Hi,
I'm thinking of buying this phone but I can't find the answer to my question (I did search...)
I need this device unlocked (i.e. simfree).
I've read somewhere that s=off means simfree, is that right?
anyone here got experience with unlocking this device and using it with sim cards other that Tmobile
thanks...
Here's an answer.
"S=OFF" just makes the boot blocks and kernel partition writeable.
"Radio S=OFF" unlocks the phone. Other terms for this you might find include "SIM Unlock".
"Super CID" allows ROMs from other carriers.
Here's a thread specific to this phone: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858996
(You can also just purchase an unlocked phone. They're available, from T-Mobile and other vendors, here's one example: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16875502068.)

Those are different things as well. Radio S=OFF changes the radio to pass the security=off flag to the bootloader, as an alternative to flashing a bootloader where s-off is hard coded. It's just one step earlier in the boot process.
SIM Unlock is a different setting, though gfree from the thread jggimi linked can do all of those things.
Thanks for the clarification!

I followed the goldcard instructions in the GSM hero forum, and I think i have a goldcard.. is this used on our phones? or how can I see if it worked
Dont believe that can be used on the CDMA version... Could be wrong though
i would strongly sugest not dicking round with that whole thing unless you know kind of what you are doing, or you read up more on the topic.
The goldcard is used to bypass a check the recovery software uses to make sure a specific update is for your phone and carrier. This allows people that bought the asian hero to put the software that was made for the uk on it.
The version that is for the uk has a exploit in it that allows root access, the asian version does not. We tried this on the CDMA version and it doesn't bypass the hardware version check in the recovery software.
The GSM version doesn't have a problem cause they are all the hero100 model, we have the hero200, so it won't work.
I don't want to steer you away from tinkering, but at least read up on the subject more before you do so. Expecially when it comes to stuff like this that could damage your phone.
hope this helps

well nothing broke when I did it.. I still can't flash anything but the phone boots up and operates fine. I just don't see too much activity in terms of rooting, so I was just trying out mothods on the other phones

-please note which version of RUU you used in your method. Page/file link if possible.
-please also note what SD card you used brand & capacity, also link to procedure you yourself used to create the goldcard.
I have been unsuccessful as many others of us have been and are eager to hear your reply on this as you are the only recorded success story.
I'll be more than glad to help you once I find out the info above in terms of next steps to take to get you rooted.
Thanks,

well I followed http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=572683
that guide, but I used QMAT version 4.30 instead of 5.06 (the site was down when I tried to use it)
I have a 8gig sandisk sdhc card

all the qmat is used for in that guide is reverseing your card's cid code. This can be done manually by typeing in your number backwards but qmat does make it simpler.
ok so assuming your goldcard is functioning you would attempt to flash a RUU from a different carrier in the step listed below
20. Use the Official HTC RUU to downgrade to 2.73.405.5 (
ftp://xda:[email protected]_2.73.405.5_WWE_release_signed_NoDriver.exe
) from which you can fastboot boot and/or root your phone with flashrec.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=559613
now this step is where most of us have failed, it says incorrect hardware ID when you try to flash because we have hero200 as the hardware reports to hboot/recovery image. The goldcard was to my belief just to bypass the cid check not the hardware ID check.
I was under the assumption that you were able to flash this RUU. So I'm taking it that I was confused and you are in with the rest of us.
yea i think he is unable to flash, so its back to square one...
Well my phone was rooted my a friend's friend a while ago. Now I want to flash a new radio because my gps is acting up, but want to make sure that I have everything set-up correctly before I do so.What settings have to be "unlocked" or so in order to achieve this?
Any tips and things I should watch out for regarding flashing a new radio would be greatly appreciated.
hey the way you would make sure your s-off and all the things you need before bfore starting is to check h-boot. to do this turn your phone and hold the voume down and power button at the same time you will get to a white screen with androids on skateboards. there at the top you see your h-boot at the top it should say these 2 things 1 is h-boot s-off of course and the other important one is 2 your phone has a enganiering h-boot that lets your phone be able to flash different roms from different carrier brand roms like the desire rom on a g2 and vise versa and also radios. and things to watch out for is make sure your dowloadig a safe file before flashing and to make sure you download a backup of the radio that you have just in case something ffffffsss up if you know what i mean. just put the file on the root of your sdcard and get into your h-boot menu and the h-boot will pick up the file and you just press up to select upgrade and you should be fine. to check which or if it stuck you can check this in your menu ,settings , about phone and under your software info youll see baseband version and it should show the new radio you flashed. any questions feel free to ask my friend ok ;-)
As stated above, check your bootloader. If the first line ends in S-ON, you will need to obtain S-OFF using one of the guides (I suggest looking at the Wiki). If the first line ends in SHIP S-OFF, you have S-OFF through gfree. If the first line ends in ENG S-OFF, you have S-OFF through the engineering bootloader (and maybe gfree as well---you can check out the Wiki for an app on how verify whether or not gfree was used).
Regardless, if you have S-OFF through either method, you can flash a new radio. Unlike what the post above stated, you do not need the engineering HBOOT to flash a radio (or custom ROMs for that matter). The engineering HBOOT simply allows you to use fastboot to flash partitions on your phone while in the bootloader. If you do not have the engineering HBOOT, you can flash the radio through the PC10IMG.zip update method (there is a thread in the dev section).
Thanks for giving the full info i knew i forgot i did use gfree and it unlocked and all the good stuff i thought that included for you to be able to flash radios and any branded roms thanks

Thanks guys! Yes, I checked and I have s-off. Great!
When I get on my pc I'll "thank" both your useful posts.
So which is the safest route to take to flash a radio? Through h-boot?
EDIT: Already flashed the radio, thanks guys.

Download the radio zip bag.put it into SDcard root.rename it to "PC10IMG.zip".then goto h-boot and g2 will auto flash it.
No problem I just had to flash back to the stock radio wasn't getting the best service with the new updated desire radio glad everything was figured out

Hey guys,
I was just wondering. When this AlphaRev thing is released, and I set my Wildfire S-OFF, will I be able to use SIM card from any carrier? Right now I'm able to use SIM card from only one carrier.
Thanks.

Nope.
+tenchars, etc...
im not 100% sure but i can use any sim card after getting s-off from xtc clip so it should happen
The xtc clip produces a Gold card that unlocks the carrier-locked phone, the alpharevx produces only an s-off, meaning that you can install custom roms, recovery, permanent root etc.
XTC Clip does both S-OFF and SIM unlock while AlphaRev does ONLY S-OFF.
Is there a difference between sim unlock and carrier unlock.
Of course i don't need it, but just asking to know....
AFAIK, There's no difference between carrier unlock and sim unlock..
One more thing i think u can unlock carrier using debranding method given in this forum. That means downgrading/changing region of current ROM. Its not that much difficult. It requires gold card i think. There's one easy method let me try to explain it.
1. Follow all steps in changing ROM region/debranding/downgrading.
Eg- If u've France or India or any regional ROM downgrading it to WWE Rom.
2.IMP- Here's the trick to unlock the carrier:
Follow steps on downgrading till editing the mtd0 with HxD or Hex editor.
In that u may find something like HT_031 or something it depends on region, change that to 000000 that called super cid.
After changing changes to mtd from above and the downgrading guide follow the guide as usual.
I hope this may help you to unlock carrier. I dont know but u may try it.
No. Debranding and SIM unlock are NOT the same thing.
Debranding (for example, by goldcard) removes network operator customisations by installing generic software, but you still cannot use a SIM card from another network.
SIM unlock can be only done using special methods as of now (XTC Clip, any third party mobile phone shop) and it enables you to use whichever SIM card you want, but you can keep your branding if you like (ROM doesn't have to match the operator, AFAIK)
When you are in hboot, you can see the option "sim lock". Is it trough that your phone becomes sim locked (and unlocked)? And if yes, is it something we can manage ourselfs? It would be a great security for the phone against thieves
Thank you in advance!
Erwin
According to jkoljo in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1014046
It does not do anything unless you have just the correct files in your SD card that define the network and so on. Only service centers and network providers have such files. So you are fine, nothing bad happened.

Which means the option does nothing unless you have carrier-specific files on your SD card. Files which carriers use to sim-lock the device I presume.
I need to return my MT4G to HTC as it has a hardware problem. Hence I need to reset everything back to factory settings so that my warranty is not void. This means pre-root, pre-unlock, pre-modifications, etc.
Please can anyone tell me how to turn SIMLOCK on again? I had used the gfree method to remove it. And also how do you return the CID settings to its original? What are the original CID settings? I have searched but I don't see any thread on how to turn SIMLOCK on again so that it is locked to T-MO only.
Thank you much!
Please read the rooting thread in Development section.
It has unrooting procedure.
Search would have helped you.

Here is a link to the thread you need http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858996 Procedure to revert is about half way down
Hi WOLF26915, prior to my posting, I had followed the procedures that you've listed on that link. Through a mix of flashing a stock ROM and using gfree, I can unroot, can turn S-ON but I am unable to lock the phone again through that listed procedure. I believe many posts deep in, others have said the same about that procedure that it unlocks, turns S-ON but it doesn't return the SIM lock back. My phone remains unlocked. The ./gfree -S command removes the SIM lock but there seems to be no equivalent command in gfree to return the SIM lock. Flashing of the stock ROM does not return SIM lock because it is located in another part of the phone. Sounds like there are specific commands to execute to return SIM lock. I just don't know what they are. I've looked hard. Seems like all the many procedures on the Web that I have found is about removing SIM lock, not returning it. I also want to return the phone back to its original CID but I don't know what the original CID is.
I am quite sure I did not make any errors in my following of the step by step instructions that have been listed on XDA.
Please help. Thank you so much.
There is a section in the guide, called:
Procedure to revert
Execute that section.
If you don't have a backup file part7backup-<numbers>.bin that is required - you won't be able to return SIM lock.
In addition, you're most likely wasting time - nobody is going to check the CID. Return the stock bootloader with S-ON, and it'll be more than enough.

I sent mine back with s-on but with the custom cid and Sim unlock. They only check for the problem. You should be fine as long as it appears stock

Hi, I have an old MyTouch 4G (right now I'm rocking a Epic 4G Touch) and I have a question regarding unlock codes. My E4GT does not use a SIM card, and I need to take a phone with me when I go overseas (Italy). OK, here we go:
When I go into Bootloader, the top of the screen says GLACIER PVT ENG S-OFF. My question is, will I need an unlock code once I slide in a foreign SIM I don't have another SIM to test. Thanks in advance!!!
Well only you would know that, when you were rooting, did you do the sim unlock command in terminal emulator.
Wait, to root, did you use GFREE or Root.sh?

I honestly don't remember. I rooted it so long ago, I haven't used it in so long. I wish I had someone nearby with a SIM so I can test it out.
I did find an old TIM SIM card (Telecom Italia Mobile) and when I slide it in all it says is "no service." I don't get a prompt for the code or anything, but I'm not sure if that's definitive or not.
