So whats the big deal with the Class of SD cards...
I have read here and other places about not being able to use anything below Class 6.
If I understand correctly a Class 2 writes at 2mb/s, Class 3 writes at 3 mb/s, Class 4 writes at 4 mb/s..and so on up to Class 6....
So i understand that everyone is basically saying you need to be able to write at 6 mb/s....why is this and why cant I use my 4GB Class 2 Sdhc card to store caches and/or apps....I paid $7 for my 4GB card but didnt pay attention to the Class because i didnt think it would matter...
Thanks...
From what I understand you should be fine using it to move apps to the card. People say if you move data or cache you will experience a slowdown. Id say try it if you want, at worst you just undo the data/cache.
I tried using a brand new 4g class 2 card, and massive failure. I purchased an 8g class 6 on newegg.com for $17 shipped and the same install worked perfectly. My g1 now has 250+ apps and runs just fine with 40+mb free space on device (I left my data on there)
Apparently a good Class 4 card is good enough, but to be sure you really should go with a Class 6 one, or you might experience a lot of lag.
My class 2 all I did was run the apps off the card everything seemed to go good and then I wasn't able to update themes anymore any theme I tried to update said bad and would abort. And then my phone began to freeze all the time and apps began to force close or not ever launch. It work great for about a week and then all that started to happen. I picked up newegg the 8gb class6 about 2 weeks ago and have since to have a problem!
i have an 8gig class 4 and when i moved apps to the sd card my G1 became really sloooooooooooooow. apps took a while to open, and when i was finished with an app and hit the "back" arrow or the home button it would take 3-4 seconds for the home screen icons to show up. it was quite annoying.
i have gone back to running the apps from the internal memory and i'm back to top speed. i'll probably try again with a class 6 sometime soon.
well thanks...I will make sure to buy a Class 6 than...didnt think it was a big deal and couldnt find any others who did fine with other classes...
I'm waiting for my 16gb to arrive but I'm wondering if the chippy video is due to the included memory card.

just got my new 16gb class 4 card and the video steal seems to be a problem. when moving the camera, the video will be smooth, then pause for a split second and continue w/smooth recording again, then the video will pause for a second again and so on. anyone having this issue while recording in hd?

Bumping this thread because both my wife and I have the same problem with hesitations in video. She's stock; I have a 16gb class 4, stock rom, and faux's latest kernel.
Anyone else have or solve this problem?
I also have this problem. I was wondering if it was the sd card. I have this isssue with all sense ROMs. I even unrooted and flashed PD15IMG to get back to "as new" and reformatted sd card. The hesitation was still there. I haven't always had this problem with HD videos... I have a few videos recorded a while ago that are perfect or have one spot where it skips. I have contacted Tmobile about the issue because I have the insurance. The technician wanted to do some research on the issue and get back to me within 72 hours... which should be tomorrow (3-15-11). He said he wanted to see if there was a solution he didn't know of before they replace the phone. I'll let you know what happens.
T-mobile told me it was my sd card. I bought a class 10 and still had the problem. I called them back and asked for a replacement phone. My replacement should be here tomorrow.

Seems unlikely, but keep us posted...
I read that rebooting right before creating a video helps, and I've also played around a little with overclocking the cpu before making a vid. Seems like these have helped on mine, but haven't had a chance to really test it out thoroughly.
I did get good 720p recording a day or two ago. It was a 40 second video with no choppiness. It's the first good video I had in a long time. I was running the RoyalGlacier 1.2 ROM. Team Royal makes great ROMs, especially coupled with faux123's kernels.
Here's some info that might be helpful to someone. I'd been having problems with choppy video, and was using a 16gb Patriot class 4 card. It turns out that this card was at least part of the problem. It's not a 'counterfeit' and was bought through a reputable retailer, and it passed the the 'h2testw' program in terms of overall capacity. BUT, the test showed that the write speed was actually a bit slower than the 8gb card that came with the phone (the read speed on the 16gb was a bit higher than the 8gb card, but I imagine this doesn't matter in recording vids much).
So I'm back to using the 8gb card that came with the phone. This fixes 90% of the choppiness issue that I've been experiencing the past couple months (got the new card in January). Btw, I did try reformatting the card, etc. I'm now going to look at buying another 16gb or 32gb card, but will be staying away from the Patriot brand and also trying to get one that is class 6 or higher.
I have class 2, 4, 6, and 10 cards. Only my class 10 patriot 8gb micro sd card seemed to work. Honestly a class 4 card should be fine for 720p recordings...but something's up with the software.

It may be that something in the software keeps it from writing efficiently, but definitely weird that the 16gb class 4 patriot tested out with a lower write speed than the 8gb one that came with the phone...and that's the only thing that seemed different with that card that would explain why I was getting so much more stuttering on my vids.

what class is the 8gb card that came with your phone? some came with class 2 and some with class 4.
it's commonly known in the storage/memory world that the larger the card size the slower the write (and often read) speeds will be. Granted when an SD card is certified to be a certain class it should meet the standards of that class. That being said, how a card is formatted, handled, and ejected or not ejected properly affects the performance of the card.
in my years of experience buy the size of the card that you need to use...getting a card 2x than your storage needs maybe thinking ahead but if speed is what you want, smaller is better and of course the higher class the better.
I got my 8gb class10 patriot from amazon for $25 flat and have no complaints. SD card tester programs tell me the card is writing data at about 10mb/sec which is what it should be doing.
good luck with your video issues, and hopefully a future update will rectify the situation so that even class 2 can handle the recording and playback of recorded videos on the device.

The card that came with the phone is a class 2, and the test showed it was writing at above 5MBps, while the 16gb Patriot class 4 was just above 4MBps.
In terms of creating videos on each card, I tested them each immediately after a full format and with a somewhat controlled view of the same scene. Thus, the only variable that would seem to be able to account for the poor performance using the 16gb card seems to be the card itself, and, my guess is more specifically, the write speed.
Perhaps slightly over 4MBps is just below the threshold for what is required for a stutter-free video, and perhaps some variability in the cards that shipped with the phones accounts for why some people are reporting hesitations in their videos while others are not.

that's probably a good evaluation of the situation. i never did test my 4gb class 6 card, but i do know it transfered the contents of my music folder significantly faster than the 8gb class2 card that came with the device. Yet that card was still not enough for stutter free 720p recording. I can only assume its speeds were <10mb/sec. So the sweet spot is probably 6mb/sec.+
thinking bigger picture, there's a serious QC issue if some people with the same cards have issues while others don't. though i question if some people think that they're recording 720 by default and never bothered to check the video settings to begin with (default is 480p). therefore some people think they have no problems, but it's only because they're recording in 480p (which is still clear, especially on screen).
i had a few minutes. ran a test on 3 cards
1. 8gb class2 - stock card - ~4mb write
2. 4gb class6 - ~6mb write
3. 8gb class10 - ~10mb write
So as i stated before, for my phone, i need more than 6mb/sec + card for stable 720p video recording.
I haven't checked this thread in a while, but I just got a replacement mt4g w/the good screen and thought maybe it'd improve, but hd video recording is still freezing up every so often. so I've just resorted to taking video in widescreen. hopefully someone figures something out. I'm running faux kernel, stock rom.
So I was reading this thread and remembered a thread I read yesterday in the android apps and development forum. Apparently we are governed by how fast our SD Cards are read, but you can change it. Anyway, if someone wants to try the fix out (seems simple) I think it would be a good place to start. If it ends up working out make sure to let us know which method you used.

just flashed 2048 on my mt4g. tested a few short clips which seemed to have improved. The 2nd clip there were only a few very slight pauses on video recording. This was off of a fresh reboot though, so I will continue to test through out the day as I use my phone more.
Update: The flash didn't seem to stick. as suggested by some others on the thread I'm now using/testing sd speed boost. Settings seem to stick, and so far there hasn't been any choppiness in recording hd. will continue testing and let you know.
Update: Doesn't help...still happens.
im on cmrc4, using the same sd card that came with the phone it is recording fine
could you try this out

Anyone else experiencing a slow device? Some apps take forever to load, some pretend they are loading then I am thrown back to the start screen.
Going into things like people, or market place takes ages, and the screen sometimes freezes up for a few seconds while it fetches data.
I also find that after waking up the machine I have to wait about a second before I can scroll up the keylock or the screen doesnt respond to my touch.
Is this the norm for most people? Its tolerable, but extremely annoying.
When they work, the graphics are smooth as silk.
Also, downloaded need for speed from the app store and find the sound to be very choppy, to the extent that I have to shut the music off for the game to be playable.
Haven't had any issues of that sort here - Everything has been running smooth and fast - I am using 8G Sandisk card - Been playing need for speed and it has been smooth as well -
Its been smooth as butter for me. You may need to try a different sd card. Only certain cards work well for wp7... they have to have a good random access speed.
I had been using WP7 for almost 2 days without live services on a 2gb card, then once I got my code and activated live services, everything was a bit chuggy. I reflashed with a 16gb card and everything is now super fast and smooth, so you may need a larger card possibly?
I'm having the same problems as well. Phone was really fast until I put an SD card in now it lags alot and some apps look like they are about to start and then shut down.
Can some one who's phone is running without any lag try installing Endomondo (free GPS running app) and see if it starts on your phone. This would indicate its my Kingston 4GB SDHC class 4 card.

i used a 16gb class 2 at the first time and the system is laggy. now i am using a 8gb 6 class card, it seems normal now.
hmm it doesnt seem to make much sense. My card is a 16gb class 4.
I have a 6gb class 6 I could try, or a 16gb class 2.
I would have thought class 4 would be good.
Just a real pain to have to go back to square 1 with a hard reset, then unlocking, bla bla bla.
I just assumed that what I am experiencing is the norm for this port, but apparently not.

You can just turn your phone off and swap the SD cards, then reboot. It should format the new card for you.
Oddly enough, I just took my mem card out to check the class printed on it, popped it back in, and now my device is running as smooth as silk, no lagging, aps load very quickly.
Wtf gives?!

Sandisk class 2 cards seem to work well. I've heard that higher class cards sometimes has speed tweaks done to them to make write speed higher, but will lower the random access speed, which is what wp7 needs. I'm using sandisk class 2 16gb and it works great for me.

I took it out and in while the handset was still on.
But, in the last hour or so I decided that maybe the mem card was not good for win7, so I formatted my class 6 16gb scandisk, did a hard reset, went through chevy unlocking, etc etc (ive done this so many times now I have got the whole process down to under 10 mins
Now the handset is the best its ever run, fast, smooth, no lagging.. I had convinced myself that the laggy version I had before was the norm, so this truly is like having a brand new HD7.
It only took 2 days, and about 18 man hours, but finally (knock on wood) its complete and im a very, very happy bunny.
I also hope this clears up the battery drain problem too.
Crazy how a tiny bit of plastic can be so problematic and critical to the whole handset working correctly. No wonder Microsoft have locked down the SD cards inside the handset, but great that we have the option to upgrade and reset unlike iphone.

Can you tell me what the model number of your Sandisk memory card is and keep us updated about the speed of the phone or if the laggyness comes back. This could be a big help for user having a laggy phone, like me.
Oh and does wifi work with this card now?
Thanks

I thought it might be written on the SD card.
I was searching for a 8gb Sandisk card model number SDSDQR-8192-A11M as thats the one Sandisk listed as compatible for Windows Phone 7 but I could only find the 8gb card model number SDSDQR-8192-E11M.
The difference between them is the A is class 2 and the E is class 4. I think I'll just get the E one and give it a go. It's only a few quid
cheers for your help!
This arrived today from Amazon and good transfer speeds: 10MB/s write 20MB/s read via USB reader but much slower via phone connected over mass storage.
Everything transferred fine but now sense is very slow after boot up and when I scroll to another tab, sense hangs. Very disappointing. I'm running Dutty's V14 which is close evolution of the V3 ROM.

when i compare 8G class 4 vs 16G class 4, 16G will make my phone sluggish. does bigger size make it slower?
Not sure about that. Perhaps after start up if you've added lots more media and the phone has to index it all.
After some more testing the phone seems to work normally if I insert my 16GB card while the phone is booting and swap it for the 32GB Lexar once loading is done. I can then fly around sense with the card indexed correctly without the problems.
What could be the issue with booting the phone with the 32GB card inserted?
format the card, under sector allocation size, check the largest size, probably 64kb.
greatly increase speed for transfers and random access.

I've been eyeing that listing for the last few weeks (a few times a day) and every time it says "usually ships within 1 or 2 months." I guess the OP got really lucky then.
On the other hand, I saw Patriot selling a class 10 32gb micro sd for under $100.
Must have been very lucky yeah, it was in stock on Saturday, that's all I can remember lol.
I ended up going for a Kingston 32GB Class 4 card, was only £29.99. Seems too good to be true but I figured for that price it was worth a shot!

... or you could just stop by Hong Kong and buy it there. I picked up the genuine lexar 32gb class 10 for about 92 USD (720 HKD) last week Haven't tried using it yet in my HD2 yet, but probably will so I can try dualboot WP7 and Android
Yes I got one when I ordered and it was back ordered without any indication of time lines. Now they've put a couple of months on it for some reason.
Anyway, back to the topic. Why isn't my phone working with 32GB microSD card? I had a similar problem with my Sandisk (used with stock v1.66 ROM) and bought this Lexar hoping it would be ok with my phone. Any ideas? Tried reformatting it using the phone utility for compatibility reasons.

Absolutely not. Size doesn't affect the speed and neither does class. The only time you'll notice speed differences between classes is when you transfer media to or from the card while it's *NOT* in the phone. Otherwise they're all the same even though people say it feels faster/slower.
A little more info - I've found a way to get sense to semi behave like normal.
Once the phone boots I have to leave it for 3 or 4 minutes while the phone is very sluggish and not scroll or use sense (else it crashes) and after 3 or 4 minutes it then settles down and seems to act as usual. Except that for some reason the photos on the Footprints tab are all whited out.
Try reflashing a clean new ROM. I was using LeeDrOiD HD 1.5.1 and had loaded a bunch of apps and games on my Desire HD and sense got sluggish scrolling between screens. Now I've loaded LeeDrOiD HD 2.0.0 ROM with his latest kernal and loaded back more than 90% of my games/apps/widgets and the phone scrolls through home screens without a hitch. I kept everything the same on my MicroSD card I only reflashed the ROM and did a complete factory wipe in Clockwork Recovery.
I'd recommend to a Nandroid backup of your current ROM in Clockwork Recovery, then after that do the Clockwork Recovery factory wipe and flash a new clean custom ROM or Stock ROM. See if you are now getting much better speeds. If not just Wipe again in Clockwork and restore your backup then look for other options. If you still have slow speeds maybe try copy everything off the MicroSD card to your PC then reformat the card and copy everything back.
So, due to great confusion, I'm sitting here with an unopened Sandisk Class 2 32GB card, a Lexar Class 10 32GB Card and, arriving tomorrow, a Sandisk Class 4 32GB card.
What's the consensus from those who already have the Lexar MicroSDHC card? Should I open and install or wait for the class 4 ?
(Running Android NAND)
I used a sandisk 8gb class 4 when I first installed wp7 but I thought I should make a dual boot and I bought a samsung 32gb class 10 microsdhc.
wp7 couldn't load and I got a message the memory card wasn't compatible...
right now I use android and everything works like a charm but I would love to do that dual boot.
I there anyway to fix that except buying a new card?
format card with SDFormatter v3.0, insert to phone and do hard reset with Volume Up and Down together and power up... maybe not help but you can try...
i use Sandisk 32 gb class 2 and card is very fast and stable under WP7, faster than Sandisk 8g class4 from original HTC 7 Pro device

There is a huge amount of info out there on what cards to buy, but none of it is 100%, it still might not work, and going for a class 10 card was probably the big mistake, dont get me wrong, some folk have them working, but generally WP7 tends to like class 2/4 and potentially 6 the best, its believed its to do with random access speeds which are usually lower on higher class devices
tthere has been some development with cards that install but sometimes reboot, some small reg tweaks have had a positive effect, but cards that do not work at all is going to be very unlikely to get working. you can format it all you like but the installer will clear all partition tables and set new partitions up, meaning it wont make much if any difference.
ive spent all week looking at new cards, crystal disk mark seems to be a good judge, but if you dig through the net at revews and forums you'll see why its very much hit or miss, the bench marks are all different. Bt the more you look at and the more a given card looks ok, the higher the chances of it working. Ill tell you saturday if mines any good, but i physically couldnt do any more in identifying a working card, so its an educated guess
in answer to your question, no, you need to install WP7 first, then partition it and install SD android, so unless you can get WP working you'll not dual boot them, send the card back, say it wasnt working with your camera or something
