Hey there
I am in a weired situation that I was expecting. So here is how it all went down.
- I have an Iphone, however Bought an Xperia X10 from Rogers wireless store and got it unlocked.
- Brought it over to California and put my At&T sim in it (which has Iphone data plan and all that jazz)
- Set up the following APN details
Name: AT&T
APN: wap dot cingular
Proxy: leave blank
Port: leave blank
Username:WAP at CINGULARGPRS.COM
Password:CINGULAR1
Server: leave blank
MMSC: mmsc dot cingular dot com
MMS Proxy: wireless dot cingular dot com
MMS Port: 80
MCC:310
MNC:410 (note. this could also be 310, 41 or 15)
APN Type: leave blank
- After setting up the APN I could see the 3G and the data going back and forth. Content with that. I took the sim out and started using Iphone as usual.
Today I decided to make a final switch to Xperia x10 and put the sim back in the X10 and lo and behold, It wont pick the data connection at all. I checked the APN.. it was the same as given above, tried restarting it but no love.
After couple of hours, i was messing around and it suddenly starting showing E for Edge but no 3G (which i used 2 days ago for half a day). Even the Edge is sporadic, comes when it feels like paying a visit... and goes away when feels like it.. i had booty calls more reliable then this connection
I am pulling my hair out because I am not sure what is going on here. Even though it seems like Edge is connected, but its so slow that I may end having a couple of kids before Facebook will update. No sign of 3G at all .. which by reading through the threads seems like is an easy task for rest of the guys !!
Can you please help me with whats going on. Am I the anomaly ? Did I miss something (all i did was to setup APN nothing else), do I need to some other settings that I am not aware of ?
Any help that you can provide will help me a lot, I dont want to give up just yet ..
the phone can set the settings for you automatically. there is an option for this. i forgot the exact steps but you can find this in the Mobile network settings.
Settings -> wireless controls -> mobile network -> automatic something

Might not have that option if he didn't debrand his x10. Just go to sony ericsson site and support page. Pick support for x10i and give them your info and they'll send you the settings.

You might need to have the smartphone data plan provisioned on your account instead. I am pretty sure the iphone is a different plan in their billing system based on our company bill I review each month.
I just brought my x10a rogers locked phone today and I set up APN using information above. I am able to get 3g data. I did call AT&T and change my data service from iphone data to a Non AT&T smart phone data. I dont think you need to debrand the phone because I didn't and the phone works fine!
can not send MMS on x10a on at&t apn settings
I also have an unlocked Rogers X10a, and I am currently using it with the $10 Media Net data plan from AT&T. Everything seems to be working except picture messaging.
Here are my current APN settings: (btw my phone is NOT debranded)
Name: Media Net
APN: wap.cingular
Proxy: wireless.cingular.com
Port: 80
Username: [email protected]
**Password: CINGULAR1
Server: localhost
MMSC: mmsc.cingular.com
MMS Proxy: 66.209.011.032
MMS Port: [blank]
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
APN type: <not set>
**Password is case sensitive
Does anyone know how to get the picture messaging to work?
I have resolved the issue by debranding the phone.
Once you debrand the phone, the automatic internet setting button becomes enabled. All you have to do is to tap it.. and every thing gets updated with the proper setting including MMS
Can you point me to which thread you followed to debrand your phone? I've been to 3 different threads, including the one on here, and the one on xperiax10.net
According to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=6571098 the new sony ericsson pc companion will no longer work.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Glad to hear that you're still using the Media Net data plan instead of being automatically switched to the smartphone data plan. I'm currently using an N97 and have been thinking about upgrading the x10a from Rogers, but have been hesitant because I didn't want to be forced into the new 2gb smartphone data plan.

Your brother made an excellent choice by not getting an iPhone or any other at&t smartphone. The advantage of buying an unlocked and/or unbranded phone outside of at&t is that you can utilize the $15 media net ($10 w/ family text) data plan. Since our IMEI number is not registered in the at&t database as a smartphone, we are not required to use at&t's $30 data plans. I had the $10 data plan for years and always bought phones from Canadian networks like Rogers. Lastly, by unbranding your phone, you now have the ability to get updates from Sony Ericsson earlier. Traditionally, updates that are released by the manufacturer have to be approved by the network carrier before final release to the consumer. With an unbranded phone, you get the update without carrier approval. For me, I can't wait for the Android 2.1 update from Sony Ericsson to come out at the end of this year.
I hope that helps, if your brother can't send picture messages, make sure to unbrand his phone.
Good luck!

I think that's more along the lines of debranding it from x10i to x10a or vice versa!! just stick to debranding to whatever version you have.. (x10i or x10a)

I debranded my Rogers X10a (White) to X10a Generic America BR (R1FB001) listed on the esato debranding tutorial. "Automatic Internet Settings" is still disabled on the phone and the manual APN settings for AT&T only helps with data connection but the MMS still doesn't work.
So, wondering if anyone can backup their AT&T APN settings with MMS working using the free app "APN Backup & Restore" and post it here we can all use. I would appreciate if someone can email me the file if they can't post it here. I can PM my email if you can do.
Thanks.

Quick question, you said you use non smartphone, data do you get 3G speed? can you post what kind of speed you getting using Speedtest.net app? When I got my x10a I called At&t and they changed my data from iphone to non-smartphone and I didnt get any data at all for some reason. They have to change my data service to a smartphone for me to get 3g service. Thanks
To anyone on the medianet plans with at&t, even if your x10s imei isn't in the database you could be put on a smartphone data plan automatically. I used to work for them (before my job went to Manila without me) and i would get multiple calls each day regarding this. I think they can notice differences in the way data is accessed. Just a heads up for all the at&ters on this forum
Tell AT&T that you changed your phone. They will need your phones IMEI number activated on their side. BTW, make sure you have smartphone data plan if you want the full featured browsing, etc. I don't know if regular data plan works on x10a (mine didn't.. I use to have blackberry which also has 3g/edge but doesn't support full featured browsing, etc.)
Check your phone info service by pressing these buttons in sequence (L = Left, R = Right): L - R - R - L - R - L - L - R
Check Model Info. If it says ( X10a, Generic GLOBAL, Generic ) use the Auto Internet settings in your phone. If it says ( X10a, Canada, Rogers ) use the Sony Ericsson OTA wizard -- (sonyericsson(dot)com/ota/wxhtml/otawizard)
Hope that helps.

I have uploaded a copy of my MMS settings per your request. If you have the chance, head over to X10 development forum, and take a look at the x10 Rooting Guide. I think rooting your phone can also help you debrand it.

Just wondering if the $10 data plan was still working for Tmobile N1 users who changed the APN settings. What kinds of speeds are you getting?
$10 data plan still working for me. Located in Southern California (San Bernardino area). Getting speeds of 2.5mb down, 1.2mb up.
which one is this, is it that internet for dumb phones one?
How do you do this? Wont they just change you back to the higher priced internet?

Works for unbranded phones like the Nexus, or Nokia N900. On you account you need to put that you have some dumbphone like the Razr, or a Nokia without a full browser. I found this through google:
1.Navigate to the wireless & networks page on the settings menu of the N1.
2.Scroll to the bottom and select Mobile Networks and then Access Point Names
3.Delete all current APN's. Do this by first selecting the APN, touch the N1 settings softbutton and select 'Delete APN'
4. Now create a new APN by hitting the button again and then "New APN'
5.The first APN you will create will have these settings:
Name: T-mobile US
APN: internet2.voicestream.com
MCC: 310
APN Type: default
all other parameters are set to 'not set'
6. Now create another APN with these settings:
Name:T-Mobile US-MMS
APN: epc.tmobile.com
MCC:310
MNC:260
APN Type:mms

Been using the 5.99 tzones plan since back in the day and it works perfect for me with default apn settings.

Yes it still works (internet2.voicestream.com APN).

I thought the APN had to be set to internet2.voicestream.com, and the mms set to epc.tmobile.com. After googling around, with that setup you shouldnt have any issues that im aware of.

T-Zones is different from $10 web2go. epc.tmobile.com only works with T-Zones but not web2go. Looks like T-Mobile starts blocking unbranded smartphones from using epc.tmobile.com when it's on T-Zones.

i was too. i was thinking to myself the hassle i would have to go through going through craigslist to sell the phone (paid $240 off contract for it!) and having to buy a replacement phone (i was leaning towards an hd2) that was compatible with t-zones still
Update: about 30 mins ago I got the upgrade screen of doom. Went to my apn settings and changed to internet2. Still didn't work. Before I threw the towel in I changed back to default and am using it to make this post. Wonder how long it will take them to shut me down again.
Got my P6800 today...
I've read here (and elsewhere online) that I could simply use my current AT&T SIM (unlimited grandfathered data plan with iPhone 3gs) and as long as I don't go crazy with BW, it should go unnoticed.
So I did (just for a couple of minutes to make sure it works), and a few hours later I got a text msg and an email from AT&T suggesting that I call them to get "an appropriate" data plan.
So it looks like they flag a tablet right away and not based on usage. When I signed up (before the age of tablets) I don't remember them specifying anything that prevents me from switching but I'm sure it's somewhere in the fine print.
I'm not a heavy data user but I don't want to give the unlimited plan unless I have to. Would be happy to hear some thoughts an recommendations on how to handle it.
Thanks
O
P.S
the 7.7 is awesome. just sux that AT&T ruined my happy day with that email :-(
Have they actually throttled your speeds? I'm not your lawyer, but you could just ignore it for the time being.
Past experience
I had the same experience last year with the Tab 7.0, with phone capabilities. I had an unlimited plan with old iPhone. I had to switch to I believe 4G per month, plus tethering cost about $10.00 more, once I did, never a concern or a problem since. It is their way to eliminate all unlimited plans.
At least that was my experience. I believe when it occurred when folks got the 7.0 w/phone (European version and custom ROM) if you don't respond, soon your data will be cutoff, so then you have to call or pull Sim card. May not be true today, but it was last year, happened to me.
What APN were you using..? Was this from an iphone 3g,3gs,4,4s..? If im correct when you get an iphone 4s the account is provisioned for hspa+. I am using a sim from an iphone 4 and have yet to receive a message. So it seems strange.. ive had my tab for a few weeks already...

Greedy bastards, thank god the merger didn't go through. I can imagine how many people will jump ship once the T-Mobile - att roaming agreement goes through and all those iphone users join T-Mobile

Been using ATT Prepaid for about 2 weeks and no problem with that.
mine is a 3gs iphone. Not pre paid card.
Dont think they changed anything. The email said i need to call them to get a suitable plan.
I dont stream and never passed 2g on my iphone so i should be ok with a 3-4 g plan but it still feels like a rip off.
I doubt ignoring it will make it go away. Im just wondering if there is any chance of arguing about it and win...
O
Try adding an APN named Broadband with APN Broadband (leave all other settings as default).
Broadband is the APN for the ipad.. i think if they are auditing that APN he would get flagged for sure as his device in the database should be an iphone.

So, would it be possible to add whatever APN is used for the original iPhone 3gs and (maybe) bypass their flag?
I'm using the Broadband APN with the SIM from my LTE hotspot and I've received no warnings from AT&T. Now, it is a business account so maybe I've got some leeway.
Your on the radar already to a degree so i cant say for sure but the wap.cingular apn would be the one you need... Just verify the settings below because i am going off my head....

So far, I guess I've been lucky. The most I've received is a warning that I'm in the top 5% of data users, and that I might be throttled. I have a little more than a week left in my billing period and I'm currently at just over 4gb of usage.
What pisses me off is i pay a couple hundred a month for 2 unlimited voice & data sims and 2 unlimited data sims.. you would think they would want the business. But they seem to be hell bent on the unlimited user witch hunt..

Looks like the APN is already set to wap.cingular (attached)
I wonder what made them flag me right away. Oh well...
It could be the UNLIMITED DATA plan... It would make sense they audit UNLIMITED DATA accounts to make sure you don't "change devices" so the minute the IMEI is changed its sends an alert and an SMS is dispatched to you.. i am just speculating.. i havent tried my UNLIMITED DATA sim in my 7.7 as i keep it in my Galaxy Nexus, but i'm going to try next week and see..
I've had my ATT SIM in my 7.7 several different times making calls, texts and using lots of data and haven't got the text/email yet...
is it an iPhone unlimited SIM?
can you post your APN settings?

Yeah that was going to be my next question too. If you were on just a smartphone unlimited plan, I suppose you should be ok. That's what I'm on and I haven't run into any issues (yet), apart from supposedly being throttled for being in the top 5%, but that's not the same I don't think.
P.S. I just called in to customer service, and apparently, based on my IMEI, they know that I'm using an "unlocked Samsung GT-P6800," but this has not affected my account in any way at this time. I am still on a smartphone unlimited plan, and thus far I haven't been throttled (yet).
Interesting...
Just spent an hour on the phone with AT&T until some manager put me on hold for more than half an hour (on purpose?) to check the price of the 3gb plan
For now I told them to keep me on the unlimited plan (will keep using the iPhone) until I decide what to do.
Since the 7.7 will only work on AT&T, I guess I don't have many options...
Not a big fan of AT&T at the moment...

If you're on Net10 with an AT&T sim card they say upfront that they throttle you at 1.5gb of data in any given month. I have yet to be throttled, but i'll probably hit 1.5gb this month with about a week left so we'll see what throttling is all about. Not sure if they just slow down the connection or completely cut it off, but I should know soon enough!
Be careful!

I hit some arbitrary limit before they had the 1.5gb cap. I was throttled and it stayed that way for months. I got jerked around by the phone support, email support and even their Facebook page staff for hours trying to get it lifted. It finally took a call to their "executive escalation" call center to resolve. I found that number on Howard Forums. The one that worked for me was 8008765753.

Usually extremely slow, ~4KB/s (kilobytes). Sometimes a little better, like ~10KB/s. Pretty useless.
Just posting some information in case it helps other people who might be searching like me...
The settings here from Net10 (scroll to "AT&T Network settings") result in no data:
http://www.net10wirelessphones.com/FAQ.html
The settings here from Net10 (click on "Phone Programming" and then "IF YOUR CARRIER IS AT&T") allow data, sms, and MMS:
http://net10sim.com/support.php
HOWEVER with these settings I still have intermittent data issues. For example:
Open Chrome, go to google.com = fast
Search for something = fast
Click the first result = hang, data connectivity lost (Chrome times out and says I am offline)
The settings here from xda behave the same as above:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=40188181&postcount=49
To be clear: sms, mms, and data "work" with the xda settings but I still have problems with data dropping. So I'm actually using the settings from "net10Sim.com" instead because they behave the same and require less editing.
I've put in a request with Net10 support to get real, valid, official APN settings but who knows if I'll really get anything.
Seeing the same thing on straight talk...
Now straight talk and net10 are sharing the tfdata APN settings... (Some straight people have been migrated to this tfdata, some are still on att.mvno)
Its really hit or miss... and seems to get better at night..
I can do a speed test and get 6 Mb down in Tulsa ok area, then not be able to load a web page.. I can tell when its acting up because the plus sign next to the H cycles.. On At&t and Net10 (At&t simm) for me that did not used to happened until just a week or so ago. Tmobile's + sign would cycle all the time. Now when I am having difficulty with a page loading I see it cycling.. When things are going "good" (fast page loads, consistent speedtest.net tests) + sign doesn't cycle at all.
Its frustrating to say the least..

http://net10sim.com/support.php

Has anyone else been seeing grey bars on the signal icon lately? My phone will shows H+ and full signal, but grey bars which means it's not connecting to google services. Have the apn settings changed recently?

I got this all the time, it means the phone can't connect to Google services... Usually also means internet is broken or to slow, when it happens to me nothing would load for several second. Switched to AT&T GoPhone and haven't had a single issue with that again.

It's only been the past month or so that it's been doing that, before that it was fine. I've seen on another thread that the apn settings have changed after the roll out of LTE or that I might need a new sim card possibly.

To be honest, mine started doing it in early August (although MMS has never worked) and I gave up after 4 hours on the phone with their tech support telling me it was an issue with my phone and not their problem. Switched to GoPhone and haven't had a single issue since.
Not sure if this is it either, but an AT&T wireless tech (I work in telecom, this is an actual tech that works on switches and tower sites), that the towers give priority to certain customers like AT&T post/pre paid accounts over MVNOs and if the equipment gets busy it will actually block "nonessential" services like data to lower grade APNs. He said they have seen traffic increases much more than expected from MVNOs in the last couple months... Take it for what's worth I guess.

Well finally got mms working for first time in 2 years. Downloaded a free app that gives you Correct apn settings. It tells you to create two separate apn's, one for mms and one for data. Worked great. It's called tweaker apn.

2 years?? Wow i wish i would have known. I could have helped you out. I figured this problem was already taken care of. Glad to know you got it working tho.
got the google edition in the mail today and set up the PTA apn to try to get LTE on it...
out of the box i got no data at all and the PTA apn doesnt work either.
im stuck usning the old cingular WAP for H+ on it ... called att AND google at the same time and ATT is sayng they cant guarantee i will get LTE since its not an ATT branded phone. Google is saying it should work and told ATT they are full of **** essentially..
any help?
Let's start with the stupid questions. After saving the pta apn did you click the green/blue bubble on the right of the apn

No. This should work out of the box. I was on the phone myself with AT&T and Google for two hours. It's a simple matter of AT&T changing the data plan to LTE, but they won't do it because they do not recognize the IMEI as an AT&T phone. No need to change APN settings. AT&T is basically screwing us. In the coming days I see a LOT of complaints coming. The customer service reps say there is nothing they can do, the network people say there's nothing they can do. Complete nonsense. Now, if you had an LTE data plan PRIOR to switching out phones you're probably going to be OK. It's those of us that were on 3G that will be screwed.
EDIT:
Well, after speaking with endless reps, I found one who was willing to actually do her job. She was sympathetic, did some research, and put in a phony IMEI number that allowed her to upgrade my plan from 3G to LTE. I guess the moral of the story is be persistent, hang up on the reps that say there's nothing they can do and keep trying till you find a rep willing to do their job properly.
By the way, I kept my unlimited status, no worries there.
FUNNY:
I had a call from a sales rep before the issue was fixed. Her solution was "why don't you return your phone, go to an AT&T store, and buy one of ours?"

which is what i was afraid of since i am on the grandfathered plan for 30 bucks unlimited ... no way in hell im going up to 40+ bucks for 2 GB of data.
and yes, i did choose the radio button for it.
they sent in some form to allow ATT to recognize my IMEI which might allow LTE to come in.. i asked about the plan and everything and no one said it wouldnt work... altho i had feared some people might have been told otherwise.

doing research actually, i did find that i even posted that question a few months back somewhere here on XDA...
would you need an upgraded plan to get LTE on ATT even if you have the grandfathered plan ?

You don't need the PTA APN anymore. Just one named phone.
Here's what I have that works perfectly on LTE:
Name: (whatever you want)
APN: phone
Proxy: not set
Port: not set
Username: not set
Password: not set
Server: not set
MMSC: http://mmsc.mobile.att.net
MMS proxy: proxy.mobile.att.net
MMS port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
Auth Type: not set
APN type: default,supl,mms,hipri
APN protocol: IPv4
APN roaming protocol: IPv4
Bearer: unspecified
MVNO type: none
This worked perfectly out of the box for me. I was reading somewhere that they don't really use the PTA APN anymore because that was when they were first turning on their LTE network and now this "phone" APN auto detects and works normally.

right, the issue is i didnt have an LTE phone prior. I had a 3g GS2 so my plan isnt configured to work on the LTE network.
for the Iphone they were honoring the old unlimited data plans for 30 dollar a month just changing the name of the plan to the new one (same price, still unlimited, upto 5GB before throttle)
someone just did this on the phone for me and i did get data using the phone APN now (no more using the old 3g only APN)
hopefully when i get out of the building i work in i can get some LTE reception and see if it worked.

If you haven't had an LTE phone prior, you probably don't have LTE data enabled through AT&T yet. What data plan are you on specifically? Does it say 4G for Smartphones or LTE for Smartphones? I'm thinking you're going to have to talk to AT&T and get them to switch your plan...

thats what they just did. they had the LTE plan unlimited for 30 a month they grant to grandfathered data plans when the iphone 5 came out
i am getting data on the PHONE apn now but still no LTE speeds...
i will call back later on in the day if i dont see LTE speeds coming in (speed test now only gave me 4 down)
they also apparantly sent in a form to get the IMEI covered by ATT which would guarantee they can provide :LTE speeds
went by att store and the guy there said it happens all the time with devices from south america (im in miami)
went to the back, grabbed an IMEI off a boxes device. applied that to my account... BAM ... LTE
I had the same problem with a rep telling me that the phone can't be found in their system. From the research I've done, it looks like you can give them any IMEI number off of a AT&T branded LTE phone and their system will switch your plan over.
Here's a good thread about it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2021401
