Best dj05 kernel for popping audio - Fascinate General

My number one audio usage is listening to podcasts with Google Listen. Unfortunately, I keep getting audio popping whenever I am doing something else while listening to a podcast. The popping seems to lessen considerably when I turn the screen off.
I'm currently using Adrenalyne's 12/30 kernel. I believe that Stupidfast test kernels fixed the problem but they messed up my phone in other ways... low battery, lockups, pauses, etc.
So what's the best kernel for this issue?

I have found that turning the screen off helps too, I haven't found a kernel that works for me.

Use SetCPU and change the min clock speed from 100mhz to 200mhz. Everyone that I've seen that has the audio issue has had it stop when changing the min clock speed.

When you're having audio issues, are your softkey backlights on at the bottom? If so, that's a known hardware issue - if you're using backlight notifications, need to clear the notification, or, if you're on a newer update that leaves the backlight on while the screen is on, you'll need to turn off the screen. The key backlights generate a signifigant amount of electrical noise that is picked in the audio.

Actually the problem lies on how much stuff you have going on in the background. If you have many widgets, LWP, apps, etc your cpu will stutter with 100mhz. You should raise it to 200mhz and the problem will be gone. You won't feel the battery consumption difference by doing this, so try it.

I find that I have to raise it to 400-800 minimum at times.

I can confirm that changing the minimum clock speed to 200mhz works. I've been doing that for a number of weeks now and it's never failed to work.

I had the popping too. The screen off helped but I couldn't take it. Jumped on the voodoo Train and haven't looked back. No pops plus its so smooth and fast I can't believe I ever went without it.

Thanks all, I'm going to try raising the min cpu and see if that helps.
I'm interested in voodoo sound and what that has to offer. Does anyone know if that is being porter to the Fascinate?

SetCPU configuration

Hello,
I just installed SetCPU and configured some profiles. I'd like to hear comments about them:
Screen Off 83/83
Charging 667/83
Battery < 15% 83/83
Battery < 30% 222/83
What do you think of setting 83/83? Too low?
How can I overclock?
I'd like to set a profile for temperature controlling, what is considered a high temp?
Thanks!
I would like to know about this as well. How has those settings worked out for you so far?
Using 83/83 was way too slow. When I had screen off and wanted to turn it back on, it would take too long.
I'm currently using these profiles (in order off priority):
Charging 667/83 (ondemand)
Screen off 222/83 (conservative)
Battery <30% 222/83 (conservative)
I haven't figured out how to overclock yet.

For overclocking we would nees a custom kernel that supports overclocking.

Nope... I refer to the real custom roms. Aosp, jpb light, jpa hybrid... And currently there seems to be an eclair rom with ext4 fs is in work... Have Look in the development section.

Thanks for the info. I'll give this a try.
Charging 667/667 (performance)
Screen off 166/83 (performance)
Temp >37C 166/83 (conservative)
rest of the time i have under-clocked it to 333/166 (conservative)
ondemand scaling is a bit laggy when switch speeds...
current setup gives me bout 45-52 hours of usage time.
this includes around 200 msgs a day(outgoing), a total of about 1 hour wifi on time...and around 30 mins bluetooth on.plus an "always screen on " option while texting...
apps/widgets running
$brightness is minimum....always.can increase using widgets when u wanna read or check sumthin out, then revert back to min.

Yeah, but we need someone who's crazy enough to try to overclock his i5800 without any information on the CPU X)
SetCPU lagged my phone like crazy all the time it was on.
Launcher pro+SetCPU was a damn nightmare, apps took close to 9 secs to load.

Do you get lag after turning the screen on?
I used to have anipet Aquarium Live Wallpaper + ADW Launcher EX, and had huge lag when turning the screen on - with 222/83. I stopped using the Live Wallpaper, and it got better, but there's still lag sometimes. I don't know how heavy ADW Launcher EX is, if it is it's fault or not.
Using performance scaling, if I'm not mistaken (the documentation page of setcpu is down) forces the cpu to always run at the max frequency, so it'd be the same as setting the max and min frequency as the same value, right?
I'll give a try at using conservative instead of ondemand and see if I get less lag, though I'd expect exactly the opposite!
What's the point on downclocking the CPU while using the phone ? I mean, 333mhz makes me think i bought a chinese phone (And not a cool one like the ZTE Blade).

i totally agree, i would love to able to overclock it, not underclock it
i have undeclocked it coz i want a longer "ON" time...i am texting and callin ppl most of the time so battery lasts jus for a day.i don't wanna charge it everyday.plus using at 333 isnt so bad..i don't play games(much)...and even when i do(angry birds, paper toss) it works fine...u will get used to it....and whats the point in overclocking this phone? with a crappy resolution no HD game will run on it.
the only thing that sucks at low speeds is the gallery.however this can be "solved" by using the Quickpic app.it's better organized and hella fast.but it lacks the fancy looks...
@iomartin..there is no delay or lag and i have disabled the lock screen also.i use go launcher btw.

A bit useless.. But there is a way to clock it at 523mhz if we read the CPU's specifications... That could be cool..

Wow thanks for this. I used these settings except for the last one (underclocking when the cellphone is being used)
Last time I recharged was 63 hours ago, and battery indicator still shows 50% left! I have:
- Watched an episode of Kenny vs Spenny (640x480)
- Played ~1h of games
- Surfing + downloading ~30min on Wi-Fi
- Installed ~ 10 apps
- Texted about 50 messages
- Made about a total of 10 minutes of calls
- Sent songs through bluetooth for.. ~10 minutes
- Listened to music for about ~30 mins
Still 50% left? Amazing. Of course this can (or is) a problem with the crappy indicator and it can quickly decrease to ~15 in a heartbeat, but it still is pretty amazing.
Phone says it has been on for 73 hours, I wonder if that's the actual time I recharged it for the last time, or if It's the last time it was charged?
Once again thanks for those profiles. First time I used the app I reckon setting the same but I used OnDemand scaling (What's the difference between these btw?) and It lagged like hell when I turned the screen on again. None of that happens now, the phone works the same way as if it had normal clock speeds.
Oh and I don't use 3G and I've got APNDroid blocking all internet connections. I wonder if that does anything to the battery life?
EDIT: Now I used some bluetooth for 15 mins and made few calls and it got bumped down to 15% and told me to recharge. Guess It'd still work for about 6 hours on stand-by but still the battery life for me was ~67hrs, whilst being ~48 before.

Phone crackles when playing audio

Hey guys,
Just recently updated to DLo0 Superclean and ever since my audio is a little crackly when playing either native music or pandora. Obviously the rom is suspect, but I am confused why it would matter as the kernel is the same as stock, and it shouldn't be affecting processing. Anyone have experience with this?
Use the search button. download Setcpu and set min to 200. You're welcome.
I had audio popping on DJ05 and DL09 but using set CPU and setting min to 200mhz fixed it.

I see. Thank you, and my apologies
Out of curiosity why does this present only with the superclean ROM? This seems like strictly a kernel issue, something that wasnt modified.
for anyone who needs it: SetCPU
Out of curiosity, does anybody know WHY changing the min CPU speed to 200 helps? Is it because the default min CPU is 100Mhz, and isn't fast enough to keep up with audio processing?

Almost def, thats why im wondering if the new kernel is more aggressive in its clock settings.
I would say that it's due to 100mhz being to low and the scaling being setup so that it doesn't cross the threshold to be bumped up to 200mhz. That, or it's going just up to the threshold, then lowering some, and constantly going back and forth between 100/200mhz.
Yay my first post. Anyways, were you using the Adrynalyn kernel? I'm new to all this rooting and stuff since last night. I tried the Adrynalyn + superclean dl09 and I got some crackling and popping.
I was a bit stumped but I tried a different kernel and the popping is gone. Right now i'm using Stupidfast. so far so good
Thanks for the explanation w/o extra sarcasm. Much appreciated!!
Good info. Having the same problem here

How to get kernels set up perfect for your phone

This is a guide I have typed up on how to get the best display , sound, and battery out of your phone...
First you need to set up voodoo color with the voodoo control application on the market.
The way I did this was turn each setting all the way up and turned down gradually until the color went away. Now my display has never looked better.
Voodoo color settings differ from phone to phone due to screen use and the fact that different colors are different on certain phones. My phone is less blue than others, so I recommend that you follow that technique and do it yourself.
Voodoo profile v1
225
254
365
-15
-18
-11
My next thing I am going to talk about is sound.
In some kernels the drivers for voodoo are currently built into the kernel but not accessible via the UI.In cm7, voodoo sound doesn't exist at all. I purchased the payed version of voodoo control and the loading of the driver via that works without squealing. If you need voodoo sound, buy it. To get optimal sound, you need to tweak according to headphones. Plug in your headphones and play a song that you like with good quality audio. Now tweak the bass boost and equalizer (if your media player has one). Left side is bass(background stuff and shake), right is treble (clear voice). I usually keep the middle low and sides high.
If you have a phone that can go to 1.5ghz with ease, these are the settings I recommend.
Min: 100
Max: 1000
100 -150
200 -125
400-800 -75
Remove 900
1000 -100
Next, speed and battery. Get the voltage control app for this. Use ondemand for voltage testing it gets a wide range of frequencies. At the lower frequencies, undervolt starting at -150. Lock the phone, let it sit for a minute, if it froze, bump the voltage up to, -125. After the lowest step is set up good, change the other steps starting at the last voltage slide around the voltage control application and then idle a bit, if it freezes, move the voltage up... do the same for the next steps, starting with the voltage of the last.
Now you can test speed with governor and schedulers. I use ondemand and sio but most like lagfree and vr.
Overclocking is an option for speed but I advise against it due to.horrible, the risk of data corruption, and the decreased ability and life of your phone.

Governers tell the processor when to go to certain speeds. Comservitive keeps it lazy and not moving around much. Lagfree keeps it high when the screen is on. Performance keeps it always at the highest. Ondemand keeps it at a mix of speed and performance. Smartass and savagedzen make it low when the screen is off and scales according to demand.

Marcusant, I've been thinking about this a bunch lately. When people use profiles in something like SetCPU aren't they setting up redundant commands? In theory a well programmed governor would notice the state the phone was in and adjust according to the governor's master settings. By setting a profile would it be like having a governor running within other governors?
Profiles really **** **** up... the processor will go wherever it needs to go.

Indeed, Marcusant, this was really helpful.
seems like you were right about the overclocking, tried these settings, plus 1200 mhz, and it was stable for a while, then the phone started rebooting on me. maybe i just need to keep messing with the voltage. anyway, what are the differences in schedulers?

Annoying issue with core scaling...

I know many will probably just ignore this bug, but I can't because just knowing it's there is pestering. Anyway the GPU is not functioning properly ever since 4.2.2 . Its frequency isn't dynamic.
I would like if some volunteers with faux clock or another GPU reading app could confirm if they have the same issue on 4.2.2 .

On demand doesn't entail a static frequency. Previously it would drop to 128 or 200 but now it sticks to 400... That is definitely not normal behavior for this governor. I only had faux clock open and I doubt that app would be GPU intensive.
And this is a problem for me because the the back is noticeably warmer than before despite me having a max of 1ghz and eco mode.

Ah ok sorry, thought you meant it wasn't scaling through the frequencies on light loads.
Dunno may be it's using some kind of low power state instead, I'm using faux stock enhanced kernel and mine is cool at the back with just normal use, also getting great battery life.
Mine only gets hot with heavy gaming or by just browsing with 3g on.

My issue is that it sticks to 400 which is high state. The only time it changes is when I set it to 487, it'll switch between 487-->400 constantly. Something is triggering a load but these tests are on fresh installs. It's generating heat which isn't good for batteries, especially non removable.
All these issues with my nexus are seriously making me reconsider my purchase -_-

[Q] Sprint galaxy s4: overheating with no over clock

I just can't seem to keep the temperatures below 41-45° while using the device. While I'm not using the phone the temps stay pretty low, roughly between 37 - 39°. The reason I'm posting this question is because the phone gets noticeably hot to the touch and I didn't want to be creating worse problems down the road due to persistent overheating. Is there something I should do to protect from overheating?
Currently I'm running triforce 3.1 rom with comadose package, hot spot mod, speed tweaks and a few altered build. props. Also running the KT kernel with no over clock just the stock kernel MHZ'S. My speeds are really good I get 45mbps download and 15mbps upload just wanna make sure the heating issue isn't bad.
Thanks in advance for the help.

The thing is im not even overclocking my phone yet out of fear for it getting worse. The issue began when I installed KT's kernel. So I uninstalled it and reinstalled the stock mf9 kernel. I then found the triforce rom with KT's kernel and decided to give it another shot. Right now I'm running my CPU at 1890/380 mhz. So lowering the voltages should help the heat issue even though I'm not overclocking yet? Thanks for the quick response bro.
Could be a bad battery, take it to Sprint and see if they will exchange one for you.
I've noticed on the phone that if you use it heavily, then it tends to heat like crazy. Or if you're doing something on there that is using a lot of RAM or juice from the device.
You can try and remove some tweaks, that might be an issue. And check to see which part of th system is using the most battery on your phone.

Thanks for the reply, I have noticed that when I use antutu benchmark or on it a while is when it overheats the most, just wanted to make sure it wasn't a big big deal. I did just remove the tweaks I had set with Android tweaker pro mabye that'll help a bit. The comadose package I just flashed gave my phone a huge boost of speed so I feel like I don't need all those tweaks. Does anyone know if Android tweaker is a good tweaker app or is is there a better one? Thanks again for all the help everyone.
