[Q] Which ROM to use? - Epic 4G General

Hey guys. I'm looking for feedback since I'm STILL a Hero user and idk what you guys have been up to I'll likely root g/f's Epic after she decides to keep it and I was wondering what's everyone's favorite ROM to use and what should I be looking to do with this thing to help make it better? Thx

I like bonsai rom v1.1.4 on the dk28 froyo leak. To speed the phone up if you decide to flash the froyo leak is to change the filing system from Rfs to ext4 and then disable journaling. That is my setup and it's very snappy and fast. But this is only available if you use the dk28 rom. Have fun flashing

I was running Bonsai w/ext4 for a while and it was good but I went back to 2.1 and I'm really happy. 3D games don't play very well on dk28 roms (especially Dungeon Defenders), and gaming is one of the reasons I went with a Galaxy S. Plus I've been getting really good battery life with Syndicate and Phoenix kernel and its really fast. GPS worked 100% on DK28, and strangely enough 100% on 2.1...

Your best bet is to try a couple before you get commited to one...All of them are stable, and Ive tested all but 2 of the newer ROMs.

This is my favorite ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=904787

We've had numerous "best ROM" / "which rom" threads, and they always turn out the same way. No one rom is the best, but one may fit your needs more than others.

Please search before making a new thread. There are numerous threads discussing this same topic.

I'm looking for a new ROM, fast, stable, not flashy

I don't care for all the flashy things, I just want something that's pretty fast and won't feel sluggish after a week.
check out HTCClay's SuperFast.
Probably the most simple and stable Donut-based rom out right now, its my daily-use rom.

I agree Dwang is fast and stable and not flashy at all. SuperFast is fast but its very flashy.
IMO Cyanogen's mods have always been the fastest and most stable. I flashed a lot of roms on my G1 but I always kept coming back till I realized it was exactly what I needed. Stuck with it since. Even the new eclair build is very fast and most of the bugs have been sorted out. However it's still a test build so it's up to you! Good Luck!

I'm trying out the ZX sense based builds - I must say that HTC really helped the platform as I like these apps more than the stock ones!

superfast without a doubt is the overall best donut rom and while it is flashy its done very tastfully and is a very appealing rom

A test to compare roms

I was thinking about either me or someone else starting a test to compare all the ROMs. This way people can just look and compare to see what ROM they want, whether it be for performance, battery, ect. I was think about creating something like the attached table on how to compare the ROMs and was wondering would this cover everything? And would anyone like to help?
additional details on test:
The ROMs will have nothing installed them except SETCPU
All ROMs will be using sense except CM6
ROMS that have preset profiles can will be used e.g. DC battery profile during the battery test, but this will also be noted in additional details

If you do, share your results with ROM Watch, it'd be a good matrix to include somewhere, especially if you do a "what works/what doesn't" thing.

Yea I have a section on the spread sheet that contains features that work. All I have under it so far is Camera, 4G, Bluetooth. But will put more columns on if anyone has any suggestions.
I believe they are all going to be pretty much similiar for the moment. CM6 might be the most different since it is built from the ground up while the other ones are all built on the same thing.
Is anyone interested in helping me test some of the ROMs?

A quick outline that you can use:
Name of the ROM
Version of the ROM
Summary
Kernel you are running with your ROM
Any extra modifications that doesn't come with the ROM
Pros
Cons
Any screen shots if available
ROM: Onyx
Version: 4.2
Summary:Basically a smooth Froyo based ROM developed by Team Whiskey. Its the TouchWiz-less brother ROM of Obsidian ...the best ROM i ever had....in my opinion the best one out there.
Kernel: ULF(Universal Lag-Fix) - Ported from the i9000 ROMS...
Extra Mods: BlackFroyo Theme, JI6 modem
Pros: Too many to list....never had a problem with freezing and the ROM is super fast without any lagfixes and is lightning with a lagfix..it even comes with the modified ULF..thanks to the ULF kernel....you may pick the lagfix you want....ranging from OCLF, simple EXT2 or EXT4, are even Overkill JFS which i am running now.
Cons: I was 1/20 people that got their internal SD cards wiped...this was a kernel issue not a ROM issue...the warning was present but not attention grabbing....a PC backup is recommended.

Not works :/ and is activated.
I have taboonay 3.0.1d
you should have posted this under the taboonay thread, not make a thread for it....
in the picture I can't read the read text but looks like it working to me, and by the themed icons looks like your running iceylicious rom, or you added other rom mods to your taboonay install. And it is a huge no, no to create your own thread complaining, instead posting in the appropriate roms thread.

Also if you install a different roms button mods on your taboonay install this can definitely break the ring... and again to better clarify on my last post, threads are for tutorials, roms, development, kernels, ect... for developers... if you want to report a bug or complain, you post in that roms thread, this will most likely be deleted, and you have a better chance of getting help if you posted this as a reply in the taboonay thread, some of the xda devs and veterans, this is one of there biggest things they hate, especially for xda staff. They have this huge video, instructions and rules to keep people from doing this, they explain it in detailed how things work here to make sure people understand, and to keep things organized, do a fresh install of taboonay following the instructions carefully, also read the entire original post in till you understanding instructions, I use taboonay, and if you install it correctly it will run pretty much perfect.

What's a good stable ROM to revive my S4?

Hi Folks,
I have a bone stock S4 that has served me well for the past 4 or whatever years. I have tried resetting the phone several times, but it just feels sluggish in normal tasks, and it really shouldn't.
Stability is most important to me though, and admittedly the stock Sprint ROM is not great in that regard. No random reboots or anything, but just slow as hell!
Any input would be great, not sure if anyone is even still using an S4 on Sprint

I'm using a 720T on Boost, but I've been getting really good results from the PACman Lollipop ROM. May be because I live in an area with mediocre signal strength, but network stability has been a pretty big issue with a lot of other ROMs. My phone just seems to work best with PAC. Here's a link:

Thanks for the intel guys
It looks like WickedX is still being supported - I am going to give it a try and see if it works well for me!
I had PAC on my old S3 and I loved it, will give that a go as well

Cyanogyn mod is a great rom despite the unfortunate fact that it shut down and is not receiving updates anymore. Thumbs up if this helps
