Slow data and dropped calls? Las Vegas - EVO 4G General

is anyone else here from las vegas? I have noticed bad reception in areas where i used to have great service and full bars. Do you think sprint is doing something to their towers? maintenance/upgrades?

Appears so, slow data speeds nation wide and lots of dropped calls.

Yep ..im in the Las Vegas area too and get dropped calls and data is slow .. so I use the verizon hack 00001.prl and get up to 1.8mbps up and 900kbs down. ( before I was getting 300kb up and down).

I was just in Vegas for 8 days and Sprint was the only carrier that worked consistently for me.
I'm rocking an iPhone 4, HTC EVO, and a Verizon MiFi.
AT&T = outright SUCKED
Verizon = 1x the whole time
Sprint = 3G 2mbps the entire time and when on 4G always avg of 6d/1up.

ill have to try that trick, thanks for the advise man

Sprint did announce their new network plan today. Probably encompasses Vegas.
But uh, shot in the dark here: Try out the CM 6.1.2 WiMax Alpha2. Supposedly gets wicked good 3G speeds, WiMax too.

Im not having the dropped call issue.. but my data speed has definitely gone to the crapper.

Neither of these issues on the north side of town for me.

I had some issues in Vegas with my EVO on sprint as well

I live in Las Vegas and have not notice any dropped calls or slow data connection

Make sure you report the dropped call on the automated line so you can receive credit and inform them of the issue.

Im just wondering WTF is wrong with Sprints network. There have been reports of slow data speeds all over the android boards lately.

slooooow data here too in south...maybe its the nasty weather right now across the US?

I'm getting VERY slow 4G in the SF/Bay Area region, usually doesn't even get to 800 kbps with full bars.. Dropped calls too

Vegas local here. I haven't had any dropped calls, but I had the HTC Touch Pro 2 from September 2009 to June 2010 and I noticed a significant drop in data speeds at around the time that the EVO was released. The only explanation that I have is that a lot of people saw a 4.3" 1GHz Android phone with a forward facing camera and either upgraded from dumbphones to the EVO or switched carriers.
On the other hand, I attended CES this year and so many people didn't have data services on the show room floor. The shocker? I did. I had a friend with an iPhone 4 and she couldn't connect to 2G or 3G. On top of that, she was visiting the city and was at the Excaliber; she had no 3G data on the strip, at all.
The population of Vegas jumped 136,000 people last weekend with some of the most tech savvy people on the planet.
So Sprint kind of stood the test of time. Just throwing that out there. Perhaps this is also the reason for some of the slow data and dropped calls the you've recently experienced. Although it doesn't explain if you're still having such problems.
One more thing, we suffer from the same "Death Grip" as the iPhone 4. Want proof? Set up a WiFi connection and grip your phone like you normally would, for right handed people, thumb on volume buttons, palm over the HTC logo and fingers down the left side of the phone. You'll notice that the WiFi notification icon will drop a bar. Then, if you grasp the phone by not covering up the back and just pinch your EVO in your fingers it will regain a bar. I'm unsure if this is a graphical error in the software or a true Death Grip. Just an observation though. This may effect dropped calls for all we know.

I was in Vegas for CES and constantly turned on wireless tethering so my buddies with iPhone 4 could latch onto my phone to get on the internet.

It was pretty bad during CES... at least it worked much better than AT&T.

Sprint 4G in North Chicagoland!

I'm amazed, day 1 of launch I didn't get 4G anywhere except Chicago!
Over the past couple days I am getting 4G even in Round Lake & Grayslake, most surprising if you are aware of the area. It's relatively lower income in the area compared to the suburbs 10min South.
Around Lincolnshire I hit 3.8Mbps! I was under the impression 3Mbps was the cap, that's what I get (solid speed) when I checked 4G in Chicago.
I wont lie, I'm impressed, 4G was scarce just a week ago!
No 4g for me :<
You are lucky....
I live in Lake Forest - No 4g for me, and it's a very affluent area. Worse, I get NO SIGNAL in my home (3g / 4g, cell).
I specifically left AT&T because of dropped calls and lack of 3g service. I may have to leave Sprint because of no service....
Any idea if they will be adding towers anytime soon?
I wish there was a way to test Verizon before I switched again.
I have no idea, but hey...you've got another 2+ weeks to decide.
That does stink though, in general I've experienced good service...have you upgraded the radio on your Evo? That makes a difference.
I've rooted, and have a de-crapified build with the latest updates.
The lack of service also kills my battery, as it's continually trying to connect unless I go into airplane mode.
Major bummer :<

Call retentions and tell then you get lousy voice service. They gave me a free Airave and waved the monthly charge. Won't help with data much, with data, but works great for voice. You need a broadband connection with it.
I'm in Evanston and I've picked up 1 or 2 two bars of 4G while outside. Inside I had to get an Ariave. Speeds haven't been impressive so far, 3G actually has been faster when I've tested.
Have you tried flashing a verizon radio to your Evo? Maybe a better signal.
if you go downtown you get what i have in my sig
at my place by midway i get about 4mbps. yesterday i was testing and i was getting around 1 to 1.5 but today testing again i get around 3.5 to 4.5. maybe the weather was messing things up yesterday....i was testing while it was raining. today its gorgeous outside...
No 4G around Waukegan, IL either. Though I get full 3G coverage in and around this area, so I don't mind since data still loads pretty quick.
Grayslake has a 4Gtower - from there it's a long run south till the next. Lake Forest doesn't want any towers on their precious skyline so signal there sucks. Drives me nuts.
I ride the train into downtown from Grayslake so I've been watching 4g rollout closely - will stick with the Hero for a bit yet I suspect. No compelling reason to work around early upgrade mess and short supply. Yet.

Sprint's Service???

I am just wondering what the fine people here at xda think about sprint. I am thinking about switching from tmobile and would like to know stuff like how good is the coverage, is 4g at all fast? What about Customer Service? Any info would greatly be appreciated
I'm in the LA area. The coverage is really not bad at all, and outside of urban LA in the rural/desert parts of SoCal it can be surprisingly good.
4g is faster than 3g, but the coverage is very very spotty and in-building penetration is lousy. I'd say it's on the cusp between usable and unusable, frankly.
Customer service is a lot better than it used to be.
Sent from my PG06100 using XDA App
I'm in southeast Missouri, but I work on the inland waterways: Arkansas, Ohio, Mississippi Rivers. All I can say is on the river I've got service in three times the places I did with ATT.
When I do get wimax, its building penetration is indeed terrible. Customer support is the absolute best.
Sent from my MikShift.
Yeah, cust svc is really good so far. I've only been with Sprint for a little more than a month and called them three times, but they've been great. I'm in the Chicagoland area (on the border of Chicago) and service has been great. I definately agree with 4G being hard to get indoors but I don't need it enough to even want to use it. Plus I have wifi everywhere at my usual locations. My texts usually go through right away and I don't get calls not going through, unlike I did with T-Mobile.
The only problem I have is how damn slow the 3g is around here.
EVO Shift and XDA app
I live in the Washington DC area and I have great coverage for 3g. I usually can get a 4g signal outside but, like others, I have noticed that 4g doesn't penetrate buildings well. I like customer service for the most part.
Yeah im in the charlotte area so i have 4g and its pretty quick but the 3g speeds in this area arent that great. There are a ton of people with sprint in this area bc its cheaper than verizon and att blows, not sure if an area can be over saturated with so many people pulling from sprints data service but i wouldnt be surprised.
Sent from my PG06100 using XDA App
It's nice to hear that customer service is good because all I have been reading is that sprint has terrible customer service. As far as 4g, My tmobile G2 hardly gets 4g inside my house but that is why I use wifi. How is call quality in buildings?
Sprint's customer service has improved dramatically in the last year. They went from last to 1st or 2nd.
We just found out someone stole our phone information and started making calls out of the country. Sprint has been really good so far in handling this. I have to call them again tomorrow regarding our bill. I will report back to see how easy they take the charges off.
sorry to hear that buddy. Hope everything works out well
I have had sprint for a year and a half and so far no complaints.
Service is reliable virtually everywhere i have been (there are a few spotty areas but you find that with any carrier)
Customer service has been great, luckily i have only had to call once or twice and it's never been because of something major.
my only complaint is their 3G has not been the fastest thing in the world. it's functional and reliable, just not crazy fast.
On a good day at work i can hit between 800kb/s and 1mb/s and it's fairly consistent, when i go to Boston or even near by cities it's about the same and this is across 4 devices (blackberry tour, palm pre, HTC Evo, Evo Shift) on my CR-48 netbook with a verizon data card i average 2mb/s and on good days i get almost 3mb/s
on the flip side, data is reliable, i've never had an issue connecting to the data network.
At the end of the day, i'm a happy customer phone calls work, texts work, data works and i haven't had any issues with service, billing, etc.
I'm in the Seattle area. 3G coverage is great, 4G is spotty as others have said, but fast where you can get it.
I sometimes drop to 1 bar of 3G in my house, but it never drops. I average about 500kbps up and down at home. I've gotten pretty consistently 800k-1Mbps down, 500-700k up around my area.
Although Sprint's 4G map says I should have "in building" 4G coverage both at work and at home I get nothing in my house or my office. Step outside and I get a bar or two and maybe 3Mbps down, 500k up. In better coverage areas I've gotten 8Mbps down, and over 1Mbps up. What I'm getting at is 4G seems to be a lot more spotty than their coverage map indicates, but I understand it will likely expand and it doesn't bother me too much.
I made the switch from T-Mo to Sprint and there is no way I'm going back. Sprint's customer service is the best that I've ever experienced and totally pwns T-Mo's. The 3G speeds are average but consistent. The 4G speeds are fairly fast if you're in the right area; it won't work worth a dam in most buildings however.

What's weird is I had Clear internet service for a week or so to try it out and I got great signal and pretty solid 6-8Mbps download speeds -- no hiccups whatsoever. I ended up opting for Fios because... well come on, do I have to explain. Anyway, I was under the impression that Clearwire and Sprint shared Wimax towers. Look at their coverage maps and they're almost identical. Maybe the Wimax radios in the phones are somehow less sensitive than the Clear modems?

I'm not sure sensitive is the word...the adjustment will make it accept and cling to a weaker signal than it would otherwise, but it doesn't actually increase the radio's sensitivity in such a way as to make the signal (relatively) stronger.
If you ever used to mess around with police scanners or ham radio or the like, think of it as opening up the squelch a little bit (i.e., turning the squelch knob counterclockwise)...it will make the radio stop scanning and try to receive weaker transmissions, but it doesn't necessarily prevent them from sounding all staticky and useless. Same principle here, if I'm not mistaken.

Yeah, I've got it set at -110. It helped noticeably, but it's still not that great. The tower is less than a mile away from my house too.
I live in West Michigan, and the service here is actually not that good lately. Sprint says some towers are down in my area, and they have been issuing partial refunds for service interruptions. I guess that's the best case scenario if your going to have bad service...
My 4g connection is amazing!! Except when it disconnects ..My 3g connection is shady at times very very slow I can't even view streaming videos or music like pandora. I'm in tx

Anybody in the Waterloo \ Cedar Falls, Iowa area with REALLY poor 3G speed?

We only have 3G speeds in the area, but my 3G is god awful slow.
Running a speed test on the US Cellular phone I have, I get around 1.5 meg down and 700k up, with the Evo Shift I'm getting 100-200k down and barely anything up.
Its a real deal killer especially after I just got done arguing about having to spend $100 for insurance claim to fix my Hero (Charging port just fell out the bottom) or paying an early termination and getting a phone I really want from another provider. Obviously they worked with me to get me the Evo Shift, but now my data is horrid slow...
Edit: Just did another speed test, getting 700Kbit/s down right now 131Kbit/s up with the Evo Shift on Sprint, getting 1630Kbit/s down and 200Kbit/s up with the HTC Desire on US Cellular
I used to blow US Cellular away
I sometimes get double digits down at my house, and rarely break 400. I've noticed a lot of folks saying this in many locations recently, and sprint has no answer. I don't know.
EVO Shift and XDA app
My Shift is the worst Sprint device for data I've ever owned. Its also the 6th smartphone I've owned from Sprint so yes I do have a lot to compare it to. I even had EVDO Rev.O phones that always pulled data faster. I've tried to set it to EVDO only and it still falls back to 1x all the time even though I have 3-4 bars of EVDO signal. Also tried the proxy fix and reactivating it over the air again. My nephews Optimus S can get 1Mb down all day long here and I can't even watch a Youtube video. Disgusted....

Soo...massive complaints to Sprint? Something must have happened to their data network or towers around here lately. It hasn't always been this way.

Now an unpleasant surprise from Sprint

EDIT: Signal improvement went away... see followup post below.
Original posting:
---------
Meant to post about this two days ago, and got busy.
I've been one of those with near zero signal in my home neighborhood. I live in Scotts Valley, near Santa Cruz CA. Since I got my Epic last October, I have been extremely frustrated that I get 0/1 bars at home, the signal is too weak to be usable for phone calls (constant digital dropouts -- conversation is impossible), and of course pathetic data rates when I can actually get a connection, which ALSO is never reliable.
When I bought the phone, a tower within sight of my home on another ridge was scheduled to get a Sprint site before the end of the year (2010), according to their website map. Then, this upgrade disappeared. I called, and no one knew anything, of course.
I've been roaming on VZW, who have a 4/5 bar signal here, via Roam Control ever since I got the phone. Fine for calls and text, no data worth speaking about.
Woke up two days ago, and was at first mystified, then thrilled to see 5 solid bars on Sprint!!!! 3G data rates consistently 1100/750 down/up!!!
Apparently, they finally got around to upgrading their coverage in the area. 'bout time
4G? Don't even go there. Not yet, not expecting it... Ever.
Wow my 3g speeds are 200 down max and I have no 4g
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA Premium App
In a way, I have Sprint's poor coverage in my hood to thank for me needing to root and get acquainted with XDA. Otherwise no Roam Control. But it would rock to get a similar upgrade around here. Zoning and landscape just make it really unlikely. If I go just half a mile north or west it's totally different, with 4G and all. Hell, I can watch Netflix over 4G at my office, just not where I stay. I hope your story is repeated far and wide.
I've had the same experience as you. I've been with sprint for 11 years now and my signal is now amazing at the house. 2600 kbps dl, 550 ul. On average, of course. They upgraded the tower nsar my house last year.

UPDATE: After some joy, Sprint decided to turn off whatever they did. Back to 0/1 bars here at home, inability to use voice without constant dropouts, no data to speak of...

That describes me. At home forced roaming so I can actually make and receive calls, data over wifi.
With the RC tasker plugin, phone automatically switches between forced roaming when in range of my home network, then back to "automatic" when out of range.
It's a workable solution, but not something I should have to do.

This may be a bit off topic, but I roam ALLLLL day when I'm at work, it gets me quite angry, and I continue to use data and phone while I "roam" , and saw a charge for roaming one time but called sprint and asked them how the **** I am roaming within my coverage area. They fed me some BS but took the charge away. I've never seen a charge for roaming since. Do you guys get charges?
So far as I know, with my family 2 phone everything plan, roaming is included.
Edit:
I just looked, it doesnt say roaming anywhere, but when looking at changing my services, the only roaming option given is Canada Roaming.
Edit 2:
Found it.

Same place. They show upgrades happening but I don't see it. Its frustrating. I have 6 towers near me and get pathetic to OK coverage on base, but off bade its pretty good. Problem is I used to be on Verizon and they are strong in my area. I hate to switch back but I been w spring almost 2 years now, my wife has been w them 7 years. I am pretty close to cancelling this and moving on. I really like sprints line of phones but w 3 lines, I feel I can do better unless they have real changes they are making. I am holding on to the hold of the 800mhz I have seen floating around and was under the impression that that's what network vision was bringing me. Now 5 months after talk of it...still no great data. When everyone on Verizon is sucking data slam up. A consistent 1mb where ever I go isn't extreme to me when that's pretty much how Verizon treated me years ago. Now all my Verizon friends at seeing 2+mb
Same here...they upgrade some sites but nothing gets better. Even tech support said they upgraded one tower and was able to give me details. Still sub 100 kilobit speeds from this tower.
Well according to sprint next month I should have better service... needless to say if I dont see any difference then I'm gone cause I work 50+ hours a week and have no service wat so ever so if no improve bye bye sprint

Where I live it's a struggle to get over 100 kbit on the 3g and 1 mbit on the 4g when it's available but It is better than AT&T.
Sprint unlimited is a joke, it's like offering unlimited mileage on an auto lease and then you find out it's a yugo that can't go much faster than 1 mph.
I can't break 1 gig a month because the data rates are so slow.
My plan is to drop sprint when my contract is up. You can sign a new contact and get cheaper prices on high end phones.
Wow 100kb? Yuck, I would have left them long ago. Hell, I roam at 130kb! I know sorta because I work on an air force base and in some spots data is non existent. Its all about location. Sprint service isn't that bad guys.... I get great service in Omaha, NE .. however... 4g is virtually non-existent, which is retarded considering im required to pay for it. I have had verizon, alltel (when it existed), StraightTalk, AT&T.... I would say Sprint and StraightTalk (YES STRAIGHT TALK) provided the best service for me in terms of dropped calls and data. AT&T is a joke.
When I was using straight talk I had their nokia smart phone....if I recall correctly.... im pretty sure their 3g service ran off verizon towers, im not sure though.
A tower was marked recently as having recieved a data speed upgrade within the past 6 months near my niece's high school. We were there for a basketball game, 6pm to about 8pm at night on thursday. I did a speed test and saw 1200kbps. I was impressed. By my house it is still 200-300kbps at times dipping down to less than 100 or in the middle of the night peaking around 450.
From the looks of things the upgrades should be heading towards towers in my area soon. I am curious to see how it goes, as I would love to get better 3g speeds. I have some crappy 4g right now but its so spotty and the battery drain so significant 4g is just pointless to me.
Is there a site like this for Verizon? In case someone would like to (hypothetically) change prl's and force roam to Verizon in certain areas? It would be handy to know.

I live in Los Angeles. I've noticed my 4g improve in reliability, but decrease in speed.
My 3g is abysmal. Like, almost worthless. Once in a blue moon I'll get 200+ kb/s, but usually it is sub 100.
Calls/texts are generally fine though.

I'm not seeing a huge problem with Sprint, I did 3 tests like this and they all came out roughly this fast. I live in the Twin Cities in Minnesota and I can stream Pandora without any interruptions back and forth from my 40 min commute. When I head to my dads place (its 3 hours away in the middle of nowhere) I can still stream Pandora basically skipless the whole way. I hardly ever use 4g though since its a battery suck and overkill 99% of the time, and it doesn't reach into my apartment . I also don't roam very often, automatic system select rarely works with data without some fiddling. I only use roaming at my dad's house since verizon is the only provider out there. Otherwise I'm pretty happy with Sprint
