[Q] Disassemble for Screen Replacement - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does anyone know how to or have a link to a guide to disassemble the phone so I can put my new screen digitizer on my phone? Can find ANYTHING online about it...

Remove battery cover, remove all screws and open. You will have to remove the black warranty stickers to get to several screws but you can find those stickers on eBay for .99cents.

I've done that but it didn't come out... Do I have to pry it open once I remove all three screws?

There should be tiny tabs on the sides of the screen holding it in place. They are not very visible and can break easy but you need to pry those far enough out to remove the screen.

One make sure the power is off [I'm sure you've done that already]. Two, be gentle when prying. Make sure you have a grounding strap on your wrist as the internals are susceptible to static.
Make sure to disconnect the ribbon cable attached to the LCD before removing as well.

Everything looks good now I'm just trying to reconfigure it, but there is the black strip that goes to this white piece and that is very hard to get right...

Yeah. Seems the price has gone up since I last checked them out on eBay.
Oh well, they're still available there anyway.

I've removed the 3 screws after taking the battery cover and void sticker off. I've also been able to pry the tabs up on the sides and the housing seems to come off a little bit. However, the top and bottom of the phone wont budge. What's the trick to remove the housing from around the top and bottom?

Good to hear you got your MT4G up and running. Was the overall process of disassembling your phone and putting it back together pretty easy? I ask because I want to try to center the FFC and to try to eliminate some of the dust under the screen. Could you be so kind to provide a step by step process of the teardown.

where did you get the replacement screen and for how much? Also, is it the "good" or "bad" screen you got now? Or maybe an entirely different model screen? My screen isn't damaged, but I'd like to get an idea of what I'm up against if something should happen to my phone.

Or a Torx driver to just put it back together.
so if i'm interpreting the picture right, the gap which quite alot of us are seeing, is irrelevant really as any dust ingress can't actually get onto the screen due to the seal which the foam forms on the outer case...?
I guess that the screen gap is almost inevitable due to the cut in the seal

no mate the gap in the screen is further down between the actual touch screen and the outer casing not where you have circled. The gap is to the left where the rubber seal bit is and the part of the ribbon cable you can see is where it actually connects to the touch screen.
Madness but crazy-awsome!

Normally I'd join straight in but gona give this one a miss for a while I think

I'm pretty sure that IS what he circled. If you look at the screen itself, you can see the padding that would be at the top, just below the rubber seal area.

No its around the edge of the touch screen so its where the touch screen sits in the frame you can't even see any of that foam when the phone is assembled. You can see the rubber seal on the outer casing on that 3rd picture just compare it to what you can see on your phone.

If that were the case, and the area circled was not the part where the rubber seal was, then the rubber seal would be approximately 3/4" below the top of the phone, rather than 3/8" of an inch (approximation). You can see where the speaker is on the white plastic case, and by looking at the outside of the phone, the rubber seal is literally JUST below that. For the rubber seal to be where the clear screen is wouldn't work proportionately.
Similarities to Blackstone like cam etc.
But disassembling seems to be much easier than Blackstone.
Hope we'll get much more spare parts compared to Blackstone.

after that, i cant get the screen out ot the front housing. is there something im missing? when i use a pry tool to try to remove it like the rest of the parts, it creaks like its going to break. ive broken it down to study it before the lights get here just to have a grasp on what im doing. any one have any pointers? some one told me it may be glued in and i would need a hair dryer or something similar to remove it. any help you guys could share would be greazt! thanks!

Ballsy man, a lot of phones have the screens glued. It's a stronger construction method and allows for the phone to be thinner.

Its a double sided sticker holding the lcd to the front housing. I've replaced mine and had to reuse it. It went ok but I stretched it and the glue weakened.
Also the soft keys are glued to the lcd so remember to unplug that ribbon.

[INFO] Asus Transformer Minor Teardown

Well today I thought I'd see what could be done about a light bleed spot that was annoying me. There are a couple of light bleed spots (seems pratically evident to some degree on all IPS screen devices). Anyway I did a minor disassemble as a result.
Result: Impossible to get rid of completely, its just an unfortunate trade off. I did manage to make it less intense and under normal light conditions and 60% brightness you can not really notice it now. p.s. there is nothing to "losen" the screen. It is not screwed down by the edges.
Anyway since it was apart I took some pics so you can see what is inside the beast
WARNING: The bezel is VERY fragile, so be warned. I used a guitar pick to remove it VERY carefully. After the bezel is off its easy sailing to remove the back cover. /warning
Enjoy.
LHS Speaker (CRAP!!!)
Thanks for this. I've been umming and ahhing about doing it myself, just to see whats in there. Now I dont have to. Added to ultimate thread as well. Nice job.
Your welcome
Just got a couple questions if I may. In order to lift off the back plastic casing, was it just held down by those 2 torx screws at the bottom by the 40pin connector socket, and did it just lift off easily, or were there clips holding it down? Oh and were there any labels/security stickers that would invalidate a warranty that you saw when it was open please, as I cant see any in the pics?

Hi stuntdouble,
Two torx screws have to come off first, these are part of what holds the bezel down.
After that you need to use a guitar pick from the back to lift the bezel up...best to get all 4 corners up and keep sliding..as soon as it wont slide lift it out and back in again a bit further on... it absolutely destroyed the pick by the way..lots of sharp edges in there.
The bezel will then come off from the front of the tablet. Just be careful and dont force it, Around the 40 pin connector was the biggest pain.
The back cover is held down by 4 screws on the top glass, and umm if I recall about 10 screws behind where the bezel . It basically then falls off once all screws are off with not to much effort.
There are also no security stickers over any of the screws anywhere inside the tablet
Excellent thx a lot. Will have a fiddle inside mine one of these days then.
What did you do, specifically, to fix bleed? Were some screws too tight, too loose, did you move stuff around...?
Thanks for the pics.

I tried to lift the screen a bit where the bleed was. when i did that it went away a bit. I then cut and jammed small bits of black foam under it. it worked ok enough but not to get rid of it totally.
There are no screws holding it down. well not onthe edges anyway. You would have to dig deeper to find out the direct cause. I did not want to do this as it means components being removed.
I appear to have a small bit of hair or fibre trapped under the glass - it's visible when the screen is off - do you think doing a tear down like you did would give me access to blow it off or is the screen still secured?
Thanks for doing this, gives me an idea of how well its made.
Thanks for posting this! After breaking it open, any ideas of where the creaking is coming from?
Great work there, thanks for sharing your efforts with all.
What size torx screw driver does on need? Would loosening the bottom screws help for light bleed ?
Thanks for posting this...I don't suppose you have any more shots of the left/right speakers? Like a closer view/shot of them? There's a lot of people with speaker issues and I'm thinking I should just replace my own/test it somehow.
Thanks!

Yes I'd say you could with a can of air, you would not have to remove the screen, however you risk getting more dust under it to be honest. So id say be careful.

is it around the edges you get the creaking?... if so its the bezel as that is clipped on. The back cover is screwed on pretty well.

T5 torx. The screws's inside are phillips 000's.
loosining the T5 torx screws will do absolutley nothing to help bleed as they are no where near the screen. The screen starts and ends where it shows externally. The black boarders are just filled with circuitboards.

Figure 1
Using a safe open pry tool, pry the back housing away from the rest of the device. It will be clipped into place, so carefully work your way around all edges with your pry tool.
Remove the three (3) small Phillips screws holding the motherboard in place. There will also be two (2) flex cables that will need to be released. These are simple pop connectors that only need to be lifted with a safe open pry tool to release.
Figure 2
The motherboard can now be safely removed.
We are now left with the screen assembly and front case. Using a heat gun or hair dryer, heat the outside edges of the outer screen for 45-60 seconds. Use quick movements and do not stay in one area for too long.
Now, using a safe open pry tool, pry the screen assembly away from the front cover and bezel. Reheat if necessary.
Figure 3
Your screen assembly can now be replaced.
Simply replace the damaged parts with the new ones and reverse the order to put your phone back together again.
The screen is the super hardest part, tried with heat gun, but seams like it stick forever

It shouldn't hard. Just use a pry tool and work your way round gently and slowly prying the screen up from the frame.

If its not a connection issue then it could be a bad screen. Does the touch screen on your original still function ok? You may wish to contact your supplier.

Thanks. Glad it helps!
When attempting to disassemble my NS4G to do this repair, I encountered a lot of difficulty trying to remove the back housing without disturbing/breaking the front bezel. Fortunately, the replacement assembly I was installing came with a new bezel already installed; but had I needed to salvage the original (or if I ever need to disassemble the device again), do you have any more specific advice about properly removing the back housing?
Granted, I was using a guitar pick instead of a safe open pry tool, but I couldn't seem to do it without causing the bezel to come undone opposite my prying.

You can't successfully replace just the glass. The glass and the LCD are fused together on these models.
iFixit also has a guide...cant post links yet but easy to find with a quick search
How would you use one of these to replace just the screen: http://www.ebay.com/itm/All-New-Out...773?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3a77cd07e5

These eBay sellers really shouldn't sell these parts as they can not be used.

Nope, after i tested something i saw that it dont made a difference if i take original or third party . On both batterys the diplay getting pressed out. I tryed glue stripes for phones bjt dont work . So i have my phone without back cover into a secure case
Did you disassemble the glass of digitizer to use these stripes? I ordered a kit on eBay; an UV lamp, LOCA glue and some hypodermic syringe to try put a little bit of glue under the glass. Maybe it gonna work that way. Which battery you talking about?

Hi again! Thank you for helping so far.
I'd like to disassemble original glass with a heater and put some new LOCA glue. Do I need to clean glass/lcd after disassembling it? I mean old glue must be completely off, huh?
I bought LOCA glue and a UV lamp from eBay. Is that lamp any good ? I just got it but seen some movie about applying LOCA glue and they got much bigger and probably much better UV lamp than mine and wondering if mine will be fine though?
Tried to do it yesterday but failed. I think the glass was still attached to the LCD and it was some glue holding it to the frame. Anyway, screen is partially broken now and I'm wondering if I should just buy a new one and replace it or just go for OnePlus 3T or 5.
