the haven't even responded to the 40,000 + petitions that people have been voting for 2 years for custom MMS\SMS; something that is so easy to do.
Thanks for everyone's responses. I just went back to my gn2. I found too many compromises in wp8. The funny thing is, I use a wp8 launcher on android and it's much more versatile than wp8 itself. The l920 was also a disappointment. I'm no stranger to phone cameras and I was rarely able to take a good picture with it. I like the l920's design better than the gn2, but not much else.
