Droid x vs. Fascinate - Android Software Development

Which is better??
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App

Hands down: Fascinate. It's faster, screen is bigger and better and it's mod-able

Fascinate has bigger screen?
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App

Im kinda new at android...wat does mod-able mean? I can take bing off?
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App

Samsung fanboy much? At least get the facts right. Droid X has a 4.3 with a higher resolution, Fascinate 4.0 and lower resolution. Droid X has the TI OMAP 1Ghz processor, Fascinate has a 1Ghz Hummingbird. Both have 512MB of memory. Droid x has an 8MP camera, Fascinate has a 5MP.
Droid X has the Fascinate beat on all levels except the GPU and even then, the DX has a dedicated GPU. Just depends on what you are looking for and what suits you.

I have carried both and prefer the Fascinate and the X and prefer the fascinate. The X does have the bigger screen and higher resolution because it is a few pixels longer to get it to a different aspect ratio. That being said I believe it is only a 54 pixel difference and the Fascinate has a higher pixel density. I say all this to say, the fascinate has a nicer screen and I prefer the size.
I feel like it performs better.
The camera is a lower resolution but I think it takes better looking photos. I am not the only person to believe this. I read a blog article that agreed with this point (they compared all of the big android devices and the iPhone but I can't remember which blog.)
Finally, if you plan on keeping it stock I might say go with the X simply because of Bing. This might be corrected with 2.2 but who knows. If you are going to mod (custom roms) the Fascinate is more open but working with Samsung stuff is a disadvantage whole motorola has to deal with the locked bootloader. As far as modding goes I give the edge to the fascinate but they both have flaws and are destroyed by HTC on this front.
You might be better off to wait on the Thunderbolt.

Vibrant OR Droid X????

I will have a droid x tomorrow as it was a replacement. In the mean time I bought a vibrant. I love the V but I also love the X!
I know this is V forum but I will also post this in the X forums to see if anyone there had to make a choice like mine!
If you had to choose, which one and why? WHY did you choose the V?
I assume that by being on XDA you'll want to play around with the phone and custom roms, the Droid X's locked bootloader will dampen the fun. Who knows when people will crack it, might be a month, might be a year.
Agreed with what tissimo said. In addition to that, Vibrant offers Super AMOLED Screen (colors are amazing), and 1GHz Hummingbird Processor. Which are pretty much the best specifications for an Android phone at the moment. Not to mention but its rumored that Verizon will be killing "unlimited data" in the future, so T-Mobile has the upper hand if Verizon goes on with that plan of going on capped data plans.
The screen of the Vibrant is perfect. I think 4.3'' is too big. It feels bad in my pocket. The screen of the X is very close to the edge of the phone (scares me). the semi-blur UI sucks compared to TouchWiz. Having the ability to change settings on the notification bar on the Vibrant rocks (and music controls).
But like everyone has, and will say.... Motorola pissed off the android world when they locked their bootloader like it was the holy grail. I would never buy a phone that I could not flash a custom ROM... and you saw how long it took them to get eclair on the droid, laughable. THANK GOD those with a droid could flash a custom rom (yeah Motorola, that helped you a lot, all of these wonderful developers doing your job).
Well I think the Vibrant is just about the perfect screen size. The Droid X just seems too big. Also, the Vibrant will almost assuredly have CM6 before the Droid X, if the X even gets it at all!
^ sadly, it will not.
after 5 failed cliqs i will never buy another motorola phone.. so no droid x for me.

Haha yeah I was never really impressed with any of Motorolas more fairly recent (last 3-5 years) build quality. RAZR anyone?
Motorola can suck it. I had the Cliq and had nothing but issues with it, not to mention it was so hard to hack. Motoblur is a horrid piece of software and burns through your battery. The vibrant is 100x better IMO.
Short answer, the Vibrant is the current heavyweight champion of the world. Nothing is better.
I went with Vibrant because I felt it was the best phone at the time, and because I hate Verizon. I love the Vibrant despite some initial bugs.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I own a Vibrant and my co-worker just got a Droid X.
The screen alone on the V blows the X away, to top it off a unit with a 4" display just feels right, whereas 4.3" is overkill, the Droid X looks like a brick, but at the same token I am getting comments that my V is an iPhone rip-off.
As far as the performance is concerned, I felt the Vibrant was snappier especially with Launcher Pro instead of TouchWiz.
cons of X are: probably better support (maybe it will see Gingerbread), 2 noise canceling mics (although i dont know if they work good, Vibrant has 0), camera with dual flash.
Everything else goes to Vibrant......battery life (although i read X is also good), screen quality, size, speed, bluetooth 3.0 (whatever that does)...
X is already seeing updates with fixes, and will see 2.2 very soon........while 2.2 is also coming to Vibrant, nobody knows if its this month or maybe as late as November
I heard the camera is better on dx too. I think it comes down to what provider you can deal with. Verizon is pretty expensive.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Droid X doesn't have an ARM processor (fail)
What you should really be asking yourself is incredible vs vibrant. Droid x is cute, but its hardware is lacking compared to either of these other phones. Not to mention Motorola phones have been difficult to mod even before the bootloader was locked.
I have to give it to Motorola that they made android way more popular in the USA than it used to be, but for anyone interested in custom ROMs or developing, they just don't compare.

Vibrant is the heavyweight champ and literally weighs like nothing in your hand! All around such a great device!
I went into verizon the other day and played with the droid x for sum time and i have to say i didnt like it all that much. I have the vibrant and its perfect it gets a lil laggy sumtimes but what fones dont and if u root it and get setcpu runnin on it, it will be flawless trust me. and the Vibrant is Super AMOLED scratch resistant screen meanin u dont got to buy a screen protector
I'm down with both phones but once you play with the Vibrant's Amoled screen for a couple days it's difficult going back to LCD screens. It's that good.

Its about the same quality. More mps doesnt make it better. Vibrant has ton of in camera features, dont know about X
EDIT. iPhone, Sony, and Nokia cameras are the best on the market, the rest all have glitches here and there and all about the same quality....Vibrant camera is not sharp enough, maybe its a software glitch with auto focus or something...X camera pictures I believe come out noisy due to 8MP, Nexus One pictures lack color....

[Q] Which phone is better? Droid X or I9000?

I'm new to the forums. I can't decide yet which phone should i choose. Though i know here is Galaxys forum, but i'm glad to listen to your advices.
1.Screen SAMOLED VS 4.3 inch
2.GPU 540>530 I9000 is better But i wanna know how 540 much better than 530. Is that a large gap or just small?
3.Do you think that i9000 looks like a iphone? Droid x looks much better than i9000 Just outward appearance.
4.What about the cpu?
Plz help me to make a choice between two good devices THX a lot~~

In my opinion this really comes down to your choice of carriers and like or
dislike for slightly larger screens. Everything else is more or less kind of a wash.
The screens are comparable in quality, many will prefer the SAMOLED due to the
richer colors and better darks. Many will think the LCD on the Droid X is perfectly fine. I had a Nexus one prior to my Droid X and feel that the screens were comparable. Due to personal preference of size I pick the Droid X. I have gorilla hands so the extra space is welcomed when it comes to me using the phone.
As for the graphics processing:
Droid X /w SGX530 (13 MPolys/s, 500Mpx/[email protected])
Samsung I9000 /w SGX540 (28 MPolys/s, 1Gpx/[email protected]
While the 540 chip does kick up the graphics performance by quite a bit I feel that in the current software market it doesnt matter. Most games and emulators work without much of a hitch on the Nexus One which is pretty weak compared to the Droid X graphics, let alone the I9000. The Droid X handles graphics and benchmarks with ease. While the I9000 would play just as well as the Droid X but slam the crap out of it in benchmarks.
My point? Until we get software that actually uses the graphics horsepower we have it makes no difference. My quality of gaming is close to equal to the I9000 and is only slightly better than the Nexus One (Nexus has the occasional hiccup due to slower graphics).
In the end I feel it comes down to carrier preference, screen preference and feature preference. Aesthetics could come into play as well. I really like the way
the Droid X looks and feels.
Both phones do have a huge advantage over te snapdragon powered phones in that they have a whole separate GPU. The TI and hummingbird are basically equal as far as CPU'S te SGS maily pulls ahead bc of te GPU. However, not to slam the HTC phones but both the X and SGS have far superior CPU's compared to snapdragon. I will def say that the build quality of te motorola droid series are second to none. Mostly metal as well they come with guerrilla glass which is much stronger than normal glass found in cell phones. Also when we get the ability on the x i believe that the OC ability will be greater on the x if they original droid says anything about the processors ability. The D1 could have its stock clock speed almost tripled, not to say that the hummingbird cant be done that way either. Te snapdragon is a good CPU as far as application processing goes but doesn't hold a bar to the hummingbird or TI OMAP overall. It really all comes down to user choice. Motorola has shown strong support for the droid series bc the droid 1 has has 3 os upgrades (2.01, 2.1, 2.2) so i think they will continue to support there phones strongly. Good luck in ur choice!!

It comes down to what you like. I have the Droid X and Droix 1. My Droid was fast but the Droid X speed is amazing. As for the Sanding Galaxy S series they are great phones. A coworker has the T-mo version the Vibrant.
I do think it looks like the iPhone. When my coworker brought it I thought she had moved to Att. The phone seems no faster than my Droid X or even Droid 1. However the SuperAmoled screen is definitely crisper and more Vibrant.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
Is the text crisper? I thought SAMOLED's sub-pixel matrix left a slight color halo around sharp edges, like text (they compensate with beyer color contrast).
Thank you all guys' advises. I do love DROIDX and i believe there is no difference between two good devices. Droid X can run all the apps smoothly just like what I9000 can do. 540 is much better than 530 in data but there is a small gap in actual use.
I'm really disappointed in mto who just put efuse and 530 in droidx..
The eFuse so far has not been an issue at all. What makes you think it will become one?
-EDIT for clarity-
What I mean is, the eFuse is not some sort of "OMG you cannot mod this phone because it will brick itself forever!" kind of scenario. Its simply got a locked boot loader, so it will take a bit longer for it to be hacked and for smart people to figure out a way around that. We have root and we have SBF, and the two together gives you the ability to modify just about anything on the DroidX and fix it if you "break" it. So, whats the big deal?
i have the droid x and the samsung vibrant.....both are really nice phones.
the vibrant screen is more...well.....'vibrant', and i actually prefer it to the droid x screen but mine has a bluish tint when brightness is set to low levels.
the vibrant actually has MORE lag than the droid x, especially when opening and closing apps. it's not something you notice on all apps, but sometimes it's ridiculous, especially considering the 'horsepower' of the vibrant. as far as games go, i really don't notice the difference between the two, other than the fact that the vibrant is much more colorful.
yes, the vibrant looks a lot like my iphone 2g. whether that's bad or good is up to you.
the droid x feels MUCH more solidly built and my vibrant already has a minor 'squeak' or two....nothing major though.
for myself, the droid x screen is a bit more visible in direct sunlight.
MOST importantly, verizon has MUCH better coverage where i live now. i spent the weekend out of the city and my vibrant had ZERO signal....makes the choice between the two easier

That's really a nice advise for me. I do love Droid X so so much. Droid X was so cool when i just saw him at the first time. To be honest i dont love the appearance of i9000. So i think i've had the decision.
i don't think you can go wrong with either choice though it looks like you've settled on the droid x. i hope you enjoy it
I think the boot loader/eFuse issue will become more apparent when we get to gingerbread and beyond. Who knows how long or how speedily Moto will support the X. at least with the Galaxy S's you'll have other options.
Regarding the faster app startup on the X, I think it has faster access memory. At lest it send that way.

No it doesn't..the Vibrant as is has a bug in the I/O and the RFS system..the community already made a workaround to get it working properly...it gets 2200+ quadrant scores as well with the fix running 2.1 lol
Either way the lag is fixed once you do that I/O fix...my guess is samsung will release an official fix for the I/O as well...
How does TouchWiz 3.0 compare to nijablur?
I would think Froyo 2.2 should see a larger improvement on the Galaxy S compared to Droid X going from 2.1 to 2.2.

You gotta judge that for yourself..personally I like Touchwiz 3.0 better then sense and motoblur....but thats my personal opinion...some people hate on Touchwiz 3.0 because they don't realize its completely different then the previous Touchwiz...best way is to try it yourself since everyone has their preferences. Most of the hate so far for Touchwiz 3.0 was the "iphonish" look rather then anything else lol
As for improvement, I hope so..with the I/O fix the I9000 gets a 2200+ Quadrant score running 2.1...now Imagine running froyo?!?!? If it hits 5000 I'd wet my pants lol

Its been coming out from multiple sources that this is only because a partitioning tweak being done for the most part. Not saying it isn't a nice phone but comeon. You get one benchmark and all of a sudden its pants wetting time? The Droid X and the Samsung are pretty much right next to each other in real performance.

The Droid X is a nice phone yes..BUT the specs on the Galaxy S is a lot higher.
1ghz OMAP(Droid X) < 1ghz Hummingbird(Galaxy S)
SGX530(Droid X) < SGX540(Galaxy S)
SGX530 (13 MPolys/s, 500Mpx/[email protected]) for the handheld mobile market
SGX535 (28 MPolys/s, 500Mpx/[email protected]) - http://www.imgtec.com/partners/NEC.asp http://www2.renesas.com/news/en/archive/0710/0201.html (Intel calls it the GMA 500)
SGX540 (90 MPolys/s, 1Gpx/[email protected], Max Memory Band (GB/s) 4.2GB/s) for handheld high end mobile, portable, MID, UMPC, consumer, and automotive devices
Even the iPhone 4 has a SGX535 which is 2x better gpu then whats in a Droid X...the GPU in the Galaxy S though is sick..it pretty much is better then a PS2 ...

Gingerbread is gonna come out this fall...but performance wise the Galaxy S is actually pretty good...The Galaxy S is pretty much 3x more powerful then an EVO...so I can easily see it lasting at least a year...if anything will bottleneck this phone for future is the 512mb ram...or if dual cores are implemented will enable better multithreading..but these features will take time to implement...
This is why the Galaxy S is pretty much the best it can get in the specs given and should last at least a year.

Fascinate or Droid X

Cant decide which one to get. vote and Post why you chose the one you chose.
the only reason why i am leaning towards the fascinate is no locked boot loader and fast GPU for games and it seems more smooth and snappy. but i dunno if those are real issues....
on this forum, it looks like the droid X is only slightly more popular.
http://www.droid-life.com/2010/09/07/samsung-fascinate-review/
my bigest concern is that no 2.2 means no official flash support. and since it recieved an maintanance update recently its not coming for a bit (otherwise they'd role it all into one). that and i hate bing. following birdman's tweets... there seems to be a lot of odd things with the root folder structure as well.
its all personal preferance, i look at the fascinate more as a toy.

im kinda out of the loop right now. whats the story with the droid x and 2.2? that is somewhat of a big deal.
IMO, all the X has over the Fascinate is:
a lot heavier (5.47oz vs 4.1oz),
slightly larger (127x66x10.2mm vs 125x64x10.5mm),
bigger screen (4.3" vs 4.0"),
bigger camera lens (8mp vs 5mp).
*better reception*
And, oh yeah, Froyo!
Latest word from Samsung, Fascinate will have Froyo "by the end of the year." I prefer a 4" SAmoled to 4.3" LCD and I've read the Samsung takes better pictures even with the smaller lens, So I'm leaning Fascinate as well. But NOT impressed with Samsung's support.
I have a vibrant running a leaked TMo froyo, and I've played with the DX, everyone is different but I much prefer the Galaxy. Screen, feel, non-blur, really good developers, super easy to root/customize and the phone has some millions... lots of support.
I just went through 3 replacements in 7 days. I like the hackabliity of the Fascinate and the screen is gorgeous but its too thin and between TouchWiz being stock and Samsung still not having Froyo out on the eve of Gingerbread I'm not impressed. I have a Droid X on the way and couldn't be happier. Motorola has the best reception and data speed IMO. As long as I have root and WiFi Tether I'm fine. Someone will crack the bootloader eventually. The devs here are amazing.
I should add "Better reception" to my above post, that is a significant plus for the Droid X. Thanks for that, Jeffnucci. However, if you think the Fascinate is too thin you are going to be disappointed to learn the Droid X is actually thinner. Thinner and heavier may mean more fragile due to increased momentum from a 3' fall.
I think the bootloader on the Droid X is like 2.2 on the Fascinate - just don't have it yet but won't be a significant difference in several months. When they are running the same software, it's just the differences in hardware that will matter.

The X is heavier though is it not? Thin and light gives me the feeling of cheapness in my hands. The X feels like it has a nice heft to it.
I played with the fascinate a bit and did not really like the feel of it. I like the fact that the DX is made of metal and has a larger screen. IMO AMOLED screens suck in bright sunlight. Almost unusable in my experience. I have owned samsung phones in the past and my experience with samsung support is sub par. Combine the DX with the Fission Rom and that equals awesomeness...lol

Fission is a vanilla android experience. It's blazing fast and doesn't have blur crap. It's a brand new phone I'm holding in my hands.
Yes it is really fast. They have worked out most if not all of the bugs and will have an official release on monday. The speed, amount of ram, and battery consumption are just a few reason to use it.

Agreed. I just got my X and it is the best phone I've had yet. I've owned an iPhone 4, a BlackBerry Torch, a Fascinate, a Droid, etc. This is fast, it feels good in my hands, it looks nice, I love it.
I had an incredible (rooted). Sweat got behind the screen so my local verizon store gave me the option of another inc or the facinate. I took the facinate. Voice quality sucks, signal sucks but the screen is unbelievable. Due to reception issues I can swap for an X but after comparing screens I just can't pull the trigger. The X's screen colors seem very washed... Is this normal or is there a fix?

The X isn't washed out, the Fascinate is just massively oversaturated. Just the nature of OLED displays. A day of not using one and you'll realize the X in fact has a very lovely screen. And technically very close to color correct.

Our phone

I don't think our phones screen is that small. Actually its quite large. Just as big as the Droid x's screen that I had before this phone. 4" is the perfect size for large and comfortable. Especially its super AMOLED display, Is drop dead Gorgeous. The only thing I don't like is how when you look closer to the screen, you can see pixels. But its not noticeable unless your looking very close.
Before this phone, I had a Droid X (which Verizon replaced with this phone) which was huge, but I love huge screens and this is the only phone I would take (they offered me a incredible 2, original incredible and a Droid 2 R2-D2).
Overclocking capabilities -
Back when I had the DROID X, overclocking sucked. Especially when I spoke to Verizon and they said the processor for the Droid x was designed to run at 720MHz but Motorola maxed it out to 1GHz. You could run 1.3GHz MAX Unstable.

Fascinate wins. Its thin and sexy. I remember being angry because the top of the Droid x curved out.
I had a epic and compared my Droid x (when I had my Droid x) side by side. Both on the lowest brightness, the epic won. Big time. Droid x looked washed out, greyish, and lagged when having live wallpapers. Standard Quadrant test looked f***ed up, on the planets test and the 3D hall. I love my fassy. My fassy didn't do anything my Droid x issues had. The Droid X and iPhone can't really do the stuff that this phone can do.
And people that think this phone is buggy and crap- IT ISNT! It still, still has the fastest PowerVR sgx540 GPU Now days. And can be overclocked to 1.5GHz+.
I do though, want the 3 faced back that the incredible 2 has. But for the fascinate, does anyone know if theirs one made?

I didn't know that till after I got the dx. Then I was a little mad. That's why the overclocking abilities on the Droid x are so bad.

Ya, I was going to get the Droid x but just went with the fassy because the screen was gorgeous, then regretted it bit because thought the Droid x was just more powerful ( because of how it was built) then felt satisfied because of how easy it was to root and flash custom roms ( despite how hard to dev one) . Thanks to all the devs by the way

Atrix > Photon?

I switched from Moto Photon 4G on Sprint to Atrix 4G on Straight Talk. Even though the hardware is 99% the same, Atrix feels noticeably smoother. On the Photon I used the Rocko Rom and CM9 alphas.
I think the atrix has more ram. I may be mistaken

I like the 1930mah battery of the atrix

Both have 1GB of ram.
The Photon has a full RGB screen, so it actually looks a bit better compared to our Pentile. But in pretty much everything else the Atrix wins, albeit by a small margin since they're essentially the same phones.
Am i wrong or isnt the big difference not in the amount of the ram in the two but the speed of the ram. If i remember right (someone is welcome to do the searching to correct me if i am wrong lol) the atrix has actuall desktop RAM. I want to say DDR2. and the photon does not?

1880mAh look on the battery itself.

AT&T Version has 1930mAh I checked it myself, is the best battery, I can get like two days using the phone with (CM9 Joker)

Mine too. Great life using Juice Defender.
I'm gonna disagree that the Photon screen is better than the Atrix.
The first time I saw the Photon,I immediately notice a faint array of dots over the screen,I presume they are from the digitizer, but they are really annoying and distracting!
I love the pixel density of the Atrix and finger print scanner!
The only "advantage" of the Photon over the Atrix is the out of the box landscape hdmi mirror capability. But that is now possible on the Atrix through a simple hack.
Cheers!

The Photon has a pentile screen as well. See anandtech's review.
Photon has a bigger but lower PPI display (4.3" vs 4") and a higher resolution camera (8mp vs 5mp) as well as the obvious CDMA support.
Otherwise, they're the exact same phone. Case in point, some Blur roms for one device can be flashed on the other (with a few things borked, but it boots) and current CM9 roms have developers using a common code base for both devices. If the Atrix feels faster, its either because Motorola has some tweak in blur between the two devices or a placebo effect.
