I have had the evo since the day it came out. Just recently my earpeice speaker has a crackling in it. Will sprint give me any problems cause I am rooted? will I have to load the stock ruu on the phone before I bring it in. I would hate to have to start all over again. But it is hard for me to talk on the phone. If someone knows if they would just replace the speaker or if they would give me a new phone?
just do a back up and then go stock and bring it in.
if they see it is rooted they will blame that as the issue.
I thought if I go back to stock I will loose all my nand backups
No just nand backup, stock it, get it back, root it, run band, your good to go. Backup your nand folder on a computer if it makes you feel safer too.

run band?
Hopefully I will get the same phone back and not a new one.
Yea band, as in bandroid nackup.
blow into the ear piece. mine was cracking two and i think something passed through that little grate and got up against the ear piece. kinda like putting something on a car speaker and it popping and cracking like its blown..
should a least try it
so no follow up?
I get popping/crackling in my on-phone speaker every other call it seems. If I hang up and call again it sometimes will go away. I'm rooted stock.
I figured it was the network and not the phone. Let us know how it goes...
Well I returned my phone back to stock without any root, I also took off any folders/files on the sd card that would show that I had root. I went to the sprint store, they looked at my phone and after 30min they said, "ok, we are going to get you a new/refuribished phone" and I had the choice of getting white, which I am getting. Should have it by Tues or Wed. Then I will be rooting it. I can't stand having my phone stock. I miss my cm6 turbo
I'm curious about this as well. My speaker crackles but only ever with one person that I call. As crazy as it sounds it's only when I call my gf on her Hero.
I know it's not a volume issue because I hear the crackling while the phone is ringing before she even picks up. I was also wondering if it's a network issue cause it never happens on any of my other calls.
I have TEP so I may just see what Sprint says.
Edit: I forgot to add that when I'm talking to her and switch to speakerphone I can still hear crackling so I'm thinking network issue.

I have that a little bit too. Mine seems to be volume though. If I'm maxed on in-call, that's the worst. If I pop it down one click it's not too bad.
I can deal with it, but I have a feeling it may get worse some day
my evo is a lil over a month old and the speaker is blown...the loud speaker in the back of the phone...when i have the volume up it sounds terrible...like a blown house/car speaker...is it hard to change? or should i unroot the phone and take it to sprint?
Yeah that's what I would do. When I had my front earpiece blown I took it to the sprint store and they replaced it while I waited. I would bring a book, because it took over an hour.
so i do have to have it unrooted to get it fixed?

Its not hard to change but the rear speakers seem to be of cheap quality. If you reallly want a good sound output try looking up the x mini 2 portable speaker. As for the rear speaker all you need is a t5 torx driver bit to open the screws on the back.
In my store we don't even look into whether it's rooted or not unless it's a software issue. I wouldn't worry about unrooting it. And as far as repair time, it takes me about 5 minutes to do it...so I don't know why it would take someone an hour. you just unscrew the back housing, pull the old one out, pop the new one in, screw it back together, and you're on your way.
I'd still unroot it just in case they look, couldn't hurt and it would suck if they flagged your account because of it.

Mine is blown as well, it's really annoying with HTC. My hero, about 2-3 months and the speaker blew out.. I used pandora on it over that speaker a lot tho so once I bought my EVO I decided not to play music or anything on the speaker at all... just the ringtones and things like that... and it still effin blew in about 2 months and has been since.
I'm not really wanting to unroot and go through all the hassle but I would really like it fixed =\
**edit** After a quick google search, replacing the speaker looks really easy.. I might just give it a go myself. Where is a good place to get a few tools like the t5 driver? And do you guys know a good place to get a replacement speaker?

You can get the screwdriver at Sears and probably a Lowes/home depot
Sent from my Evo while i should be working
Lowes has a kobalt precison screwdriver set by the screwdrivers on the wall for about $7. Set comes with t4,t5,t6,t7,t8,t9,10 and t15. You can get the speaker off ebay. Same speaker thats in most htc devices. 5 minutes to install very easy if you dont want to unroot and dont have the repair plan.
You can get a replacement speaker form this guy for about $12.00. Or you can order a 5 pack of them for about $50.00 from globaldirect.com.
I'm not calling u a lier but he does have a point... I had a moment b4 and I took it to sprint to get an update and when I got there it took two hrs... and they bricked it on top of that and had to replace it.

PowerAMP has audio controls that could cause clipping of the sound (the distortion you hear). I'd try adjusting the EQ settings.

I haven't used this guy yet, but as my speaker is getting worse by the day I will shortly. I did a bunch of research on the net though, and a quite a few folks have ordered from him with good results. He orders the speakers from global direct (they have a 5 speaker minimum order), then he marks them up a little and resells them one at a time.

**edit** Nevermind, I see what you were saying. I just ordered one from him.. didn't like using paypal because I have a payment dispute currently not settled with them. They better not try to jack my credit card info, even tho I used the "don't have an account" option..
I'm having the same problem with both the rear speaker and the main speaker. I called Sprint and told me I would have to take it in. The closest repair facility is about 30 minutes away and with my current work schedule I wouldn't be able to get over there for a while. Called back and got a very knowledgeable tech who is having a replacement unit sent out.
Hope this doesn't happen again. I rarely have my phone at full volume, never play music over the rear speaker.

Well, The speaker began making crackly death sounds in my epic. From what I've seen via google search and here on the forums, It isn't entirely uncommon.
I've tinkered with some electronics before so i decided to avoid the whole going back to stock thing and picked up a speaker on ebay and replaced it. Along the way i decided to pick apart the failed bit. Took a few pictures but I am unsure of the cause of problems since i damaged the speaker prying the metal cover off. But I figure that one of the corners of the cone is getting popped inward and not letting the speaker do its thing.
If anyone else happens to have a failed/ noisy speaker and cares to take it apart please take a picture or two. I am simply curious as to if the corners are just creasing themselves inward somehow.

I would have of just gone to sprint. But it seemed easier to me to just get the speaker off of ebay for 13 bucks and have an excuse to pop open the back cover. And I am le lazy when it came to going back to stock. Strange there are no void stickers of any sort on the thing though.

If I can find a speaker on Ebay, I will certainly give it a shot. This distortion is really bugging me. If I turn it up, it sounds like crap. If I turn it down, I get no ringtone, so I miss calls.
I got the same issue. I thought it was related to eb13.

glad to see im not the only one with this issue. my speaker sound like ass! unfortunately im not hardware savy enough to gut my epic but im gonna try and get my buddy at the repair center to see if he can fix it for me at his place instead of having to flash to stock to get it fixed then reflashing everything.
I always assumed it was an improper grounding issue, not the speaker itself. Different firmwares and ROMS have produced different results, so I have my doubts about the speaker being the issue.
Ya, mine is "blown" too... but it happened one day while I was at work... on silent. I was also kinda thinking it has more to do with software than hardware... but it hasn't fixed itself yet and it's been almost 2 weeks.
Looks like I might be doing the Odin thing soon, thank goodness for TEP.
Well, mine started to sound blown too. It happened overnight, I wasnt even using the speaker. Im farked too because I dont have insurance on this thing. Is this a software issue or what?

Just for the record, if your wire wont attach again, its because the technicians have a special tool to pop in on and off.
If your speaker isn't working, take it into a repair center. If they can fix it in store and it's under warranty, it will cost you $35. If you have insurance, then it should be no cost. The store I went to was cool about custom roms and rooting, was even asking me about it.The store I went to was not a corporate store as there are no corporate stores in the area that do repairs.
Forgot to mention that if they can't fix it in store, they will send to Samsung and Samsung will send a refurbished model. So in that sense, it may be a good idea to Odin.

I was hoping it would be a software issue but no amount of flashing back to stock would fix it. It started when my alarm went off one morning. Started out fine then turned to crackly death sounds all at once.
So far so good on the replacement speaker however.

yup, exactly how mine malfunctioned. I set the alarm, worked when i set it, then woke up to a gawd awfull crackly noise, and the speaker was blown.
Since i don't have TEP, should i just try and buy it and replace it myself or go back to stock and have the techs look at it at my sprint store?
I am experincing the "blowing" or "bursting" speakers, too, all of a sudden. I am on Bonsai 4.0.1, but I experienced that on stock ROM, too. I wish we can find a solid solution to this intriguing issue.

It might not actually be blown!
Long time reader, first time poster.
Ok, here is what I discovered about the Epic speaker. Like everyone else here I had my speaker die the same way, suddenly was distorted at any normal volume and no sound when you turned the volume to low, after awhile it just up and quit.
One thing i did discover was the if I tapped the speaker module it would start working again but blown sounding, so I thought "hmmm, seems like a loose connection". Got bored the other night and decided to take the speaker module out and see if I could spot a loose connector. No, no such luck, so after tearing the speaker module apart and playing with it, I narrowed it down to a bad solder joint in the ?diode? array under the red goo. when i would flex the cable it the speaker would suddenly start working again normally (no distortion, nice loud volume).
Now, as near as I can tell, Samsung is only using 2 leads of the connector hence the diode array (best guess due to the wiring pattern), voltage one way and the speaker plays, voltage the other way and the vibration motor runs. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
Unfortunately, I cannot say if this is a permanent fix or not, my diodes appear to have taken some damage due to me continuing playing around with the speaker module while it was on (Either cumulative from running it messed up, or maybe I shorted them while I was poking around; but the speaker volume decreased gradually over time, no distortion though). But I do know for awhile everything was working fine, and my speaker worked like it was supposed to.
If any of you have the same problem, and can manage small surface mount work, this might be a way to save a few $$ or get it working again in short order since the only replacement speakers in can find right now appear to be coming out of Hong Kong with a long delivery time.
Hope this helps someone. Thanks for all the help that you guys have given me over the years.
As in everything in life, YMMV.
Hmm, I did not think to check out the wires while i had it out. I no longer have the broken part so if i encounter the issue again i know where to start looking.
Thanks!
I had the same problem. Thankfully i have best buy black tie insurance.

I was already debating taking my Galaxy S2 back because of the pink/yellow tinge camera issue. Now I've discovered a new issue. The earpiece is continually buzzing during phone calls. This is worse if the volume is turned up to maximum. I've had many phones down the years, but this is the first that I've experienced earpiece buzzing.
Has anyone else experienced this, or is this just a one off bad phone?
Thanks
Anyone else experience this?
Thanks

Thanks for the reply.
I've had many phones down the years, but never experienced earpiece "buzzing" before. It's really annoying! I did a search on the web and it seems to be a very common experience with all makes of mobiles. I suppose you can just get a slight duff one!
I contact the T-Mobile UK Support Twitter page about returning it (it's just under 2 weeks old) and they said I had to send it away to get repaired. That's bull**** surely. I though you had 28 days from new to get a handset swapped????? Isn't that UK law.
I get the impression on the net that sometimes stores lie about this so they don't have to give you a new handset.
Anyone clarify this?
Thanks
I'm having the same problem. Went to the service centre, the technician insists that this is normal as long as the speaker is not blown. Sucks lol.
I guess I'll live with it for awhile until I can't take it any longer then I'll have them replace the ear speaker.
Sometimes I get this buzzing noise via Bluetooth headphones only when I'm on a telephone call. But it rare.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
redbullman, did you manage to fix it?
ok I got back my phone (SGS2 international version) from Samsung Service Centre, after a second persuasion they changed the front panel (whole LCD including the front speaker, not sure if the back speaker too, I don't know the structure of the phone).
And now, it's solved!! NO MORE BUZZING when making/receiving calls!
Definitely go ask for an exchange or a change of your panel guys! It's a HARDWARE ISSUE.
I have absolutely no gripes about the Samsung Galaxy S2, best phone I have ever tried....... Okay, just one gripe!
It pertains to the outgoing voice call volume. People I talk to often comment that it's often hard to hear my voice well. This has never been a problem with other mobile phones I have owned in the past. Does there exist a way to boost the outgoing voice volume on this otherwise excellent phone?

I have the same problem i have have discovered its something to do with the noise cancellation. If u disable it people will be able to hear u more clearly. U can disable it while by pressing the menu key while ur in a call

I had a galaxy s2 that the first call I was hard to hear and also the wifi signal was rubbish in comparison to my galaxy s. This was a hardware fault with the sgs2 so I would suggest taking back to get changed under warranty.
Many people have reported poor call quality / echo etc. For many just removing the case helps.
I can't believe that by using a case, call quality is affected but its true. It happens to me. When people complain I remove the case and call quality is fine.
I now have one of those perforated cases (the mesh looking ones) and this doesn't happen any more.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
That's a good point, if the microphone for speaking on the bottom or the microphone on the top for noise cancelling is covered then, definitely, call quality will be terrible.
Try drilling a hole in the case if it does cover either hole...
I had the issue too - turned out it's the builtin noise cancellation that was the culprit.
If you're using stock rom, press menu button during a call, select more and turn off noise cancellation (or whatever it's called). Should give instant results. Unfortunately it seems like it's a per call setting change (ie. it's not remembered and you have to turn it off whenever the issue appears).
I'm using VillainRom 3.0 and installed VRTweaks - from there you can disable it permanently. I don't know if other rooms have that feature.
Hope it helps.
/Martin

Considering it doesnt happen with stock roms, i would suggest posting directly to the appropriate custom rom thread or contact the developer directly.

My experience has been that it's the other way around. When I was on stock rom, people couldn't hear me. The good custom roms have a tonne of built-in code; included is the increase in mic volume to 100% to remove the stock issue. You can do it manually on stock if you want but I think it resets if you reboot.
I have tried upping the mic volume via the factory settings, but it didn't really help much.
However, I do have a little intriguing update..
I thought I could see some debris inside the tiny microphone hole, so I decided to be a bit adventurous and got hold of a very thin needle and started prying it around inside the hole, trying to both expand the hole and as such and also remove any potentially blocking debris.
Result? It has been very promising, I've had two long lasting phone calls since then, and I asked the persons to whom I was speaking, if they could hear me better than usually, and the answer in both cases was a resounding 'yes'!
(I did the same needle trick on the top microphone aswell)
So far so good, it seems to have had a very positive effect indeed.
Word of warning though; you should do this with the phone turned off. I learned that the hard way. Apparently prying around with a needle can mess with some of the electronics ;-) in my case it caused my phone to semi-reboot and reset all my app folder organization, so I had to place all my apps in folders again, argh!

Very interesting! I wanted to try that some time ago but I did not dare.
Anyway, in my case, the top microphone works perfectly, because if someone can't hear me, I activate de speaker. And when I do this, the phone activates the top microphone instead of the bottom microphone.
