When I try to set a custom ringtone in a contact it only gives me the option to set the default/standard ringtones (the lame ones).
I have music on my phone.
How do I use the music I transfered to the phone as a ringtone for a contact?

Try Rings Extended. I use that.
create a folder on your sdcard called "Ringtones" and put the files you want to use in there and they will show up on the ringtones list.
How about notification sounds?

Buy or Download Ringo Pro or Lite, I use it for my SMS tones so i know if its worth goin to my phone or not haha.
Add a 'notifications' folder to your memory card.
Copy the tones you want to the folder.
They should then be visible in email, calendar, sms tone settings.
@CodeMonkey
at first i put 'Notifications' but didn't worked out, LOL i thought my magic wont have any problems recognizing 'Notifications' and 'notifications'
it needed to be all small letters to work AND ALSO the 'notifications' folder must be inside the 'Music' folder of your card.
Thanks alot CodeMonkey you ARE my HERO =p
btw i can't forward messages sent to me to my other friends,
also there is no inbox, outbox,sent messages etc.
SMS in magic is like a chat...
Thanks heaps, was just trying to figure out how to do this!! Didn;t need to put notifications in music though, just straight on the sdcard and it worked a charm.
Thanks!

Open your message and do a long press, this will bring up the menu to forward your messages. This applies to the stock Message app and chompSMS.
@aniriand
my bad dude, yes you it also works even if the folder is not inside the 'Music' folder
@BigRD
Thanks dude for that one oh men im really loving this phone
Note that you can do the same for alarm tones with a folder called alarms (on the root of the card) and ringtones (with a folder called ringtones).
download rings extended from the market... it easy to use
@whitechocolate
i dont have android market on my phone, just slideme
and i think making folders is better than installing apps
@CodeMonkey thanks for that another useful info ^_^
were not allowed to post warez on here but hopefully i can do this...
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=ringdroid.apk+rapidshare
its a free app so shouldnt be deleted
can anyone point in me in the right direction on how to specify a mp3 / wav file for:
1. Incoming Call Ringtone
2. SMS
3. E-Mail
I dont mind editing the regitry if someone could point me to the location.
Also do the ring tones have to be installed in \Windows\rings ?
thanks.
1. Put the MP3 in the My Documents>My Ringtones folder
2. Put the MP3 in the root Windows folder
3. Don't know but I'd imagine it's the same as SMS tones
Put the files in \windows then go to settings tab, sound and display, there you get ringtone setting, then below notification sounds for the rest.
Hiya.
I am working on a ringtone app. Mr-tones.
Just about done and ready to post the release.
I am curious if the registry settings for for the HD2 are the same as for the rest of us?
Of course if it's unique for the HD2 I would like to add those settings...
Thanks much.

I've managed to sort the ringtones out, ( I wasnt looking hard enough ) but if you want to tell me the registry locations for the stuff you already have, and I can confirm them for you? or if you dont want to post it here you can pm me? either way its up to you.
Or alternatively I can test the program see if it works?
Can anyone recomend a notification or profile manager that can provide some or all of the following features
1) Different notification sound for sms and email (currently i can not find a way to set a different tone for SMS and the HTC mail client)
2) Repeat notification for sms or missed call - ie repeat notification every x mins
3) Set up sound profiles ie, work, home etc rather than just the 3 standard profiles that exist on the phone
I'm suprised at how limited the standard notification settings are (unless im looking in the wrong place!)
Thanks

You're looking in the wrong place
If you go to the SMS application and then press Menu, you can set the notification sound. Same goes for the E-mail application.
For Profiles there are numerous apps in Android, for example: Free - Setting Profiles Lite http://www.androlib.com/android.application.com-probeez-liteprofiles-xipF.aspx or paid - Locale http://apps.doubletwist.com/Locale/1577439657811856040

Thanks for the advice. However i am looking for something that can repeat an sms notification as the LED stops flashing after 5 mins.
Handset does reminders, smspopup allows custom notifications for each contact there are many profiles apps out there... but no one app seems to do everything yet.
That should of course read Handcent (predictive text be damned).
You should also check out Missed Reminder and Quick Profiles.

I've been using this application for a while "Setting Profiles" since the Hero and now on the Desire.
http://andappstore.com/AndroidApplications/apps/Setting_Profiles_Full
It's not free, but definitely worth the money.
If anyone decides to use that site to purchase applications, first create an account, and download the AndAppStore Client to your phone, where you login and then can see all the applications you purchased and download from there.
The approach used in Setting Profiles is brillient, you create profiles and conditions (triggers) seperately. And above that has a homescreen widget too.
Search for the Lite version in the Market and try it out, which is limited to one profile/condition I think.
I, too, am using Setting Profiles. As mentioned above, definately worth the money. So many options.
thanks guys. setting profiles seems like a good tool.

I want to set my own tone for my messages. I have had the mobile just and a week and I am to tired to sit and find it myself, I have tried but just end with a migraine...........
I am also wondering what the term "rooting" means? PLEASE EXPLAIN....
only way to set a tone for messages is to download a ringtone client from the market or when your connected to computer is to manuelly put music tracks in the defualt message tone folder, there is a app called "ringtone" that you can load your mp3 track in to and cut down to use the part of the tone you want to use,
