please make making a tethering app and wifi router a first priority in for the wp7... developers
MOD EDIT: Tethering instructions at post 11 onwards
The chances of this happening without 3rd party socket support is extremely low if not impossible. Until Microsoft allows sockets tethering will have to come from Microsoft themselves.
i though that that the phone would be capable , but that there would be no support or apps unless the cell service requested
That rumor turned out to be false. At launch WP7 will not tether but I'm sure we will see an update within the next couple of months that will add it. Since updates come from Microsoft directly I don't think carriers can block it.
I wouldn't say that carriers can't block it. If you look at the iPhone, it was blocked in the carrier settings on the phone.

Also, the carriers has a way detect you are using the phone as tethering or web-browsing, if your data plan doesn't include tethering, the tethering feature means nothing.
Doing some research to upgrade from my dumb ass x10 (was my in between phone) and found on Optus Australia site that Omnia 7 can be used as a tether, so I'm guessing that they are not blocking it.
But hey who knows till I get this next week bundled with an Xbox Kinect - woot.

There's a 99% chance that the site is wrong. WP7 does not support tethering of any kind right now.

Yes I know wp7 does not support tethering now, but it will.
Optus have decided not to charge for the service like some providers do/will and I like that

I tether occasionally with my ATT Tilt running WM6.5.
I am about to receive my Focus this week, and I am confident that there will be the ability to tether this phone soon. History is on my side. In the meantime, I will pop my sim card into the Tilt if I need to tether.
The iPhone was a locked OS at first, the jailbreaks came soon, as did tethering.
As far as ATT being able to detect when it tethers, I doubt it.
In the past, the theory was they could detect the user agent string for the web browser as "not a mobile browser" but since the WP7 browser is a full browser, I see it as a simple matter for the tethering app to replace the user agent string on the fly, so the data stream appears to be for the bundled browser and not a desktop browser. Your laptop will browser will give you a normal experience on each page.
ATT has a money clamp on the data usage anyway, so I doubt they really care that much since as you would hit the 5 GB limit of the laptop tethering plan, you would have paid $65 ($25 for 2GB+$10 for 1GB+$10 for 1GB+$10 for 1GB). They have lost nothing.
How to use USB tethering on the Focus
Well I guess Optus weren't wrong - bit of a fiddly work-around - but hey it works.

Awesome news, if it works. Can anyone who has tested this confirm that it's working and also if you are still able to use the phone to receive texts/calls/etc? Thanks, and good find!
Can someone who's done this post the usb drivers that get downloaded? I'm running on windows server 2008 R2 and suspect that it's not pulling them down because of this. I switched the phone to tethering mode, but when it connects and tries to add the driver it doesn't pull anything down.
Does anyone know if there is currently a way to tether the HTC Surround to a laptop. Evidently there is a backdoor way to do this with a Samsung Focus. Is anyone working on this for the Surround?
Not at this point. I think there may be a backdoor way to activate it like in the Samsung.

Yes but we need it now!!
I can't even find any information regarding how to access the Diagnosis Mode in an HTC Surround... Do you know how to?
Thanks!
Wow...don't be impatient. ##3282# is the code for Field Test, but there's nothing there that we can use.

Yes, I am sorry. Is just that I really need tethering for work. And yesterday I lost my Samsung Focus, so I am with a Surround right now but I really do miss my Samsung...
Do you think that with the No Donuts update for WP7, we can have access via an HTC Surround?
Doubt it can be done backdoor...AT&T thinks data is gold and doesn't leave us a whole lot of options.
BTW, Just checked my feature options on AT&T, they have smartphone enterprise tethering listed as a data option (2GB for $60/mo.) If you are that desparate, you'll have to do it that way.

Thanks for the quick reply. That is not an option for me, because I live in Costa Rica, not in the US. Also, tethering here is free, I just pay 8 dollars fix and I have unlimited Data connection and tethering. I was doing just great with my Focus. I think my only option is to buy another Focus...
I hate HTC for not allowing this kind of things, and also for blocking the option to change Display language from English to Spanish. In the Focus you can do that with no problems...
Not HTC
It appears as though it is not HTC that is putting the blocks on, it is the carrier. That's just what I have been reading. I'm sure that there will be a way eventually, as there are strides being made to cracking htis thing wide open.

If it is a carrier subject, why the Samsung Focus is a complete different story also AT&T branded?
Good Point
Good Point, like I said, that's just what I've been reading. I think that it's definitely something that will be fixed, based on the large amount of interest in it though.
Thanks All For Jumping on This Topic
Well, it doesn't look like, at the moment, there is a fix for this - So, I guess folks will still have to use their Cellular Modems (if they have one) to get their PC up and connected when no WIFI spot is available. Oh, well.
Thanks
finally done
not easy way but it works!!!!! here
I've searched around on the threads and found some related items for HTC TP2 and HD7, but nothing that gets tethering working for HTC Trophy on Verizon in the US. Has anyone gotten this working? If so, how?
I would take it one farther and say I can't find anything that even shows tethering working on any version of the Trophy.
When I plug my trophy into windows 7 and start the DF Router program I only get 1 device in device manager, and that device is the HTC diagnostics interface according to the HTC drivers, there is no HTC modem to be found. If anyone has this working please let us know.
Has anyone found anything about this?? I keep getting just the HTC Diagnostic Interface (Com5) but no modem. Any ideas?
I was considering getting this phone, and was wondering if WMWifiRouter would work on it like it does on my HTC Touch Pro 2 (after installing ICSInstall.cab). It uses WM 6.1 so I am not sure if it is compatible, BUT if you google that particular file and install it, and it makes a difference to what you are seeing in regards to your computer at least seeing the phone's modem, report back!
I have tethering working on my Trophy using "DF Router". It was working for the past few month even after NODO upgrade, however there is a recent update label "HTC update" that I think may have stopped tethering working probably for me. Not sure if it is happening to anyone else?
What steps did you use to tether? I tried following the directions for tethering to the "t" and I never got it to work. Maybe I already had the HTC update installed.
After I got DFRouter on the phone, I switched it to router mode from zune mode. It restarted the phone. Then I shut the data off and went back into DFRouter and selected HTC Modem. I plugged it into the computer and all I get is the HTC diagnostics. I really need to tether for work so it looks like I'll have to fire up my LG fathom to get internet.
Wasn't it announced that this would be a feature of Mango?
Yep, hopefully there will be a hack so you won't have to pay the outrageous cost of the carriers tethering per month.

yes and i believe it is, however it's something the carriers are going to have to "unlock" w/ their customized ROM so that they can build in whatever triggers they need to turn it on/off as you purchase/cancel the feature on your plan. God forbid they give it to you for free, y'know

exactly. However given what we've already seen in the past, they apparently now have the ability to detect if you're doing it and either retroactively charge you, auto-add tethering to your plan, or threaten termination of service unless you purchase the tethering plan... sucks all ways.
I've searched. Only found one nobody post saying it wasn't capable hardware wise... Is that really true. And if so, why can't it handle it. Imo, it should be able too.... Really want wp7 hotspot device.....
Don't believe it... Will only be a matter of time until an app is available...
I agree.. it's all a matter of apps now. Apparently, the MANGO release will give developers more access to the 'guts' of the O/S, so we should start seeing apps with more functionality than before.

It tethers fine, you just need to use the built in MFG application to change the USB port mode to QC composite.
Instructions are here:
http://flopek.wordpress.com/2010/11/25/tethering-instructions-for-the-lg-quantum-on-att-usa/
That's insane I had no idea these can tether. I'm liking my Quantum more and more everyday. I'm a big accidental LG fan.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA Premium App
I was able to install the modem without issue, and my computer sees it. However the connection is immediately refused. Apparently AT&T is blocking this in the U.S.A. At least in Minnesota.
It's kind of annoying way to do it though. Not too thrilled about entering a code and password everytime I would want to tether.
Really looking for something like Win Mo 6.5 equavalent to WiFi Router.
How about on PetroCanada or Speakout
I have the Quantum and PetroCanada UMB and I tried everything on that above link to get it to work but can't! The USB modem drivers installed correctly but I don't know the correct settings to get the phone to tether properly on the internet and I've tried so many combinations! Can somebody help me out? A WIFI Hotspot update sure would be good right now to avoid the whole problem altogether!!!
add a string in the advanced tab
Did you do the init string in the modem setup?
AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","isp.cingular"
maybe a different isp string in Canada
I lost the ability to tether with Mango. My wifes phone is still on Nodo, and that phone can tether fine with the QC composite mode. Can other people on Mango still tether? I upgraded to Mango beta with the legit developer release, and then to Mango after it went RTM(never rolled phone back to nodo first).
Also on a side note, I still cannot connect to hidden wifi SIDs, and I see other people with the Quantum have the same problem. Seems like the OEM needs to enable this with Mango for it to work. Can anyone else use hidded wifi SIDs? My + icon is missing under advanced. Wondering if the route I took to Mango didn't update something.

Still no hidden SSID support with the LG Quantum.
As for Mango tethering, you're missing one more update after Mango RTM. Connect to Zune again, and check for updates. You should get an LG-specific update. That will update the USB tethering functionality in the phone for Mango.

The update is definately not available for all Quantum users.
I have AT&T and live in the United States and am not able to get the LG update.
Why everyone doesn't take the 5 minutes to go into User CP and set their carrier and country is beyond me. IMO, it should be a requirement before posting. More than half the posters in this thread haven't done it.

You might have to go in the registry and make sure your carrier is set to ATT-US. If it's unbranded, or if that value is not filled in, then it won't work.

I actually dropped the service on my phone.
It's not that I didn't love Windows Phone 7 with Mango. Work bought me an iPhone 4S with a new number and they pay the monthly bill. So, I ported my personal number to Google Voice, so I can use it on my iPhone along with the number they provided. Free vs monthly bill. Free wins almost everytime.
I wouldn't think that service would be required to get an LG update, but since the carriers push the updates out, maybe it does. I guess I will know for sure when Apollo starts getting pushed out. Or it might be one of those things where it is going to take 30 days to push it out to everyone.
Nice job getting your info updated.

Same question here. I can not find the tethering fuction either.
I can't seem to find it either. The guy in this link thinks that the option is enabled by firmware.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=17926208&postcount=5
If no-one with a DVP can access this setting, it's possible Dell may not have enabled this yet in the firmware.

Hope Dell will be working on some firmware updates
Most unfortunate update(Mango). After all the hype the features are incomplete.
Now I am feeling sorry that I ever bought Samsung Focus.
No + Sign
Bought one unlocked for 300$, has the mango udpate, but no + sign for Hidden n/w's. It sure is painful, there is no point using data plan while in office/home. any idea when is the next update coming?
I recall reading something about the version of a certain piece of hardware Dell choose to include in the phone. The particular chip (Qualcomm I believe) doesn't allow for broadcasting of N band wireless networks and doesn't enable recognition of hidden WiFi networks, thus no tethering and only public wireless networks for now. Again this is just what I've seen her and there so don't quote me on it haha.
I've heard talk about a firmware work-around despite hardware limitations so there is some hope, but I'm not going to get my hopes up for now.
Sent from my Venue Pro using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
yup me too read about the hardware article...its sad that one of the initial flagship windows phones doesnt have much on hardware terms...btw tethering is possible through the em app...you can search through xda to do it...but hidden networks i doubt anymore...dont think they will be releasing a new firmware anytime soon
No more updates
seems like there isn't going to be any udpate dell discontinued the phone.
