[Q] Help with ROM Problems and question about sd card - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok here is my situation: my phone is rooted and the rom installed is CM alpha build 51. somewhere along the line i think i messed up something and now im unable to backup the current rom w/ CWM to flash a new build/rom etc. when i try to backup current rom is restarts into recovery and when i try to backup there it says that its unable to mount system. Clockwork Mod version 3.0.0.7 but in recovery mode it says 2.5.1.2 and when i try to flash a later version it just stays on 2.5.1.2. anyways
Q1. Anyone have a solution for this ?
if not
Q2. should i flash back to my original recovery and flash up again ?
Q3. What can i remove from the sd card ? its getting kinda full. can i completely wipe it ? I want to completely wipe it and flash CM7.

You need to use clockwork 3 to backup any version of cm7. You need to fastboot flash that recovery back on, then make backup, then flash 2.5.1.2, then restore 2.2 rom.
2.2 roms = CWM 2.5.x
2.3 roms = CWM 3.x

don't flash from the clockworkmod app... reboot the phone and hold the down volume to get into the bootloader. Then choose the flash a zip from sdcard. then find the zip and pick it... it's much easier... also you can do a nandroid backup before flashing... and you should do a factory reset/wipe before flashing usually.
oh i understand that i mean do i have to do a clockworkmod recovery every time i flash a new rom?
i cant just boot into recovery do a backup, wipe data, wipe cache, and install?

[Q] Help Please recovery problems rooted stock rom

Okay, so where to start...
I have a MT4G (of course) i love it dont get me wrongand wanted to mess around with it. i permarooted it via VISONary + and everything was working fine. i wanted to flash a different kernal and wanted to do a nandoird backup before i did anything else. but i needed clockwork to do this (correct me please if im wrong) so i downloaded rom manager flashed it. and went to boot into recovery and it does this icon with a phone and a "!" on the screen...it cant boot into recovery. and i dont know why, and now i just want to go back to my stock recovery but i cant cause i dont know how. ive tried terminal commands... and i tried to learn adb and fastboot but am very lost. basically i want a nandroid of my rooted stock ROM... any help would be much appreciated
The reason is because you need to turn s=off for any of those to work.

Read the guides.
1. The phone with the red triangle icon is from the stock Recovery program. Stock recovery does nothing except show you that screen, unless a special file is found on the SD card, used for a complete system restore. Your flash of ClockworkMod Recovery was unsuccessful.
2. When you do go get past the S=Off phase, and are ready to once again attempt to install CWM Recovery, be sure you install the CORRECT version. CWMR 3.0.0.5 is for Gingerbread (Android 2.3) based ROMs only! Don't install 3.0.0.5 expecting it to function properly for the Stock ROM, for Iced Glacier, or any other Froyo (Android 2.2) based ROMs. Those all require CWMR 2.x. A higher version number does not mean better. For example, if you are planning to install CM7, back up with CWMR 2.x, then flash CWMR 3.x before installing CM7.
(There is a special, unique to MT4G version of CWMR that handles both Froyo and Gingerbread ROMs, called "3.0.0.6". You can find threads on it in the Development subforum.)

Hi,root phone with this http://quick-upload.com/files/get/VCeDYoXyV3/1clickrootandclockworkmod3.0.0.5.rar
connect htc sync, press RootTattoo, then recovery tatttoo
Do you mean to say this is an application which roots the phone directly without me having to do anything ??? cz if so, i m a bit skeptical coz i have read things can go wrong in such cases.
waiting for more help plz
Hi harsh
u have to reinstall custom recovery
u can choose amon_ra. or clockwork 3.0.0.5/6/7
there is backup option
You should use CWM 3.0.0.5 for CM7, this is special for CM7 in Kalimo's thread:

Cyanogenmod 7 - Hanging at splash screen

I had an earlier version of cyanogenmod installed, I went into rom manager and pressed update (or something like that). It did the whole installation thing but now it's just hanging at the cyanogenmod splash screen.
What do?

Have you tried to boot into recovery ? (turning it on by pressing the power button and the - volume button)
Did you backup? Always, always backup.
If not try downloading the ROM and flashing that, don't wipe just yet, if that fails you will probably need to wipe and flash again.
ok so i did a recovery of the backup i did just before trying to install cyanogen 7
FFUUUUU.... now everything is pretty much lost! even the old cyanogen is gone. What can I do?!
Was your old backup from a pre 2.3 ROM?
^^ how can i tell?
sorry for being a noob
What was the ROM you backed up before flashing CM7?
the backup i did just before trying to install cyanogen 7

it was cyanogenmod 6.1.3
Ok, your problem now is that the file system changed from 2.2 (Froyo) to 2.3 (Gingerbread) and you will need to flash a new version of ClockworkMod Recovery to restore that backup.
Do you have ENG S-OFF? You will be able to flash it via fastboot, if not you will have to start again from CM7 and downgrade ClockworkMod Recovery from there, then restore your backup.
I flashed the latest ClockworkMod Recovery (3.0.0.6) - I think before I tried to install CM7.
Restoring the backup means almost everything is gone, apps, settings, etc (but not everything). Did I **** it up? Will I have to redo everything?
If I have to do that anyway I might as well use CM7, but installing that means the splash screen hangs (I had the same problem with CM6, I dont remember how I fixed it)
Your right, to flash CM7 you needed CWM 3.x.x.x
Restoring that backup 6.1.3 will take you back to pre-CM7 so yes everything will be gone.
Have you tried just flashing CM7 again?
ok, trying to install cm7 again...
Don't wipe just yet, if it still hangs after flashing again you will then have to wipe.
****, it's hanging at the CM7 splash screen again
Ok, you will need to perform a wipe.
In CWM you have "mounts & storage"
Format boot & system, then flash CM7 again, (btw which CM7 ROM are you flashing?)
I did that (through the recovery or w/e) and then it was hanging at the HTC logo....
I had to restore the backup once again and am back where I was before
What can I do?
btw it's CM 7.0.0-RC2
Ok sounds like a full wipe is needed.
Again in CWM "mounts and storage" format everything except scdard, then back out and go into "advanced" and wipe dalvik cache.
Flash CM7 again, it should work now.
can i flash CM7 through the recovery console? because if i wipe everything then obviously i cant boot back into it?
Don't worry you can't wipe recovery from within recovery, so after a full wipe it will still be available.
before I do that, how exactly do i install CM 7 from recovery console? I think it was downloaded to my SD card but I dont see a straight forward option in the recovery console

brick Nexus S

Hello. i am new to the android family
i have a nexus s GT-9020T
i have rooted my phone but without setting the clockworkmod reovery.
today i was playing with the rom manager and downloaded one of the rom from the list. after installation i was unable to start the phone only seeing the google logo with the unlock logo.
i went back into the recovery by typing flash recovery recovery.img etc.
run a restore and restart the phone but still not work
my nexus s is 2.3.4 by the way.
please assist
What "restore" did you run?
Go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056062
And download the full rom:
Model: i9020T
Full Rom: GRJ22, KD1
That'll revert your Nexus S to the latest completely stock 2.3.4
Then you can flash recovery again and go back to clockwork mod and go flash another rom or whatever.
Remember when you're flashing a new rom you need to wipe data and cache and dalvik cache.
i run an restore from the backup that i made before installing the new rom using clockwork mod recovery, its part of the option when installing the rom using the rom manager * click box - backup * etc something like that

Next time don't use Rom Manager to make backups or flash roms. It's stupid and can get you issues like you're having.
Anyways, try wiping data and cache then restoring the backup, do it in Clockwork Recovery.
Let it boot, first boot always takes a while, 5-10 minutes. If you see the boot animation freeze, stop and restart, then yeah it's screwed up, otherwise, just let it is.
If still not working from your backup, do what I said in previous reply, just restore to stock 2.3.4 then re flash clockwork mod and start over with the rom you want to flash.
thank your nxt. i have found the real problem. it was not my backup problem or the rom that u provided. it was the version of my clockwork mod recovery. i was using an 2.x.x.x to restore the phone which is why it doesn't work. everything work fine now after i flashed with an 3.x.x.x and restore the phone. one question thou, where can i always find the newest clockwork mod recovery release ? thank you very much

Or just use ROM Manager to get the latest.
That's the only thing I use ROM Manager for... getting the latest Recovery.
thanks again nxt. if you don't mind really ...i have one more question. i know the phone intend to uninstall clockwork mod recovery once its restarted. i know there is command type into the cmd to avoid the phone uninstall the clockworkmod reovery and make it permanent in another word. I didn't run those command when i root my phone because i don't know if its good to make it permanent like.... hmmm like if there will be a 2.3.5 coming next month..just saying ok... with a permanent unofficial recovery will cause a problem?

Are you running custom ROM? If you are, it's already made to not revert back to stock recovery. If you leave it stock recovery you'll get notifications for firmware updates by Google, but remember that applying those to a rooted phone might screw things up too.
the blue one is stock recovery right?
