Grrr... do not know what to, came with box and everthing so I did not expect it to have a bad ESN. Is it worth paying someone to flash to Cricket then Re-Craigslist it for Cricket only. I rooted my exsisting Eris but have no way to test if settings I make for DIC to Cricket will work.
Any ideas or opinions? Besides flames for being an idiot.

That's why it's always good to meet right at VZW and have them check the ESN right on the spot....the dude probably stole it and sold it. He may also have called you from a payphone...Good luck getting a hold of him.
If it really is lost or stolen, I bet the actual owner would like to have it back. Won't VZW help with this? Any identifying data on the phone?

the police should be able to help you, as it is illegal to sell stolen goods. or wait six months for verizon to take it off the blacklist.
Find out who owns it and give it back, that would be the right thing to do. You can't use it anyway. Try to work something out with the owner.

Once a ESN is blacklisted I though even VZW couldnt remove it? So even if they got the phone back it would be useless
My assumption is the phone was reported lost then replaced, found then sold.

for what it is worth, I was a VZW store manager for years until just a few weeks ago when I left for a new job.
they can track the ESN back to whoever owned it, they will be able to contact that person for you, and tell them that a person has thier phone and they can contact you if they wish, and they will give that person your number. they will not give you the person's number(legal reasons obviously).
OR
a more likely situation, the guy who sold it to you used what is called a lost, stolen, damaged upgrade. many store managers use it to get a customer a device they want(like the wanted a droidX). this automatically puts thier old device on the LSD list. if it is on there you can really be VERY nice and butter up the store manager and don't be a douche and yell at them...and they can call into CS and have it taken off the list sometimes.
anyways, good luck, sorry you got screwed.

Guess I was wrong lol
The thing is that the guy already paid for it, so it just sucks...I would suggest:
-File a police report
-Try to get a hold of the guy and meet with him (or with police, so he tells truth)
-Make him refund the money and then try to give it back to the person or VZW (I am sure the original owner has a different phone now)
It is tough but just sad.
So my friend found someone's lost Droid 2 and wanted me to fix it for him. He wants it so he can take it to Verizon as if he had bought it and have it activated. It's locked, as in no service. He already did a factory reset.
Where do I look now? What exactly do I look for? I can figure out how to root it easy enough but after that I'm lost on what to do..

Return to Verizon. The person who lost it probably reported it by now and Verizon blacklisted the ESN number or whatever. It's no good.
It's Christmas time dude, someone is probably really upset that they lost that phone. Do the noble thing and return it.
I am sure the person that lost the phone has all the family photos, family and friends numbers on it. Too bad that your friend didn't look up the number and try to return the phone..
Please put yourself in that person shoes. ...God Bless you(for helping your friend doing the evil thing) and most of all for your friend for not returning the phone to the owner.
Also just to add a personal experience:
I found a phone on the ground at a concert once, called the last number dialed in it and found out who it belonged to. Turned out to belong to the guitarist for the headlining band. Me and my gf got brought backstage, had an amazing party and got a ton of free ****.
However, if you do decide not to return it, I'm sure a few devs out there would love to get in touch with you to get the phone from you, namely people like blackdroid and cvpcs, who are currently working on D2 ROMs but don't have a device to test builds on. To those guys it doesn't matter as much if the phone is blacklisted, as it can still be used for development.
However, you should make an effort to return it to it's original owner, as there is no way you will be able to use the phone for service through verizon at this point.

That's awesome dude!
He found it weeks ago and just now.got it to me. He long since formatted it so all info was lost. I don't think he will be trying to return it.
Is there anything that can be done software wise? Or would the hardware unique to the phone make this impossible?

It's useless as a phone on Verizon. They block the ESN of the phone once it's reported lost/stolen and won't allow it on the network regardless of what you do to the software. You need better friends. Just because you find something doesn't make it yours. Especially when it's something like a phone that contains the owners contact info in it.
Yeah. Well thanks for the help.

I agree w/ others on here that it would still be. Est to try to return it or to donate to a rom dev...
But how about bypassing the reg when you boot the phone and setting it up for making calls on wifi via skype or google voice? Should still be useful as a tablet computer, if anything.

I think the right thing to do is to return it to a Verizon store and let them find the owner for you (they can look up the ESN and see the history of it and find the person that way).
But if you plan to keep it, you might wait until folks have successfully unlocked the SIM card and use it on a different network. Chances are Verizon can't blacklist the phone for AT&T or T-Mobile purposes.
You could either return it to verizon, give it to a dev for testing purposes, or sell it as blacklisted for parts on Ebay.
I'd go with option number 2 actually. it might end up helping you out in the long run if you have a D2 yourself.
I work at verizon I can look up the esn if you want
Just bring it to a verizon and say you found it. This is a very expensive phone and is most likely blacklisted. My aunt turned in a lost phone to a verizon store and got a credit from the manager. Your decency may pay off.
tell your friend to be nice and return it to verizon.

Really???? I have to ask, do you have a Droid 2 for Verizon? Have you seen a sim card?
Just an FYI, Droid 2 uses CDMA and T-Mobile and at&t use gsm. Two totally different frequencies, and the Droid 2 will never work with either of them.

cool your jets broski, he just confused it for a droid 2 global which, in fact, DOES have a sim card slot.
Technically the droid 2 has a sim card slot aswell it's just blocked by a piece of plastic glued to the top of the battery contacts and there aren't actual sim/GSM hardware but there is a slot for it.

Hey guys im a newb and was wondering if i can flash my bad esn x play to metro pcs? I cant afford Verizon anymore so they gave me a bad esn and metro has the 40$ unlimited everything
So if you guys can help me out this is much appreciated i love this phone and don't want to give it away yet.
Just get your sim unlocked and change the APN settings
Edit: unsure if a bad esn can be fixed by unlocking.. You'll have to ask someone who deals with sim unlocks

The only reason your phone will have a bad ESN is if either it's stolen or you haven't paid your bill, either way the phone is not yours. Thats why your carrier has blacklisted the ESN. Basically you are asking people to help you steal the phone.
you would have to change ESN which is... well, quite impossible...

The problem is you said in your post twice, they gave you a bad ESN. Well what did you mean by that, because the only reason they would do that is if you owe them money. Or were you just mistaken? If you go elsewhere with a "bad" or blocked ESN its not going to work.

Doesn't mean he stole it. Could have been locked into a bad contract
Some people like myself buy them off ebay with bad esn
What happens is all these reneged accounts are lying around eligible for upgrades
some one will come in and get all the brand new phones unopened and sell them online for big profit.
It's 100% your property if you buy it from a 3rd party.
The bad ESN part is bad because then all the towers will block your phone
so you cant use 40$ pre-pay service because they are leasing the towers from big company like verizon and such

Ugh. Ugh. Ugh. READ people. SIM card on CDMA? Why list the reason when he told you the reason out-right (can't afford it; obviously under contract)? Exactly "can't afford verizon" that means he didnt pay the bill, so the phone was cut off, he does not own the phone because he invalidated his contract, and thus the phone is stolen.

I don't know how things are done there, but actually that's technically and legally wrong here in the USA. The phone is rebated and paid for at the time the contract is signed. The SERVICE CONTRACT is the only remaining obligation. The contract comes with terms and stipulations stating that they will require payment of an ETF (Early Termination Fee) if he does not carry the contract to full term and that they will ban the ESN if he does not pay that. It does not state that the phone remains or reverts to being their property.
For consumer protections reasons, there are other "outs" in the contract and you are not required to send the phone back because it is YOURS nor are you required to pay ETFs. For example, the FCC does not want local monopolies to keep you living in an area they serve just because you have a contract with a provider there that doesn't exist elsewhere. For example, if I wanted to move to North Dakota and there was no Sprint coverage in the town I was moving to, I can move there and keep my phone and end my contract and legally dodge the ETF. If I ever activate it with that provider again, they can require me to resume my contract.
Simple.

Flipping through the thread and damn some people are f ing unbelievable. Your really going to call the guys phone stolen because he couldnt pay the bill? Are you kidding me? Pretty sure the 250 dollar early termination fee that will be tacked on to a final bill will pretty much cover the cost of the phone.. Its amazing how people can be so argumentative for no reason. The guy had a simple question, he didnt ask for a moral judgement. The answer to your question is YES you can have it flashed to metro.

Why did you even waste energy and burn a single calorie to type on this thread if you weren't going to contribute to the question asked. I'm sick of arse holes that want to play phone police on an internet forum. You don't know if he paid his termination fee or made conditions with Verizon. Personally I think its none of your business or any body else. So the point of the matter is Metro hooks up a lot of phones from other carriers such as Verizon legally in the US. Trust me America being the forefront of lawsuits would have sued the breaks off of Metro PCS if it wasn't. Do not post if you don't have anything intelectual or contributing please.
R800x Carrier Pigeon - Got any change?
Before I get into the nitty gritty, yes, ive seached the forum. yes ive seached the google. yes, afaik im using the right software (cdma-w, qpst, QXDM, even that dfs cdma tool).
The Xperia Play (R800x - Verizon) is an amazing phone first of all. If only it could make calls...
Here is the problem im having: I can write min, nam, PRL, etc, most NV items to the phone just fine. but when i try to repair the esn/meid i get back an error which, though slightly different depending on the software, amounts to a statement that the value is read-only or failed to write. I have some past success with this sort of thing on other platforms (Moto Razr for ex.)but im at a loss here, and ready to accept any help offered. I read somewhere that an unlocked BL is req. but that doesnt make sense to me.
Also ive noticed that the older version of cdmaw (2.7) doesn't seem to read or write meid values, only esn, from what ive read, its like frank sinatra said, you cant have one without the other.
So my questions: has anyone else run into this problem? Is it related to the bootloader or ROM in any way? Suggestions etc Please and Thank you
Yes im a n00b. yes im ok with that. there is always some1 who knows more about something than I do. Teach me to fish so i can share my fish

Couple things:
1. "hacker speak" like saying 3$n and m31D is tremendously annoying. I have no idea why you felt the need to do that. Actual intelligent humans like you will find here think you sound like an idiot when you type like that. Speak English, its what we speak.
2. I don't believe anyone has successfully done with this phone what you're trying to do AFAIK. There are people who can unlock the bootloader for you, but I agree I doubt that would help, but hey who knows.
3. That said, you threw gas on the fire even mentioning legal issues. I'm not gonna make any assumptions about why you have a bad ESN phone a I don't know where you got it, but as you can see its a touchy subject here. Mainly because carriers don't just blacklist ESNs for no reason or on a whim.
Anyway whatever your reasons, good luck, I don't know that you will find an answer here, but maybe someone who does know can help you.
Touchy subject
My Esn is clear, but i already have service with another cdma provider- one who has very limited choices as far as phones go. I have no intention of trying to rip off my carrier for my data use or anything like that, i just want to make calls on my current network, using my R800x.
I wrote 3$n because some places will delete your post or even ban you just for mentioning the word, which is silly since all we're trying to do is exchange some theoretical knowledge.
Anyway thanks for your response RogueLeader.

So your carrier just plain won't accept your Xperia Play's ESN, so you're trying to swap on one from another phone? Good plan, but like I said it seems like something thats not likely possible (or hey maybe it is and just no one's done it yet). I'd be interested to hear if this works out. Also pretty ridiculous if its true that they just won't take it, but then again Verizon won't accept non Verizon cdma phones as far as I know, but we expect them to suck.
As for this place its pretty heavily monitored, so if your post goes somewhere they don't want, it doesn't matter what words you use they will delete it for you ..

Bad esn for whatever reason, it's still a bad esn. Metro does have the power and tools to flash SOME phones to their network. BUT a lot of these phones will not be fully functional, whether it's the internet or mms, etc. but here's the thing, we here are not metro pcs, we are consumers, ask metro, if they don't have an answer we will more than likely not have one either.
you will just piss some people off with your poor search and investigative skills.

It all depends on how you bought it. If you paid cash, you might be out of luck. If you used a credit or debit card, then perhaps your provider offers some kind of refund policy. If it was PayPal, then you can likely get the refund.

Ok.. Heres the story... Transaction took place on Craigslist..
So I had a blue color galaxy S3 and didnt like the color, traded it for a new nexus 4.. Nexus 4 was fine, and I was really wanting a titanium S3.. Found the S3 and bought it.. Sold the nexus 4 to a guy for 310.. The nexus 4 was working great until yesterday.. Guy calls me up thinking i sold him a stolen phone.. As far as I knew it was a good phone, i check the imei and it says its been reported stolen, so i offer to give the guy back his money.. Now im stuck with a blacklisted N4.. Need help. Anywhere I can go to revive the phone? Or anywhere I can sell it to? What are my options? Is it possible to flash a ROM or do something when rooted to change the Imei..? At least make it useable because the guy i originally traded with decided to change his number and now im out $310.. whats the best thing to do? I cant go to the cops, they will tell me im associated with the theft, asked tmobile they want to fill out a bull**** report..
is there a way to flash a Rom or something to maybe hide the Imei or something? Use a different carrier? unlock it even though its unlocked?
Or should i get my mini screw drivers and start to disassemble it to sell for parts? Man i feel ****ty doing this.. I mean im so against stolen things and i just hate to deal with it ugh

You can buy stuff off of CL, but you have to be smart. I've bought dozens of phones off CL (and sold) and was only burned once. I bought an Atrix 4G with a wonky touch screen. Actually, I bought an EVO 4G with a wonky touch screen too but that was just my fault, I showed up to meet the guy a little intoxicated lol. Anyway, when I bought my Nexus 4 (new) I had the guy bring the receipt from Google Play and give it to me. I also asked a lot of questions....

At least you have good karma for giving the guy his money back....
If it doesn't work u replace the screen and u should have a working phone too.

Those are both rather silly remarks.
You're a victim, why would the police be anything but sympathetic to you? And it's not a bs report, it's a report detailing the crime. Maybe they can track the original scammer down with that report. Maybe your insurance co will reimburse you with that report. Don't lose whatever small chance you have by being too lazy to fill out some paperwork.

You sure the dude just didn't "buy" the nexus 4 and then give you back a non working Nexus 4 and you give him his money back. Did the nexus you get back match up with the one you gave to him. Like serials and stuff

If this helps... I'm from Belgium and I bought my phone off someone from England.
Got a pretty good deal too (as it was new)
The catch was that it was blacklisted too...he sent me the reportcard and apparantly that stated that it was only blocked by 2 providers. None of which I am using.
So maybe switching providers could work OR since Belgium has no (or nearly no) providers linked to the phones as they don't come in deals the phone just works, blacklisted or not. So try selling it abroad and buy buy yourself a new one.
I doubt that you can unblock it.
Is it blacklisted by T-mobile or Google? If it is blacklisted by T-mobile it should work on AT&T and it will definitely work overseas.

No it won't as all the major US carriers started reporting to a national blacklist database as of October of 2012.

The database is launched, but the carriers are not sharing IMEI's yet. Bad ESN Verizon phones work on other carriers and blocked T-mobile or AT&T phones will still work on the others network. The thing is, not only does the IMEI have to be entered into the database, but the carrier manually has to apply that to their own database to effectively block it from their network.
And, a blacklisted phone will most definitely work overseas.

do the report... you may be able to have the phone you traded blacklisted after all the person you dealt with is the one that has committed a crime not you

So let me tell you how this went down...
First, I go to a local Best Buy Mobile store to check out the Moto G for my girlfriend. They tell me they can't sell me one in the store until Jan. 9th, but if I purchase one online and choose to pickup in the store, I could get one. So I stand in the store, buy the phone on my GS4, and pick it up at the counter. Weird process, but whatever.
So I bought the phone. The lady at the register assured me that I would be able to use this on her line (which is a contract line). Go to activate it, and find out that it can't be done until the 9th. That's cool, no problem. Once I get home, I find out that the phone will only work on a prepaid line and BestBuy did not inform me of this. I go back up to the store to return it, but they won't take it back because it's opened. Oh, I forgot to mention, the lady at the damn counter was the one who opened it!
So, is there ANY way that I could get this to activate on a contract line without having it activated on a prepaid line for 6 months, or am I screwed? If not, is there a good way to bypass the activation and use it solely as a wifi "tablet" (for my girlfriend's kid)?
If I actually am screwed, anyone want this thing for $80 shipped in the continental US?
That's a lie about it being opened. I have returned prepaid phone there on several occasions. There is something either shady about your story or the person working but something isn't adding up here.

Yeah, I thought something was fishy about that too. I'm going to try and take it back when someone else is working.

You can bypass the activation easily, simply hit next 1 time, pull down the notification center, click on the multitasking button and swipe away the activation screen quickly, and boom! You have a $100 iPod touch alternative (which is why I bought it) I recorded a short video to show you, wiped it real quick because I just got it yesterday anyways

Why? CDMA phones have never used SIM slots. It's only with LTE now that Verizon and Sprint have used SIMs in their phones

uhm it was my impression that with bestbuy you can return prepaid phones opened within 14 days, the part you left out of your story is how long you waited to return the phone!

The Verizon phone has only been available for 3 days. He's no way near the 14 day limit. Love the attitude.

Cool story, brah. Nonetheless, I guess you missed the fact that he bought this for his girlfriend who is under contract with Verizon which is a CDMA carrier. You can't buy a GSM phone and use it on a CDMA carrier. The only time one would need a SIM card slot is if you're using it on Sprint or Verizon's LTE network and since this phone doesn't have LTE....
Thanks for the responses guys! I'll try the unlock method later tonight when I have the phone in hand again (girlfriend still has it at the moment).
As for the return policy, I agree with y'all. I probably should be able to take it back, but the lady at the counter seemed like she might have been new or something. I actually tried to take it back about 4 hours later, so way within the 14 day window mentioned earlier.
On a side note, I won't be using the phone either way as I just went ahead and bought a like-new GS3 from a friend that she is going to use (wish I would have known he was selling it PRIOR to all this). If I can use it as a tablet, I'll just let her kid have it, but if not, I'll try and take it back again.
Will keep everyone posted!
keep us posted guy, I might take you up on that offer.
Good luck.

Can you use this phone with other CDMA carrier?
So I can buy one at best buy at 99 usd and use or not? No need anything like an active line or anything else?

Correct. After being told they didn't have any at my local store I was happy to inform them that they had 8 of them in stock which was very easy to find out online, and a little arguing about whether or not they could sell it yet, as well as a call to their Verizon rep, I finally was able to procure a Moto G without activating it. Hoping to find out this will work immediately with PagePlus.
Good news everyone, I was able to bypass the activation screen and unlock the phone for "tablet" use (using the methods mentioned in this thread). After playing with the phone for a little while, I gotta say, I actually like the thing! While we won't be using this as a phone, I will probably keep it to use as a MP3 player for the house.
I played around with the features a little and the only real disappointment that I saw was the camera. Maybe I'm use to the 13MP on the GS4, but the picture quality just didn't seem very good. Better than my girlfriend's old iPhone 4, but lacking nonetheless.

Let me know how that works out. I tried and the pageplus rep said that the phone was unable to work, and it needed to be 'unlocked.' I wonder if I just got someone who didn't know what to do.
I returned my Verizon prepaid moto g today to BB. I did not have any issues. They did check to see if it had been activated. They turned the phone on and seeing the activate wizard appear turned it off. They only thing I didn't get back was the $0.70 for a 911 fee.
