[Q] Trouble with slingbox and T-Mobile Dash 3G - Dash 3G, Snap General

I have been using a slingbox with my T-Mobile Dash 3G for over six months with no problems. I used it on Monday of last week with no problems. I didn't need to use it again until Friday. But when I tried to use it, I got a message saying a problem has occurred with Slingplayer.exe. The program ran long enough to check for updates (which there are none) and attempted to locate my slingbox before giving the error; the same thing happens every time that I try to use it now.
I have not installed anything new on my phone. I use very few third-party applications and haven't added anything new for months. I checked my slingbox and it appears to be working properly. I can use it with a computer with no problems.
I tried uninstalling slingplayer mobile and re-installing. I still get the same results, an error after it tries to locate. I have tried a soft reset with no change. I am considering doing a hard reset but I don't see how that will change anything.
I tried downloading a free program that is supposed to do the same as slingplayer and it basically does the same. I get an error when it tries to locate my slingbox. All of my other programs are working perfectly.
Is it possible that T-Mobile is blocking it? I can't see how I'm using any more data than I have in months past. I can still watch YouTube as much as I want with no problems.
I looked at slingmedia's website but they don't have any helpful information.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for replying. I checked the link you provided but that does not appear to be the problem I'm having; mine worked for about six months then stopped working unexpectedly even though I have not made any changes.
---
Edit: I found the solution on my own a while ago but I forgot to come back and post the solution! It seems that my internal memory was too low for slingplayer to run so it would just crash whenever I tried to start it. Moving some programs to external memory (SD card) did the trick. I'm not sure what the threshold is as the program does not list memory requirements.
Anyways, still an awesome phone, even better since I can watch my slingbox, too!

google local

I get a connection error when I try it. I have a cingular 8125. Any work arounds for this?
When it trys to connect push cancel and it will ask if you want to select another service. Click yes and choose "The Internet." If that doesn't work try different ones, depending on how you have your phone set-up.
Sorry buddy but google local doesn't go well with this phone. When I use google local it works but after about 2 minutes the program freezes. This started happenning when I updated to Google Local 1.24 or something like that. Anyone know where I can get the old version of Google Local? Does anyone have a fix for this?
this was posted over at Hofo:
map4pda.com
works very well. Has google and MS maps, plus traffic overlays. It tries to collect your phone number teh first time you run it, but I gave it a bogus # and it worked fine.
That sucks, google local is awesome. Do you use the smart phone version or the pda version?
Try ViaVirtualEarth. http://www.viavirtualearth.com/vve/Gallery/VEMobile.ashx
Yes, it is an MS service, but it does work pretty well!
I agree VirtualEarth works pretty well....
Google Local works pretty ... well, not well. Locks up wiith me also on all the phones I've set it up on.
I'll check out the map4pda.com, thanks!
Would love to find some kind of real time traffic app for this device! 5 hours commuting to get in and out of Miami sucks! (3,000 miles a month BLOWS!)
I've used both, and I must say google local owns all of them in my opinion. I just wish it worked for our phones. Is there any way to put a request through to get it?
I tried Map4PDA. It is a nice applicaton, but after a while of normal usage, such as browsing the maps, loading the satellite maps, it eats up nearly all the memory, just frozen. I tried couple of times, it seems that it always stuck with the less memory. Not sure how does it handle the memory, through .Net Mobile? I am using T-Mobile MDA, and I can see that the memory is full pretty quick, only 1M left, then the device hangs on Map4PDA.
Anyone has the similar experience?

Wifi to GPRS/3G

I have searched this and other forums and have not seen either this problem or an answer to it. Per AT&T's suggestion, I just upgraded to the new AT&T rom version that adds PTT and seems to have big problems. My current issue is that when I first boot up and connect via GPRS/3G all works well. When I get to a wifi area and switch to wifi, again all works well. However when I leave the wifi area (or just turn off wifi) I can't get any data via GPRS/3G. The balloon comes up saying it is connecting. The little "G" and bidirectional arrows in the top left indicate it is connected. However in the browser, it just continues to grind away with "Locating" in the bottom right corner until it finally times out and puts up a screen that says that the "page cannot be displayed because the connection was lost". I open the connection manager and press and hold the "Data Connection" icon until that goes off and try again, same problem. The only way I can get GPRS/3G data connection to actually work again is to reboot. Any ideas what is going on or how this can be fixed? Forgot to add that this is an HTC 8525. Thanks.
From your description I wasn't able determine whether AT&T's suggestion was aimed at remedying the issue, or if it's something that came about with the update.
Assuming the latter, you may want to try a hard reset first and run it for a bit before loading any other apps. Failing that, reflash the ROM. I had a lot of trouble with my radio when my 8525 was new, but it mysteriously cleared up after a few radio flashes.
Thanks but still a problem
Thanks for your thoughts here. I hard reset and reflashed.
Yes the firmware is the latest one that AT&T has suggested that everyone who had the older Cingular phones upgrade to. It provides the AT&T logo, the "push to talk" feature, and some other junk. I have contacted AT&T about this and their response was to send me a new phone that they claimed had the old firmware, since they have been getting a lot of complaints about the new firmware. It didn't have the old firmware and also it's SIM card reader appears to be broken. I called HTC and they said that they too have had lots of complaints about the new firmware quirks but had nothing to offer to solve them. Anyway, the old firmware had no problem switching between wifi and CGRS so I don't think it is in the hardware. On the other hand I'm surprised that nobody else is encountering the problem from the upgrade.
I'm having the same prob. Purchase three of these phones and the other users have little technical expertise. First I set up a sync with my office PC. Then loaded the ROM update. I run MAC's @ home had difficulty connecting to my home wifi. Finally determined that the 8525 would not accept the 13 key ASCII wep password. Needed to use the HEX. So I connected. Went to work and had problems syncing with my PC. Active sync had to rediscover the device. Now I'm back home and can't connect again. My Device ID changed names upon "resyncing" and I updated the Airport Base Station with my new name. I've spent a lot of time on this issue.. Maybe I need to send em back for an iPhone!
Well I found a solution to it
This is a great forum - though somewhat hard to search through thoroughly. Anyway the solution for me was to go back to ROM 1.34. Found how to do that through flashing from the micro card at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=311704&highlight=cingular+8525+rom+version and getting the production ROM version at http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_Upgrades. Back to normal - everything works fine. Just for a trial, I also downloaded ROM V2.1.1 and it works find also - but sure seems a bit large - ends up with 42.9M of storage free vs V1.34 that has 50.25. Think I'll try the the memory expansion process at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=298327&highlight=want+more+storage. That seems to at least provide a more than 9 megabyte smaller MBH file but I don't know what that translates to in memory usage yet.
Suspect there is a way to fix this problem but I haven't seen anything in the forums on it.

New connections database installed

Today in the morning i started the day with taking the HD and the opera. Opera was opened by clicking a favourite from TF3D. But after the established UMTS connection opera closed surprisingly very fast and the "settings" menu started self.
"New connections database available, please install"
I affirmed the download, it installed and the HD shuted down without question and needed manually restart. I found no problems after that.
What does it mean? I never experienced such kind on my other HTC or WM devices.
I have not activated the automatic Windows update in settings!!! And also all other update modes in different progs i believe i have set to manually. ???
Yes, same here, except i didnt touch opera. The message came immediately after USB-connecting the HD to my PC. The download failed with a network error, and i still havent been able to complete after >10 tries.
Looks like it comes from 208.188.89.139, which resolves to 208-188-89-139.ded.swbell.net. I dont have a clue who that is and what it means, somebody else maybe?
it's done exactly what it says it has, it has downloaded and installed a new connections database. you know, the one used by the automatic connection setup wizard that triggers after a hard reset. it is desired behaviour and nothing to worry about (unless they've removed your carrier)! ;-)
This could mean the preconfigured profiles for various operators and their packet data (read: internet) connections. It just means the phone knows how to set up the packet data modem settings according the operator. So maybe it wanted to connect some htc database to pick up more recent configurations files? Someone could mail to htc and ask whats going on.
Got the same message right now. It's downloading right now....
update: due to connection error failed to download new database....

Does it mean there is allways an (not indicated) automatic connection check-up wizard in the background running and a permanent update check?
I couldn't believe this. And i don't like it!
It's very suspicious to me if my HD talks with other sources without informing me! This could also be not good for the datarate and battery.
it at least asks before it does anything. There are other companies who handles this much worser (ms, sony, etc.). Those do it without asking the end user lol.
Maybe this is ROM or carrier dependant?
Mine didn't ask or download anything.
i notice it after plugging in the usb to active sync with the computer.
I have ActiveSync running the whole morning, even reconnected the phone a few times.
Won't download anything though, which I don't mind.
Got the same message for 4 times this morning, every time it tried to connect, but it won't download more than 1%. Does anyone what it is trying to download and why?
lol mine keeps failing the download. furthest he got was like 30%
In other words if i update the few Kb on weather or stock application or during a fast email check, the HD checks additionally and secretly for updates? Sounds for me like the Vista automatic update blah. I want to stop that "wizard". If someone hacks that magician and add it to coming ROM updates it's dangerous.
It's not happend to my uncle HD
installing it for the 10th time today
just to get rid of that alert, everytime i say yes to download the update on my HD, and then it says failed.
now it stopped at 8% again
If this a hidden but common process with a today new published update, hundreds of HDs trying to connect now and to download the file. 6h ago i found no download problems. Now all of you other guys in Europe and Egypt are awakened
Yep I too have just recieved that message. At 49% and happily downloading, does help I am on HSDPA at the mo so no issues. I suggest that the people having issues check that they have a good internet connection or get on a wifi network.
Or htc servers are just getting a bit hot
Hehe maybe they should've rolled this out little more carefully.
Mine stopped at 1% through usb cable.
same for me i download it and it soft rest
Just popped up a few times on mine as well - constantly failing.

Cannot access Marketplace or Twitter Updates

Hey all.
Hope you can help. This is driving me nuts.
Out of the blue, I cannot access Marketplace or twitter updates. Email adn Web are working fine over same connection.
See this video for the problem: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rxMmdWElZZc
(Sorry in advance that it came out side ways?!)
Its the same on wifi, makes no difference what connection I'm on.
I installed Total Commander and poked around but didn't delete anything etc. Just opened and closed folders.
Anyone got any idea for me?
I'm at a loss. I feel like its my fault but I've gone over and over the settings and did a soft reset. Not willing to do a hard reset just yet as I don't want to install everything all over again.
Thanks for any advice/help in advance!
wab.
This just gets weirder and more frustrating. What have I done? I downloaded "The Channer" with an excellent wifi connection and it says it cannot connect to the internet, asks me can it use cellular connection and still can't connect? Something seriously wrong here. Help!
I have a video of the above uploading to YouTube right now. Seriously, some advice appreciated. Ta.
Edit: Here is the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QAygBKFydME
I think it may have something to do with an accidental deletion of files in ConnMgr in Total Commander?: See that mess here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c6_9jcAAzbE
I didn't hit delete on any of the files there. Just pressed them and then they disappeared...
Can Anyone help? Could someone please look in ConnMgr to see what files are there? Thanks!
Dont soft reset. Power off and power on. Repeat if necessary.
Thanks Gavinfabl. I've power cycled about 5 times to no avail :-(
Goto settings tab on home screen, select menu, all settings, connections, wifi and turn on from here. Also, try rebooting your router. Can you connect on 3g signal?
Also try going into the connections applet, and edit current and untick connect via proxy if ticked.
Hi again, I have wifi on and it doesn't make any difference. I've rebooted router, can get mail and web fine, also wifi router at work is fine, again mail and web only. Twitter, Marketplace and The Channer all give an immediate unable to connect error. I fear its something more serious. I've no issues with my 3G or HSDPA signal. I've checked and unchecked proxer server and it makes no difference. All logical courses action (to me at least) are proving fruitless.
So, I uninstalled Marketplace and reinstalled it from the mp.windowsphone.com site, restarted my phone (automatically) and then did a soft reset.. now Marketplace won't even open although its listed in the start menu. I am seriously about to throw this phone out the window...
Was going to do a hard reset. Discovered MyPhone won't connect either to backup my stuff. What is going on???
I had same problem with Marketplace and Facebook. Everything else connected fine over wifi and 3G. I ended up doing a hard reset and it has been fine ever since. It was the only way I could get around the problem
i have the exact same problem ive spent hours on the phone with msoft to no avail you have to be a very special kind of stupid to be a customer service rep at microsoft man they are brain dead anyway if someone gets this figured out please post and a hard reset on mine did not work
What other apps have you installed getwet as a matter interest. Are you having the exact same issue as in my videos? Trying to find a commonality here. Its not good that a hard reset did not work for you! I was planning on doing that this weekend.
Happend to me to.
FB, market and widget stopped working but a hard reset fixed it!?
No clue what made it happen, I've installed most apps again and this time it works fine.

Is Usb tethering still working in 2.1?

Hi
Just tried to use usb tethering for the 1st time since 2.1 update.
All still looks like its working but no internet access. Tried under Linux on the same pc that always worked under 1.5
Also tried it on xp although I have never used it on there before I got the same kind of symptoms. Itooks like its all working but no internet, no pings, no nslookup.
So..... can someone try it and let me know if its working for you.
I am on T-Mobile UK. Ota 2.1 update, non rooted, stock Rom.
Thanks
I have exactly the same problem. I have spoken to TMob UK support who have not yet managed to solve it.
I'm wondering if they've not set up the phone right in the 2.1 update.
Glad its not just me. I will report it tomorrow as well.
I have a mate with a desire on tmob - will do a side by side with him tomorrow (and confirm his is working) and see if it is just settings - although it feels like a deeper problem to me.
I'll post findings.
Same here - tethering works fine on my Desire, but the missus Hero doesn't work - hoping for some resolution soon
Just moved house so am without internet for the next week, so tethering is bloody useful right about now!
Have put a 2.2 rom onto my Desire and am using WiFi tethering for now, but doesn't help when I'm not in...
If you are rooted, there is an app that works fine.
But custom roms don't have this issue afaik. VillainROM 12 works fine with tether, as I had to use it at work to test external connectivity to a system.
It's an option and one I will look into.
It worked fine under 1.5 and so far its the only thing that us causing me an issue.
T mobile tech support were able to reproduce, and in their testing they found a factory reset fixed the problem - I have confirmed (as has another user over on the tmobile forums).
Gave me an excuse to clear up the rubbish that had accumulated on phone.
All working now.
its working fine for me :/

and me, just done the Orange OTA 2.1 update and tethering works fine on the phone right after the update... if you need to factory reset to get it working it must be something you have installed on the phone.
Or maybe tmobile did something different to orange. Or maybe the radio roms are different.
Was quite a few tmob users and tmob support so if it was a rogue app then it was a fairly common one
Either way. It's working now.
Wish all problems were resolved as.simply.
Sent from my HTC Hero using XDA App
I certainly think it has something to do with the installed apps on the phone after the update else why would a factory reset solve it, its not the Rom that is the problem... I take it you had heavily customized your phone.
Sent from my HTC Hero using XDA App
Actually no- 5 apps, lastfm, xda, facebook, ambling audio book reader and handcent sms - restore took less than 5 minutes after factory reset, all contacts and calendar info on google.
Given that the functions like handing out dhcp address worked, it was fundamentally was "all there" I can easily imagine a startup routine that says something like
if file exists "some config file" then leave it alone
else make a new one
When you reboot, config file exists so leave it alone in, when factory reset - file doesn't exist, make a new one.
Perhaps the key thing is I was a heavy user of tethering before the update, perhaps when I did the upgrade I forgot to "stop" tethering and just pulled the cable - can't remember, so maybe I had a config file/param that the newer kernel, ip stack etc. didn't expect to see and didn't handle well.
The key thing about factory reset isn't the rom I agree, the code is the code - but it's the wiping of the configuration and volatile data - something got broken for me, and the guys at tmobile, and about 5 other users who reported the same problem - so whilst it obviously works for some without a reset, equally it didn't for others - for at least 3 of us (2 end users and 1 at tmobile) a reset was needed.
If it was a one off, absolutely agree, it must have just been me/my setup - but it wasn't an isolated case.
Personally, I was surprised when the 2.1 update didn't wipe the phone, I was expecting it - so in my case no real problem once suggested to me - others might have more dependency on the installed apps and config but for me this was an easy fix.
Either way, it's back working now - so if it works without a reset - great, and if it doesn't work, a reset looks to fix it - so great as well.
