[Q] Can not flash any update.zip - myTouch 3G, Magic General

I recently downgraded to 1.5 (was on froyo, rooted, hboot 1.33.0013 but got caught in endless boot loop when trying to flash custom rom). I am rooted (can run Titanium, Barnacle, etc.)
Now my new info is:
Sapphire PVT 32B S-On G
HBOOT - 1.33.0006
SAPP 30000
CPLD-10
Radio-2.22.19.261
May 27, 2009
My issue is that I am not able to upgrade now. I can not flash 1.6 or 2.2. I go into Android system recovery, tell it to apply update.zip from sd card and get the following error:
E: can't open /cache/recovery/command" installation aborted
(I have to use the Android system recovery utility because Clockwork Mod is not showing up in the market for me.)
I've tried to use an emulator but that is not working either.
Previously, when on 2.2 I could use adb but now I can't get it to see my device.
After a week of searching forums and trying different things I've found no solution.
How can I get back to Froyo (and stay rooted)?

You get that error after selecting the "update from update.zip" option?

I have to ask since you are from the US, does it have a 3.5 headphone jack on the top?

Hi Don Juan (feel like I know you from reading all your helpful posts to others!). Yes, that is the error I get after selecting the "update from update.zip" option? The android recovery system doesn't give me the option of just "install any zip" the way Clockwork does. I can't install Clockwork because it is not showing up in my market - only the paid updated version which I paid and downloaded but needs the free version to work!
Additional info: Received an OTA message to update last night and accepted. That failed as well - got hung up on the triangle exclamation point recovery screen and never moved on.
This morning I tried again and got the same error (E: can't open /cache/recovery/command" installation aborted). When I clicked on "details" it says, "java.util.zip.ZipException: expected End of Central Directory signature"
I googled that error message but didn't find anything applicable to my situation.
Any ideas?

Nope. I have the original. No headphone jack.

So the reason you couldn't get a custom ROM working from 2.2 is because you had the new radio. Either rate, have you re-rooted 1.5 using Universal Androot? As for clockwork mod, you should be looking for ROM Manager in the market. That's the app clockwork mod uses.

I re-rooted on 1.5 - all was well. However, when you are on 1.5 Clockwork Mod is not available in the market or to download. I finally got ADB to stop hanging at device waiting my using the Eugene 373 Method. That allowed me to adb push the first 1.6 update zip (DR92) and after that I was able to push DMD64 by doing the recovery update zip command.
So, I have successfully applied the DR92 & DMD64 updates. That allowed me to go on the updated market and download Clockwork Mod.
But, I've lost root.
My question now is should I go ahead and update to FROYO and then try to root again? Do you have a good link for the FROYO update?

Not Able to Flash Zip
I recently tried to flash Damage Control Rom 5.3. In Rom manager I am unable to down load damage control as I get an error and none of those Roms show up. I got my hands on a Damage control Zip, followed all the steps dalvik wipe etc, booted into recovery and it goes half way and stops saying its done but gets stuck in a reboot loop. What I noticed is I can only flash Roms that are down loaded by Rom Manager directly. I can not flash any Rom just from the Zip as most claim. Do you have any ideas?
By the way I have a HTC Evo and I am running Rom manager Premium. Really hope you can help, thanks.

Since this is the myTouch 3G/Magic section, you'd be better off asking over in the Evo section.

If I was you I would stay with 1.6 then flash any ROM running the OTA 2.2.1 Froyo from T-Mobile that way you do not run into any problems. I run the ROM in the link below and it is blazing fast and stable.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=848791

Thanks for the response! I did go ahead and update to Froyo and then re-rooted with Super 1 click so I am rooted again.
I like the look of the ROM you linked to (Gio's) but it says,
Note:If you have
SPL -> 1.33.0013/1.33.0013d
Radio -> 2.22.27.08/2.22.28.25
Flash Kernel After ROM -> Kernel 2.6.35.10 – OC-UV-RAM-FP – Dream/Sapphire (32B) (Must be on New SPL + Radio 2708 Combo)
I have 1.33.0013 and that radio, so I guess I would have to flash the Kernel. Did you have to do this as well?

one click root htc magic

Hello. I have a htc magic 32A with perfect spl rooted by the one click root method but i want to install cm6 but i never made it. I have a few doubts:
1º - After i rooted my htc magic, i have to download rom manager and then flash clockwordmod recovery or Ra recovery 1.7??
2º - Then i have to download and do a froyo radio update right to cm6 work? If yes, how and will not brick my phone when turn on wand where i download it?
3º - i presume the update froyo's radio is before i install the cm6. If i update radio and the phone works, then is only install the cm6, port and Gapps all together with rom manager??
I need help please because i have tried so many times install a custom rom and i failed always(thanks god a do always a backup). I want to leave 1.5 stock rom
please write first all you can see in fastboot here...
i think you have only to flash a custom recovery.
dont use rom manager, i have heard there were a lot of bricks with that app and clockwork.
use a amonRA recovery.
follow this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=756918
and all should work.
but first post all you see in fastboot.
ok i flash a recovery and then? i dont need to have a new radio and port to the install cm6 and Gapps?
first post all what you see in fastboot.
then everyone can help you. without these informations we cant help you, we dont now, witch radio do you have or witch spl, etc..
My phone is SAPPHIRE PVT 32A SHIP S-ON H
HBOOT-1.33.0014 (SAPP10000)
RADIO-3.22.23.18
i'm rooted by one click root and already installed rom manager to flash the recovery
Then i dont know how to install cm6 6.0 stable and i want very much.
please help!!!
When you install custom recovery and dont use ROM mangaer it has bugs you can install Ra's recovery v1.7 adn install it via fast boot, download CM6,kernel for ebi36 i think it is and gapps tiny, install via recovery(flash from zip) first cm6 then kernel and then tiny apps and you should be fine
wiki.cyanogenmod.com
and the radio? i have a RADIO-3.22.23.18. Don't have to update the radio? If yes, when i have to update? Before or after the install cm6?
and one more thing. I have to flash the ra recovery via rom manager and reboot to install cm6 or it has to be in other way?
New Radio doesnt work on CM6, install RA recovery via ROM manager at your own risk, then wipe all data via recovery and then instal CM6 kernel and gapps
i dont have to install the 3.22.20.17 radio?? i tried many times to install cm6 in ra recovery rebooted by rom manager but when i flash the rom, it always show an error "status 7" and failed the cm6 installation

the recovery i flashed the ra recovery v1.7.0H by rom manager and then i try to install the rom. I almost sure i have the right files to apply the cm6. I dont understand why is the error "statues 7" when i flash the rom...
PLEASE HELP
Did you try to install CM6 via recovery? Here is the link to download all file and put them on the sdcard, shut down phone, boot to recovery(Home+POwer),there is option install from sdcard.
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Upgrading_from_CyanogenMod_4.2_to_CyanogenMod_5/6
again and again always shows the same error...
i begin the phone in recovery(home and power) and try to install but when i flash the rom, in the midlle of instalation, error "status 7" instalation aborted
Maybe rom manager did something wrong, download eyegor's radio switcher, and flash only old recovery(search it here on forum for magic),download from page all files form my last post wipe all data(dont forget to do that),and then install like cyanogenmod said you should do
i couldnt made it, i think i give up, i am forced to stay in the 5.0.8 stable
Always show a error "status 7", instalation aborted in the cm6 rom...
It is better then to go on Rogers Android 2.1 then to stay on CM5 it is faster and has Sense UI (original HTC),if you want it i will tell you how to install it
if you dont mind i accept the help because im not an expert if you prefer you can send me a PM
dont forget that i have: SAPPHIRE PVT 32A SHIP S-ON H
HBOOT-1.33.0014 (SAPP10000)
RADIO-3.22.23.18
You must first put an eng spl which is 1.33.2010 im not at hime so i cnat post you link,it is done via recovery its .zip format, then you must download radio switcher by eyegor and reboot into fast boot and press flash new button, and download capychimps rom or stock rom with root and install it,if you dont know anything abut your spl ask on capychimps thread

Flash custom recovery on an already rooted Aria with clockworks recovery?

is it possible to switch to another custom recovery after I already got clockworks?
I tried unrevoked but its stuck in the reboot (I believe its trying to root my aria again)
not sure what youre trying to do.... i believe Clockwork is the only Recovery for rooted phones. if you want to flash a custom ROM, well that is something else altogether. please be specific as to what you want to flash to the phone. include a link to the flash too
I was trying to flash psfreedom recovery rom from here
http://psfreedom.com/wiki/HTC_Aria
I believe the method on that website was for unrooted arias without clockworks

To flash a different custom recovery on your Aria, you need to rename the zip file LIBEIMG.ZIP on the SD card and boot in HBOOT (Power on the phone by holding down VOL DOWN and the Power Button). When it boots to the HBOOT screen you should see text stating that it found LIBEIMG.ZIP and is installing it.
awesome. now before I go ahead, is there any clockworkx recovery image I can revert back to?

I'm curious, what recovery are you talking about?
thanks for including the link. the instructions are clear.... Root IS required, Clockwork recovery is recommended, the Freedom Aria flash appears to be a custom ROM.
once the phone is Rooted, boot into Recovery, make a Nandroid backup, and flash downloaded zip file from SD card.
if you need help Rooting, there is all sorts of good methods available on this site. I use the Unrevoked method myself, but it works best on Linux or Mac OS

hmm I think you are looking at the old method which is a custom rom
The new one is a custom recovery which brings me to the question as I dont think you can flash a custom recovery in the clockwork custom recovery.
its possible im looking at the wrong thing, but far as i can tell it states "Recovery Custom ROM" which is totally different from Custom Recovery ROM
From link posted above:
"Update can be installed in recovery mode in Psfreedom settings menu via Update (local) or Update (net) if you have configured your wifi connection. Put the file on your SDCARD and install it.
Download Recovery custom rom : http://alephzain.klutsh.com/aria-recovery.tgz "

I have similar questions. I was trying to update my version of clockwork also using unrevoked again, but couldn't get it to work. I guess my questions are:
1. Is there any benefit in updating to a newer version of clockwork? My current version is 2.0.x.x and I believe the latest one is 2.5.0.4.
2. Will this same method work to do so? Can I rename the latest clockwork .zip file like this and get it updated?
I thought using the flash clockwork option in ROM Manager would do it, but it doesn't. If I reboot from ROM Manager it goes to the newer version, but if I reboot otherwise it goes to my original. The couple times I've used it, there appears to be maybe some different features/options in the newer one and I feel like I might be missing out on something!
What's the difference with this recovery?

These are probably two different things. once you got the recovery rom flashed you can upgrade it in recovery mode (hence its different from original clockwork recovery)
Ok bro, I didn't see much info about it so I'm gonna take your word for it.
@brswattt, far as I can tell this is " basically" used for jailbreaking the ps3.
@armyengineer;
you can use unrEVOked to flash the new recovery. if youre a Windows user, download the unrEVOked tool and run the .exe as Administrator. also make sure there are no conflicting s/w on the PC such as HTC Sync and you have all the drivers installed(HBoot, ADB drivers, etc.)
for more info about the PSFreedom Recovery, check out THIS Thread HERE
unrevoked keeps giving me

error, is there any other way to flash a recovery?

This still isn't working for me. Everything appears to go well at the start, then I get:
Waiting for root...(safe to restart if this doesn't work)
At which point the only way I can restart is to pull my battery. After doing so, it reboots and I get:
This was a triumph
It is not, however, any such thing. After another minute I get this:
Internal error: couldn't find misc.
So I've still got my original version of clockwork, 2.0.1.3, despite the fact that ROM Manager is telling me I have 2.5.0.1. I'm obviously missing something here.
BTW, if it matters I'm running CM 6.1.0

Although there is a ClockworkMod 2.5.0.4 version, I don't think it is for the Aria. According to ClockworkMod ROM Manager, 2.5.0.1 is the most current one for the Aria so I am believing what ROM Manager is telling me since it is written by the same the vendor.
I have tried CM 6.1.0
original HTC Aria 2.1 International Rom
and FR001 RC1
all no go. I think it has something to do with the phone already been rooted and has clockworks installed which makes unrevoked unhappy

OK, let's start from the beginning. You asked about installing an alternate recovery (PSFreedom recovery), but apparently it has its own installation procedure that needs to be run on an unrooted Aria.
What you need is to find just the PSFreedom recovery and copy it to your SD called in a file called LIBEIMG.ZIP and that is how you need to install it on a root phone that has ClockworkMod. Perhaps you need to go back to the PSFreedom thread and ask if a LIBEIMG.ZIP can be produced that can be flashed from HBOOT to replace ClockworkMod.
Looks like everything you need is located in the PSFreedom wiki:
http://psfreedom.com/wiki/HTC_Aria
I got a recovery.bin which is suppose to be used with unrevoked.
are you talking about the same one if I just compress it into a zip file?

Clockworkmod does not work!!!

I'm really at a stage now where i wanna just throw my htc desire hd at the wall!!!! I am trying to just install a custom firmware, not much to ask considering the mammoth amount of hacking you have to do to even downgrade the firmware. I have done absolutley everything that needs to be done to root this device, i have downgraded the firmware i have rooted it, switched off eng s-off and radio s-off i have full root acess with terminal emulator, i put the update zip on the sd card it says something about installation invalid thats because first time i did not disable radio s-off then it went slightly further but then said some other error i have tried everything, i tried rom manager and selected reboot in recovery mode but now it just makes the phone freeze on the htc boot screen when selecting recovery from the boot menu, can someone please please help, how hard can it be just to install coredroids firmware, why can't it just be as easy as the pd98img firmware
help much apprieciated
clockworkmod recovery works fine. Something has just gone wrong with your installation.
To avoid complications later on, you haven't "switched off ENG S_OFF" you've made made S-ON S-OFF and added ENG S-OFF.
You talk about update.zip, is this for a ROM (CoreDroid?)? Which ROM? Did it tell you to rename it to update.zip? If a ROM then it had nothing to do with Radio S-OFF as you only need that for flashing radio.img files and if it was a radio you were trying to push you should use fastboot not recovery. Are you using the right version of recovery (it's very specific about the version required)?
When everything has been installed correctly and instructions followed it is VERY easy to install coredroid's ROM.
hi thanks for the reply, i just follwed the instructions for installing a custom rom as it asks u to chang it to s-off but the guide also says you need to install the update.zip for clockworkmod to get to choose the custom flash rom you want to use but all i get when i select update.zip from the recovery menu is e:signature verification failed installation aborted
Ok, they don't make it very clear do they?
Have you got ROM Manager installed?
Have you got clockworkmod recovery installed? If so what version is it. If not then use ROM Manager to flash it and flash 2.5.1.3 version (as that what it says).
Get the above. Then let me know.
hi mate its version 4.2.0.2 if i select flash clockworkmod recovery it completly causes the recovery menu in bootloader to just hang on the htc startup screen

Sorry, I meant recovery version but it looks like you still need to do that.
In that case push the recovery.img file (grab from the Coredroid thread) using fastboot.
Normally issues are because people miss things but you've confirmed you have ENG S-OFF, Radio S-OFF and root.
ok i tried running this image file in fastboot from this thread http://android.modaco.com/content/z...led-tft-30-nov-2-5-1-3-clockworkmod-recovery/
its written ok but when i select recovery from bootloader it just hangs on the htc startup screen grrr this is just impossible.
That's not for the desire HD.
Grab a 3.x.x.x version from clockwork 3.0.2.8 thread and try that (you can downgrade easily once we got something working).

Verified, ran August GB RUU and phone re-rooted

Okay I verified that if you have s-off you will be able to get root back on your phone if you run the RUU.
As expected the RUU did unroot my phone but it didn't touch s-off. So I downloaded CWM 3.0.0.8 from dougpiston.com and changed it to PB31IMG.zip (this has to be a flashable zip file to work) and it loaded from hboot no problem. I then downloaded the latest superuser app using ROM Manager, version 2.3.6.3 efgh, older versions will not work, and just flashed it through recovery. Superuser does not need to be renamed update.zip you can just leave the name as is and select let me choose zip from sdcard and it installs just fine.
Took a while for me to get superuser running again as I had an older version and I could only find the newest version in ROM Manager.

Thanks to you both. I didn't even click on the Download ROM because it's premium and I'm still getting my feet wet with the whole root thing. I'm off to try the GB RUU w/radio and then re-root.
What if you have s-on?
You can only re-root if you have s-off. S-on blocks you from replacing the stock recovery with a custom recovery and blocks the installation of superuser into the system folder.
Eventually the Unrevoked team will come up with a new way to root phones but this most likely won't happen till the OTA actually starts to drop and people report how they lost root. And then who knows how long it will take them to do it. Could be a few days to a few months.

I ran the RUU with all expectations of not being able to re-root my phone just so I could test if the OTA would change the security settings on my phone. I also still wasn't sure if I could even get root back if it was still s-off so I was willing to experiment with knowing full well what could happen. From past experience with the Eris and losing root for about 3 months you have to flash these leaks with all expectations that it will break your phone and not sweat it too much if it does as eventually someone will find a fix.

You're absolutely right. I have no doubt in my mind someone will come up with a way to root 2.3 on the INC
Alright, I've got s-off, downloaded the superuser 2.3.6.3 efgh app from the ROM manager butttt... now what? I've tried to boot into recovery but I just get an icon of a phone with an exclamation mark inside of a triangle, which I'm assuming isn't good.
Flash clockworkmod recovery first, then the superuser zip.
I tried that but it gives me an error saying: "An error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands!".
If you flashed the GB RUU and lost root and/or s-off.
Someone correct me please if I'm wrong but couldn't you download the froyo RUU and load it then root and s-off?
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
How are you trying to flash it? I'd recommend getting the 3.0.0.7 (AMOLED) or 3.0.0.8 (SLCD) recovery from www.dougpiston.com. Flash in hboot. Or is that how you're doing it?

You're absolutely right. I have no doubt in my mind someone will come up with a way to root 2.3 on the INC

The Eris had a manual method (race method) for rooting the phone but I could never find one posted for the Inc. It involved having the phone connected to a pc with adb running and then taking out the sdcard and rebooting, at a certain point of the boot process you counted to 4 and then pushed the sdcard back in. If you did it correctly adb was able to connect to the phone and you could slip a custom recovery and su in. It was rather complicated and only a handful of people ever did it correctly myself included and it was eventually replaced by a one-click method. The one-click method still pretty much does the same thing you just don't have to manually remove the sdcard or have the phone connected to a pc. In some ways the Eris has a lot more support from its community than the Inc does probably because it was Verizons first android phone.

I second this it has to be a flashable version (contains android-info text file + the recovery image) to work. I used the 3.0.0.8 file from doug pistons website which is already to go just needs to be renamed PB31IMG.zip and make sure it isn't being named PB31IMG.zip.zip as file extensions can be hidden especially if you are renaming it on a pc. I downloaded it directly to my phone and renamed it there so the extension wasn't hidden.

I beleive that is becasue you stil have the stock recovery? Did you flash the clockwork recovery from dougpiston.com?
I flashed the clockwork mod recovery 3.0.0.7 from dougpiston via hboot.
I tried several different ways to boot into recovery to flash the superuser app but it isn't working. When I try to do it from the clockword mod app it says the same error: "An error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands!".
I tried to manually download the superuser .zip and boot into recovery from the hboot menu, but it still gave me that same phone icon with the exclamation mark and triangle and then nothing.

First thing are you getting into recovery from the hboot menu? And you can't get into recovery from ROM Manager because you need superuser installed to do it that way. It still sounds to me like you don't have ClockworkMod Recovery installed. Maybe only version 3.0.0.8 works I'm not sure but that version is for both amoled and SLCD screens. So either try reflashing your copy of 3.0.0.7 or try flashing 3.0.0.8. I do think I had to flash the recovery a couple times to get it to stick.

Another s-off question

Hi about 10 months ago I rooted my Wildfire with no problems using Turkeys ultimate guide from these forums.
I have got apps to sd, live wallpapers running, and all is good. However my phone is still S-on and the H Boot version is 0.80.0002.
When I was playing around with the settings in SetCPU it informed me that the binary was out of date and to update it, but when i tried it would not update as the phone is still S-on.
My question is can I S-off using Revolutionary as it is already rooted? Obviously I will back up using clockworkmod, but if I s-off the phone are there any obvious advantages apart from being able to update the binary in SetCPU?
Thanks
Are you talking about an outdated Superuser Binary? If so, you can download the latest binary here:
http://tinyurl.com/63tsg9c
And simply flash it in Clockworkmod Recovery. This will give you the updated binary and SetCPU should work fine again.
If you have to get S-OFF, then, you will have to apply the official Froyo RUU and update your HBoot to 1.01.0001 because Revolutionary doesn't support any other HBoots, including 0.80.x. Advantages include a writeable /system partition (Which enables you copy paste stuff in the /system folder on a running handset, one case in point is precisely what you described. This will allow updating of the binary), and the other advantage is enabling of Fastboot commands, which allows you to flash stuff like radio's, recoveries, nandroid backups etc directly to the phone without using Clockworkmod Recovery.
Tl;dr - You will have to completely format your device, install official Froyo, and only then can you obtain S-OFF
And simply flash it in Clockworkmod Recovery.
When you say simply flash it in Clockworkmod recovery, what do you mean? And when you say apply the official Froyo RUU and update the HBoot how can I do that as I am running Wildpuzzle ROM at the moment and it says there are no updates available, so can you explain in simple terms what steps to take?
Thanks
Flash in Clockworkmod Recovery - Same way as you installed your WildPuzzle ROM ZIP file. Turn off phone, start using Vol Down + Power, then navigate to RECOVERY, Press Power Button. Here, select "Install Zip from SDCard", then browse to "Select Zip from SDCard", and select the Zip file I linked above.
This entire process is called "flashing".
If you are still interested in getting S-OFF:
- Download the EXE WWE Froyo 2.22.405.1 RUU from here:
http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Buzz
- Connect your Wildfire to your PC, run it. It will automatically proceed and perform the required steps.
- If you get s Customer ID 131, you will need to create a Goldcard using your SDCard. This an be done using GoldcardTool. The required steps and download can be found here:
http://android.modaco.com/topic/308798-pc-application-goldcardtool/
IMO, I would not recommend you to go for S-OFF since it doesn't seem you are too much inclined to stuff like these (It is not a necessity. Besides, once /system is writeable, it is a two edged sword. Messing something up there will likely cause your phone to not boot). Further, it breaks certain functions on Sense ROMs which needs an additional fix found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1156713
hey man, you could also try the test version of unrevoked 3.2 and run that to s off your phone. it works on your h-boot ( i know as i have the same)
since i am new the forum wont let me post the link, its to sstop spamming :/ just search for unrevoked test 3.2 ( it has to be test 3.2 because the others wont work on the hboot to my knowlege. :/)
just download the program and run it and it should do it with no hassle.
good luck

That's totally incorrect. Rooting with Unrevoked =/= S-OFF. Besides, on the very first line the OP says he has rooted his phone using Unrevoked.
ah, sorry about that i was looking at unrevoked forever :/ just ignore me ........
