Hi guys and girls,
My names Karl and I hope you can help.
I got the phone yesterday via a three contract but I'm having some issues already.......the camera in any recording format is extremely jumpy. It even shutters in the video. From what I've read here and on the web, its a common issue supposedly fixed via a ota update!? I obviously don't have it. I only have it temp rooted, and I'm on stock 3 Rom. Hope you Can help.
Karl.

From what you have said, you dont have the camera fix OTA update. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how badly you would have been wiped out by the update) its no longer available

lillysdaddy177 is right, The update was removed because too many bugs came up with it, but the camera was improved with it for sure.
For now we are stuck waiting for a new update from HTC, but for the time being formatting your SD cards to FAT32 32k cluster size seems to help with the random freezes even though it still happens sometimes but less often. The slowdown in poor lighting conditions still happens and hopefully the next update will fix this.
Thanks for replying.
I hope they do sort it out,as the camera is one of the main selling points for me ( capturing my one yo daughters random moments is essential.)

Could you be a little more specific about the problem? Before the update I only had problems with 720 p recording, the lower resolutions worke without issue, so the problem may be caused by something else...
As stated on my original post, the phones just over a day old.
I have no after market apps installed, and again as stated it lags during ALL recording formats.

Seems the camera is very sensitive to lighting conditions, so enabling the flash help if the objects your recording are close. Try to record outside when it's sunny and bright and see how that goes.
Yeah too bad this issue exists since the camera is a big selling point but at the end of the day it's still a cell phone. Can a dedicated camera make calls, play games, browse internet... lol

I've been getting a lag in my video's filmed at 720p quality from my Desire HD
Youtube video of test footage watch?v=x_OLIbLkUWk
Just as it hits 0:13 there is lag which is native on the phone video aswell.
I've filmed quite a bit since them and do get these laggy intervals when filming at 720p quality.
Am I seriously just going to have to accept defeat and film at 800x480?
Any known fixes?

I hope not. I recently got myself a brand new DHD, and can confirm i am experiencing the same issues when recording video -LAG.
I have no idea what the issue could be, I’m thinking maybe the mmc card could be the issue if its only 2x, i'd imagine 720p recoding will require higher speed mmc cards – im using the one which came with the mobile.
lower class of micro sd card perhaps?
With 1.5 GB of RAM, you'd think the DHD would be able to cache a whole lot more than 13 seconds of 720p 3GP video...
I don't remember where, but this has been discussed before, and they didn't think it was the memorycard that was the root of the problem.
To be honest i havent experience lag of any kind when videoing at 720p! Maybe a background task took some resources at the same time! Just a thought.
Have you enabled USB Debugging in the settings?
Yes I have.

Have you installed Visionary? I experienced the same thing and when I removed it, the lag was gone. Now I have 'USB debugging' disabled and no lag.
I have a class 10 32gb card which probably isn't causing the problem. My phones not rooted, haven't installed visionary. Plus this occurred when my DHD was vanilla.

My Desire Z sometimes lag in 720p recording too.
I noticed that refocusing when recording cause the lag, but it still lags sometimes even I didn't touch anything.
are you running a live wallpaper, cause in tests i have done running a live wallpaper in the background have made my desire hd lag a lot.

I disabled Live Wallpaper but still the same.
it's like 10~20second per lag.

will try to flash another ROM this weekend to see if there is any difference
Um.. 1.5GB of internal storage, not RAM. The phone only(!) has 768MB RAM.

Not completely sure this will help, but what about formatting the SD card in 32 kb sectorsize?
It helped me, when my video recording was "stuttering"
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
I'm using the one that come with the phone, it's already 32KB
Hi, I experienced the same thing : Yahoo mail was runnning background
I also experience lag. Someone needs to inform HTC imo.
i have a working fix besides the 32k cluster format, which simply improves the sd card performance
i simply go to free advanced and i hit end all tasks (the quick version) before launching the camera
it works everytime and if i dont't apply it my film lags, its clearly a multi tasking issue something running in the background causing it
but try my method it works
i tried your solution hamdir and it actually does work! I'l test it some more tomorrow because right now its too cloudy and dark outside which isnt optimal conditions for recording with this phone.
edit: the sun came out so i took another clip. no lag
i think its a certain app that may be causing this. is there a way we can pinpoint exactly which one?
i doubt its one app, i don't know if maybe its htc sense and its sync settings or any app that runs in the background like messengers, either way i can't be bothered looking for it the solution is working and very easy
hopefully gingerbread will eventually solve it, since it has a feature that cleans applications footprint
i just noticed my solution was added to the compilation of DHD issues thread i will also mention it in the camera guide i'm currently preparing
Theres alot of chatter on this. This is the deal breaker for some of us so please post if there is a solution at all on any version of froyo. Some say the camera blur is on all the leaks and the final EB13. Is that true?
I just tested it...
My camera was extremely unusable just now. But yesterday, I was able to record a basketball game perfectly indoors.
This was not present in dk28.
Dk28 actually had great lowlight useability... I recorded a few videos out in the park around midnight without flash and they were easily viewable. Flash was just a plus.
But now seeing this problem I might actually go back to dk28...I realllllly don't want to, but ima need the camera to work in low light...
I thought it was just recording laggy, but the playback was exactly the same

I wonder if anybodys tried it with the OC kernel...it could possibly make up for the lag that is present. I don't think there will be a solution here on xda anyone soon, IMHO. This all seems to be a camera driver issue as I believe samsung changed the inherent behavior of the camera.
but this is all speculation of course

You know... I thought it was just me aswell. I reflashed the samsung tool again. After a full boot up, launched camera. It was actually better but not eclair better, then I did the prl update and profile update, reboot and now its it worse! This is actualy good news. Meaning that its just a software bug.

oh yeah. I used 1.2 genocide. No help, just as blurry.
inconsistent
The camera on the Epic has been inconsistent even before upgrading to Android 2.2. Sometimes the images rival a good point-n-shoot but only when there is plenty of light. The fact that the camera sticks out and collects smudges just from holding the phone does not help.
I have had better luck playing with the ISO and other settings. Even just leaving the camera in Macro seems to produce better results.
Is there a better camera app?
I wonder if anyone's had any luck installing the eclair camera app?

I switched back to 2.1 because of it using odin. 2.2 saves video in mp4 format, 2.1 saves video in 3gp. That may have something to do with it.

I was running the stock DK28 rom downloaded from Google when it was first leaked and I had zero problems with the camera.
I own a pretty dimly lit store, and I took several videos in there with the phone that I posted to YouTube showing off our products, with DK28. Now with EB13, the camera is useless in the same store with the same light.
This was not a problem with DK28. It's not Froyo. It's EB13 that's the problem.

thats my fear aswell. But sprint and samsung just pulled the update from their sites. So that means they do know of these issues anf realize it has to be pulled and fixed. But comparing eclair to froyo camera performance is night and day. Pretty much useless at low light. I need low light. But I will never buy htc just because they update faster. Htc has their own awful hardware problens like under performing gpu and cpu.

how u do a master reset? U mean the 768 dial code? Or odin flash?
Ever since I updated to gingerbread, my camera takes HORRIBLE pictures if I'm in a setting that has even the smallest amount of low light. My camera used to perform 100 times better than this. The flash used to illuminate small rooms fairly well. Now it is terrible. Even if I turn the brightness setting of the camera to the highest setting, it makes no change. I did experience this issue with the Shift roms as well, but I thought it would not have been a problem with the official release. Is anyone else having similar issues? Forgive me if this has been discussed. I searched the forums, but could not find anythig. I know brightness issues have been reported, but I believe they were all just in reference to the screen brightness.
I am also having issues after the update... Two things I noticed, there is a delay in the time it takes for the phone to actually take a picture and the phone has been randomly been crashing (restarting) after taking a picture..
Not fond of the update..

My issue last night with my camera is I was trying to use it as a backup for a wedding until I got batteries to swap out of my Canon. I tried using it in low light and got a FC 4 separate times. Not just a FC but a complete reboot. There is also the thing of my brightness setting going to max after using the camera. It didnt just happen on my camera, also happened on my wifes and she is on a different ROM from me. I use Miks and she is on OMJ, well almost the same ROM. Anyway it was annoying waiting for the camera to reset and Yeah I did miss some of the shots that shouldnt have been missed. That'll teach me to bring extra batteries for my Canon.
In the spirit of GB and camera issues, I recently had a message saying my drivers were missing. Yay. Had to reboot, and it cost me a picture of my aunts ceremony. *sigh*

For low-light pics, try changing your ISO settings from Auto to ISO200 or even 400. It will make pics a bit grainier, so experiment a bit. I normally run 200 without issue.

If you have an unrooted phone with Froyo, just search xda for Unrevoked3. It will explain everything and its simple. If you are unrooted with Gingerbread, you are out of luck at the moment. I was already rooted and installed a rooted gingerbread Rom.
Sent from my HTC Evo
Hi,
Since going to Sense gingerbread ROMs, my camera has been horrible in low light pictures. It seems like the flash is firing just a little bit too early. By the time the shutter opens, the flash has pretty much done its thing, and the picture comes out very dark. I have tried every single combination of Sense GB ROM and kernel that is currently available, and I get the same result with every single one. I have also tried all of the cameras available in the Market. I get the same poor results with every single one of them. The only way that I can get a decent low light picture is to flash back to a Froyo ROM, or over to an AOSP ROM. The pictures taken in any Froyo or AOSP ROM come out good and bright in all conditions. I think that there must be some sort of incompatibility with Gingerbread ROMs and the camera in my phone.
But of course just like every other thing with these phones, not everyone is having problems. But there are quite a few people that are. I've been trying to work out whether it is some sort of software issue, or hardware. We all know that there are four different hardware versions on the Evo. And from what I can determine, there are two different types of cameras in use. I started a little survey in one of the ROM threads in development. But I thought that I'd move it up here so that more people could see it and participate. I am hoping that if you know for sure that you are having the dark low light photos problem or if you know for sure that you're not having the problem that you could post information in this thread about the ROM you're running, your hardware version, the camera that you have in your phone, and whether you're having the problem or not. To determine the camera in use, do the following:
Using root explorer navigate to sys/ you will see android_camera and android_camera2. Android_camera is the rear camera. Go into that folder, hold over sensor until you see the options menu. Scroll down to View As Text and that opens the file with Camera brand and model number. Post that information to the thread, along with the other information requested above. I'll start:
ROM: Classic 0.0.4
Hardware: 0003
Camera: samsung S5K3HIGX 8M
I do have the issue
Thank you to anyone that responds to this.

Right. Not everyone on GB has the problem though. I am trying to find something that everyone with the problem has in common. It's not the camera itself. Maybe it's the camera and hardware combination. That's what I'm hoping to determine with this thread.
Tried everything you have tried above with no good results. Sprint store is a waste of time don't bother. I hope ICS makes things better.

I plan on telling them about it working well on Froyo. I restored my nandroid from right after I rooted and took a few pictures. Then I went back to Classic and took the same pictures. The difference is huge. But yea, cannot mention AOSP at all.
Also, I'm not unrooting my phone. I installed the latest stock GB ROM. Hopefully they won't dig too deeply into that. I've had really good luck with this non-corporate Sprint store down the road. Hopefully my luck will continue today. Though I'm not exactly sure what I expect to get out of it. I mean I really don't think that the problem is fixable on the phone. But I'll feel better once I've exhausted all possible options.

Sounds like he was trying to avoid addressing your problem by making it look like a non problem. I'm guessing possibly in front of other people so it looked like you were just wining. If they can't replicate it, it must not be happening right?

The Sprint store guy admitted that he could see the issue. He had an older Evo around with Froyo on it and he compared and sure enough, there was a big difference. He said that the only thing he could really do would be to order a replacement, but that the replacement might have the same problem or some other problem. So at least he was honest with me.

How about posting your hardware, camera, and ROM...
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
Multiple threads on this topic, but posting here since this is the most recent.
First, the basics:
Evo 4G rooted
still running standard Sprint Rom (basic tweaks, nothing serious)
Camera Zoom FX 3.2.2
Yesterday I realized that I'm having this issue as well... pictures are certainly coming out darker than before. This isn't the first time it's occurred, but up until now didn't realize it was reoccurring thing. It's further exaggerated when shooting from a lower light area towards a brighter area (example: from inside a car of something outside). No big shock there.
I installed Camera Zoom a few months ago in hopes of increasing the quality of pics (over the stock camera app). Overall, it was very successful. However, for the most part I take pics indoors or under a decent amount of overhead/ambient light. Thus far, no problems. But it seems that the increase in pic quality with Camera Zoom has also brought an increase in darkness to these pics in certain situations. Not so good.
Will try to find an answer.
When taking pictures in low light situations with flash (it seems low battery enhances the probability) sometimes the pictures get artifacts (white lines close to the top/bottom of the picture).
And sometimes the phone gets stuck and reboots. The camera tends to make clicking noises right before it reboots that are louder than when usually focusing.
Look at the screenshot and at the end you can see the reboot. You can see a sudden battery level drop after the reboot.
I don't know if this is hardware or software related but a user suggested this to be a problem with the stock camera app.
I had this problem on two devices already and it seems to be on all devices, maybe just rarer for some people? Not sure.
If you have this problem vote for the following issue and hope google fixes it:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=49702&#makechanges
I had something similar happen to me once last week. I was viewing my photos in the stratosphere mode and would hit the back button. I had to repeatedly do this to scroll to the next images after viewing them. When hitting the back button it would take me back to take a picture, but one time, it took me to a blank screen with the camera buttons still working. I ended up needing to restart my phone. Not sure what happened there.
I have only seen this once. It didn't occur again, so I haven't chased it down
Ditto only happened once in the first week of using and has never happened again

The device was a little hot but not as hot as when in gaming and in gaming it never reboots.
Look at the screen shot and at the end you can see the reboot. What I'm worried about is the sudden battery level drop after the reboot.
Are these reboots hardware or software related? Should I get a replacement?

I seem to have the same issue. So far, it has only occurred when I am trying to take a photo with the flash on. One more observation: seems to happen more often if the battery is low. However, both of us might be having defective devices, as it doesn't seem to be a common issue looking the forums here.
No solution found so far. Tried a factory reset. Tried using another camera app. Nothing helped. Might try flashing a custom ROM.

All oft the things you described apply to my situation too. Also I noticed that pictures tend to have artifacts (white stripes close to the top/bottom). They always have the same distance from top/bottom but their length differs.
Also after the forced reboot there sometimes appears an extra picture in the gallery that is fully grey.

I don't seem to have the artifact problem that you described. Also there is a creaking sound sometimes just before it restarts.
Have you tried flashing a custom ROM? Did it help? Otherwise RMA is possibly the way to go.
I ordered the phone from US using a mail forwarding service, so an rma will cost me another $100 or so. If you or anyone else can confirm that it is definitely a hardware issue which can be resolved by getting a replacement, i might go for it.

I was on AOKP PUB Krait 05/02 by Stevespear and Harsh Kernel and I did have a reboot there once too. Also this is already my third Nexus 4 since I had to replace it 2 times due to issues (bottom side creaking 1st device / yellow blotches 2nd device) and this one really looks good only this camera reboot issue is left.
But my first phone did have the issue too, I didn't have the 2nd phone long enough so didn't see it happen there. I have no idea if it is a hardware or software issue but my bet is that all Nexus 4's have that issue.
It just seems that it appears rather rarely and most people don't notice it. Or it could be that the voltage is too low and that would explain why it happens on some phones more than on others since not all chips are equal. I was wondering if somehow setting the flash to be weaker so it draws less power would solve this. But I am just a user and don't really have an idea.
PS: I won't get my phone replaced since I can live with this issue (it happens rather rarely) and I went through 2 replacements to get this device which is close to perfect but I wouldn't mind if someone came up with a solution.
That makes me feel really lucky to have gotten a nearly perfect device. Anyway, guess we just have to live with it then. Lowering the flash intensity sounds like a good idea. Will check if some rom/kernel/app can do it for me.

Having the same problem here on 4.2.1 and 4.2.2. I think it might be the buggy stock camera/gallery app because I can't replicate the problem on the Camera Zoom FX app.
Edit: I remember having this problem on 4.2.1 and then clearing the gallery app data and not ever seeing the issue happen again. I will try the same on 4.2.2 and see if it fixes it too.
I added a link to the issue on OP guess that is all I can do.

I have had this issue with the Camera FX Zoom app also. So, at least in my case, I guess it's a hardware/camera driver issue. Anyway, I also cleared the gallery app data a few days back and haven't faced this issue since then, but haven't taken enough pics with flash to confirm that the issue is truly gone.

Has the issue disappeared after clearing the app data for you? I certainly have not faced any reboots since doing it.
