[Q] screen responsiveness - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

Just because i'm curious:
As long as i used winmo and android on the hd2, i thought this buddy just couldn't do a better job. There's always been this little delay (although better in android) between tapping the screen and see the phone reacting. Take scrolling or surrounding tapped icons with a "you-tapped-me" indicator: who ever played with an iDevice knows what i'm talking about and how it should be. Only the HD7 felt like iResponsive. ;-)
Not that i tried [email protected] yet, but watching the video, i couldn't believe it.
It looked as snappy as i always dreamed of!
Can anyone tell me why this wasn't possible in the past?
Ok, let's say winmo just was too lazy, but android? Are there better or new drivers?
Couldn't we adopt the way of i2c-polling (or whatever is making the difference) and use it for android? Or is it another way of event-handling?
Snappyness is the only little thing i'm jealous of the iPeolpe...

Lets be FAIR , is HD really 'bestphoneever' or its just about 3.8" display?

hi everyone,
I'm a Die Hard fan of Blackstone/Touch HD , and im waiting for it for a long time !
but after reading about it, watching movies, following discussions, I feel its nothing but a HUGE and tempting display .
we're all WM users and we didnt experienced any large-display phones with such size, and thats why we're trying to believe this is BEST !
since theres no TV-OUT capability , hard one handed usage , no D-PAD ( C'mon , its not iphone that fingers could do anything with any pressure ) and weird camera lens box!
is it really we wanted or its just another "I WANT TO BELIEVE?"
I do see where you're coming from... To me, I'll be honest, it's the Diamond in a REALLY nice case. One that's familiar to a long-term Elf user. The touchy-feely case, no desire to use the D-Pad... But when all's said and done: It's a huge display and has a 5MP camera. It's the best ever HTC, but it will be easy to top...
Now I feel bad... Thanks...
Hi,
Interesting point of view. ... and I agree most of it.
To be honest, the only thing I am interested in Touch HD is the huge 3.8" screen.
I like browsing the internet using Opera Mini (and Opera 9 of course) and I have no problem with my current HTC Kaiser.
However, I always envy with phone that has big screen, 3.5" like my friend's iPhone.
So, thats my sole reason to think about buying Touch HD.
However, I am holding back because there are couple of things that I need to convince myself:
1. TouchFlo 3D cannot show multiple appointments/tasks in its today screen.
This is rubish, I cannot understand why HTC does not implement this like the old HTC Home. And I have not found better solution for this.
Of course I can turn off TF3D (can I?) and use HTC Home or SpB Mobile Shell.
But ................ why???
2. No DPAD, can I live with it? Probably ...
But I have a dream to have a GAME DEVICE and PDA all in one.
I cannot do that with HTC Kaiser because of the graphics driver and bad performance. Really, I hate it.
3.8" is very nice for a game device. However, without DPAD, the game will be limited.
If I look the current Touch HD design, a DPAD is still possible in the center of those 4 buttons!
I know, I can buy Nintendo DS or PSP, but hey! I dont like carrying a lot of devices
5 MP camera is nothing ... the quality is still doubtful.
No TV-OUT like Raphael? Grrr!!!
Well, this is my personal opinion.
I dont know, probably I will buy it anyway ... or wait until I can hold and see it in real live ... and judge if the 3.8" screen is enough to convince myself to buy.
upcomming phones have almost same display size ( like ASUS Galaxy 7 ) and solved problems ...
but i want it from HTC .
I think it's yet another half-a***d swipe at the iPhone, without any real thought put into it. WM fans want to believe this is "the one" that's going to give them everything they (perhaps secretly) really like about the iPhone, while still wearing the Windows Mobile badge. In reality, it's just another WM phone with a bigger screen, and actually a few disadvantages over some other models (like that lack of a D-pad). In spite of the screen I really doubt the multimedia will be as slick as the iPhone, and for gaming it's a dead duck - unlike the iPhone where the appstore is brimming full of immersive games built around the iPhone's acceleromotor and multi-touch screen, the Touch HD only has the WM back catalogue to choose from, 99% of which will be written to run on non-accelerometor equipped phones with D-pads.
Meanwhile, underneath the Touchflo you still have an interface designed for a stylus, however big the display.

Get your act together HTC
I still cannot decide which model to choose - X1 or HD - and now I am thinking more and more of getting an X1. I simply understand that the only thing about HD that I am going to really love and cream-my-pants because of is the 3.8" screen.
I think that HD is a perfect device for non-WM-addicts, for people who will use just TF3D-interface and Opera at most, without installing any tweaks/programs/registry-hacks/emulators/debuggers/consoles/younameit. Cause when you want to install one of them, you're in trouble - no hardware keys, no D-pad... Achtung!
One more thing I thought about.. Every phone has a kind of a "secret combination of keys", e g "turn-on-the-phone-holding-two-buttons-pressed-and-enter-diagnostics-mode". I wonder if the sensor buttons would do that?
If I am going to express my opinion I will rather say I am going for the large screen size to be honest, Window mobile did not change since, its still WM 6.1 and not much difference on software, yes is the look of the phone that impress me and the size of the screen, because I personally enjoy watching movies on move.
How can HTC put such a cheap, crappy-looking clock onto such a "high-end" device?
The analogue clock from the TF2D (as per the Touch 3G) just looks so much better.
I also agree with the comments about the Appointments - this is a very important point for me, and if not easily resolvable will make me look eleswhere.
So do I remove the TF3D and use Spb instead? If I were to do that, would I then lose the scrollability of the unit - is the finger-scrolling part of TF3D or part of WM6.1?
From a non techie user point-of-view, the more I am finding out about this, the less excited I am about it. Having just read through the manual, I realise it doesn't do any more than any other WM 6.1 pda, except for the bigger screen. And even the quality of films on that seems to be in question!
Maybe I should stop reading sites such as this - lol.
Look we all love the design factor, large screen, hi res etc. That makes it the best win mo phone. Don't let these posts turn you off. You fell in love with the phone for a reason. As for the minor problems (2 appointments etc), well... where there's a will there's a way... xda-developers. Just give them time to work their magic.
Anyway there is always Second Today to see appointents http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=O2MYv5ooIp0
Nothing...........
I just Ordered mine from pdashop.nl 1 minute ago... And i don't need any negation right now. for 629 Euro. ....It better impress
Nothing is gonna take that joy from me..
You can fall in love with a phone for the wrong reasons! I really do think expectations are too high for this device, and people are right to question and rethink this now, before they've paid their money... IMO it's a flawed design, WinMo needs some kind of d-pad, it's not finger friendly enough even on this size screen to get by without it. If losing the hardware controls is a necessity of that larger screen, then they need to replace the UI completely, and use some other OS.
...
Are you guys serious?
Let's see the complaints that make this device "just another WM phone."
1. TV-OUT Capability
Why do I need this? WHEN will I need this? If I am at home, I will use my laptop to connect my HDTV via HDMI. Using a phone at home for it's TV-Out capability is well, useless. If you can afford this device, and are tech-savvy enough to know about it, then odds are you have an HDMI capable computer and TV.
The ONLY scenario where I could see this feature be useful is if I wanted to output video on a random TV, maybe at a bar:
"Hey bartender, hook up my HTC TOUCH HD to the TV please."
LOL
Come on!
2. Hard one handed usage? This coming from people who love QWERTY keyboards. I find this hilarious. What's so hard about it? Move your thumb around and you're good to go.
3. OMG! Weird camera lens box!! WTF is weird about it? Now, if you want to tell me no flash, alright I can agree with that. But to nag about the camera lens box? I think it looks good. I mean, I honestly don't care what it looks like as long as it's not pink with rainbows.
What are some other complaints?
No directional pad. Well, you have a 3.8in TOUCH screen and you want a d-pad? Is this a joke? If you want a d-pad, don't buy a TOUCH screen.
No games. Who plays games on their phone? Seriously. If you want to play games, go and buy a PSP or DS.
Home screen only shows a couple of appointments. This is a SLIGHT issue, but something tells me it will be fixed in no time by the heads roaming these forums.
-------------------------------------------------------
Now, let's compare these issues with the iPhone, since there were about 101 insinuations that we are desperate WM fan boys.
No TV-out:
iPhone doesn't have TV out either. OOOOOOOO.
Weird camera lens box:
iPhone has a useless 2megapixel camera without recording or focus features.
One handed usage:
Anyone notice that you have to slide SIDEWAYS just to unlock the iPhone? Explain to me how you are going to do that with ONE hand. At least HTC had the foresight to allow you to use the phone primarily with your thumb with up and down gestures.
The HTC Touch HD is NOT like any other WM phone or ANY phone for that matter. It's sensitivity is far superior, beautiful screen, FAST, and can do anything you can throw at it besides useless things such as outputting video at a bar.
Oh, and please don't get me started on the lack of iPhone features. How about the ability to CUT and PASTE? Want to talk to me about the iPhone marketplace? There are programmers all over the net with custom programs for WM that allows us to do basically ANYTHING, even emulate the iPhone.
Give me a break. This is a GREAT device and as far as I can tell, the only thing missing is flash.
And if you want to really be douche about it, most phones nowadays have a phone, video/music player, and a camera! So I guess we should all just get ourselves a Nokia 7610 and cluck.
So, could I use Second Today to run something like the Spb Today screen (because I am used to and love its flexible Appointments display), or am I mixing up technologies?
And just how safe /easy is it for a non-techie to install Second Today, and to change the button functions (and does this require a registry change, because now I'm starting to talk a new language?)
And, whilst I'm in a writing mood, the other issues raised were video playback quality, and suspected lag in GPS navigation.
Can anyone confirm the current situation with these. Is the playback quality acceptable without dropped frames, and has it been absolutely confirmed by a real test that there is no GPS lag?

haha opinions from Apple Fan Boys dont count. All opinions on gaming (based on nothing), no dpad (which i love), Poor multimedia (not from the videos ive seen), App store stinks because hacked apps for iphone way better and FREE,
I owned an Iphone for a month and couldnt get rid of it fast enough because WM offers so much more functionality for business and "hackability"
dont get wrong ! iphone is NO WAY competitor, its just a fancy phone! not more not less !
im going to buy this beast, but i really want to know is this really a big deal ?
i dont think so !
but we all know the form factor and the screen size is undeniable ! thats why im going for HD .

When you are on holiday? At the hotel, in a country where you dont understand local language ... you end up with CNN
So, TV-Out is nice to have! Hook it up to the hotel TV and play movie from your PDA.
Why some users complained about this TV-Out? Because the "previous" device has that, HTC Raphael. Why dont they include it in the next iteration?
Of course, probably there are some other reasons, like PRICE etc. But I see this TV-Out as a valid point.

Not always like that. The OS (WinMo 6.1) is not specifically designed for touch screen only.
People like me, prefer to use DPAD to move around the UI, much faster, efficient and less-thumb-hurt

Absolutely. For the record, I have no idea why anyone's complaining about the "weird camera lens box" on the HD. It's just a lens.
The iPhone's camera is just a camera, and makes no pretence to be anything more - if you want a better camera, buy one (or a different phone).

Easily and quickly about a million times a day. Seriously, you're just demonstrating you've never been near one, and are desperately trying to think up things which might be wrong with it, on the strength of a few screenshots you've seen. The "slide to unlock/answer" is an excellent feature that's completely natural to use one handed - it works so well that even HTC have tried to imitate it with a similar "slide to answer" feature on the, ahem, Touch HD.
At least HTC had the foresight to allow you to use the phone primarily with your thumb with up and down gestures.

Wake up and smell yesterday's coffee. It's like like every other WM phone, runs the same software as every other WM phone, it even has the same processor and internal spec as most other current WM phones. The screen is new, as is the inconvenient lack of d-pad - everything else is the same old same old.

Not really, but I'll tell about the Appstore - bloody brilliant. Thousands of quality apps, many of them free, all the paid ones generally much, much cheaper than their WinMo equivalents, and all there to be browsed and downloaded right on the device, updates alerted and downloaded in the same way.. yep, it's a fantastic system. Is that what you wanted to know?

Now why would you want to emulate a rubbish old iPhone?
For the record, I used a Tytn II for the past year, I've never owned a Mac, and I've never been a "fanboy" of any damn thing, but if you think the iPhone's a soft target for a bit of WinMo frustration, you're mistaken.

HD is over-rated ?

OK at the risk of starting a flame war I want to ask for some objective feedback on the HD. I tried the HD in a shop today for about 20 minutes and I was quite disappointed. (I have a HTC tytn so I used my experience over the last 18 months with that as a reference.). My brief conclusions
(a) The screen is big with a lot of detail as everyone says but its not as bright as the iPhone, G1 or blackberry Storm. Also the blacks are a bit murky so the constrast is not as good as the iPhone, G1 or the Storm.
(b) The interface felt very "laggy" with lots of freezing. (I've subsequently found a thread here on XDA-Developers where there are many compaints of freezes for several seconds - the unit I tried in the shop belonged to the Sales guy and had been up and running in less than 1 day with nothing extra installed on it - I ended up showing the sales guy how to do some things ! ) Certainly TF3D was no way as "slick" as the iPhone or the G1. When trying to browse the web the HD I perfered the G1 when if on the HD I could see more !
(c) One of my requirements is basic operations should be possible with one hand. The lack of hardware buttons and a D-pad / trackball or scroller seems to make that difficult? For example, it was difficult to take a decent close up picture of someone as you have to press the screen which moves the HD and so causes a loss of focus. On the third attempt I gave up trying to take a decent picture.
(d) For such a big screen TF3D makes inefficient use of the screen. I was particularly disappointed with the music player. I got the impression that rather than focus on functionality HTC really wanted to make things look good.
Overall I was dissappointed. I really want to get rid of my Wm5 based Tytn but it looks like I might have to look at something else
Please convince me otherwise !
Can those of you who've had real experience (I.e. for than a couple of days - where you are in the honeymoon period) provide some feedback on the HD?
not going to convince you to change. i suggest you stick with the Tytn and you'll save yourself a lot of second guessing and heart ache. based on a-d above, the HD is not for you.
I played with the iPhone for 20 minutes and hated it... But when I tried the HD for about 20 minutes I loved it.
What the hek every now and then someone comes and start his own comparison of HD to Iphone!!!!
IPHONE for many of us is Cr***ap ...
You have already started the thread by painting such as prefect picture of iPhone. If your requirements are better met by that, just go get yourself an iPhone. Everyone person's requirements are different. For me, iPhone does not meet my need and HD does. If you want to know why, go to this thread and read every post there by myself.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=443900
No point in flaming him (I have an Hermes as well and have a lot of questions about HD vs Touch Pro for instance)
It is really interesting to read people's opinion, may it be positive or negative to help many potential users chose with all cards in hand
Stick with your TyTn .... and wait for the next year 2009 devices.
For sure HD broughr fresh blood to the WinMo device, but thats not enough.
I am pretty sure, 2009 will be very interesting for mobile device (WinMo 6.5, Tegra?)
I have N95 for 15 Months and i thought i would never change phone again till iPhone 3G came out so i decided to upgrade.
At the same time my brother just bought Touch Diamond and I have to admit that I really hate the Diamond since the first few mins of playing with it. Laggy.. Sloppy.. Jerky.. Slowly.. Whatever u called it, Diamond has it all.
But now my brother decide to get a Touch HD, hoping that it will lift up our feeling some way some how, and he is right.
He got a phone last week and i have to say.. "It is in a different league with the iPhone"
Now i have to order another one for myself. Hope it will arrive soon ^^
Sorry but you are not right
By the way - the iPhone is indeed better because of the better OS
But also the HF Screen has not such a good contrast and has moires from different view angles ...
when you work for some days with the HD the iPhone screen shows pixels.
The HD screnn with th perfect resolution is much smoother
The HTC Touchflow SW is after a long time on devices quite fast ans very good ( not as good as iPhone OS ) - the only lag is that many functions are missing and HTC does not offer updates regularly to older devices.
annoying & ridiculous...
sorry ... BUT it really IS annoying to read so many threads where people are just complaining that the HD 'doesnt meet this and that and...' - whats the use in it ?! Everyone needs different things in a device, you wouldn't want my kind of shoes or trousers or car or whatever!!
So I don't give a s*** what anybody else has to say about the HD - I tested it for MYSELF, I found it to be excellent for me, I bought it two weeks ago, I do lots of flatrate-HSDPA'ing, business use 12 hours/day, permanent exchange sncy'ing, blablabla...my HD truely rocks. Simply said: theres nothing *I* miss - if you do, buy something you like.
First of all. Thanks for the feedback so far. I'm sorry that some of you seem to be overly defensive. What I am trying to get to the bottom of is that my short experience of the HD is at odds with the many many reviews of the HD on the web.
There are endless comparsions with the iPhone but I don't recall any mentioning the screen being not as bright or that the HD has a very "laggy" interface. The point is that the reviews hold up the iphone as the benchmark and generally give the impression that the HD is close in terms of touch sensitivity and better in terms of screen. I was therefore surprised when i got my hands on a unit to not get that impression in those areas. I am aware of the fact that the Iphone can't multi-task, has no FM radio, has locked down applications, video recording problems, poor support for MS office attachments etc etc. So I'm not that interested in it - its too restricted for me!
So what I'm trying to understand is why my, albeit, short experience is different.
So the questions remains guys.
Can you load a theme or change a setting to change the way the screen looks ?
(EagleSteve - I'm just reading that 49 page thread you refered to and I note the äuthor of the thread states - "I think Touchflo is just too "black" for me, not sure if it will run with a brighter skin or not, but I like the way PocketPlus makes a device look, much brighter" - So that suggests a possible fix to my concern of the screen being not as bright as I expected)
Is the lack of hardware buttons actually a problem or does the large touch screen make it a non issue in practice?
Do you have laggy behaviour ? Is there some App or setting which everyone loads to get rid of the "laggy" behaviour? For the me the real show-stopper is probably the laggy behaviour - I need to know how much of a problem it is in practice.
Thanks for the feedback
I don't know... my unit isn't laggy at all, tflo is flying, the only issue I have is about video playback. But this is going to be solved with the next CorePlayer release, I hope.

The laggy behaviour obviously depends on what ROM you have.
I for myself do not experience lags on my device.

What about iPhone? 1 lonely button is that enuff for u?
sigh..
Hi Owen,
Well I'm not a HD user, I actually have a raphael. but my experience with this device was similar to yours when I first got it. In my experience my device was very laggy to start with. I ended up downloading a ROM and the speed is beautiful, I'm sure the HD will have the same and when this device is around as long as the raphael you will have some amazing ROMs if you already don't. Although it does frustrate me that our performance issues have to be solve by personal developers (who by the way do a marvellous job). So if you are happy flashing a ROM you will certainly get to a point you are happy with in regards to performance. it may however take you some time to do so
In regards to the button aspect, which was going to be my primary focus, the raphael has a few more buttons and a scroll wheel device. Having the extra buttons is frustrating, I have only had minimal (if any) use for them and only feel like they take up room on the device. If you are happy to not have a keyboard I wouldn't be too concerned on the lack of buttons.
Cheers

I bought the HD because I was sure it was the right device to answer my needs. One month after I'm still convinced it was a good choice.
But I'm even more convinced that there's just no interest in trying to convince other users that my phone is the one they need.
A consequence is the following: I'm not interested in being convinced that the HD was not good enough for me
The Touch HD has a very bright screen. Did you alter the settings, to turn off automatic backlight?
I don't find my HD laggy at all especially with the tweak that optimises the cache. Even out of the box I didn't find the HD laggy. Afterall it's only a phone and not your desktop PC...
Screen looks nice enough in my opinion. I can't convince you that it isn't over rated as after having one for a few weeks I feel it is nothing special.
For the people that say there is no point complaining, this is true if you don't own one I suppose. Although if a person did buy one because of the hype and it doesn't live up to it then I think they have every right to say why they feel they don't like it. I spent 500 quid on mine and I should be able to criticise things about it I don't like at that point.
If a person is happy with his device that's great but others that don't share that feeling are entitled to their views too.
Like I said, each has his own need and preference, so I can only summarise for you who iphone is not worthy of comparison to hd from my viewpoint only.
1. I like the hd screen and not iphone screen: because HD screen has the right level of sensitivity and supports stylus. Stylus is a critical requirements not only it is more user friendly to me, but also because it supports hand writing. Screen brightness of HD is completely adequate under bright sunlight.
2. I need availability of tomtom or similar software. Iphone does not have an acceptable navigation software.
3 I need desktop class word, spreadsheet, and presentation editing software, which iphone doesn't have.
4.I need better software keyboard than that iphone offer and winmo platform offers that.
5.I cannot live with iphone's battery design because I'd been stuck without battery. I do not want the bulk of a mobile charger.
6. the breath and depth of software in iphone is still not there yet.
7. I prefer HD's bigger screen.
8. I like having more buttons in HD rather than just one in iphone.
9. I like being able to customise. You don't like black? No problem. Use something like spb mobile shell, or change the skin and background of tf3d.
10.I like to have lots of choices when come to firmware or ROM. You don't have that with iphone. The ability to improve is very limited.
11.I like FM radio, I like cut and paste, I like all the little things which HD can do and iphone can't.
I like the build quality of iphone. I like it's browser. I like it's smoothness in displaying web pages more than Opera mobile. I like its multimedia capability.
I almost got an iphone.
For me, iphone is a very sexy women, and the temptation to marry her is great. But if I want someone who can manage the household, bring up the kids well, wise with finance, and kind to people, HD is the plain Jane whom can deliver.

Is the HD2/Leo for me?

Hi,
I currently have the iphone 3G, but am soon due for an upgrade and considering the HD2. I must say that I love the iphone, I think it works flawlessly. The obvious choice for an upgrade would be the 3GS, but there is just not enough difference from the 3G to warrant me spending over £200 upgrading to it.
After searching around I came across the HD2, and I must say it looks an awesome phone. My concerns though are that I might be disappointed coming from the iphone and wanted some honest opinions. In an ideal world I'd go and have a play with a HD2 in store, but everywhere's sold out and I can only get in from the online store.
One of the major things I like about the iphone is the touchscreen, it is truly a wonder. I have not come across a touchscreen yet that comes anywhere close to the iphones as far as fluidity, responsiveness, and its ability to do just what I want it to. No pressing the wrong link on the internet, no having to tap an icon again as the screen didn't pick up on my touch the first time etc. I know this is a HTC forum so opinions will be biased, but it the screen as good as the iphones? I've used the HTC touch diamond in the past and thought it was appalling.
How quick is it. I know it has a 1GHz processor etc, but what does that mean in the real world? For example, if I want to open an app or program is there any delay or does it open instantly?
I've looked at some videos on you tube and when people use the menu slider on the bottom they always hslide it across to get to the function that they require rather than just tapping the icon they want to use as there are a few on the display at any one tie. Is that just preference or can't you tap directly on the icon?
From reading other threads on problems with the HD2 it seems as though a lot can be fixed using cabs, what are these?
How are text messages displayed, do they come in conversation style as on the iphone, or as individual messages? I've read a lot about problems with the SMS on the HD2, what are these problems and is it something that is likely to be recified in the near future?
Can you customise ringtones and message alerts? I know it's not a biggie but one thing that really annoys me with the iphone is the crappy message alert tones that come with it, and then the fact that you can't use your own.
Cheers
From your words about your requirements & expectations, it's better for u to go with iPhone3GS.
Iam afraid HD2 has its own plus points but not in those areas you prefer.

OK, we have to differentiate a bit here.
The hardware of the touchscreen is the same. It's not the resistive technology they used before, e.g. in the Diamond, but the capacitive touch technology that's also used in the iPhone.
That means: The touchscreen is just as responsive, doesn't require pressure, has the same high quality feel and doesn't allow for fingernail/stylus input - same as the iPhone.
The software is different, and this is a bit hard to explain:
On one hand, Windows Mobile runs very very fast on the 1GHz Snapdragon processor. Most of the time, it's as fast or even faster than the iPhone 3GS.
But, at times, it is not as fluid, because there are no 'beautiful' animations and sometimes, things can get laggy. However, with the ultra fast processor, this happens very rarely, compared to older WM devices.
Conclusion: I wouldn't claim that it's faster than an iPhone 3GS, because while it probably is faster most of the time, it may lag sometimes, depending on what you do with it (e.g. heavy multitasking),
However, it will definitely be MUCH faster than your current iPhone 3G.
How quick is it. I know it has a 1GHz processor etc, but what does that mean in the real world? For example, if I want to open an app or program is there any delay or does it open instantly?

I think I've explained this above. To sum it up: It's fast. VERY fast. Almost everything opens instantly, like on an iPhone 3GS or even faster.
I've looked at some videos on you tube and when people use the menu slider on the bottom they always hslide it across to get to the function that they require rather than just tapping the icon they want to use as there are a few on the display at any one tie. You CAN tap directly on an icon.
Of course, you don't see al icons, just those who are located next to the tab you are in. But you can create your own shortcots for each tab, e.g. you can create a shortcut to the music tab on the homescreen if you don't like sliding across to get to the music tab.

.cabs are the equivalent to installers on Windows. You copy them to your phone (or download them directly from your phone) and open them to install them.
When someone finds a fix/tweak, he often creates a .cab and makes it available here on the forum, so that other people can easily apply the fix/tweak to their phones as well.
If you buy/download applications, they also come as .cab files.

Conversation style, as well as within people's contact cards, so that you can easily see all the conversation you had with someone (SMS, mail, calls, ...)

Some people have trouble sending SMS. The SMS just remain in the outbox and don't get sent. Some also can't receive SMS.
HTC is working on a fix and it should be provided with a ROM upgrade, soon.
In the meantime, disabling HTC Messaging is a possible workaround (among others that may or may not work).

Yes.
It's a Windows Mobile phone, which means you can customise pretty much anything.

I think I agree with this... From what I understand the iphone keyboard is (a bit) better although it's still personal preference, the htc screen is great but has it's quirks... I still misclick every now and then. About the icons, you can click those visible directly but by sliding you also reach the ones just outside the screen. Sliding is also more fancy looking of course
It's fast, at least for a winmo device. Apps open quickly but it also depends on how heavy the app is (tomtom for example, it doesn't open instantly but still very fast... especially compared to touch pro).
It's heavily customizable, using cabs amongst others. Cabs are simply some sort of installation files. You usually put them on your phone (memory card) and run them to install applications, apply changes to registry, etc. Ringtones can be set to whatever you want. Without cabs.
If you're totally fond of the iphone I don't know if the HD2 is for you. It's fine as it is but you have to like tweaking and playing around with it imo, especially to reach it's full potential.

The screen is great. Really. It's capacitive, so the feeling is closer to what you get from an iphone than what you got from any previous winmo phone. It may be a tiny bit less responsive than an iphone.

It's really fast. Most of the apps open instantly, the biggest ones will of course need a few seconds.

You can tap it, but the slider doesn't show all of the icons, so you'll have to slide it to reach some of them. You can however change the order to access your favourite ones with one tap.

Conversation style, but no comic bubbles. There are two main problems. First one is a huge lag when opening conversations with lots of messages. The second one is that when you want to send a message, it will sometimes take a few hours before it's actually sent. I personally never experienced the second one, however.

snerkler : I would recommend you to check this review
http://pocketnow.com/hardware-1/another-spin-on-the-htc-hd2
and second part
http://pocketnow.com/software-1/another-spin-on-the-htc-hd2-part-2
Some general thoughts, in addition to my answer above:
The hardware of the HD2 is better, hands down. However, the software is quite different. I think none of the operating systems, Windows Mobile or iPhone OS, is better or worse, but they are very different and have very different strenghts and weaknesses.
I can give you some thoughts that may help you decide:
The iPhone is very easy to use, fluid and most of the time, 'just works'. However, this comes at a price: It is also very limited, in order to achieve its ease of use.
As long as you don't reach the limits, you're fine.
But when you reach the limits
(e.g. you want to have information on the home screen, you want to multitask, send something via Bluetooth, use it as USB storage, costumise ringtones and so on...)
then things get complicated on the iPhone. You either can't do something at all, or you need to hack/jailbreak it or find workarounds for the shortcomings.
With Windows Mobile, you get everything out of the box. It can do pretty much everything and has all the basic and advanced features that the iPhone lacks.
However, just like the iPhone's ease of use, Windows Mobile's feature-richness comes at a price as well: It definitely is more complicated and doesn't always work instantly, if you want to install/change something.
Sense tries to make the basic things as easy to use as on the iPhone, and I have to say it does that quite well. But it's still not THAT easy.
On the other hand, if you want to go beyond the limits that Apple set on the iPhone, things often get MUCH more complicated than they are on Windows Mobile.
Conclusion:
If you don't reach the limits of your iPhone, i.e. if you're not missing anything that the iPhone can't do, then it will probably the better device for you, because then it's more easy to use and 'just works' for you.
If, however, you miss a bunch of features and you try to work around them on the iPhone (e.g. by jailbreaking it), then a Windows Mobile device, particulary the HTC HD2, is probably the better choice, because though not everything is as easy, you get everything out of the box. And you also get the better hardware.
The HTC HD2 also has a special place among the Windows Phones. Sense/TouchFlo has evolved over time and now the basic things (i.e. everything that the iPhone can do) are almost as easy on the HD2.
There are still exceptions, like installing software, but it has come so close that I
personally think that the HD2 is the better choice for almost everyone, except for those who really never reach the limits of the iPhone.
Because, for giving up a bit of ease of use, you get tons of additional features, as well as the better hardware:
- 4.3" screen, much better camera, faster processor, more RAM...
- multitasking
- maximum customizability
- no iTunes required, you can connect it as storage device
- file explorer
- better notifications concept
- more professional, customizable home screen
- Bluetooth file transfers
- good Emulators like Morphgear
- and much more
Whether this is enough to make you accept the loss of ease of use compared to the iPhone is your choice.
Previously, the gap in ease of use has been much greater, that means you had to sacrifice a lot more in order to get all the features of Windows Mobile, but with the HD2 HTC has come so close that I think it's really the better choice for lots of people now.
However, everyone still has to decide for him/herself. I hope I could help.
IMO For your needs go with the 3GS mate.
Ive had all the iphones 2g, 3g and 3gs. The 3gs is much better then the 3g. For me...i started to hate the iphone for is ONE Dimensionalness (is that a word) I wanted somehting more and that was the HD2. Personally I hate the iphone. So my opinon is basised... ive been with it it since 2007 and trust me the HD2 is pure joy. I agree with others on this forum and If I were you I would get the 3GS is a much better device then your crappy 3G.
Thanks for all the replies. The HTC does sound more and more interesting. I know I said I like how the iphone just works, but I am feeling like I need a new challenge. What I meant about the iphone 'just working' is not necessarily that it is easy to use and everything is straight forward, but more the interface I guess. The way that you navigate around the touchscreen. I am a bit of a gadget freak and do like playing around with stuff, which is why I've been looking at the HD2. I am finally feeling left wanting a bit more with the iphone now. I've gone through all the free apps etc, and while some are great fun initially, I never use them anymore. I play solitaire now more than anything else. I need something a bit more taxing, like I said, a new challenge
If the touchscreen is up there with the iphone then maybe I need to give this phone some serious consideration.
Just out of curiosity is the problem sending SMS on a particular network or any network?

I don't have sms problems with any of the ROMs I have used for HD2.
From default 1.43 to latest 1.61 turkey ROM.
So, it seems to vs certain operator specific.
Check in the sms issue thread for any user from your country/operator and see.

I've been through all the iphones as well (2g, 3g, 3gs, and got 3gs for many family members including the wifey). The 3GS is a MUCH better device than the 3G and worth the upgrade in my opinion simply because the speed just makes it feel more fluid.
In the same way the HD2 makes WinMo actually feel usable and more enjoyable to use (especially with touchflo), but it's not a little faster as the 3GS is to the 3G... it's a LOT faster. That's just because the old WinMo phones are slow (my last was the Touch HD), but I wouldn't say it's REALLY fast as some of the reviews do... it's just very usable now. However, I'm comfortable with the WinMo OS so the HD2 is a joy to use for me.
Hardware wise, my wife picked up my HD2 when I got it and wanted to play with it since I couldn't stop talking about it for weeks until I finally got one. she LOVED the hardware, and being a non-geek (fashion background) I was surprised when she started commenting on the build quality and she compared it to her iPhone 3GS similar to our new new LED backlit LCD TV vs. our old SD tube television!
She really enjoyed playing with it for a while and going through the tabs in touchflo and thought it was BETTER than her iPhone. Then she moved to the audio player tab... which crashed on her. Disappointed, she continued onwards as she really liked the phone. Then she moved to the settings tab. She looked at it for a few seconds... put down the phone and decided to continue using her iPhone instead.
Even though we've been in 3 countries since I got it, it's automatically set itself up and I've had data access in every country... where her iPhone can't even be set-up to use the network data (needs proxy settings in APN), I've been able to tether, create adhoc networks, take much better pics, read pdfs more clearly, keep up with my tweets, modify excel spreadsheets, review powerpoints, watch television shows downloaded from the net, etc... she decided the iphone was better for her since she didn't have to look at settings and it easily synced to her MacBook so she could show off her pics to family, and as you said... it just works.
She also loves her MacBook and I love my Thinkpad.

Ha ha ha, that's brilliant! That to me really sums up why the iphone is the better choice for some people and why the HD2 is the best for others. I love being able to fiddle with settings and customise and change things which is why I will get the HD2 and would never consider the iphone, as good as it is at the things it can do.

Same here, not that I usually keep as many, but I intentionally kept about 300 SMSs to test this problem and there is a minor few milliseconds slowdown, but nothing you'd really notice. I also use the FPU enabler, not sure if that makes a difference to SMS though.
Incidentally I don't have any other problems with my phone, works 100% since unboxing.

Why we love our HD2? Guys, share with me

These days, I've seen way too many threads like "Goodbye HD2, hello Iphone", "Htc Hd2 bye bye" or "Wtf with this phone". I cant stand it. So I want to have a praise thread for our HD2, our beloved and best one, also want to share my opinions on the HD2 and Winmo generally for everyone to see and think.
Here are some type of opinions quite popular these days:
"Windows mobile 6.5 is a dead os for lack of a better term and also know that the development for apps for it is going to taper and die off at some point"
"HD2 is too buggy, laggy, errors"
"Winmo is a waste for HD2"
"Where are the games and apps?"
"Not work out of the box?"
To answer, first of all, I dont care about apps that Iphone or Android has.
I dont play games much now so that's a second point. Although they do have some very interesting like Tunewiki or Layar, that's the only thing I miss from my old 3GS and Hero. And if u paid so many money for games on iphone, why dont paid a 5 Euro more for Fpsece, to have the best experience about PS1 games on a mobile device so far.
Secondly, about basic apps, Winmo wins.
For videos: I dont have to spend hours to find a good convert program and hours to config and wait for the converted file to transfer to my phone, Coreplayer and TCPMP serve them right.
For ebooks: the most popular format is prc, Mobipocket reader wins again, I dont have to convert either.
For office: what can win over office mobile, please show me, I have no idea about this.
And u know what, Winmo has these basic things and apps for free!!!
Third, the true multitask:
Winmo has been a winner since the start. I agree that Iphone can be jailbreak then install e.g Proswitcher, but that's not so convenient like Winmo. The basic thing about Android is it never really closes an app, keeping it running in the background for quick response, but that only makes Android become slower and laggy just like Winmo. But for convenient, and with a power specs like HD2, it's so great in terms of multitask for me.
Fourth, the screen:
HD2 has a great and super beautiful 4.3 inch screen. I can never go back to a 3.2 (Hero) or 3.5(Iphone) now, I will consider for a 3.7 one. Watching photos, videos, viewing documents, surfing. It's superb with HD2. And please dont expect a device with great screen like that to have a good battery life. More than a day with normal usage is so enough. I got 1.5 days or even more than 2 days with my HD2.
Fifth, and the best one imo, CUSTOMIZATIONS
Winmo is the best world for customizations, for devs and chefs. It got history, and it's truly popular, right? I love to tweak my phone, customize it the way I one, change every weeks or even every days, so I cannot get bored with it. And look at this forum, so many manila mods have been built and definitely going on and on. From maxmanilla, cookie home tabs, GTX, all are wonderful and amazing. I cant thank them and all the chefs here enough.
Now, look at Iphone, what can u do with this easy to get bored home screen, except for changing icons?
And even android, it's not easy to customize it without rooting. And things to customize so far? Not much, I see.
For all that has errors, bugs, laggy, I think it's just u to make the phone like that, not the phone itself (if it's not a defective one). Too many report shows the phone works out of the box, count me in for that. I went with stock rom for a month at first with nothing went wrong.
Winmo to me is never a dead OS like it seems now. It's still growing strong in the world thanks to xda, yes, xda is the one that makes it strong, imo. We love to tweak, we love to customize, we love to share our knowledge and stuffs, so we are here. If u just dont feel like to tweak, u better not be here, xda is not some place where u can just complain and complain everyday for ur own faults.
Finally, HD2 is not a waste to me to run Winmo, it's best with Winmo.
Whew, my longest post so far. Guys, dont leave me alone, come and praise our HD2, I know u will.
List the best things u ever had with HD2 and show the world
P.S: it's just my opinion, but we all have private and personal purposes for using mobile in our life, so that we have personal choices on mobile, so please dont flame on me so hard, haha
1. big screen - can see web pages better than my x1a 3" screen
2. software options (still compatible with the software i use on my old phone) tomtom 7 - no need to have a data connection to use gps, slick im - use this when im on the move, option of using several different types of web browsers (ie, opera, opera mini, skyfire)
3. phone is unlocked and can use it as a prepaid phone.
Exactly mate, should have mentioned the chasing game between apple and devs, it's really annoying sometimes. And the price for an unlock iphone is really ridiculous.
You know, I have both the Nexus one and HD2, but I am really thinking of selling my HD2. I love all the things you have mentioned, but texting is kind of a big deal to me. With an HD2, the keyboard so choppy, no matter the rom I try. If I can somehow fix it, bye bye nexus. If not, well...
Just thinking would there be a phone that has a screen larger than 4.3" in the future or this is the biggest already? By the way 4.3" wide is a common size for GPS device.

The athena had a 5inch screen.... but you couldn't use it as a regular handset. You needed to use either bluetooth headsets or speakerphone. It was a cool phone, though.

I agree with everything you guys said, except texting prob, I use swype, love it!! By far best phone I've ever had!! Just added, msvc, love it, just made perfect, better!!
My main reason for choosing HD2 over iphone or android devices is privacy!

exactly my thoughts.
I love it because the great hardware I saw this as a newstep after the qualcomm 528 mhz. Wich was used for 3 or more years. This was a newstep for 2 years this will be a fast phone. And the freedom of windows mobile is also great.
Simply the best phone I ever had! Does everything I need and more!
I love my HD2 because it's big, it's strong, it's fast and give me the possibility to customize everything like I want.
I love my HD2 even because makes me different from all the mass of sheeps that walk around with an Iphone and use their phono to simulate a beer drinking and s**t like this.
Having an HD2, like my good old HTC Topaz, makes me feel different and like a pro.
I have always been a win mobile user. love the ability to anything! can send files bluetooth, COMPLETELY change the theme of the phone, and modify the software ANY way you see fit. suck on that iphone.
The only thing I would change would be camera hardware button
They say the HD2 will be the last in windows mobile 6.5. what a way to go out with a bang!!!
windows mobile+huge screen+fast processor= one sick device
I could probably be classified as a (very) dull business user and I have never before cared over what device was put into my hands..
I have used SE, Nokia, HTC, you name it, and even a iPhone for a while, and all worked okay and I did type an occasional e-mail on them but in reality they all fell short, some with clunky e-mail integration other with unsuitable screens for reading long texts.
With the HD2 I have hit "home", I have become truly freed from my office - I can access and work with my e-mails, read trough and review extensive attachment, surf the web, get online with my laptop without hassle trough the WiFi router. First phone I ever used that work seamless with bluetooth both in the car and with headsets.
It's a serious device and not a toy with downloaded flashlight applications.

These are the things that I never bother or want to do with my old 3GS and Hero
Hi,
I like:
1) Screen (come on 4.3 inch MAMA MYA that’s nice step for mobile phones. I will never buy IPhone 4G if it’s less than 4.3 inch screen)
2) Design (Very slim very sexy)
3) Speed (yeah it’s really speedy)
4) Freedom (WOW the best thing. No more F jailbreak)
I don't like:
1) SMS messaging interface (Please anyone know other messaging interfaces? or at least to tell me how to disable the loading of messages as once. I rather like IPhone messaging where it loads small amount of sms in the chat area and load more history sms on request if needed)
2) Battery life (To bad to be in such great device)

I always have over 400 sms in my inbox, and it loads quite quickly, I think. No problem for me. Why dont u try the old style thread messaging from Energy rom or some other roms?
Thank you for starting this post. I was reluctant to upgrade from my Touch Pro to the HD2 for the lack of a hardware keyboard, which I used constantly. The big, beautiful screen won me over and I'm happy to report that I'm typing as fast as ever now that I'm used to my HD2.
I love the huge screen, HTC Sense (Thanks to Cookie and averyone else, not enough room in this thread), one touch dialing, programs etc, etc.
Every, and I mean EVERY challenge that I had with my phone when I first bought it has been solved by using these forums.
Every, and I mean EVERY modification that I could have dreamed of has been supplied by using these forums.
This has been the case since I started using WinMo and with every device I've owned.
These sour grapes posts by individuals who refuse to take the time to use this fine provision in order to make full use of their HD2 are a slap in the face to the hardworking developers who have brought countless hours of joy to the rest of us who deeply appreciate their work.
To the developers and contributors of this forum: I salute you.
To the individuals who are posting their "Bye, Bye" threads. Please leave quietly, and don't let the door hit you in the iphone.
Oh finally some positive thread for HD2.
So what i love about my HD2.
Speed - lighting fast
Customization - Thanks Winmo 6.5
Usefull Programs - Programs that really matters. Like Resco explorer and image viewer, FPSEce,iGO with multitouch and compass
BIG screen - The Biggest!
Open platform (flashing ROMs) - Can be really fun
Loud speakers - Well maybe too much =)
Capacitive screen with multitouch - Say yes to best gaming experience
How the phone feels in pocket (comfortable) - You dont even know it's in your pocket
But there are few bad things =(
Development - The newest games looks like ripped of java with touch support
Really old core of OS - Winmo 6.5 is quite ugly too
Reset button under Battery cover - lol at this one

7 reasons why move to WP7

Wondering what is the point of this thread? Well, simple. It is because of the fact, that many people have no idea what is Windows Phone 7 all about, and don't even know what they are missing. So these are the most important things why I don't use Android (nor WM) on my HD2 anymore.
1. Lighting fast booting.
There is no stock OS in the world which would be able to turn on the phone in less then 20 seconds. WP is.
2. Lighting fast reactions
There is no stock OS in the world with so snappy reactions. Never scrolled through my apps this fast.
3. Fastest gaming
WP7 gives you ability to play games with higher FPS compared to Android builds. Plus with the newest NoDo update for WP7 you can say good bye to the loading bar, because of the whole new way to load apps which actually makes loading time around 100% faster. See video:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5rmv6rfrW-4&feature=related
4. Ability to record 720p videos
There is no other OS that gives you ability to record HD videos on your HD2, yet.
5. No more accidental making/answering phonecalls
Did your friends ever ***** that you were calling them, but didn't actually say anything, but you would swear you didn't call? Well, that's because the only thing that is neccesary to answer a phonecall is just to press the "green" button, and to make one, all you have to do is with unlocked screen press the button twice (altough it sounds impossible to turn on the screen and make phonecall all itself, it actually happened to me like 10 times. Not okay.) With the WP7, pressing that button won't do anything (it is linked to camera button). To answer the call you need to slide with your finger up, plus tap the little answer button in the middle of the screen (not at the bottom).
6. Things simply WORK
The WP7 is not like anything you ever seen, it simply works, no matter what are you doing, no restarts, no freezes. And despite it is relatively still in its early stages it has almost no bugs.
7. Modern look and feel
Looking at the home screen is like being in the gallery of art. It is so simple, that it is actually beautiful.
I can guarantee that after 2 days with this OS you are going to fall in love with it as much as i did. But always make sure you backed up your SD Card before switching to the wp, I didn't
Not trying to down play your enthusiasm for the new WP7 OS but I got my first hands on experience with a HTC Surround last night and all of what you said is true. I still found the OS lacking in a couple of areas, all of which are just personal issues. But the biggest issue I have with it not having multitasking is a very big deal breaker for me. But the OS is very smooth and sleek. I do think it is more of a OS for the masses and not for tweakers and moders like other OSs. Also I think it is very much focused on social networking and not business support or actual smartphone functionality. Just my opinion, glad you like your phone man.
I enjoyed my time with it.
Used it for about 2 1/2 months, but ultimately went back to Android for the selection of apps and the many variations of Android available for the HD2.
One thing about the WP7 ROM that frustrated me was the constant camera shots of the inside of my pocket... Can't tell you how many times that thing went off because the Green "Phone" button was held down by me sitting or something.
I may go back to it once multitasking is added and better apps become available.

it's an excellent OS and will definitely appeal to the masses. However it just won't appeal to people like me. Some people want more than something that simply looks good and works.

1) Actually with the newer HTC Android phones (or if you run any Sense 2.0 ROM on an HTC phone), you can hibernate instead of fully shutting down and be up in less than 10 seconds.
2) That's because Google doesn't turn on hardware acceleration for the UI, but I believe Samsung's Galaxy S phones have it enabled.
3) Faster gaming because all WP7 phones out now use the same Snapdragon processor (even the Samsung Focus), so it's easier to develop games for one piece of hardware. Think iPhone.
4) That's not really a reason to switch to a different OS, but ok, I'll give you that.
The last 3 reasons are mainly aesthetics. Basically it depends on what you want to do; If you want things that "just work", go use WP7 or grab an iPhone. If you want to tinker and customize things, use Android. It's true, I've tried WP7 and it definitely is slick. I did get sick of the UI in a lot of apps, but it is a nice OS overall. However, in my case I like to tinker and that's why I use Android. I like that I can have different launchers. I like that, if I don't want to put my app up on the market, I can offer it somewhere else. I like that I'm not tied to desktop software.
Again, it's a nice OS, but not for everyday use for me. If I didn't care about tinkering with my phone and all I did was message people and talk on the phone, I'd probably grab a Blackberry Bold.
looks good is 1 thing
there are alot of other things which MUST work and MUST have
and WP7 is lacking at those areas, yet
believe it requires more enhancement (iOS took 2 years+) and hope Microsoft does something similiar, thought they are taking ages
WP7 is lacking at those areas?

+1 It is a shame the greatest device made to date is the last personal PDA/phone device that will ever have Widows Mobile as an operating system. All hail to Windows Mobile for showing the world what a mobile OS was suppose to be like and function like. Windows Mobile gives one the sense of true mobile computing in the palm of your hand.
tried wp7 for a maximum of 3 days, if i put together all the time spent using it. Personally.. i don't like it.
1. the feeling that a power user gets while using it. I don't feel like i'm using the phone, it's more like i'm tricking the phone to do what i want. i don't need zune crap, i don't neet default non customizable home screens, i need more functionality, i need a file explorer, i need usb storage, hell yeah.. i need a real wallpaper. I can get some of that.. but i got to hack the phone...
2. apple like sloppy market place. No, it's not about the few apps available (more will come). But if i want to install my own apps, if i simply download them from the pc and want to transfer, if i try some home cooked simple apps etc.. damn again.. i got to hack the phone first
3. Feels smoth and fast? Not enough for me. I want more then that. I have a 1ghz processor, some ****load of ram and 4.3 inch of screen to display 2-3 pages of insipid apps and that tom&jerry looking not customizable home screen. If i want simplicity and "things that simply work" i'll get an Iphone 3g and laugh at the face of MS that requires all that hardware components and about .. God knows how many years to develop some OS to do what my Iphone does with 1/3 resources. But i have the HD2, damn again.. i really want apps, i want functionality, i want to tweak the system.. but first i have to hack it
4. Nodo update brings us.. the glorified much awaited copy&paste functionality.. uaau, that's a feature.. windows ce 1.0 had it, my oldest casio organizer had it, wp7 receives it after an upgrade Guess we need a service pack to get usb mass storage or a better file explorer. also guessing i better start hacking the phone if i need them sooner.
5. Storage card policy. What's with the wacky 1 partition of nand+storage stuff or whatever MS is doing? Since i don't have usb mass storage i have to wait some awful amount of time to see thing copied via .. zune, because i don't have the possibility to use the memory card. I'm lucky hd2 has that slot, some wp7 phones don't have it, at least. They must be hacked first.
6. Multitasking... is there a hack for that?
7. i don't really need the "operating system of tomorrow" i first have to live today.
Thanks for your opinions. As you said it is not a OS for power users but for the masses. I am not a power user, all I want is clean, smooth and user friendly ui which works fast no matter what. And if the WP7 would be out for 4 years like your beloved iOS it would be like 4 times better than that in my opinion (by the way, its strict rules about no-usb mass storage and all that Zune thing is very similar to the Apple's iTunes, don't you think?). But seriously, what is all the tweaking and customizing for? If you want to play, just go out and buy a PSP or something, this is a phone which is supposed to work fast, and do what you need it to. Call me old-fashioned but that's simply what I think.
used android for 4 months, then dual booted wp7 and android for another 2 months...but iam back now to wm6.5...(dual booting with android on sd of course .)....nothing beats it....iam a doc and need my medical software apart from the other great "useful" software from 6.5
Fair point about WM7 not being as mature as iOS, but the simple fact is, that it's not 2007 anymore. MS doesn't have 4 years to bring its system up to date, coz Apple and Google are not going to stand still and wait for them. And looking at the speed MS is relasing the updates - it might be not 4 years, but unfortunately a lot longer.
As for your question about the need for customization, just listen to this: I've bought myself a Htc Desire HD, and as you probably know it takes quite a while for the manufactures to update its handsets to the latest versions of Android. But thanks to Rom developers my phone is running the latest system, with a lot customizations and tweaks, minus all the bloatware. In effect battery life is exceptionally better, the mobile is so much faster, and everything just works.
Never the less, the best thing out of all of that, is the choice we got from competition - so lets hope Android, iOS and WM7 will all prevail, because at the end of the day, as we're all different, the more choice we've got - the better for all of us.

I have 2 reasons why WP7 isnt good for me.
1. Battery life. I havent tested the NoDo update, but the ROM I tested could barely hold one day of moderate usage.
2. Live services. Microsoft doesnt have a good partner in my country, so i cant get an activation code for the Marketplace, so the phone is mostly useless to me.
However, if any of you is willing to call MS in their country and get me and activation code, I would give a shot to this OS and eternal gratitude to the person which gets me the code.

+1 I got your point. But the thing is, that WP is just good out of the box, with this OS there is no need to tweak or customize anything, coz it works perfectly fast and looks beautiful. Maybe my requirements for a good OS are kinda low, but this OS has everything I was looking for. I use my phone primarily for calling/texting and occasionally music/movies while traveling. All I am saying is, that WP7 is perfectly suited for an average user. Every OS has its own spell and every OS is suited for somebody else. Thank god for our HD2s that are giving us ability to use which one we like the most.
Yea, things simply work when there's not much there in the first place. It's like saying how a toddler's tricycle "simply works" compare to an advanced automobile with powerful computers/ECU and a crapload of mechanical parts. Both is a viable mode of transportation, but guess which one I'm favoring for?
As said some people want something more than something that just works. Even if it works great. People want to explore, try out, maybe do the impossible. Look at it like this, if it weren't for the tweaking/customizing/hacking, WP7, let alone android, would never have reached our HD2's. But as said again you only want something that works, and its your opinion, and that's good. But cuz of the hacking and modding you found the next type of phone you want to get next, a WP7 phone.
I'm not saying you should go on tweaking or customizing or whatever, just don't go around and say, "But seriously, what is all the tweaking and customizing for? If you want to play, just go out and buy a PSP or something, this is a phone which is supposed to work fast, and do what you need it to." cuz it makes you sound as if you aren't grateful at all, and that you're sounding like verizon/motorola, use it as it is, which we tweakers object to.
Note, again, hacking mobile phones/devices came long before the PSP even came out., and that time, people enjoyed it also.
Hey OP, have you done alot of web browsing on WP7? It is absolutely painful: poor rendering, sloooow, and no flash! This reason alone is enough for many non-tech users to avoid WP7 for now. On Android we get almost the entire web rendered as it should be. In addition, Android just works, even ported on an HD2. Plus, you can use the OS as is or you can explore multiple layers of customization and hacking. It's the best of both worlds.
Android is better in every respect than Windows 7 and iPhone, the facts speak for themselves people are turning to Android int he droves.
