I guess i want to install Darky's v8.0 firmware i just need help getting started.
1.) Do i need to root first?
2.) ClockWorkMod Recovery what do i need to do to get it installed? Just put in on the SD card and go into recovery?
3.) What about SIM locks? The phone is locked to bell.
My phone has Froyo 2.2 JL2 from Bell Canada and in the recovery menu i see 3e which i know needs to be downgraded to 2e.
If someone can point me in the right direction that would be great. I read the tutorials in the samsung vibrant section but since that a different phone then i9000 i dont wanna take any chances.
No you do not need to root first.
Go into the I9000 Android section of the forum's and into the speed mod thread and flash hardcores kernel with Odin using his instructions. This will get you 2e recovery and clockworkmod the program used to install custom roms.
After that download Darkys rom onto your SD reboot your phone into cwm recovery its the default recovery with hardcores kernel and the choose update from SD and select darkys Rom and that's it wait for it to install.
I would provide links and such but I'm currently away from my PC.

can you pint me to the thread please
go here:
Flash a JPx rom using odin then flash this kernel:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108
It will give you 2e recovery
Then head over to Darky's thread and follow the instructions:

i was reading it all days yesterday both ways. But i can't find a JPx ROM that word work on my bell phone. Dose it matter that its locked? or do i just pick and flash?
You can flash with it locked, just means your phone is still locked after you flash.
If you flash the speedmod kernel, you get 2e (as mentioned earlier), and you also get an option on the recovery menu to root the phone. I suggest rooting, I think you need root to generate your unlock codes.
Download an app from the market called SGS Unlock... This will generate the unlock code for you.
Of course if you're using Bell, don't worry about unlocking. Locking to a carrier as far as i know, will not prevent you from flashing and using other carriers' roms. But then again, it's so darn easy to unlock, why wouldn't you anyways?
why not flash CF-Root v1.3? is it not the same thing and thats what it says to use in Dark'y thread.
So i guess find a JPx ROM use Odin and flash it and then flash the kernel either CF-Root v1.3 or speedmod and then flash Darky's ROM?
EDIT
I just installed the speedmod kernal, do i need to now install clockwork recovery? i think not coz its part of speedmod kernel?
i should really read Samdroid_G_S post
And in a couple of weeks when the internal SD is dead you can collect your $100 credit and get a new one!

hey! can u update how ur flash went I'm in the same situation here but can't donwload the kernel for now because too many people downloaded it today...
Btw once on this kernel can we flash any Rom or only 2.2 and higher, I read somewhere that JL2 was special has it can't be downgraded.....
thx
1 post!!!!
nah i been messing around with it all day finally had darky 8.1 installed to find it was broken. Just flash hardcore speedmod kernel and then flash darky 8.0 WIPE and then Darky NO WIPE.
Dont delete any cache or anything after you flash to 8.0. From 8.0 just update right away.

I flashed Darky's V7, V7.7 and V8 then went back to JL2 in between each without any problems. I try a lot of different ROMs and always end back at JL2.
Ian
load it up with Darky's v8.0...then flash just the JL2 modem using odin, then flash the speedmod kernel (12M now I believe) using odin or CWM.
Battery life is better than when on voodoo kernel and the JL2 modem makes GPS better (all this on bell's galaxy s of course).
i may go back to the JL2 Modem as well, just gonna test it for a few days. You should install 8.1 NO WIPE as well.
Do you just hit the PDA button in Odin and select modem.bin and then hit start?
Yes you put the jl2 modem file in pda and hit start

My wife has had it with her Vibrant running a 2.3.5 CM7 based ROM not having working GPS. I figured I would put her back to a stock but rooted ROM.
Is this possible? I have used ODIN before, so that is not an issue. I am having a hard time finding an original ROM to download.
What are my options?
Thanks in advance!!!

I was on Simply Honey and I ODIN back to stock (eclair).
I use the "GBBOOT-T959UVJFD.tar" (see link below, file is in 2nd post) and the 512 pit file. Make sure to check Re-Partition only, leave the other boxes UNCHECKED.

I followed s15274n guide, (link below) to root and install any rom. I used option B to root and update rom. I installed Trigger as I was on this prior to CM7 and found it to be the most stable.

So I cannot just download the stock ROM and ODIN back to it? Because of the GB bootloaders?

Use this method. It'll clean out any ghosts of old roms, and put you back on jk2 froyo with root and busybox. It should also put you back on froyo bootloader. I do this between every flash now.

Eugene's Froyo That Does Not Brick (FTDNB)
I have posted about it in several threads, including my own, so I figured I would finally put it in a central location. This is my FTDNB method for starting with a fresh, clean phone, without any ghosts of roms past popping up to cause you issues.
Download this first, and flash through Odin with your standard 512 pit file
http://eb-productions.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=samsungsgs&action=display&thread=8
Then when it reboots to the recovery screen, pull your battery, reinsert it and boot up to dl mode, and flash the following, with your same pit file, and selecting repartition in Odin this second flash only:
http://eb-productions.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=samsungsgs&action=display&thread=3
The first link there is Eugene's Froyo That Does Not Brick, but it doesnt work that well as a driver. As an eraser its great though! The second link is the Froyo JK2 leak, with fixed recovery and already rooted. If the first one didnt, the second flash will definitely put you back on Froyo bootloaders.
Thats my whole secret to keeping a clean phone and wiping out any ghosts. You can proceed from there in your desired direction (back to ZD or GZ preferrably) in a safe manner. Its always worked for me to clear up any oddness, and literally takes 15 minutes tops once you have the files downloaded.

I believe the latest official stock for Vibrant is 2.2 kb5. You can root using Z4root on your phone or Super One Click from your computer. Or you can use Rom Manager to put CWM on you're phone and flash the pre-rooted stock kb5 from the thread I posted above.

Hi I have an I9000 and I have upgraded the OS to 2.3.5 using the stock firmware from samfirmwares.com I think it is using Odin. The question I have and I have googled it and searched and read this and many other forums is can I root my I9000 without flashing CWM and a customer kernal?
On my 10.1 tab I just have a zip file I drop in root and reboot to the recovery menu and update it and it's done. I want the same for my I9000 (just for Titanium backup and SU) and I want to stay on the stock rom.
Thanks

It is not a single-click process but two.
First of all use CF(the least complicated kernel) that applies to JVS to obtain root(from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108 ) and then flash the stock kernel(from perkas stash-- http://perka.zapto.org ).The result would be your phone has root and only the stock kernel.
Best wishes.
Thanks thats what I wanted I'll do that then. Why do you flash twice though? why CF then perka?
Thanks for your help

Twice because----
1)the CF would root your phone
and since you don't want anything other than the native/original kernel,
2)flash the kernel as suggested.
You could as well not go for the second flash but simply remove the minor tweaks and reboot for them to be removed.
No big deal/difference really.
I am used to custom roms and android on many different devices. Have flashed many on SGS2 successfully, but am now facing issues with i9000!
(bell)
its Froyo
build number- FROYO-UGJL2
firmware version - 2.2
model number- gt-I9000M
I rooted with superoneclick, unlocked with GalaxyS_unlock
My goals: install CWM of course, and flash a custom rom (preferably a GB one)
I have no idea what to touch in this guide because my phone doesnt have any Jxx build numbers
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108
so then I looked at this guide-
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1379650
the "flashing jvp" rom link doesnt work so I cant follow that guide.
There are so many JVP and JVK etc etc I dont want to mess anything up
Since there is no UGL2 in the guides, should I update through samsung kies to their latest version and then re-root? Assuming the latest version through kies gives me a compatible build number
OR am I over thinking this, since I have successfully rooted, should I just download rom manager and install CWM from there?
And then go on to flash kg3 modem and install whichever rom I want?
Do I have to look for i9000m compatible roms?
--I just tried to use rom manager to get cwm, it said it worked fine but my recovery shows as 3e , not cwm
personally i would either upgrade using Kies or firmware from samfirmware to GB then root
Use Odin to flash JVT and take it from there.
After that you can flash the root kernel then flash whichever from you'd like.

Download the most recent JW5 firmware 2.3.6. Download the North American firmware UGKG3 2.3.3. Both these downloads need to be unzipped. Now in odin you will use the PDA file from JW5 and the modem and csc files from UGKG3. There are pit files included with the odin software download. Use the 512 pit file. Put your phone in download mode and flash it. Tell me when you done this and I'll how to root. It's very easy.

From this link. Download semaphore 2.7.4. tar. Place this file in pda and hit start. Takes about ten seconds and you're rooted.
To install a custom rom. Power down phone and use three button combo to access recovery and and install from sd. Choose zip. I recommend Dmore3.3 made for jw5. After you install a rom I recommend re flashing your kg3 modem and csc again in odin. Only those two nothing in pda. Enjoy

The person above you told me to flash JVT
Also it doesnt matter if I flash things that are not for i9000M? JW5 doesnt look like its for i9000m.
I should not use all the files from KG3? Whats the benefit from using the modem files from jw5 as opposed to kg3?
Thanks!
Bud your phone is essentially a I9000, I live in Canada, Victoria to be exact and my phone used to say I9000m on it, now it doesn't because I run jw5 as my pda. Anything made for I9000 will run on your phone. Just run kg3 as your modem and csc. The guy telling you to run jvt... I don't know why, it's an old, buggy rom. JW5 is the most recent and most likely the last update for the I9000. PDA is just the part of your phone that basically makes the phone do the cool stuff it does. Modem is the part that decides whether or not you will have good coverage. That's why you use kg3, because that is the bell Canada modem. It will be fine. Note the first link I gave you, notice how the title says both I9000 and I9000m that's because they are the same phone. Your phone is only an m because you are running the stock bell firmware. You can flash kg3 for the whole thing if you want pda included... But they are no good root kernels for it and I don't believe there are any custom roms for it. But it's better than what you have now.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda premium
Did all of that, but no matter what I flash as the pda, the phone will not boot.
If I flash the kg3 as pda, the phone will boot.
I found a pre-rooted kd3 on xda and flashed that as modem and even that will not boot.
after flashing kg3 to get it to boot, i tried flashing semaphore and I get stuck in a bootloop so I had to flash kg3 again
If there are instructions on how to do this please post a link or maybe someone can help? Thank you.

The safest way to get away from ICS is:
Use PC Odin or Heimdall to flash a safe Gingerbread kernel with working CWM (NOT a full firmware package, and DO NOT mess with repartitioning), such as a Gingerbread CF-Root release. From there you can wipe and then flash whatever you want.
To be clear - JUST flash a safe kernel and then wipe/flash using that - don't flash anything else in PC Odin. If the full firmware package you flash has bootloaders it could hose you.

I've flashed the Abyss kernel as stated and now I have a problem, it stays at the loading screen, excellent instructions guys!
Flash any stock GB ROM via PC ODIN. Do not tick repartition.
Try flashing a single file ROM, not 3 files ROM.
In case if fails, then try flashing a stock 3 files ROM (PDA, MODEM & CSC) alongwith .PIT file and re-partition checked.

Simple, Downgrade to a older GB using PC odinthe rom must be one of the 'root able' roms found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997
Then once you have downgraded use this method to gain root and cwm http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360 (scroll to the bottom of the op)
Thanks man, But on another thread (CleaNote ROM) it says this:
Flash STOCK ICS with PC odin
boot the rom
reboot to dowload mode
flash CF kernel
reboot rom
copy CleaNote ROM zip to phone
reboot to CWM
install zip

If you are looking to flash a rom that has step by step instructions on how to install it then follow those, as some roms require different instructions.
But if you want to gain root and CWM and are not sure on what rom you want first what I have said is the easiest way to go
Well that was just what i read on one of the posts, In the OP it just says flash from CWM, Providing you have a safe kernel and root.
My current ROM is LC1 which is one of the unrootable ROMs, and my DLoad for ICS is almost complete !
I think i will just flash ICS then a safe kernel, Then the CleaNote ROM. Im just so scared about the brickbug lol. I will wipe before i update, As GB is safe right ?

ICS flashed fine
Got root and CWM, Just installed Abyss kernel. Now doing a nandroid, Then Im gonna flash CleaNote,
Will avoid the wipe option even tho it says its safe in this kernel, Just not ready to take the risk yet.
Thanks for the advice, Been debating whether to take the plunge all day.
EDIT: spoke to soon, Now Im stuck on Splash screen, Dunno why, The nandroid was successful, But i cannot boot back into recovery now.
Looks like I'll have to flash the ICS again.
Abyss kernel is for gb not for ics. When cleanote said a safe kernel it is speedmod k3-3 or franco r3,r4,r5& r6. They use abyss kernel in wiping data in ics recovery just to be safe and the right step are 1. Flash the abyss kernel 4.2( after that do not wipe or flash your custom rom yet, very important to remember it will superbreak your phone), 2. Go to advanced and find reboot to recovery and click it and do the wiping their, its safe 3. and then you can flash the custom rom. In the case of cleanote theirs no need use abyss if you already flash speedmod or franco kernel in your ics before flashing the cleanote rom because cleanote 1.02 will automatically wipe your data.
Thanks man !! I'll get the hang of this one day
Im on rooted stock ICS now, With CF Kernel, So I just need to flash speedmod kernel( I loved their kernels & ROMs on the SGS1) reboot recovery, Then install CleaNote ?
I almost got it right lol
After flashing speedmod k3-3 click REBOOT SYSTEM NOW(get out of the recovery first) then check in the setting if you really have the speedmod kernel in your system running to be sure and enter recovery again and flash the cleanote rom, thats it.
