Android Apps for the Vogue Port

It was suggested that we start a thread specifically for the apps that run well on the Android port to the HTC Touch/Vogue. I personally own an (Sprint=CDMA) HTC Touch Diamond, but upon seeing the maturity level of Android running on the Touch, I immediately went to eBay and picked up the Touch handset...and I am glad I did. The only reason I boot back to winmo is for work calendar (Lotus), Skype (iSkoot kinda sucks), and Podcasts (hopefully we getting DoggCatcher soon).I've found that battery life with Togga on to be about 8-10 hours which I can live with it, but it's a pain to keep toggling if you really need to conserve (but it could be worse )I plan on posting more battery data soon, but need a few more days of collection. Hopefully we can find a more permanent way of managing the data connection with balance for battery life.

The apps I have found to run well on my CDMA with dzo/f00bar's (much respect) latest files:
-Scoreboard - I'm not that big of a sports fan, but this app is slick!
-aLastFM - Just got permission to post the link from the developer. Thanks Oleg!!
-Stocker - Simple but effective stock app, but no graphs. If someone could find a better one...
-Weather - Simple, but effective. Multiple Cities, current and forecast, with menu link to detailed outlook including radar from Undergroud Weather.
-AnyCut -Great for making shortcuts to just about any screen in the OS, especially useful for Battery and Sounds&Display
-TextEasy - for sending a text to multiple contacts, until someone can get a hold of ChomperSMS or K9SMS (K9Mail I have not gotten to work either, we need a better mail app, the native client doesn't even recognize URLS, wtf?!)
-OIFileManager - It's the only one I've tried, so can't comment on the others, but there are several out there. UPDATE: I tried out Astro and Glance. I liked Astro, but after a day it stopped working for me and gives me a force quit. I prefer Glance over OI FileManager, it's on 4shared I believe.
-OIFlashlight - amazing how handy this comes in
-OINewsReader - No frills RSS aggregator
-ShopSavvy - Did you say "We'll match any price"?...but be fast with your fingers, camera is not fine enough to capture the barcode
UPDATE:
I wanted to add SMS PopUp as another great app. You can find it along with a bunch of other APKs here. One of the G1 owners that grabbed all of the apps and is hosting them for download.

The Meebo app is well worth a look - look for it on 4shared.com. Lets you IM on just about any IM network (Yahoo, MSN, AIM etc). IMs appear in the notification bar while you are in any other program. Great stuff.

I believe im the only person hosting the meebo.apk at the moment.

i installed and signed into my MSN account, however, just a white screen shows up. No list of contacts, etc. No menu options other than to add another account or sign off. Not exactly useful (at least this version). Is anyone using this successfully?
EDIT: I received a chat, and that gave me a buddy online, maybe no one on my list was signed on at the time I first checked.
Also, it doesnt remember your username and password, which is annoying because it randomly closed on me after tapping the notification in the bar during a chat session today. I'll keep looking for a better app or updated version.

What about an updated version of Shopsavvy. Mine keeps saying there is a new version, but of course we can't update off the marketplace.

I'm looking for the Locale application. Even though we don't have GPS running, Locale still alows profile switching based on time and days of the week, which would be useful for office vs. non-office settings. If someone could post this I would appreciate it!

If they are in the AndroidApps folder then they should be installed already. I found that sometimes icons don't show up to launch the program, however. This is where AnyCut comes in handy. Use AnyCut to search in "Activities" to find your app. If you are not seeing it in this list then you may have to "manually" install the app. Open a file browser such as OI File Manager or Glance and navigate to your AndroidApps folder. Click on the .apk file and it should launch teh app installer.

I am very interested in the Scoreboard app, I got it running fine, but the other day the game I added to my favorite never really gave me updates until the game was over by a few hours.
Isnt this application able to provide real-time results?

Someone in the main topic said something about an ebay app. What is it and is it any good? Is it secure? It'd be nice to have for me.
There's been a couple apps I liked that didn't fit our screen plus having to reinstall android files often I lose all my saved info so it doesn't work out for me. Sprint needs to hurry up with an HTC Android phone.

Maybe a stupid question, not sure... Why can't someone extract the android market application from the G1 to be used on other phones? Seems a bit odd of Google to limit the market to only a specific phone.

There is a discussion about the marketplace on the big long forum. The marketplace is not open source. They're talking about the commands and encryption and such for it. I'd think it's not open because they plan on having pay for apps but I could be wrong

Allows you to place calls and check voicemail for your GrandCentral account. Pretty much allows for unlimited free calling. Works great on my friends G1.
Still missing a few features.. like the ability to call contacts that are only in your GC account, but still very good.
Heres the problem.. it crashes when trying to dial out on the Vogue!!! Ahhh!
So close to beating the telecoms... If anyone knows anything about error codes or how to get this working, I might have a GrandCentral account invite...

I noticed this also. i resolved by changing my time zone in settings. Only problem is that this then modifies your "synced" time with your carrier, it adjusts + or - according to your time zone, so you have to comensate...each time you boot. Not by any means an elegant solution, but if you need realtime scores this is the answer. Probably better off sticking with NHL.com

I tried the "Ebay.apk" from 4Shared, but it doesn't display properly. The tabs extend all the way to the bottom of the other screen which is a common problem for us vogue port users.

T-Mobile Device Tune-up Beta

Hey guys, T-Mobile is implementing a new program with their My Device program for Android devices called Device Tune-up, in beta form. From reading everything, I guess it's essentially another task-killer. I'm going to give it a shot. Anybody else willing to try?

T-Mobile is continually looking for ways to bring new innovation to our customers. Within the My Account application, we are adding new functionality in the My Device section called Device Tune-up. Device Tune-up is built to run in the background at all times and ‘tune-up’ the device by closing unused services that are running.
Device Tune-up is different from most task killers because it does not require you to do anything. Device Tune-up will default to 'on'. While on, Device Tune-up proactively closes services to help the device and battery perform at their best. Most pre-loaded applications will not be affected by Device Tune-up. For our non-technical users, this may mean you never even realize Device Tune-up is running; your device may simply run better.

I downloaded this, but it does not allow you to turn off pre-installed apps. That's a major loss and pretty much renders the thing useless. Advanced Task Killer works much better in this department.

I'm going to give it a shot and see if it works okay. I don't use a lot of the apps that are req to stay on and not kill so it may work great for me. I'll see in a day or two.

That's weird I installed it but I don't see the device tune up part anywhere and I'm not on wifi. Also I read this on the download page:
If, after installing the beta, you do not see Device Tune-up on the Quick Tools menu, it means that your device was placed into a control group experience. To opt out of the control group experience and be able to see Device Tune-up, long click on the Phone Info line under Quick Tools tab and choose to ‘opt-out’ of the control group. You will then see Device Tune-up.
I followed the instructions and I long press on the phone info part under quick tools and nothing happens or I don't get any option to opt-out. Anyone else having this issue? Does this app work on nexus one running froyo?

try installing apk manager from the market then install it from there thats what i had to do to get mine to work

What do you mean? I installed apk manager and all it does is show me all my apps installed. And I do see the myaccount app in installed but there's nothing else to do....did I miss a step?...... Thanks

I got it and installed it through the apk manager as you stated and installed the app but it still doesn't show device tune up or holding long pressing the phone info doesn't give me the option to opt-out....

after you install it open up my device go to quick tools and press and hold on phone info then you get a pop up asking about the control group thing

Yeah I've tried this like 100 times today, nothing happens I hold "phone info" it highlights green I hold it nothings pop ups asking me to opt out. I've installed and reinstalled the app through the apk manager and without it and it just isn't working. I have nexus one running froyo (latest update) am I missing something????

This app is so completely pointless. Except for the percentage meter, which I am testing to see if I get battery battery life with no percentage widget running. I don't like the 1-10 scale the settings menu has.
This is basically how it works for me. Since I know how to end programs using the back button method , I go to my "My device beta", go to end tasks, and every task I would like to kill says "cannot kill pre-installed app".
Facebook, twitter, all sorts of dumb S*** has to be left running. Personally I hate the mail app because it lags and the gmail app is better, so I would like to close mail along with FB and many others. Would it be so terrible if T-mobile made these things optional.

I agree that this is useless. I have tried it for a few days now and it has done nothing. I still (out of habbit) go and click my task killer and it constantly is still killing apps that this beta is missing. I purposely opened some and let them run in the background for several hours unused and it still did not kill them and they were not stock apps so it should kill them just fine. Anyway, I still use my task killer to save battery so nothing has changed except I lost a few min of my life tinkering with this. Not worth the time.

I've gotten about 2 extra hours (from 10 to 12 hours) of battery life after installing this. There are plenty of articles explaining how advanced task killer is actually a battery drain, and is really only used by people with a microsoft windows mindset. TMOs app runs a bit differently and actually kills tasks that are running in the background, not just holding memory (I'm not going to explain the differnce, as its been done 100x already).
I give the app a good rating.

[Q] Weather settings

I am unable to switch off the setting to stop downloading data automatically although I have unticked the box.
I continues to update the weather every hour complete with graphics.
I would like to switch it off and only download when I need it
Any suggestions?

I have a french version, but I try to translate, the naming will probaly not exact:
1) go to parameter (settings) page.
2) tap on "DATA service" (service de données in French)
3) Here, you will find what you want, "weather" and then untick "auto download"

Are you sure that is the Weather the cause of update ?
Ther are a lot of other aplications e-mail, Stocks, GPS update, application update,....
By me all this things seems to work well. Elsewhere, there is an application that stops all the phone communication : nodata. I do not use it but I read this work very well on mini.

See if the program "NoData" doesn't help you. It allows you to black access to the internet via your phone system. Sure worked for me.

The Weather tab is a big resource hog. I also suspect some bugs in it that can cause your phone to freeze. (Not verified yet. But one of my prime suspects.)
I would suggest to disable the whole weather thing altogether.

Which resourses does the weather program hog? I magine that it's a load on the battery, and the graphic use up a lot of memory. Are there any others? I would never use my mobile provider to update anything in my phone. I do it when I sync or find a hotspot.
How would you disable it?
I am only curious, so when you have a moment, I'd be interested in your response.

Primary the ram memory. I notice it ate up several megabytes of ram. I forgot to jot down exactly how many. It certainly is not as small as 1Mb or 2Mb. Somewhere closer to 10Mb. It's huge.
Disable it from "Personalize Home Screen Tabs".
Basically, take it off the tabs. And don't update it. After a few days, it will just die off.

"Android OS" consuming insane amount of data in background

I have a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, on ver 6.0.1; Build No:MMB29K.G935FXXU1APD1
Notice couple week ago, I have finished my monthly data quota of 3Gb, upon checking data usage close to 1/3 is consumed by "Android OS" in background.
Since then, I been on quest to find out what actually caused the drain on data. I have tried
1. Run in safe mode, "Android OS" in background continue
2. Factory reset, "Android OS" in background continur.
3. "Reset Network Setting", work for a couple a day, then "Android OS" in background came back again.
4. Off all Google Account Sync and Off background data, "Android OS" in background continue too.
Now I am really out of ideas... really disappointed with Android now.... planning to sell off my phone and switch to Iphone

Just as a comparison, between 7am to 1pm today, "Android OS" already consumed 37Mb; while my web brwsing in the same period only used up 95mb. And I have Facebook app disabled already.

at a 'wag' I'd speculate that you have one/all of the background reporting enabled (diagnostics, security reports, app scanning, et. al.).
you could also take a walk through the 'optimize battery usage' settings to restrict the various apps to limit their usage.
these things are discussed in the battery consumption thread(s) but they also affect data usage.

I had the same issue the very first week I got the device (800+ MB consumed by Android OS) - it automagically stopped once I greenified and Dozed the sh!t out of it.
Mind you, even at the beginning I had no sync and most of apps disabled for background data usage.
Sh!ty implementation if you ask me: it almost looks like a collusion between Google and the carriers to waste your data. Why on Earth would they otherwise have "Download boost" and "Smart network switch" which both suck up your precious little data (I speak as a Canadian screwed by the monopolies...).

"duh" - they can bill you for more data consumption, makes complete sense to me!
I had the thought that it'd be very nice (from a user' point of view) of everything not absolutely necessary was disabled by default and a nice 'wizard' walked you through enabling of ANYTHING which will use background data, location, or radio (essentially anything using power or money). Sort of the mirroring the "secure by default" ethic where everything would need to be individually opted-in. Alas, I feel this is contrary to the interests not only of the phone carriers (who want to bill more for data service), OEM (who want to regularly sell you a new device), and Google (who wants to leverage data of/about/by you to create $).
Or maybe I'm just a little cynical.

how you greenify Doze? dont think it is available on Sammy phone.

I started to monitor the "Android OS" usage every 5~10min... what I notice is, it starts drain data every time I go online, e.g. surf net, FB app, etc.
So for example, surf net at 10:00am... and close the browser... 5 min later I will notice the "Andoird OS" data consumption increased by another 2-3Mb.

Ok, seems to have found a solution. I boot into recovery and
1. wipe cache
2. wipe data
now it is running ok. "Android OS" no longer draining data in background.
Not quite sure why the previous two time factory reset via setting menu wont do the tricks though.

I have the same trouble! Android SO consumes a lot of data, I'm gonna try your solution I hope it works!!

You may wanna check the wakelocks, probably most often used will be your evil one

AASAservice
Download the Package disabler in google play and disable the system app named AASAservice. You will be OK. I found this solution through a data manager app called DATAEYE. If you still worry about your data usage, you can try to use this app too.

Samsung is actually very open about it. They said that first and foremost, it is the carriers, that are their customers. Not the average Joe blow like us.

I think he's talking about BK package disabler Pro which is what I use too, great app.
However, cant remember now if this is possible in MM but in Android 7 Nougat you can restrict data usage for anything you like except apps that really need to use data like facebook and your browser etc, but you can still restrict them from using background data regardless, screenshots below, as far as I'm concerned, theres not really much on my phone that I want accessing my data without me knowing about it, I don't send picture messages etc, and I don't need weather and traffic updates every 10 secs etc.

Can anyone tell me what is this?

Needing help with my cheap A03s

Couldn't find that one listened anywhere here specifically. I'm pretty sure my phones compromised but I'll probably just get people telling me I'm being paranoid. Just notice a lot of weird stuff going on.
I'll give some examples, but it would be cool if someone else here has an A03s and could give me a full list of the system apps to know for sure if mine has some extra ones that aren't truly factory. Because I've restore it several times and they don't go away.
Like under the apps screen under the basic ones I got apps like Android auto, webview, configapk, customization service, and something called data restore tool, device health services, group sharing, meet, nearby device sharing, quick sharing, quick share, settings..etc. which to my knowledge are pretty normal apps to see on phones right? But I seem unable to control them, if I disable them and go back and check later they mysteriously reenabled again, or after that the permissions lists will be greyed out not being able to do anything. Also there is a app called "permissions controller", as well as ones called "apps", "apps update", "tools", "app recommendations", "settings recommendations"..etc. is that normal? I never noticed that with my old samsung. They are really small file size apps with pretty generic looking icons and they don't let me disable them.
What gets more weird to me though is when I enable the system apps too. I see all kinds of suspicious looking ****.
Like for the android setup, and android system apps there are two of each, and the other two have generic looking icons, also got stuff like configuration restore, audio mirroring, auto hotspot, automation test, bluetooth/bluetooth midi service, call & text on other devices, callbgprovider, camera extensions proxy, carrier login engine, sim tool kit, cell broadcast services, clipboardsaveservice, cmh provider, companion device manager (where I have no idea where my "companion is or how to control it so I must be the one being controlled?", configupdater, csc, dcktimesyncapplication, dynamic system updates, ipservice, enterprise sim pin service, external storage, like 10 different gestural navigation bars, group sharing, iaft, ims service, settings, and logging, input devices, iothiddenmenu, keycustomizationinfobnr, launcher, locale overlay manager, service mode and service mode ril, media and devices, mdmapp, vpndialogs, mmigroup,mmsservice, mobilewips, mtp host, nearby device scanning (2 instances), network diagnostic, nsdswebapp, one handed mode, osulogin, package installer, an app called "people", private share, proxy handler, quick share agent, samsung core services? (is that a real app even? I can disable it but who wants to disable "core" system apps, so touche there if it is a program deployed by a hacker on their app naming skills lol, smart switch agent, 2 instances of software update, system connectivity resources, system uwb/wifi resources, an app called "tasks", tethering, tethering provision and tethering automation, tfstatus/tffunlock always running when I never access them, usbsettings, and theres one called wallpaper services/wallpaper and style that looks really generic which is confusing because I assumed the samsung theme manager just handled all that stuff in one? We also got wearable manager installer running, and sometimes wificalling and wifi direct or work setup will be running when I don't have any of those configured.
Sorry for the huge block of text, I'm sure I missed a bunch i missed because there's some that don't show even when you tap "show system apps", like the skms agent as one example, so got a few general questions for you, so for the file/download system I got a bunch of default apps. There's two different files apps, there's a download manager and download app, and also a storage manager, and ALSO a app called the external storage that always wants to be running but can you explain that if I have no external storage? Is the built in storage space on the a03 called external storage? I even have my drive apps and stuff disabled.
Another things that's suspicious to me is secmediastorage, secvideoengineservice, secsoundpicker, secureelementapplication, media and devices + ext storage. Like why should there be a SECOND video or audio engine running when I'm old school and don't even use cast programs/features or anything like that? In fact it's usually one of the first things I just go ahead and try disable.
I noticed a lot of weird things going on with the display though too, looking really sharp then suddenly almost looking like there's two layers of gui not exactly lined up, like off by a pixels making things look blurrier. Like the one ui home is the default factory launcher right? So why does my phone also have a app called "launcher", plus another hidden launcher or something running in the background? I can't remember the name of it offhand, something GUI..
And I understand the concept of android have a permission controller, and "core apps" but are there actually apps under the system apps named that lol? "permission controller", "samsung core apps" one called "device services"...
also is service mode suppose to be running in the background? I googled into it and know it's a genuine service, but I really don't understand why a lot of these apps are stopping and running or renabling themselves.. It's like I have zero control over my own phone and if I'm just paranoid and they are meant to be just seems like a waste of complete waste of ram/data to me.
****, I was just sitting here thinking for like a few minutes about to post and almost forgot the most suspicious ones I've noticed in last few days. all the "com." overlay apps. I guess I really saw the word "overlay" as something you should be suspicious about until the vpn I recently bought had a feature that is suppose to block web browser based overlays. Then I noticed that MOST of my com. apps are all overlay apps! Lol, ranging from google/samsung to mediatek.
I won't post all of them because there's probably 20 at least but here's a few.

and there's a bunch of com.google.android.overlay.gmsconfig ones /common geotz/ gsa/ photos/
com.google.android.overlay.modules.captiveportallogin.forframework
plus a overlay broadcastreceiver, ext.services, documentsui, permissioncontroller, and sdksandbox one.. tetheringresoverlay, wcmurlsnetworkstackoverlay, locale overlay manager..etc.
Also I get my service through straight talk which I think uses verizon and I noticed when I go to connections/mobile networks and network operators and uncheck the box "select automatically" that for some reason it only wants to connect to a network operator called "Home". I just thought that was kind of a weird and generic name for a network operator. I tried to use a android hidden settings app to change that because it was blocked out and thought I messed up my phone because I no longer had data and couldn't access the menu through the app anymore, but luckily a reformat fixed it but I'm still dealing with all this crap haha.
Can someone tell me I'm not crazy and there's definitely someone that is accessing and controlling my phone without my permission and what would be the best way to go about dealing with this?

Now on to your question...
It is my opinion that the problem may not be with what you are observing, but with your assumptions. In the duplicate thread, you assume two possibilities:
You're being hacked
Your paranoia is justified
Have you thought there may be a third or even fourth option? Such as, maybe you don't understand that much about Android, you don't recognize what you see, you're assuming it's malicious, which combined with your own confirmation bias, has led you to the conclusion that foul play is afoot?
Nothing you have described sounds in any way abnormal. You have a Samsung device running OneUI (Samsung's framework overlaid on top of Android) that is powered by a Mediatek chipset. Everything you describe sounds completely normal to me, with over 10 years of experience in Android, most of that with Samsung devices.
My conclusion, to be frank: You are not being hacked, and your paranoia is unfounded.

OP your post gave me a headache trying to read it.
So...
Have it reflash to the stock firmware if you really think it's behaving erratically and a factory reset doesn't work. Change Google password and all others.
Then be careful what you install.
Don't put in foreign thumb drives or let others use it.
